Spotter- Spotter is a 2 year old neutered male Labrador/Staffy Mix. He has been with us for several months and is ready for his forever. He needs someone patient with dog experience as he still has some manners to learn, but he is eager to please. He would do best in a home with no small children as he is a big guy with lots of energy. Tanner- Tanner is a 2.5 year old neutered male Labrador Mix. He is a big guy weighing in at just over 80lbs. He would do best in a home with a big yard and lots of room to run. He needs someone to teach him manners because he gets very excited jumps up to greet his humans. He would do best in a home with older children because he is a big guy with lots of energy. He is potty trained and will sit for treats!
Bloom- Bloom is a 1 year old spayed female Pointer/Staffy Mix. She is a little shy when you first meet her, but she really opens up around other dogs, so she would do best in a home with a canine companion. She is a sweet girl who wants nothing but love and belly rubs once she warms up to you, and she is ready for her forever home! Chloe- Chloe is a 2.5 year old spayed female Sharpei/ Labrador Mix. She is also house broken and would make a great family dog!
Violet - Violet is a 2 year old spayed female Staffy/Labrador Mix. She has a big personality and has come out of her shell during her time at McKamey. Before coming to McKamey, she lived her whole life outside on a chain, so she has some permanent scars on her ears from being gnawed on by flies. She is a bit scared of other dogs, so she would do best in a home without another dog, and she is so ready for her forever home!

“The Bucket List” What would be on your “Bucket List” if you knew your time was almost up? Would those petty arguments you’ve been having with loved ones still be an issue? We now live in a narcissistic society with narcissistic churches. Everybody is more concerned about themselves than their fellow man. There is too many sermons about “What God can do for me, what can the church do for me, what the pastor can do for me.” When we finally do something for someone else, we want the media there to film it, or if we can’t write it off our taxes, we won’t do it. John 13:1-14 “Jesus knew that His hour was come” all the miracles, healing the sick, raising the dead, teaching his disciples how to build and maintain the New Testament Church, was coming to an end. Jesus had one more item on His “Bucket List” to teach them, it would be the biggest lesson of all, it would not be about church doctrine, not about theology, but servanthood. “Having loved His own which were in the world” even though they still had worldly issues, “He loved them unto the end.”
the people of that day walked everywhere they went while wearing sandals, so when they got to where they were going, their feet were filthy. It was the job of the lowest servant of the house to wash everyone’s feet as they entered into a home. I couldn’t help but notice that all the disciples were eating with dirty feet, not one of them ever washed his own feet. But not only did Christ washed their feet, “but He wipe them with the towel wherewith He was girded.” What do people get when they get you, what will they lose when they lose you, make sure that people will miss you when you’re gone. What is your purpose in life, what purpose do you serve? If you don’t serve a purpose, you have no value. The greater the purpose, the greater the value. Money always follows service. We must learn how to serve instead of being served. Jesus ended with this; “If I then your Lord and master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.” We must stop this self-centered Christian attitude that is sweeping through our churches.
“And supper being ended…He riseth from supper…He laid aside His garments…girded himself.” First thing to notice; “supper being ended” there comes a time to eat, to refuel yourself, but there also comes a time for the “supper to end,” a time to work, to burn off the fuel you received at the supper table. The feeding faze should end and the service faze begins. Today the modern day Christian just wants to come to church, pray, sing songs, teach and preach, but we don’t go out and compel people to come to the House of God. We want to fill our tank but what we don’t burn off will just go flat. Are you content with just another “Readers Digest” message, if you have a hard time with revelation knowledge, it’s because your fuel’s gone flat. While the Last Supper was still going on, the disciples got into an argument about who’s going to sit on His Mat.20:27 “And whosoever will be chief among you, let him right side or His left side in the kingdom. When “Jesus laid be your servant.” aside His garments,” Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your He was laying aside His agenda to serve and teach them kickstand up. the most powerful lesson of all. Too many of us today are To be found faithful, trying to serve God with our own agenda. “He poured water Pastor Ron into a basin, and began to wash the disciple’s feet.” Most of January 2016

History of Motorcycles Part 11
T
he 1980’s brought many changes to American pop culture. The birth of Pac-Man and Microsoft Windows paved the way for technology to supersede human interaction, and the assassination of John Lennon ushered in the downfall of music as we knew it. By the end of the decade we saw the Berlin Wall fall and inflation rise to record levels. What impact did this have on the motorcycle world? Well let’s just say that Japan was doing far more than selling the first compact disc players the world had ever seen. Japanese bikes were quickly becoming hotter than an 80’s teen girl wearing Love’s Baby Soft. Though motorcycling had been popular for years, it became more accessible to some riders due in part to the many low-priced and easy to ride Japanese models on the market. To capitalize on the growing market the Japanese began to leave behind the designs that had originally helped them explode onto the motorcycle scene in America. Some developments that emerged earlier in motorcycle history quickly became standards in the 80’s…water cooling, shaft drives as opposed to chains, and virtually any modification that could boost performance and speed. An interesting aspect of many 80’s bikes was the plethora of modern high-technology additions including electronic instruments with basic computers and LCD displays, 6 speed transmissions, and triple disk brakes. Some noteworthy Japanese bikes of the 80’s include the Honda V45 and V65 Magna. Introduced in 1982, it was one of the original 80’s cruisers with a 750. In 1983 the V65 was released as an 1100. Many saw this 8
as Honda challenging HarleyDavidson by indicating engine size in cubic inches (Harley’s standard measurement) versus cc’s. The Magna would evolve through the decade into the Super Magna, but would never gain as much respect on the American market as the Honda Shadow. American buyers preferred the more “Harley-esque” appearance and performance provided by the Shadow. Prior to the split between performance bikes and cruisers became as prominent as we see today, Kawasaki decided to take the engine from their legendary “Ninja” and equip a low slung cruiser frame with it. What they produced was the Eliminator…a 900 cc (later a 1000 cc) water cooled inline-four with a 6 speed transmission that produced over 100 HP in a sleeker and lighter model than Honda’s Magna. Suzuki produced the Madura 700 and 1200, and the models certainly combined power and style. Another example of an 80’s v-4 cruiser, but was quickly abandoned by Suzuki after only two years of production…a fact that makes them somewhat of a rarity, though the body styling appears quite dated to most. Probably the best thing to come out of Suzuki in the 80’s was the Katana. The Katana integrated style and function and added modern aerodynamics without simply covering the bike in cheap plastic panels. Its release did however lead in part to the start of “plastic” motorcycles, when other manufacturers began following the futuristic design of the Katana. Yamaha made its own contributions to the technological

advancement of motorcycles in the 80’s. The FZR 400RR SP burst on to the scene as one of the first aluminum beam frames and housed a 399 cc inline-four. The SP enhanced that simple rightness with a tapered aluminum swingarm, a single seat, and a faired-in headlight. But perhaps Yamaha’s greatest accomplishment of the 80’s was the V-Max. The V-Max is the only “80’s bike” that remains in production today. And interestingly, they hold their resale value better than any other Japanese model…similar to the value retention of a Harley. Speaking of Harley-Davidson….what were they up to during the decade of Space Invaders and now iconic “Brat Pack” movies? In 1980 Harley is still owned by AMF, but they released a historical bike anyway…the FXB Sturgis model in honor of the iconic Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The Sturgis model was equipped with a belt drive, black chrome appointments, and an 80 cubic inch engine. 1981 rolled around and a letter of intent was signed by thirteen H-D executives to buy back Harley-Davidson Motor Company from AMF. The year carried on, and then June 15th happened….it wasn’t just the day my baby brother entered the world and removed me from my youngest child throne…Harley-Davidson was officially no longer owned by AMF. Harley was back, and with a new commitment to quality, they would cruise through the remainder of the decade releasing the FXR/FXRS Super Glide II with its rubber-isolated, five speed powertrain and the welded and stamped frame for the new Sportster models. In 1983 Harley responds to the stockpiling of Japanese motorcycle inventory in the United States by petitioning the International Trade Commission for tariff relief…and it is granted. Perhaps the greatest achievement of the 80’s for Harley was the release of the 1340 cc Evolution engine on five models, including the all-new Softail in 1985. The Evolution motor was the result of seven years of development, and designed to produce more power at every speed, run cooler and January 2016
cleaner, and was oil tight. The end of the decade showed that Harley-Davidson was again on top of its game when the company requested the International Trade Commission terminate their earlier granted tariff. A monumental move in American business history that demonstrated confidence in Harley’s ability to compete in the marketplace. They then released the Heritage Softail model, began using the Evolution motor in Sportster models, and bought the Holiday Rambler Corporation. The 80’s was rounded out with the return of the springer front end on the FXSTS Springer Softail and the introduction of the Sportster 1200 to mark the 85th Anniversary of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. The 80’s was a turbulent decade for many, but the motorcycle industry continued to forge ahead as always. The 1990’s was no exception. After perfecting the basics in the two-wheel industry there is only one thing left to do…and that’s improve. Next time we will look at what advancements the industry made, and motorcycling became mainstream. Melanie Schwarte, Thunder Roads Magazine® Iowa

Farewell to an Icon Lannie Lewis Boswell 4/25/1926-11/21/2015 Confirming Mr. Boswell’s status as a true icon in the motorcycle world, the legendary Willie G., along with Nancy and Bill Davidson, flew in to attend his visitation. He could be honestly called a-one-of-a-kind “Character”. No one could be more dedicated to motorcycle riding than Mr. B. He even stood up his future wife, on their supposed first date, instead, going to a bike race. He and his brother, Otis, became a Harley dealer in 1949, in Henderson KY. He served in the U.S. Army in 1950-52. In 1955, Otis left to open a dealership in Owensboro. In 1959, Mr. B. bought out Eddie Conley’s Evansville dealership, before moving to Nashville in 1965. Even after he had turned over management of the dealership to Bubba, he was often seen around the dealership and attended many activities, including, a few days before his death, the Boswell’s Toy Parade. He was still riding his Harley trike into his late 80’s. His family was the only thing more important to him than motorcycles. It has been my privilege to know Mr. Boswell since 1997, and later, serving with him on the Tennessee Motorcycle Safety Advisory Board. To Mr. B., customers were friends and we all felt he was a special friend. He formed the Music City Riders many years before Harley thought up HOG, using it as an instrument to get to know and ride with his customers. This cultivating of customers as friends allowed him to weather the AMF days, when many other dealerships failed. He was a hard worker, continuing to run the golf car business and farming, until the day of his death. Family revealed that, while in the hospital, he was still instructing on delivery dates on golf cars and farm chores needing to be done. Mr. B. was a really great guy and one of my favorite people. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Doris, three daughters, Carolyn Hobbs, Joyce Krech, Barbara Shane, son, Bubba, 9 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. Our Condolences go out to all of his family and many, many friends. He will be truly missed. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper

Bike of the Month
1949 Indian Scout Vertical Twin by Tom Williams In 2010, while my wife Susan and I were having a conversation about motorcycles, she shared with me that our Son-In-Law had mentioned that he had an old Indian. This stirred up my curiosity, so I called him and asked him what it was. He said it’s a 1949 Indian Scout, and he would consider selling it. We made arrangements to meet him where he had it stored which happen to be in the attic of his garage. This was probably a saving grace for the old girl, since she had been kept out of the elements. I guess I was expecting a V-Twin Indian, but when he started pulling engine parts out of boxes, I realized it was a Vertical Twin. I was not familiar with this model and looking around at all of the boxes full of parts, everything was disassembled, engine, transmission and nothing was labeled as to which box or boxes went with each other. I wasn’t sure I was ready for this task. So, my Bride and I discussed it and decided that if the price was right, we would make a try at it. The price was right, so we loaded up the boxes and the frame, wheels, rusty gas tank and a chopped up rear fender. Driving home, we discussed where to start and I suggested that we look on the internet for any information. Much to our surprise, there was and is a lot of information on these bikes and we found a reproduced repair and overhaul manual as well as a spare parts manual on EBay. We paid about $25.00 each for them and I chuckled when I saw the front covers, as it had a price of $1.50 for the spare parts and $2.50 for the overhaul manual. I will have to say that without the overhaul manual, we would probably still be trying to sort it out. Once we had an idea of what we had and didn’t have, we started the task of trying to find parts. The problem with these old bikes is finding usable parts. You can find some on EBay and there are several vendors out there, but the question still remains, are they usable. We spent the better part of two years gathering parts and they came from California to Maine. It has some reproduction parts on it such as the exhaust, headlight and speedometer; the rest is original, including the seat. So, came the day of reckoning, after all the work, adjusting this and that, we decided to go for it. Will she start? Gas on, prime the carburetor, kick it through while choking, key on, kick it, and nothing. This went on for days. Although we had the magneto completely rebuilt, I decided to check the spark. Took the plugs out, grounded one to the head, and then the other,
January 2016
both were sparking. Checked the timing of the mag to the crank and it was right on and knew it was getting gas because I could smell it. Some more sleepless nights trying to figure it out. Then I remembered one of the articles I had read and part of it was the problem with the magnetos, even from the factory, they weren’t dependable, in fact in 1950, Indian offered a battery ignition. Then I remembered how the spark looked when I checked it, it was orange in color, and my Dad had always told me that the spark had to be blue or it would not fire under compression. The article about the battery ignition was a simple fix. I bought a 6 volt coil with twin High Tension Terminals, removed the coil from the mag and used the points and condenser in the mag to fire the coil. Turned on the gas, primed the carburetor, kicked it through while choking, key on, second kick and she came to life. That roar made it all worthwhile. We also came across several articles about the bike, and none were too complimentary, in fact it carries the label as the reason Indian closed its doors in 1953, but in my opinion it was bad management. Indian CEO at the time, Ralph Rogers, was trying everything to keep Indian afloat, and had gotten wind that the UK was going to start exporting their bikes to the USA in 1950. So he put the whole Indian Team to come up with what he called “Gentlemen” bikes. His big mistake, in my opinion, was in 1949, all you could buy was the Vertical Twin or the Vertical Single. No Chiefs. The initial design of the verticals was a little ahead of their time, but faulty oil pumps, weak magnetos, small in size(under 300 pounds) and only 27 C.I. they just didn’t sell like Rogers hoped they would, and when the UK started shipping theirs to the USA, the devalued the Pound. So they were cheaper and better built. By the time it was ready to release the 1950’s models, most Indian dealers had switched over to Harley, trying to keep their doors open. We found and bought another one that was in Minnesota, but it’s mostly together and setting on its wheels, so the agony shouldn’t be too great, especially after all we have learned. Susan and I want thank Scott and Denise High of Thunder Roads Magazine for allowing us share our story. If anyone knows of any bike shows, we would like to show off the old Indian. Safe riding. Tom and Susan Williams If you have a cool custom bike you would like to have featured in our magazine, enter it in our monthly contest by submitting a pic of your bike to ThunderRoadsTn@gmail.com

Boswell’s 21 Annual st
Toy Parade
On November 7, Judy and I attended our 20th of the 21 Boswell’s toy parades. Our first, the 2nd, drew a few hundred riders, was held on a freezing day, left from the Rivergate store, and traveled to Fessler’s Lane. In contrast, the 21st attracted approximately 1,000 participants, was held on a beautiful day, gathered at Centennial Park, rode through downtown, and gave away a new 750 Street motorcycle. The proceeds go to the Metro Police Charities, which sponsors Shop With A Cop, The Christmas Basket Program, and the Police Youth Camp. Once again, Steve Welch and Stacie Ludford dressed as Santa and Mrs. Claus, attracted quite a few young at heart participants for pictures, while pleading their case of not being really that bad, this year. Bubba turned out to be a real Santa in deciding to give away the new Harley, despite falling a few short of beating the record of 1,100 registered attendees. After teasing several others, Bubba presented Deborah Midyett with the new bike. She said she’s never ridden by herself, but is now signing up for the rider’s course. Tommy, Chairman of the Tennessee Confederation of Clubs, wants to send out an unusual thank you to a Metro Police Officer. While gathering at the Outlaws Clubhouse, the officer made several drive-bys. As the 80 or so bikers headed toward Centennial Park, the officer passed them and turned on his lights. But wait, he was blocking traffic for them to pass and continued to do so to the park. A magical day, when the clubs and police cooperate for a good cause. At Fessler’s Lane, burgers, chips, beverages were available. The Saturns, Sam Hunter and Austin Valentine rocked the stage.

These young guys are a tremendous band, so keep an eye out for them in the future. They did a great job of entertaining the large crowd while they were waiting for the bike drawing. This is one of many super biker events held to help kids. Maybe motorcycle riders have a little bit of kid, in all of us. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper

Hidden Creek Resort I love finding cool little biker bars off the beaten path. The Late Rick Hoskins had a dream, Rick and his wife Mary bought an RV Resort in Springville just outside Paris TN on Kentucky Lake called Hidden Creek Resort. Rick also loved his motorcycles, so his dream was to build a place that all of his riding friends could come and hang out, listen to music, drink a cold beer, and eat some great smoked or grilled food so on the side of the RV Resort’s General Store, he built a biker bar. The first time I rode out there, a friend and I rode to Ashland City, and took Hwy. 49 from there to Dover. Hwy 49 is one of my favorite roads going west from Nashville. It has lots of 55mph curvy sections with straighter sections in between to catch your breath. It takes you through Charlotte, Vanleer, and Erin on the way to Dover. We crossed Kentucky Lake at Paris Landing on Hwy 79, in about 5 more miles turned left onto West Antioch Rd. and followed it to the resort. When you get there, they have a big concrete pad for bike parking, cars stay on the gravel. The biker bar part of the building is built so it can be opened when the weather allows, or closed and heated when it doesn’t. The hospitality is great, and when you walk in you are treated like an old friend, Rick may be gone, but you can still feel his influence, from the first time I met him it was like we’d known each other forever. Rick and Mary also won several Bar-B-Que competitions, and they are proud of the trophy’s lining the walls of the bar, and that’s the basis for the food. Sadly, Rick left us way too soon, but they still smoke and cook the way Rick and Mary always have. Now I’m a red blooded carnivore, so the first time I went, I had Smoked Meatloaf, Rick led me inside and asked Mary to show it to me in the pan, and it looks like a Meatloaf Island in a lake of cheese. It is delicious, and the homemade slaw is a bonus. I’ve also had the smoked bologna, and it is great as well. One thing I haven’t had yet, but plan to, Thursday night, year round is Porterhouse Steak Night. A 20 ounce porterhouse with baked potato and bread for $25. Steak night is RSVP only, because they have a limited number of steaks available, so call ahead. All of the food I’ve had there is great, but the menu changes, so you may want to call, or check them out on Facebook to see what’s on the smoker. Or do what most people do, just show up one weekend and enjoy whatever they have that day! You won’t be disappointed in the food, or the cool little hidden biker bar that’s off the beaten path. You can get more info about Hidden Creek Resort by visiting their Facebook Page or calling 731-641-0034. “Ride to Eat” will become a monthly column later this Spring, so if you have a place you think we should check out, let us know.

Santa: Every year, alll I ask for is a big fat bank account and a slim body. Yet again this year you mixed the two up, like you’ve done ever since I was 40 years old. Are you drinking too much of the Elves “special” Eggnog or what? A woman goes into the Bass Pro Shop to buy a rod and reel for her grandson’s birthday. She doesn’t know which one to get so she just grabs one and goes over to the counter. A Bass Pro Shop associate is standing there wearing dark shades. She says, “Excuse me, sir. Can you tell me anything about this rod and reel?” He says, “Ma’am, I’m completely blind; but if you’ll drop it on the counter, I can tell you everything from the sound it makes.” She doesn’t believe him but drops it on the counter anyway. He says, “That’s a six-foot Shakespeare graphite rod with a Zebco 404 reel and 10-LB. test line. It’s a good all-around combination and it’s on sale this week for only $40.00.” She says, “It’s amazing that you can tell all that just by the sound of it dropping on the counter. I’ll take it!” As she opens her purse, her credit card drops on the floor. Oh, that sounds like a Master Card,” he says. She bends down to pick it up and accidentally farts. At first she is really embarrassed, but then realizes there is no way the blind clerk could tell it was she who tooted. Being blind, he wouldn’t know that she was the only person around. The man rings up the sale and says, “That’ll be $54.50 please.” The woman is totally confused by this and asks, “Didn’t you tell me the rod and reel were on sale for $40.00? How did you get $54.50?” He replies, “Yes, Ma’am. The rod and reel is $40.00, but the Duck Call is $11.00 and the Bear Repellent is $3.50.” Little Becky was gifted a parrot that cussed like a drunken sailor. Tried as she might, she could not get the parrot to stop cussing so raunchy and acting out. Finally, after an all-day fight and lecture to the bird, Becky, in desperation, threw up her hands, grabbed the bird and stuck him in the freezer. For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked on the door. Then, suddenly there was total silence.Fearing that she’d hurt the parrot, Becky quickly opened the door to the freezer. The parrot calmly stepped out onto her outstretched arm and said “I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I’m sincerely remorseful for my “tude” and promise to be a good bird. Also, may I be so bold as to inquire what the turkey did wrong?

On the morning that Daylight Savings Time ended I stopped in to visit my aging friend, Bolo. He was busy covering his penis with black shoe polish. I said to him, “You better get your hearing checked buddy ...... You’re supposed to turn your clock back”. For the New Year, please note that condom makers do not guarantee “Safe Sex” by even a percentage anymore. Case in fact, a friend of mine was wearing one when he was shot 5 times by the woman’s husband that he was humping. A man wakes up in the hospital bandaged from head to foot. The doctor comes in and says, “Ah, I see you’ve regained consciousness. Now, you probably won’t remember, but you were in a huge pile-up on the freeway. You’re going to be okay, you’ll walk again and everything, however, your penis was severed in the accident and we couldn’t find it.” The man groans, but the doctor goes on, “You have $9000 in insurance compensation coming and we now have the technology to build a new penis. They work great but they don’t come cheap. It’s roughly $1000 an inch.” So, the doctor says, “You must decide how many inches you want. But understand that you have been married for over thirty years and this is something you should discuss with your wife. If you had a five incher before and get a nine incher now she might be a bit overwhelmed. If you had a nine incher before and you decide to only invest in a five incher now, she might be disappointed. It’s important that she plays a role in helping you make a decision.” The man agrees to talk it over with his wife. The doctor comes back the next day, “So, have you spoken with your wife?” “Yes I have,” says the man. “And has she helped you reach a decision?” “Yes” says the man. “What is your decision?” asks the doctor. “We’re getting granite counter tops.” Someone broke into my house last week. They didn’t take my TV, just the remote. Now they drive by and change the channels. Sick bastards!!! The Doctor asked a pregnant prostitute, “Do you know who the father is?” She promptly replied, “Hey, Doctor dumb ass, if you ate a can of beans would you know which one made you fart?!”

January 2016
by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley
Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: Welcome to 2016. It’s hard for me to believe we’ll be at 2020 in just a few years. Seems like just yesterday we were celebrating the change from 1999 to 2000 and being relieved that Y2K was a big fizzle. I still have a 250 gallon water tank in my basement that I bought to collect water because all the computers were supposed to go blank and shut down all American water pumping stations with the century change. The media swore that every computer would die immediately at midnight on the last day of December, 1999. I celebrated that new year’s eve by adding water to my favorite adult beverage and being convinced that when I got up on January 1st I’d be listening to football on the radio because the TV’s would die and having to drink my beverage straight because the computers would shut off my water. So what does this New Year have in store for us, the common, hard-working, motorcycle riding masses of America? Will ISIS start targeting our motorcycles? Will Donald Trump offer to allow motorcycle riders to mount machine guns for personal protection while he builds the wall on the border? Will Harley Davidson begin to mount collision avoidance systems on their motorcycles to comply with government mandated safety regulations and make motorcycles so expensive you have to lease them because they are too expensive to buy? Will the EPA ban campfires and bon fires at motorcycle rallies to get air pollution under control and tax the carbon used in rubber tires for extended mileage? Will the cost of leather go through the roof because the EPA makes raising cows illegal to reduce methane farting and stop global warming? Will they also ban beans so I don’t do the same thing? A few years ago I would have thought these things were just funny fantasies but every time I turn on a TV I get told something equally as loony by some babe in a tight sweater with a $400 hairdo on a national network. I’m not complaining about the tight sweater or the pretty hair but what is it about those that make us think there is
January 2016
serious thought going on under the hair? All you have to do is watch the nightly weather to know that there are people in the media who just say anything to keep you watching the TV. They don’t even care if they are right or not. Actually they seem to get more popular if they are wrong. What does it say about us when we keep watching them and believing them? If we are going to believe them shouldn’t we be wearing the tight sweater and giving a week’s pay to have our hair done? Did you make a New Year’s resolution? Is it one of those resolutions that you will hang with and then forget or one you are really serious about? I made a resolution this year to think about what I am seeing and what I watch on TV. I’ve decided that most of what is on TV is there to modify society and make it easier for the government to lead us away from self-reliance, deep thinking and adapt us to more government control. I resolve to question new laws, regulations and policies and try to understand why they are being put forward. Are they necessary or are they being pushed to transition my freedom into control by someone else? Our founding fathers created an American system that allowed individuals to pursue happiness. A system that allowed an individual to advance as far as they were willing and able to go. A system that allowed the freedom of worship and minimized government interference. “Of the people, by the people and for the people.” The government isn’t mentioned because it wasn’t for the government? Why is the government telling us we have to let people into this country who want to kill us? Why do we have to pay taxes on everything we need, use or have? Why do I have to get a license to do anything and how did the government get to the point it can take my money and give it to a foreign country? Why was gas almost $4 a gallon and now it’s under $2? I resolve to think about that and not buy any more water tanks just because someone in a tight sweater says the sky is falling. How about you??? Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. Bulldog * My monthly column reflects my personal point of view and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Publishers of this magazine, but they, like me, acknowledge the sacrifices made for the privilege of Freedom of Speech, therefore, they gratefully let me rant. Thank you for reading my rants. Hope my opinions don’t offend anyone, but, we all should be grateful for the right to have free opinions.

Bullet Points CARRYING YOUR FIREARM ON YOUR BIKE
Carrying a Firearm on your motorcycle can be a task in itself. Some of the things to think of when considering whether to bring you firearm with you when you’re heading out are, am I heading to a bar, can I carry my pistol with me safely, will I drop my pistol while riding, and why do I feel I need to have my pistol on me? TN being a permit to carry state makes it very important to go through the process of getting your permit before you carry either concealed in your jacket or belt, or openly. The first way to carry on a Scoot that comes to mind is a shoulder holster. This may be the most comfortable way to carry but not my personal favorite. If you like to carry in a shoulder holster I recommend a lot of practice dry drawing your firearm from its home. While your shoulder holster is probably the most comfortable it is probably the slowest draw. If you choose to carry your pistol in your waist belt (which is my personal favorite) there are so many cool holsters out there to choose from. I am a fan of what is comfortable to you. That is most important, so that you actually carry your pistol. If you have a holster in mind try it out before you buy it. This is one case you may want to make an in person purchase and not an online one. When you pick the holster you like wear it for a few minutes. I am a fan of gun stores with Ranges. With an indoor or outdoor range you can try the holster out, make sure it fits you correctly, and see how well it holds your pistol in place. If you pick a holster without active retention, make sure it is a holster that is specific to your gun and fits snugly and has good passive retention, the last thing you want to see is your gun hitting the highway and bouncing down the road.
30
Last but not least, how do you lock your pistol up when you’re at a bar or posted business? I am not a fan of taking your gun into a bar. The last thing you want to do is get into any trouble with the management or law enforcement. It is important if you are going to carry in a bar please be responsible and don’t drink and carry. So if you cant or don’t carry in a bar what can you do with your pistol when you are enjoying your evening? I personally don’t leave my pistol in my Street Glide bags just behind the one lock. There are several options to lock your pistol up while you enjoy an evening with your friends and family. You can lock the trigger on your gun, or you can use a lock box in your bike. Simple things like a pelican case, small lock box, or Harley specific box can save you money and hassle. With a small lock box you will then have two locks keeping your firearm safe. There are no right or wrong ways to carry your gun as long as you are safe doing it. As motorcycle enthusiast it is our responsibility to leave a good impression wherever we go. Shooting can be a great sport to connect with your young ones, spouse, or friends. Riding out to shoot makes a memorable day that will be a great memory for years to come. THE AIM/NCOM MOTORCYCLE E-NEWS SERVICE is brought to you by Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM), and is sponsored by the Law Offices of Richard M. Lester. If you’ve been involved in any kind of accident, call us at 1-(800) ON-A-BIKE or visit www.ON-ABIKE.com. NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) HIGHWAY BILL SIGNED INTO LAW Passed by the House 359-65 on Thursday afternoon, December 3rd, and approved by the Senate 83-16 later that same day, a long-awaited longterm highway funding bill has been signed into law by President Barack Obama, marking big gains for the nation’s infrastructure and America’s motorcyclists, among others. Overwhelmingly approved by Congress a day before current funding expired, the 1,300-page five-year $305 billion measure increases federal money for transportation infrastructure projects around the country, addressing our aging and congested highways and bridges after years of stymied efforts. The legislation, dubbed “Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act”, takes effect immediately and represents a 25% increase in federal funds committed to surface transportation infrastructure. In addition, the good news for motorcyclists is that the new Highway Bill prohibits the Department of Transportation from awarding grants to local and state governments for motorcycle-only checkpoint programs, effectively preventing such discriminatory roadblocks; Reinstates the Motorcycle Advisory Council (MAC) to advise the federal government on infrastructure issues of concern to motorcyclists; Funds motorcycle safety grants and distracted driving programs, and makes it easier for states to qualify; Establishes privacy and security measures in infrastructure technologies and data retrieval; and Continues funding for off-highway recreation.
FEDS INCREASE ETHANOL LEVELS The federal government has substantially increased the mandated amount of ethanol to be used in America’s gasoline next year, from 16.93 billion gallons in 2015 to 18.11 billion gallons in 2016, harkening widespread availability of higher-ethanol fuel blends, such as E15, which can damage motorcycle engines and void manufacturer warranties. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the increase as part of the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), which mandates the volume of renewable fuels that must be blended into the nation’s fuel supply each year. E15, which is a fuel blend of 15% ethanol, has not been approved by the EPA for use in any of the estimated 22 million motorcycles and ATVs in the U.S., and Congress has considered measures calling for further study of ethanol and its effect on internal combustion engines. Meanwhile, many motorcycle and automobile organizations, among others, continue to lobby against ethanol, not just because its unapproved use can damage fuel systems and internal engine parts, reduce power and mileage, and invalidate warranties, but opponents 34
also argue that ethanol pollutes more than the oil it’s meant to replace, takes more energy to produce than it delivers, drives up cost and scarcity of food resources, doesn’t reduce our oil-dependency, and the government subsidies being paid for ethanol production diverts funds that could improve our highways, bridges and infrastructure. HONDA AND BMW PLEDGE TO ADDRESS GLOBAL WARMING As 150 Heads of State and Government convened in Paris, France at the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, with a goal to “reach a new universal climate agreement that is applicable to all,” the hope is that some arrangement can be reached to help reduce carbon emissions worldwide and keep global warming from exceeding a two degree Celsius rise in the coming years. Emissions legislation and the transition to cleaner energy, both of which are included as strategies toward curbing climate change, have obvious impacts on the motorcycle industry. Europe, for example, has set some of the most stringent emissions standards on motorcycles with further restrictions forthcoming. Further changes are likely to be seen in the U.S. as well, in part because of the pledges two motorcycle companies have made in accord with strategies outlined by the White House in Paris. American Honda Motor Company and the BMW Group are now involved in efforts to address global warming, both companies signing the American Business Act on Climate Pledge. In a press release issued November 30, 2015, by the White House, 154 companies are cited as having signed the pledge, each offering company-specific strategies to combat climate change. American Honda and BMW are currently the only two motorcycle OEMs to sign the following pledge: “We applaud the growing number of countries that have already set ambitious targets for climate action. In this context, we support the conclusion of a climate change agreement in Paris that takes a strong step forward toward a low-carbon, sustainable future. We recognize that delaying action on climate change will be costly in economic and human terms, while accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy will produce multiple benefits with regard to sustainable economic growth, public health, resilience to natural disasters, and the health of the global environment.” CHILDRENS ADVOCATES DENIED ACCESS TO COURTHOUSE OVER CLUB COLORS The New Mexico Motorcycle Rights Organization (NMMRO) is helping address an issue where a group called the Guardians of the Children, a nonprofit organization of child abuse advocates comprised of motorcyclists, is being denied access to the courthouse unless they remove their motorcycle vests as instructed by the Bernalillo Sheriffs Department. The patches on these vests help identify themselves to the children and families they are supporting. Along with this, many of the members have received rude and uncalled for treatment by several of the officers. GOC President Frank Montano and NMMRO Chairperson Annette Torrez (also a member of the NCOM Board of Directors) met with Sheriff Manny Gonzales along with several officers to discuss the matter. “Sheriff Gonzales received us well, listened to our concerns and apologized for the treatment of the deputies,” reports Torrez. He asked them to report any negative actions from the deputies to their internal affairs division

owners, are women. Among Boomer owners, women make up 9%.
As for the removal of the vest, the Supreme Court says; individuals have the first amendment right to wear clothing which displays writings or designs in a courthouse. There are several cases specific to motorcycle club colors, states the NMMRO. Recent Federal Case Law confirms motorcycle organization patches and club colors as a protected expression. A U.S. District Court this past September, relying on Supreme Court precedent, concluded that the government may not impose restrictions on an individual solely because of displaying membership in a motorcycle club. Citing 1985 and 1971 U.S. Supreme Court cases on First Amendment rights states it is not reasonable to prohibit speech in courthouse hallways merely because it may offend someone.
The Owner Survey also revealed what type of bikes women prefer. Cruisers are the choice of 34% of female riders. Scooters rank a close second at 33%, followed by sport bikes at 10%. In the survey, of some 48,000 American households, women were also asked to share their top three reasons for riding motorcycles. They answered “fun and recreation,” followed by “sense of freedom” and “enjoy outdoors/nature.” When it comes to purchasing a motorcycle, women rate “Fuel Economy” and “Test Rides” as the most important decision-making factors.
“Sheriff Gonzales suggested we now make an appointment with the Chief Justice where we will address the violation of our 1st Amendment concerning this issue or any ban on motorcycle patches and attire in the court house,” said Torrez, who also told TV stations KRQE Channel 13 and Channel 7 KOAT in interviews that; “It is the people’s court and our house and the government may not impose restrictions on an individual solely because of displaying membership in a motorcycle club or organization.” MORE FEMALE RIDERS THAN EVER Motorcycle ownership by women has doubled over the past decade, and female ridership is now at an all-time high. Today, women riders account for 14% of all U.S. motorcycle owners, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council’s latest Motorcycle Owner Survey, well up from the 8% reported in 1998. “Women continue to embrace motorcycling like never before,” said Sarah Schilke, national marketing manager of BMW Motorrad USA and chair of PowerLily, a group consisting of female motorcycle industry professionals. “Of the 9.2 million owners, more of them are women than we’ve ever recorded. In fact, the number of female owners better than doubled from 2003 to 2014. And, among the more than 30 million Americans who swung a leg over a motorcycle and rode at least one time in 2014, a quarter of these riders were women.” Among younger generations of owners, the percentage of women is even higher. Slightly more than 17% of Gen X owners, and 17.6% of Gen Y January 2016
The study revealed that female riders are safety-conscious. While 60% of women took a motorcycle safety course, only 42% of men had any formal training. In some state motorcycle safety training programs, women make up 30% of the student population. Other key survey results: The median age for female motorcyclists is 39 versus 48 for males; 49% are married; 47% have a college degree; New bikes are preferred over used by 57% of female riders; and 49% of women motorcyclists take care of their own maintenance. WEIRD NEWS: SAUDI PRINCE “GAMER” HAS WOMEN RACING MOTORCYCLES Although the women of Saudi Arabia are not authorized to take the wheel, in a new video game designed by Arab royalty, they ride motorcycles as they race through destroyed and corrupted lands. The smartphone game called “Saudi Girls Revolution” (SGR) was created by His Highness Prince Fahad Al-Saud, the grandson of the Saudi Arabia king’s brother. He’s got an occidental culture, studied at Stanford University, worked at Facebook on the launch of the Arabic version and has lived in Los Angeles and London and has founded several companies including NA3M Games, the company behind “Saudi Girls Revolution.” Will a video game help the fight for more relaxed laws for all women living in the Arabic world? Saudi Arabian women have been fighting for their right to drive for decades, but now they can at least imagine being one of the 8 ladies of the game riding at full speed under dark clouds in a post-apocalyptic Kingdom through hostile landscapes, fighting against brutal tyrants with their abayas in the wind.
