H

appy Spring Everyone! Finally, the weather will be consistently warmer, the days are longer with more sunshine to enjoy, more importantly, the longer days give us more time for motorcycle riding. Last month our team enjoyed putting together what we referred to as our ‘Throw Back Issue,’ sharing stories of times long ago. Now as we turn towards the 2022 riding season, there is much going on. April is that transition month where the riding season begins, however, is not full-blown just yet. While the flowers are blooming, the weather is still quite temperamental. Where you may start your ride in the morning layered in your cold-weather riding gear as frost still likes to make its presence known. Underneath it all, you are prepared for the afternoon where it is possible the sun’s warmth will cause a detour for you to strip free of the layers. All the while, your rain gear is tucked away within arms reach for when the temperamental weather decides to give you a taste of all its personalities. Yes indeed, the month of April, gotta love it. Our team is eager to explore the upcoming months along with our readers. This is our 4th issue and

we continue to learn and grow along the way. We are humbled by the support and positive feedback we have received. We are preparing for the many motorcycle events that will be here before we know it. Bike Nights are starting up again, Rallies are in their final stages of preparation. Our calendar is filling up with Benefit Rides, Poker Runs, and a variety of motorcycle-themed fundraisers and events. Tennessee and Kentucky had some of the most incredible riding in the country and we don’t take it for granted. Our team has enjoyed being out in the community, meeting many of you and hearing your stories. Speaking of stories, we welcome our readers to share theirs with us. Do you have an interesting story? Do you know someone that we should showcase in one of our issues? Is there someone in your motorcycle community that is making a difference? Share your stories with us at GetMoreInfo@ThunderRoadsTennessee.com. Let’s all get out there and enjoy the warmer weather on two wheels (or three) and be safe doing so. BULLET POINTS

BIG-SMALL THINGS

About nine years ago, Marine Veteran Aaron Voigt set out to do something different concerning firearms manufacturing. The end result was the little single shot .22 LR / .22WMR handgun that folds up to the size of your credit card. The Lifecard. I first saw LifeCard in an outdoor backwoods’ survival magazine. It was an odd place to find it as it wasn’t the big bore primary pistol one would normally think of carrying in the woods. Nonetheless, it intrigued me. After a quick search for the company, Trail Blazer Firearms, I perused their inventory. The LifeCard comes in .22LR and .22 Magnum. At 1/2 inch thick, weighing less than 7 ounces, and completely ambidextrous, I needed one of these to have in my handlebar bag. I was interested in the .22 Mag, but it wasn’t available, so I picked up the .22LR. I’m glad I did. It’s not my go-to-gun when I ride, but as it easily fits into my pocket, it’s definitely my backup. And with the current availability of .22 rounds, it’s both cost effective and as a defense of life weapon. The LifeCard comes in a variety of finishes and colors ranging from Matte Black to Nickel plated, camo and even a design that looks just like a credit card. Lots to choose from. Both versions are constructed with prehardened steel and aluminum. All parts are anodized

making it corrosion resistant. The frame, when closed, is sleek with zero snags. The only noticeable difference is in the handle of the .22LR-it’s molded from polymer making it a tad lighter. Out of the box it’s a great gun. With three steps, unfolding the bottom half to convert into the handle, manipulating the upper serration to open the barrel to insert a round, and pulling back on the plunger, it’s ready to go. This all takes practice and regardless of any firearm you carry, repetition builds skills and muscle memory. For me, I place the LifeCard muzzle end first in my pocket so that when I draw it, the handle release serration is right where it should be at my fingertips. And within 2-3 seconds, its on-line. When fully closed, there’s no way for it to discharge-none. This is not the gun to have should you f ind yourself in a protracted f iref ight. And if you’re in the latter, that may have been your f irst mistake. Nonetheless, both the LR and magnum versions come with an internal three round storage capability in the handle. Reloading can cumbersome so situational awareness and practice are important. Depending on the LR/WMR and f inish, this big-small gun is right around $350 and as it’s a Veteran owned and operated business, there are discounts for Military and LEO’s. Stop by and see our friends at Tennessee Gun Country and ask to see the LifeCard.

s more riders take to the streets and trails, there are bikes ready and able to accommodate their interest. We’re excited to give a nod to the resurgence of Royal Enfield. From Café Racers such as the INT650, and its upscale GT650, to the aggressive dirt hungry Himalayan 410. Having seen a selection of models, not only are they retro eye candy, but the prices are even more attractive. One can get into a 650 Series around $6,200 and the Himalayan begs to be dusted up at just over $5,000. The 650 Series have that sculpted tank tucked-in riding position that is unmistakably Café racer and along with the retro clip-on handlebars that give these bikes that total vintage look, you’ll be ready to lean into some tight twisty’s, with both power and style.

This is where practicality meets frills, useable frills. Royal Enfield integrated a Blue Tooth App Nav system, the Enfield Tripper, that links to your phone. Next to the speedo is a smaller dial style gauge navigation pod that displays directions via arrows that fill in as the next turn approaches. No more hard to see temperamental touch screen to fool with. The app also allows the rider to enter up to 20 waypoints along the route so they’ll still have directions even in low-signal areas. Plus, the pod comes with a built-in USB charging port. Our friend’s over at Alcoa Good Times are proud of their line up and invite you to stop by for a demo.

The Himalayan is Royal Enfield’s answer to delivering a

Love Paris (TN) in the Springtime because that is when they hold the “World’s Biggest Fish Fry.” However, you can enjoy Paris at any time of year. Paris is in Henry County, about halfway between Memphis and Nashville, and is a quiet little town of about 10,000 people. It is the county seat of Henry County, with a stately courthouse built-in in 1896. The courthouse is surrounded by quaint little mom and pop shops around the square (closed on Sunday). And, along with nearby Paris Landing, was very active in the Civil War. Paris is named for, no surprise, Paris, France. It was given the name in honor of Marquis de Lafayette, a hero of the Revolutionary War. True to its name, it promotes the arts, including murals in the Back Alley of Paris, about a block west of the courthouse. What’s Paris without an Eiffel Tower? Yep, they have one of those, although only 60 feet tall. Originally built of wood, by the students of Christian Brothers University, for the 1990 Memphis in May, it soon became a hazard for the students, who persisted in climbing it and needed a new home. The city accepted an offer to be the new location for the replica, to celebrate Paris USA, and it was dedicated in 1993. Due to the deterioration of the wooden structure, it was replaced by the metal structure that stands at Eiffel Park today.

Back to the 69th Annual World’s Biggest Fish Fry. This April 23-30, the masses will descend on the Henry County Fairgrounds to devour 12,500 pounds of all-you-can-eat catfish, with all the trimmings. The tent will be open from 5-9 pm on April 27 and 11 am-9 pm, on the 2830th. In addition to the fish fry, you might like some of the other activities: a carnival, rodeo, demolition derby, street dances, and Christian concert, to name a few. Visit the World’s Biggest Fish Fry on Facebook, for a full schedule. Y’all are always looking for good rides (usually including food) so Paris might be a new or repeat location. “HARD KNOCKS”

We all have had some Hard Knocks in life, but the key is; do you handle it, or does it handle you? The Bible gives us several examples of how to handle Hard Knocks. Gen.15:13-14 God tells Abraham that the children of Israel will be “slaves for four hundred years, but when they come out, they will come out with great substance!” When this pandemic and all the problems it has brought is over, God will bless His people (Christians) who have abided by His Word; “with great substance.” Ruth 1:3-5 “…Naomi’s husband and two sons died.” Naomi’s two daughters-in-law; Orpah & Ruth, both loved Naomi but only Ruth would stay by Naomi’s side. Jesus Christ the Son of God would come through this blood line. 1 Sam. 17:45-50 “David prevailed over Goliath and smote him…and slew him.” If David had never fought Goliath, we might not have heard of David, killing Goliath was what made David so popular with the people. Your Hard Knocks could be the Goliaths in your life. Your Goliath could be sickness, poverty, or an addiction. You will never reach your God-given destiny without facing all your Goliaths along the way. It’s not your friends and loved ones that get you promoted, it’s your backstabbing associates. Your Goliaths will create a platform for you. We must learn from David and run at our Goliaths and not run from them. 1 Sam. 17:42-46 When Goliath saw David, he laughed at David. Goliath was 10 feet tall. A trained man of war. David “was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.” Goliath considered it a joke; “and Goliath said unto David; Am I a dog?” But David ran at him with nothing but a rag & a rock. Sometimes it seems that you just don’t have enough to get the job done, but if you’ll charge at it by faith, whatever you need will be there when you get there. “David took Goliath’s own sword and cut his head off.” Rom.5:3 “…but we glory in tribulation.” The Hard 12

Knocks in life should make us stronger in that we learn from our experiences, problems will always produce solutions, “knowing that tribulation works patience (proof); And patience (proof), experience; and experiences, hope.” 1 Cor.2:9 “But as it is written; Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for them that love Him.” In our wildest imagination, we can’t comprehend what all God has instore for us on this earth, and all He ask of us, is to love Him. The key to your breakthrough is not “The dos & don’ts,” it’s do you love Him? When God found David, God “was looking for a man after God’s own heart.” God wasn’t looking for another pattern of Himself, He was looking for someone that loved Him just because He was God. That is what brought David from the sheep field to be king over all of Israel. Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

iRACING…WHO KNEW? The Garza Law Firm Sponsors iRacing Virtual Bristol Race

On April 23, 2022, at 7pm, the “Ron Morris Motorsports Inaugural Garza Law Firm 600” will run at Bristol Motor Speedway for an exciting night of NASCAR Truck and Cup iRacing.

“This is a great opportunity for the iRacing Community to attract different types of sponsors in this ever-expanding venue” says Bill Muhlfeld, driver of the Garza Law Firm stable of race cars.

This doubleheader of wheel-to-wheel, bumper-tobumper racing action will be broadcasted live by ‘Full Send Broadcasting’.

According to Bill, “This is a whole new business venture for up-and-coming entrepreneurs, whether it be Drivers, Spotters, Car Builders, Painters, Designers, Promotors, Broadcasters, and everything in-between”.

The first race of the night is the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, which will race 200 laps for a $500 to win cash payout and will immediately be followed by the NASCAR Next Gen Cup Series, racing 400 laps for the $1,000 cash-to-win purse.

14

iRacing is starting to show up on the radar around the world and being supported by actual professional drivers and their teams.

I invite you to join us for this intense night of racing and get ready to watch hardcore action around this high banked half-mile mile track. The history behind iRacing is an interesting and compelling story as written by Andy Mahood from Gamesradar.com. Mahood writes the following: “John Henry is the principal owner of the Boston Red Sox and Fenway Sports Group – the co-owner of a leading NASCAR team, Roush Fenway Racing – as well as an avid simracer. The iRacing team combines more than 100 years of real-world racing experience with more than 50 years of successful racing simulation development. The company has developed numerous corporate relationships in the motorsport industry, including agreements to develop models of tracks with International Speedway Corporation, Speedway Motorsports, Inc., and Panoz Motor Sports Group, vehicles with GM, Ford, Volkswagen, Riley Technologies, Radical Sportscars and U.S. Legends Cars International. iRacing is the official simulation partner of the Sports Car Club of America, Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup, Star Mazda Championship, Skip Barber Racing School, and Australia’s V8 Super School.

In April 2009 iRacing and NASCAR announced a partnership to develop NASCAR-sanctioned online racing series. A similar program with the Indy Racing League, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Dallara was announced in August, 2009. The iRacing logo is a fixture at racetracks around the world. From the NASCAR Cup, IMSA SportsCar Series, and Australian V8 Supercar Series to short tracks and autocrosses, SCCA Pro and Club races — wherever there’s racing you’ll find iRacing. Similarly, the iRacing.com team’s collective resume includes professional driving experience from Formula One to SCCA, IMSA and pavement modifieds, together with amateur racing and auto crossing. Not to mention a Daytona 500-winning team owner, NASCAR, Indy- and sports-car race team managers and engineers as well as awardwinning motorsport writers”. The sponsorship of this race by the Garza Law Firm shows that there is a true spirit of entrepreneurship in these online racing events of entertainment and thrills. ennessee is ranked 6th in the Nation for uninsured motorists. 20% of Tennesseans are on the roads with NO insurance. It is estimated that 1-6 drivers in this country are riding DIRTY- (no insurance) or riding DUSTY(underinsured) YEAH, WE COULDN’T BELIEVE IT EITHER! THIS COULD BE CATASTROPHIC FOR MOTORCYCLISTS! UM, SO LET’S TALK! See what we did there?

Uninsured Motorists (UM) and Underinsured Motorists (UIM) Insurance is an ABSOLUTE necessity for riders. You don’t think so?? Read that first paragraph AGAIN! If you want to play the odds, do it in Vegas and not on your bike! Seriously, have you ever known a motorcyclist that was hit by a driver and walked away with just whiplash? Didn’t think so. It is almost a given, that injuries sustained as a rider are going to surpass the state-mandated minimum policy of $25,000. And before you go thinking, well I’ll just sue them for my medical expenses. NEWSFLASH… If Mr. Johnny no-insurance is driving around not paying to be properly insured, putting all of us at risk. Chances are, he isn’t living in a mansion on the beach with an outrageous stock portfolio! GET WHAT WE ARE SAYING? IT’S QUITE SIMPLE! If you get hit on your bike by a driver riding dirty, or even dusty, your UM and UIM coverage will help cover medical and property expenses. SHALL WE SAY IT LOUDER FOR THOSE IN THE BACK?

In Tennessee, you are required to opt out in writing if you wish to decline UM and/or UIM coverage. DON’T SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINE. So, do all of you motorcyclists reading this #understandtheassignment? CALL YOUR INSURANCE AGENT, OR A FRIEND’S AGENT, OR YOUR COUSIN’S BEST FRIENDS WIFE’S AGENT! OR GIVE INGRID A CALL. Whoever you are calling…. DO IT NOW! OH, AND ONE MORE THING… ASK EM’ TO STACK EM’ AND MAX EM’

Be sure to get the MAX possible of UM and UIM coverage. Then ask them to stack them. That’s right. You can have your uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage stacked, effectively doubling your coverage in the event of an accident. DO WE NEED TO RECAP? NO? WONDERFUL…. because at this point you should be busy making a phone call! In all seriousness. We are extremely passionate about being sure all Motorcyclists are fully aware of the importance of UM and UIM Insurance. If you ride motorcycles, do it not only for your protection but for your loved ones as well. Information courtesy of Insurance-Research.org

WILL RIDE TO EAT

W

By Ron and Sandy Giddis

e are now in the time of year when we have cold days followed by a few warm days. On those warm days, when I can, I get my motorcycle out and do some riding. If you’re in the Sevierville or Pigeon Forge, TN area, a good place to start or finish a ride is the new Black Rifle Coffee Company located at 1836 Parkway, Sevierville, TN. 37862 On March 12th, owners Chris Linnert and Billy Rogers held their official grand opening, complete with the singing of the National Anthem and posting colors. Along with a fantastic cup of coffee, you can enjoy a delicious breakfast croissant or pastry. I recommend the cream cheese Danish. Black Rifle Coffee Company (BRCC) is a Veteran founded coffee company serving premium coffee to people who love America. Founded in 2014, by Green Beret Evan Hafer, Black Rifle develops their explosive roast profiles with the same mission focus they learned while serving in the military. BRCC is committed to supporting veterans, active-duty military, first re22

Let's Ride

KENTUCKY Indian Rider Bill

L

ooking for a ride in Eastern Kentucky that is along its historic Country Music Highway (KY-23), with over twenty notable points of interest, Butchers HollerLoretta Lynn’s birthplace in Van Lear, being one of the most notable, then the Bootlegger’s Shuffle is it. The Bootlegger is one of 29 recognized trails in Kentucky’s Appalachian region. Coming in with 106 miles, the trail follows some of the original Moonshine bootlegger runs from Tennessee and deep into Kentucky. The trial officially starts/ends in Pikeville, but if you ride like I do, just jump on and enjoy the ride. For those who are a bit more organized, the Whitley County Riders Group, in partnership with Backroads of Appalachia, have developed one of the best route maps to date-their Trail Card. What puts the Trail Card above other riding aids is that it’s designed to accommodate both the tactile and visual needs of riders. It’s a laminated durable card with a visual representation of APRIL 2022

the trail and for detailed information, it has a QR Code to scan. As we are inundated with everything telephone App, this is that hold-out rebellious piece that still allows the user to do some old school map reading. Even if we have to put our glasses on to do it. And as it’s pretty much indestructible, it’s made to be stuffed in your saddle bag, tank pouch or back pocket. The QR Code is easily accessed so that one can plan for those stops and points of interest along the way. Super easy. And as a bonus, the card has additional trails that are identified via the QR Code so that one can plan multiple rides in the same region. And wait, there’s more (que your favorite TV infomercial), the card is double sided. Yep-there’s another map overlay trail on the back. As the entire system of trails continues to develop, so will the Ride Cards via the QR code link. For up-to-date information and where to pick up the Trail Cards please visit Fb-WhitleyCountyMotorcycleGroup.

THE LONGEST RESCUE

and compliance. The whole production was just that, a rehearsed show to prove that our U.S. military men had been captured and were being held responsible for their actions against a peaceloving people. The people’s Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

In recognition of National POW Month, it is an honor to pay respect to those who were former POW’s as well as those MIA. There are many stories and accounts that shape our perception of what it would have been like to be captured, held prisoner, maltreated to include daily torture, and resigning your fate when you hear “prepare to die for your country” coming from a cellmate. As a young boy I recall seeing black and white TV broadcasts of men in striped pajamas. Their heads bowed not out of respect, but out of fear

Those broadcasts were not meant to inform and my interest was piqued. During the 70’s the news reported bits and pieces of truth and the prescribed propaganda we, as a Nation, were supposed to accept. It was hard to really understand what it was all about, and questions lingered with me for years. Decades later, as a man with a twenty-two-year Air Force Career behind me, my questions were answered. And by a man who knew the truth. A subject matter expert. I met Capt. William “Billy” Robinson. The longest held enlisted POW of the Vietnam war. Being held captive for 7.5 years, 2,703 days to be exact, no enlisted man in American Military History has been held longer than him. I met Bill at a Veterans gathering a few years ago. The gathering was a workshop designed to offer resources to Veteran’s. There were the obligatory representatives from the VA, American Legion, VFW, and a host of other Veterans service organizations in attendance. All good stuff. And then the guest speaker, a big man favoring a leg, approached the lectern. He began by telling of his service in the Air Force; enlisted to break away from a predetermined life working in the cotton mills of Roanoke Rapids, NC. Such work had served his family well, but it wasn’t for him. And then he said it. His rough life as a child and an adolescent had helped to prepare him for captivity. Captivity?? In an instant

APRIL 2022

I was fixated on his every word and I don’t think I breathed for the next 30 minutes. Bill joined the Air Force in 1961 and became a helicopter crew chief. After attending basic training and the requisite technical schools that taught him his trade, he was off to his first duty station in Korea. As an E-2 he was transferred to Thailand to serve with the Air Rescue and Recovery unit. The predecessor to our current day Pararescue squadrons. That Others May Live. In September of 1965, his rescue crew, call sign “Dutchy 41”, was dispatched to save a downed F-105 pilot. His helicopter received heavy small arms fire and was shot down. There was no opportunity to escape or evade as the Vietcong quickly overcame the air crew. And so began his journey, his life, as a POW at the age of twentytwo. At the lectern, Bill confidently recalls his captivity, and he tells the personal stories of his fellow prisoners because they can’t or won’t. He is their collective voice. As all prisoners were assigned a number based on their shoot-down date, Bill believes he was around number twelve or so. He tells of his days at the prison camps. The Zoo, where the torture method of “the ropes” was perfected. Prisoners would have their legs and arms shackled and bound together from behind and their bodies were then lifted by an overhead rope so that their entire weight was only a few inches above their beds. The pain was excruciating, and Bill received this frequently, as did other prisoners. It was the favored interrogation technique. He also spent time in The Briarpatch, New Guy Village, Plantation, Skid Row, Dirty Bird, and the infamous Hanoi Hilton. He went on to mention when John McCain-USN, was captured and delivered to the cellblock for his introductory beating to set the tone of things to come- the dehumanization of captivity. And through all the horror one can imagine, starvation, sleep deprivation, torture and the relentless phycological brainwashing, the interrogation and indoctrination they all endured, he deems himself lucky. Lucky that he was captured by the NVA and sent to an organized camp. At the time there were rogue squads of militants, Laotians and the Pathet Lao, that captured

APRIL 2022

American flyers and traded them for food, ammunition, and labor. These rogue units more often than not, executed their war prizes after their usefulness had expired, or died from disease, and those men became MIA’s. Their fate sealed to history. Their families never knowing, never having closure. In that regard, Bill was lucky. After the workshop had ended, I had an opportunity to speak with Bill and I told him about my youthful days watching men like him on TV. I told him that I had met Commander Richard Stratton-USN, a fellow POW, at a barbershop in Rhode Island in the mid 90’s. Bill chuckled and said we called him “Beak” because his nose was broken so many times. Commander Stratton, the first pilot to be captured in 1967, was used as a prop during a North Vietnamese press conference. Stratton, like many others, underwent immediate and prolonged torture. He endured cigarette burns, beatings, and countless applications of ‘the ropes’ before making a taped confession of his war crimes on National TV. After his release in 1973, Bill received a field promotion to the Rank of Captain and continued his service as a maintenance officer. Retiring in 1984, with a career of 23 years behind him, Bill spends his days as a guest speaker traveling across the United States. His book, The Longest Rescue, is a comprehensive biography of his life before and after his capture. Captain Robinson was the first enlisted man to receive The Air Force Cross. He was also awarded a Silver Star, Legion of Merit, the POW Medal, two Purple Hearts and seventeen other decorations. Salute to Captain Robinson and our former POW’s. And never forget our MIA’s. They still serve. Please visit GetMoreInfo@ ThunderRoadsTennessee.com to share your story or comment. Top

THAT’S A WRAP! A few highlights from Daytona Beach Bike Week 2022

A

nother Daytona Bike Week has come and gone. Another 300,000 plus visitors passed through Daytona Beach and neighboring areas for ten days in March. After Covid concerns in 2021, attendance was up for the 81st Bagger Winner Annual Celebration. Not only the riders but vendors and performers as well. Of course, mother nature was not going to miss out on all the fun as she sprinkled her dominance amongst the festivities. At times, torrential downpours and others a glimmer of sun. Regardless of the weather, bikers from all over the nation poured into the area to show off their Big Wheels, Big Voices, and…well, Big Ballz. From Concerts, Bagger Racing, Bike Burning, Wall of Death Riding, and High in the Sky Acrobatics, Daytona did not disappoint. Rumor has it that next year they may even introduce Draw Bridge Jumping! We know one particularly ballzy rider that will not be making it into that winner’s circle! So, whether you are younger or older, love custom or vintage, one big wheel or three, Daytona Bike Week embraces an array of motorcycle enthusiasts and is sure not to disappoint. Until next year. Ride safely and be kind to one another.

There are always a variety of bikes on display, some treasures you just happen upon at the local gas pump.

Rhett Rotten’s Wall of Death show is always a favorite. The fact that these beautiful vintage motorcycles are used in the performance never ceases to amaze us.

APRIL 2022

Whether it was incredible live music, or ‘high in the sky’ nail-biting stunts, Daytona Beach Bike Week always keeps folks entertained.

The traditional ‘Burning of the Bike’ at Fastlane Capmground is an annual tradition that leaves viewers tear-filled and amazed. The massive wooden structure is on display all week for attendees to write the names of loved ones lost. It is then set ablaze as the crowd watches and the memories of those names are sent upward in an emotional, breathtaking ball of fire.

DRAW BRIDGE JUMPING….NEW SPORT? The Main Street Bridge was shut down after a Georgia man crashed through the safety arm as the draw bridge was going up. Fortunately, the rider was able to jump off his bike before it went over the bridge, only being saved by his trailer getting caught, leaving the motorcycle dangling until help arrived.
