rab your helmet! With riding season beginning, it’s time for riders to start thinking about attending their next motorcycle rally. We love to take advantage of all the different moto events offered locally, as well as throughout the state. During the year there are a range of events suited to many different styles of riding, spectating or just hanging out with rad bikes. There are tons of rallies and events all summer and when it comes to bike events, biggest isn’t always best, and right now there’s never been a wider selection of eclectic shows catering to every type of biker. Check out the ads and event pages for some cool local rallies! As you know, on the evening of March 2nd, and the early morning of the 3rd a series of Tornados touched down across the state of Tennessee. The first report came from Gibson County just south of Bradford, then Carroll, Benton, and Humphries all received damage with 1 dead near Camden. When it touched down in Nashville it did extensive damage and killed 6, then it hit Wilson, Smith and Putnam where it claimed another 19 victims. All together 26 people lost their lives, but as Tennesseans do, people from near and far and from all walks of life pitched in and helped their neighbors. Witnessing it firsthand gives a whole new meaning to “Love thy neighbor”. While the cleanup was going on we started hearing reports about a virus in China, we were told it could come here and it has. At least in the short term it has changed the way we do some things. The best advice we’ve heard is “act like you have it and you don’t want to give it to anyone else”. Want to know something else you can do? Ride! Most of our advertisers are open, even if they have different hours and they are taking precautions as we all should be but they are waiting for you to come see them so if you have some time and want to social distance on your bike, please don’t forget the small businesses, they’d love to see you. Even if you’re going nowhere in particular, the fresh air and time to think helps alleviate some of the anxieties about the current socioeconomic climate. Instead of sitting in front of your laptop or staring at your cell phone voraciously consuming the news and not being able to do anything about it, let your mind focus on throttle, brake, clutch, and lean angle for a while instead. It’s probably the healthier way to cope with the unknown. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Tennessee that were affected by the tornado and the people that have lost loved ones and their homes or businesses. Our thoughts and prayers are also with those who have lost loved ones to this virus. May God console them and grant them peace. We pray also for doctors, nurses, and caregivers, for public health officials and all civic leaders. May God grant them courage and prudence as they seek to respond to this emergency with compassion and in service to the common good. Everyone be safe and wash your hands! “THE CORONAVIRUS & THE CHURCH” Matt.24:6-7 “And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that ye be not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, kingdom against kingdom; and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers’ places.” With all the sports (pro & college) auditoriums, stadiums, and schools being closed down, I now hear that the churches will be the next place the government will want to shut down. We must recognize that this coronavirus is an attack from Satan himself to put a stop to Church attendance. He knows that he is running out of time. Satan is doing all he can to bring grief, sorrow, fear, doubt, unbelief and separate God’s people. “Pestilences” is a disease that man has no cure for, we have seen this before in the bubonic plague, polio, tuberculous, Aids, SARS-Ebola, cancer, and now the coronavirus. I also believe that the opioid crises is also just another attack from the devil on God’s people. Just a few years ago when the housing market crashed, some people lost their jobs, homes, and many churches had to closed down because if it. I believe that this is just another attack directed at the Church. If the people stop coming to Church, there will be more Churches that will have to close its doors. This attack will try to separate you from your Church family, your pastors and leave you vulnerable. The wolf pack mentality is to separate you from the flock and pick you off one at a time. This is not the time to run from God but to run to God. Heb. 10:25 “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together…” You endanger yourself by not attending God’s house, you’ll spiritually starve yourself and become spiritually weak. 1 Pet. 5:8 “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour.” Not only do we have to be concerned about “the pestilences” issue, but also the affect it will have on our economy. Many people working in the sports industry, factory workers will lose their jobs. Luke 21:34-36 “Take heed to yourselves (pay attention),

lest at any time your hearts (spiritman) be overcharged with surfeiting (gluttony), and drunkenness, and cares of this life (personal problems), and so that day come upon you unawares. For as a snare (trap) shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the earth. Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass.” This is when you’re going to need your God and your church family more than ever! Basil – Male Domestic Shorthair: Hey guys! My name is Basil. I am a very good boy! My favorite thing to do is be beside my humans. I’m great at giving high-fives, head bumps, and curling my tail into an adorable little question mark. I’m very good at snuggling, I have polite litter box manners, and I snuggle up to every human I meet! If you have seasonal allergies, we can be good friends, because my eyes get itchy and red too sometimes! My foster mommy gives me medicine and that usually helps. I love sharing my home with my foster doggy brother. He’s very big and playful and loves to bug me. He doesn’t bother me a bit, and you can usually find us sharing the couch together waiting for mommy to get home. I love dogs and people, but other cats and I do NOT get along. It’s very important to me to be the only cat in the house. When I come to my new home, it may take me some time to adjust. It took my foster mommy almost two weeks just to convince me I was in a safe place. Once I adjusted though, I transformed into the funny, sweet, playful boy you see here. Please be patient with me. Overall, I am very sweet, good boy that’s just looking for a person to love forever. Big Boy – Senior Male Bombay/Fiv Positive: Big Boy is a great big ole love bug. He is super affectionate. He loves attention and loves to be petted. He gets along great with other cats too. He is very laid back and not aggressive at all. New studies show FIV cats and non FIV cats can liver harmoniously together. He would be a great addition to any home. He is an older boy but very healthy. Bonnie – Female Domestic Shorthair: Bonnie is a sweet loving girl. She’s wonderful with kids, dogs and even other cats too. If you’re looking for real sweet lovin’ girl then Bonnie would be a great choice. Callie – Young Female Calico: Callie is a sweet and loving girl but needs a quiet home. She had a hard life before rescue and just needs someone to be patient with her and give her the love and attention she deserves. Callie would be good in a home with no children. She needs quiet and peaceful surroundings to blossoms.

Happy Paws Rescue has her in a great foster home but we are hoping we can find her a terrific forever home to spend the next decade in! They put food under their back porch for her but really never gave her any attention. Sadly, they moved and left her and that is how I ended up finding her. She immediately let me hold her and pet her and touch her. She is very trusting. She is about two years old. Sweet girl leans in for kisses when you hold her. Loves attention and cuddles. I have ridden most of my life and I wanted something alittle more comfortable to ride. Over the years I always wanted do something else to it and couldn’t quite make my mind up as to what. I have attended and worked most of the major annual Bike Rallies and met a lot of people and have seen every kind of bike imaginable. I have always wanted a “Bike Wheel” motorcycle just because I liked the looks of them and the radical things you can do to them. I first started by getting a color matched inner fairing from The Fairing Exchange in Orange Park, FL. Then TFX has a new Metra inner fairing that will accommodate a Double Din Sony Radio, amp and speakers so they installed that. I started searching for a “Big Wheel” and FTD Customs in Hendersonville, TN and I talked and I decided on a 26” Maze wheel they had. In order to install that I got with HHI Hawg Halters Inc in GA and purchased the American Suspension Bolt on neck, 9 degree triple trees, chrome torpedo forks, chrome caliber and a FL style Steel fender. FTD customs installed the wheel and all the parts for me and my dream came true. I would like to thank my wife and all the people that have worked on this bike to get it where I like it (almost) and all my family and friends that voted for me. Remember, not only does H-D mean hundreds of dollars, it also means half done!!!! I
f you want a really fun place to eat, this is it. Besides having both a nostalgic and classic diner setting, they have some great diner eats and drinks. When I eat at a diner, I always check out the breakfast menu. Like most diners, breakfast is served all day. The one thing that jumped out at me was the “Corned Beef Hash”. It’s a tender house-made corned beef hash, green and red peppers, hash browns topped with two eggs made to order, horseradish cream and a Sunliner biscuit. The biscuit is the size of a cat head. To top it off you get a side order of the house-blend sausage gravy.

The “White Russian” is made with a vanilla milkshake spun with Absolute Vodka and Kahlua, topped off with whipped cream, caramel drizzle and a cherry. THE SECOND AMENDMENT
S
pring has officially sprung, fellow bikers! While your ever-lovable Grey Beard Biker rides year-round, the 2020 riding season is officially here. Where will 2020 take you? Perhaps to Smoky Mountain Thunder over Memorial Day Weekend? I certainly hope so. It is an amazing event that will make even the toughest biker well up with tears remembering the sacrifices our veterans have made to protect our freedom. We all know that FREEDOM IS NOT FREE! This month’s article, without being politically incorrect, is going to dive into our Second Amendment: “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” It sounds pretty simple. But this single sentence has been perverted by the gun control crowd more than any other sentence in our founding documents. Our Founding Documents Before we dive too deep into the Second Amendment, let’s take a look at all of our Founding documents: 1. The Declaration of Independence was our original document. It was written primarily by Thomas Jefferson, with input from Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Robert Livingston and Roger Sherman. This document declared our independence and described what our Founders were striving for: a democratic republic. It would be ratified by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. 2. The U.S. Constitution was the operating blueprint for the United States. It was officially ratified by all of the states on June 21, 1788 and became the effective rule of the land on March 4, 1789. 3. The Bill of Rights was our next founding document and became the first 10 amendments to our U.S. Constitution. After the adoption of our constitution, many of our Founding Fathers were concerned about a lack of protection for the citizens. These Founders were primarily aligned with the Anti-Federalists and included the most outspoken critic of the Federalists, Thomas Jefferson. These wise men wanted protections for the people including freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly and protection against an overarching Federal government. These ten amendments would be drafted on September 25, 1789 and ratified by all states on December 15, 1791. These amendments obviously included the Second – which we freedom lovers cherish. Over the years, there have been continuous attacks on the Second Amendment by those who wish to limit our ability to “keep and bear arms.” The biggest being the Assault Weapons Ban of 1994 – a law which fortunately expired after 10 years of doing nothing to prevent violent crime with firearms. But the calls for new assault weapon bans continue along with other proposed legislation including: Universal background checks, restrictions in magazine capacity, banning of all semiautomatic firearms and gun registries. The biggest fallback fallacy of those wanting to take away our freedoms is, “the founders never envisioned modern weapons.” Or, “it only applies to the militia” – which they falsely claim to be our National Guard. This is all a bunch
of hooey. Every single one of the Bill of Rights speaks to individual rights, with the exception of the Tenth Amendment. Federalist No. 46 The Federalist Papers were written by three of the Founding Fathers: John Jay, Alexander Hamilton and James Madison. These essays were originally written anonymously under the pseudonym, Publius, and were used as a way for these Founders to speak directly to the “People” – before the ratification of our Constitution. Federalist No. 46 was written by James Madison and spoke to the “right to keep and bear arms.” Keep in mind this was before the ratification of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Some of the key portions of No. 46 are: With regards to our right to bear arms, Madison writes, “The highest number to which, according to the best computation, a standing army can be carried in any country, does not exceed one hundredth part of the whole number of souls; or one twenty-fifth part of the number able to bear arms. This proportion would not yield, in the United States; an army of more than twentyfive or thirty thousand men. To these would be opposed a militia amounting to near half a million of citizens with arms in their hands, officered by men chosen from among themselves, fighting for their common liberties, and conducted by governments (states) possessing their affections and confidence.” Madison continues, “Besides the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation, the existence of subordinate governments (states), to which the people are attached, and by which the militia officers are appointed, forms a barrier against the enterprises of ambition, more insurmountable than any which a simple government (Federal government) of any form can admit of.” Conclusion So, what does this all mean? First, the citizens of the United States are the last protection against any enemy, foreign or domestic. Domestic? Yes! Madison, and all of the Founders, recognized that a strong central government, with an ambition to force its will on her people, is dangerous to all God Given rights. Including speech, the press, assembly and the right to a speedy trial. Second, Madison recognized that these God Given rights are not given by the government. This includes the right to protect yourself. Someone attacking you is wanting to take away your rights to everything outlined in the Bill of Rights – with the exception of the Tenth Amendment. So, the next time a gun grabber tells you that you don’t need a gun, confidently tell them that it’s the Bill of Rights – which includes your right to live how you choose. LAND BETWEEN THE LAKES T
he area between the Cumberland River and the Tennessee River in western Kentucky and northwestern middle Tennessee was known as Between the Rivers from the 1830’s until the 1960’s when the Cumberland was dammed to form Lake Barkley and a canal was built to join it with the previously dammed Kentucky Lake (in the 1940’s). The unflooded portion of the land was renamed as Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, currently under the management of the National Park service. As it is named, not being a national park, recreation is the theme, including hunting. However, in an agreement with the several state parks in the area there are no restaurants in LBL. Not to worry, the state parks have good food as does the ever popular, newly reopened Patti’s 1880 Settlement (with their 2” pork chops) and many other local ones. While preservation of the natural environment is a goal of the 170,000 acre LBL, varied recreational opportunities abound. Motorcyclists often ride the LBL roads, especially “The Trace”, shortened from “The Buffalo Trace”, in the Tennessee portion. This route includes scenic picnic areas, the Golden Pond Visitors Center and Planetarium, the 1850’s Working Farm, the Wrangler’s Camp (with horseback riding), Turkey Bay (off road vehicles), The Great Western Iron Furnace and the Elk and Bison Prairie. The 1850’s Working Farm has costumed staff, showing the crafts used by the early settlers in the area. Early farming methods are used to grow “heirloom” crops, flowers, and animals. For the adventurous, bring your off highway vehicle and ride the 100 miles of trails in Turkey Bay. There are also 261 miles of hiking trails, 70 mountain bike trails, 1400 camp sites (only 4 developed campgrounds – many rustic) 26 boat ramps, (on 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline) and 444 miles of scenic roads. In 1996 the 700 acre Elk and Bison Prairie was opened to vehicles.

Here visitors can get up close and personal to, of course, bison and elk. As seen in the bison roadblock pictured, they necessarily prohibit motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians. However, noncagers can still see some of these animals from The Trace safely outside of the fence. The Great Western Iron Furnace is directly beside The Trace. This well preserved furnace was built by Brian, Newell & Co. in 1854 and closed in 1856 due to a shortage of iron ore from nearby shallow deposits and a slave insurrection by the furnace crew. This is one of many furnaces in LBL. Please see landbetweenthelakes.us before you go. Hours vary and there are fees for some activities. Do as I say, not as I do. We went on a Monday in March. Yes, we found out that most activities are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays in March and November! We have been several times in the past and know you will enjoy the ride. THE DARK SIDE By Hank Bonecutter
had never heard of the term “Dark Side” as it relates to motorcycles until about a year ago. In my short time on a motorcycle, it never dawned on me that you could or WOULD ever put a car tire on a motorcycle. Apparently you can and some people do. Just like the debate over “lane splitting,” the practice of putting a car tire on a motorcycle is just as volatile and opinions are both mixed and passionate. I would never do it, but I know bikers who do, and it doesn’t seem to make any difference to them. The primary reason for putting a car tire on the rear of a motorcycle is purely financial. Car tires are cheaper than motorcycle tires and can offer longer lasting life. I can’t seem to find any other reason for doing it. I ride with a guy who is an excellent rider and he’s a “darksider” and can ride like a beast. There are many things the experts point out about going to the darkside, but traction and splitting away from the rim are two that stand out for me. Apparently the tire can split easier, or pull away from the rim easier than the standard motorcycle tire that it was designed for.

I’ve learned over the last couple of years that bikers do all sorts of unconventional things to their bikes. They “amp” up their engine in a variety of ways, do things to the frame that fits their personality and taste.

To each his own. It’s YOUR motorcycle, YOUR life and YOUR experience. That’s the beauty of it all!
I do find it interesting how passionate bikers are about their choices. “I do it, and so should you” or, “it’s perfectly safe so don’t be a wimp about it.”
I’m superstitious and pretty much stick to the same protocol with my bike as when I started riding. I buy the same tires, I use synthetic oil, I pump non ethanol gas and so on. It’s worked for me all these years, and I don’t have any intentions of cutting corners, or trying something new. I’m not a fan of lane splitting either, but then again, I don’t live in an area where that’s necessary. States that permit lane splitting have

I knew going in that this lifestyle isn’t cheap. I DO find the best deals on the tires I buy, but I just wouldn’t be comfortable with having a car tire on my bike, but that’s me and I don’t speak for anyone but myself.
To me it’s a personal choice to ride on the dark side. It’s your choice to ride however you feel comfortable. That’s the beauty of this whole thing, you can do it any DAMN way you want. I’m not going to the dark side anytime soon, and I won’t be lane splitting either. But that’s just me and that’s all that matters.

COVID-19 CANCELLATIONS & SUSPENSIONS As worldwide headlines have been dominated by societal disruptions tied to the Coronavirus outbreak, from business and school closures to suspending professional sports, COVID-19 related cancellations and postponements have hit the motorcycling community as well, with numerous biker events, motorcycle races and even the motorcycling industry itself falling victim to the spreading contagion. Daytona Bike Week was one of the first casualties, as Mayor Derrick Henry declared a state of emergency for the city on Friday, March 13th and called off the event, though the revocation of city-issued permits barely affected the throngs of rally-goers rolling down Main Street the last few days. The 79th Daytona 200, however, has been postponed until Biketoberfest in October and the Daytona TT will be rescheduled. Bans placed on large gatherings has also played havoc with other racing venues, with World Superbike, Le Mans 24-Hour and MotoGP races rescheduled, the 2020 Supercross season halted, and the Isle of Man TT road race being cancelled. The Coronavirus is impacting many events throughout the country, but the 80th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is “still on,” as is the 97th Laconia Motorcycle Week, both months away. Worldwide, motorcycle factories are shutting down production lines or scaling back, supply chains are jeopardized and accessories and riding gear may soon become short in supply. This could also last for several months even after the virus has cleared, as manufacturers ramp back up, and you can expect even more announcements as the virus runs its course. At the Box Office, even the world premiere of the latest James Bond film ‘No Time To Die’ has been delayed to November, so bike fans will have to wait to see M15 Agent 007 taking part in some spectacular stunts at the helm of a Triumph Scrambler 1200. MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY’S URGENT COVID-19 REQUEST TO CONGRESS “We are all in this together and it is critical to keep motorcycle dealerships up and running during the COVID-19 crisis,” said the Motorcycle Industry Council in an open letter to the President and all Congressional representatives, so “This afternoon the MIC sent a letter to the White House urging that powersports manufacturing facilities, distribution centers and dealerships be allowed uninterrupted operation during emergency declarations.” The MIC letter goes on to request citizen support; “Sharing this with our elected officials is something proactive we can do beyond 20 20
maintaining social distancing,” and MIC Senior VP, Government Relations Scott Schloegel provided a template with the talking points you can send to your congressional representatives, such as; “Motorcycles, ATVs and ROVs are used for critical daily activity including transportation, farming operations, law enforcement, emergency response for fires, remote rescue operations, and military operations. It is essential that these vehicles and related parts, safety apparel, and accessories be available, and capable of being serviced by qualified technicians.” Ask your legislators for this simple addition to the Phase 3 legislation now under consideration. GLOBAL MOTORCYCLE SALES STUMBLE Global motorcycle sales were a mixed bag for major manufacturers in 2019. Despite recording sales of 60.1 million units in 2019, the global motorcycle market shrunk by 1.6 million and the forecast for 2020 isn’t clear nor sunny. Global motorcycle sales grew to its highest level ever in 2018 with 61.7 million units sold, but last year was particularly difficult for the Indian market which experienced a 3.1-million downturn in sales. Luckily, increases of 1.3 million units in China and 1.1 million units in Europe helped offset the disappointing performance of the world’s largest motorcycle market. Although the Indian market shrunk by 19% between 2018 and 2019, it still reigned as the largest two-wheeler market in the world with 18.5 million in sales. China trailed close behind with 16.3 million, but the field took a sharp drop from there with Indonesia at 6.5 million, Vietnam coming in at 3.2 million, and the Philippines reporting 1.8 million. For some perspective, the United States took the 11th spot on the list, Japan's poor performance in 2019 earned it the 15th slot, and Europe’s highest-selling country, France, ranked as low as 17th. Vehicle type also factors into the equation with the 50cc+ scooter segment responsible for 25.8 million in sales. Motorcycles nip at the scooter’s heels with 24.8 million units sold while trikes represent 4.7 million and mopeds bring in 4.6 million units. Quadricycles/ATV had 600,000 units sold. While the global moto market declined by 2.6% in 2019, the spread of Coronavirus Disease could result in further losses in 2020. ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE & SCOOTER MARKET ON THE UPSWING The global electric motorcycle and scooter market are forecast to grow to a value of US$14.29 Billion by 2027, growing at a robust CAGR of 7.1% over 2019 to 2027: “Mobility has become an important component of the smart city framework of cities, and this trend shall pave way for the popularity of electric motorcycles and scooters,” according to a March 18 report by Transparency Market Research. “The growth of the global electric motorcycle and scooter market is a function of advancements in green energy technologies.” Some of the leading drivers of demand within the global electric motorcycle and scooter market are: Lead acid batteries are being developed in abundance across the

globe, and this trend has supported the growth of the global electric motorcycle and scooter market. Growing traffic congestion has led several population groups to prefer two-wheelers over private cars for their daily commute. This factor, coupled with the stellar pace of manufacturing electric scooters, shall benefit market vendors. The need to reduce air pollution and carbon emissions has led governments and other industries to take multiple measures and initiatives at administrative and industrial levels. Development of electric motorcycles and scooters is also a part of these initiatives. Governments have begun providing incentives to manufacture electric vehicles, which will encourage a larger number of manufacturers towards developing resilient and performanceoriented electric vehicles. “The leading vendors in the global electric motorcycle and scooter market are looking at tapping into the needs and requirements of the masses.” OHIO LEGALIZES EARPLUG USE FOR MOTORCYCLISTS Buckeye bikers will legally be allowed to wear earplugs while riding, under a new law signed by Governor Mike DeWine (R) in a February 21, 2020 ceremony at the Ohio Statehouse.
Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) Attorney for Ohio Ralph C. Buss had previously represented a truck driver referred to him by ABATE who had received a citation for wearing earplugs while riding his motorcycle, and stood to lose his Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), which helped draw attention to the need to reform the antiquated law. SAVE THE SALT The future of land speed racing at the Bonneville Salt Flats is in jeopardy! The once 13-mile racetrack at Bonneville is now less than 8 miles due to salt erosion. It is critically important that the U.S. Department of the Interior contributes funds toward a 10-year restoration program that will dramatically increase the amount of salt pumped onto the Bonneville salt basin, located on the Utah/Nevada border near Wendover, Utah. This unique geologic formation has served as the backdrop for movies, commercials and photos, and is a magnet for tourists. However, Bonneville is most well-known for its role in the history of motorsports, having served as a preeminent race venue since the early 1900s. Help restore the Bonneville Salt Flats before it's too late by urging the Secretary of Interior to fund the Restore Bonneville program through the department’s FY 2020 budget.
House Bill 129, sponsored by State Rep. Riordan McCain (R-Upper Sandusky), also allows motorcyclists to wear earphones for hearing protection, but prohibits riders from listening to music or other entertainment. Previously, like in many other states, wearing earplugs was a minor misdemeanor, punishable by a fine up to $150 and points against your license.
The U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee's report accompanying the Interior Department's FY 2020 appropriation included language expecting the Department to work with the State of Utah on the pending cooperative agreement to support Bonneville's restoration, but a final agreement to provide BLM funding has not been reached. The Utah State Legislature agreed to contribute $5 million to restore Bonneville contingent upon outside sources of funding for the project.
Earplugs help prevent long-term hearing damage from wind noise, say bill proponents like ABATE of Ohio, while still allowing riders to hear emergency sirens, car horns and other important sounds on the road. The bipartisan legislation easily passed both chambers of the state legislature unanimously, and drew no public opposition.

Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee and Kentucky: Last year my wife and I moved from Mount Juliet, Tennessee (home of Charlie Daniels) to a very rural country home about 90 miles West of Nashville. We bought this little slice of heaven in 2015 but weren’t able to actually move to the farm until last year. Shortly after we bought our farm a tornado hit a few miles East and killed three people. I grew up on the Kansas/Missouri line. Tornados were just a part of life. It was common knowledge you had to get below ground if you wanted to survive. Most people had a basement where you went when the sirens went off. “Back in the day,” TV went off air at midnight and you only had three stations. TV weather only came on local stations during normal hours. There wasn’t any special weather system tracking and reporting like we have now. Today the weather people have great technology to spot, predict and track severe storms. When I was a kid, we tuned in to the radio for late night storm information. We always went to the basement if there was a hint of a tornado spinning up. When I was about six a large tornado hit an area close to our house. I remember laying on blankets in the basement while my Dad ran up and down the stairs watching in the dark for signs of the storm. He saw it pass on the horizon but didn’t realize it was a tornado because it was so big it looked like a big cloud moving along the ground in the dark. The destruction was bad. The high school got hit with a lot of kids inside having a dance. Many were hurt when the gym walls collapsed and a lot of houses were damaged. My dad and our neighbors all went to the area hit and helped with the clean-up. It was just understood that churches and the community were the primary resource for helping those in need when disaster struck. In the early morning hours of March 3rd our Midland 400 weather radio started blasting an alert and we learned there was a tornado watch. I looked out of our bedroom window and saw lightning to the North but also saw a band of stars between us and the storm moving along I-40. I got up and turned on the television and the weather folks were tracking the storm as it moved towards Nashville. They started pointing out the “hook” on radar that was likely a tornado. Later the reports of damage came in about John C. Tune airport, then German Town in Nashville, Donelson, Hermitage, Mount Juliet, Lebanon and then

Cookeville. As the sun came up the reports of deaths started coming in. As you know, 24 people died as tornados ripped across Tennessee and Kentucky. The news stations started showing the damage on television and drones in the air gave a broader view of the extensive devastation. People were walking the streets trying to make sense of what had happened and trying to figure out what to do. Stories of miracles began to be reported. I’m writing this one week after the tornados and I have never been prouder to live in the Volunteer State of Tennessee. The sun hadn’t come up before people started searching debris for anyone trapped in the carnage. The police began standing guard where power lines lay on the ground to keep people from getting hurt, directing traffic, helping the injured and bringing order to chaotic scenes. Ambulances were on the roll taking the injured to hospitals and officials began to energize emergency plans. Forty-seven thousand people were without power but the power companies were already on site. Over the coming days volunteers showed up in mass. Thousands of volunteers began digging people out of the mess, bringing supplies, food, water, money and help in every way imaginable. By day six many of the areas hit had been cleaned up, debris sorted into piles of recyclables and scrap. Tree debris was piled on roadsides for FEMA pick up. Residents who could not live in their home got help packing up and getting moved. Services and insurance companies started the process of helping. People began raising hundreds of thousands of dollars to help the victims. There is still more to do but I have never seen such a vast outpouring of generous charity and help for the victims of a storm. Everyone is giving comfort and encouragement to those in need. Humanity and community are alive and well in Tennessee. Rebuilding will take a very long time but recovery is off to a great start. YOU ROCK TENNESSEE!!! Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t.
