“The Lessons of Manna” There are so many valuable lessons to learn from the Children of Israel concerning their exodus from Egypt and their journey to the Promised Land. Example, Egypt represents the land of not enough, where you were before your Christianity; the Wilderness represents the land of just enough, where you were when you first got saved. The Promised Land represents the land of more than enough, where God wants you to end up at. But I want to focus on just one; “The Lessons of Manna” Exodus 16: we read that just 30 days out of Egypt the Children of Israel have failed their first test, the test of hunger. “And the whole congregation murmured against Moses & Aaron in the wilderness.” “Would to God that we had died in the land of Egypt.” Why are they so angry at their Pastor Moses & Aaron? They are just as hungry as anybody else. The Children of Israel were crossing over into a new level of living, anytime you are “crossing over,” you will run into “a place of pressure.” And if you only have partial knowledge of what God is doing, then it will cause you to strike out against God and His ministers. This is still happening today, when a loved one dies, they blame God, when something bad happens in life, they blame God. It is because of “Pressure and Partial Knowledge.” Ex.16:4 “The Lord said unto Moses, I will rain down bread from heaven for you.” The Children of Israel had been on an Egyptian diet of spices for 400 years, God knew He had to bring them into the right diet of vitamins & nutrition for their walk through the wilderness. Ex.16:4-5 “…and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate everyday…and on the 6th day they shall gather twice as much.” The first thing to notice is that with every provision God gives, He also gives His instructions. Vs.31 “…and it tasted like wafers & honey.” God could have put it in a disgusting bowl of gruel, but God always wants to please His people. After God had commanded a “certain rate January 2015
for each man…some gather more…and worms grew in it and it stank.” If we want God’s provisions, we must follow God’s instructions, but we, just like the Children of Israel, want to do things our way, so we end up creating our own “golden calf” to worship just like they did. That’s why it took them 40 years to get out of the wilderness when in fact it was just an 11 day journey. Until you learn “The Manna Lesson” God will just make you take another lap around the wilderness, remember, it’s you who are running out of time! Also notice that the manna was lying outside their tent door every morning after they had slept. They didn’t have to work for it, it wasn’t based on their goodness, and it was based on God’s Grace for them. The reason the manna was lying everywhere but God restricted them to a certain rate per person, God was preparing them for the Promised Land. They needed to learn how to be around abundance that was within their reach and leave it alone, to be content, if not you’ll always be reaching for more and never enjoy what you have. Everything within your reach should not be consumed. That’s why most people winning the lottery are broke in a year or two. Just because you have good credit, doesn’t mean you should borrow money for everything you see! I can spot “NEW MONEY” a mile off, my old Indian mother use to tell me, “Son, just act like you’ve been there.” Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

K.I.S.S. page composed & edited by: Toni McCoy Shearon aka “MaMa Thunder” of Thunder Roads National Founders’ Office. NEW YEAR’S 2015 SLOW ROASTED PORK 1 5 lb. Pork Butt *Make sure there’s a layer of fat on top or else it will be dry and tasteless) Make a dry rub and rub all over with your hands: Salt & Pepper to Taste, Small Palmful of Garlic Powder, Small Palmful of Sage, Parsley, Rosemary, Thyme & Smoked Paprika. Mix all dry ingredients in a small bowl. Take a full cup of quality Balsamic Vinegar and over medium low heat cook it down until it’s nice and syrupy. Pour into dry ingredients and combine well to make a rub. Rub it all over pork butt thoroughly. Let sit 30 minutes so all those delicious flavors can seep in. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a roasting pan with high sides that has been oiled down well, place pork butt in center with fat side up. Add 1-1/2 cup of Mulled Apple Cider as your roasting liquid. Make sure throughout the cooking process that you always have a full inch of liquid in the bottom of roasting pan. Roast the pork for 30 minutes at the 400 degrees, turn the heat down to 250 degrees cook for a full 6-1/2 hours. The pork should have a deep golden brown caramelized color. Remove to serving platter and cover with aluminum foil, sealed up well all around and let the pork rest for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, place the roasting pan on the stove on medium high, sprinkle a half cup of flour all over and mix in with all the drippings and liquid from cooking the pork. Be sure and get out all the lumps. Slowly add in up to a 1-1/2 cups of hot water....slowly, until it starts bubbling up and then turn down to low until it reaches a good gravy consistency. Salt & pepper to taste. OMG! If you have never had pork gravy it is literally one of the best tastes ever! Cut 1/2 inch slices of your pork and fan them out on a serving platter and pour just a small line of gravy over the entire fan but make sure you have plenty of gravy for the rest. This is fancy pork. My Mom used to make it almost every Sunday and my favorite part was the gravy. Fabulous!
SPECIAL CHEESY MASHED POTATO BAKE 2 Containers of Bob Evans Regular Mashed Potatoes (or any predone taters in a tub) 2 Containers of Bob Evans Sour Cream n’ Chive Potatoes 1 Medium Size Container of Sour Cream 1 Lb. of Your Favorite Cheese; Shredded 1 Small Palmful of Nutmeg & Parsley Salt & Pepper to Taste 1 Stick of Real Butter; melted Place all in a large bowl and mix thuroughly. Finish up with the remainder put cheese all over final layer. Cover with alum. foil at 350 so cheese melts but doesn’t burn. Cook for 20 minutes until hot throughout and in the center. Remove foil for last 10 minutes to get golden brown. So creamy, flavorful and super simple! MANDARIN GINGER UPSIDE DOWN CAKE 1 Box of plain Spice Cake or Vanilla Cake, your choice. Follow directions to prepare, but to it, add: *if choose Vanilla add 2 tsps. Allspice. 2 tsps. Cinnamon, 2 tsps. Ginger, 2 tsps. Nutmeg 1/2 tsp. 2014 AMA Motorcyclists of the Year:
Bryan Carroll and James Walker
PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The American Motorcyclist Association announced today the 2014 AMA Motorcyclists of the Year: AMA members Bryan Carroll and James Walker. Carroll and Walker directed and produced “Why We Ride,” a documentary that promotes modern motorcycling across every discipline and is spearheading a new era of creativity in filmmaking about the sport. The AMA Motorcyclist of the Year Award recognizes the \ person or persons who had the most profound impact within the motorcycling community in the previous 12 months. The AMA Board of Directors bestows the award annually. “Bryan Carroll and James Walker have produced what is arguably the most compelling demonstration for why we ride, short of physically experiencing riding itself,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. “Their mission was to promote motorcycling to riders and non-riders alike. A year after its debut, their film has become one of the best advertisements for motorcycling available anywhere.” Producer/director Carroll and producer Walker created a film that is one of motorcycling’s great testimonials -- a feature-length documentary about why we “dream, discover and explore” on two wheels. Their effort came at an opportune time for motorcycling, reminding riders about their passion and promoting riding to others when motorcycle sales were at some of their lowest levels in decades. “With the motorcycle industry still reeling from the ill effects
of the worst economy since the Great Depression, ‘Why We Ride’ provided a much-needed boost in terms of the promotion of motorcycling and the motorcycle lifestyle,” Dingman said. “For their tireless and professional effort to create a great film, for their selfless dedication to promoting motorcycling, for their personal love of riding, and for the riders new and old who have gotten behind the handlebars after watching ‘Why We Ride,’ it’s our pleasure to recognize Bryan Carroll and James Walker as the 2014 AMA Motorcyclists of the Year,” Dingman said. A full account of Carroll and Walker’s creation of “Why We Ride,” as well as their personal stories about motorcycling, can be found in the January issue of American Motorcyclist, the official journal of the AMA. About the American Motorcyclist Association Founded in 1924, the AMA is a not-for-profit member-based association whose mission is to promote the motorcycle lifestyle and protect the future of motorcycling. As the world’s largest motorcycling rights and event sanctioning organization, the AMA advocates for riders’ interests at all levels of government and sanctions thousands of competition and recreational events every year. The AMA also provides money-saving discounts on products and services for its members. Through the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in Pickerington, Ohio, the AMA honors the heroes and heritage of motorcycling. For more information, visit www. americanmotorcyclist.com.

Air soft pistol … “Even an inexpensive model looks a lot like the real thing.”
Air soft guns have been trendy for a number of years now, but lately they seem to be getting more attention than they had in the past. They have a number of uses, from being fun for kids, to using them for various training techniques and classes for adults. You can buy an airsoft gun as inexpensive as thirty dollars from your local grocery store in the toy department, or you can buy one that is a replica of a popular firearm, designed to look and feel like the real thing, for several hundred dollars. Regardless of the model, the most important part of an air soft gun is the orange tip. The orange tip on an air soft gun makes it clear to anyone at a distance that you have a toy – not a real firearm. NEVER remove the orange tip, and make sure your children know how important it is. From a distance, even the cheap air soft guns look very much like real firearms. In the days of polymer plastics, real guns come in a variety of frame colors, and many of your toy guns come in simple black. There is no way of knowing whether the gun someone is holding is real or not without a close visual inspection, and manufacturers of air soft guns place the orange tip on the toy, so that there is not any confusion. Without the orange tip, results can be deadly, and more than one tragic story has hit the news in recent times affirming this. It cannot be stressed enough – teaching children about real firearms, and teaching them the proper ways to handle even an air soft gun, can be lifesaving tools. Most of the tech-

“Never remove or color over the orange tip!”
niques of firearms training carry over to air soft pistols, which is why they can be valuable training devices for adults, as well. With that in mind, most adults readily understand the repercussions of a toy that looks like a real gun, but children will not understand unless they are taught, both about air soft guns, and their very real counterparts. If you are giving your child an air soft gun, they need to understand the same basic elements of firearm safety that they would need were they handling a pellet gun, a .22 caliber pistol, or any other firearm. Teach them how to respond to authority, as well as non-law enforcement adults, while they are handling their air soft gun. If they are older, and they will be playing with their air soft gun without close adult supervision, be sure they know how to behave in a serious situation. If you are uncomfortable teaching your child basic firearms knowledge and safety, but they own an air soft pistol, take them to a local sportsman’s club. They will offer youth hunter’s safety courses, and they also have volunteers who offer their time for the education of youth. Local gun shops may also be a valuable resource, as many have instructors who would be willing to teach basic firearm safety to children with a parent present. Sometimes there are fees for this sort of instruction, but ultimately, you have to ask yourself, “How much is your life worth?” and in this case, “How much is your child’s life worth?” My goal as an instructor is to arm with knowledge, so that each person has the tool set necessary to make their own choices about their life and to avoid unnecessary tragedy. Please, do the same for your children!

THUNDER ROADS TENNESSEE is proud to announce, this spring, we will be introducing a state-wide, summer long riding challenge hitting great destinations and events across the state.
The 2015 Tennessee Thunder Run! It’s a riding contest unlike any you have ever seen, and features great prizes every month!
14
ThunderRoadsTennessee.com
January 2015
STATE AND STOP PRIZES
Every month the Thunder Roads Tennessee staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop, and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of April. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!
THE WINNERS
HOW IT WORKS
Each month, Thunder Roads Tennessee will announce a list of Tennessee Thunder Run Ride Stops. These stops are selected based on recommendations of our readers, and confirmed by our editors. Some of the Ride Stops, will be designated Registration stops. Riders can stop by any registration stop and pick up a card, register it so we can contact winners and you are ready to go. You only have to give your contact info once when you register your card, then you can go to any ride stop location in the state and “check in” just by presenting your card at each location. Once a rider has “checked-in” at a stop – their card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads Tennessee will also randomly select rider check-ins from across the state for special prizes and incentives. Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads Tennessee and our sponsors and will include some very exciting prizes. They may include riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, and many others. This is a contest about riding. The beauty, and simplicity of the program is that anyone can win, with any check-in, but your chances of winning increase the more you ride! The dedicated rider, crisscrossing the state has a greater chance of winning, but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the drawing for that Ride Stop, and also the state wide drawings each month, so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride, the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea, to encourage everyone to get out and ride! January 2015
If your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads Tennessee will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning a Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending the particular Rally. If that rider isn’t able to take advantage of that prize – they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead. • Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in. • Some prize drawings are specific to only check-ins for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from checkin’s season long. • ALL CHECK-INS remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (MondaySunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses).
BONUS CHECK-INS!
The 2015 Tennessee Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accommodate riders or particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads Tennessee as part of the Stop Listing.
IT’S REALLY THAT SIMPLE!
1. Get your Thunder Roads Tennessee “Ride n’ Win” Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Tennessee Magazine, our website (ThunderRoadsTennessee.com), or our Facebook page 3. Ride out to the listed stops and show them your card. 4. And then you could win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Tennessee Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards. Thunder Roads Tennessee will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Smoky Mountain Thunder Run, or Bike Nights will have special booth
ThunderRoadsTennessee.com
15
for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering their cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards. Thunder Roads Tennessee will also be working with charities and various nonprofit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events. The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Tennessee Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads Tennessee will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your Tennessee RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the TTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and 16
cool destinations all across the state. This is not simply a “Chinese fire drill” or mad-dash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state. One of the really exciting aspects of the program is that the Tennessee Thunder Run can be modified and added to throughout the summer – if not the entire year. We will be adding and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, we’ll investigate them, and if we agree that it’s a suitable stop – they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops will only run a few months – and possibly not consecutive. A cool winery on the Cumberland Plateau might be a stop early in the season, and then we bring them back during the harvest season! We can also modify the run if it turns out that something just isn’t working. We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. As with the magazine itself, the Tennessee Thunder Run is presented through the support of our sponsors and partners

shelters), or other specific areas. For more information on sponsorship, please email us at TennesseeThunderRun@gmail.com Of course one of the key components in this whole program, second only to the riders themselves, is the stops. The Thunder Roads Tennessee team has spent a lot of time collecting nominations and researching stops for the Run; but there are undoubtedly plenty of more stops out there. If you have a venue or event that you would like to get involved in the run, please don’t hesitate to let us know about it. If it’s your place, we will get in touch shortly with more information on the run and what’s involved. If you are recommending a spot for someone else – we will reach out to them and let them know they have been nominated. If you can suggest a contact person, that can help expedite the process. You can send information to TennesseeThunderRun@gmail.com The 2015 Tennessee Thunder Run will begin in April, with all necessary information and additional details in each month’s issue of Thunder Roads Tennessee. We will also have a complete listing on our website – ThunderRoadsTennessee. com and our Facebook pages. We will include a listing of registration stops – including a wide variety of events in April; including Bike Nights, Bike Blessings, and rides. The RIDE kicks off in April! As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at TennesseeThunderRun@gmail.com
all across the state. We have secured several key sponsorships already, but opportunities remain. If your business would like to get involved, this is a great way to promote yourself all across the state in a positive manner. Even if your organization is not a riding destination you might become a sponsor for the tremendous promotional value it offers through the constant media attention it will receive. Obviously this will be a heavy focus within the magazine but we are also working with radio and other media outlets to help spread awareness of the run. Sponsors are able to tap into this network and enjoy great exposure. We also have a number of unique opportunities for branding - including being featured on contest motorcycles, jackets, shirts, and other opportunities. Annual Mule Town Marine Corp Toy Run
O
By: Rebel Ron
n November 22 riders met at the 41 year old S & G Custom Cycles in Columbia to join the Mule Town Detachment of the Marine Corps League for their annual Toys For Tots Ride. Charlie Morton & his Marines greeted people this chilly morning with smiles & hot coffee in the showroom. Riders were then invited to look at the vintage bikes on display, unique & funny items along with the cool display to honor the troops who served in Vietnam. The display features dozens of items, weapons, photos, captured flags, & more, that belonged to Tennessee soldiers during that conflict. After loading up all the toys in a truck & car the riders took off for a scenic ride west to the small community of Hampshire, Tenn. to enjoy a wine tasting at the Keg Springs Winery. The staff there were pretty amazing, accommodating, & very informative as well. They served us numerous types of wine they make along with snacks & more. We were particularly impressed how they explained the various wine making processes & their pride in using Tenn., workers & 22
products. Hampshire is a beautiful farming community that looks unchanged despite having three wineries now. I love a shirt they sell that says, “Hampshire, Tennessee where there are more wineries than stop lights!” We soon rolled out of Hampshire & meandered through the back roads of Lewis County in much improved weather with sun shine & warmer temps. We then got on the Natchez Trace for a ride north towards Columbia along the beautiful fall colored tree lined roads to the Veterans Of Foreign Wars post on Hwy 50 where we were treated to a free lunch. There was a silent auction of some neat items & we met many great men & ladies who have served our nation from WW II, Korea, Vietnam, & current conflicts in the Middle East. We all want to thank you all for your service to our country!!!!! Despite the chilly weather that morning we still had a good turnout & raised over a $1,000 & about 150 toys for needy children which will double after the Marine Corps matches our local donations. It was a good day to ride the back roads of Tenn. help some kids, & meet some veterans who have stood for Freedom around the world! Semper Fi!!! See y’all next year!!!

Written by Thunder Roads Reader, Stoney It is often said that experience is the best teacher. I have recently experienced cold weather riding. From my perspective it was a test of wills and nature proved to have the stronger will. In my opinion, I was dressed appropriately for the ride. I wore: Layered clothing under my leather jacket (I don’t have electric heated riding apparel). Rain suit pants (added lower-body protection from the wind). A full-face helmet. A fleece neck protector. Insulated leather riding gloves. Even with all that protection, I still felt the effects of the cold temperatures on my feet, toes, fingers, and legs. Cruising at highway speed(s) of 65 to 75 mph; the wind-chill factor becomes a real force to be dealt with. The wind, at any speed, moving across the body will rob body heat quite rapidly even when there is very little exposed skin. That fact brings hypothermia into the “mix” of things to be aware of. Hypothermia comes on slowly and sometimes without the rider being aware of it until the dangerous effects start affecting coordination, speech, attention, and reaction time. Fortunately for me, I remembered what to be aware of as far as the signs of hypothermia setting in. Another concern is frostbite. The fingers and toes are at risk, even when they are covered. Anything that affects blood circulation, like movement restricting gloves, socks, and boots, can make frostbite a real hazard to your health if it goes untreated and/or ignored. Again, being aware of what the body is telling you can save your life and/or avoid permanent physical damage. Taking warm-up breaks along with re-fueling stops can be a very important safety factor when riding in cold weather. Performing a pre-ride inspection will reduce the likelihood of a break-down along the way. Being stranded on the side of the road in cold weather could be life threatening if the conditions are not in your favor. I have adopted the practice of performing a pre-ride inspection for my own safety. It’s also a matter of respect and concern for my fellow riders. Yet another factor is fatigue. Fatigue is as much of a health and safety issue in cold weather as it is hot weather. I began feeling the effects of fatigue on the return trip. “I just want to get home and warm up” was a constant thought. Things like that take away some of your concentration from the task at hand. Not a good thing! That is when accidents happen. Taking a rest-stop might prove to be beneficial to safely completing the trip. An added consideration would be to have a snack and something to drink. It’ll give you a chance to mentally “pull it together” before you get back on the road. I did not write or intend this article to scare and/or deter anybody away from riding in cold weather or any other weather as far as that goes. Hey, any day can be a good day to get out on two-wheels… if it is done safely. Nobody, that I am aware of, buys a Harley to look at. It was made to ride! Anyway, speaking from experience… having a healthy respect for the forces of nature is a very good practice if you want to “live to ride” again!

Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: Last year on August 9, 2014, I was riding back from Sturgis with my long time riding buddies. We left out of Lincoln, Nebraska just before first light. Our plan was to get as close to Nashville as possible. After a week of long days and short nights in the land of big sky we were not really in fighting shape but on the flip side we’re not a bunch to give up easily. It was a gas and go day. Instead of heading down I-29 into Kansas City and taking I-70 across Missouri we got on US-36 in St. Joseph and rode it to Hannibal. Not near as much traffic and the scenery is better. From Hannibal we turned south to St. Louis. It was quite a day. We rode and rode and rode. When we got to Paducah we counseled and everyone was game to take it to the house. The weather wasn’t bad all day. On I-40, about Fort Campbell, we started seeing rain ahead so we stopped and suited up. It was getting later in the day and the heavy clouds were turning out the lights. We had enough gas at that point to make it home and set out in formation. We didn’t go far and it started raining cats and dogs. I was in the lead and was trying to keep track of the guys behind me and see far enough ahead to keep us clear of other vehicles that might be slowing down. We started getting lightning, thunder and rain in sheets. There really wasn’t anyplace to pull over and we all started losing track of each other in the wheel mist. There was a Saturday night preseason Titans game in Nashville and traffic was heavy. Out of nowhere a clunker backwoods tow truck pulls onto the highway right in front of us. This tow truck had his light bar rolling on top but he had really bright white lights flashing instead of yellow and they blinded the crap out of us in the middle of this dark down pour. Yee haw – nothing like a pop quiz in a rain storm! He was going about 20 miles an hour below what everyone else was doing but we couldn’t go around because of all the cars in the fast lane. I started drifting and didn’t know it because you couldn’t see the road stripes for the bright lights on that truck. A driver going by me honked at me just before I took the paint off his fender. I lost track of the
January 2015
other bikes behind me until I saw one of the guys from the back go flying by. He made a good decision to lose the crazy train. He was far enough back he could see a slot coming, jumped in it, waved as he went by and headed home. By that point we were pretty scattered and had lost track of each other except for one buddy who managed to hang on my tail. We finally got around the jackass in the tow truck and made sure we gave him a proper salute. After we got around him we could see the road lines and actually hit a few places where the rain lightened up a little. What a relief it was to get that tow truck behind us. When I got home and got the bike in the garage I checked the mileage. We had run 817 miles. All the way from Lincoln to Nashville! I went to the kitchen, got a big welcome home and fixed a little something to wash down the trail dust. The next day the news was glued to events in Ferguson, Missouri. A couple of the guys put two and two together and we had rolled through St. Louis just about the time the bullets started flying. Was it our loud pipes that got everyone agitated? Could it have been jealousy over us having a great time out west? Who knows and that’s my point. When you get up in the morning you never really know what your day will hold. You could hit the lottery, get hit by a car or roll through a riot. One thing is for sure, reality follows our every step. That situation on the road was real and I couldn’t change it by just saying it wasn’t so or making up a story to explain why I wasn’t responsible for my being on a crowded highway after dark, behind blinding lights in a driving rain storm at the end of a long day. I didn’t rob a store or punch a cop but I did climb on my bike and ride down the highway into that storm. Actions have consequences and if I wasn’t ready to accept the consequences I shouldn’t have gotten on the bike. There may be a moral here. Reality might look like a cop with a black eye or a thunderstorm between you and your destination. Good decisions about real situations can make a big difference to your future. Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those can’t. A hillbilly went hunting one day in West Virginia and bagged three ducks. He put them in the bed of his pickup truck and was about to drive home where he was confronted by an ornery game warden who didn’t like hillbillies. The Game Warden ordered to the hillbilly to show his hunting license, and the hillbilly pulled out a valid West Virginia hunting license. The game warden looked at the license, then reached over and picked up one of the ducks, sniffed its butt, and said, “This duck ain’t from West Virginia . This is a Kentucky duck. You got a Kentucky huntin’ license, boy?” The hillbilly reached into his wallet and produced a Kentucky hunting license. The Game Warden looked at it, then reached over and grabbed the second duck, sniffed its butt, and said, “This ain’t no Kentucky duck. This duck’s from Tennessee. You got a Tennessee license?” The hillbilly reached into his wallet and produced an Tennessee license. The warden then reached over and picked up the third duck, sniffed its butt, and said This ain’t no Tennessee duck. This here duck’s from Virginia. You got a Virginia huntin’ license?” Again the hillbilly reached into his wallet and brought out a Virginia. hunting license. The game warden was extremely frustrated at this point, and he yelled at the hillbilly “Just where the hell are you from? “The hillbilly turned around, bent over, dropped his pants & undies for the full on moon effect and said, “Why don’t you tell me? You appear to be the damn expert here!”. _______________________________________________ A man in a Florida supermarket tried to buy half a head of lettuce. The very young produce assistant told him that they sell only whole heads of lettuce. The man persisted and asked to see the Manager. The boy said he’d ask his manager about it. Walking into the back room, the boy said to his manager: ‘Some butt-wipe wants to buy half a head of lettuce.’ As he fi nished his sentence, he turned to find the man standing right behind him, so he added, ‘And this gentleman has kindly offered to buy the other half.’ The Manager approved the deal, and the man went on his way. Later the Manager said to the boy, ‘I was impressed with the way you got yourself out of that situation earlier. We like people who think on their feet here. Where are you from, son?’ ‘Canada, sir,’ the boy replied. ‘Well, why did you leave Canada?’ the manager asked. The boy said, ‘Ah, as far as I’m concerned, there’s nothing but whores and hockey players up there.’ ‘Really?’ said the manager. ‘My wife is from Canada.’ ‘No chit?’ replied the boy, not missing a beat; 28
‘Who’d she play for, sir? The Pastor asked if anyone in the congregation would like to express praise for answered prayers. Suzie Smith stood and walked to the podium. She said, “I have a praise; two months ago, my husband, Phil, had a terrible bicycle wreck and his scrotum was completely crushed. The pain was excruciating and the doctors didn’t know if they could help him.” You could hear a muffled gasp from the men in the congregation as they imagine the pain that poor Phil must have experienced. “Phil was unable to hold me or the children,” she went on, “and every move caused him terrible pain. We prayed as the doctors performed a delicate operation, and it turned out they were able to piece together the crushed remnants of Phil’s scrotum, and wrap wire around it to hold it in place.” Again, the men in the congregation cringed and squirmed uncomfortably as they imagined the horrible surgery performed on Phil. “Now,” she announced in a quivering voice, “thank the Lord, Phil is out of the hospital and the doctors say that with time, his scrotum should recover completely.” All the men sighed with unified relief. The pastor rose and tentatively asked if anyone else had something to say. _______________________________________________ You’re Probably An EXTREME Redneck If ....... NEWS BYTES
NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) WASHINGTON TARGETS DISTRACTED DRIVING IN MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS VIDEO The Washington State Motorcycle Safety Program recently released a new motorcycle awareness video targeting inattentive drivers. Created with teen driver education students in mind, the eight-minute-long film starts by showing a teen driver cruising the streets in a car while eating and listening to loud music. When he turns left into the path of an oncoming motorcyclist, time stops, giving both the driver and rider a chance to exit their vehicles and talk to each another. After some initial frustration, Randy the motorcyclist gets in the car with Ian, the teen driver, and teaches him the dos and don’ts of how to drive when sharing the road with motorcyclists. Randy’s lessons include looking twice before turning and giving motorcycles more space. The two eventually return to their vehicles and the inevitable crash takes place. “The video is meant to be a relevant and easily accessible tool for Driver Training providers to use as they fulfill the motorcycle awareness requirement of their curriculum,” states the Washington State Department of Licensing, adding that the WMSP is supported by motorcycle endorsement fees and is tasked with providing Public Awareness of motorcycle safety, Motorcycle Safety education programs including classroom and on-cycle training, and Improved operator testing. The YouTube video “Motorcycle Awareness - A Second Look” has already been viewed over 100,000 times in the first three weeks (www.youtube.com/watch?v=_b3T7u4ZJ1Y#t=19).
TENNESSEE BANS BIG RIGS FROM DRAGON A mountainous stretch of U.S. Route 129 (SR 115) from Tennessee to North Carolina famously known as “The Dragon” boasts 318 curves in 11.19 miles and is a beacon for drivers and riders alike, but semis are no longer welcome! Due to a “critical number of traffic accidents involving large trucks,” the state of Tennessee is following the lead of neighboring North Carolina in banning big rigs from US 129, on sections of highway known as Deals Gap or The Tail of the Dragon. For years, navigation systems have pointed truckers to the Dragon as a shortcut across Blount County. That ends with the new year, and signs will be posted mid-January prohibiting commercial vehicles (longer than 30 feet). After conducting a safety review, according to the Tennessee DOT there were a total of 204 crashes from 2010 to 2012 in Blount County -- six of those resulted in fatalities. Only one of those fatal accidents involved a tractor trailer, but many of the other incidents with semis have blocked the narrow highway for hours and prevented travel for all motorists. 32
NEW MEXICO HELMET STICKER PROPOSAL OPPOSED In response to a Senate bill draft creating a sticker riders would have to pay for in order to exercise their freedom of choice in helmet use, the New Mexico Motorcycle Rights Organization (NMMRO) has authored a letter of opposition supported by the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) and the NCOM Legislative Task Force (NCOM-LTF), among others, it states: Dr. Kurt B. Nolte, M.D., Office of the Medical Investigator; “It has recently come to the attention of the New Mexico Motorcyclists Rights Organization (NMMRO) that a bill was drafted on your behalf by Clifford Rees at the New Mexico Legislature. If passed this bill would impose a $692 fee on motorcyclists who chose to ride without a helmet. As an organization we are interested in hearing your justification for placing this burden on the public and if you think that placing helmets on motorcyclists would decrease the number of motorcycle crashes. Our organization would be pleased to share government statistics with you which show that 58% of all motorcyclist deaths are experienced by riders wearing helmets. We would also like to point out that it has been proven that accident prevention has a much bigger impact on preventing motorcycle injuries and fatalities. Helmets have not been shown to prevent motorcycle accidents and in some cases can increase the chances of an accident occurring. We have also worked with the New Mexico Department of Transportation to try to improve the awareness of drivers on New Mexico’s roads in respect to motorcycles as another method of accident prevention. If in fact you do intend to proceed with your present actions we would like to spend some time with you looking into what affect this would have on the motorcycle riders of New Mexico and not just assume that it would be beneficial to their safety. The NMMRO and NM State Representative Rick Miera (a long-serving member of the NCOM-LTF) are available to meet with you to discuss this issue further.” Thank you for listening to our concerns on this subject, Annette Torrez, Chairperson NMMRO (and member of the NCOM Board of Directors)
LANE-SPLITTING LEGISLATION PROPOSED IN CALIFORNIA From across Europe to throughout Asia, motorcyclists around the world routinely “filter” their way between lanes of slowmoving cars, but here in the U.S. only riders in California are allowed to “lane-split” through congested traffic -- not-somuch because it’s legal, but because there are no specific laws addressing the issue. That may soon change, as Assemblyman Bill Quirk (D-Hayward) has introduced Assembly Bill No.51 to specifically regulate the practice. According to ABATE of California, their lobbyist Jim Lombardo has contacted the author’s legislative staff who said the measure was introduced by their office because of the widespread newspaper and television coverage

regarding lane splitting and the general public’s ignorance of the legality of the issue. The staff members are willing to accept amendments to improve the bill language but are seeking to “codify”, or write into California law, lane splitting legislation to ensure it is not completely outlawed after the CHP (California Highway Patrol) was forced to remove their “lane splitting guidelines” last summer. AB 51 seeks to amend Section 21658 of the California Vehicle Code to “authorize a motorcycle to be driven between rows of stopped or moving vehicles in the same lane if the speed of traffic is 35 miles per hour or less and the motorcycle is driven no more than 10 miles per hour faster than the speed of traffic.” A violation of the Vehicle Code is a crime, so the bill would create a new criminal penalty. In addition to general opposition to over-regulating an accepted practice, “Obviously this bill is not something ABATE can endorse, especially when it limits lane splitting to traffic speeds of 35 MPH or less,” said Dave Hastings, ABATE Executive Director. “We will implement a plan of action to kill this bill or at least amend it into something that the riders of California can live with.”

WHEN GAS PRICES GO UP, SO DO MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS A new study suggests that as gas prices rose in recent years, so did motorcyclist injuries and fatalities, because more people start using motorcycles and many of those riders are inexperienced, the researchers explained. The analysis, published in the journal for Injury Prevention, revealed a strong association between rising gas prices and an increasing number of motorcycle registrations, along with motorcyclist injuries and deaths. But it did not prove a cause-and-effect link. Analysts examined data gathered between 2002 and 2011 in California, which has the highest number of motorcycle registrations in the United States and the third highest number of motorcyclist deaths, and extrapolated that higher gas prices resulted in an additional 800 deaths and January 2015
10,290 injuries among motorcyclists in California11/1/11 over 5:06 thePM ten year period. According to the report, crashes were more likely to occur in urban areas and during the afternoon. Of the motorcyclists involved in crashes, nearly 93% were men, 46% were middle-aged, 68% were caucasion, and 20% were uninsured. Riders ages 16 to 24 and those on the latest models of motorcycles were most likely to be involved in at-fault crashes. WEIRD NEWS: NEW ZEALAND COUPLE FINED $40K FOR RIDING WITHOUT HELMET A couple in New Zealand have been fined $20,000 each following multiple instances of riding a quad bike without a helmet. According to the New Zealand Herald, Phillip Andrew Jones and Maria Anna Carlson, share-milkers from Marlborough, had been seen riding their All-Terrain Vehicle without helmets multiple times dating back to 2012. The pair were both fined under the Health and Safety in Employment Act; Jones was charged with failing to take all practicable steps to ensure no other person was harmed at work while riding a quad bike, and Carlson with failing to take all practicable steps to ensure her own safety by wearing a helmet, and the safety of others by not carrying her children on a quad bike. “Quad bikes pose a serious risk on farms, and on average five people were killed and 850 were injured every year,” said WorkSafe spokesman Francois Barton, adding that Carlson was twice witnessed riding her quad bike without a helmet after a prohibition notice had been issued and the second time she had two young children with her on the bike. Carlson admitted that despite owning helmets she didn’t wear one because “it becomes just a little bit of a hassle.” QUOTABLE QUOTE: “You don’t always win your battles, but it’s good to know you fought.” ~ Lauren Bacall (1924-2014), iconic American actress

Our major goals are to modify existing laws that are detrimental to motorcycle safety and enjoyment, and to enact new legislation in support of motorcyclists who ride in Tennessee.
