aking charge of your children’s education is certainly a noble act. We here at THSC believe that families have a God-given right to raise their children as they see fit. As such, we strive to protect those families who decide to answer the calling to teach their children themselves.

Over the past 32 years, THSC had been working relentlessly to support and empower homeschooling families throughout Texas by providing resources, advocating for and promoting homeschooling, and keeping a watchful eye on the Texas Legislature. Called to Teach is the culmination of our efforts. Since we believe that homeschooling is the best model for educating children, we strive to equip homeschooling families with all the tools they need to educate their children. In the Exhibit Hall you will find countless teaching resources, curriculum guides and learning materials to assist you in your homeschooling journey. The many sessions and workshops will both edify and revitalize you. With so much to offer, Called to Teach promises a wonderful experience for everyone. We hope to educate you on the foundation upon which THSC was built—freedom. However, the freedom we depend on to continue raising up our children can disappear in an instant. It is our ultimate goal to ensure that every family in Texas is free to pursue homeschooling without the threat of oppression. At this very moment, lawmakers in the Texas Legislature are writing, revising, and reviewing bills for the next session which could affect our basic family rights and freedom to homeschool. Because of this, and thanks to your support, THSC is already meeting with legislators and preparing. We are working together to ensure the liberty to raise your own children is safe. To learn more about THSC’s influence in the Texas Legislature, visit the THSC booth in the Exhibit Hall and ask how you can help secure our freedoms. Thank you for partnering with THSC in Keeping Texas Families Free. Enjoy the Convention! In your service and His,

2018 Keynote Speakers

PAM TEBOW

Ken Ham, originally from Australia, is the president and founder of Answers in Genesis and the highly acclaimed Creation Museum. He also oversaw the construction of the popular full-size Noah’s Ark in Kentucky. As one of the most sought-after Christian conference speakers and talk show guests, Ken is recognized worldwide as a strong voice for creationism and biblical truth. He became internationally known for his 2014 creation versus evolution debate with Bill Nye “the Science Guy,” which has been watched by an estimated 25 million people. A biblical apologist, Ken gives numerous faith-building talks to tens of thousands of children and adults each year on topics such as the reliability of the Bible, witnessing more effectively, dinosaurs, “races,” how compromise over biblical authority has undermined society and the church, and more. Ken is also a published author and popular radio host. He and his wife Mally reside in the Cincinnati area. They have five children and 16 grandchildren.

Pam Tebow, the mother of successful college and NFL quarterback Tim Tebow is a homeschool pioneer along with her husband Bob. They began teaching their children at home in 1982, before the term homeschool was even coined. All five of their children were homeschooled from kindergarten through high school and each one received college scholarships. The Tebows lived for several years as missionaries in the Philippines, where Bob continues to have a ministry, the Bob Tebow Evangelistic Association. Pam loves speaking to families across the country, having become more widely known since Tim Tebow won the Heisman Trophy. After ESPN aired Pam’s comments about refusing to abort “Timmy,” she has gained a national platform to spread the pro-life message. Pam passionately encourages women to trust the Lord and use the incredible influence God has given them to eternally impact their world. Additionally, THSC is proud to support the Tim Tebow bill in Texas, which would allow homeschoolers to participate in extracurricular activities offered at local schools.

SUZANNE FASKE

TIM LAMBERT

Suzanne and her husband Jay are founders of Here I Am Orphan Ministries, a Christian nonprofit ministry dedicated to reaching orphaned children within the community and abroad. Their desire is that every child knows the love of a family and their Heavenly Father. Jay and Suzanne are the parents of three birth children, 24 adopted children, and two foster children. Their adopted children are from seven different countries and speak more than 10 different languages. Their adopted and foster children come from a background of trauma. Some of the Faske’s children were babies or toddlers when adopted, but most of them were older children who were considered unwanted children. Many have medical special needs. Suzanne has been a homeschool mom for more than 20 years. Her heart is that children from hard places find healing in loving families, get a good education, and break the cycle that led to the painful past that made them orphans.

Tim Lambert is president of the Texas Home School Coalition, the largest state advocacy organization for homeschool families in the U.S. Tim has been instrumental in developing the homeschool community into a recognized political force in Texas. As an authority on home education and parental rights, Tim has testified before numerous Texas legislative committees. He regularly engages with state and federal government agencies, such as the Texas Education Agency, Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, and the Social Security Administration. He has testified as an expert witness on home education in various court cases and was appointed by Governor Rick Perry to serve on a parental rights advisory committee to Child Protective Services. STEPHANIE LAMBERT

Texas Home School Coalition— Booth #504 Stephanie Lambert was homeschooled before homeschooling was officially legal in Texas, because her parents had a vision for instilling strong values and providing a quality education to their four children. Since graduating, she has volunteered for various political campaigns (including President George W. Bush's campaign) and served as a staff member on Texas Governor Rick Perry's campaign. Stephanie ultimately dedicated her life to serving Christ through her local church and her work with the Texas Home School Coalition (THSC), the homeschool, family advocacy and support organization for the state of Texas. During her time with THSC, Stephanie has served as Director of Events, Director of Development, and now as THSC’s Executive Director. She has a passion for empowering and encouraging parents to raise their children to know Christ and be the next generation of leaders our country needs.

PETER LAMBERT

JAN BEDELL

Peter Lambert is a small business owner with many years of experience in youth-related work, including Director of THSC’s Teen Staff. He and his wife Rita are beginning homeschool parents of an inquisitive five-year-old. Peter greatly enjoyed his own homeschool education, and considers himself a highly gruntled homeschool graduate. However, he warns that his childhood exploits as a student have been clouded in myth and legend by the mists of time, so you can’t believe everything his mother says in those other workshops.

In 1992, Jan started a journey that turned her from desperate homeschool mom of a struggling learner to a master neurodevelopmentalist. With her knowledge of how to optimize brain function, coupled with her previous experiences as a public, private and homeschool teacher, she understood that education is more than just technique and curriculum. She found hope and help for her daughter through The NeuroDevelopmental Approach, which ensures that the brain is ready for learning. Dr. Jan Bedell, aka Brain Coach™, has worked in this field for over two decades. She is the founder of Little Giant Steps (LGS), the chairman of Steps of Hope, and the chairman of SPED HomeSchool, both 501(c)(3) organizations. All these organizations are dedicated to helping children, teens and adults reach their fullest God-given potential, regardless of whether they are gifted, typical, or challenged. Curriculum development and training programs for parents and professionals has been Jan’s specialty. Her passion is making life and learning easier for millions, and her approach is life-changing!

9 A.M. WORKSHOPS Ken Ham (Salon A) Why the 20's Generation Will Change the Church and Culture Research shows that two-thirds of young Americans are leaving the church, with few returning. Ken Ham looks at data published in his book ”Already Gone,” which shows that this mass departure is largely being caused by a lack of foundational apologetics and a biblical worldview. He compares this data with new research published in “Ready to Return,” showing that the millennial generation has a more secularized worldview than ever before. Millennials who attend church are going to be the voice of the Church in the future. Take a stand on biblical authority, root out compromise and teach apologetics. Reclaim lost and coming generations for Christ! Rick Green (Salon B1) With ALL Your MIND The Bible tells us to think on those things which are noble, good and true; to let the weak say they are strong; that as a man thinketh, so is he; and so on. Neurological science is

proving the Bible right once again as it reveals to us how God designed the brain to be renewed—literally rewired and retrained. When we intentionally, purposefully and consistently wash our thoughts with His word and program our computer with His promises, the brain is literally remade. The old neurological connections are overridden with new ones, and we truly replace the old man with what Paul called the new man. Learn how to practically replace bad habits, how to restore a joyful attitude and how to instill your children with one of the most important life skills of all—renewing the mind! Susan Seay (Salon B2) The Intentional Mom With busy schedules and long to-do lists, it’s easy to get swept up and feel lost, but some moms seem to thrive in the midst of it all—the Intentional Moms. Come to an encouraging message for moms to remind you that no matter what you may be facing, God didn’t make a mistake in choosing you to be the mom. Learn a practical tool that has helped moms to silence “the committee” (those cranky voices in your head). Becky Muldrow (M6) Creating a Four-Year Plan For Your High School Student A detailed plan can pave the way for a smooth high school experience. Come listen as Becky walks you through the creation of a comprehensive four-year plan. You’ll personalize what you learn and pencil in a plan that will motivate both you and your teen! So, What’s the Dad Supposed to Do?

Discipline With Love So We Don't Break Our Child’s Spirit

What is a father’s responsibility before the Lord? Aren’t most homeschools the domain of the mother? Tim Lambert, a homeschooling dad of 16 years, helps dads discover their part in a successful homeschool experience for their families. Jan Bedell (M5) Riding the Reading Roller Coaster of Dyslexia Have you ever been at the top of a roller coaster anticipating the next plunge? Aaaaaah! Is teaching your child to read much like a roller coaster ride? “You knew that word yesterday!” you say in amazement when your child doesn’t recognize the same word today. This is a mystery akin to going through a dark cave on the roller coaster, where everything you were carrying fell out. There doesn’t seem to be rhyme nor reason as to why your teaching strategy is not working. Don’t settle for coping and compensating, expensive dyslexia programs or the limitations of labels. What age is too old or too young for certain discipline? … and the list goes on. Come and join me as we discuss essential principles that we must understand before discipline can be effective. Parents, if we’re not careful, even with the best of intentions, we can absolutely damage our children’s precious spirits. Join our panel for a valuable Q&A session. We address increasing scrutiny, suspicion and even intolerance from many elected and appointed officials as the popularity of homeschooling has increased and as successful graduates have entered the public eye. Ken Ham (Salon A) How to Present the Gospel in Today's Secularized Culture Today, most missionaries and evangelists do not see Genesis as a key to reaching people with the Gospel. In these times, however, an understanding of the history recorded in Genesis (e.g., the origin of sin) is foundational to fully grasping the Gospel message. Realizing how our culture has changed its thinking regarding earth history is critical to knowing how people should be presented with the Gospel! Dr. Emerson Eggerichs (Salon B1) If It Weren’t For the Kids, I’d Be a Great Parent! Emerson Eggerichs gives practical tools and hilarious insights on how to be a parent who functions in freedom. Susan Seay (Salon B2) The 10 Questions You Should Ask Your Children Every Year It's amazing how one good question can open up a rich conversation. Now, imagine having 10 good questions. For the past 12 years, Susan Seay has asked her children the same 10 questions every year. She encourages every parent to have a one-on-one with each of their children each year and ask those same 10 questions. Children’s answers will reveal hidden issues that are on their hearts and will help bring you closer than ever. This blueprint for deep conversation will build a lasting connection. Roxanne Parks (M6) Surviving and Thriving Through the Teen Years Roxanne gives 12 insightful ways to understand and keep sanity through the often-turbulent years of hormones and teenagers. Jan Bedell (M1-4) To Label or Not to Label … That is the Question Is your child struggling behaviorally or academically? Have you wondered if she or he would be labeled if tested, or are

you feeling devastated by labels already received? This workshop is for you! The neurodevelopmental approach looks at the whole child and teaches parents to accelerate progress by identifying root causes rather than just coping and compensating. Most labels are symptomatic (a list of symptoms). Each of those symptoms has a root cause. Once you are equipped to address foundational issues, you will be able to say no to labels and yes to hope! Stephanie Lambert (M5) What is THSC Thinking? The Purpose and Goals of Your State Organization Why are we active in politics? What are our goals in the legislature? Why pass the Tim Tebow bill? Where is the online opposition coming from? What is THSC’s purpose, anyway? How will we protect freedom for the next generation? THSC’s executive director Stephanie Lambert will share the heart and vision of your state homeschool organization. Jennifer Bauer (M9) Overcoming Doubt and Discouragement in Your Homeschooling Journey Doubt and discouragement can come in many forms—financial difficulties, lack of emotional and physical support, unmotivated children, questions about your abilities and many other pressures. In this encouraging talk, Jennifer Bauer (graphic artist for the Master Books Homeschool Curriculum) will share how she fought and overcame the temptation to give up on homeschooling her seven children. She will offer practical tools that you can take home and immediately start implementing. God has called you to homeschool, so trust Him with the details and cultivate a thankful spirit even when you’re in the trenches. You are not alone and you can do this! SCHEDULE

MIGHTY MEN OF VALOR

MAY 10-12, 2018  51

Sponsored by The THSC Teen Staff is a one-of-a-kind experience. It was created to serve the Called to Teach Conventions but has grown to be so much more! Teen Staff not only serves our beloved Convention attendees, it also allows teens to develop valuable skills and provides a platform for teens to build valuable friendships within an atmosphere of service-minded teamwork. Each teen will be placed on a team. Over the course of the Convention, teams will move through a series of workshops, activities and service jobs. Teens in this program are pushed to be hardworking, mature and responsible team players and leaders in every activity they participate in.

Workshops

“Developing a Truly Christian Worldview” Ken Ham (bio found on page 15) “Defending the Christian Faith in Today's World” Ken Ham (bio found on page 15) “Homeschooling Ruined My Life: Will You Ever Wish You’d Taken a Different Path?” - Peter Lambert (bio found on page 26)

Attention, Parents! Lunch is not provided. Your teen may meet up with you or eat on their own with friends. Please plan accordingly. We recommend that you schedule a specific time and place if you wish to meet up with your teen. Check-in and opening activities will be held in Champion's Ballroom 1 on the second level. If you need to find your teen during scheduled events, check with Base Ops (located in the second-level foyer). Teen Staff will be treated as young adults. They need not be checked in or checked out by parents. Teens will move about the facility freely during service jobs, breaks or other scheduled activities. If you wish to meet up with your teen, please make prior arrangements as to when and where you wish to meet. Please make your teen aware of your own family rules for the Convention. All questions regarding Teen Staff should be directed to Base Ops. Teens are expected to conduct themselves in a manner respectful of Teen Staff, Convention leaders and speakers. For the benefit of Teen Staff as a whole, teens who are disrespectful and uncooperative will be excused from the program.
