appy Birthday America! Fourth of July celebrations are arguably the best part of Summer. They involve so many of our favorite things, hot dogs, ice cream, swimming, picnics, and fireworks, so really, what’s not to love? We never seem to tire of watching the sky with “oohs” and “ahhs” of surprise and appreciation. In 1777, on the first anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, marked the day with fireworks, beginning the tradition that has grown over the last 200 years. John Adams, credited with suggesting “bells, bonfires, and illuminations,” for the event, would undoubtedly be thrilled and impressed with today’s pyrotechnic shows. And figuring out exactly where to celebrate the holiday is crucial so check out the event pages and the ads in this issue for some fun things to do 4th of July weekend. So as I type this letter, Scott and I have been deathly sick, Scott for almost 2 weeks and myself for over a week. A lot of the guys at Scott’s fire hall have it too! I’ll just call it “it” because our doctors haven’t given us a name for “it”, just that it’s going around and if left untreated can last for 3 or 4 weeks. Well we’ve been treated with steroid shots and antibiotics, along with codeine cough syrup and an inhaler to treat the symptoms and we still haven’t been able to get rid of this crap. The persistent cough and just plain old feeling run down and tired are the worse part of “it”. Putting this issue together has been a nightmare to say the least, but the show must go on. So if you’re one of the unfortunate ones and you have or have had “it”, we feel for you and hope you get better soon. I’m going to keep this letter short this month, no need to explain why :) but we hope to see you at some events this month! We will be set up at Kentucky Bike Rally July 18th – 21st and the National AMA Hillclimb Grand Championship July 26th – 28th at the Buffalo Valley Dragway and we’d love to see you, so please stop by our trailer and say hello! As always, please support to our amazing advertisers that support us by shopping at their businesses when you’re in need of a product or service they provide. HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY, be safe and enjoy your freedom! We will forever be thankful for those who came before us, and everyone who has died to give us the right to freedom. “THE POWER OF PROPER PRAYER” Wonder why there is no power in your prayers, maybe you’re not praying properly? Most Christians are afraid to ask the big question; “Why don’t my prayers work?” Especially when there are so many promises in the bible Matt.18:19 “…anything you ask; it shall be done” Matt.21:21 “…whatsoever you ask; ye shall receive.” Mark 11:24 “…whatsoever you desire, ye shall have them” John 14:13 “…whatsoever ye ask in my name, that I will do.” These are covenant promises made to those that have a covenant with God Himself. John 15:7 “If you abide (born again) in me and my Words (Jesus’s Words) abide in you, ask what you will and it shall be done.” Pray the Word of God and not religious prayers: Matt.6:5 “And when thou pray, thou shall not be as the hypocrites are: seen of men…vain repetitions…they shall be heard for their much speaking.” If we examine our prayer life, we might be shocked to find out that about 90% of our prayer time could be incorrect. God said in Isa. 55:11 “My Word will not returned unto me void.” Are you praying the Word of God or are you praying; Quotes, phrases, slogans, clichés, metaphors, repetitions, begging’s, pleadings, murmuring and complaining? God is not interested in how long you pray, it’s what you pray! Do you spend most of your time telling God what you need, Jesus said in Matt.6:8 “… your Father knows what you have need of.” Do you think God just forgot and you need to remind him of it every day? Phil.4:19 “My God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory.” Sometimes we spend too much time telling God what He already knows, doctor reports, job reports, family reports. We should have spent that time reminding Him what His Word said. God is not moved by your emotions, He is only moved by His Word, and He has promised “to supply all your needs.” Sometimes our “vain repetitions” turn into “doubt & unbelief.” After the disciples saw Jesus heal the sick, raise the dead, and cast out devils, they ask Jesus in Luke 11:1 “Lord, teach us how to July 2019

pray,” and in Matt.6:9 “After this manner therefore pray ye, Our Father,” Religion has taught Christians to fear God, but God is our Heavenly Father and not our judge. “Hollowed be thy name.” to honor God for who He is. “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven.” There is no sickness, death, poverty in heaven, it is not God’s will for you to be sick & broke on this earth. PS 100:4 “Enter His gates with thanksgiving, enter His courts with praise.” God has given us clear direction on how we should approach Him, if we approach Him in any other way, well, how’s that working for you? Remember to work the Word, and the Word will work! Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

SECOND AMENDMENT – DANGER ON OUR FLANKS

Hello, fellow bikers. Greetings from middle Tennessee. Today, as I write my monthly article for Thunder Roads Tennessee/Kentucky, I am preparing to take a Father’s Day ride with Miss Tracy. Father’s Day, is among my favorite holidays, only being surpassed by Memorial Day, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. It is a day to reflect on our fathers and grandfathers. Speaking of reflections, all of us Second Amendment loving Patriots need to reflect on the current state of political duress facing each of us. We definitely need to be involved in our political process as we are currently facing a serious threat on our flanks. Look no further than the current slate of 23(?) Democrats who have officially announced their candidacy for their party’s presidential nomination. All of these candidates will have a chance over the coming months to state their positions – and all of them have a position on the Second Amendment. Let’s look at some: Joe Biden’s (D-DE) official position on guns is that he wants universal background checks, bans on “assault rifles” and adoption of finger print activated “smart guns.” While on the stump, in May, he admitted that the “Second Amendment exists,” but it doesn’t mean, “[everyone is] entitled to own a gun.” Corey Booker (D-NJ) is proposing a national (Federal) gun licensing program which would impose minimum standards for gun ownership across the country. Prospective gun owners would have to apply for a license, and sit for an interview, in much the same way one applies for a passport. Additionally, universal background checks and assault weapon bans are part of Booker’s wish list. Pete Buttigieg (D-IN) is also promoting far reaching gun regulations including such “common sense” reforms as holding the gun industry responsible for gun violence, banning “military” assault rifles and the establishment of a nationwide gun licensing system. Kirstin Gillibrand (D-NY) is proud of her NRA “F” rating and touting it on her own campaign website, where she calls for passing universal background checks – which would inevitably require national gun registration – closing gun sale loopholes (which don’t exist) and banning assault style weapons. Kamala Harris (D-CA) is making executive action the centerpiece of her plans on gun control, where she would implement “near universal background checks,” revoking gun manufacturers’ licenses (which they don’t need today) and require anyone selling more than five guns per year to obtain a Federal Firearms License (FFL). John Hickelooper (D-CO) also promotes his NRA “F” rating, promoting a policy of guns which will include universal background checks, national gun licensing, raising the national age to age for gun purchases to 21, restricting magazine capacities, banning all assault rifles and providing Federal grants to states which pass “Red Flag” laws. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) states that he will no longer turn a blind eye to

gun violence, proposing “truly” universal background checks, for guns and ammunition, push states to enact “gun violence restraining orders” and remove all “weapons of war” (code speak for those scary black assault rifles) from our communities, “once and for all.” This created a Twitter firestorm, where Joe Biggs Tweeted, “So basically Swalwell wants a war… You’re outta your fucking mind if you think I’ll give up my rights and give the gov all the power.” Swalwell, in true gun grabber speak, quickly responded to Biggs, Tweeting, “And it would be a short war my friend. The government has nukes. Too many of them. But they’re legit.” Now, this is nothing new for leftist politicians. They have been after our guns for a very long time. But the biggest threat is that they are listening more carefully to a media which is unhinged when it comes to guns. A media which neither understands gun owners, how guns work or the current Federal requirements of background checks. This is setting up a very dangerous dichotomy which blurs what we have today to what their Utopian societal dreams truly are. They cloak most of their proposals in the grossly overused phrase, “common sense gun reform.” But please don’t be fooled by anything any one of these candidates refer to as common sense. They totally prove the adage, “common sense is not so common” today. The Grey Beard Biker realizes that the General Election of 2020 is still a long way in the future. Do not be lured into thinking their proposals are not an imminent threat. The politicians running to lead our state and Federal governments are attracting growing numbers of supporters who believe government should be larger. That the government should provide the things we have provided ourselves for generations: health care insurance, free college tuition, free abortions and student loan forgiveness. These people also want a country free of reference to God, a country where free speech is limited to that which they agree with, a country where the government sanctions killing babies – even after they’re born, a country where everyone – including the dead and illegal aliens – can vote – as long as they vote for them and most importantly a country free of guns – unless you are an ultra-rich celebrity, politician, athlete, philanthropist, or Democrat/Socialist donor. Then you can own guns for when you leave your walled compound with your armed gestapo. Do not let them take our country, brothers and sisters. Act today. Talk to your children and young people around you. The fight is here. Since I last wrote this column, your Grey Beard Biker has started a blog, which provides: Riding Stories, Destinations, Political Commentary, Military History and Gun Talk. Please take time to visit it, sign up for updates and be entertained by my commentary: http://thegreybeardbiker.com/

DODGING THE ROADKILL

WHEN IT’S TIME TO QUIT By Hank Bonecutter

W

e all started riding for a reason. It only stands to reason that we’ll all quit for a reason. Whether it from an accident, old age, or we just don’t want to keep doing it. I was involved in a discussion the other day about when it’s time to quit riding. The discussion began with someone commenting on how much more dangerous it is to ride than it used to be. That’s a no brainer. The cell phone has been a deadly game changer. The guys who were a part of this discussion were riders and former riders. The ones who had quit had different reasons for stopping. One, had just had a baby and felt it was time for him to stop the “risky business” of motorcycles. The other had been in an accident and just couldn’t get back on it anymore. If you’ve been following my journey, you know that it helped me beat depression. I knew the risks, and like many things in life, I just overcame the fear and now I ride. My family was totally split on my decision but they know how much I love it, so here we are. Fear is a captivating emotion. We all experience it, and if you can overcome it, then your life changes. It doesn’t mean you have to be stupid, or take ridiculous risks in your life, but if you can get past those fears, then you gain confidence and strength, and to be honest, there’s a risk in most everything we do. I remember the first time I turned on the microphone to begin my radio career. I was paralyzed and couldn’t speak. I was PETRIFIED! But I overcame that fear and went on to spend my career in broadcasting. I’ve had two motorcycle accidents. Nothing life threatening. The last time I laid it down, I had to have some surgery on my leg. I was out for about a month. It could have been worse, but it wasn’t. Did I think about not riding anymore? Yes. Was I apprehensive after I got back in the saddle? Yes. But I’m still riding, because I’m passionate about it. I don’t think bikers have a death wish. I think bikers have passion and have a need for the adrenaline that this lifestyle produces. When I posted this question on my Facebook page, the responses were varied, and intense. Most responses had 10

something to do with surviving an accident, and still riding. Some said “yes” they had quit riding because of an accident. There’s no question that it’s more dangerous on the road. There’s no question that drivers are more distracted than they used to be. But the way I look at it, deep down in your gut, you know when something is right or wrong for you. That voice in your head tells you when it’s time to “stop” or “go.” We all know what our threshold is. We all know what our limits are. And we all know when it’s time to quit. There’s no shame in that. One of my dearest friends and mentors rode almost his entire life, and this year, he just walked away. It was time for him to move on from motorcycles. He didn’t want it anymore. He didn’t want anything to do with it. He had just survived a terrible illness and God spoke to him and pointed him in a different direction and there was no motorcycle involved. So don’t judge those who just walk away. Don’t judge those who think you’re crazy for riding. Don’t judge the young man who has a family and doesn’t want to risk leaving his kids behind. Bikers talk a lot about respect, so we have to respect a bikers decision to park his bike and never ride again. This lifestyle is a passion and we get to express ourselves in our own unique way. I love this journey I’m on and I thank you for sharing it with me. Ride safe my friends!

T

THE RUN FOR

he Vietnam Veterans Memorial, commonly referred to as “The Wall”, is not a war memorial but rather a salute to the 2.7million military men and women who served in the war zone, including Vietnam and adjacent waters, Laos, Cambodia and other areas, in which the US forces carried out actions related to the war. The $9 million cost of The Wall was entirely raised from public donations, with no Federal money. It consists of two 246.75 ft. walls, each consisting of 70 black granite panels, plus two sculptures: The Three Servicemen and Vietnam Women’s Memorial. The West Wall points toward the Lincoln Memorial and the East Wall toward the Washington Monument. Inscribed on The Wall are 58,272 names, including approximately 1,200 POWs and MIAs, the remainder are confirmed dead. To designate the confirmed dead, their name is marked with a diamond. The MIA’s have a plus sign, which can be easily changed to a diamond, if they are, later, confirmed to have died or circled if they later return alive. The Wall continues to have names added for those confirmed to have died as a result of combat inflicted wounds. Cancer victims related to Agent Orange and post-traumatic stress suicides are excluded, primarily due to their sheer numbers. The Three Servicemen statue depicts a European American, an African American, and a Hispanic American overlooking the names of their fallen comrades. The Vietnam Women’s Memorial consists of three uniformed women caring for a wounded soldier, while one watches for a medivac chopper. (The picture shows a vet having his picture taken with the memorial.) The memorials are a sacred site to the servicemen who served in Southeast Asia, and their family and friends and it receives over 3 million visitors per year. A great way to visit the Memorial is to join The Run For The Wall demonstration. Since 1989, The Run For The Wall organization has promoted healing among all veterans and their families and friends, accounting of all POW’s and MIA’s, honoring those killed in action, and supporting our military personnel. The first Run was made by James Gregory and Bill Evans. These two Vietnam vets traveled across the heartland of the US, on motorcycles, stopping to talk to radio and TV stations, and newspapers, about the thousands of unaccounted for men and women, from all wars. Today, The Run actually has three separate routes to the Vietnam Memorial: the Central, Midway, and Southern Routes. All start in Ontario CA and pick up registered riders, along the route to Washington DC. The Midway Route chose Cookeville TN, for the 6th straight year, as the only overnight stop in Tennessee. To quote several of the riders, “We thought Amarillo had a great welcome for us, until we hit Cookeville!” On May 20th, in excess of 30,000 flag waving citizens lined the rainy Cookeville streets, for several hours (traffic in Nashville delayed the riders) to greet the group. Zach Ledbetter, Molly Brown and their Visitors Bureau cohorts pulled out all the stops in welcoming the 350-400 participants, at Cookeville’s Leslie Town Centre. An additional 34 riders registered to join The Run in Cookeville. Cookeville’s love of bikers is top’s in Tennessee and one of best in the US! Thanks

THE WALL

Cookeville for all you do for bikers and thanks Run For The Wall for all you do for Veterans! Even non-veteran, ordinary citizens, like Keith Chillquist, walked the line, thanking each participant, for his/her service. A BBQ dinner from Strouds, was provided by Boswell’s Country Roads Harley, while Sams Club provided goody bags and free day passes, opened early, and provided the staging area for the riders. Boswells received praise for quickly repairing bikes and even delivering them to the event. A famous local family provided the music. Aaron Tippen’s wife, Thea, sang the National Anthem, while Aaron, a long-time entertainer to servicemen overseas, accompanied by Thea and their son Tom, sang “You Gotta Stand For Something”, “Where Eagles Fly”, and “Kiss This”, to standing ovations. There was a tribute to the Gold Star Family of MSG James Carlos Helton represented by Jaymie Duncan (daughter), and Bonnie Gates. MSG Helton died by enemy fire on 4/17/1967, in Pleiku Province. He was assigned to the 5th Special Forces Group. Also, Bill Burkhart told the story of his father, Cpt, now Col, Charles W. Burkhart, Jr., a career Air Force pilot, who is MIA after his B57 Canberra was shot down on 6/13/66, over Laos. The wreckage has now been discovered and excavation of the site should begin in about 3 years. Hopefully, his body will be found and returned to the family. Route Coordinator for the route was Glenn “Wombat” Waggoner. The Run breaks the riders into platoons, coordinated by Randy “Password” DeCastro, to make smaller group rides, as The Run obeys all traffic regulations and the Road Guards only block intersections, when escorted by police, although 95% of the Road Guards are former police officers. The Run For The Wall is not affiliated with Rolling Thunder, which is a parade in DC, although some participants join it. Sadly, Rolling Thunder has made their last ride, but plans are already underway for the 2020 Run For The Wall. For information on The Run, go to the rftw.us website. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper

RIDER SAFETY

Y

MOTOR MAIDS’ TOP 10 FOR SAFE RIDING

ou may have noticed signs the past few months on our roadways urging motorists to “look twice and save a life”. Even though May was Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month urging all drivers to look twice for us, every month should be Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month where a motorcyclist is concerned.

dirt, crowned road, wet painted-on road markings, pot holes etc. Be aware that all these hazards may cause instability for your feet when you take them off the pegs and put them down. Tip #6: Cancel the signals Don’t leave your signal light blinking. This can cause others to pull in to your path of travel. Tip #7: Check your bike before you ride Before you sling your leg over the seat, check your tires, tire pressure, look for any leaks and make sure the lights are working. The MSF recommends doing a T-CLOCS inspection. Tires/wheels/brakes, Controls, Lights/electrics, Oil/fluids, Chassis and Stands.

Let’s take a look at tips from seasoned riders. For this article, a “seasoned” rider has been riding for 20 years (or more) and averages 15,000 miles per year. And, for full disclosure, these seasoned riders are Motor Maids. Way to go ladies! Tip #1: Be seen Most motorcyclists wear black. Black helmets and black jackets. Which makes you blend in to the scenery and is difficult for you to be seen by others. Bright reflective options should be your colors of choice. If not, consider wearing a reflective vest over your jacket. Tip# 2: Choose your riding companions carefully Ride with people who know how to ride and that you trust. Most seasoned riders prefer to ride with a select few companions or by themselves. Tip #3: Wear the right gear Always wear your protective gear. Boots and gloves that fit you well, summer gear to keep you cool and winter layers to keep you warm. And, always wear your helmet. Tip #4: Don’t trust your mirrors Your bike’s mirrors do not give you the full view. Your motorcycle has a blind spot. Always add a quick check over the appropriate shoulder in addition to checking your mirror. Tip #5: Scan the area ahead prior to stopping When coming to a stop at a red light or stop sign, check the area where you plan to put your feet down. Look for oil, gravel, sand, July 2019

Tip #8: Be weary of intersections Don’t go speeding through an intersection as soon as the light changes. Most motorcycle accidents occur at intersections or in curves/turns. Take an extra look or two when pulling out into an intersection. Tip #9: Get the right fit for confidence Do your feet touch the ground? All the parts of your feet? Can you reach and turn the handlebars comfortably? Can you lean the bike slightly to the left and right without your heart beating out of your chest? Is the seat comfortable for riding more than 5 minutes? Is the size (and horsepower) appropriate for your skill level and experience? How your bike fits you has a direct impact on how confident you are going to be riding it. Tip #10: Don’t drink and ride Drinking alcohol, taking drugs and riding your motorcycle are not a mix for survival. Separate drinking from riding. Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: OMG – The major news network polls are reporting that Donald Trump is behind Biden, and the other 27 Democrats running for President in 2020!! Run for the hills its all over now. They even have one of my local councilmen ahead of him! I guess I really shouldn’t even bother going to the voting booth 16 months from now to vote. It’s all over… buy a red beret and a tie dyed T-shirt, the country is mostly communists and socialists and red blooded Americans are outnumbered, out liberal-caused and we can’t hope to wet our pants near as fast as they do over an infraction to our sensitive inner self. We might even have to put green, red or blue dye in parts of our hair to blend in and not be recognized as normal humans. Probably need one of those hair cuts that’s half way between a boy’s haircut and a girl’s. As you know its sexist to look like a boy if you are one and to look like a girl if you are one of those. To get past harsh scrutiny of progressives you have to make people question what your real sex is. I wonder if they are going through these same transitions in Afghanistan! If they are dying their hair over there nobody would know. The men wear those hats that look like pita bread and the women have to keep their head covered. If they ever decide to join the communist progressive revolution here, they’ll have to uncover so everyone knows what side of the street they walk on. If they don’t, they may get ice cream thrown on them or something equally progressively violent. We have a national census coming up next year and the administration is trying to get one of the funny colored hair judges to allow them to ask if someone is a citizen of the United States or not. The problem with that is that the Democrats might retaliate and add a question about whether you’re a conservative or a Christian on the next census. The President is talking about removing illegal aliens and then at some point in the future the Democrats might try to put Christians and conservatives

on boats, take them out into the middle of the ocean and sink the boats. They would probably run major news stories after that “millions of liars drowned after claiming they were Christians but couldn’t walk on water like their savior!” You can only imagine how that would sound coming from Nancy Pelosi or Ocasio Cortez. It would have to be them because the major media takes everything they say as the gospel truth. I’m sure that last sentence will come back to bite me, you can’t use a religious term like gospel anymore because it offends the hair color people but you get my point. If you watch the major news channels or listen to PBS radio you might think what I’m saying is an abomination but that’s only because the major media over the last 60 to 70 years has quit reporting the news in an unbiased way and purposely slants the news to the benefit of progressives, communists and all the looney liberal groups. The training for this progressive mindset begins in elementary school and gets more pervasive as young adults’ transition through high school and especially colleges and universities. Schools of Journalism are almost impossible to complete unless you bend to the progressive strategy of slanting the news to support the undermining of the founding fathers, the United States Constitution and anything that puts America first. As you bike over the 4th of July weekend think about the sacrifice our founding fathers made to create this great nation and think about how you might declare independence from progressive group think in our major media. Truth will set you free!!! Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. Bulldog * My monthly column reflects my personal point of view and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Publishers of this magazine, but they, like me, acknowledge the sacrifices made for the privilege of Freedom of Speech, therefore, they gratefully let me rant. Thank you for reading my rants. Hope my opinions don’t offend anyone, but, we all should be grateful for the right to have free opinions.

Smoky Mountain Thunder Memorial Ride XIX

By Ron Giddis The weather on the morning of the ride was great, and after Thunder Roads Magazine of Tennessee/Kentucky had our event on the front cover of the May issue, the crowd was huge. Final count at the closing ceremony was 3127 motorcycles. Thank you to Fire and Iron Motorcycle Club for the outstanding job of parking all the bikes for easy rolling out when we started the ride.

28

The opening ceremony began with what some would call old fashion, Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of our National Anthem sung by performer and now song writer Kaleb Wright. Kaleb wrote a song and sang it for the first time at the event, called “Because Of The Brave”. His song received a huge applause. Kody Whitehead, a local performer, did a great job singing “Proud To Be An American”. “Mr. Lincoln” an American Bald Eagle from the American Eagle Foundation was back as

a very special guest along with handlers Spencer and Jenna. Guest speaker Ernie Brockman spoke about the effect P.T.S.D. has on a family. He gave information for the families dealing with the problem on how to reach out for help. Helping with the wreath placement was “Gold Star” father Gary Swanson. Gary’s son, SSG Christopher W. Swanson was killed in combat in Iraq on July 22, 2006. Carrying the wreath were Sevierville Police Dept. Officers Michael Maddron and Paul Lamon, as

local performer Mike Wyatt, played Taps. The 65 mile long ride was led by Sevier County Sheriff Dept. Officer Jessica Savarese from start to finish. As we passed from county to county, law enforcement from Sevier, Jefferson, Cocke, Hamblen and Grainger were out to keep us safe. Along the way through all of the counties, we passed or went under huge American Flags from Sevierville Fire Dept., Newport Fire Dept., White Pine Fire Dept., Morristown Fire Dept., and at the entrance of the Veteran’s Overlook was Grainger Bean Station Fire Dept. with 2 ladder trucks making an arch with

the American Flag hanging in the middle that all the bikes rolled under. Riding up the gorge to Veteran’s Overlook we were greeted by a helicopter from Knox County Sheriff Dept. Aviation and they continued to do fly overs. Thank you to Sheriff James Harville and Sheriff Department for parking the motorcycles as they came into the overlook and for their donations of iced down water for all the overheated riders on this hot day. Kaleb Wright sang “Arlington”, a song that really fits the occasion. Shanamarie Harville who is being deployed in July gave the Benediction to all of us. Knox County Sheriff Dept. Honor Guard posted colors, a wreath was placed at the Memorial followed by a 21 gun salute followed by Mike Wyatt playing Taps. NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)

THE AIM/NCOM MOTORCYCLE E-NEWS SERVICE is brought to you by Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM), and is sponsored by the Law Offices of Richard M. Lester. If you’ve been involved in any kind of accident, call us at 1-(800) ON-A-BIKE or visit www.ON-A-BIKE.com. LOUISIANA ENACTS LAW AGAINST MOTORCYCLIST PROFILING Louisiana has become the third state to pass legislation to curtail the profiling of motorcyclists by law enforcement, by unanimously approving House Bill 141 in the state legislature (38-0 in the Senate 6/2/19 and 103-0 in the House 6/3/19), and the biker anti-discrimination measure was signed into law on June 11, 2019 by democrat Governor John Bel Edwards. Effective August 1, 2019, HB 141, “Provides relative to motorcyclist profiling training for peace officers,” by establishing the creation of a “motorcyclist profiling awareness training program” to include classroom or internet instruction “in the current bias-recognition policing curriculum.” Sponsored by Rep. Frankie Howard (R) at the request of ABATE of Louisiana, with support from the Louisiana Confederation of Clubs & Independents as well as the National Council of Clubs and the Motorcycle Profiling Project, the new LA law defines “motorcyclist profiling” as “the arbitrary use of the fact that an individual rides a motorcycle or wears motorcycle related clothing or paraphernalia as a factor in deciding to stop, question, take enforcement action, arrest, or search an individual or his motorcycle or motor vehicle.” The Bayou State follows the states of Washington (2011) and Maryland (2016) in passing similar legislation, all by unanimous votes, and a bipartisan federal anti-profiling bill currently awaits further action in the U.S. House of Representatives (House Resolution 255) after passing by unanimous consent in the United States Senate (Senate Resolution 154) late last year. MISSOURI HELMET LAW A SIGNATURE AWAY FROM REPEAL The Show-Me State may soon grant adult motorcycle riders the freedom to choose whether or not to wear helmets, as legislation to repeal their mandatory motorcycle helmet law for those 18 and older who carry qualifying medical insurance is currently sitting on the desk of Governor Mike Parson (R) awaiting his signature. Parson previously supported repeal as a member of the state legislature. Senate Bill 147 passed the Senate 21-12 on Thursday, May 16 and the House voted 94-46 the following day to advance the omnibus transportation package to the governor. Missouri is currently in the minority among states, as only 19 states and the District of Columbia mandate the wearing of motorcycle helmets by all riders. Repeal efforts have been debated in the General Assembly for decades, and twice before lawmakers had passed helmet law repeal bills, in both 1999 and 2009, but couldn’t overcome gubernatorial vetoes.

36

But now, with Republicans holding hyper-majorities in both chambers and the governorship, riders’ rights groups like ABATE for Missouri and Freedom of Road Riders of Missouri took advantage of the “perfect storm” to navigate their bill through the Conservative-controlled legislative agenda. Gov. Parson has voted in favor of this issue in the past, and according to the St. Joseph Post newspaper, “nearly all stakeholders expect him to sign it.” NEBRASKA POLICE TARGET MOTORCYCLISTS In a battle between bikers and cops, Nebraska State Troopers are working with local law enforcement this summer to put the brakes on speeding motorcycles. For the second year in a row, troopers will conduct special enforcement operations to stop speeding bikers, utilizing an $18,000 grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office that will allow for aviation support as well as more law enforcement on the ground. "Motorcycles have a unique ability to evade law enforcement… (so) we'll use resources like helicopters to help out," Nebraska State Patrol Capt. Jason Scott told KMTV 3 NewsNow in Omaha, adding that numerous citations have been made so far and arrests have been made for reckless driving and for flight to avoid arrest. "We've been working with the county attorney's offices to make sure there's a message that's sent here," Capt. Scott said. "We're not going to tolerate the aggressive driving." RED LIGHT CAMERAS BANNED IN TEXAS Drivers in Texas are about to be seeing less red, as Governor Greg Abbott (R) has announced that he has signed legislation that bans red light cameras across the Lone Star State. House Bill 1361, authored by Representative Jonathan Stickland (R-Fort Worth), would prohibit the use of “photographic traffic signal enforcement systems.” Stickland told FOX7 the bill was motivated by “a lot of reason,” including privacy concerns and the right to due process. The new law included a grandfather clause for cities involved in red light camera contracts that have yet to end, except if the contract includes a provision allowing for state law to break it. Ever since becoming legal in 2007, Texas lawmakers have made attempts to turn the cameras off that were unsuccessful until now, according to the Star-Telegram. Red light cameras have come under fire elsewhere recently, with at least 7 other states trying to ban them. WASHINGTON GOVERNOR SIGNS MOTORCYCLE LIABILITY BILL Washington Governor Jay Inslee (D) has signed House Bill 1014, which is a motorcycle liability insurance bill. Previously, motorcycle operators across the state were not required to be insured under a motor vehicle liability policy, but HB 1014 sponsored by Rep. Bill Jenkin (R-Prosser) changes this by requiring all motorcycle operators to be insured under a

motor vehicle liability policy or the allowed equivalent according to the terms required by current law. “People are surprised to learn that motorcycle operators are not required to have liability insurance. My bill simply requires those operating a motorcycle to meet the insurance requirements, or equivalent for registered motor vehicles under current law,” Rep. Jenkin told KEPRTV Action News. “When someone gets property damage, or in an accident, with an uninsured motorcyclist, they are stuck filing a claim and potentially paying a higher premium. Having motorcycles insured, just like other vehicles, makes sense.” Jenkin's bill goes into effect 90-days after the adjournment of the 2019 session. EASY RIDER ENCORE July 14, 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of Easy Rider -- and to celebrate, a newly-restored 4K version will be shown again in 400 theaters nationwide for just two nights; July 14th and 17th. Directed by the late, great Dennis Hopper, the film starred Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Jack Nicholson in a role that scored him an Oscar nomination. In 1998, the film was officially added to the National Film Registry, and the American Film Institute lists it on its 100 Greatest American Movies of All Time. GRASS CLIPPINGS AND MOTORCYCLES A DEADLY MIX A number of states and localities have come to the realization that grass clippings on the roadway are a danger to motorcyclists, and some are taking steps to outlaw the roughage. In Pennsylvania, Senator Camera Bartolotta (R-Washington County) has proposed legislation to protect motorcyclists by making it illegal to throw grass clippings on the roadway during mowing season, making the violation a fineable offense much like littering. She says grass clippings not only cause the surface of the roadway to become extremely slippery, creating a hazard to motorcycle riders and other drivers, as well as presenting an environmental concern by clogging storm drains July 2019

and can make their way into streams and cause pollution. When riders complain to law enforcement, their complaints are often dismissed as the current law is not enforceable, but the senator’s proposal to add two words “grass clippings” to the law that makes throwing litter and other items on the roadway an offense would fix that. Her bill proposes fines of up to $300 for the first offense and up to a $1,000 for subsequent offenses, and would require the landowner to remove the clippings from the roadway. In Ohio, the city of Fremont says it will begin ticketing people for blowing grass clippings into the street, saying they pose a danger to motorcyclists. City officials say dumping grass clippings in the road is illegal under a city ordinance regarding “placing injurious material or obstruction in street,” and the city says its code enforcer and police department will be paying special attention to the issue throughout the warmer months. "Please make every effort to keep grass out of our streets and keep Fremont safe for our friends on two wheels!" the city says. Meanwhile, an Illinois rider is dead after a crash involving grass clippings on the road and losing control of her motorcycle. Her husband, who also lost control of his motorcycle, told the local newspaper; “I would like something to be done better than a $50 fine on grass clippings; it kills people!” He has contacted his state representative about increasing the penalty for making an unnecessarily dangerous mess in the road from trimming your lawn. While some slippery hazards like wet leaves in fall can't be avoided, not spraying grass clippings onto the road is as easy as pushing or driving your lawn mower in the opposite direction to spray back into your yard rather than out onto the roadway. QUOTABLE QUOTE: “Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted, the indifference of those who should have known better, the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most, that has made it possible for evil to triumph.” ~ Haile Selassie, regent of Ethiopia (1892-1975)

Picked up a hitch-hiker. Seemed like a nice guy. After a few miles down the road he asked me if I wasn’t afraid that he might be a serial killer? I told him that the odds of two serial killers being in the exact same car was extremely unlikely. -------------------------------------------------------------A teenager, wanting to earn some extra money for the summer after listening to her parents telling her that at her age there were no high paying jobs for being on social media practically all day long and she needed to go back to “old school” tactics, decided to hire herself out as a “handy gal”. She started in a nearby well-to-do neighborhood. She knocked on the very first door and asked the owner if he had any “handy gal” jobs for her to do. “Well, I guess we could use someone to paint the porch”, he said. “How much will you charge me?” Delighted, the girl quickly said “How about $50. bucks?” The man agreed and told her that the paint brushes and everything she needed was in a corner of the garage. The man’s wife, whom had overhead the conversation asked her husband, “Does she realize that our porch goes all the way around the house?” The man replied, “That’s a bit cynical isn’t it?”. The wife quickly agreed by saying, “You’re right, my gosh, I guess I’ve just heard too many stories from the neighborhood Moms”. Later that day the girl came to the door again to collect her money. “Wow, finished already?” the husband asked. “Yes” she replied, “and I even had enough paint to give it two coats.” Impressed the man reached into his pocket and pulled out a $50. bill, along w/ a $20. for a tip. The girl thanked him and said to please refer his friends, and turning away casually stated, “Oh, and by the way, it’s not a Porch, it’s a Lexus.” -------------------------------------------------------------Paddy & Mick are in the Pub talking about their sex life when Paddy boasts “The wife and me we get it on like rabbits almost every night”. “You lucky turd” replies Mick, “I only get it once a month, and then I call it ‘The Bruce Lee’ night”. Paddy quickly asks, “Why the hell do you call it that then?” Mick leans back in his barstool and says very seriously, “Aye, because it’s the only night I enter the dragon”!! -------------------------------------------------------------Sex Education Class: Teacher: Tell me the difference between a Callgirl, Girlfriend and Wife. Lil’ Joey yells out, “That’s easy....Prepaid, Postpaid and Unlimited. 38

Pregnancy Q&A (in case you were wondering) Q: Should I have a baby after 35? A: No, 35 children is definitely enough. Q: I’m two months pregnant now. When will my baby move? A: With any luck, right after he graduates. Q: What is the most reliable method to determine a baby’s sex? A: Childbirth. Q: My wife is five months pregnant and so moody that sometimes she’s borderline irrational. A: So, what’s your question? Q: My childbirth instructor says it’s not pain I’ll feel during labor, but pressure. Is she right? A: Yes, in the same way that a tornado might be called an air current. Q: When is the best time to get an epidural? A: Right after you find out you’re pregnant. Q: Is there any reason I have to be in the room while my wife is in labor? A: Not unless the word ‘alimony’ doesn’t give you great concern. Q: Is there anything I should avoid while recovering from childbirth? A: Yes, pregnancy. Q: Do I have to have a baby shower? A: Not if you change the baby’s diaper really fast! Q: Our baby was born last week. When will my wife begin to feel normal again? A: Remove the word ‘normal’ from your vocabulary. --------------------------------------------------------------Paddy has broken his leg and Mick comes round to check on him. “Aye, says Paddy, I’m glad you’re here. Go grab my slippers upstairs will ya’ then, my fookin’ feet are freezing”. Mick goes upstairs and passes the open door of Paddy’s twin daughters home visiting whom partied hard the night before, lying in bed barely awake. Mick quickly says, “Your Dad sent me up here to have sex with the both of you then”. The one says, “Get out with ya’, prove it”. Mick yells down, Paddy, both of them?” Paddy yells back, “Of course both of them, what’s the point of fookin’ one?!”
