Eating after age 50 Support your body with the right fuel
From Metro Creative
A
s people age, their dietary needs begin to change. Foods that were once staples of your diet as a youth may be restricted once you hit a certain age, while other foods you may have always avoided may now be necessary to fuel and support a healthy body. Eating healthy foods and exercising may not be enough to sustain health, as hormonal changes and other health effects as a person reaches age 50 can have a profound impact on his or her nutritional requirements. These are a few things those older than 50 may want to consider as they look to eat a healthy diet for years to come. 4

things to consider
VITAMIN D Both men and women age 50 and older have a reduced ability to produce vitamin D through exposure to the sun. Extra vitamin D will be needed from foods and supplements. Everyone older than age 50 should take a daily vitamin D supplement of 400 IU, according to Canada’s Food Guide. Without adequate vitamin D, bone strength and health can deteriorate because Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption. Vitamin D also has other roles, including
helping neuromuscular and immune function and reducing inflammation. FRIENDLY FATS People older than 50 should increase their intake of unsaturated fats and reduce consumption of saturated fats. Nutrient-rich unsaturated fats can guard against heart conditions, protect against stroke, keep skin supple and even help men and women maintain good neurological health. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in nuts, olives, seeds and fatty fishes. INCREASE PROTEIN According to Christine Gerbstadt, MD, RD, a spokesperson for the
Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, as they age, men and women need more protein in their diets to maintain their muscle mass. The amount of protein needed at a younger age no longer may be adequate. Look for lean sources of protein from fish and poultry. Beans are also a low-fat source of protein that can help fulfill daily protein requirements. MORE FIBER Eating more fiber can help with digestive and intestinal problems, such as constipation. Constipation can occur when fiber intake is not enough, coupled with — Continues on page 6 —

a more sedentary lifestyle. The best way to get fiber is through foods. Leave the skins on fruit and vegetables and choose whole fruits over juices. Wholegrain breads and cereals also are good sources of fiber. Dry beans and lentils can add a fiber boost. Always increase fiber slowly to determine your tolerance. FEWER CALORIES The National Institute on Aging says women older than age 50 need between 1,600 and 2,000 calories, depending on how physically active they are. Men need between 2,000 and 2,400 calories

per day. With each passing year there is a decrease in the energy required to maintain body weight, so caloric intake should be adjusted accordingly. MORE WATER As a person ages, his or her body may not signal it is thirsty as well as it once did, so it’s possible you may not recognize when you are thirsty or dehydrated. The Mayo Clinic recommends about nine to 10 cups of beverages per day to remain hydrated. Eating healthy and changing one’s diet is important as a person ages, as dietary needs at age 50 may be quite different from what they were at age 30.

foods for the over 50 crowd
Apples A superfood that helps to reduce cholesterol by preventing plaque buildup in the blood vessels and, as a result, cutting an individual’s risk of diabetes considerably. Apples also make for a great source of fiber, potassium and vitamin C. Blueberries Blueberries help maintain healthy blood sugar levels because they are high in soluble fiber, which lowers cholesterol while slowing the body’s uptake of glucose. And despite their relatively small size,
blueberries contain more fiber, vitamins and minerals per ounce than any other fruit. Broccoli Broccoli is loaded with vitamin C. A single 3.5 ounce serving of broccoli contains more than 150 percent of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C, which can shorten the duration of the common cold. In addition, a 2013 British study published in Medical News Today found that broccoli may help prevent osteoarthritis, a degeneration of joint cartilage and the underlying bone that is
most common from middle age onward. Fava beans Fava beans are cholesterol-free and low in fat. Fava beans also may provide cardiovascular benefits and help men and women maintain healthy weights. Fava beans are considered “nutrient-dense,” a term used to describe lowcalorie foods that boast lots of nutrients, and are an excellent source of vitamin B1, which is important for nervous system function and energy metabolism. Oatmeal Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which can reduce cholesterol levels and subsequently reduce a person’s risk of heart disease. Also low in calories, oatmeal can help maintain a healthy weight. — Metro Creative

exercise and fitness
Exercise
and aging
Addressing common concerns Exercise is an essential element of a healthy lifestyle. Including exercise in your daily routine can lower your risk for diabetes, heart disease and stroke, and exercise can even sharpen mental acuity, reduce anxiety and improve mood. According to the National Institute on Aging, the following are a few points men and women should know as they attempt to improve their physical fitness with a more active lifestyle. • Exercise can make existing medical conditions more manageable. Men and women over the age of 50 who have preexisting medical conditions are likely to find that exercise alleviates rather than exacerbates their physical problems. The NIA notes that studies have shown that regular exercise and physical activity can benefit people with arthritis, high blood pressure and heart disease. But it’s still recommended that men and women with preexisting medical conditions consult with 8
thrive | spring/summer 2016
their physicians before making any lifestyle changes. Some conditions may affect a person’s ability to be active, and it’s best to get the go-ahead from a physician before beginning an exercise regimen. Doctors may even suggest certain activities that have been known to alleviate particular conditions. • Exercise reduces fatigue, so sitting around to preserve strength is not effective. Exercise improves strength and energy levels, so sitting on the sideline to preserve your strength is counterproductive and could lead to serious medical problems. The “Report on Physical Activity and Health” from the U.S. Surgeon General’s office noted that men and women who are inactive are almost twice as likely to develop heart disease as those who are more active. While getting adequate rest and giving your body ample time recover from physical activity is essential, your body won’t benefit by avoiding exercise to preserve your strength.
However, even moderate physical activity performed on a regular basis can reduce fatigue. • No one is too old to exercise. It’s not uncommon for men and women in their golden years to think they are too old to exercise. Some may feel that their toned down workouts cannot possibly be making much of an impact thanks to the physical limitations old age has put on their bodies, while others may think it’s unwise for someone in their 70s or 80s to be physically active. But no one is too old to exercise, as exercise helps the body stay strong and fit even when you can no longer max out on the bench press or squat hundreds of pounds. Scaling back your exercise routine will be necessary as you get older, but that does not mean you cannot still enjoy and benefit from physical activity. Continuing to exercise as you age is a great way to improve your quality of life and stay as active as possible well into your golden years.
Did you know? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, research has shown that strengthening exercises are safe and effective for all ages, including seniors. The CDC also notes that those with heart disease or arthritis may benefit the most from regimens that include lifting weights several times per week. A strengthtraining program at Tufts University enlisted older men and women with moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis, and by the end of the 16-weeks program, participants reported their pain had decreased by an average of 43 percent while also decreasing the disability caused by their conditions. Strength training can also help improving balance and flexibility, which can decrease the likelihood of falling.

tips to ensure you take care of your body as you age
Retired professional athletes often speak about the difficult moment when they knew it was time to retire from professional competition. The transition can be easy for some but far more difficult for others. But aging amateur athletes know you need not be a professional to realize there comes a time when your body is telling you it’s time to ease up. Athletes are used to pushing themselves and stretching their limits, but some limits are best not pushed. Such is the
case with the limits posed by aging. While athletes don’t have to completely fold up shop and hang up their cleats, tennis shoes or other athletic equipment as they approach senior citizen status, there are steps aging athletes can take to ensure they aren’t pushing their bodies too far as they grow older. • Recognize your new recovery time. Veteran athletes tend to have a sixth sense about their bodies, knowing how long they need to recover from common ailments like ankle sprains, knee pain, back pain and shin splints. Despite the body’s remarkable ability for recovery, it’s not immune to aging, and that recov-
ery time will increase as the body ages. Whereas a sprained ankle might once have been as good as new after a few days or rest, aging athletes must recognize that the same ankle sprain now might require more recovery time. Returning too quickly from an injury can only make things worse for aging athletes, so don’t push yourself. • Take more time to warm up. As the body ages, its response time to exercise increases. This means the body needs more time to prepare itself for cardiovascular and strength training exercises. Increase your warmup time as you age, — Continues on page 11 —

exercise and fitness — Continued from page 10 —
gradually increasing the intensity of your warmup exercises until your body feels ready for more strenuous exercise. • Focus on flexibility. The more flexible you are, the more capable the body is of absorbing shock, including the shock that results from repetitive activities. But as the body ages, it becomes less flexible, which makes it less capable of successfully handling the repetitive movements common to exercise. Aging athletes should focus on their flexibility, stretching their muscles before
and after a workout. In addition, activities such as yoga can work wonders on improving flexibility for young and aging athletes alike. • Don’t stop strength training. Some aging athletes mistakenly feel they should stop strength training as they get older. No longer concerned about building muscle, aging athletes might feel as if they have nothing to gain by lifting weights and continuing to perform other muscle strengthening exercises. But the body gradually loses muscle mass as it ages, and that loss puts the joints under greater
active seniors
stress when aging athletes perform other exercises. That stress can put people at greater risk for arthritis, tendinitis and ligament sprains. While you no longer need to max out on the bench press or challenge yourself on the biceps curl, it is important to continue to make strength training a part of your fitness regimen as you age. Aging athletes need not as-
sociate aging with ceasing their athletic pursuits. But recognizing your limitations and the changes your body is going through is an important element of staying healthy as your approach older adulthood.
Did you know? According to a study conducted by the Harris Interactive Service Bureau, roughly 20 million Americans practiced yoga in 2012, a 29 percent increase from four years earlier. While some over 50 may feel their time to take up yoga has passed, nothing could be further from the truth.

HOBBIES
for the
golden years
From Metro Creative
Whether retirement is on the horizon or has already begun, more free time equates to an increased opportunity to fill your days with enjoyable activities. Individuals with busy schedules are often forced to push hobbies to the sidelines, as more pressing things, such as a job, household responsibilities, and parenting tasks, are accomplished. Once retirement arrives, a newfound freedom in your schedule may occur, and there can be plenty

of hours to devote to the hobbies and pastimes you find enjoyable. According to research, hobbies can have many benefits. They may serve as an emotional outlet or a way to relax. Hobbies can keep the mind and hands active. They also allow for quiet time and mind wandering — which can free up creative thinking. Hobbies can also serve as a means to connecting with people and opening up new groups of friends. There are many hob-
bies you can consider, depending on physical health and abilities. These may be hobbies you once enjoyed in the past or new activities to expand your horizons. And hobbies need not be crafty in the traditional sense, just about any activity — even being a mentor — can be a form of a hobby. Starting a hobby When deciding on a hobby, you can first take an inventory of — Continues on page 14 —

your skills and interests. If you have always been handy around wood and construction, perhaps a woodworking hobby will be enjoyable and also may work as a source of income revenue. Other activities that require the use of the hands and mind include knitting, needlepoint, painting, puzzles, quilting, scrapbooking and crocheting. These can keep the mind active and improve dexterity and fine motor skills. Next, you may want to consider the costs surrounding a hobby. While something like taking photos may have relatively low costs, collectibles,

exotic sports, sports cars and travel could become expensive. It’s important to weight the costs against your finances to ensure that you will be financially comfortable while engaging in this particular hobby. Explore what your friends are doing. If you want to get into a new hobby, ask neighbors and friends what they do to keep busy — and try it out. You just may find that you’re naturally inclined to do this type of activity and enjoy it. Visit a local hobby shop or craft store and browse through the aisles. See where your attention is drawn and give that activity a try. From building model trains to cultivating

Other pastimes A hobby can take the form of volunteer work, teaching, mentoring, joining a martial arts class, taking classes at a college, and even caring for a pet. If you are the type who likes to interact with other people instead of engaging in a solitary hobby, consider one of these types of activities instead. Once a hobby is started, it is not set in stone. If you find you do not feel motivated to do this hobby, try something else. rom the moment young men and women first walk into the office for their first day as a working professional until the day they officially retire, the notion of planning for retirement is never far from their minds. But when the day to hang up the briefcase and donate all those business suits arrives, some retirees wonder what to do next. Some retirees know exactly how they will spend their days when they no longer have to work, while others who decide to play it by ear may find themselves battling boredom. For those among the latter group, it’s important to understand that many retirees find themselves bored once they no longer have to focus on a career. Jobs keep men and women busy and provide a sense of purpose in their lives, so it’s understandable that retirees feel bored once those jobs are no longer a part of their lives. But just because you no longer have an office to go to every day does not mean life cannot be as fulfilling or even more fulfilling than it was when you were still working. You just need to find something to avoid succumbing to retirement boredom.

2 ways to fill your free time
Work part-time
Though it might seem odd to start working right after you retire, a part-time job can provide the type of structure you have grown accustomed to without all of the responsibility that comes with a full-time career. Part-time jobs can range from consultant work that makes use of your professional experience to something entirely different like landscape maintenance at a nearby golf course that gets you out of the house. Whichever you choose, make sure it’s something you find fun and interesting.
Volunteer
If a part-time job is not up your alley, then consider volunteering in your community. Volunteers are always in demand, and volunteering with a local charity can provide a sense of purpose and provide opportunities to meet like-minded fellow retirees, all while helping to quell your boredom. Retirees who love to travel can combine their passion for volunteering with their love of travel by signing up to work with an international relief organization that travels abroad to help the less fortunate. Upon retiring, many retirees initially find themselves coping with boredom. But there are many ways to avoid the restlessness of retirement.
care COMPLETE
Doctor’s vision leads to new brain center By Chris Starrs
After spending four years at the Shands Cancer Center’s Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Florida, Dr. Gordon Schoenfeld made a move to Athens in 2007 because he saw a medical need in the community that wasn’t being filled. A board-certified radiation oncologist, Schoenfeld’s vision for the Classic City encompassed comprehensive care for individuals diagnosed with brain tumors. He joined the University Cancer & Blood Center and began assembling the pieces of a health-care structure that would make it possible for patients to receive complete care without traveling to Atlanta or even farther way. “Cranial surgery was on my mind when I came here and I knew it wasn’t here and we needed it,” Schoenfeld says. “I saw a big opportunity, which is one of the reasons I came to Athens and joined the practice with like-minded physicians that supported that.” The month of April will see the opening of the Athens Brain Center, a division of University Cancer & Blood Center, which has seven locations throughout Northeast Georgia. The center will not only bring to the area stereotactic radiosurgery, but will continue the evolution of what Schoenfeld refers to as a “multi-disciplinary conference,” in which local experts from a variety of fields weigh in on cases brought before them. “The big picture thing is the center we’re creating,” Schoenfeld says. “We’re pulling together and improving something that’s already existing in our community, which is excellent health-care delivery with a multidisciplinary approach. And I feel with the community practices we have here and the technology and treatments that we’re offering, patients won’t need to travel somewhere else to get this excellent care.” Using the ExacTrac IGRT from Brainlab, a worldwide warrior in the

fight against cancer, the Athens Brain Center is able to provide care that is more exact, is less invasive and requires fewer treatments. New technology enables the Brain Center team to be more precise in locating tumors and in treating them and causing patients less discomfort during visits. NEW IN TOWN The radiosurgery program Schoenfeld developed in 2009 did not exist in Athens before then, meaning patients no longer had to be referred to physicians outside of the area anymore. The technology of frameless treatment affords Schoenfeld and his colleagues the ability to better define radiation treatment fields so that healthy tissue surrounding tumors isn’t affected, patient movement during procedures is more accurately tracked and patient outcomes are potentially improved. Gone are the days when brain tumor patients had to don metal bands — secured to the skull by pins and bolted to the treatment table — when they went in for imaging. “There’s nothing wrong with that system, but with the technology we have here and with the Brainlab system, our ability to give frameless treatment — which is much more comfortable and is much improved and allows flexibility in treatment and treatment planning — are things you don’t get with a fixed system,” Schoenfeld says. He adds that with a fixed system, a patient could count on spending most of the day at the doctor’s office and the system did not provide treatment flexibility. “With the frameless system, the patient comes in and gets a scan and can then go out and do what they want to do — play golf, go to work, see their family,” Schoenfeld says, adding that some 200 patients have been treated using the Brainlab system. “We’re doing all the work behind the scenes, making sure everything is ready to go. They come back in, and get on the ma-

chine — with nothing bolted to their head — and with our image system we can monitor their position within less than a meter of accuracy at all times while we’re doing the treatment. So if we treat a lesion, it takes 30 minutes or less. It’s a game-changer.” MULTI-DISCIPLINARY BOARD In addition to emerging technology, treatment from the Athens Brain Center is augmented by the neurooncology conference Schoenfeld has organized. A two-year-old board, including medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, neurosurgeons, neurologists, pathologists and radiologists, will review cases and advise attending physicians on treatment using their own particular specialties as a guide. “It’s a multi-disciplinary conference where we do case presentations on patients with brain tumors,” Schoenfeld says. “Anyone who provides care to the patients is invited to attend – it’s not a closed board. ... It will improve the standards and the care we give in the community. It’s a wonderful thing. A majority of the patients with brain tumors are presented; it’s an efficient way for someone who has a case that’s complicated to get to other disciplines so that patient doesn’t have to be referred to four different doctors, but
they still get the input from the doctors through input at the conference.” As the Athens Brain Center begins its progressions, Schoenfeld sees nothing but positive developments in the future. Aside from having the ability to receive excellent care without leaving the community, integration with students at the nearby Health Sciences Campus, which is affiliated with the University of Georgia Medical Partnership and Augusta University, home of the Medical College of Georgia, will pay quick dividends. “In the future, I see we’ll have more of a direct link with the university because there’s a lot of bench research, basic science research that goes on that’s unbelievable, and then it stops. There’s not this translation communication to go,” he says. “So for brain tumors, we’re creating something. If you have an investigator on the basic side developing something and they can’t go any further, they have a way to translate that to us and we can develop a trial for our patients and we can take the next step. I really think that’s going to be something that will mature with our center. “That’s the future for us. It’s going to be exciting.” For more information, visit www. universitycancer.com.
Honey
and your health
Can honey soothe a cough? Can the sugary goo be used to treat wounds and burns? What about those claims that honey cures hangovers and prevents allergies? Take a look at what’s true and what’s just might be wishful thinking.

Debunking myths about the health benefits of honey

oney has become an under-appreciated commodity in the United States, but knowing of its medicinal benefits can turn it from an everyday sugary goop to a necessary liquid gold. Honey’s first uses by humans can be traced back roughly 8,000 years ago to cave paintings in Spain depicting humans gathering honey from a beehive. It was used by Chinese, Greeks and Romans to help with wounds, and Egyptians used honey as 22

their most popular drug, even going so far as to make offerings of it to their gods. Millenniums later, the sugary sap is still cherished for its health benefits, but these benefits have become more folklore than fact as there are few studies pertaining to honey, many of which have not been substantially proven scientifically. Whether they’re true or not, its uses range from the bizarre — helping get over a hangover — to the useful — having antibacterial properties.
Myth: Honey prevents allergies
The pollen season of 2016 has dusted Georgia with a fine coat of yellow — inducing the itching, sneezing and coughing to which those with allergies have come accustomed. However, many local beekeepers and honey users claim these allergic reactions can be averted with a spoonful of fresh honey a day. “I have a number of customers who like to buy honey from the local area because it helps them with their allergies,” says Basil Campbell, owner of Apiary and Gardens in Athens and a beekeeper for 42 years. Beekeepers such as Campbell hold the theory that the trace amounts of pollen inside honey help the body build up antibodies to the allergen, preparing the body for allergy season — similar to a vaccine. It’s assumed that local honey is the best to eat because it contains pollen from plants in the area that cause allergic reactions. A small number of studies were conducted on the topic and of those, few prove any correlation between honey and seasonal allergy relief. Still, many beekeepers cite anecdotal evidence of its effects. Morris Cleveland, a beekeeper for six years at Healing Earth Farm in Hartwell, says he had one customer who bought one quart of honey to prevent her allergies. When she later returned, she bought eight quarts, saying, There’s nothing like being able to breathe at night.” “I myself, I have allergies,” Cleveland says. “So, this helps me tremendously.” Keith Fielder, the county extension coordinator for Putnam County for agriculture and natural resources at the University of Georgia, says honey’s allergy relief could have little to do with pollen in honey. Pointing to research from the British Journal of Medicine, Fielder, a beekeeper for more than 30 years, says honey has a “very, very low” pollen content and its probable ability to prevent allergies has more to do with its enzymes.
Verdict: Plausible •••
Myth: Honey soothes a cough
Most cough medicines comprise similar active ingredients, the most common being dextromethorphan, a suppressant, or diphenhydramine, an antihistamine. A 2010 study involving 139 children between ages 2 and 5 proved honey does just as well, if not better, than these common drugs in soothing a nighttime cough — something to which many local beekeepers can attest. Both Fielder and Branden Nordgren, a
six-year beekeeper and owner of Athena Bee Supply in Danielsville, recommend mixing a teaspoon of honey with some lemon juice and warm water to replace over-the-counter cough suppressants. “That is very, very soothing if you have a cold,” Nordgren says. Fielder noted the acidity of the lemon juice helps break down phlegm while the viscous consistency of honey coats the throat and acts as a soothing solution. Honey has also proven to ease a sore throat. Nordgren and Cleveland advocated for eating honey raw to calm a cough or a sore throat.
Verdict: True •••
Myth: Honey cures a hangover
Websites and magazines recommend coffee, greasy foods, sports drinks, saunas and even drinking more alcohol as ways to abate the head pounding of a hangover. Now, some beekeepers are chiming in saying their honey is also a miracle remedy. Some doctors say, if taken before drinking, the antioxidants, sodium, potassium and fructose in honey can help neutralize toxins or metabolize alcohol in the body. However, no studies have been performed linking honey to curing hangovers. “Maybe if you believe it hard enough, it works,” Fielder says. “But I wouldn’t attribute any hangover remediation on honey, no.”
Verdict: Myth
••• Myth: Honey is a sugar substitute At 64 calories per tablespoon, the golden goop contains roughly 20 more calories per tablespoon than granulated, brown or powdered sugar. But with the added benefit of natural glucose, fructose and minerals such as potassium, sodium, calcium, phosphorus, zinc and iron, many argue honey serves as a better sweetener. “Anything that calls for sugar, I replace with honey,” says Campbell, who uses honey to sweeten tea, coffee and even blueberry pies. Experts disagree on what ratio of honey is required per cup of sugar. Some, such as Nordgren, say to use half the amount of honey for the amount of sugar called in a recipe. Some say to match the amount of sugar up to one cup, then reduce the ratio of honey to sugar as the amount of sugar called increases. Others, such as Campbell, simply “wing it.” Many beekeepers claim eating honey every day is a good practice for improv-
ing overall health, such as Cleveland, who claims to eat about one pound of honey every few days. “My mother is all, ‘God, you’re eating all that honey, your sugar is going to be at a ridiculous rate,’” he says. “I just went for my physical and I’ve got the best health around. My cholesterol and everything is perfect and I’ve told them I eat that much honey.”
Verdict: True •••
Myth: Honey treats wounds and burns
Thousands of years ago, Egyptians, Chinese, Greeks and Romans used the sweet sap of a beehive to ease the pain and help treat wounds and burns. In the year 2016, honey is still being used for this reason and has much scientific backing to it. “Once the honey contacts the body’s tissues, the reaction occurs and hydrogen peroxide is released,” Fielder says. “That supplies oxygen to the wound, which can help the tissues heal faster. The sugars in honey are broken down already through the process of making the honey to a point that the body or the cells can pull carbohydrates directly from the sugars into the cell and help the healing process.” These points also play into honey’s antibacterial properties. By producing hydrogen peroxide, having an acidic pH, high sugar content and naturally drawing moisture out of the environment to dehydrate bacteria, honey has proven to reduce inflammation, stimulate the healing process and clear any infections from a wound. It’s strong enough to fight against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, MRSA, E. coli, strep and salmonella. According to Cleveland and Nordgren, all it takes is a bandage and enough honey to cover the wound. Campbell even uses honey on himself and his son. “It’s a little messy, but I put it on a sore, a cut,” Cleveland says. “It seems to help it heal.” The golden jelly has anti-fungal and antiviral properties alongside its ability to provide a quick, soothing effect and a proper healing environment for burns. “It tends to ease the pain of the burn,” Fielder says. “It keeps it moist, it keeps those tissues that have been damaged from drying out and basically forms a cap over that so no bacteria and fungi can start working in.”

Dating after 50
6
things to consider
From Metro Creative Sweaty palms, heart palpitations and nervousness are common first date symptoms. jitters still may be present even after all this time. Recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau finds that those over the age of 50 are now divorcing at double the rate of younger people. Loss of a spouse is another reason the over 50 crowd may once again be dabbling in dating. Recent reports say that 40 percent of online daters today are over the age of 50. Successfully navigating the waters of matchmaking sites or old-fashioned meet-and-greets means reacquainting oneself with a few handy tips. • Don’t open up with your extended history. Older daters have more life experiences and potentially a greater number of
past relationships. Recognize that you both may bring former spouses and even children to the table, but don’t feel the need to delve into all of your adventures (or misadventures) on the first date. Early dates are not for setting the entire course of your relationship. They’re for getting acquainted and seeing if this is a relationship you want to continue. Getting too personal right off the bat can sabotage a relationship before it starts. • Take it slow. There’s no need to rush anything along. Biological clocks or perceived societal notions no longer may be causing pressing relationship deadlines. Take the first date and any other subsequent dates at a pace that’s mutually agreed upon. It may take several months to years before all of

your truths come out, but for now focus on having fun until you’re both ready to share more. • Look for the positives. Before you decide a person is not for you, make a note of all of his or her positive attributes. What do you like most about him or her? Initial negativity or doubts may stem from your fear of rejection. Be open to others who may not fit your type. • Don’t get discouraged. The person you first meet may not be the right fit. Don’t let this turn you off of dating. The right person may be the next one around the corner. • Meet in public places. someone you don’t know well. Choose a public meeting spot, such as a busy restaurant. Ask a friend to check in on you via phone call. Consider a doubledate if you’re weary. Take your own car and meet at the date location rather than being picked up at home. • Wait for intimacy. It may take a while before you feel comfortable getting intimate with someone new. This person should respect your feelings and not pressure you into a physical relationship until you are both ready. Also, give the other person time to grow comfortable with intimacy. Dating after 50 means taking chances, going slow and exploring new relationship possibilities that make you feel comfortable.

Simple ways to maintain mental acuity

any people know a combination of a healthy diet and routine exercise is the best way to maintain their physical health. But what about mental wellbeing? 1) Find time for cardiovascular exercise Cardiovascular exercise can help maintain healthy weights and reduce their risk for potentially deadly ailments like diabetes and heart disease. But cardiovascular exercise also can boost brain power. Cardiovascular exercise pumps oxygen-rich blood to the brain, and that blood contains glucose that can fuel brain cells. Cardiovascular exercise also strengthens blood vessels, which can help prevent potentially devastating diseases, such as stroke,
Memory lapses are often assumed to be an accepted side effect of aging, but such an assumption is incorrect, as there are many steps men and women can take to maintain their mental acuity well into their golden years.
that can have a lasting and negative impact on cognitive function. 2) Make time for friends and family Many people need no reason to socialize, but those that do can now cite boosting brain function as a great reason to get together with family and friends. Routine socialization can keep a brain sharp by reducing its levels of cortisol, a potentially destructive hormone brought on by stress. Researchers also believe routine interaction with others stimulates structures
in the brain’s frontal lobe that are likely responsible for planning, decision making and response control. 3) Include fish in your diet A study from researchers at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center found that people who eat fish once per week have a 60 percent lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease than those who do not include fish in their weekly diets. Researchers credit this lower risk to DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid that is found in both the brain and in fish such as salmon and tuna.
Is dementia on the decline?
... research suggests it might be
By Allie Shah | Star Tribune (Minneapolis) Despite fears that the coming silver tsunami will trigger a dementia epidemic, a new study suggests that it may be possible to delay — or even prevent — some kinds of dementia. Dementia rates in the United States dropped by 44 percent from the late 1970s to 2010, according to the Boston University study. In addition, the average age when people showed symptoms rose from 80 to 85, researchers discovered. Their findings were published recently in the New England Journal of Medicine. The report analyzed data from a longrunning study of thousands of people in a small Massachusetts town. While scientists don’t know the ex-
act reason for the decrease in dementia cases, they highlight two contributing factors: education level and heart health. People in the study who earned at least a high school diploma had a much lower dementia risk than those with less education. Other studies have revealed a link between higher levels of education and better overall health. The largest decrease was reported in dementia cases caused by stroke and other vascular diseases. People in the study who improved their heart health saw a reduction in their dementia risk. Currently, about 5.3 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia.

travel ideas for active seniors
From Metro Creative
Those who have said goodbye to the work-a-day grind now have many hours to settle down and relax. People who have continually put off vacations in lieu of work responsibilities may now have all the time they need to explore the world. Traveling for seniors can be rewarding and relaxing. Those with a substantial retirement nest egg have numerous destinations at their disposal. Mature vacationers travel more frequently and stay longer than any other age group. Travel ranks among the top leisure activities for men and women over 50, according to the website Suddenly Senior. While certain destinations are not always practical for certain age brackets, there are many places to which seniors can visit comfortably and enjoy a wealth of memories. 1) Beach resorts Provided flying is medically safe, a beachside vacation can be the ideal trip for seniors looking for the utmost in relaxation. For those who have passports, the possibilities are endless. Those who prefer to remain on relatively domestic soil can retreat to Puerto Rico, south Florida, the California

coast, Hawaii, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. 2) Theme parks Though theme parks may seem carved out entirely for the adventure-seekers, there are many other more placid activities that would appeal to those who prefer to keep their feet firmly on the ground rather than looping through the air on a rocket-propelled coaster. With animal preserves, water parks, fine dining, and a bevy of hotels either in the park or directly on the outskirts, theme parks provide many activities for older travelers. Though theme parks require a lot of walking, many provide wheelchairs or motorized
• Do some networking. Seniors who log in to chat rooms or who are members of social clubs may have the scoop on age-based travel deals. Learn the ropes from others who have been there before you and take notes on which companies offer the best deals. • Explore airline perks. Men and women 55 and older may be eligible for “golden-agers” discounts at major airlines. Deals are not

scooters for those who need to get off of their feet. They also make a great option for seniors who will be traveling with the entire family, including children. 3) Guided tours Seniors who want to experience a piece of history can sign up for tour packages backed by reputable companies. The tours may involve train or bus travel, and various attractions will be visited. At the end of the tour, individuals can choose to extend the vacation by checking into a hotel nearby. 4) RV trips Another self-contained vaca-
typically advertised, so speak with an airline representative to secure the discount. Seniors also can request special services, such as baggage assistance, priority seating and a ride to the gate, at the airport. • Try negotiating with vendors. If you can’t find a senior discount, consider negotiating with vendors. Local hotels or businesses may prove more flexible than national chains.
tion that is entirely up to the people traveling is vacationing by recreational vehicle. Seniors can customize their routes depending on which areas they want to see. Companies like Cruise America RV enable people to rent an RV so they needn’t worry about the expense of buying one outright. However, should RV traveling become addictive, there always is the option of buying a camper later on. Setting an itinerary and then establishing the pace enables travelers to tour the country or cross the border as desired. From beaches to national parks, many areas offer RV hook-up areas and amenities. 5) Exotic tour Seniors who were never able to afford or spare the time for an extensive vacation may now want to visit those exotic locations that have beckoned for years. Now could be the time to book a ticket for Europe and visit all of the cities that have made the history books. Those looking for even more adventure can travel to the South Pacific and explore tropical islands. Others may want to go “down under” and experience the rugged Outback or the culture of Australian city centers.
• Embrace flexibility in scheduling. Seniors tend to have freedom with regard to the days of the week when they can travel. You have the flexibility to go and come as you please without having to coordinate with vacation time or school breaks. Use this to your advantage and travel during off-peak times when crowds will be small and rates may be lower.
