As an original rock band they've not only managed to survive but thrive, playing original music for 8 years to the kind of audience that loves something new every night. The audience rappxirt is so intense that you'll often find people on stage to join or replace them by the nights end. They cover all musical styles and a variety of topics that keep them consistently fresh in this age of formulas and regimented pablum. That's why they still aren't signed. Record companies don't know how to categorize them. Meanwhile fans return with alarming frequency to see what's new.

Jam is sort of a new band. Two of the group's members, Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard, used to be with

Mother Love Bone, one of the first to evolve out of the omnipresent music scene in Seattle. In early '90, Mother Love Bone dissolved following the loss of vocalist Andy Wood who died from a drug overdose. Gossard and Ament decided shortly thereafter to continue
working together. PearlJam was ultimately rounded out by guitarist Mike McCready,
drummer Dave Mruzzesse (who replaced Dave Krusen shortly after the group's formation) and surfer-cum-vocalist Eddie Vedder. With a quick name change from Mookie Blaylock (a moniker taken from the New York Nets guard of the same name) things were in place. The band then recorded their debut on Epic Records, Ten, a embraced by groove and emotion, power and melody.

Does Pearl Jam have the potential of being around for some time? We're planning on making music for a long time. That's even the attitude at the label. We had a really great lunch with Dave Glew who's the president of Epic and his whole conversation was about growth and building the band slowly. He's familiar with that because he was with Atlantic when they were building bands like Bad Company and Led Zeppelin. It took a long time for those bands to take off. Now, if a band doesn't happen by the first record they might get a second shot If it doesn't happen by their second record they're dropped. The theory is. Epic is going to go back to the old school and build bands. That's great news to me.
