TOWN HALL

Thelonious Monk was one of the most influential musicians in history, recording as a leader on Blue Note and performing alongside the likes of Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and John Coltrane.

The launch of this year’s Supersonic Festival takes place at Town Hall, Birmingham and will be led by the formidable fingertips of Anna Von Hausswolff, seated at the historic 1834 organ.

In celebration of the legendary pianist’s music Martin Speake (alto saxophone), Hans Koller (euphonium, piano), Calum Gourlay (bass) and James Maddren (drums) formed Thelonious, as a monthly residency at London’s Vortex in January 2015, performing from memory Monk’s entire songbook. For this special performance celebrating Monk’s centenary, Thelonious joins forces with New York guitarist and Monk expert Steve Cardenas.

The classically trained vocalist and composer draws from her background in avant-garde music as well as her love of black metal to create thundering dark clouds of drone and doom, lined with a beguiling light of fragility and emotional sensitivity; a sound unequivocally hers. Kid Normal tells the story of Murph Cooper. When he rocks up to his new school several weeks into the beginning of term, he can’t help but feel a bit out of his depth, because his mum has enrolled him at a school for superheroes by mistake… But just because Murph doesn’t have superpowers, it doesn’t mean he can’t save the day! Please note that your ticket will also entitle you to a copy of the book, Kid Normal, which can be collected from the Foyles stand on the night, or from Foyles, Grand Central Birmingham for up to 14 days after the event. This event will be signed by a British Sign Language Interpreter.

Shapla is one of Britain’s most successful British-Bangladeshi artists, mixing traditional Bengali music with jazz and funk influences to create what she describes as the perfect blend of east and west. Her soulful sound has captivated audiences worldwide, from London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall and Houses of Parliament to Canada and Italy. Shapla will be supported by Roji Sarkar.
