ell it was a tough start to the riding season with rallies, demo days, bike nights and events being canceled along with the closures of state parks, restaurants and bars, but it seems things will begin to return to some sort of normalcy soon. Today Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced a phased reopening starting next week and that a majority of the state’s businesses will be allowed to reopen on May 1st after the state’s stayat-home order expires on April 30th. Most businesses in 89 of the state’s 95 counties will be allowed to re-open at the start of May. However, Lee said that many would operate with social distancing measures in place, but it’s unclear at the moment what social distancing measures will be required of reopening businesses. Tennessee joins Texas as one of the earliest states to reopen its “nonessentials” businesses after about a month and a half of shutdown orders. For us riders, it’s a little easier to practice “social distancing” as long as we aren’t traveling anywhere, only we have contact with our gear and our bike. We can also pack gloves and disinfectant for when we need to gas up. The roads are basically empty which means it is a lot safer to ride because the main danger of oncoming traffic isn’t there. The roads are more open than we have ever seen them. There is a natural part of us that thinks for some reason the rules suddenly don’t apply. Pretty much nothing will stop us from riding. Nobody gets into riding motorcycles for fun because they like rules and doing what they’re told, lol! There is nothing quite like the therapy of riding a motorcycle. Riding a motorcycle clears the mind, calms the soul, and gives us emotional happiness. These are things we surely need more than ever, but as we begin this phased reopening, keep in mind, we are not out of the woods just yet. If you go for a ride, be smart. We should conduct ourselves as safe and responsible motorcyclists. We hope you and your family are safe and healthy, and we hope to see you out on the road and at events soon! “A PERVERTED GOSPEL” Gal. 1:6-7 “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from Him that called you into the Grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.” These Jews at Galatia had been converted to Christianity, but the Jewish religion was telling them that they had to keep all the Jewish laws at the same time, thus bringing in the term “legalism.” Paul was telling them that he was “shocked” at how quick they would depart from “the Grace of Christ.” Mixing legalism with the “Grace of Christ,” is a “Perverted Gospel.” Gal. 2:16 “Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ.” Vs. 21 “I do not frustrate the Grace of Christ; for if righteousness came by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.” Anything that is performance based, self-effort, selfrighteousness, self-justification is a Perverted Gospel! Gal. 3:1 “O foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, that you should not obey the truth.” O foolish modern day Christians, what demonic lie has tricked you into not believing God’s word? Who told you that you needed more than Christ? Salvation is not Jesus plus something else, it’s all just about Jesus. God gave the Jewish people the Ten Commandments (the law) knowing that the Commandments were impossible to keep, but God wanted to show them that they needed a savior, that their self-righteousness would never be good enough. VS. 3 “Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now made perfect by the flesh (by legalism)?” Coming to church, reading your bible, praying, doing good deeds will not make you a Christian, however that is what Christians do! What makes you a Christian is believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, that’s it! It’s the blood of Christ that makes you righteousness, not trying to keep the commandments. So I am asking the same questions that Paul asked; 1. Did you get saved by the Holy Spirit or did you just go through the legal motions 2. Are you made righteous by your good works or by the blood of Christ? VS.13 “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the MAY 2020

law.” Rom.6:14 “…for ye are no longer under the law, but under Grace.” God has always wanted an intimate relationship with man, not a religious relationship. 2 Cor.5:21 “For He has made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.” Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

JEFFERSON DAVIS STATE HISTORIC SITE

D

uring the uncomfortable house arrest for this Covid-19 pandemic, we all feel the need for day rides, for “wind therapy”. For us in Tennessee/Kentucky, the Jefferson Davis State Historic Site presents an out of the way destination. Near the site of his birth, a 351 foot obelisk was erected in honor of the president of the Confederacy. It is the tallest concrete obelisk in the world. Located at 258 PembrokeFairview Road (US Hwy 68-80), Pembroke, Ky., in addition to the obelisk, there is a Jefferson Davis museum and a gift shop. During normal times, an elevator ride to the top gives a spectacular view of the surrounding area. Unfortunately during the pandemic, both the museum and elevator are closed. Still, the grounds are open, the parking lot empty, and the view of the monument is impressive. Having been built during 1917-1924 and on the National Register of Historic Places, the monument has survived the attempts to rewrite history by eliminating all confederate memorials. Most know Jefferson Davis as the president of the confederacy, however, he was a West Point graduate war hero during the Mexican-American War, US Representative, and later, Senator from Mississippi, Secretary of War under Franklin Pierce, and married Sarah Taylor, daughter of future president Zackary Taylor (against his wishes). Unfortunately he and Sarah both caught malaria and she died three months into the marriage. During the Battle of Buena Vista in the Mexican-American War, while leading the Mississippi Rifles, the only unit carrying rifles, rather than muskets, Davis was shot in the foot. Interestingly enough (to me anyway) he was carried to safety by Robert H. Chilton. As a reward for his bravery, Davis was offered and declined a promotion to brigadier general. After the Civil War Davis was arrested and imprisoned for two years until he was released on $100,000 bail and went to Montreal, Quebec to join his family before being pardoned by a presidential pardon issued by Andrew Johnson and amnesty for all who participated in the “insurrection”. MAY 2020

He died in 1889 in New Orleans and is buried in the Hollywood Cemetery, in Richmond, VA. Another adventure near the Memorial is the Stateline Whisky Tour. A 30 mile ride takes you from Old Glory Distillery in Clarksville, TN to MB Roland Distillery in Pembroke, KY (a few miles from the Memorial), to the Casey Jones Distillery in Hopkinsville, KY. You can tour and taste at each distillery for a small fee, receive a passport and shot glass, and at the third distillery, receive a barrel stave to display your shot glasses. Again, unfortunately tours and tastings are discontinued for the pandemic, but you can support the distillers by purchasing some of their varied spirits. Don’t want them to close up due to the shutdown! Remember this is Amish Country. Watch out for the buggies and you might also see a farmer plowing with a two or four horse hitch. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! (Remember the ER’s are already FULL) Cooper

PROPER TRAINING & PISTOL DRILLS

G

ood afternoon fellow bikers, American patriots and Second Amendment freedom lovers! I hope that you have been getting in a lot of riding this spring. Soon, we will be celebrating Memorial Day weekend – a solemn weekend to remember those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. Hopefully, you will come out and see me at Smoky Mountain Thunder – over Memorial Day Weekend. I will be with the great folks from Thunder Roads Magazine and should be easy to find. For the past four years, you have counted on me for information on firearms, self-defense, politics, Second Amendment news and concealed carry. This month’s article is about proper training and pistol drills. If you carry concealed, for self-defense, you must practice. Unfortunately, I have talked to many individuals with Handgun Carry Permits (HCP) who went through the process of buying a pistol, applying for their HCP, getting fingerprinted, going through the background check and passing their live fire qualification – only to never practice again. These individuals might actually be safer without carrying a firearm than with it. Inevitably, if you are ever in a situation where you need to protect yourself, you will be under severe stress and your actions need to happen from muscle memory – not stress. That muscle memory is only developed by practice. Dry Fire Drills Living within the city limits, I cannot practice with live fire at home. My preferred range is a 45-minute ride – which is something I do not do every week. But, as I have learned over the years, the best practice routine is dry fire drills. They are simple, and because you are not firing live ammunition, they are free. My practice routine is very simple. I practice with all of my different carry pistols. Start by removing the magazine and ejecting the round in the barrel (if you do not carry your pistol with a cartridge in the barrel, you have a paperweight – not a self-defense firearm). Double-check that the pistol is in fact cleared and then triple-check. We all know that many deaths and injuries have come from unloaded guns, correct? Remove all ammunition from the area you will be drilling in. Yes, go overboard. Be safe. Stay alive. First, I practice drawing from my holster. I dress the way I would in public, with a shirt over my holstered pistol. I swipe my shirt away, draw, bring my pistol to low-ready, re-holster. I repeat this for a total of ten repetitions. Then I will repeat the drill, swiping the shirt away, draw to low-ready, bring the pistol up to high-ready and squeeze the trigger. Re-holster and repeat for a total of ten repetitions. This builds your muscle memory around drawing, coming to low-ready, high-ready and squeezing off a shot. Next, I use my Mantis (https://mantisx.com) with my smart phone to practice trigger control. The Mantis system tracks barrel movement before the trigger pull, and afterwards. Practicing with the Mantis is

actually better for me than live range fire. With instantaneous feedback, you can actually learn better trigger control, waste less ammunition and improve your live fire groupings. I practice with my dry-fire techniques way more often than I go to the range. Live Fire Drills While I do practice what I preach with dry fire training, there is still something special about the smell of cordite in the morning – in other words sending lead downrange. I like to feel the recoil and to see the physical evidence of where my shots are going. When I go to the range, I will typically start with shooting 50 – 100 rounds at paper. During this time, I am not looking to blast the bullseye out but to make sure my groupings are consistent, and my pistols are all functioning properly. Those of you that are only concerned about tearing the 10-ring up, are missing the purpose of practicing for self-defense: a well placed first shot followed by an equally well-placed follow up shot. In a real-life situation, you are not trying to literally shoot out the eye of an attacker, but to incapacitate them quickly. This is done through ventilating their centermass, making it impossible for them to breathe. From the paper target range, I go to the tactical pistol training area. At most ranges this is the only area you can practice drawing, rapid fire shooting and tactical firing positions. I load five rounds in each of two magazines so I can practice a quick magazine change. With my pistol holstered, I walk up to the area I plan to fire from, get set in my isosceles stance, deliberately draw, concentrating on technique, take aim and fire the five shots quickly - concentrating on follow up shots on different targets. I do a quick magazine change, pull the slide back to put the pistol in battery and fire the next five shots. I will typically run through about 100 rounds of ammunition at the tactical range. The benefit of tactical pistol practice is the instant feedback the metal plates provide. After years of training in self-defense, there is no substitute for practice. But you must practice smart. You must do a lot of dry fire practice – at least five times as much as live fire practice. Your muscle memory and trigger control will become much better ingrained from the dry fire drills. And remember, without continual practice, you will not be prepared if the unthinkable happens. Until next month, #LIVEtoRide and #RIDEtoLIVE. I hope to see you at Smoky Mountain Thunder over Memorial Day Weekend. Mike Noirot https://TheGreyBeardBiker gbb@TheGreyBeardBiker.com

Mary lost her husband almost four years ago and still hasn’t gotten out of her depression and mourning, as if had just happened a week ago. Her daughter, Sara, is constantly calling and urging her to get ‘back into the world of the living.’ Finally, Mary agrees to a fix-up that Sara had arranged of a nice man that was the warehouse Manager at work. Mary and Fred went out for coffee and hit it off immediately! They took to one another fast and after six weeks of dating he asked Mary to come spend the weekend at his hunting cabin. Mary and Sara both knew what that meant. Their first night at the cabin Mary stood before Fred nude except for a pair of black panties while he was totally in the buff. He asked gently, “Why the black panties only?” and Mary replied, “My breasts are yours’ to fondle, my body for you to explore, but down there I am still in mourning.” The next night there Mary stands with her black panties only and Fred is again in the buff except that he has a black condom on his erection. Mary looks at Fred and inquires “What’s with the black condom?” to which Fred ever so gently replies, “I’d like to offer up my condolences.” -------------------------------------------------------------COVID-19 Pick-Up Lines (corny but cute) Is that hand sanitizer in your pocket or are you just happy to be within 6 feet of me? Since all the public libraries are closed, I’m checking you out instead. Baby, do you need toilet paper? Cause’ I could sure be your Prince Charmin. You can’t spell quarantine without “U R A Q T”. -------------------------------------------------------------A young newlywed couple have been trying for almost a year to have a baby. Finally, the adorable little blonde announces to her husband, “Honey, I have super-duper great news!! We’re pregnant, AND...we’re having twins!!” The husband is totally overjoyed, picks his wife up gently and swings her around. “Honey, that’s the most wonderful news ever, but how do you know so soon we’re having twins?” She nods her head yes and says, “Well, I was clever and bought the twin pack pregnancy test and they both came out positive!”. Farmer John once lived on a quiet rural highway but as time went by, the traffic slowly built up and eventually got so heavy and so fast that his free range chickens were being run over, at a rate of three to six a week. So Farmer John called the local police station to complain, “You’ve got to do something about all these people driving so fast and killing all my chickens,” he said to the local police officer. “What do you want me to do?” asked the policeman. “I don’t care, just do something about those crazy drivers!” So the next day the policeman had the Council erect a sign that said: SLOW: SCHOOL CROSSING Three days later Farmer John called the policeman and said, “You’ve still got to do something about these drivers. The school crossing’ sign seems to make them go even faster!” So again, the policeman phoned the Council, and they put up a new sign: SLOW: CHILDREN AT PLAY That really sped them up. So Farmer John called and said, “Your signs are no good. Can I put up my own sign?” The policeman in order to get Farmer John off his back said, “Sure. Put up your own dang sign.” The phone calls to the Police Station stopped, but curiosity got the better of the Officer, so he called Farmer John. How’s the problem with the speeding drivers. Did you put up your sign?” “Oh, I sure did, replied Farmer John, and not one chicken has been killed since then. The policeman was really curious and thought he’d better go out and take a look at the sign. He also thought the sign might be something the Police could use elsewhere to slow drivers down. So he drove out to Farmer John’s house. His jaw dropped the moment he saw the sign. ‘Nudist Colony’ ‘Slow down and watch for chicks!’ --------------------------------------------------------------Who is your real Friend? This actually works! If you don’t believe it, just try this experiment. Put your dog and your ole’ lady in the trunk of your car for about an hour. When you open up the trunk, which one is Really Happy to see you? Told ya’ so. --------------------------------------------------------------There’s SO much going on with this Covid-19.... I’m gonna’ ask my Momma if that offer to slap me into next year is still on the table. --------------------------------------------------------------I once dated a girl with a twin. People asked me how I could tell them apart? Simple; Jill painted her nails purple and John had a dick.

Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee and Kentucky: As I lean out my front door and yell “HELLO,” I’m rewarded by the lonely echoes of my own voice repeating hello, hello, hello!!! No human voice responds as my wife and I are isolating in the woods of our farm. My wife feeds birds, deer and turkey so I hear various birds when I go out. The deer and turkey tend to be more secretive in their communications until the boys start looking for girlfriends and then things get a little noisy and rambunctious. An owl who lives within shouting distance gives out hoots on occasion. After an adult beverage I often answer him looking for him to WTF me back!! While I wouldn’t consider myself a radical prepper, I do like to keep some extra food for emergencies and make sure I have a loaded magazine and extra rounds in case they’re needed. I never really considered that we would be homebound for many weeks waiting for a mysterious virus to run its destructive course. We regularly go to the local grocery for essentials and, Yes – Toilet Paper!! We also hit the local building materials store, hardware, CO-OP and attend various meetings and gatherings. Soooo, there I was, just running around minding my own business and doing my thing getting ready for spring to bust out and WHAM!!! I get hit with social distancing, safer at home and massive toilet paper shortages. OMG!! What do we do now??? Luckily, we do a big shopping trip once a month and try to lay in most of what we need for the month. We have a small local grocery but a lot of what we need requires driving anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half one way. Making a once a month big shopping trip saves a lot of gas and time. My wife made a trip out to stock up on things that would allow us isolate for up to six weeks and we have just gone back to business on the farm. If we need something, we get on-line and order it in. The tough part is being distanced from family but we don’t want to take a chance on getting them sick and they don’t want to get us sick. Got to be safe!! My wife grew up on a farm in Florida and can grow anything. Her thumb is about as green as a thumb can get. She knows canning inside and out. There is nothing better than growing your own tomatoes, canning them

MAY 2020

and enjoying them for several years. We’ve eaten canned tomatoes that were three or more years old and they taste fresh picked and delicious. Well, rather than get caught a little short on the shelf for food, we’ve bumped up our garden and are planting enough things to last us a year or more so the next time this happens, and it will, we’ll be able to avoid the drama of congested shopping isles, elbow rubbing and breathing infected Covid breath. When World War I broke out, Charles Lathrop Pack organized the National War Garden Commission to encourage Americans to help the war effort by planting, fertilizing, harvesting and storing their own fruits and vegetables so more food could be exported to our allies. When World War II began, the need for food around the world again took center stage and people across the country were encouraged to grow food in their back yards. It’s a littleknown fact that 80% of the food consumed in the United States during WWII was home grown in back yards. Big commercial farms produced food that mostly went to our service members fighting the war and allies who couldn’t grow much because of the war. In an age when doctors are warning about anti-biotic resistant bacteria and new viruses that may be tougher than the ones of the past, doesn’t it make sense for everyone to plant a little something and learn to can food? We can vegetables, fruit and meat. We also vacuum pack rice, pasta, beans and dried herbs. My wife makes spaghetti sauce, salsa, stews and soups and cans it all. We’re going to harvest enough things to can and get us through until our garden comes in next year then do it again. A new world paradigm calls for new ways of thinking!! Even if you live in an apartment you can grow something in a pot or buy a box of veggies at the farmers market and can it. Survive!!! Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. You can comment at bousle19@comcast.net Bulldog * My monthly column reflects my personal point of view and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Publishers of this magazine, but they, like me, acknowledge the sacrifices made for the privilege of Freedom of Speech, therefore, they gratefully let me rant. Thank you for reading my rants. Hope my opinions don’t offend anyone, but we all should be grateful for the right to have free opinions.

GLOBAL MOTORCYCLE MARKET IMPACTED BY COVID-19

“When the car business sneezes, motorcycles catch a cold,” is an old saying in the motorcycle industry, so it should come as no surprise that as the Coronavirus pandemic has negatively impacted automobile sales, it has hurt motorcycle sales even worse. Worldwide, motorcycle sales have plummeted nearly fifty percent, with hard-hit Italy reporting a 69% reduction. In India, one of the world’s strongest bike markets, sales were down some forty percent in the first quarter of 2020, and Q2 numbers portend more dismal numbers as lockdowns and factory shutdowns persist.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Coalition of Motorcyclists 35th annual NCOM Convention has been rescheduled for the middle of October at the Marriott Indianapolis East (7202 East 21st Street), the same location in Indiana as previously planned.

China, where the virus started, not only has numerous motorcycle manufacturers who are suffering, but is also home to many parts manufacturers that other companies around the globe rely on to continue building their bikes, causing extreme disruptions to the supply chain.

“At this time, the NCOM board urges you and your families to follow the advice of the health departments and keep yourselves safe,” said James “Doc” Reichenbach II, Chairman of the NCOM Board of Directors, adding that “Losing one person is one too many.”

Here in the U.S., financial analysts forecast the hit to Harley-Davidson sales will be about 25%, according to Reuters. The Milwaukeebased bike maker has suspended production, laid off staff and implemented salary cuts.

Stay tuned for further details as NCOM continues to monitor this deadly global outbreak and its impact on the motorcycling community.

Even those motorcycle dealerships that have remained open have reduced hours and staffing and, even worse, are missing out on peak springtime sales.

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES CONTINUES TO INFORM Bikers have always had a reputation for watching each other’s backs, and during these trying times the need to band together is even more critical, so know that you can continue to count on the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) to keep you informed and up-todate on a wide range of issues of importance to motorcycling and its associated lifestyle. Through the monthly NCOM Biker Newsbytes column, the organization will strive to provide timely and accurate information to the riding community, and we encourage all motorcycle publications, websites and internet forums to reprint and share this news source with your readers and fellow concerned riders. REAL ID POSTPONED AMID CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC Travelers have myriad other things to worry about, thanks to the COVID-19 virus, but federally compliant driver’s licenses are not among them for now. Real ID is the federally compliant driver’s license that was, until recently, supposed to be required for boarding a domestic flight beginning October 1st (if you didn’t use some other form of acceptable identification, such as a passport), but is now postponed until Oct. 1, 2021. The desire for a more secure form of identification is based on legislation that became law in 2005, on the recommendation of the 9/11 Commission. QUOTABLE QUOTE: “Life is a four-letter word.” ~ Lenny Bruce (1925-1966), comedian and social critic
