Tonight, as I sit here and write this letter, it was an unseasonably 72 degrees and sunny Sunday, a perfect day for a ride! And according to the forecast for next week (the last full week of February) the warmer temps will continue. I think we have just skipped winter making riding season longer this year than in recent years. I would like to address the serious issue of motorcycle safety. There are far too many riders dying for no good reason. Please pay attention riders because it isn’t just your life. You have friends and family who would like to keep you around as long as possible. Here are the rules we live by: 1) Ride like everyone out there is trying to kill you. Some days this isn’t far from the truth. You don’t have a protective metal cage around you. Stop pretending you do and start paying attention to your surroundings. We strongly suggest a rider safety class, even if you’ve already taken one and no matter how long you have been riding. 2) If you are on a motorcycle and you get into a collision with almost anything, you will usually lose. Pay attention! 3) Live by the front brake, die by the rear. Ever wonder why there are usually two big disc brakes on the front wheel and only one smaller one on the rear? That is because roughly 70 percent of your stopping power is on the front. This means if you don’t have linked brakes and/or ABS and you only use the rear, it is going to take at least 70 percent more distance to stop. It’s your life. Learn to use the front brake and to use both together. Never use only the rear in a panic situation! Once the rear wheel is locked up, you are in trouble. Let it off too soon in a slide and you will be pitched down the road like a rag doll. Learn to use the front brake and use both! 4) Wear protective riding gear. Your skin and scalp are no match for pavement. We don’t want to force our helmet views on anyone, but we always wear our helmets. If this saves one life we will be happy. We have ridden over 100,000 miles and we have lost a collision with a deer, a buzzard, and diesel fuel. We have been lucky sometimes but we have learned how to get the most out of our riding. Be safe. Have fun. Enjoy riding. Happy St Patrick’s Day… May you always have walls for the winds, a roof for the rain, tea beside the fire, laughter to cheer you, those you love near you, and all your heart might desire! “Speak To the Rock” Ex.17:1-6 “…and there was no water for the people to drink. Wherefore the people did chide with Moses. And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses.” So Moses went before the Lord and God gave him specific instructions; “Take the Rod, wherewith thou smote the Red Sea with…thou shall smite the rock, and water shall come out of it.” First we must acknowledge this typology; • The Rock was a type of Christ • Smiting the Rock was a type of the crucifixion • The water represented life God is bringing His people out of a “slave mentality” into a “Sonship mentality.” Years later, God’s people ran into this same problem again but in a different location. Numbers 20:2-13 “And there was no water for the congregation; and they gathered themselves against Moses and Aaron. And the people chode (strife) with Moses…” So once again Moses goes before the Lord and again God gives him specific instructions; “Take the Rod…and SPEAK to the Rock, and it shall give forth its water.” But Moses does what he wants to do and “Speaks to the people and smites the Rock.” Moses had given everything up for God’s people, even put his own life on the line for them, but they never really accepted Mosses as one of them, because he was raised in Pharaoh’s house. Moses was mad at his congregation and speaks to them; “Hear now ye rebels; must we fetch water out of this rock? And Moses lifted up his hand, and with the Rod he SMOTE the Rock twice.” The first time God told him to take the “Rod and smite the Red Sea” to divide the “water.” The second time God told him to “SMITE the rock and the water came forth.” But this time God told him to “take the Rod and SPEAK to the Rock.” The first “striking of the Rock” represented the crucifixion, the transformation from slaves to Sonship, after the crucifixion of Crist we have become Sons of God. We merely just have to “SPEAK to the Rock.” Moses was frustrated, angry with his congregation,
March 2017
he had put up with their backbiting, murmuring attitude from their parents and now this generation as well. God deals with Moses for his disobedience. “Because ye believe me not…ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.” Just because God told you to do something in the past, doesn’t mean it will work the same in the future. Today we should “Speak to the Rock and feed the people.” We must stop adding to God’s Word what we think it should say and our opinions, or what our religion thinks over what God’s word says. Stop hanging on to “The traditions of men that make the Word of God of no effect,” and hear a fresh Word from God for today. Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

THE BIKER WAVE
f you check out the cover this month it’s a really cool shot of some bikes rolling down the road taken from the back of a moving SUV by our friend Ed Monroe. The lead rider in the group is giving the classic “Biker Wave” so we thought we’d try to give some insight into the time honored ritual. Why do we wave? I’ve never really thought about it until now, but I guess recently I’ve come to see it as a greeting between 2 people that enjoy doing the same thing, kindred spirits. Most of the time the other rider waves back, sometimes not, I don’t take it personally and if you pass me and I for some reason don’t wave I hope you don’t either. I don’t recall anyone ever telling me about the wave. I’m sure I had seen it done a few times, but when I first started riding on the street in the 80’s, everyone I passed on the same brand bike I was on waved at me so I waved back and I quickly learned the left handed peace sign down wave common amongst V-Twin riders, some even say the peace sign is actually a V for V-Twin, again I think that’s one of those things that nobody really knows, but I still mostly use it to this day. For a long time I was a brand specific waver, I only acknowledged people riding the same brand bike I was on, but over time, as I met more people who rode different brands I learned that we all share the same passion for riding, we simply choose different bikes for whatever reason. Personally, I now wave at almost anyone on 2 or even 3 wheels if I see them, it’s become reflex and I don’t really even think that much about it. There are many versions of the story of how the wave started, one is it was started in 1904 when Harley-Davidson partners Arthur Davidson and William Harley passed each other and waved. Someone saw them do it and believed it to be etiquette among riders. Another version is it began when returning soldiers bought motorcycles and used it as a show of respect for fellow veterans. That wave may have been a raised fist and there are a few more variations of the origins of the wave floating around but does anyone really know? However it started, most of us do it, and all of us have seen it. While there are no real rules about who you wave at or even if you wave or return the wave, some people put a lot more thought into it than I. There are a few riders who won’t wave at all, and that’s their prerogative, there are some who won’t wave first but will return the wave. Some waves are brand or style specific, V-Twin riders not waving at sport bikes comes to mind, and some will only wave if they recognize you as an equal. It really comes down to your choice, but there are some specific situations when it’s not a good idea to wave. One that comes

to mind is riding through an intersection, intersections are dangerous for all of us and we should all be paying full attention when we pass through them. Another time it’s not a good idea to wave is when you are at a rally or a big event, when there are so many motorcycles your left hand would almost never be where it really belongs, on the bars. Another time you probably shouldn’t wave is when you are riding hard, such as on very twisty roads or on the interstate, both situations it’s better to have both hands on the bars. So I guess what it all boils down to is, like everything else it’s a personal choice, wave if you want at who you want and if you don’t wave or get a wave back, no big deal, we’re both still riding a motorcycle.

EASYRIDERS BIKE SHOW – NASHVILLE On January 28, Easyriders Magazine rolled in to the Music City Center, with their annual bike show tour. Again this year, the bikes and crowds were great. In addition to the bikes, there was music by The Royal Hounds Band and The Fryed Brothers Band. Announcer Lisa Ligon and the Purrfect Angelz dancers performed throughout the day. The NTC Drift Trykes performed drifts on what looked, to many, to be oversized, motorized big wheels. There were lots of vendors present, including Boswell’s Harley-Davidson, local sponsor, and biker groups, including Pastor Ron’s Covenant Confirmers, Bikers Who Care, Bikers Against Child Abuse, Special Forces, Christian Motorcyclists Assoc., Outlaws MC, and I’m sure I missed some. Michael Ballard of Full Throttle Saloon, Paul Yaffe’s Bagger Nation, and Dave Mann Original Artwork also had displays. Other vendors promoted everything from insurance and legal services to Trump merchandise. Of course, Scott and Denise manned the Thunder Roads Magazine Booth. The following awards were presented.

Bullet Points
PRINCIPLES OF A SELF DEFENSE CLAIM – INNOCENCE Hello fellow bikers. Last month’s Bullet Points column dealt with the potential legal jeopardy you may face when the “unimaginable happens.” - You have found yourself in a rapidly escalating altercation and have taken responsibility for your safety – and perhaps your life. In the rapid chaos of the altercation you have used lethal force to protect yourself – or perhaps a friend or family member. Your freedom will inevitably require you to have a legitimate self-defense claim. As I stated in last month’s column, there are five essential questions which need to be answered in the affirmative for your self-defense claim: 1. Innocence 2. Imminence 3. Proportionality 4. Avoidance 5. Reasonableness All five of these components must be in your favor for you to have a legitimate self-defense claim. If they are, you will prevail. If they are not all answered affirmatively, you may spend a very long time in prison. This month we will focus on Innocence. Innocence After the dust settles, you must be viewed as the innocent party. While this may seem easy enough to prove, there are many things which can happen which makes you the aggressor. In an altercation, the aggressor is generally going to be viewed as the person who threw the first punch, brandished a knife or pulled a gun. In some states, words alone can cause you to be the aggressor. Tennessee’s law is a bit vague with regards to who the aggressor is: Tennessee 39-11-611 (e) The threat of force against another is not justified: 1. If the person using force consented to the exact force used or attempted by the other individual; 2. If the person using force provoked the other individual’s use or attempted use of unlawful force Provocation is the key to Tennessee’s self-defense claim and the fact that Tennessee has not clearly defined provocation, you must CLEARLY be the innocent party – not the provocateur. Additionally, you can easily find yourself in a position where competing narratives of the event may portray you as the aggressor – especially if the witnesses are friends of the thug you were protecting yourself from. If this proves to be the case, an overzealous prosecutor may well pursue charges against you. Proportionality, or the lack thereof, can also cause you to be viewed as the aggressor, not the innocent party. If the thug you are protecting yourself from throws the first punch, but you immediately escalate the encounter by pulling a concealed firearm, you will be in serious jeopardy of losing your innocence – and your claim of self-defense. There are a few other actions which may cause you to lose your claim of innocence: Pursuit/Sustainment – If you pursue or sustain the altercation you will no longer be considered the innocent party. In other words, if
March 2017
the thug decides fighting you is not in his best interest, and verbally communicates he is disengaging, and you try to sustain or further pursue him, you will become the aggressor. Mutual Combat – If after a brush up with the aforementioned thug, you agree to take the fight outside, you will have lost your innocence – and perhaps sunk your entire self-defense claim. Escalation – This was mentioned earlier, and should be reinforced. If you find yourself in a fist fight, or a war of words, do not escalate the encounter beyond what it is – a nonlethal fight. If you pull your pistol at this point, you will be considered the aggressor or provocateur – meaning you are in serious legal trouble. If you find yourself in a position where you may have lost your innocence in the altercation, you may still be able to regain your innocence. Tennessee 39-11-611(e)(2) unless… A. The person using force abandons the encounter or clearly communicates to the other the intent to do so; and B. The other person nonetheless continues or attempts to use unlawful force against the person The Tennessee statue is clear here. You must attempt to disengage from the altercation and most importantly, you should verbally communicate (preferably loud enough to be heard by everyone nearby) your desire to end the affray. At this point, if the thug pursues the fight – or escalates it – you may well regain your innocence. One other consideration you must keep in mind. Being under the influence of alcohol or drugs will sink a self-defense claim. If you are planning on enjoying some adult beverages, leave your gun at home – or locked up where you cannot gain access to it. If you are under the influence and find yourself in a life-or-death situation, your best defense is not going on the offense. If you pull your sidearm under these conditions – even if you are innocent – you are in serious legal jeopardy. If you have your weapon you must make the choice between potential death and a very long incarceration. But you risk much if you put yourself in this situation. As you can well see, innocence is something which can be lost very easily in a self-defense claim. Tennessee statues are somewhat vague with regards to which party is the aggressor. You must be viewed as the innocent party or you risk a very long and expensive legal fight – a fight which may be for your freedom. And, if by unfortunate circumstances you have lost your claim of innocence, you must actively communicate and disengage from the fight to potentially regain your claim of innocence. Next month, we will focus on the second component of a self-defense claim: Imminence. Stay tuned, and until then, keep the shiny side up. Molon Labe, Mike Noirot Note: I am not a lawyer and nothing in this column represents legal advice. My article is based on common sense and many years of studying self-defense. WILL RIDE TO EAT
by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley
ACME FEED & SEED
J. R. Whitemore built a three-story building on the Cumberland River in 1890. His first tenants were brothers who opened a grocery store. Since then various companies have occupied the building including Southern Soda Works, Continental Baking Powder Co., Ford Flour Co., and D. Byrd and Co. In 1913, it housed the Bearden Buggy Co., and a wooden elevator was added to the building to move buggies up and down. It later housed Sherman Transfer Co., Chadwell Transfer and Storage Co., and the Tennessee Wholesale Drug Co. In 1943, it became the home for Acme Feed and Hatchery, known as Acme Farm Supply in 1965. From 1943 going forward the place was a practical gathering place to get needed farm supplies, get your dog dipped, buy a new set of bib overalls and see who was working Broadway trying to make it big as a country star. After over 6 million dollars in remodeling by Tom Morales, CEO of Tomkats Corporation, the new Acme Feed & Seed opened in August 2014 at 101 Broadway, Nashville TN 37201, Ph# 615-915-0888, Website www. theacmenashville.com. It has quickly become the “IN” spot in the “IN” city of Nashville. The construction kept as much of the historical building as possible which includes wood beams brought to Nashville on river boats by Captain Tom Ryman who was called by God to build a church that is now named the Ryman Auditorium, original home of the Grand Ol’Opry. The Acme building is also where self-rising flour was invented!!
14
In the four-level building the first floor has a radio station. Acme radio is the self-funded, unfiltered lifestyle voice that reflects the real Music City. It gives a platform to artists who don’t necessarily fit the Music Row profile. It showcases all genres of music and broadcasts them worldwide. The rest of this floor is an awesome restaurant with just about anything you might want to eat. When you arrive, you order before being seated! When you sit down your order is served quickly, an amazing feat. The second floor is a large and very comfortable lounge with good views of the city, cushy chairs and couches and the best sushi in town. Drinks are all top shelf as are the tasty brews. The third floor is for large parties and events. The 4th floor roof is great for partying and watching the river, dancing or having a moment to stare deep into that special someone’s eyes. The entertainment week is Grateful Monday (Grateful Dead music), No Country Tuesday, Wednesday is Guthrie Trapp and Friends (studio musician jam) and half priced Mule Kicks, Thursday is Funky Tonk with the Music City Toppers, Friday and Saturday is a variety of great live and recorded music. Wrangler sponsors “Unplugged” on the first Monday of the month. If you’re looking for great entertainment in a fast/casual atmosphere with elevated food. Come to Acme!! Try Rule the Roost. It’s their Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich with green peppercorn aioli, American cheese & pickles on white bread, served with fries. It’s an Acme favorite! You can view their menus on the website. If you are out riding to eat and see me, please come up and tell me your favorite places to go when you’re hungry and thirsty. “Will Ride to Eat” is an ongoing article in Thunder Roads Magazine of Tennessee and we want to put the spotlight on the great history of and variety of Tennessee’s biker friendly establishments.

BIKE OF THE MONTH
2009 Harley-Davidson Softail Deluxe
Congratulations to Amy Lacks on winning our monthly Bike Contest on Facebook!
Coming from a little country out of Ringgold, Virginia, my name is Amy Lacks and I am the owner of this 09 HD Softail Deluxe. I first started riding back in 2013 on a Sportster 1200S and loved that lil bike, until I went to Myrtle Beach in May of 2015 and we bought my husband, Ronald, an 08 Softail Deluxe. He told me, “Amy get on it and ride it up the strip.” I was scared to death because it was so much bigger than what I was used to. I contemplated for a few minutes, then I put on my big girl pants and rode it up the strip and completely feel in love with it. Just knew then, I had to get me one. That was a completely different ride and honestly an easier one, once we got back home, I started looking for me a Deluxe. I found this 09 in Danville, VA and what actually sold me on this bike when I saw it was the sound when it was fired up, LOL!! Loved that loud rumble. The bike was pretty much stock, but since buying it in September 2015, I put beach bars, braided lines, DNA 21” black fat spoked wheel on front and a 16” DNA black fat spoked on rear, alligator seat, chrome swing arm, chrome pulley, under glow lights, LED head lights and passing lamps, and it had Vance and Hines exhaust already on it. I truly enjoy riding with my husband on our Deluxes and along with our friends, whether we take short trips just to ride down to Sheetz and hang out or long rides to certain destinations; it’s a sense of peace and freeing the mind. Special thanks goes out to: Ronald Lacks, Pete Jones, Rick Saunders, and all my friends and family who voted for my bike. Always remember, “Four wheels moves the body but two wheels moves the soul.” If you have a cool custom bike you would like to have featured in our magazine, enter it in our monthly contest by submitting a pic of your bike to ThunderRoadsTn@gmail.com
HISTORY
HISTORIC FEMALE RIDERS PART II
Linda Dugeau Facts: Founder of the Motor Maids, she was inducted to the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2004.
The following is the second in a four-part series showcasing 12 female riders with historic significance. Bessie Stringfield Facts: Founder of the Iron Horse Motorcycle Club, she fought through the barriers of being a black, female motorcycle rider and became an Army motorcycle dispatch rider in WWII. She became an AMA Hall of Fame Member in 2002.
A
s a teenager, Bessie made a name for herself by traveling around the United States on a perpetual quest for adventure. In 1929 she became the first African-American woman to travel across the US alone, on a motorcycle. According to the legend, Bessie started riding as a teen and would flip a coin onto a map of the US and then ride to that point. Truly a free spirit, Bessie even spent time as a stunt rider in regional carnivals and was known for her signature move of standing on the seat of one of the 27 Harley Davidson motorcycles she owned over the years. She is also credited with eight transcontinental rides and is supposed to have ridden through all lower 48 states. This charismatic gal fought through a lot of obstacles along the way including the fact that she was a black woman and she was a woman riding a motorcycle by herself. She toured the deep-south, where racism was prevalent and dangerous for anyone of color, but she deserves credit for doing as she darn well pleased on her mission to share her joy of riding with anyone she came in contact with. Adeline van Buren’s effort from 20-years earlier paid off for Bessie when she managed to become a civilian Army motorcycle dispatch rider in WWII. She even won a flat track race while disguised as a man, of course, she was refused her prize money once she took her helmet off and revealed her true gender, but she had proved her point. Women can really ride. In the 1950s she made Miami her home and continued to ride, tour and enjoy life on two wheels. She also became a nurse and founded the Iron Horse MC Club. In the years that followed she became known as the ‘Motorcycle Queen of Miami’.

Linda starting riding in 1932 and the tales of her riding adventures graced the pages of many of the leading motorcycle publications at the time. Dugeau had a real knack for riding as she used motorcycles to get to and from college, and later as part of her daily commute through the sketchy city streets of Boston. In yet another example of the old six-degrees of separation, she met a fellow female rider who made her aware of the famous 99 Club made up entirely of female pilots (Remember, Gussie van Buren was both a 99 and a woman rider). In 1938, she initiated a campaign to form a women’s motorcycle club. She spent the better part of a decade petitioning females who owned and rode their own motorcycles to join her club until a fortuitous meeting with Dot Robinson helped it all come together. The pair made it their three year-long mission to recruit 50 female riders who owned and rode their own motorcycles. Eventually, the Motor Maids of America was established in 1940 with Dugeau as founder and Robinson serving as club President. The club was awarded it official AMA Charter in 1941, making it the oldest AMA recognized motorcycle club for women in the USA. The Motor Maids gained popularity rapidly through their regular participation in AMA races and events. The members, dressed in their signature long white gloves, would parade on the race courses much to the delight of men and women alike. Linda Dugeau would be inducted to the AMA Hall of Fame in 2004. Pearl Hoel Facts: Known as the First Lady of Sturgis, Pearl and her husband Pappy founded the legendary Sturgis Rally and was inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame in 1991. Pearl is not on this because of her amazing riding feats, instead she makes the cut because of her contribution to the motorcycle industry. As a recognized pillar of the community and long-time member of the Sturgis municipalities, she was instrumental in getting the townsfolk of Sturgis to accept her husband’s wild ideas. they did as their annual motorcycle rally attracts riders from all across the United States to their little piece of heaven in the Black Hills. Her husband gets the official credit for forming the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club and the Black Hills Motor Classic event, but the story is that Pearl had the influence that made it all happen. Basically, she was the glue that held all the many complicated pieces together and allowed the Sturgis Rally to persevere and grow. Her reputation and influence over the wives of the local businessman was a key ingredient to the recipe for success. The couple established their Indian Motorcycle Dealership which was the conduit to the creation of the Jackpine Gypsies, men-only club for the folks who bought Indians from the dealership. In 1937 the Gypsies invited the Rapid City Pioneers Motorcycle Club to Sturgis for the inaugural Black Hills Motor Classic and the rest as they say, is history. The Sturgis business owners were happy to see the people coming into the town from all over, just to participate in the event and together with the Hoel family, they laid the foundation for what is arguably the most recognized motorcycle rally on the planet. What started as a handful of enthusiasts riding around the old horse flat track for fun and camping in the backyard of the Hoel residence has evolved into an event that brings in a halfmillion riders to the region. As the years went by, the Sturgis Rally grew beyond anyone’s wildest expectations, and Pearl has served as the constant presence through it all. She was also the conduit to the original history of the rally, responsible for

telling tales, recounting facts and sharing that information with anyone, journalists in particular, who asked for her help. She was active in the rally until the day she passed away in 2005 at the age of 99 and was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1991. She will always be known as the “First Lady of Sturgis.” The first six women highlighted were all women who deserve to be recognized for the pioneering effort and riding spirit in the early years of motorcycle history. The transcontinental rides, the breakthrough in women’s rights and the formation of clubs and events like Sturgis are all huge accomplishments that deserve to be remembered. The funny thing is, that each of them started out with a simple passion for motorcycles. It’s the same burning desire to feel the win on our face and that freedom and independence that exemplifies what it means to ride a motorcycle. We will continue to ride the way-back machine for a little while longer by taking a peek at the accomplishments of a few ladies that know a thing or two about twisting a more modern throttle. As the decades transitioned from the 50s and 60s to the 70s and 80s the emphasis on riders that have done memorable things seems to have revolved around racing exploits. For that reason, the next batch of battling beauties starts with a few gals who made a name for themselves by riding a motorcycle a few miles per hour beyond its limits. Source: J&P Cycles

Mystic Seaport
18
As Judy and I named our home Mystic Meadows, it’s only natural that we visited Mystic Seaport, in Mystic Connecticut, and on the Mystic River. Instead of our horses and Harleys, they have boats. The museum, which covers 19 acres, was founded in 1929 to gather and preserve artifacts of the seafaring past. It has now grown to become a national center for maritime education and research. Besides having more than 500 historic watercrafts, there are also a recreation of a 19th century coastal village, a working shipyard, and exhibits of historical artifacts. One of the four National Historic Landmark vessels in the seaport, is the whaleship Charles W. Morgan, built in 1841 and the oldest surviving commercial ship in the U.S. Of all surviving U.S. ships, only the USS Constitution is older. Built in 1908, the Sabino is the oldest coal-fired steamboat in operation in the U.S. She was built to ferry passengers and cargo around the Maine islands. Today, she makes regular runs at the seaport, during warmer weather. The L.A. Dunton is a 123 foot Gloucester fisherman, launched in 1921, and one of the last large engineless sailing schooners built. The final Landmark vessel, the Emma C. Berry, built in 1866, is a Noank “smack” style fishing schooner. Another historic vessel is the fully rigged , Joseph Conrad, a 111 foot training ship, built in 1882. It was designed to train 80 cadets at the time and did so for over 4,000, during its career. It, also, was sailed 58,000 miles around the world, by former owner Captain Alan Villers. Today it is still used as a trainer in the Mystic Mariner Program, Take the time to wander through some of these historic ships to discover living and working conditions for these early sailors. Even the owners and captains lives were Spartan. I much prefer today’s cruise ship cabins. The recreated coastal village includes working exhibits, such as: shipcarver’s shop, shipsmith shop, cooperage, print shop, along with representative homes of the era and numerous exhibits. You feel that you are a part of an earlier seafaring day. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper

RIDER SAFETY Lessons from the TN State Police Motor Units
Every January, the coaches from the Tennessee Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) meet for our re-certification courses at a Tennessee State Park. One of my favorite classes is called the “Coaches Challenge” and we get to spend time with officers from the Tennessee State Police Motor Units. The officers set up a course made from a series of cones for us to compete against each other. The objective is to follow the course implicitly, not touch a cone, not put a foot down and finish in the fastest time possible. If you have not seen officers complete one of these courses, visit YouTube.com and search for “police motorcycle challenge” – you will be truly amazed at their skill! Needless to say that we not only learn about our skill levels, we also have great fun! This year, I had the opportunity to talk with Trooper William Head and Trooper Matthew Priest, both from the Tennessee Highway Patrol. I asked them, based on their experience with motorcycle accidents on Tennessee roads, what skill motorcyclists should be practicing. The answer was braking. Not just emergency braking, but braking in general. Based on the information shared by Trooper Head, I felt that reviewing Braking to A Stop and Emergency Stopping in next month’s Thunder Roads Tennessee might be beneficial. As coaches, we instruct our new riders to roll off the throttle, squeeze in the clutch lever and front brake while pressing on

the rear brake pedal. And let’s not forget the rider should be keeping the head up with the eyes looking ahead. The left foot should touch the ground first as the right foot should be on the rear brake pedal until the motorcycle is stopped. You should also be in 1st gear by the time you stop and handlebars should be square. If you need to brake to a stop in a curve, it is important to gradually apply both brakes as you straighten your motorcycle. Before coming to a complete stop, the motorcycle should be straight and the handlebars square. Remember to downshift and keep the clutch lever pulled in. According the MSF, “the front brake provides 70 percent or more of the stopping power.” This is due to the your weight being shifted forward pushing the front tire onto the road surface resulting in more grip than the rear tire. Develop the habit of using both brakes just to prepare yourself for the time you will need to make a quick stop. It is important that you learn to make a smooth, controlled stop before practicing quicker stops. Get a good feel for your brake controls. Keep your speed low as you practice stopping quickly because too much pressure may cause a skid or loss of control. Whether you are a new rider or a seasoned rider, consider taking the Basic RiderCourse offered by the MSF. The course will review the basics of braking and stopping. And, you will get practice with emergency stopping and learn how to react to front and rear tire skids. Join me back next month for a review of these skills and remember that your safety starts with you! Donna, along with being an avid riding enthusiast, is a MSF motorcycle safety coach for the state of Tennessee and a Harley-Davidson Riding Academy Coach. She is a member of the Motor Maids, H.O.G. and Ladies of Harley.

IRISH SHEPHERD’S PIE
3 Tubs of Bob Evans Premade Mashed Potatoes; 2 Traditional Style, 1 Sour Cream & Chives 1 Bag of Frozen Carrots, Peas & Pearl Onions 1 Bag of Frozen Sweet Kernel Corn 1 Lb. of Ground Chuck 1 Lb. of Applewood Bacon 1 Small Tub of Whipped Philly Cream Cheese Palmful of Cumin, Parsley, Smoked Paprika Salt & Pepper to Taste 1 Large Bag of Shredded Cheddar Cheese In a large cast iron skillet, brown off your ground beef and let it cook really well on one side to get that beautiful caramelization color. Add your dry spices to meat while cooking. When I have to do big batches of bacon I do on a large cookie sheet w/ a rack and put in oven at 475 degrees for 20 minutes and you don’t even have to flip and they come out nice and crispy. Drain on paper towels and then chop in larger pieces. Drain ground chuck and set aside. Let skillet cool and mix your potatoes all together along w/ cream cheese to blend flavors. Lay down a layer on bottom of skillet, then alternate with all your other ingredients, but ending up with potatoes on top and cheese throughout but also the layer under the top layer of potatoes, put your corn and veggies as combined layers. Put skillet into pre-heated 360 degrees oven and cook for 40 minutes, use spray butter over top of potatoes to brown up nice and even. Remove and sprinkle green scallions over top. This is truly a One Pot Wonder and so easy to make but tastes like it took hours. Feel free to add other dried spices to ground chuck when cooking; a touch of nutmeg, a sprinkle of cinnamon, get creative and have fun.
IRISH POTATO PANCAKES 1 Tub of Bob Evans Premade Mashed Potatoes 1 Cup of Half & Half Cream 1/4 Cup of Flour 2 Lemons; zested and divided equally 1/4 Cup of Chives; dried is fine; just rub together between fingers to freshen them up before adding 1 tsp. baking powder 1 large egg; beaten 1 Cup of Bailey’s Irish Cream Liquor Salt & Pepper to taste Add milk and flour and mash util smooth. Add the zest of one lemon, 2 Tbls. of chives, baking powder and egg; stir to combine along w/ salt & pepper. In a separate bowl combine the Bailey’s Irish Creme, chives and zest of other lemon. Stir to combine all. This is going to be your sauce to top Irish pancakes. Use a ladle as you would regular pancakes and spoon onto a griddle or cast iron skillet or quality non-stick skillet. Let brown up nice, remove from skillet, slather with Irish butter (in any grocery next to regular butter) and then pour over the Irish Cream like syrup. Magically Delicious!
TRADITIONAL IRISH COFFEE 1 Cup of Freshly Brewed Hot Coffee 1 Tbls. of Brown Sugar Added to Coffee 1 Shot of Authentic Irish Whiskey; stir to mix Take a teaspoon, flip it over and pour Bailey’s Irish Cream Liquor over top, gently to float on top Top w/ spoonfuls of whipped cream either from a can and sprayed into a bowl or homemade. Sprinkle top w/ cinnamon for garnish. Drink up Lassies & Laddies. So warm & comforting.

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)
BUTCH HARBAUGH, GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN It is with great sadness that we report the death of longtime Freedom Fighter, Butch Harbaugh, former Chairman of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists - Legislative Task Force (NCOM-LTF), among other positions. Butch passed away February 7th from heart failure and cancer. “When I began as the AIM (Aid to Injured Motorcyclists) and NCOM Attorney for Oregon back in the late 1980’s, Butch was actively involved with ABATE, and with BikePAC since it was founded,” recalls Sam Hochberg, AIM Attorney Emeritus, and now Of Counsel to Christopher Slater, Oregon & Washington AIM Attorney. “He spent many years as the lobbyist for ABATE, and was well-known, respected and liked by many in the legislature in Salem.” A biker rights activist since the 1970s, Butch attended and helped organize many STEAM conferences and ABATE/BikePac planning retreats. He was a regular at many ABATE runs around the state, often helping AIM Chief of Staff “Gunny”, now retired, at the AIM/NCOM tables, and was known and highly respected in the biker’s rights community nationwide. Butch also participated in many NCOM Conventions, and in 2003 was bestowed with the Ron Roloff Lifetime Achievement Award, NCOM’s highest tribute. This year’s 32nd Annual Convention, to be held over Mother’s Day weekend May 11-14th in Reno, Nevada at the Silver Legacy Resort Casino, will be dedicated in his honor. For the past dozen or so years, Butch lived with his loving wife Laura in Rigby, Idaho, where he enjoyed riding his Panhead and was active in the home-brewing community. Always friendly, engaging and enthusiastic about motorcycles and biker’s rights, he will be greatly missed. With the 32nd Annual NCOM Convention in Reno just weeks away, at this time the National Coalition of Motorcyclists is requesting that MROs, motorcycle clubs, and riding associations submit the names of those members and supporters who have died since last May, so that we may honor their memories during the traditional “Ringing of the Bell” tribute to fallen riders during the opening ceremonies. Dedications should be e-mailed in advance to Bill Bish at NCOMBish@aol.com, or can be handdelivered at the Convention to “Doc” Reichenbach, NCOM Chairman of the Board. NHTSA SEEKS TO CURB DRIVER DISTRACTIONS The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is proposing new federal guidelines to provide a safety framework for developers of portable and aftermarket electronic devices to use when developing visual-manual user interfaces for their systems. According to NHTSA and the Department of Transportation (DOT), their “Visual-Manual NHTSA Driver Distraction Guidelines for Portable and Aftermarket Devices” [Docket No. NHTSA-2013-0137] will “encourage innovative solutions such as pairing and Driver Mode that, when implemented, will reduce the potential for unsafe driver distraction by limiting the time a driver’s eyes are off the road, while at the same time preserving the full functionality of these devices when they are not used while driving.” Driver distraction is a specific type of inattention that occurs when drivers divert their attention away from the driving task to focus on another activity. This distraction can come from electronic devices, such as texting or emailing on cell phones or smartphones, and more traditional activi28
The crash data indicate that visual-manual interaction (an action that requires a user to look away from the roadway and manipulate a button or interface) with portable devices, particularly cell phones, is often the main distraction for drivers involved in crashes. In 2015, 10% of the 35,092 traffic fatalities involved one or more distracted drivers, and these distraction-affected crashes resulted in 3,477 fatalities, an 8.8% increase from the 3,197 fatalities in 2014. Of the 5.6 million non-fatal crashes in 2014, 16% were distraction-affected crashes, and resulted in 424,000 people injured. At any given time, an estimated 542,073 drivers are using hand-held cell phones while driving. Currently no safety guidelines exist for portable device technologies when they are used during a driving task. RESEARCHERS BLAME “OTHER DRIVERS” FOR MOST MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS An Australian study states “failure of other drivers to give way” as the most common factor in motorcycle accidents. Research by Monash University in Melbourne has found that human error was the primary contributing factor for 94% of bike accidents. “Whilst with single-bike crashes, rider error and loss of control were found to be the most common causes, for incidents involving more than one vehicle, it was found that ‘motorcycle crashes occurring in lighter traffic more likely involved an error by another driver, including such things as failure to give way’.” The motorcycle crash research studied over two hundred and thirty accidents between January 2012 and August 2014, with nurses at the hospitals and crash scene investigators aiding with the compilation of the data. “Whilst car drivers were responsible for the majority of accidents in lessdense traffic, it was the motorcyclist to be more likely at fault for most ‘urban’ crashes and collisions however,” Trevor Allen of the Monash University Research Centre told The Herald Sun newspaper, adding that this was most likely due to the greater frequency of danger; “Higher traffic density leads to more hazards and a higher level of difficulty for riders to move safely in and among traffic, compared with other vehicles.” The research also found that the older the rider, the less likely it was that the rider was primarily to blame for the accident. STUDY SHOWS MOTORCYCLE MARKET EXPANDS WHILE E-MOTO SALES FLATTEN According to a study by the market research company Freedonia Group, global demand for all types of motorcycles is projected to climb 3.8% per year through 2020 to 113 million units. Internal combustion engine (ICE) models have historically dominated the global motorcycle market, but demand for e-bikes and electric scooters, motorcycles, and mopeds has grown rapidly. In 2005, electric models accounted for just 22% of worldwide motorcycle sales. Their share of the market grew to 35% in 2015, as the use of electric motorcycles in China increased sharply. “Multiple developed countries – particularly Germany, the Netherlands, and the U.S. – also registered rapid electric product sales growth during the 2010-2015 period,” said analyst Gleb Mytko. Global demand for ICE motorcycles is forecast to increase 5.5% per year through 2020, according to Freedonia Group’s World Motorcycle Sales Study, with

advances fueled by strong ICE product sales gains in a wide range of industrializing nations. As personal incomes in these countries rise between 2015 and 2020, more households will be able to afford motorcycles. Improving market conditions in the U.S., Western Europe, Japan, and other mature markets will contribute to growth as well. Worldwide sales of e-bikes and electric motorcycles, scooters, and mopeds is projected to be flat during the 2015-2020 period because of declining product demand in China, by far the world’s largest market for electric models, though demand for electric motorcycles outside of that country is forecast to grow at a double-digit annual pace. In developed nations, e-bikes will continue to rapidly capture market share from bicycles. LANE-SPLITTING BILL INTRODUCED IN LONE STAR STATE Texas is contemplating becoming only the second state, after California, to allow motorcycle riders to split lanes in heavy traffic under certain conditions. Senate Bill 228 was introduced on December 9, 2016, and if passed would make it legal for motorcycles to ride between lanes of traffic on limited-access or controlled-access highways during periods of traffic congestion at a speed not more than 5 mph above the speed of other traffic, and only if that traffic is moving at 20 mph or less. Lane-splitting, which was a long-standing but legally-ambiguous practice in California until it was made legal there in 2016, is common in Europe where motorcycles typically “filter” to the front of the line at intersections and ride between lanes of traffic in crowded cities. Lane-splitting advocates in the U.S. cite the safety of the practice overseas as well as its effect on reducing traffic congestion. MISSISSIPPI CONSIDERS LOWERING SALES TAX ON MOTORCYCLES Legislation has been introduced (House Bill No. 1631 by Representative Steve Hopkins R-D7) which would “reduce the sales tax rate on retail sales of motorcycles from 7% to 5%,” as well as reduce the sales tax on other agricultural and farming products. On February 15, the legislation was referred to the House Ways and Means Committee. QUINCY MIDNIGHT MOTORCYCLE BAN - FALSE! According to the Massachusetts Motorcycle Association (MMA), a recent report on quincy.com indicating that the City of Quincy, MA, has inMarch 2017
stituted a ban against any motorcycle being ridden between the hours of Midnight and 5am, unless exempted for work or emergency purposes, is NOT correct. Although such a proposal was indeed filed, the council member who introduced it “immediately asked that it be withdrawn” after learning that such a proposal would not be legal. NCOM CONVENTION ROLLS INTO RENO The 32nd annual NCOM Convention will be held Mother’s Day weekend, May 11-14, 2017 at the Silver Legacy Resort-Casino, located at 407 N. Virginia St. in Reno, Nevada so reserve your room now for the special NCOM rate of $99 by calling (800) 687-8733 and mention “GNCOM17”. The largest gathering of motorcycle rights activists in the world, this year’s NCOM Convention will draw over a thousand concerned bikers from across the country to the “Biggest Little City in the World” to engage in serious discussions on topics of concern to all riders. All motorcyclists are welcomed and encouraged to participate in the many meetings, seminars and group discussions that focus on legislative efforts and litigation techniques to protect our riders’ rights and preserve Freedom of the Road. Topics will range from legal and legislative issues to organizational effectiveness, with Special Meetings for Veterans Affairs, Women in Motorcycling, Clean & Sober Roundtable and World of Sport Bikes, as well as the Christian Unity Conference and Confederation of Clubs Patch Holders Meeting. NCOM has successfully outreached to numerous segments of the motorcycling community in an effort to unite for our rights, both legal and legislatively, and has become a unifying voice amongst North America’s motorcycle rights organizations (MROs), motorcycle clubs, women riders, religious riding organizations, touring groups, trikers, sportbikers, and minority motorcyclists. One morning, three West Virginia (by God) Rednecks and three Politicians were in a ticket line at a train station. The three Politicians each bought a ticket and watched as the three Rednecks bought just one ticket. “How are the three of you going to travel on only one ticket?” asked one of the Politicians. “Watch and learn,” answered one of the boys from West Virginia. All six boarded the train where the three Politicians sat down, but the three Rednecks crammed into a toilet together and closed the door. Shortly after the train departed, the conductor came around to collect tickets. He knocked on the toilet door and said, “Ticket, please.” The door opened just a crack and a single arm emerged with a ticket in hand. The conductor took it and moved on. The Politicians saw this happen and agreed it was quite a clever idea. Indeed, so clever they decided to do the same thing on the return trip and save some money. That afternoon when they got back to the station, they bought a single ticket for the return trip and watched, while to their astonishment, the three Rednecks didn’t buy even one ticket. “How are you going to travel without a ticket?” asked one of the perplexed Politicians. “Watch and learn,” answered the three West Virginia boys in unison. When they boarded the train, the three Politicians crammed themselves into a toilet and the three Rednecks crammed into another toilet just down the way. Shortly after the train began to move, one of the Rednecks left their toilet and walked over to the toilet in which the Politicians were hiding. The Redneck knocked on the door and said, “Ticket, please”. ___________________________________________________ Little Johnny came down for breakfast one morning and asked his Grandma, “Where’s Mom and Dad?” and she replied, “They’re still up in bed.” Little Johnny giggled and left. He came back in for lunch and asked “Where’s Mom and Dad?” and Grandma gave the same reply. Again he giggled and left. Then he came in for dinner and once again he asked his Grandma, “Where’s Mom and Dad?” and his Grandmother replied, “Gracious, they’re still up in bed!” Little Johnny started to laugh and his Grandmother asked, “What gives? Every time I tell you they’re still up in bed you start to laugh! What is going on here?” Little Johnny replied, “Well, last night Daddy came into my bedroom and asked me for the Vaseline and I gave him my jar of super glue for my model airplanes by mistake.” 30
A DEA Agent stopped at a ranch in Texas and talked to an old rancher. He told the rancher, “I need to inspect your ranch for illegally grown drugs.” The rancher said, “okay, but don’t go into that field over there...”, as he pointed out the location. The DEA Agent verbally exploded and said, “look mister, I have the authority of the federal government with me!” Reaching into his rear back pocket, the arrogant officer removed his badge and proudly displayed it to the rancher. “See this authentic badge?! This badge means I can go wherever I want... On any land! No questions asked, no answers given! Do you understand old man?!”The rancher kindly nodded, apologized, and went about his chores. Moments later, the rancher heard loud screams, he looked up and saw the DEA agent running for his life, being chased by the ranchers big Santa Gertrudis Bull...... With every step the bull was gaining ground on the officer, and it was likely that he’d sure enough get gored before he reached safety. The officer was clearly terrified. The old rancher threw down his tools, ran as fast as he could to the fence, and yelled at the top of his lungs..... “Your Badge!.......Show him your Authentic Badge!” ___________________________________________________ Several years ago, a very rich business owner was having an affair with a beautiful young Italian woman. She told him that she was pregnant. He had all this confirmed by his private Doctor. He did not want the scandal of a divorce nor wanting to ruin his reputation or his marriage, he said he would pay her a large sum of money if she would just stay in Italy to secretly have and raise the child. He would also buy her a small but quaint 2 bedroom cottage. She agreed, but asked how he would know when the baby was born.. To keep it discreet, he told her to simply mail him a post card, and write ‘Spaghetti’ on the back. He would then arrange for the child support payments to begin every month. One day, about 9 months later, he came home to his confused wife. ‘Honey, she said, ‘you received a very strange post card today.’ ‘Oh, just give it to me and I’ll explain it later,’ he said. The wife obeyed and watched as her husband read the card, turned white, and fainted. On the card was written: Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti. Two with meatballs, two without. March 2017
by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley
Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: In Tennessee March 29th, has been designated as the day to recognize Vietnam Veterans. There is an ongoing national 50th anniversary commemoration that was authorized by public law in 2008 as a part of the Defense Authorization Act. The purpose is to facilitate programs and activities to commemorate the Vietnam War and those who served during the time period of the war. The commemorative program includes activities and ceremonies to thank and honor veterans of the Vietnam War, including personnel who were held as prisoners of war (POW), or listed as missing in action (MIA), for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the United States and to thank and honor the families of these veterans. 2017 is the year that marks the 50th anniversary of 1967. During 1967 there were 61 young American’s who were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, our nation’s highest award for valor. Many of them gave their life in the process. The first Woman Marine arrived in Vietnam. B-52’s were first sent to Thailand. The US Coast Guard ship Barataria conducted the first Coast Guard fire mission in Vietnam. The Infiltration Surveillance Center was constructed to monitor the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The Department of Defense Prisoner of War Policy Committee was established. During operations against North Vietnam a Zuni rocket ignited and launched across the flight deck of the USS Forrestal and hit an A4 Skyhawk. The resulting fire killed 134 of the crew and injured 62 more. North Vietnamese combat operations intensified beginning in September 1967. The 23rd Infantry Division (Americal) was activated. The 1st Brigade of 101st Airborne Division deployed to join the brigades that had been in Vietnam since 1965 and became the last full Army Division deployed to Vietnam. To cap the year US forces enacted a two-day cease fire for Christmas. During 1967 11,153 Americans died in Vietnam and 645 Americans went missing in action. Many of those who went missing were captured and became prisoners of war. There are still 1,617 Americans missing in action. Their families are still waiting for them to come home and to learn their fate. March 2017
There will be a Vietnam Veteran Welcome Home event on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Charlie Daniels Park in Mount Juliet, Tennessee for the public. It is being coordinated by the American Legion Chapter 281 Legion Riders with support from other veterans’ organizations. The show kicks off at 10am with the Derek Jones Band, National Guard Band and the opening ceremonies. There will be several speakers and ceremonies to honor veterans, those who have not come home and information from the Wilson County Veterans Service Office. The formal ceremonies will conclude about 12:45 and the bands will crank up and play from 1pm to 4pm. If you want to have a good time, hear some great music from the Don Willis Band, Mike Mueller Band and the Mack Blackwell Band please stop in and enjoy. There will be plenty of vendors to keep you from being hungry or thirsty. The weather should be good for riding the bike and there will be lots of those at the event. One more point!!! The protests being waged by the socialists and communists in this country to undercut and take down our new President are “Deja-Vue all over again” to Vietnam Veterans. The media is throwing its weight around to create animosity towards the new President and ignite trouble in the streets. It’s the same anarchist mindset and tactics that battered and spit on Vietnam Veterans when we came home from the war. Its only recently that many Vietnam Veterans have been willing to say publicly they served. Even today almost all of the Vietnam Veteran Welcome Home events are put on by Vietnam Veterans because much of the general public is still hesitant to just come out and say “Thank You for Your Service” or do something in public to show appreciation. 2.7 million Americans served in the Vietnam War, 58,272 of them are listed on the Vietnam Wall in Washington. Those who came home are dying at a rate of 365 per day. Wouldn’t you like to come by and tell them, “Welcome Home” at least once before they are gone and it’s too late? Freedom is not Free!!! Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. Bulldog * My monthly column reflects my personal point of view and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Publishers of this magazine, but they, like me, acknowledge the sacrifice s made for the privilege of Freedom of Speech, therefore, they gratefully let me rant. Thank you for reading my rants. Hope my opinions don’t offend anyone, but, we all should be grateful for the right to have free opinions.
