The Day The Music Died

By Reverend Andy Hawley

February 3, 1959, it was a cold winter night when a small private plane took off from Clear Lake, Iowa, heading for Fargo, North Dakota. Inside the plane were three of the hottest up-and-coming musicians of the day - Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "Big Bopper" Richardson. They were on "The Winter Dance Party" tour, set to cover 24 Midwestern cities in just three weeks. The plane never made its destination and these young promising performers were gone. Toward the end of 1958, Holly was going through a turbulent time with multiple changes occurring in his life. Not only had he left his home of Texas for New York, but he had also fired his manager and broke up The Crickets. He had been writing songs for several months and was designing his own studio, but Holly was becoming restless and found himself needing to perform. He also found himself spiraling into deep debt and needed something to help bail him out of potential bankruptcy. It was at this point he asked a promoter friend of his to put together a tour.

Preston and even had a hit record with his unforgettable song, Chantilly Lace. This tour was the last thing Buddy Holly wanted to be working on, but he needed the money. Richardson and Valens saw this event as a huge opportunity to reach a large audience and watch their dreams come true. "The Winter Dance Party Tour" covered twenty-four cities in a three week time frame with Holly as the headliner. Waylon Jennings, a friend from Lubbock, Texas and Tommy Allsup would go as backup musicians for Holly. Dion and The Belmonts were also added to round out the list of performers. The tour was a disaster from the start, playing small dates in frozen towns in the upper Midwest, with all the musicians crammed into a drafty bus. The tour was scheduled to play two shows that day and then to go to Clear Lake, Iowa for the next evening's performance. By the time they got there, everyone was in a bad mood. The Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa was never intended to be a stop on the tour, but promoters, hoping to fill an open date, called the Surf Ballroom, and offered them the show. The offer was accepted and the date of the show was set for February 2. Holly

Added to the tour was Ritchie Valens (Richard Steven Valenzuela) the first Latino to break into mainstream rock and roll music. He’d been discovered by record producer, Bob Keane, and he’d already put out several albums. A rock and roll pioneer and a forefather of the Chicano rock movement, Valens' recording career lasted only eight months. During this time, however, he scored several hits including La Bama and Donna. Jiles P. Richardson, also known as “Big Bopper” was a well-known radio DJ from Beaumont, Texas, who had set a world record for continuously broadcasting on air for six days straight and spinning 1,821 records. Known on the airwaves as a goofball, he was also a prolific songwriter and singer, having written songs for George Jones and Johnny

and his tourmates were on the eleventh night of their Winter Dance Party tour through the snow-covered Midwest. It was a Monday night, but more than a thousand teenagers crammed into the Surf Ballroom for two sold out shows. They wore blue jeans and saddle shoes and screamed for Richie Valens, whose single "Donna" was

about to go gold. By the time Buddy Holly arrived at the ballroom that evening, he was frustrated with the tour bus and told his bandmates that, once the show was over, they should try to charter a plane to get to the next stop on the tour, which was Moorhead, Minnesota. Between sets, Holly solicited people to join him on the charter airplane he'd hired to fly to the next show in Moorhead, Minnesota. The musicians had been traveling by bus for over a week and it had already broken down once. They were tired, they hadn't been paid yet and all of their clothes were dirty. With the airplane, Holly could arrive early, do everyone's laundry and catch up on some rest.

The show was split into two acts, with Ritchie closing the first act. After Carl Bunch, Holly’s drummer for the tour, was hospitalized, a member of the Belmonts who had some drum experience took over the drumming duties. When Dion and the Belmonts were performing, the drum seat was taken by either Valens or Holly. Each artist performed their hits, with Holly and his band playing Peggy Sue, Rave On, and the last song Holly ever performed live being Not Fade Away. Richardson had developed a case of the flu during the tour and asked one of Holly’s bandmates, Waylon Jennings, for his seat on the plane; Jennings agreed to give up the seat. When Holly learned that Jennings wasn’t going to fly, he said, “Well, I hope your ol’ bus freezes up.” Jennings responded, “Well, I hope your ol’ plane crashes.” This exchange of words, though made in jest

at the time, haunted Jennings for the rest of his life. Ritchie Valens had never flown in a small plane before, and asked Holly’s remaining bandmate on the plane, Tommy Allsup, for his seat. Tommy said “I’ll flip ya for the remaining seat.” Bob Hale of KRIB, who was working the concert that night, made the toss at the ballroom shortly before they departed for the airport. Valens won the coin toss, and with it a seat on the plane that night. Immediately after they took off, a cold N.E wind immediately gave way to a snow which drastically reduced visibility. The ground was already blanketed in white. The pilot may have been inexperienced with the instrumentation. Three young performers in their prime were taken in the crash. The rest of the story is history. The event has echoed through rock ‘n’ roll history for 50 years representing the end of the first bloom of rock anarchy and innovation, but it definitely didn’t die this day. Five years and six days later, the Beatles who learned their craft from Buddy Holly records and whose name is a shoutout to Holly’s Crickets, played the Ed Sullivan show. The music lived and got bigger than anyone in 1959 could have imagined.

Project Build

Consider an Engine Swap

In previous articles, we've covered everything from the dream of owning and finding a hotrod to discussing major areas of getting your vehicle put together the way you want it. In this article, we'll explore several possibilities when it comes to engine and transmission swaps or rebuilds. A hot rodder's engine and transmission swap can mean everything. For example, you may pull out your Ford small block and C-6 transmission just to drop in a Chevy big block and power glide transmission. I know it sounds odd to change brands, but in the hot rod world it's all about personal expression! My own truck is a 1954 Ford and I run a big block Chevy on nitrous and a two-speed power glide. It ain’t much on the highway but from red light to red light it’s second to none! As for the purest, only numbers matching will do. What is numbers matching? Simply put, it’s matching your car with the motor and transmission your car came with. If you have a numbers matching car, then an authentic build is in your future! In my opinion, there is only one place for an authentic build and that is Jasper Engines and Transmissions. I know what you're thinking, they're the big guy and I wouldn’t get personal attention to detail that I want. Nothing is further from the truth. I know firsthand because at my shop, Campbell's Customs, we only use Jasper for our authentic builds. I've toured their facilities and seen the work they do with my own eyes. I've met the guys that do the job and they're nothing more than gear heads just like us, and their warranty is second to none. My recommendation to you is this: if an authentic build is what you want then seek out a Jasper Engines shop.

I will try to explain a swap or upgrade and a good example is in my shop this week. We're working on a 1976 Blazer - yeah it’s a street rod in every sense because it’s black, low and sweet. It being tired and slow is the only real problem with this ride, so a swap was in order. We promptly pulled out the old 307cid V-8 and Turbo 350 transmission and put in a hot little 350cid V-8 backed up by automatic overdrive transmission. That’s right - a swap and an upgrade all in one. For this we used a crate engine from a local parts warehouse as well as a crate transmission. It was a plug and play solution. Crate engines and transmissions can be purchased from several sources, of course you have Jasper, but with them you will need a core or exchange. You'll get the best in tech service and advice, as well as warranty, for this seeks out a Jasper shop. Buying an engine from a parts warehouse? My caution to you is this: do your research! You need to know as much as you can before you drop your hard earned cash

Your Two Wheel Adventure Goals

Get more enjoyment out of your ride! It's a new year and it's the time for making new resolutions and setting new goals for yourself. Do you have goals and have you written them down? Did you know that people who have written goals are twelve times more likely to achieve them? Goals should be things that inspire or motivate you to do something, to work harder, or to pursue an accomplishment. I have objectives every year, a lot of them are very lofty aspirations, but I honestly feel I am capable of achieving them. I admit I'm one of those folks who don’t create lists, but I've noticed when I do write down objectives I tend to be more productive. Hence one of my goals this year is to write my goals down and refer to them. What does all of this have to do with motorcycling? You should have motorcycle goals. How about becoming a more involved motorcyclist, or completing your first track day, or getting that certificate from the Iron Butt Association? What you may discover is when you accomplish one of your goals it can manifest into creating new goals. When I started racing, the first thing I wanted to achieve was finish a race without crashing, which I did a lot of back in my early days. My next objective was to get competitive, and then I hoped to actually win a race. This year's goal is to defend my National Championship! Your goal might be to spend more time with your family awesome do it on a motorcycle! The cool thing about having motorcycle goals is the possibilities are virtually endless. You can end up making new friends, visiting a new

city or country, check out an event like Sturgis, start riding with your family or friends. Got the idea? Have a great new year, make some goals, write them down, and then go out and accomplish them. That reminds me, I need to go write down that I want to compete in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb this year!

The Tomato Head - Food Gotta Cook

12 Market Square / Knoxville, TN 37902 965-637-4067/ www.thetomatohead.com One of those days, as we worked the Easyriders Tour in Knoxville, feet were pounding, long hours and time for some good food and company. It’s funny, it seems as though we are always running, and on the road we connect with people from Atlanta, go figure!! We met some locals who own the Smoke Pit, a Cigar shop in Knoxville, that pointed us to an area called “Market Square”. This little hot spot is known as a local favorite area to meet, dine and socialize. Though it is rumored that everything is “only 2 blocks” in Knoxville, we headed up the street to locate the Tomato Head, a fresh bake house specializing in local food sources and organic product. We connected with Bubba of Hayseed Cycles and went for a beer tour of the area, starting with the White Mule PA of Woodruff Brewing Company in Knoxville. Then made a turn in the road as I had to try the Lazy Magnolia Southern Pecan Nut

Brown Ale from Kiln, MS and the Yazoo PA out of Nashville, TN. Dinner was an easy choice since the Tomato Head specializes in PIZZA!! But the choice was a little difficult because everything sounded so good. At the table we had to try one of their signature sandwiches as all the bread is made in house. The roast beef prepared with a Gorgonzola sauce, roasted onions and mayo, served HOT!! Also, there was no way to pass up the brick oven pizzas. Of course you could create your own from the page of options ranging from standards to specialty items, but #14 was a hit!! The pizza has fresh spinach, red onion, roma tomato, Kalamata olives, banana peppers, feta cheese, fresh oregano and andouille sausage. This was awesome!! It was a battle to stay away from the array of house made desserts including the Keylime Pie, House Cobbler or brownie. Not to mention the fresh baked cookies and cupcakes. But that is why we will be going back and maybe sooner than later. So, the next trip to Knoxville we will be heading straight back up the hill, about “2 blocks” and take another visit to Market

the Rat Rod invasion! Rat rods, in the world of automotive restoration these two simple words bring up many images. From sleek, flat-black, chopped coupes, to the rusty, barnyard finds. They all have one thing in common, that is they are all pieces of automotive artwork. The rat rod has long been ignored by the car building world, but, today, they have become a well established part of the hobby. With a blend of greaser, rockabilly, tattoos, bikes, and speed, the rat rod culture has made itself known and looks to be here to stay. The average rat rod builder is the guy down the street; works hard all day, comes home and turns the wrenches for a few hours a night. On weekends they like to turn the music up, hang out with good friends, and cruise the streets in their one of a kind ride. A rat rod is defined by its lack of conformity. It is the car hobby in its most simplistic form. These radical rides are generally the bad boys of the car show, with their big engines, chopped roofs, and channeled bodies. No two rat rods are alike, each is the vision of the individual builder. They range from mild to wild, as every rat rod contains the blood, sweat, and tears of the builder, and the finished product is a statement of that builder’s personality. The rat rod culture is truly a growing, grassroots movement. There are web sites, such as Ratrodnation.com, that deal strictly with the rat rod scene. Within these websites are tech boards that have hands on, step-by-step, instructions on how to do most any modification you would want to try. The

build threads, contain photographs of each step of the build, and are truly informative. The people in the grease scene are willing to help and give tips and info, you won’t find many snobs in this group of builders. Across America the movement has started to put out some great “Rat Rod” shows. Right here, in the Big A, Atlanta, Georgia, the rat rod is the featured attraction at Drive-Invasion, held at the last drive-in movie theater left in Atlanta. Always a great turn out, with live music, Garage71 is there with the G-Spot, the mobile radio station. You have Greaserama out in Kansas. This is billed as the Midwest’s Original Punk Rock Car Show, nothing but rat rods. The list also includes Viva Las Vegas, one of the largest gatherings of the culture in America. This show attracts thousands of rat rods and lots of great people. Of course, the movement has its own rat rod builders and shops in every town now. A couple of shops that are beginning to make a name in the culture are Greybeards Customs in Birmingham, Alabama, then there is Cornfield Customs in Batavia, Ohio. This man has gone from a tiny one car shop to a new place, with a dragster in the showroom and tons of room to build his creations for the customers. The shops are going in all across our great nation. The culture is closely tied to the music world. Most events include a wide range of music such as heard on Garage71.com (Shameless Plug: Garage71 is the number one Garage Rock Radio Station on the Internet), as well as live entertainment. The music

ranges from The Psycho-Billy Cadillacs to Johnny Cash. There is so much to enjoy. So, if you are looking for good times, bad cars and bikes, pin-up models, music, and a friendly group to chill with, just find a rat rod at any of your local shows and talk to the builder (he won’t be hard to find, just look for the crowds). It will be a conversation you won’t soon forget, and you might actually come away with some fresh ideas and a friend or two. As a favor to the hobby, take a kid to a car/bike show, and let’s pass the culture and love to the next generation.
