At the end of April, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced the end of statewide public health orders and signed Executive Order 80 to address economic and regulatory functions. EO 80 also ends the local authority to issue mask requirements in 89 of the state’s 95 counties directed by the state health department. “COVID-19 is now a managed public health issue in Tennessee and no longer a statewide public health emergency,” said Gov. Lee. “As Tennesseans continue to get vaccinated, it’s time to lift remaining local restrictions, focus on economic recovery and get back to business in Tennessee.” Hallelujah!!! Well, by the time you read this, we will have covered the 2021 Tennessee Motorcycles and Music Revival and right after that, the 21st Annual Smoky Mountain Thunder Memorial Ride, so be sure and look for an article about both of these awesome events in an upcoming issues of Thunder Roads® Tennessee. June 21st the Ride Your Motorcycle to Work Day will celebrate its 30th anniversary. The goal of the annual Ride to Work Day is to advocate the use of motorcycles. And not only for transportation, but also to show the public the utility of riding each day. In particular, how motorcycles reduce traffic congestion and how much less space they take to park. avid Crockett State Park is located in Lawrenceville, TN, about a 90 minutes ride from Nashville and 2 hours east of Memphis. Sitting on 1,319 acres, it features exhibits on Crockett’s life, the site of his enterprises, a small waterfall where his mill sat and Lake Lindsey. It has a restaurant, boat dock (with kayak and row boat rentals), pool, luxurious cabins, hiking and beautiful scenery. This is a park for leisurely riding or just vegging out. David (Davy) Crockett was born in Limestone (northeast Tennessee) and lived his life in Tennessee until his ill-fated trip to Texas. He was brought up poor and was often an indentured servant to pay off his father’s debts. As a result, he spent his political career fighting for the rights of settlers to keep their land. Although we think of Davy as a frontiersman in buckskins and a coonskin cap and he did wear such attire when scouting for the army or hunting, he was much more. Upon moving to Lawrence County he served as justice of the peace, a colonel in the militia, state representative and after moving to Memphis, several terms in the US Congress. On Shoal Creek in the park, he built a gunpowder mill, gristmill, and distillery. When a flood wiped out his
enterprises, he moved to Memphis. Crockett fought President Andrew Jackson’s ideas in Congress, one of which was the resettlement of Native Americans. Ironically, the Trail of Tears runs through the park bearing his name. His death at the Battle of the Alamo is well known, but whether he died fighting or was captured and executed is not known. But his legacy will live on in American history as being a great man. His famous motto “Be always sure you’re right, then go ahead”, would serve us well today. On our way home we stopped at Rebel Bar and Grill in Columbia. This biker bar claims to be home to the “World Famous Mule Balls” (meatballs with a center of cream cheese and jalapeno) and also, great cheeseburgers. I can attest to the tastiness of both. They feature live music and, glad we missed it, Karaoke. While we were there, they had a band made up of youngsters, Derailed Band, who did a great job of Southern Rock including Skynrd, Eagles, etc. And, importantly, the beer was reasonable and cold! They rode so much while pregnant with her, they had to park her dads Wide Glide outside her bedroom window running to put her to sleep after she was born. For Christmas, before she turned 4 her grandparents Billie & Jamie got her first bike and she’s been burning the tires off since. Her entire family rides, parents, grandparents, great grandpa, aunts, uncles, great aunts, so to say it’s in her blood would be very accurate. She has two little sisters, Whitleigh that’s 4, and Elizabeth that is almost 1. She can’t wait til they have their own bike to ride with her. She has claimed her Mamaw’s Road Glide and says she’s going to ride it when she is 12! Knowing her, she probably will. She loves hanging out in her dads shop trying to kick start his shovel head. He tells her once she can kick-start it she can ride it. CONCEALED CARRY WHILE RIDING By Scott High
T
here is a question we get asked from time to time usually by newer permit
holders, so we thought we’d answer it here. What is the best handgun to concealed carry while riding? The answer is we don’t know. I know what I carry, and it’s the best one for me, but the only one that can answer that question is you. The first step in choosing a firearm should be deciding what your realistic budget is, keep in mind you usually get what you pay for. Most shops have layaway or you can save up, but I don’t think personal protection is a good place to pinch pennies. Inexpensive guns tend to suffer from reliability problems, and have fewer accessories like holsters, sights, and extra magazines available. When you have decided your price range you should decide how you are going to carry. In Tennessee, permit holders have the option to open carry, but concealed is my preference. I don’t want to mess up a good ride because I have to explain to the officer that do I have a permit, or have a little old lady veer into me because she’s staring at my evil sidearm. However you decide to carry, a secure holster is a must, watching your shiny new handgun bouncing and sliding down the road because you just stuck it in your waistband or cheap one size fits most holster would not be good or safe. Once you have decided how you are going to carry it and what your budget is you can begin the search. Deciding on a caliber isn’t as important as it used to be, modern ammunition has just about made that question irrelevant. There are really good personal defense rounds available for almost every caliber out there and the differences are getting smaller all the time. You can pore over all of the dimensions, statistics, and photo comparisons you want, but there’s no way to really know how the gun will feel in a holster or in your hand until you actually try it. I like to go to a full service gun shop with a range on site like our page sponsor Tennessee Gun Country. You can rent several different guns and even the same gun in different sizes and calibers and spend some quality time with each one to see which ones you like and can shoot well. Most of the popular handguns from quality manufacturers come in at least 3, sometimes 4 sizes. There are no industry standards that define what a full size, compact, sub compact or micro gun should be but here are some general guidelines. Full size, or duty guns are usually the biggest, and also usually the
easiest to shoot due to the longer sight radius, added mass to help control recoil, and increased magazine capacity, but because of their size they are much harder to conceal. Compacts are usually slightly smaller than full size in every dimension, in fact, most compact guns are just chopped down versions of their full size brothers. Shorter barrels and shorter grips with the smaller magazine capacities but similar in almost every way. Some even share internal parts with the larger versions. They are a little easier to conceal than a full size and they are still very easy to shoot well. Sub compacts in most cases are different guns and not just cut down versions of larger guns. They have smaller magazines and shorter barrels and they are usually much lighter so recoil can start to become a problem depending on the caliber you choose. The subs are very easy to conceal and can be carried almost anywhere on your person you would like. Shooting them well isn’t difficult, but they do have a shorter sight radius which makes distance shooting more of a challenge to do well. The smallest are the micro compacts. These are sometimes referred to as “Pocket Pistols”. There are some really good pocket guns, and no you don’t have to carry them in your pocket but you can. If you have larger hands some of these guns are too small, they have very small magazines, the short barrels make them hard to aim so some don’t even bother with sights and the light weight can make recoil a problem, but the biggest knock I hear against the micro compact guns is magazine capacity. There are countless studies that show most personal defense shootings happen inside of 21 feet and 3 or fewer rounds are fired so magazine capacity doesn’t seem to be as important as some believe. So the short answer to the question “what is the best handgun to concealed carry while riding?” is whatever you are most comfortable with!

“THE BELIEVER’S AUTHORITY” Gen. 1:26 & 28 “God said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have Dominion.” Matt.28:18 “All power is given unto me in heaven and in the earth.” Luke 9:1 “He called his disciples and gave them power and authority over all devils.” Luke 10:19 “Behold I give you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy.” God has given us “dominion, power and authority” over all sickness, poverty, addictions and devils, along with all this comes a responsibility. “To whom much is given, much is required.” We still keep asking God to save, heal, deliver and prosper us, then we wonder why it’s not happening? We keep asking God to do what He told us to do. Luke 10:9 “and heal the sick and say unto them the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.” Notice that He didn’t say “pray for the sick,” as a matter of fact, nowhere in the New Testament did Jesus ever tell us to “pray for the sick.” Also notice that Jesus said to “heal the sick” first as an order of service, then second; He said to preach the Word; “and say unto them that the Kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.” In the early Church they needed “signs & wonders” to persuade the religious Jews over to Christianity. The modernday religious churches could use some “signs & wonders.” Acts 3:6 “Peter said silver & gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee.” In most churches today, Peter would have been kicked out of the church for making the statement; “but such as I have, give I thee.” Peter was just bold enough to believe Jesus when He said; “I give you all power, I give you authority, I give you dominion.” Peter already had everything he needed, he didn’t have to pray about it. 2 Peter 3: 9 “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” The next time you hear some religious preacher claim that the old statement; “If it be God’s will?” It is God’s will that we be
saved, healed, delivered, and prosperous. I think it’s time we stop praying about it and do something about it! We must stop asking God to do what He told us to do. Then and only then we will see the next great move of God. Matt.25: 14-29 “5 talent man, 2 talent man, & 1 talent man.” The master “gave to every man according to His several ability.” He gave to each man what he could handle. The 5-talent man doubled his 5 into 10. The 2-talent man doubled his 2 into 4, but the 1 talent man hid his lord’s money in the ground. What have we done with the “power, authority and dominion” that God has given us? Have we just prayed about it-dug a whole in the ground and hid it? Or have we doubled what God has given us? Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots: Have you heard a Joe Biden statement in front of cameras and media questioners?? Have you noticed he has a hard time with words, making sense and remembering what he is trying to say even though he has a teleprompter in front of him? Have you seen one of his performances when he just turns and starts to walk away and a questioner asks him a question and he turns and comes back to answer? Have you heard what he says when he does this??? He says he’ll probably get in trouble for doing it because he isn’t supposed to take questions after his statement!!! It’s my understanding that the President of the United States is the top position in government here. So, who is telling Joe Biden what he can and can’t do??? He is obviously having mental issues and going senile!! He doesn’t think he is in charge so who is in charge?? There seems to be a lot of evidence that someone other than President Joe Biden is making the decisions about what our country is going to do and that Joe Biden is just the fall guy who stands in front of the microphone!! Every past President I can remember has been the guy who made the final decisions a President makes. Joe Biden signed the order to stop the Keystone XL pipeline and to stop drilling on government land. The United States and the world run on petroleum. Your cars, trucks and motorcycles run on petroleum! Plastic is made with petroleum. Many homes in the Northeast section of the United States rely of heating oil in the winter. Road asphalt is made with petroleum!! Propane and natural gas are products of drilling for petroleum! The coating on electrical wire comes from petroleum. The oil in power transformers comes from petroleum! Paint and vinyl siding come from petroleum. The trucks that deliver everything you buy at the store run on petroleum. Did Joe Biden really decide to stop the pipeline or did he announce it as ordered?? Donald Trump made the United States self-sufficient and independent from foreign oil. Brain dead Joe was told to take major actions to stop that and again make the country dependent on foreign oil. He is signing all kinds of orders to make us use electric everything but electricity can’t power our transportation needs, cover a house or make a road!! If Joe isn’t really making the decisions and his controllers are pushing to stop the use of petroleum and they have control of the CIA, NSA and FBI, how do we really know the Colonial Pipeline hack and shutdown was really done by Russians?? These agencies tried to subvert President Donald Trump and have lied to the American public for many years. The justice department has been compromised. Where is John Durham and his investigation into Russiagate? Is it hard to believe that maybe the CIA and FBI hacked the Colonial Pipeline and blamed it on the Russians? How would we know. They have lied to us so much we don’t know if they are telling the truth or not!! They are becoming weapons of the Marxists!! The lies in the media are overwhelming. We’ve been told to wear masks outside and now it comes out that there is almost no risk at all
of transferring Covid when you are outdoors!! We are being paid extra money to stay unemployed by the federal government. The Marxists are printing and spending money like drunken sailors!! (No offense Navy folks, its just an old saying) You can see the effect of the stupid destructive stuff the Marxists are doing when you try to buy something. Prices are through the roof if you can even find what you’re after. Businesses can’t find workers and the Marxists are bringing hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants into the country and distributing them all across the country! Kamala Harris was put in charge of the border crisis but she can’t find the border!! Joe Biden bumbles through his comedy statements about how its not a problem. The Marxists want to federalize elections across the country and put more Marxists onto the Supreme Court. Bill Gates has a project to put chemicals in the air to reduce the amount of sunlight that gets to the ground with the intent of lowering the temperature of the earth. Who approved that? My garden needs sunlight and the month of May was a really cool month. It feels like a new attack on liberty and freedom every day!! I’m sure you see many things I haven’t listed. It’s pretty obvious their goal is the total destruction of America! It’s shocking that a majority of Americans are against what the Marxists are doing but seem willing to take it. Corporations and our nations schools are teaching critical race theory and open racism. Blatant lies but yet we still give our money to those same corporations and send our children to those Marxist indoctrination schools!! We still support professional sports that are subverting patriotism and national harmony. Listen to American Commentator Earl Pitts; “Wake UP America!!” Freedom is losing, inflation is taking hold, the dollar value is falling and a lot of Americans are still unquestionably watching the major media with their mouth open and sounding like Gomer Pyle – Golleeee!! Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. OREGON LANE SPLITTING BILL GOES TO THE GOVERNOR After years of legislative attempts, Oregon may soon join with neighboring California and a host of other states that have approved of lane splitting for motorcyclists. The state House of Representatives on Monday, May 17, gave its blessing to Senate Bill 574, a bipartisan proposal that allows motorcyclists to operate in between lanes of traffic under certain circumstances. After a 42-14 vote in the House, preceded by an 18-6 vote in the Senate, the bill now heads to the desk of Governor Kate Brown (D) for her consideration. According to one news source, SB 574 has received more testimony than nearly any other piece of legislation this session, as proponents flooded legislators’ inboxes clamoring for the idea. Their argument: That allowing motorcyclists to bend the normal rules during traffic jams would be good for both safety and improving congestion. Oregon state representative Ron Noble (R-McMinnville), who is himself a rider and who also carried the bill in the House, told Oregon Public Broadcasting KVAL; “It will provide me personally with another option to ride safe.” As described in a Legislative staff report: “Lane Filtering” is “meant to allow motorcycles to continue moving when the general flow of traffic is slowed or stopped, and is meant to prevent overheating of motorcycle engines, rider fatigue, and protect the safety of riders by preventing them from being rear-ended in areas with high levels of traffic congestion.”
Under SB 574, motorcyclists are allowed to split lanes only on multi-lane highways with a speed limit of at least 50 mph. When traffic slows to 10 mph or less on those roads, motorcyclists are permitted to ride between cars, at no more than 10 mph faster than the flow of traffic. The law does not apply in school zones or work zones. California has long allowed lane splitting, under different circumstances than Oregon’s bill, and Montana recently passed a law of its own. Utah allows lane filtering when traffic is stopped at an intersection. Hawaii permits motorcyclists to utilize the shoulder when traffic is congested. BIKER ANTI-PROFILING MEASURE INTRODUCED IN CONGRESS More than two years ago, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a nonbinding resolution condemning the discriminatory profiling of motorcyclists by law enforcement (S. Res. 154), and now the U.S. House of Representatives has once again introduced a similar bipartisan measure in the 117th Congress, H. Res. 366; “Promoting awareness of motorcyclist profiling and encouraging collaboration and communication with the motorcycle community and law enforcement officials to prevent instances of profiling.” Sponsored once again by Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI), the anti-profiling resolution was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on April 30, 2021 to thwart “the illegal use of the fact that a person rides a motorcycle or wears motorcycle related apparel as a factor in deciding to stop and question, take enforcement action, arrest, or search a person or vehicle with or without legal basis under the Constitution of the United States,” as profiling is defined in the resolution. H.R. 366 acknowledges nationwide motorcycle registrations “growing from 3,826,373 in 1997 to 13,158,100 in 2018,” and notes that “complaints surrounding motorcyclist profiling have been cited in all 50 States.” Co-sponsored by Congressman Michael Burgess (R-TX), Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (D-IL) and Congressman Mark Pocan (D-WI), the bipartisan resolution denotes three actionable items; (1) promotes increased public awareness on the issue of motorcyclist profiling; (2) encourages collaboration and communication with the motorcyclist community and law enforcement to engage in efforts to end motorcyclist profiling; and (3) urges State law enforcement officials to include statements condemning motorcyclist profiling in written policies and training materials. All concerned motorcyclists are encouraged to contact their Congressional Representatives to ask that they join their colleagues as a cosponsor of H.Res.366 and help put a stop to law enforcement unfairly targeting motorcycle riders for traffic stops, questioning and citations. In the meantime, efforts are underway to again include antiprofiling language among other pro-motorcycle provisions in the Biden Administration’s multi-trillion dollar federal highway bill. U.S. MOTORCYCLE SALES WAY UP New-model motorcycle sales among leading brands increased more than 37.2% in the first quarter of 2021, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council Retail Sales Report. The Q1 sales, compared to the same period last year, were up by double digits in

every category: on-highway, off-highway, dual-purpose, and scooter. "This is the fourth straight quarter of strong sales numbers, indicating continued and growing interest in riding among new and returning riders," said Erik Pritchard, MIC president and CEO. "Combine the new-motorcycle sales performance with the pace of tire sales and we know that more riders are putting on more miles.” Year-to-date sales of dual-purpose motorcycles were up the most, by 47%. Off-highway sales were up 45.4%. Scooter sales rose 34.6%, and on-highway motorcycle sales increased 31.4%. EUROPE SEES DOUBLE-DIGIT MOTORCYCLE SALES GROWTH Both here and abroad, new motorcycle sales are booming, with Europe experiencing Q1 year-on-year increase in the double-digits. Despite a tough year for riders and non-riders alike, the European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (ACEM) reports that things are looking up for the five largest European motorcycle markets – France (+15.1%), Germany, Italy (+47.3%), Spain, and the U.K.-- showing a 10.3% overall increase in the number of bikes sold over the same period in 2020. OEMs have so far been reporting good news, as well, with Ducati announcing a 33% rise, Polaris talking about 30% more sales, and Harley-Davidson seeing a 9% increase for the same time period. If the past three quarters give any indication, this trend should hopefully continue. AMERICAN MOTORCYCLE-MAKERS FACING MASSIVE 56% EU IMPORT TARIFF Harley-Davidson and others could face a devastating situation in Europe in less than two month’s time after being slapped with a whopping 833% increase in tariffs. The rise in duty is the latest fallout from an escalating trade war between the old sparring partners of the United States and the European Union. In June 2018, the EU placed a 25% incremental tariff (31% total) on motorcycles imported into the EU from the US. The tariff is scheduled to increase to 50% incremental (56% total) on June 1. Since June 2019, Harley has avoided most of the tariff due to Binding Origin Information (BOI) credentials, with certain Harleys
produced at their international manufacturing facilities being subject to just 6% tariffs. However, Harley has since been told by the EU that after a decision by the European Commission their BOI credentials have been revoked, with the full 56% tariffs to be implemented on all products, regardless of origin, effective in June. "This is an unprecedented situation and underscores the very real harm of an escalating trade war to our stakeholders on both sides of the Atlantic," said Jochen Zeits, CEO of Harley-Davidson. "The potential impact of this decision on our manufacturing, operations and overall ability to compete in Europe is significant. Imposing an import tariff on all Harley-Davidson motorcycles goes against all notions of free trade and, if implemented, these increased tariffs will pose a targeted competitive disadvantage for our products, against those of our European competitors." As it stands, European bikes imported into the US are subject to tariffs ranging from 1.2% to 2.4% depending on displacement. Zeitz plans to launch an appeal to reverse the recent blow handed out by the EU in an effort to remain in the European market. ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES PROTECT ENDANGERED AFRICAN WILDLIFE Solar powered electric bikes have been adapted to sneak up on poachers in Africa to help park rangers working to protect endangered wildlife. Swedish firm Cake has built the super-light 80kg Kalk AP (AntiPoaching) bike for a project that aims to help officials combat the devastating effects of poaching on the continent’s most precious species. The bike isn’t just for use in Africa, and if you buy one (@$28,375 USD), the Kalk company will supply a second ‘twin’ machine as part of a ‘buy-one-give-one’ charity initiative to be delivered to an anti-poaching unit, complete with a solar panel and power station kit that enables the twin bike to operate in the African bush independent from the electric power grid. So Bubba is talking w/ his buddies and said kinda’ sadly, “sometimes I feel old just cause all that is going on around me.” Scooter said, “ whatcha’ mean Bubba, feel old why?” And Bubba replied, “well, like being at the bar the other night, some guy ordered a shot of double fudge vodka.” Scooter says, ‘so why’d that make you feel old?” Bubba looks sad again and says, “because I remember when vodka only came in vodka flavor.” -------------------------------------------------------------A husband and wife had been giving each other the silent treatment after a morning ‘difference of opinion’ and were driving a country road when happened on an entire field of jackasses. The wife snarkily inquired “Relatives of yours’?” to which the hubby quickly replied “Yup, in-laws.” -------------------------------------------------------------Some really angry guy with Road Rage just yelled out his window to me, “I’m gonna make your life a living hell.” I yelled back just as loudly, “Thanks, but I’m not looking for a relationship right now.” -------------------------------------------------------------Bubba in KFC drive-thru for the kids. They wanted the Kids Meal with a leg so he said, “Kids Meal with the leg” and the woman asks, “which side?”, Bubba wasn’t expecting this so he slowly replies, “I reckon the right side, why? is there a big difference?” After a bit of laughter she says, “no hunny, which side would you like to go with the leg? mashed taters or wedges?”. -------------------------------------------------------------Two guys sitting at the bar and Skeeter says, “Well, yesterday my wife ran away with my best friend, Mike.” Snake is a little insulted cause’ he thought him and Skeeter was besties. “Since when is Mike your best friend?” Skeeter orders another shot and says “Since yesterday.” -------------------------------------------------------------So Sally stands up at the local “Gardening Club” and very sweetly and casually declares, “Ladies, please remember when you bury a body, cover it with endangered plants so that it’s actually illegal for them to dig it up.” Everyone in the room looked at each other and then back at Sally and every single hand went up with a question. Sally picked Karen to ask. Karen very quietly asks, “So after you put the endangered plants on the buried body, do you need to add fertilizer or will the dead body create its’ own fertilizer?” All hands went down waiting for Sally to answer the question.
Bubba was at his Doctor’s office for a routing visit when the Doc asked him, “It’s not showing in your chart but we’re a little behind on updating the charts, refresh my memory, have you ever had a stress test?” Bubba said, “Oh yes I have! HARLEY-DAVIDSON LAUNCHES ITS ALL-NEW ADVENTURE BIKE

T
he motorcycle on the cover of this issue, if you are not familiar with it, is the all-new Harley-Davidson Pan America. It is a 1250cc adventure touring bike which is a very popular segment of motorcycling. Adventure touring bikes are very capable on the street, but also capable off road. It’s a bike you could ride 1000 miles in a day on the road and the next day ride gravel or dirt roads and mild trails, and by all accounts, it’s a very good ADV motorcycle. The Pan America has been in development for many years, it uses Harley’s new liquid cooled DOHC 4 valves per cylinder, with variable valve timing, 60° V twin 1250cc Revolution Max engine. Although it’s a 60° v twin, offsets for the connecting rods allow it to have a 90° firing order. It produces 150 hp and 94 lb-ft of torque with a redline of 9500 rpm. The Pan America comes in “Standard” and “Special” versions. Both models have cruise control, 5 preprogrammed electronic ride modes with a customizable mode, and much like RDRS equipped touring bikes they have linked brakes, cornering ABS, lean-angle aware
traction control, Hill Hold Control, a Drag-Torque Slip Control clutch, LED lighting, a 4-way hand-adjustable windscreen, a 6.8” color TFT display with Bluetooth for calls and music, and navigation on the screen. The Special adds a lot of electronic goodies. It has electronically adjustable semi-active front and rear suspension, it senses the rider’s weight and adjust the suspension on the fly, it can even drop the ride height 1-2 inches when you come to a stop depending on the rear preload it selected for you. The special models come with aluminum skid plate, engine guards, hand guards, heated grips, center stand, steering damper, multi-position rear brake pedal, tire pressure monitoring, ambient air temp, two additional customizable ride modes, and a Daymaker adaptive cornering headlight. The bikes are being delivered to dealers as you read this, and we will do a ride review when we’ve had a chance to spend some time on it, but we put the motorcycle on the cover because it is a significant departure from the Motor Company’s bread and butter. We hope it’s a sign that HarleyDavidson is adapting to stay relevant and be around for another 118 years.

AT CUMBERLAND MOUNTAIN GENERAL STORE

y usual rides this time of year include a trip to Northern Georgia for pizza and a gem of a place East of Gatlinburg for smoked coffee and smoked Blackberry Cobbler. We’ll save that for another time though. I want to head West for a ride, so I aim my Indian out of Knoxville and towards Clarkrange TN, indirectly of course, and find myself at the Cumberland Mountain General Store. The store with its original 1923 fixtures, creaky well-worn stout wooden floors and welcoming façade doesn’t lend itself to its secret in the back, The Rock-A-Billy Diner. As you enter the store, the door to the diner, let’s call it a time portal, is straight ahead down the aisle of antiques, knives, fishing tackle, grain and flour sacks and just passing the huge barrel woodstove, the diner comes into view through the glass door. An authentic juke box on the far wall and a glimpse of Elvis is all I need to lure me in. Upon entering the diner all my senses come alive. The music coming from the juke box tells me its real, the ole timey soda fountain on the right is full with people eating, some enjoying one of the many fountain treats (Root Beer & Coke Floats, Elvis Mudslide Sundaes and a Malted Milkshake to name a few). Its walls are an eclectic assortment of 50’s memorabilia (78 & 45 records, tin signs, more Elvis, a guitar, Coke signs, muscle cars and more). And then there are the tables, bright red vinyl covered cushy comfy chairs placed at the green Formica topped tables most of us grew up with. All nicely wrapped up with the black and white checkered tile floor. The whirr from the malt machine snaps me out of my visual trance and I realize I’m still standing and almost forgot why I came here- to eat! Todd, the owner, cook, chief bottle washer and today waiter, greets me with a genuine down home welcome and hands me a menu. It’s really no frills- burgers, slaw dogs, chicken sandwiches, fries and onion rings and then I see it, the fried sweet hickory bologna sandwich. No eatery in TN worth its salt wouldn’t have a fried bologna sandwich. I’m all in! Todd comes back around and we talk motorcycles and he tells me about the car cruise-ins, flea markets, fish fry’s and more. Clearly there’s more than just a store here. Again, I’m reminded by my stomach that I came here to eat. Bologna and hand dipped onion rings for me. My order arrives in a retro red basket with white and red checkered
paper. What do we eat with first? Our eyes. And my eyes are telling me I made a great choice. The sweet hickory bologna with lettuce, tomato and mayo is packed high that it almost topples out, even though the perfectly grilled buns are working hard to keep it all in. The onion rings are hand made perfection. Not bad for no frills, not bad at all. Listening to the juke box as I enjoy my lunch, I know I’ll have to step back through the door, that time portal, to be on my way, but for now all is good, simple good.
