From the sounds of girlish giggles into the wee hours of the morning or the antics of a groups of boys running wild in the backyard, who doesn’t love a good slumber party? While tons of fun for the kids, slumber parties can be challenging for the adult hosting if you don’t prepare adequately for it. Be sure to plan enough activities to last you through the evening and the next morning. Don’t fret if your plans don’t go as planned—just have a general concept of the different activities the kids will be doing throughout the party. Take a look at these suggestions:

When it gets late at night and everyone needs to start to quiet down but not ready for sleep, start a movie for them to watch. Give them lots of popcorn to snack on.

Popcorn, candy galore, pretzels, chips, dip and more! These are a few sleepover snacks that will keep the kids happy. No slumber party is complete without a sundae bar (ice cream, syrup toppings, whipped cream, candy toppings, etc.). For breakfast, create a cereal bar in your kitchen. Have a few cereals for everyone to choose from and don’t forget the milk. This is an easy way to satisfy everyone’s taste buds.

Start the night out with decorating pillowcases. All that is required for this craft is paint and a plain pillowcase. You can’t go wrong with getting stamps or stencils to make decorating easy! Let the kids write their names on each other’s—these can be taken home as party favors! Set up a station that will be used for makeovers. Provide the necessities or have each guest bring them for the makeover. Include supplies for hair styling, makeup and nails. After the group is all made over provide a box of items collected from your closet for a fashion show! Create awards to pass out for Best Model Walk, Most Creative, and etc. Don’t forget to take tons of photos!

Create a flashlight treasure hunt. Hide glow in the dark stars and insects around your backyard. Provide each boy with a flashlight and a paper bag. Send them on their way to find the hidden treasures and let them keep whatever they find in their provided bags. Launch a silly string war by dividing the boys into two teams. Allow them 30 minutes to build their fort out of provided materials such as cardboard boxes, old blankets and duct tape. Once their forts are created, arm them with their cans of silly string and let the battle begin. The team least covered in silly string at the end wins. 1427 W. P rien Lake

Summer Sun Safety Tips

by Lauren Tarasiewicz

Living in Southwest Louisiana the summer sun can mean many exciting, outdoor adventures. Before heading outside to soak up the sun though, parents need to take some precautions to protect their children from the sun.

According to American Cancer Society it is vital to protect skin from the sun’s damaging rays for a number of health reasons. Some steps that can be taken to protect health are: • Avoid outdoor activities between the hours of 10am and 4pm. This is when the sun’s rays are strongest. • Always wear sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. • Be sure to reapply sunscreen frequently, especially after heavy perspiring or swimming. • Wear dark colors. Darker colors provide more protection by preventing more UV rays from reaching your skin. Children need extra protection from the sun. Blistering sunburns before age 18 increases the risk of skin cancer. Encourage children to play in the shade, wear their protective clothing and regularly apply sunscreen.

HOME E ALONE

ntrusting your child to stay home alone during their summer vacation is challenging and not an easy decision for any parent to make. Before deciding this is the best thing for your family, be sure to take into consideration your child’s mental, physical and emotional state; whether or not your child is willing to stay at home and laws in your state on the issue.

by Lauren Tarasiewicz

According to Child Welfare Information Gateway, there is no specific age that has been agreed on for children to stay home alone. Parents tend to know their children best so it should not necessarily be based solely on age whether or not they can stay on their own. Ask yourself these questions to help decide: • Is your child able to care for him/ herself- mentally and physically? • Does your child follow rules? • How does your child respond to emergency situations? • What are your child’s feelings or concerns about staying home alone?

Before the decision is made to leave your child at home there are safety rules that should be gone over with them. • Have a safety plan for emergencies and be sure to go over it with them. • Make sure your child knows their full name, address and phone number. • Be available for your child to contact you at all times and make sure they know how to do so. • Have a list of trusted adults that your child can contact in case of an emergency. It is wise to have all of this information written out in folder or binder to make it easily accessible just in case your child needs it.

Once it is determined that your child can stay home alone there are steps that can be taken to prepare not only your child, but you, to feel more comfortable. • Have a trial period. • Act out situations that could occur and how they should handle them. • Establish the rules of the home. • Check in with them or have another trusted adult check in with them. • Don’t overdo it. There are many programs that your child can partake in at churches, schools or community centers that will keep your child connected.

Are We There, yet?

by Lauren Tarasiewicz

Long trips with children can seem much longer when there is someone constantly asking, “Are we there yet?” Getting to and from your summer vacation destination doesn’t have to be a test of your patience though. There are a number of fun activities that can engage families on trips.

• Road trip bingo. Many websites have print-ready bingo game cards or you can make your own at home. Rather than using numbers, you look out of the window to fill your game card by spotting and marking off traffic signs, car brands and more. • ABC Game. This game involves street signs and is great for interstate trips. Go through the alphabet finding words that begin with each letter. You are not allowed to move on to the next letter until you find the one that you are on. This can be tricky, but so much fun. • License plate game. Prepare a list containing the names of all 50 states before your trip. This will make it easy for children to keep better track of what they have seen. Pay attention to the license plates of the surrounding vehicles on the road, making checks or tallies next to each license plate seen that do not belong to the current state you are in. See who can find the most out-of-state license plates and reward the winner with a small prize like a coloring book and crayons.

summertime Bucket List by Lauren Tarasiewicz

Children’s activities are plentiful in the summer! There is no need for a routine with all of the options available. Make a checklist of things and set a goal to accomplish the majority of them by the end of the summer. • Explore a local park • Check out the Children’s Museum • Dig your toes into sand at the beach • Take cookies to your local fire department

• Have a pajama & movie day (great rainy day activity) • Go on a nature walk • Stage a water balloon fight • Grow flowers from seeds • Have a talent show • Draw with chalk outside

These are just a few activities that can be fun for summertime. It is always a good idea to look into what is playing at your local movie theater or what new exhibits are going to be at the museums in your area. Check out www.visitlakecharles.org for a list of area events and happenings.
