Killer Creek Harley Davidson Kicks off The Season Right! - another gREAT SAINT pATRICKS pARTY By: Tamie Landreth

Search “Killer Creek Harley Davidson” at greaseinc.com The sun came out and so did the crowd at the annual St Patrick’s Day party at Killer Creek Harley-Davidson. It was perfect bike riding weather and spirits were high among the attendees. Bikers were lining up early for the ride-in bike show to compete for awards, including People’s Choice, with their latest builds. A bag piper was dressed in full gear setting the ambiance for the day! Beautiful girls kilt tilting, Leprechaun hats - you were hard pressed to turn in any direction and NOT see the color green! Plenty of great food and cold beer were being served by lads and lassies, live music was provided by Rockasurus, and they had patch sewing and plenty of great vendors this year. The Killer Creek crew were busy with sales, giveaways, connecting with new costumers, and supporting the community organizations. Some good old fashioned fun was had by those who attended and we hope to grow the party bigger next year! So whether you are a bike enthusiast or just looking for a fun and entertaining outing, next year the St Paddy’s Day party at Killer Creek Harley Davidson is the place to be!

There is an expressed concern in the hot rod hobbies and cycle clubs that we are “aging” out; we are getting older and not recruiting younger “gear heads”. There is a parallel concern in the automotive and motorcycle industries that it seems harder to recruit experienced mechanics; those that can figure out and fix problems, not just replace parts! A good mechanic must know a lot about how complex parts of the cars of cycles work together. They must be able to work with electronic equipment that will tell them what’s wrong. They must be able to read and understand manuals and machines that are computerbased. At the same time, they must be able to use traditional power and hand tools effectively.

The automotive education programs in schools have shrunk in the face of cheaper and “cleaner” technology classes. This tech curriculum is important certainly; however, the automotive hobbies and ind ustries need to have a place where young men and women can experiment and determine their interests and aptitudes for “wrenching”, racing, automotive

/motorcycle repair & construction. Some clubs and associations have made it their job to go out and recruit younger folks to the hobbies and industries. For example, the powerhouse SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) gives students access to their event’s Education Days sessions, key industry events and the opportunity to walk the various show floors and also allow them to intern-to-work in exhibit booths. The Georgia Street Rod Association’s Membership Committee focuses on meeting with young students, high schools, and technical colleges to discuss interests, aptitudes and share their experiences. Recently, GSRA hosted an ex citing project called “Hot Rodders of Tomorrow” at a meet in Atlanta. “Hot Rodders of Tomorrow” is a nationwide high school engine building competition. It is amazing how including a little competition, stop watches, trophies, and scholarship money

The spectator draw for the competition is compelling and exciting; watching these young people ply their skills. One Georgia State Department of Education official who witnessed the Atlanta event said that next year they should have bleachers to better seat the growing audience! Hot Rodders of Tomorrow furnished the engines, the staging, and almost a dozen volunteers coming as far away as Detroit. The Georgia Street Rod Association furnished almost 20 volunteers for three days to set up and judge the event.

The action is so quick that there needs to be four judges for every five student team. Three to six teams are competing at the same time for trophies, scholarships and the right to compete in a national event at the huge SEMA event in Las Vegas in October!

can change things! Sponsored by various related and supportive businesses like Edelbrock and Winner’s Circle Speed Shops, teams of five students go against each other, with trained judges monitoring the process, in the dismantling and reassembly of a functional, fully equipped V-8 engine! My Time With The Nice Lady With The Nasty Voice by Reverend Andy Hawley She carries the title of the Queen of Rockabilly and this lady has definitely earned it with a career spanning five decades. Like an atomic bomb, Wanda Jackson opened the door for women in rock ‘n’ roll back in the 50’s, and empowered female musicians to be in control of their career, showed that they could be sexy, and proved men weren’t the only ones who could write about rock. In September 2008, she was nominated and inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 4, 2009 as an Early Influence, the first addition to the category in nine years. At the young age of 74, she can still rock just as hard as someone half her age. I had the pleasure to sit down with Wanda and discuss her career, how she met Elvis, and what projects she has in the works. Q: What was it about rock ‘n’ roll music that got you involved? A: Elvis Presley did. (giggles) When he hit the scene, I think it was ‘54, I graduated from high school in ‘55 and I had been recording for Decca Records two years at that time and had had a couple of little country hits. So, I was ready to go on tour and as it turned out, my dad got in touch with Bob Neal and he said he’d love to book some dates for me. He was busy booking some dates for this young man named Elvis Presley and he was really getting big everywhere all over the South and we could use a girl on the show. My dad said great and he traveled with me, so that was how I met Elvis. I know you didn’t ask about how I met Elvis, but that’s when rock ‘n’ roll was born. After knowing him for a little while and him hearing me, he said, “You have got to start doing this new kind of music.” I told him I just couldn’t because I’m a country singer. He replied, “Well, I know, but I’m country too, but you just kinda do it like this”, and I told him there’s no way I’m gonna sing like that. After a couple of years this music had gotten so big, and I was a teenager myself, I decided he was right and I was going to give it a try. Then it was very difficult to find material because nothing seemed right for a woman to sing, so I began writing my own songs.

What got me interested was strictly Elvis. He just turned the whole industry upside down and it was a frantic time trying to figure out what we country artists could record. Q: Do you think it was more difficult touring as a woman back in the 50’s and 60’s than it was for the men? A: It always is harder for a woman traveling and it still would be today. I don’t know how much of a difference it would have been back then. For me it was probably easier because I was younger. (laughs) I could carry my own suitcase then and walk in high heels at the same time. Q: How did the idea come up for Fujiyama Mama? A: I don’t know the writers for that song, but I heard it performed by Annastine Allen, she originally recorded it. I heard it for the first time while in a drug store, back in a time when you could get soda pop and play music on the jukebox in drug stores. I said to myself, I’ve got to find that song I loved it! I got the record and learned the song, then once I decided I was going to get into rock ‘n’ roll that was one of the songs I wanted to record. I pulled out all the stops and that’s the way you hear it on the original recording. Q: The Japanese people absolutely loved that song, didn’t they? A: Yes, America really wouldn’t play that song on the radio, but I found out it was number one in Japan and that blew me away. I figured they music not understand the lyrics. (giggles) It was number one

for six months back in 1959 and it was my first big hit, even though America didn’t really know who I was at the time. The Japanese people still love it today – each generation learns about the music, so each generation keeps the music alive. In fact, my first taste of being a celebrity was when I toured Japan back in ‘59. It was a bit scary for me, but they’re such well mannered people. If I left the hotel to go shopping, they would follow me in a very kind way giving my space. Q: Early in your career, it seemed that many of your critics felt the way you performed and sang was very taboo. Did you have to face any struggles or fight to do what you wanted to do? A: I didn’t have to fight my record company. My producer, Ken Nelson, was the best in the world at letting the artist decide what they wanted to do and how to do it. He guided us, certainly, but that was all. I didn’t face troubles with recording whatever I wanted to do, either that or my memory is bad, which it probably is, but nothing comes to mind. dressed the way I wanted to dress, you know I changed the whole look of a woman singer who used to wear the cowboy boots and the hats. That’s the way I started out, but boy after a while I said I can’t dress this way anymore. (giggles) I’m very short and it just doesn’t look good, so I changed my style. I never once heard any bad comments while performing in front of audiences. Now, I did hear a lot of comments about how pretty I was and how much they loved what I was doing. I was pretty feisty onstage, but the underlying thing is I have always been a lady first and foremost. Q: Today your name is as popular and as well known as your early days back in the 50’s, what do you think contributes to that? A: I attribute it to all the new fans of rockabilly music and latching onto it, claiming it, and making it as big as it is today. It’s amazing to me how the young adult people have found this music, and not only the music, but the lifestyle and they love it. I think that is because in the 50’s our lifestyle was so simple, very slow-paced, and I think deep down our people long for that time when things were more simple. Q: Do you have any projects in the works? A: These days there always seems to be a project going on in my life. My biography is being written

as we speak and I’m always working on new music. In recent years, there was a documentary that was released about my life and career called The Nice Lady with the Nasty Voice. It says basically what I was talking about before – I might come across as being a little bit raunchy, but I’m always a lady. Q: What advice or lessons can you pass on to up and coming musicians? A: I would encourage them to follow their dream to perform music and keep your goal in front of you. If you get sidetracked for a while that’s okay, but remember your goal and get back to it. I also tell young artists if you can think of any business or job that you could really be happy doing and you could live the lifestyle that you want, then you shouldn’t pursue a career in music. I say that because it can be really difficult with a lot of heartaches, but there are also a lot of highs to look forward to. Just follow your heart and follow your dreams. Q: Is there a special memory from your career that sticks out in your mind? A: I was asked to perform at the Grammy Awards in either 1970 or ‘71, I remember getting to meet all these celebrities I had only seen on TV or in movies. I was able to talk with Zsa Zsa Gabor, shook hands with John Wayne, and I got to meet Michael Jackson, of course he was just a little bitty boy at the time. My husband and I felt like we were in pretty high cotton at that time! I also remember during my tour in Japan, I’m not sure I ever got used to it, but when I would perform they would throw these little round streamers at me. They would throw these streamers at me and I would get covered in them while trying to catch them in my hands. So, I’m trying to sing while reaching over to grab these little streamers and when I’d miss they’d end up wrapped around my feet. The purpose of these streamers was to let me know they loved the music, because it wasn’t customary at the time for them to applaud or cry out for more. The more streamers they threw the more you knew they were enjoying the show. (laughs) I feel so fortunate, Andy, because all my life I’ve been able to make a living doing what I love to do. The only thing I truly feel confident doing is performing and I feel blessed that I’ve had a chance to travel and have all these adventures throughout my life. Thank you so much for wanting to speak with me about my life and always remember to follow your dreams.

Time To Ride!

Getting Your Bike Ready For The Season

Riding season is upon us - for some of us this winter was really warm and we rode all year, but I’m sure there are a few of you that put the bike up over the winter. I’m going to cover some simple steps that will help you get up and running safely for the rest of the year. One of the biggest problems with parking a bike is fuel-related issues. With ethanol in the gas, it can cause some serious problems with carburetor bikes. A simple way to prevent this is to add stabilizer to your fuel before you put it up. It’s too late to do

this, but keep it in mind for the end of the season. Also, if you’re having fuel-related problems you’ll want to consult a shop to get your fuel system out and checked. Getting ready for the year is pretty simple; I always remember the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) method to help with most problems you’re going to encounter. First, you’ll want to check the air pressure in your tires. Do this with your own tire gauge, or if you can haul the bike to a local gas station, most of them have air compressors with a built in

gauge. During seasonal weather changes the rubber of your tire expands and contracts, so the air pressure will change. Don’t ride without checking the pressure and adjust according to the levels listed on your tire. Next, you want to check your bike’s fluids and/or change them. Most people don’t change their oil before they put their bike up, so it’s always a good idea to start off the year with fresh fluids and knowing when to change them next. I like to perform a complete visual inspection of my bike to look for anything loose, chipped, or broken. While inspecting the bike, go ahead and lube all of your cables. Check the battery and you’re ready to ride!

CHEEKYS

By this time, everyone knows I am not a corporate guy. I donʼt like supporting the “man” or enjoy dining at those everyday chains that some may call food. However, if it is created regionally or is a small local franchise that still meets that feel from service to

quality of the whole experience, then I of course!! With that stated, I fell upon CHEEKYS Taqueria. Now, you ask, whatʼs the draw to another Mexican restaurant? How about the first ever pour your our beer from a tap at your table!!! Now thatʼs RoadKill... That is right. There are beer taps at specific tables that charge by the ounce. At only 25 cents per ounce, I was having a field day with Dos Equis XX. The first of its kind, owner Jose Hevia, has brought some great flavors, all fresh to the northern neighborhoods of Atlanta. The menu ʻpopsʼ with flavors. There is spice, sweetness, heat and depth. There are an array of various salsas to choose from their Guajillo, which is mild and smooth chili flavors to Morita with a smoky pungent spicy finish! The Taco selection is excellent and ranges from Crab Cakes, to Sliced Pork, Steak and Shrimp. There are more to choose from or you can have a selection of 3, served with

in house styled rice and a choice of Charros or Refired Beans. The appetizer menu selection is packed with various flavors from authentic Ceviche to an in house favorite Cheeky Wings!!! The Fajitas were screaming fresh as we saw the table next to us share a huge serving a fresh vegetables and a combination of Steak, Mushrooms, Zucchini, Onions and Peppers. As I enjoyed my free pours on the tap, I had time to speak with our bar tender and learn a lot about the extensive Margaritas. If you are a connoisseur of Margaritas, then this is the place for you to warm up this winter... I know, already planning my next visit so I can try the ʻfamousʼ Cuban, with thinly sliced chili rubbed pork tenderloin, ham, swiss cheese, dill pickles and mojo mustard. This and my newly found experience of pouring my own XX at the table rocks!!! ople”
