Summer Getaways a Drive Away
by Allie Mariano
There is nothing like packing up the car, filling up the tank, and driving off to a fun location. This summer, if a big trip is not in the cards, or if you’re just looking for a weekend away, consider a short road trip. All of these trips are around three hours or less, and each location is just full of fun things to do in a weekend visit. Even better, many of these suggestions are free or very low cost. • New Orleans is an easy choice. Check out the street performers in Jackson Square and visit the French Market, where local artisans set up shop. Pass by the open air gazebo near the French Market for live jazz music, during nice weather. Hop on the streetcar for a low-priced tour of historic streets and beautiful homes. Of course, the Audubon Zoo pleases young and old alike. Every Wednesday in May, there is also free music in Lafayette Square.
• C heck out Hodges Gardens State Park. Called the “Garden in the Forest,” the park features beautiful botanical gardens with a walking path and small stream. The park also has fully furnished cabins, as well as tent camping sites. All of this is beside a huge lake where boat and canoe renting are available. There are also two short walking trails, the 5-mile Wild Azalea hiking trail, and two equestrian walking trails.
• Houston is full of restaurants. They have every option you could imagine, from high quality sushi to excellent fried chicken food trucks. Nothing says summer like a baseball game, and the Houston Astros have a great stadium and tickets start as low as $12. Looking for something unusual? Reserve your spot at James Turrell’s “Twilight Epiphany” Skyspace.
• Avery Island might seem like a simple tourist destination. The home of Tabasco hot sauce is built on island of salt. Visitors can check out the factory and see how the famous hot sauce is made. Then, the adventurous can venture into the Jungle Gardens. With a five-mile drive-through, multiple walking paths, and an area for bird observation, the Jungle Gardens offer a unique experience in Louisiana.
• Lafayette is a great option for a weekend trip. You’ll save on gas by only driving an hour, and the attractions like Acadian Villiage and Vermilionville allow families to step back in time to 19th century life in Southwest Louisiana.

Dangers of Sunburn by Allie Mariano
Fashion and style magazines might sing the praises of a summer glow, but too much sun has very real risks. While it might be easy to dismiss a burn as normal part of summer time, it’s important to know the dangers that can accompany it. While the initial burn and its effect will go away in a few days, other effects are long-lasting. By far, the scariest outcome of sunburn is skin cancer. Over 5 million Americans are treated for skin cancer every year, and more new cases are diagnosed than breast, lung, prostate, and colon cancer combined. Having five bad sunburns over the course of one’s life nearly doubles a person’s chance of getting melanoma. Melanoma makes up the smallest percent of skin cancer cases; however, it is the most deadly. Other forms of skin cancer can also result from sunburn, and while these cases are less likely to result in death, the treatment can be disfiguring if not dealt with quickly. In addition to causing cancer, sunburn can have other long-term effects. Too much exposure to the sun can result in premature aging. Your skin is made up of collagen and elastin proteins, which help your skin heal and stay firm. The UV rays break down these proteins, causing them to weaken. This makes the skin weaker and less elastic. Among the effects are deeper wrinkles, rougher skin, visible fine veins, and sunspots, also called solar lentigines. While none of these effects are harmful, they do cause someone to look older than they are. While very fair-skinned people are more susceptible to sunburn and are the majority of those affected by it, all skin shades can be harmed by too much sun. In order to stay healthy and young looking, always wear sunscreen that is SPF 30 or higher when you will be outside, and reapply every two hours. In general, stay out of direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The sunlight is more direct and more harmful at these times. Protect your body from the sun to keep it healthy.

Swimming Safety Tips by Allie Mariano
Nothing says summer like long hours in the pool or natural water. Unfortunately, without the proper precautions, swimming can be dangerous. Every year, 3500 people die as a result of accidental drowning, and the majority of those who die are children 14 and under. Many more people are injured every year simply because they weren’t following simple safety guidelines. The best way to prevent injury or worse is learning strong swimming skills. Both the CDC and the American Red Cross recommend a few of the following precautions and suggestions for staying safe in the water. • Make sure everyone in your family knows how to swim. Enroll your kids in a swimming class, and take an adult class if you are not totally confident in the water. The American Association of Pediatrics gives the go-ahead on swimming lessons for children as young as one. • Closely supervise children in the pool area. Children should learn at a young age that they must ask permission before getting in the pool, and that they should never be in the pool area without an adult supervising them. • Minimize distractions. An accident can occur in minutes, and as the CDC says, “seconds count.” • I f you have a pool, make sure there are appropriate barriers around it. The gates should self-close and self-latch, and children should not be able to enter on their own.
• Keep horseplay to a minimum. Dunking or just hanging on to other swimmers can quickly result in injury. Don’t forget: drinking or other forms of impairment are equally dangerous. • Stay out of the water in inclement weather, especially if there is potential lightning. Swimmers should get out of the pool at the first clap of thunder. • Make sure the proper flotation equipment is close by. Rafts and noodles cannot be used as life-saving devices. Life jackets are the safest option, and they should always, always be work on a boat. • Learn CPR. Hopefully you will never have to use it, but CPR works. It is the quickest way to save a life.
