Welcome to Through the Maze Hello and welcome to our Through the Maze Newsletter. We hope that you enjoy our Summer Newsletter. There is a lot happening during Learning Disability Week. People in Action People In Action have some exciting new courses starting this summer! The courses are designed to help you improve your health and wellbeing, learn about your personal safety, and connect with your friends, old and new! Be Well Come and join our Be Well group where you will get the chance to learn about fitness and nutrition, develop your own fitness plan and visit different sporting venues across the city. Tuesday’s from 1:00pm  4:00pm Design It Yourself Join our workshop where you can take part in a range of art activities, get creative and make new friends. Tuesday’s from 1:00pm  4:00pm 5

Dramability Have fun exploring movement, voice and drama whilst building your confidence and making friends. You will also have the chance to be in a production of your own, sharing your achievements with other! Wednesday’s 5:45pm  7:45pm Ready, Steady, Cook At Ready, Steady, Cook you will have the opportunity to learn about healthy foods, plan and prepare a meal, buy the ingredients, develop your cooking skills and learn how to be safe in the kitchen. Wednesday’s 11:00am  1:00pm Employability Learn about volunteering and how it can help you improve you skills, experience, confidence and employability. Thursday’s 11:00am  2:00pm 6

Body Image In our Body Image workshops we talk about lots of different issues, from how we build and maintain safe relationships to the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Wednesdays from 6:00pm  8:00pm Independent Lives You will learn about managing your money, paying bills, household chores, shopping and cooking on a budgets. Friday’s 11:00am  2:00pm Connecting Lives Join our Connecting Lives groups and enjoy evenings out, visiting bars, restaurants, nightclubs and leisure activities with friends, 18 – 25’s meet on a Wednesday from 6:30pm  9pm 25’s and overs meet on a Thursday from 6.30pm  9:00pm 7

Outdoor Pursuits Join our popular Outdoor Pursuits group where you will improve your fitness, learn about the countryside code and how to stay safe when outdoors. Sunday’s 10:00am  3:00pm You will have the chance to gain a certificate though the National Open College Network (NOCN) and the Arts Award. Or just come along to develop your skills, have fund and make friends. SLATE SLATE is a charity that employs people with learning disabilities. We have two charity shops, one in Hunslet and one in Armley. It is fun working on the van but we need to be careful. It can be dangerous too. We always wear special clothing to protect ourselves. We wear steel toe capped boots, gloves and a high viz vest. We collect and deliver furniture all over Leeds. Sometimes we go even further. We get to meet lots of people in the community. If you see a SLATE van wave and say hello. If we see you we will wave back. We’ve Got Pride 2016

This year the annual Connect in the North We’ve Got Pride event will be a variety show. A chance for people with learning difficulties to show off their talents. If you want to perform please let us know. We can send you a form to fill in. To let us know about your performance and how long it will be.

People Matters

People Matters run Active Matters and Active Arts member led groups. Make friends and improve wellbeing.

Active Matters group take part in physical activities. Such as sports, games, healthy eating, yoga and dance.

Groups Women’s Health Matters Do you want to be in a women’s group for women with a learning disability/difficulty? We will get together, have a cuppa and talk about our health.

Pass it on People Out and About Anthony, Janet and Sapphire were at Tiger Tiger for Leep the Bridge club night in April. What is it?

It’s a club night for adults with learning disabilities.

Where is it?

Tiger Tiger The Light 117 Albion St Leeds LS2 8DY

Was it easy to get to?

It was in Leeds City Centre. It’s not far from the Merrion Centre. There are lots of buses which go there. There is lots of parking near by.

Was it accessible?

There is a lift and someone to help you use it.

What did you like about it?

We met up with our friends and made some new ones. We really liked the coloured dance floor. It was like ‘Saturday Night Fever’. There was a bar and drinks were cheap until 9:00pm. The Skyfallers were brilliant. They are a band who played live. We like that it didn’t finish until 10:00pm We are all going to go again. 16

Aspire Olympics 2016 Over 20 Events including Running, Wheelchair Racing, Cycling, Boccia, Cricket, Golf, Tug-o-War, Rounders, Long Jump, Javelin, Volleyball, Relay. All taking place on the athletic track and the rugby pitch. 

Opening Ceremony will be performed by Dramarama.



All competitors will receive a medal.
