HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM
W
THUNDER ROADS® TENNESSEE!
ELCOME TO THE first issue of 2019! We made it through the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, and hope you have too! As we move into 2019, we want to take this opportunity to thank the many people who supported us during 2018, the people we couldn’t do this without. So to you our awesome readers, our wonderful advertisers, our talented correspondents, our hard working sales reps, our amazing photographers and our incredibly gifted GDA! We hope 2019 brings you much happiness, success and of course safe and enjoyable riding. We’ve all been on a well-earned (well, we think so) break, but we’ve been working on some great new things to bring you in 2019. Of course we’ll continue to bring you all the latest motorcycle news and upcoming events in the most accurate way we know how, and all the features you enjoy. And after the feedback we received from you – our readers – we’re going to start bringing you some new material. We’re going to try and focus more this year on places to ride, roads, areas, and routes. We’re also working on bringing you more information to help you become a better rider, no matter what level you’re at right now, its information you can trust too. It’s that time of the year again. 2018 is over and the New Year’s resolution posts on Facebook and Instagram are about to start flooding your timelines. Maybe you or someone you know is planning to quit smoking, hit the gym, drink less – the list can go on. These resolutions usually don’t last long. What about for us motorcycle riders though? If you’re passionate about riding, then it’ll be easier to follow through on your resolutions. You shouldn’t have to wait until the 1st of January to try something new or make a commitment, but since that’s what we all do, let’s make some anyway. Maybe you plan on washing your motorcycle more regularly (Scott), or do regular maintenance, ride more often, plan a motorcycle trip, get a second motorcycle, buy more presents for your bike, or become a better rider. Perhaps you have your resolutions ready to go that aren’t on this list. What are your motorcycling New Year resolutions? Whatever you do, try to just ride more: time in the saddle is time well spent! May all you dare to dream of come true for you, and may you have many safe and enjoyable rides with clear skies, good roads, and great friends. We thank each and every one of you and ask you pick up a magazine every month and stay tuned to our newsletters, website and social media for our latest events, news, developments, and impacts in 2019. And please make sure that you visit our loyal advertisers that allow us to keep printing this magazine free to you and support those advertisers that support us. We are GRATEFUL for each and every one of our Advertisers! Without them, this magazine would not be possible. Best wishes for 2019 from the Thunder Roads® Tennessee team. GOD'S GIFT Sometimes we read God’s Word just like we would read a secular book, reading over the words but never receiving the revelation knowledge that God intended for us to have. Let’s take a closer look at Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given and the government shall be upon His shoulders: “Unto us” makes it very personal, all of Israel was going through some hard times, the coming Messiah was their hope, all their grief, problems and their salvation would “rest upon His shoulders.” No one understood why God sent a “Child” and not a warring angel to clean this mess up. But Jesus needed to have the full human experience, to be able to be our “Kinsmen Redeemer.” Thus “Unto us a child is born.” Whatever painful emotional scars you have, Jesus also went through in order to set us free. Heb.2:16 “… He took not on Him the nature of Angels; but He took on Him the seed of Abraham” (flesh). Heb. 4:15 “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feelings of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” You think you were born on the wrong side of the track, maybe in the hood? Well Jesus was born in a barn. You think that you never had a chance, Jesus was on the run for the first two years of His life because there was always someone wanting to kill Him. You think your family’s reputation follows you wherever you go, Jesus’ mother got pregnant before she was legally married. This followed Jesus every day of His life. “Unto us a son is given.” Not just any son but the Son of God. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son.” Father God was so in love with us that He wanted to experience our world through our flesh. Gal. 3:29 “If ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according the promise.” Gal. 4:5 “…that we might receive the adoption of Sons.” Vs. 6 “Because ye are Sons…ye may cry Abba Father” (calling God Daddy)
January 2019
Vs. 7 “Thou art no more a servant but a Son; and if a Son, then an heir of God through Christ.” In the Jewish culture, an adopted child had more rights than a blood born child. The blessings of Abraham are ours, we now have covenant rights with almighty God, whatever belongs to God, now belongs to us and whatever belongs to us should belong to God. You need to know who you are, who’s you are, and what you are according to the Word of God. If you are a born again believer, then you are not your past sins and mistakes. If you think negative about yourself, you’ll make negative mistakes. Think positive about yourself, you chose to read this article, you chose to be in God’s house, you chose to read God’s word and you chose to pray, focus on your positive choices. Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

Bullet Points ALTERNATIVE HOME DEFENSE OPTIONS
G
OOD EVENING fellow bikers! By the time you read this article, the Christmas and New Year’s holidays will be past us. That being said, I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday season and I wish you a prosperous 2019! Hopefully you will have plenty of time behind the handlebars this year. I have written a great deal during the past several years about concealed carry and self-defense when you are away from home. Obviously, you will be most likely to need to defend yourself when you away from your castle. When you are at your home, you should be able to feel more relaxed and comfortable than anywhere else. But evil can come knocking, so never let your awareness lapse even when you are sitting in your favorite recliner sipping a cold Moscow Mule! When I am at home, I always have a pistol nearby. Sometimes it is even in my holster on my waist! Fortunately, the self-defense laws in Tennessee will help protect you in the event you need to use deadly force while you are within the boundaries of your property – and especially if you are inside your house, garage or other outbuildings. The most important thing to keep in mind, from a legal standpoint, is self-defense against people who you share your home with. If you need to protect yourself from another resident of your house, you need to be facing an imminent threat which could cause you death, grave harm or debilitating injuries. If someone else is in your house illegally, or is a guest, and threatening you, the law in Tennessee should protect you. While much has been written about Castle Doctrine, there are exceptions. You will want to be able to answer these questions in the affirmative (which will be used by the legal system): • Ability – Is the attacker able to hurt you? • Opportunity - Can the attacker get to you? • Jeoparday – Does the attacker, who has ability and opportunity, intend to illegally use this force against you. If you can answer yes to these questions, you have a legal self-defense claim against anyone in your home – including family. If the person is in your house illegally, Castle Doctrine will protect you. Castle Doctrine also protects you anywhere on your property, but I would still recommend you can answer the Ability, Opportunity and Jeopardy questions in the affirmative before you use lethal force outside your home. Now that you know the potential legal pitfalls of self-defense in your home, what are the best choice of weapons for self-defense inside the confines of your home? If the situation allows, use non-lethal force. Tasers would be the most obvious choice here, but a baton or baseball bat may also work. Keep in mind, that while these two weapons would usually be considered less than lethal, if you use them to lethal effect, and the attacker is a resident or family member, you will still need to be able to answer the self-defense questions previously listed. While this column usually revolves around a handgun being the lethal weapon of choice for self-defense, when you are in your home there are several other choices which may be better suited.
January 2019
SHOTGUN You have read this before in my columns – a shotgun is the best defensive weapon you can have in your home. Period. Keeping a loaded shotgun next to your bed is the most effective defensive tool you can own. Obviously, you will want to keep all firearms locked in a safe if you have children in your home, but those of you with no children – or the empty nesters like me – can be confident with a loaded shotgun next to the bed. An added bonus of a shotgun is that the mere sound of it cycling may well send your intruder running. However, if you do need to use it, it can easily penetrate inside doors and does not need to be aimed as much as pointed.
SPORTING/TACTICAL RIFLE Rifles are not always at the top of someone’s list when considering a home defense firearm, but they are incredibly effective if they are of carbine size. They are easy to handle, and they provide plenty of ammunition if you have multiple intruders. But one serious drawback is over-penetration. If your tactical rifle shoots 5.56 or 7.62 ammunition, they will easily penetrate several walls (even exterior walls) after they have taken care of the bad guy. Plus, since these rifles fire well beyond the speed of sound, it is very likely you will seriously damage your hearing, and anyone else’s who might be home when you discharge it indoors. For this reason, my next tactical rifle will be chambered in .300 Blackout and I will have a suppressor for the barrel. With subsonic ammunition, this configuration will be quiet. The loudest sound you will likely hear will be the action of the rifle as it cycles the next round into the chamber. A carbine in this caliber would be a fantastic home defense firearm. The biggest consideration for this rig would be waiting for the tax stamp to legally buy the suppressor. It can take nearly a year, unless you have already established a family trust. After these two options, the handgun is the next best choice. If your preferred caliber is super-fast, like .357 SIG, .357 MAG or .41 MAG, make sure you have the gun loaded with quality hollow points. If you were to have it loaded with full metal jacket rounds, over penetration is once again going to be an issue. Besides shooting straight through the bad guy, likely not immediately incapacitating him, your projectile may well go through the next several rooms before it stops, potentially hitting other family members. Until next month, keep your face in the wind and the shiny side up! Molon Labe, Mike Noirot Michael.Noirot@me.com Note: This column does not provide legal advice!

RIDER SAFETY
WELCOME 2019 AND MORE WOMEN RIDERS
I
f you’ve been noticing motorcycle riders the last few years, you have probably seen more women riding. What a wonderful thing! I consider myself to be one of the truly blessed women whose father gave her a motorcycle at a very early age. Dad probably got a lot of grief for that since it certainly was not the norm to give your little girl a motorcycle for her 4th birthday. I still give him hugs and thank him for that super special birthday gift. The experiences and adventures on my motorcycles over the past forty-six years have been some of the best of my life. I wouldn’t even want to think of a day without my motorcycles, couldn’t even imagine it. I have been fortunate to coach many motorcycle safety courses for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and HarleyDavidson Riding Academy over the years. It was just normal to have a class full of men. Every so often I would have a class with one, maybe two women. In mid 2017 and throughout 2018 I have been witnessing a change. Almost every class had at least one female rider. Some classes were 50% female! Yet again, what a wonderful thing! The change that I, and other coaches have seen, is reflected in some new statistics from the Motorcycle Industry Council (MCI). If you haven’t heard of the MCI, it is a not-for-profit national trade association supporting motorcyclists in the United States. The MCI has been around since 1914 and is based in California. Looking back to 1998, about 8% of motorcycle riders were women. By 2015, this percentage had increased to 14%. In November 2018, the percentage of women riders grew to 19%. So, approximately 1 in every 6 motorcyclists is female. The median age of a female motorcyclist is 39 years old. (For men, it is 49 years old.) How many motorcyclists are there in the United States anyway? The Department of Transportation gives us an approximation of 8,410,255 registered motorcycles in the United States. To make this number more meaningful that would be about 1 out of every 36 registered drivers is riding a motorcycle. Doing some math, that would lead us to believe that about 1.5 million motorcycles are registered to women. Let’s take into consideration that this number is deceiving. I have 2 registered motorcycles and there are women who have their motorcycle registered in their
January 2019
husband’s names. So, accuracy of reported numbers may be open to discussion. One may agree or disagree with statistics and numbers provided by different not-for-profit and government agencies. But, I can certainly say from my experience that the trend of female riders is continuing to increase. When I travel to the Motor Maids conventions, we will have 400+ female riders in attendance from all over the United States and Canada, this is a fraction of our growing membership that is at 1300 members strong. Visit the Motor Maids website for more information at https://www.motormaidsinc.org. At the 1st Annual Women Rock Rally hosted by Bumpus Harley-Davidson in Murfreesboro in October, we were 145 female riders. These are just two examples of organizations and events for female riders. I love having women of all ages come to motorcycle safety classes with that spark of adventure in their eyes and seeing women riding their motorcycles with the love of the ride shining on their faces. As I welcome 2019, I look forward to seeing even more women in motorcycle safety classes and on the road experiencing the joys that can only be found on two wheels. I wish you a very Happy New Year, invite you to join the growing number of women riding motorcycles and offer the reminder that Safe Riding starts with you. Donna, along with being an avid riding enthusiast, is a MSF motorcycle safety coach for the state of Tennessee and a Harley-Davidson Riding Academy Coach. She is a member of the Motor Maids, H.O.G. and Ladies of Harley. Visit her website at https://lipstickandleather.life.

TECH TIPS
I
COLD WEATHER RIDING
By Thunder Roads Reader, Stoney
t is often said that experience is the best teacher. I have recently experienced cold weather riding. From my perspective it was a test of wills and nature proved to have the stronger will. In my opinion, I was dressed appropriately for the ride. I wore: Layered clothing under my leather jacket (I don’t have electric heated riding apparel). Rain suit pants (added lower-body protection from the wind). A full-face helmet. A fleece neck protector. Insulated leather riding gloves. Even with all that protection, I still felt the effects of the cold temperatures on my feet, toes, fingers, and legs. Cruising at highway speed(s) of 65 to 75 mph; the wind-chill factor becomes a real force to be dealt with. The wind, at any speed, moving across the body will rob body heat quite rapidly even when there is very little exposed skin. That fact brings hypothermia into the “mix” of things to be aware of. Hypothermia comes on slowly and sometimes without the rider being aware of it until the dangerous effects start affecting coordination, speech, attention, and reaction time. Fortunately for me, I remembered what to be aware of as far as the signs of hypothermia setting in. Another concern is frostbite. The fingers and toes are at risk, even when they are covered. Anything that affects blood circulation, like movement restricting gloves, socks, and boots, can make frostbite a real hazard to your
January 2019
health if it goes untreated and/or ignored. Again, being aware of what the body is telling you can save your life and/or avoid permanent physical damage. Taking warm-up breaks along with re-fueling stops can be a very important safety factor when riding in cold weather. Performing a pre-ride inspection will reduce the likelihood of a break-down along the way. Being stranded on the side of the road in cold weather could be life threatening if the conditions are not in your favor. I have adopted the practice of performing a pre-ride inspection for my own safety. It’s also a matter of respect and concern for my fellow riders. Yet another factor is fatigue. Fatigue is as much of a health and safety issue in cold weather as it is hot weather. I began feeling the effects of fatigue on the return trip. “I just want to get home and warm up” was a constant thought. Things like that take away some of your concentration from the task at hand. Not a good thing! That is when accidents happen. Taking a rest-stop might prove to be beneficial to safely completing the trip. An added consideration would be to have a snack and something to drink. It’ll give you a chance to mentally “pull it together” before you get back on the road. I did not write or intend this article to scare and/or deter anybody away from riding in cold weather or any other weather as far as that goes. Hey, any day can be a good day to get out on two-wheels… if it is done safely. Nobody, that I am aware of, buys a Harley to look at. It was made to ride! Anyway, speaking from experience… having a healthy respect for the forces of nature is a very good practice if you want to “live to ride” again!

IN MEMORY OF
MIKE FLANNING
A
By Bob “Bulldog” Ousley
celebration of life motorcycle ride and gathering took place on November 17, 2018 for lifelong biker, father, friend and co-worker Michael R. Fanning. Mike was born October 28, 1949 and passed on November 7, 2018. He worked at Boswell’s Harley-Davidson on Fessler’s Lane in Nashville and was at work on his last day. The list of jobs he held during his life include managing Frugal MacDougal’s, first manager of Boswell’s Harley-Davidson in Cookeville, TN, parts department at Boswell’s in Nashville and a variety of other jobs that benefited from Mike’s intellect, sense of humor and ability to get the job done. His daughter Laura Fanning-Brawner highlighted Mikes love for the biker community, biker’s, motorcycles, cigars, sports, hot car’s, bike events like Big Sturgis and an occasional nip of good whiskey. Laura and Mike were working on a stronger father/daughter relationship and the importance of making the most of family relationships while you can. In his younger years he played football and baseball and as he got older loved competing at shuffle board. Mike’s ex-wife and friend, Nancy Boyd said, “Mike’s idea of a winter date was riding the motorcycle to a coffee shop. His early motorcycles included a Honda 150, a Kawasaki, a Triumph with a self-oiling chain and a long list of Harley’s. On one of Mike and Nancy’s rides she wore a bright yellow sweater and when they stopped the Triumph’s self oiler had thrown a strip of chain oil up Nancy’s back. She said when you were with Mike you just had to accept things like that and said they had a good laugh over it. Bubba Boswell related that Mike had been the Executive Director of the Music City Harley Owners Group (HOG) chapter two times and was a big advocate for HOG, Harley-Davidson and Boswell’s and rode his Harley to work almost every day. He was the first to get started in the morning and the first to leave in the afternoon but would do anything to help someone. Mike was the example of biker’s having big hearts and being part of the close knit biker community. He loved being around other bikers. Bubba said as long as he knew Mike he was always hopping up his Harley, adding more horsepower, torque and putting more stuff on his bike but when he got on the highway he cruised about 55mph. That was just Mike!! He disliked computers, looked up parts in catalogs, was quick with one liners and made you smile with his dirty jokes. Co-workers loved and respected Mike and knew they’d get Mike’s view on a subject. He had a view on everything and was a “GoTo” guy. Most of the staff at Thunder Roads Magazine of Tennessee knew and appreciated Mike Fanning. He will be missed and his memory will be part of everyone who knew him. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Hickman County Humane Society. If you look in the sky and see a streak, it’s probably Mike hot rodding and slinging chain oil in the heavens. Ride in peace brother, your road is clear and trouble free.

MOTORCYCLE RACING IS MAKING A COMEBACK IN TENNESSEE
M
By Scott High
ost of you have probably heard the old saying, “The first motorcycle race happened right after they built the second motorcycle.” There is probably a lot of truth to that. There is something about motorcycle racing that draws you in, the speed, the sounds, the smells, the skill of the riders, the danger, whatever it is, if there’s more than one bike and an appropriate place to do it, there is probably going to be a race. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally started as a gathering to watch a race and later they added a hillclimb, Daytona Bike Week started as the Daytona 200, Laconia Bike Week started as a gathering for a race as did the Hollister Motorcycle rally. As long as there have been bikes there have been races. And as long as there have been races, bikers have shown up to watch and have a good time doing it. Tennessee has a long history with motorcycle
16
ThunderRoadsTennessee.com
races of all kinds. We have a long history of off road racing that continues today, most every weekend during the season there are off road races from woods races to motocross, the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship has been held at Loretta Lyn’s ranch for so long it’s know in the motocross world simply as Loretta’s, there was even an AMA pro motocross race near Blountville at Muddy Creek Raceway until this year. The Nashville Fairgrounds racetrack was originally a one mile dirt oval and regularly held motorcycle races, and all across the state most towns had a dirt track, some had board tracks, and most have had bikes racing on them at some point. Over the years most of those dirt tracks have become more and more tailored to car racing with banked turns and/or asphalt, and motorcycle racing was pushed out mostly due to lack of suitable tracks. Motorcycle racing is going through a resurgence in Tennessee. It’s a grassroots effort with no big corporate sponsorships, just people with a love of
January 2019
racing starting races. The Buffalo Valley Hillclimb started several years ago with an AMA Pro Hillclimb, the next year they added 2 separate amateur Hillclimbs to the annual AMA Pro event, and a couple of years later they hosted the first ever Tennessee State Amateur Hillclimb Championships. 2018 saw the event host the Cookeville Motorcycle classic, a weekend full of racing with flat track racing on Friday night, and both pro and amateur hillclimb events Saturday and Sunday. Now the Buffalo Valley Hillclimb has now grown to the point that Middle Tennessee Dragway, the venue for the Buffalo Valley Hillclimb, will host the 2019 AMA Hillclimb Grand Championship, the nation’s premier amateur hillclimb championship. The best of the best amateur hillclimbers from all across the country will be at the Middle Tennessee Dragway July 26-28 to compete for AMA #1 plates in several classes, as well as awards for AMA Hillclimb Racer of the Year, AMA Vet/Senior Hillclimb Racer of the Year and AMA Youth Hillclimb Racer of the Year. Hillclimbs aren’t the only races making a comeback in Tennessee, flat track racing is growing here also. Last year the TN State HOG Rally featured flat track races near Maryville, and for the last few years there have been races in Shelbyville. Hooligan flat track racing is
January 2019
growing in popularity too, Hooligan flat track is street legal bikes 750cc’s or bigger with stock frames and 19” front wheels. It’s taking racing back to its roots when you could ride your bike to the track, take a few parts off and race, and if you were lucky or good (or both) enough you could put the parts back on and ride it home. Some of the shops around the state, Boswell’s H-D, Bumpus H-D, and Smoky Mountain H-D come to mind, all sponsor Hooligan racing teams. Like the Buffalo Valley Hillclimbs, the Lynchburg Flat track held at the Calsonic Arena and the TN Walking Horse Celebration grounds has grown. What started as one race has turned in to several a year, and last year the first ever “Celebration of Speed”, a weekend long event with music, vendors and both indoor “short track” racing, and outdoor racing in the walking horse arena took place. The next event for Lynchburg Flat Track Racing will be March 1st and 2nd in Shelbyville, be sure to check it out. Grassroots racing is making a comeback in Tennessee, and if you haven’t caught some of the action you don’t know what you are missing. We’ll keep you informed of the upcoming races this year so be sure to pick up a copy of Thunder Roads Tennessee every month to keep up with the action.

DODGING THE ROADKILL
RIDING WITH OLD MAN WINTER
O
By: Hank Bonecutter
ne of the best things about sharing this journey through my blog is the INCREDIBLE people I’ve met and will continue to meet. I LOVE hearing your stories and suggestions about YOUR biker journey. Living in the south presents a different kind of winter. We have days we can ride, but we might go weeks before we get a couple of days to do so. Some of the brothers and sisters I meet here live in parts of the country where the winters are BRUTAL! So what do we do during these cold winter months? One of the things I hear most often is bikers doing annual maintenance on their bike. Some of you have told me that you will take your motorcycle completely apart, clean and shine each piece, then replace fluids and check brake pads and so on. I TOTALLY admire those of you who can do that. After all, where you live you are NOT going to do any riding during the winter. In fact, SOME of you tell me that your winter is so harsh, you wrap and store your bike. NOW THAT’S SOME COLD ASS WINTER! Some of you have shared that you live in parts of the country where you can ride year round. Now THAT’S what I’m talking about. I love hearing about the places you go and the sites you see, and it’s the middle of January. I would LOVE to live in that part of the country. I had one brother tell me that during the winter, he rearranges his garage, does inventory on his tools and supplies, then helps other bikers do maintenance on their bike. The one pattern I
January 2019
see in all of this is that we MUST be near the motorcycle at all times or we just get a bad case of the “winter doldrums!” I realize that there’s a million ways to stay busy when you can’t ride, but it does get a little frustrating, (for me at least) when you can’t ride for days until the weather breaks. I’ve finally come through a nasty cold I’ve had for a couple of weeks, and just today as I was running errands (not on the bike) I noticed several brothers out riding. It was a beautiful sunny day, 3844 degrees. If I weren’t worried about a relapse, I would have been out too! This winter, when I can’t ride, I’ve been working on the draft of a book I’m writing about my broadcasting career. I’ve threatened to do this for years and with loads of encouragement, I’ve finally put together an outline and will hopefully get a few chapters done this winter. I’m not a mechanic, but I have OCD, so my area of the garage is clean as a whistle. My “beast” is also shiny as a new quarter. My towels are neatly stacked. My cleaning solutions are perfectly arranged and so on. That’s the best I can do. What do you do during the cold and snowy winter months? How do you fill the void that’s missing when you can’t ride? I would love to hear your stories. Be sure to follow me on Facebook. I’m also on Instagram @ dodgetheroadkill. Thanks for following my journey. Hug your loved ones. Be an encouragement to others and remember, love one another and enjoy the ride!

U.S. Senate passes motorcyclist anti-profiling resolution by unanimous consent Survey: Half of motorcyclists say they have been profiled by law enforcement
PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The American Motorcyclist Association expresses its deep appreciation to the U.S. Senate, which adopted a resolution Tuesday promoting awareness of motorcyclist profiling and encouraging collaboration and communication with the motorcycling community and law enforcement officials to prevent instances of profiling. Senate Res. 154 also urges state law enforcement officials to condemn motorcyclist profiling in their policies and training materials. Senate resolutions do not have the force of law. “In 2015, Congress wisely acted to ban federal highway funding for motorcycle-only checkpoints, recognizing that federal funds are better spent on promoting highway safety for all vehicles and drivers,” said AMA Vice President of Government Relations Wayne Allard. “Now, the Senate has taken a big step further to help end the discriminatory and ineffective practice of profiling motorcyclists.” The bipartisan resolution, sponsored by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), was cosponsored by Sens. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), Michael D. Crapo (R-Idaho), Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Angus King (I-Maine), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska). As adopted, the resolution recognizes the significant increase in motorcycle registrations during the past 20 years, and points
January 2019
out that half of motorcyclists surveyed believe they have been profiled by law enforcement at least once. The resolution also acknowledges that motorcyclist profiling occurs across the nation. Profiling means the illegal use of the fact that a person rides a motorcycle or wears motorcycle-related apparel as a factor when law enforcement officers decide to stop and question, take enforcement action, arrest or search a person or vehicle with or without a legal basis. In January 2017, the AMA Board of Directors adopted a formal position statement on motorcyclist profiling, see www. americanmotorcyclist.com/About-The-AMA/motorcyclist-profiling. The AMA continues to recommend law enforcement and highway officials focus their efforts on encouraging highway safety in ways that make America’s roads safer for everyone. NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)
U.S. SENATE TAKES A STAND AGAINST POLICE PROFILING OF MOTORCYCLISTS The United States Senate has approved the Motorcycle Profiling Resolution (Senate Resolution 154) without amendment by unanimous consent on Dec 11, addressing concerns of motorcyclists across the country regarding law enforcement discriminating against bikers in traffic stops, citations and arrests. This bipartisan and bicameral resolution (H.Res. 318 companion in the House) could provide a national solution to the discriminatory profiling of motorcyclists over mode of transportation or style of dress in enforcing the law. Several states have considered bills to prohibit police from profiling motorcyclists, and Washington became the first state to pass such an anti-profiling law in 2011, followed by Maryland in 2016. The two companion measures in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, which are nonbinding and do not have the force of law, seek to curb profiling of motorcycle riders at the federal level by “Promoting awareness of motorcycle profiling and encouraging collaboration and communication with the motorcycle community and law enforcement officials to prevent instances of profiling.” S.Res. 154 and H.Res. 318 also “urges State law enforcement officials to include statements condemning motorcycle profiling in written policies and training materials.” U.S. Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) spearheaded the measure in the Senate, and recently tweeted; “Pleased the Senate passed S.Res. 154 to encourage states to take steps to prevent profiling of #motorcycle riders. Hopefully this will lead to more efforts to raise awareness of and address motorcycle profiling.” As defined by the Congressional resolutions, “motorcycle profiling” means “the illegal use of the fact that a person rides a motorcycle or wears motorcycle related apparel as a factor in deciding to stop and question, take enforcement action, arrest, or search a person or vehicle with or without legal basis under the Constitution of the United States.” Concerned riders are now urged to contact their Congressional delegations in the U.S. House of Representatives and encourage them to join their Senate colleagues by likewise passing House Resolution 318. GOVERNMENT WINS FIRST ROUND IN TRIAL TO SEIZE MONGOLS PATCH For over a decade, federal law enforcement authorities have been testing a unique legal tactic to take down the Mongols Motorcycle Club by seizing their trademarked logo under asset forfeiture laws, and now a federal jury in Santa Ana, California has found the Mongols guilty of racketeering and conspiracy, setting up a second phase of the trial during which the government will seek to seize control of the club’s “intellectual property” and thereby ban members from wearing their unifying “colors” or patches. Federal prosecutors will ask the judge to fine the Mongol Nation -- the West Covina, CA entity that legally owns the club trademark -- and order it to forfeit rights to the identifying logo worn on the bikers’ vests.
24
Since the case is focused on the Mongols organization, no specific individuals are facing jail or prison time, but the government’s attempt to defrock club members is aimed at dismantling the club by destroying their identity and thus its allure. During the five-week trial that ended Thursday, December 13, 2018 prosecutors testified that the Mongols were a violent criminal enterprise. According to the Associated Press, in finding the Mongols guilty of racketeering, jurors decided that the motorcycle club itself is a criminal organization. The Mongols have denied that they are a criminal enterprise, arguing that the organization itself isn’t responsible for crimes committed by individual members or in self-defense. Defense attorney Joseph A. Yanny argued that individual club members may have committed criminal acts but the club is blameless and kicks out members under a “zero-tolerance” policy for such activity. “They won the battle, but they did not win the war,” said David Santillan, the current president of the Mongols, said of the government after the jury verdict. In 2008, dozens of members were charged with racketeering based on an investigation in which agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives infiltrated the club, and a judge ruled that they should forfeit the Mongols trademark but later reversed the decision. The new case was filed in 2013, and it was thrown out two years later by U.S. District Judge David O. Carter, but he was overruled on appeal. Now, the same jury will return to court Jan. 8, as the focus of the trial shifts to potential seizures from the Mongols. Judge Carter, who is presiding over the trial, will make the final ruling on exactly what will be seized. If the judge ultimately approves the seizure of the trademark, he would also determine exactly what the government could do with it, including whether they could literally take the Mongols jackets off members' backs. Motorcycle clubs across the country are watching this test case closely. “They take our patch,” Santillan told the New York Times, “and then they take all the clubs’ patches.” NCOM CONVENTION TO ADDRESS BIKERS’ RIGHTS ISSUES Topics such as Motorcycle Profiling and “Save the Patch” will be among the many issues of concern to our nation’s motorcycle community that will be addressed during the upcoming 34th annual NCOM Convention, to be held Mother’s Day weekend, May 10-12, 2019 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Orlando, Florida. Hundreds of bikers’ rights activists from the ranks of motorcycle rights organizations (MROs) and Confederations of Clubs (COCs), as well as independents and other allied riders will gather to discuss the concerns of all riders. Agenda items will cover various legal and legislative issues, with Special Meetings for Veterans Affairs, Women in Motorcycling, Clean & Sober Roundtable and World of Sport Bikes, as well as the Christian Unity Conference and Confederation of Clubs Patch Holders Meeting. Additional seminars will be conducted regarding Restoration of Rights, Leadership 101 and "Share the Road" Motorcycle Safety. All motorcyclists are welcome, and to pre-register for the 2019 NCOM Convention contact the National Coalition of Motorcyclists at (800) ON-A-BIKE or visit www.ON-A-BIKE.com.

CELL PHONE BANS ARE SAVING MOTORCYCLISTS’ LIVES Laws to ban or curb drivers' use of cell phones and other handheld devices have greatly reduced the rate of fatalities for motorcyclists, according to a new study by faculty at Florida Atlantic University and the University of Miami. The study's findings, recently published in Social Science & Medicine, show that states with moderate to strong bans have motorcycle fatality rates that differ by as much as 11% compared to states with no bans. The study originally intended to focus on overall traffic fatality rates involving cell phone use while driving. When it comes to car vs. car crashes, it's not clear that partial or total bans on phone use while driving has had any effect on fatalities, due largely to the high level of crash safety built into modern cars. Such is not the case when it comes to motorcycles, however. To the researchers' surprise, data from the study reflects that states that have either a partial or total ban on cell phone use while driving have a lower number of motorcycle fatalities compared to states with no ban at all. The researchers of this study argue that policymakers should consider strengthening texting and handheld cell phone bans, as well as enforcement, to improve safety and save motorcyclist lives. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, using a hand-held cell phone while driving is illegal in just sixteen states plus Washington, D.C. "In the case of motorcycles, these laws seem to be effective," said study co-author Gulcin Gumus, Ph.D., an associate professor in health administration in the Department of Management Programs at FAU's College of Business. "While it's not clear that these laws have had an impact on reducing the overall number of traffic fatalities, when we focus specifically on motorcycles, we find that these laws are having a major impact in reducing deaths among motorcycle riders." RECORD NUMBERS OF WOMEN ARE RIDING MOTORCYCLES More and more women are moving from the back seat of a motorcycle to behind the handlebars, with the number of female riders doubling over the past decade from one in ten in 2009 to one in five today. January 2019
A study by the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) found that women now make up 19% of motorcycle owners, with even greater ownership among younger generations. The survey found that among Millennials (Generation Y, born from 19852004), 26% of motorcycle owners were women. Among Gen X (those born 1965-1984), 22% were women. "As the number of Boomers and mature motorcyclists shrink and are replaced by newer riders, we could soon be looking at a solid 25% of motorcycle owners being female," said Andria Yu, MIC director of communications. The MIC polled 2,472 adults nationwide for the 2018 Motorcycle/ ATV Owner Survey. For decades, the MIC says its surveys have served as the census of motorcycling, and have tracked a steady growth in the percentage of women who own bikes. The MIC says the 2018 owner survey also found that women motorcycle owners spend, on average, $574 a year on tires, routine repairs, maintenance, replacement parts, and accessories and modifying equipment, compared with $497 by men. Motorcycling has grown in popularity and acceptance in American culture in recent decades, which the MIC says is reflected in their survey. It found that 66% of women motorcycle owners say their family and friends would have a positive attitude toward motorcycles and scooters. However, total ridership is struggling according to USA Today, and overall new motorcycle sales have been stagnant in the U.S. since the Great Recession, with annual sales peaking in 2006. NATIONAL CORVETTE MUSEUM
I
don’t know about you, but to me, I think Corvettes are both American and beautiful! Therefore, as we have several mild and sunny days, those in Middle Tennessee and Central Kentucky or visitors to these areas, have opportunities to make short rides, even during the dead of winter. Why not use your ride to see some really cool cars? The Corvettes on display are rotated, but there are more than 60 on display at all times. The museum is located at, appropriately, 500 Corvette Drive, Bowling Green, Kentucky, right off of I-65. It is directly across the street from the Corvette Assembly Plant; however, plant tours have been suspended until sometime in 2019, but check back at corvettemuseum.org for updates. Also, you can buy a new Corvette (we can dream, can’t we) and have it delivered as an exhibit in the museum. Various options of laps are available at the Motorsports Park, two miles from the museum, including driving a C7 Corvette Stingray Z51, your own car or hot laps with a professional driver at speeds over 100 mph. There are many highlights to the museum, including one that may bring tears to your eyes. Very early in the morning of February 12, 2014, a sinkhole opened up in the museum floor, sending eight priceless Corvettes crashing into the 30 foot hole. The exhibit includes the non-restorable mangled Corvettes, dirt and all, security footage of the cave-in, recovery process, two restored Vets and a 48” viewing area of the sinkhole. Nonrestored cars include a ZR 1 Spyder, a 1984 concept car and the 2009 1.5 millionth Corvette. On display is the 262nd Corvette ever made. There were only 300 1953 models sold. These all fiberglass cars, with 6 cylinder engines were built in a makeshift “factory” located in the Customer Delivery Garage and had an MSRP of $3,498. I remember a classmate’s father owned one and it, like all ’53’s, was white with a red interior, black top, and 2-speed automatic.
26
Also displayed is a 1955 Vet, the first with a V-8. The displays include Roy Orbison’s 1967 427, a 1984 650 HP Trans Am race car, Darrell Waltrip’s “Chrome Car” (banned by NASCAR, as it reflected adjacent car colors and made scoring difficult), a 1910 Buick “Bug”, the 1986 midengine Indy concept car and the 1968 AstroVet concept car, used for aerodynamic studies. Pace cars, race cars, one of a kind Vets and representative models of each series are all on view. Like Harley riders making the pilgrimage to Milwaukee every five years so do Corvette owners go to Bowling Green. As it happens the 25th Anniversary of the museum is in 2019 on August 28th-31st-the world’s largest moving automotive event. So be on the lookout for lots of great cars in the area then. You don’t have to be a Corvette owner or enthusiast to enjoy this museum. It’s well worth the trip. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper

by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley
Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: I started writing for the magazine about 2005. We were at war in the middle east and I was riding honor for veteran funerals and doing a lot of patriotic events and activities back then. I’m still doing that but it’s not as fast paced. Over the years I’ve tried to tie patriotic and veteran themes with the motorcycle community. As the Marxists agenda to take over the country and do away with the American Constitution has picked up steam and the Democrats have moved from leftleaning anti-American to full blown Marxist revolutionaries my articles have become more focused on spotlighting what is going on around us. Like frogs in a pot of cold water when the burner is turned on, it takes a while for the frog to realize he is being boiled. By then it’s too late, he’s cooked. Are you feeling any heat? Traditional Democrats are slow to realize their party has become totally anti-American. Many Republicans believe that all Republicans are strong conservatives who stand by the constitution but many Republicans have gone leftist too. Democrats supported slavery and after the civil war instituted gun control to keep freed blacks from having guns in the South. Lincoln and Republicans supported integration and freedom. Democrats under Woodrow Wilson reinstituted segregation. This move left got momentum in the early part of the 20th century when the communist movement changed its name to progressive. That’s also about when a national income tax was made law by our congress. Over the past 100 years our politicians have slowly ignored the constitution and taken more power. Social Security was adopted to take our money and allow the government to bribe us with socialist programs and then pay elderly citizens chump change so they had to rely on the government to eat. Tax rates have been increased and new taxes implemented to give government more control and keep us in our place. Medical insurance, licenses, unregulated government agencies are all population control. If we don’t submit they’ll take it away. Politicians get gold lined benefits for life and we get red tape. They now control public schools and disseminate propaganda to insure our children will be good anti-American communists when they grow up.
The media today supports the Marxist agenda. Russia spread money after WWII to influence Hollywood and our major news outlets to move to a leftist view. Now they openly put forward anti-constitution ideas and our society is so dumbed down we just nod our heads up and down like robots. The environmental movement has become a huge money maker for the Marxist movement and it is being drummed into our youth. Mao Tse Tung would be proud of how the subversives have usurped control of our children. Our founding fathers gave us the 2nd Amendment to preserve our individual freedom and to keep politicians from enslaving us but today anyone who believes in personal freedom, self-protection and the 2nd Amendment is cast as evil by every means possible. Why? Because as long as we can resist domination by a Marxist political class we are a threat to those who would make slaves of us all. Now they teach children to hate guns. Why? So they can control them when they get older and we are gone! These are the tactics of population control practiced by every communist revolution. Why is our President under constant attack? Because he is working to reverse the communist takeover and keep us free!!! Our major institutions like the FBI, CIA, NSA, IRS and a host of government created agencies are filled with people who were not elected and once hired are protected from firing. Once these agencies are headed by greedy power hungry people who aren’t willing to follow the constitution as written the whole mindset of the agency changes into one of control and domination. “We the People” gets thrown out the window and “We the Bureaucrats” takes over. A strong house won’t stand up to these subterranean termites forever. At some point it will collapse. Read and stand for your constitution and freedom!!! Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. You can comment at bousle19@comcast.net - Bulldog * My monthly column reflects my personal point of view and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Publishers of this magazine, but they, like me, acknowledge the sacrifices made for the privilege of Freedom of Speech, therefore, they gratefully let me rant. Thank you for reading my rants. Hope my opinions don’t offend anyone, but, we all should be grateful for the right to have free opinions.

I’m going to check your prostate with this hand, and with the other hand I’m going to hold on to your penis to keep it out of the way. Now take a deep breath and say, ‘99’. The ole guy biker begins, “One ...Two... Three…” -------------------------------------------------------------A guy with a black eye boards his plane bound for Pittsburgh and sits down in his seat. He notices immediately that the guy next to him has a black eye, too. He says to him, “Hey, this is a coincidence, we both have black eyes; mind if I ask how you got yours?” The other guy says, “Well, it just happened, it was a tongue twister accident. See, I was at the ticket counter and this gorgeous blonde with the most massive breasts I’d ever seen was there. So, instead of saying, ‘I’d like two tickets to Pittsburgh,’ I accidentally said, ‘I’d like two pickets to Tittsburgh’….so she socked me a good one.” The first guy replied, “Wow! This is unbelievable. Mine was a tongue-twister too. I was at the breakfast table and I wanted to say to my wife, “Please pour me a bowl of Frosties, honey.’ But I accidentally said, ‘You have ruined my life you evil, self-centered, life sucking witch.’ ‘Crazy how that stuff just happens, huh’?
