Honoring a LOCAL HERO

On August 26th, 2021 our Nation’s heart felt the loss of 13 American service members. One of the fallen was our own Local Hero, Army Staff Sgt Ryan C. Knauss. Being from Corryton, Tennessee, and a graduate of Gibbs High School, Army Staff Sgt Ryan C. Knauss was well known and respected by many here in East Tennessee. You didn’t have to go far to come across someone who knew him personally and hurt from the loss of such an incredible young man. Many of those are within the motorcycle community. So naturally, the desire to come together and pay respect with a benefit ride, was without question. Enter Pete’s Place, a local restaurant in Maynardville, TN. Only 12 miles from the school where Army Staff Sgt Ryan C. Knauss graduated from, sits a restaurant where most locals go when in search of the best steak around. To the motorcycle community, Pete’s Place is home to Wednesday’s Hump Day Hangout. It came as no surprise, that Keith Neese, the owner of Pete’s Place had a heartfelt desire to honor this young man. And so, the 1st Annual Ryan C. Knauss ‘Honor Ride’ was scheduled. The ‘Honor Ride’ would be no easy task, but the pure dedication and teamwork between the motorcycle community of East Tennessee, Pete’s Place, Garza Law Firm, Thunder Roads® TN/KY, The Tri-County Veterans Honor Guard, and countless volunteers, would prove that when hearts share a love and respect for the

sacrifice made by our servicemen and women, no mountain shall be unmoved. On Saturday, October 9th, American Flags lined Maynardville Highway. Police were in position to escort whoever chose to ride, whether 2, 3, or 4 wheels. They were there not only to pay their respects but to provide the riders with safety. Registration was set up; coffee and donuts were being served and the bikes started to roll in. Not knowing what the turnout would be, the only concern was that respect was paid to a lost hero. However, after 50 bikes arrived, then 50 more and 50 more, and so on and so on, it was evident our community would unite that day as grieving Americans. The anthem was sung (by members of Gibbs High School Choir), prayers were spoken, and the bikes rode out with a parade of flags proudly waving. Families along the route came out from their homes to join in the tribute as the riders went by. Upon returning, The Tri-County Honor Guard rendered a 21-gun salute and an emotional folding of the flag. The National Anthem would be sung again as 13 large flags stood on a hill, representing the young lives lost too soon. All 13 soldiers’ names would be read aloud and not a dry eye could be found. That day, we Honored a Local Hero.
