Woe doggie it’s HOT! There is a heat advisory for this weekend with temps in the upper 90’s and heat index in the triple digits. It’s so HOT that the trees are whistling for the dogs! In these high-heat conditions it’s important to keep cool properly while riding. Riding in really hot weather is not bad when you’re prepared for it. Remember to hydrate, keep your skin covered, and avoid hazards. Don’t let the heat weaken you to the point where you’re not fully attentive to traffic conditions and the road. Basically, you must consider how your body will deal with the heat. Reducing the effects of convection, through covering up and wetting down, will reduce the amount of heat that your body must deal with through evaporation. Covering up in the heat will keep you cool. Hot weather usually means lots of sun exposure, so get some good sunglasses or a darkened visor to prevent headaches caused by sun glare. And don’t forget to put sunblock on the back of your neck where your riding gear leaves the skin exposed. Despite the heat, there are a lot of great events happening this month so be sure and check out the events page and our advertisers ads. We hope to see you at some of these events and remember if you see us set up at any of them, you can get a bonus check-in if you have your ride card with you. If you don’t have your ride card yet, you can pick up your FREE Tennessee Thunder Run Ride n’ Win card at any of the Registration/Ride Stop listed in this issue and on our website. Ride card holders, make sure you look to see if your ride card number is listed as a winner so you can claim your prize. PLEASE NOTE: Some stops get many check-in’s and some stops only get a couple of people that check-in each month which means you have an excellent chance of winning! Some stops didn’t have any check-in’s… prizes that could have been yours! So, don’t just go to your favorite Ride Stops, but also try some places that you haven’t been to. Get out and RIDE, check-in to as many stops as you can and HAVE FUN! I read a disturbing article recently about motorcycle deaths in Tennessee being up 25% this year and have already exceeded what they were for all of last year. The dramatic uptick in fatal motorcycle accidents is especially worrying given that the peak riding season for me is still coming up, during which there could be even more accidents. As a result of the surge in fatalities, state authorities and police are urging motorists to better share the road with motorcyclists and to refrain from distracted driving. Y’all please ride safe, ride aware and keep the rubber side down and watch out for those “Pokemon Go” gamers!

“Anointed For Trouble” 1 Sam.16:12-23 Saul is king over God’s people and Saul was not God’s choice. The people wanted a king. After Saul disobeyed God several times, God sent Samuel the Prophet to Anoint David as king. David was sent back to tend the sheep and Saul remained king for a season.Vs.14 “But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.” Saul’s servants suggested that they find “a man who is a cunning player on a harp; so that when he played, it would calm King Saul down. One of Saul’s servants said “I have seen a son of Jesse that is cunning in playing (great musician), a valiant man (in good physical shape), a man of war (a fighter), prudent in matters (good businessman), a comely person (good looking) and the Lord is with him (Anointed).” Saul only asked for one talent but he got six talents from God’s anointed person. Vs.19 “Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, send me David thy son, which is with the sheep.” We must take note that David perfected all six talents while in the fields watching over the sheep. He became so good at all of them that people everywhere knew of David’s talents. “Never despise small beginnings,” develop your talents where you are, “your gifts will make room for you.” God called David into an “Evil troubled environment” and we must realize that David was “Anointed” first! If you’re not “Anointed,” the Evil troubled environment will overtake and contaminate you. Biker Ministries serve in a “troubled environment.” If you’re not “Anointed” for “IT” then “IT” will overtake & contaminate you. Remember, God “Anoints” you for trouble, not from trouble. God has placed you in the trouble just for the trouble. Stop asking God to remove the trouble and ask God for the “Anointing” to overcome the trouble. Stop seeing trouble as your enemy. The greater the trouble, the greater the “Anointing.” Some ministries teach that the “Anointing” is for goose bumps, jerks & giggles, running, shouting & falling out, but I read where “The Anointing is for trouble.”

August 2016

1. Sampson “The Spirit of the Lord came upon him when the enemy roared.” 2. David “Killed the giant” 3. Shadrach, Meshach & Abednego “not even the smell of smoke was on them.” 4. Daniel “God shut the mouth of the lion’s” 2 Cor. 12:9 Paul said; “my strength is made perfect in weakness.” Just remember that our God is in total control, He wouldn’t allow an “Evil trouble” to come your way unless it was for your good, “iron sharpens iron.” This doesn’t include some of your own stupid decisions that you have brought upon yourself, physically, financially or emotionally Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. by Rebel Ron July 16th marked the anniversary of a dark day for Tennessee in the beautiful city of Chattanooga when a radical Muslim killer ruthlessly murdered 5 American Hero’s. Those murdered were Gunnery Sgt. Thomas Sullivan, Staff Sgt. David Wyatt, Lance Cpl. Skip “Squire” Wells, Sgt. Carson Holmquist, and Petty Officer Randall Smith.

Motorcycle Association. There were about 1,300 bikes from all over the US to ride with respect from the dealership to the Circle of Honor in the Chattanooga National Cemetery. And they were a very patriotic group as well. I saw bikes with big American flags on them from as far away as New York and some with Rebel flags too from Texas. All stood as one for the murdered heroes and against anyone determined to harm our soldiers and destroy America.

On the anniversary of this tragic day, Thunder Creek HarleyDavidson in Chattanooga hosted a Memorial Ride to honor the 5 servicemen that was organized by the Combat Veterans

I rode down early Saturday morning with my 15 year old grandson Jackson to take part in this ride and we had a great time. Met a lot of nice bikers from all around and some

American soldiers from different wars as well. They had a short but to the point memorial service in the National Cemetery with a few speakers, music, a fly over, and 21 gun salute that was well received by those braving the heat. There was a threat of rain all day but what little actually did fall was welcomed by the hot riders. I must give a shout out of thanks to the Christian Motorcycle Association for passing out lots of water to the sweating riders. If you have never seen the National cemetery in C town, it is very beautiful place. Most of the dead there were from the War Between The States but there were plenty from other wars too. We returned to Thunder Creek HarleyDavidson for food, drinks, and live entertainment proved by The Sullivan Band along with just meeting people and discussing the problems we have in America these days. We have got to put an end to people killing our soldiers and now our policemen too. It is unfortunate that we had to have a memorial ride for these 5 men but it sure was good to see that the biker community is proud to support our servicemen and women. Pay attention to what is going on in America these days and be sure to vote in the November election! I Hope we can Change America back to the way it was. Make the effort to thank veteran for their service to our country and show support to the thin blue line of policemen who stand between us and anarchy in the streets every single day. Ride safe & often, Rebel Ron

El Malpais

National Monument and Conservation Area While touring Route 66 we were surprised at the amount of volcanic activity that the U.S. had experienced. One of the most prominent was El Malpais (say el-mal-pie-EES), near Grant NM. The name is Spanish for “The Badlands”, referring to the barren volcanic fields covering much of the park. As such, it was one of the eight sites considered for the atomic bomb test site of the Manhattan Project. Although it was saved when the White Sands Proving Ground was chosen, a portion was used as a bombing range by WW II pilots. They think that all of the unexploded bombs were removed. President Regan designated it as the El Malpais National Monument in 1987. This area of 114,276 acres doesn’t attract high volumes of visitors, with only 174,000 in 2015. You are free to wander and, with a free permit, explore the lava tubes in the park. Trails through the lava flows, which originated from the McCartys Crater, are marked by stone stacks called rock cairns. There are, also, several archeological sites from the Oasisamerica cultures, Native Americans, and Spanish explorers. Some of the world’s oldest Douglas Firs can be found in the park. Adjoining the El Malpais National Monument is The El Malpais Conservation Area. While the Monument is managed by the Park Service, the Conservation Area is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Unlike the volcanic Monument, this area includes cliffs, canyons, The La Ventana Natural Arch (New Mexico’s largest sandstone arch), the Chain of Craters Back Country Byway, and the Narrows Picnic Area. It was established at the same time as the Monument and consists of 231,230 acres. Included are the West Malpais and the Cebolla Wilderness Areas. There are 756 archaeological sites, including The Cebolla Canyon Prehistoric Community, which consists of 50 structural sites dating from before 800 AD to 1300 AD. Activities include horseback riding, hunting, 10

camping, hiking, wildlife viewing, and off-roading. Sometimes the unexpected places we stumble across are the most interesting! If you are traveling in this area, a detour to El Malpais will provide a beautiful area with no big crowds and unusual sites and sights. As this is desert, be sure to carry enough water. TENNESSEE TOURISM, H.O.G. and COOKEVILLE CVB ANNOUNCE 2017 SOUTHERN BACKROADS H.O.G. RALLY Cookeville Selected as Host by Harley-Davidson Motor Company

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (July 11, 2016) – Tennessee Department of Tourist Development along with the Harley-Davidson Motor Company and Cookeville Visitors’ Bureau announced today hosting privileges for the first “Southern Backroads Harley Owners Group Rally.” Dates for the motorcycle rally are July 11-15, 2017 with organized rides routing into Tennessee from adjacent states. Cookeville is no stranger to H.O.G. member events, serving as host to three state level rallies in the past five years, a record for Tennessee. During the 2015 state rally, the hub city of the Upper Cumberland hosted nearly 2,700 attendees from 37 states and three foreign countries. Motorcycling is a popular economic driver for Tennessee with popular riding routes throughout the state’s backroads. The average Harley-Davidson rider is estimated to spend more than three-hundred dollars per day when traveling, making motorcycle tourism a market Tennessee happily embraces. “We are honored to host an event of this caliber. Not only is this a huge win for Cookeville, but for the state as we welcome H.O.G. members from around the globe to Tennessee today, one year from today and beyond,” Commissioner Kevin Triplett, Tennessee Department of Tourist Development said. “Our branding campaign for the state is The Soundtrack of America. Made in Tennessee. Part of that soundtrack is the rumble of a Harley-Davidson traveling our scenic, awardwinning backroads.” That soundtrack was heard loud and clear during the announcement as a group of Harley-Davidson’s rode up to the podium as the Commissioner was speaking. Representatives from the Harley-Davidson Motor Company and Cookeville Visitors’ Bureau stepped off their bikes to join Commissioner Triplett, apologizing and noting their tardiness was due to the irresistible “Southern backroads” of Tennessee. “We are looking forward to bringing the ‘Southern Backroads H.O.G. Rally’ to Tennessee. Cookeville was an obvious choice 12

for a rally in this region,” Todd Robinson, H.O.G. Regional Manager said. “They have an experienced local committee combined with a community that truly welcomes motorcycle riders.” “We invite H.O.G. members from everywhere to join us as we ‘Carve the Cumberland,’” Cookeville-Putnam County Chamber President/CEO George Halford said on behalf of the visitors’ bureau. “Our community loves H.O.G. and is so appreciative to be selected as host. Tourism is the purest form of economic development, and motorcycle tourism makes it even more fun. Cookeville is ready to take H.O.G. rallies in this region to a new level.” Past state H.O.G. rally events in Cookeville have featured five days of guided and self-guided ride options, street parties, riding competitions with law enforcement riders, stunt shows, vendors, food and nightly live music. Plans are already underway for an amazing menu of experiences and entertainment for the 2017 event, including plans for the return of an AMA Pro Hillclimb. IT’S REALLY THAT SIMPLE!

1. Go to any Registration Stop listed on the map with a red star or on the Stops pages. The information that you provide when you sign-up for your FREE Ride Card only goes to us and will NOT be used for any other purpose than this contest, but may be shared with the dealership you get your card from. You will not have to provide any other personal information again after this. You will be handed your FREE Ride Card right then. It has a unique number on it- take note because that is YOURS and ONLY YOURS. Once you get your card, you do not need to register again. The Ride Cards do NOT expire so hold on to it. THIS WILL BE A YEARLY CONTEST, so you’ll need it next season too! 2. Once you have your Ride Card go to any or all of the stops listed this month and show them your card! Registration Stops are also Ride Stops. That stop will write your unique Ride Card number down. Let them know if you spend over $10 there because your Ride Card number will get counted twice! 3. Check the following months issue to see if your Ride Card number is listed as a winner. You must check this each month as Thunder Roads® staff will not contact you and let you know you won. Again, the information only goes to us at Thunder Roads®. Please note: You only have 45 days to claim your prize from the 1st month it is listed in the magazine.

1. Get your Tennessee Ride Card. 2. Get the list of Stops each month from your Thunder Roads® Tennessee Magazine, our website, or Facebook page. 3. Ride out to these Stops and show them your card. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH!

We will be adding more Registration/Ride Stops and Ride Stops across the State every month, so make sure to pick-up your copy each month of Thunder Roads® Tennessee to see that month’s Ride Stops and also to see if your Ride Card is listed as a winner!

A FEW FACTS • • •

• • • •

Winners are randomly picked from each Registration/Ride Stop and Ride Stop. The more places you check-in the greater your chances are of winning a prize from that stop or one of our sponsors prizes! If you spend $10 or more at any of the Registration/Ride Stops or Ride Stops your Ride Card number gets counted twice! Please note: The reason why this contest is FREE to you, the rider, is because of our sponsors and stops. So we want to encourage everyone to support them in return. That is why we count your Ride Card number twice if you spend $10 or more. You can check-in 1 time each week at each Registration/ Ride Stop & Ride Stop. Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in. Some prize drawings are specific to only check-ins for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from checkin’s season long. ALL CHECK-INS remain in the system for end of the season prizes!

August 2016

Thunder Roads® Tennessee will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Bike Nights may have special booth for Ride Card registrations. We will list these events each month on the Event Stops page in the magazine. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives to those checking in with their previously issued Ride Card at these stops. Thunder Roads® Tennessee will also be working with charities and various nonprofit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events. The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all Stops. Some Thunder Roads® Tennessee Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads® will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your TENNESSEE RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! This is not simply a “Chinese Fire Drill” or maddash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.

JUST GET OUT AND RIDE! We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. If your business would like to be a Stop or be a Sponsor, please email us at TennesseeThunderRun@gmail.com

LET’S RIDE! As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at TennesseeThunderRun@gmail.com

Lady Rider

Donna Farrell My dad gave me my first bike when I was 4 years old. I grew up thinking it was a perfectly natural thing for girls to be riding motorcycles. Motorcycles were a part of my life. I loved riding dirt bikes when I was younger and still do today! I was encouraged to “ride on the road” by one of my best friends. She wanted to learn to ride and I received a Christmas gift from her for a Rider’s Edge class. We attended the class and a few weeks later I found my bike and my life changed. All the bliss and joy from my childhood memories of spending every spare minute on a motorcycle flooded back to me. The more miles I put on my Street Bob, the happier I was. It’s always fun to hear stories about how people meet their husbands. I met mine beside the road at a gas station in Abingdon, Virginia. Some friends had invited me on a weekend ride. And, these friends had also invited him. After that trip, our first date was riding around Watauga Lake. Many wonderful rides followed that, including when we got married. We flew to Reno with a small group of friends and rented motorcycles. Leaving Reno we visited Lassen Volcanic Park, Crater Lake in Oregon, rode down the California Coast stopping in Eureka for a marriage license and Scotia for the ceremony. We toured the giant redwood trees, the Lost Coast, rode across the Golden Gate Bridge, on to Half Moon Bay, Yosemite National Park, Lake Tahoe and back to Reno. It was fantastic! We both love to ride. Together we’ve enjoyed riding to Niagara Falls, Acadia National Park, the Outer Banks including Ocracoke Island, Zion National Park, and so many other wonderful places. My bucket list includes the Grand Canyon, Glacier National Park and riding the Florida Keys. Closer to home I love to ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Skyline Drive. I am blessed to have a job I love as a Rider Coach for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. I spend time with new students on the riding range at Appalachian Rider Education Program in Kingsport, TN and at Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson in Maryville, TN. I enjoy coaching both male and female students. But, I do love to see and be a part of women following their dreams of riding their own motorcycles. I’m also a member of a remarkable group of women riders known as the Motor Maids. And, I enjoy writing posts for my blog focusing on women riders and safety at www.lipstickandleather.net. We would love to hear YOUR story! ALL ladies are welcome and encouraged to join and contribute to our monthly Lady Rider column. Please submit your story and photos to: ThunderRoadsTn@gmail.com

Bike of the Month 1942 Harley-Davidson WLA

Congratulations to Ed Monroe on winning our monthly Bike Contest on Facebook! This past October a friend in NC who knew I wanted a 45 hit me up. After seeing a couple pics, we rented a trailer and were on the road from TN to check it out. The main bits were there but a lot of work was needed to get it in running order. Seven months of weekends has me to this point. It couldn’t have been done without friends, family, and a very very very understanding wife and teenage daughter all chipping in to make it happen. A huge thanks would go to one of my best friends and vintage bike mentor Mike Silvio at Cyclemos Speedshop who guided me the entire way and another best friend Steve Peterson who was always there as a second pair of hands. My right hand man and 9yo son was also there every step of the way and can run down HD knowledge with the best of them. Start em young right? I also worked some very personal pieces into this bike. The air cleaner was on my dad’s old shovelhead in the 80’s that I adapted to fit the Linkert. A friend gave me the brass kicker. The headlight was a hand-me-down too. If you look closely on the front fender there are a pair of wing nuts. Those along with a few pieces I used in the fuel lines were in my great-granpap’s tool box he left to me before he passed. Mixed in with that there are a few bits hidden here and there from my time in the military. I still have some odds and ends to complete but for now it’s riding the wheels off it. This bike has added to my love for riding more than I ever imagined. There’s something that happens on an old bike that just can’t be copied on a late model. Rocker clutching and tank shifting at 55mph on a 74yo bike is like nothing else. If you have a cool custom bike you would like to have featured in our magazine, enter it in our monthly contest by submitting a pic of your bike to ThunderRoadsTn@gmail.com August 2016

THE BENT WRENCH ROADHOUSE by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley In the State of Tennessee there are at least three municipalities named Fredonia but there is only one Bent Wrench Roadhouse and only one Fredonia that has it. It’s the Fredonia just south of Clarksville on highway 12. The Bent Wrench is located at 4723 Ashland City Road (Hwy 12), Fredonia, TN 37043. The phone is (931) 362-4774. Six years ago an Army Pilot named Shamus Goresuch was thinking about fulfilling his lifelong dream of opening a bar and was running down highway 12. He discovered a vacant building in Fredonia that was up for sale and got busy. He was able to negotiate a purchase and got ahold of his brother. Although in December 2010 Shamus was still in the Army, he and his brother began a seven month remodel of the building. They put in everything brand new, added concrete parking for motorcycles, worked on a healthy but unique menu that appealed to everyone and opened the doors. Unfortunately Shamus’s mother passed away shortly before they opened. She was a great woman who died poor. Over the bar you’ll see a picture frame with a picture of Shamus’s mother and five one dollar bills. The $5 was the only money his mother had when she passed. A few weeks ago the Bent Wrench celebrated their 5 year anniversary with a big party. And it was a big one. The Roadhouse has a large following of bikers, service members and locals who Shamus calls family. The Roadhouse sits on about 1.75 acres which includes a large gravel parking area, two cemented parking areas for motorcycles, a large bar with an outside covered smoking area, a horse shoe pitching area with adjoining picnic tables and beyond that another sitting area next to an outdoor sand volleyball court and stage. All of these areas are fenced in and bikes are able to come and go from highway 12 in front of the Roadhouse and a street in back. It’s a really great set up. No traffic jams, plenty of privacy and a lot of space so noise isn’t a problem for those who live in the area. There is also a hitching rail for those who come on horseback. Cowboys and cowgirls welcome! The menu is on the website at www. thebentwrenchroadhouse.com but you’ll find many offerings that y o u would expect but each one has a unique Shamus flair to it like the “World Famous Bent Wrench Cheeseburger,” the “Mother Cluckin Basket” the “Stroke Burger” and the Holy S#@t! Nachos, something for everyone. They have beer cheese dip, fried cheese curds, build your own pizzas, build your own quesadillas and the best wings you can eat that come in eight different flavors and heats. All fried foods are fried in oil free fryers. Very healthy!! Where the Roadhouse is located doesn’t 32

allow them to have a liquor license so to make up for it they have a large selection of more than 50 different beers. If you drink 50 different beers you become a member of the Frisky 50 club and get your name on a plaque with the number of days it took you to do all 50. Frisky 50 club member times range from a few days up to almost two years. You pick the beer and you pick the speed. Monday is $5 pizza and $1.50 aluminum cans, Tuesday is $2 monster tacos and $1.50 Natural Light, Wednesday is .50 cent wings and $1.50 Busch. The Bent Wrench is open every day of the week at noon and goes well into the evening every day. Closing times are on the website. Most weekends the Roadhouse serves as a poker run stop for one or more poker runs and there are the periodic fund raisers. They have raised money for flood victims, bought headstones and supported a variety of great causes. You can come listen to a band on special nights and there have been a couple of biker weddings. Shamus is from Wisconsin so naturally the Bent Wrench is a big stop for Green Bay Packer fans on Sunday’s in the fall. They get the NFL game ticket so if you want to watch a game, this is the place. What I like most about the bar area are the decorations. I recently watched a program about Irish Pubs in Ireland. These were pubs that had been in place since the 1800’s. What they had in common was a lot of interesting and unique stuff on the walls that represented their customers and special things that had taken place over the years. The Bent Wrench Roadhouse is just like an Irish pub in this way. The focus is on a friendly, warm experience and great effort to insure you have a fun time and feel welcomed back. Much of what is on the walls of the Roadhouse is donated by customers and people who fell in love with the place. Every first timer needs to ask for their free sticker pack. All first time customers get Bent Wrench stickers. If you come once, you’ll be back. The only problem I found was that once you come in for a few minutes you don’t want to leave. Let’s Ride to Eat!!! If you are out riding to eat and see me please come up and tell me your favorite places to go when you’re hungry and thirsty. “Will Ride to Eat” will be an ongoing article in Thunder Roads Magazine of Tennessee and we want to put the spotlight on the great history and variety of Tennessee’s biker friendly establishments.

CHEDDAR, BACON & EGG BURGER 1 Large Package of Ground Chuck (4 big thick burgers or 6 medium sized flatter burgers 1 Package of big, round slices of Cheddar, if you can’t find in fridge then ask at the Deli counter. 1 Package of Large Potato Buns (these are ultra soft but if you prefer Sesame or other, have it your way; you’re the Chief Cook in charge. Get your grill good and medium high heat to get a super sear and grill marks on them. Spray your hands with a quick hit of butter spray while you form your burgers. Keeps meat from sticking all over your hands. Form your patties and then take your thumb and kinda’ flatten it out and press into the middle of burger and this makes it cook evenly all over. Salt & Pepper on each side. Place on grill and DO NOT touch them or move them around. Let them work their magic. I would suggest if you’re not an experienced GrillMaster to invest in one of those digital grilling forks (around $10. at Target) and they are extremely accurate. When meat registers your desired preference, cover with a slice of the Cheddar round and close lid to let melt. Now, you should have your bacon cooked crisp and your eggs done easyover under a raised dome pot lid on a plate to keep warm. Remove your burgers from grill to a plate and cover with aluminum foil and let rest at least (5) minutes or the only juicey bite you’ll get is the first one and the rest will be dry as the desert. Now take this (5) minutes to spray or butter your buns and place on grill on lower heat side and get them as brown or as light as you want. To me, any burger tastes better with the bun toasted to any degree where you get a little crunch when you bite in. Put a little lettuce on bottom of bun to absorb, then burger w/ cheese, then tomato, then bacon & (1) egg on top and add your fave topping. I like mayo with Basil mixed in and then add a tad of ketchup. But do your thang....own that dang burger. Serve it up with the onion rings coming up next and I am literally drooling as I’m writing this page. Yum It Up!

E-Z RANCH & CAYENNE ONION RINGS

1 Bag of Extra Large Vidalia Onion Rings from your grocery’s freezer 1 Large Bottle of Canola Oil 3 Packets of Ranch Dressing Seasoning Mix 1 Leveled Teaspoonful of Cayenne Seasoning Mix Ranch Dressing Seasoning & Cayenne Seasoning together thoroughly (add more cayenne if you want more kick.)

Either get your Fry Daddy all ready and wait for green light or fill up a cast iron skillet 4 inches from the top with Canola oil and get it hot enough so when you put the end of a wooden spoon in the middle, little bubbles pop up all around it. It’s fry time. Drop your onion rings (don’t crowd the Fry Daddy or the skillet) in away from you and meanwhile get a big cookie sheet and line with wax paper or foil and put a cooling rack over top. Fry till golden brown, place on rack, salt & pepper them, then roll them in the Ranch & Cayenne mixture and place back on rack. Serve with an ice cold Yogurt dressing or anything super cold to barely dip them in.

SUPER SIMPLE CINNAMON WAFFLES 1 Package of Pillsbury’s Regular Size Cinnamon Rolls 1 Bottle of Quality Syrup Quality margarine such as “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter”. Now, take your waffle iron and spray it down with the butter spray. Place one whole cinnamon roll into each square on the bottom portion of waffle maker. Close the lid and just keep an eye on it and it’s essentially the same time as it takes to make a waffle. Just life the lid, take a fork and very gently pry them from the waffle maker and move to a platter and be sure and butter them up well and cover with foil while you make another batch. When all done, go ahead and use the glaze that comes with them too and then heat up your syrup in a ceramic or glass bowl in microwave and pour it all over them. Serve up with bacon or sausage and ooooo-la-la, come to MaMa. These are so dang easy there’s just no reason not to make them every Sunday. I know what we’re eating this Sunday.

Y’ALL EAT, PRAY, LOVE, LAUGH & COOK.

A

Bullet Points THEY ARE GOD GIVEN RIGHTS

s citizens of the United States, we have several constitutionally protected rights enumerated in amendments to our Constitution, which was adopted by the states in 1788. The first twelve amendments were introduced after the constitution was ratified, by future president, James Madison. These amendments were suggested by another future president, Thomas Jefferson, who was minister to France at the time. Of these twelve amendments, ten were ratified by the states and became the Bill of Rights. The first three amendments were written to safeguard personal liberties, the next five were written to safeguard personal justice and the last two dealt with un-enumerated rights and reserved powers (protection of the states’ rights). The first three are sacred rights of the citizens of the United States, and are widely considered God Given rights: First Amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Second Amendment: Right to Bear Arms (more on this later) Third Amendment: No soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in the time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law. These three amendments are the backbone of the liberty we, as Americans, have fought bravely to protect and were largely responsible for our original fight for freedom: The Revolutionary War. Based on Jefferson’s urging, Madison wrote these amendments to protect the fundamental rights of our ancestors – rights they did not enjoy under British rule. The Second Amendment is what this article is about. It may be the least understood and the most easily twisted (by those who want to limit your freedoms) of the first three amendments. Only 27 words in length, it may well be the most controversial of all amendments in the Bill of Rights: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” What were the true intentions of our Founding Fathers when they wrote this amendment? Was it so a strong state militia could be easily called to service in the event of an attack by enemies, either internal or foreign? Was it to allow people to keep and bring arms to bear in the event they were being threatened? While easily contorted by those who wish to threaten our 2nd Amendment rights, the answer is very simple. The amendment was written to allow all legally authorized citizens to own firearms and bear them for their protection. The first part of the amendment, referring to a well-regulated militia, is misleading. Because the United States had such a small Federal Army at the time, it necessitated the citizenry be able to quickly assemble to protect the new nation. But the most important

August 2016

consideration about all the amendments in the Bill of Rights, with the exception of the tenth, is that they all apply to individual citizens and not the Federal government or state governments. If the Founders believed it was only about the militia, it would not be placed amongst all of the individual rights. Our right to keep and bear arms is a God Given right. One should be able to protect themselves, their family and their friends. Federal courts have upheld this right in District of Columbia vs. Heller and McDonald vs. Chicago. But our sacred right is constantly under assault. Gun right groups are under constant assault by gun grabbers who want to restrict our ability to keep and bear arms – and most importantly own the types of guns we want to own. In fact, as recently as June 9, 2016, the 9th Federal Appeals Court of San Francisco ruled there was no constitutional right to carry concealed guns. Federal appeals judge, William Fletcher, writing for the 7-4 majority, stated, “We hold that the Second Amendment does not preserve or protect a right of a member of the general public to carry concealed firearms in public.” While the San Francisco Federal Appeals court is a very left leaning, the gun grabbers have a very significant victory with this ruling. It will inevitably be appealed – probably all the way to the Supreme Court – a court which currently is evenly split between liberal and conservative justices. In the event the appeal is heard by eight evenly split justices (remember we have a vacancy on the court), and there is no majority opinion, the lower court’s ruling will be upheld. Not good for those of us who carry concealed firearms. And an even worse scenario for our long-term rights to use our handgun carry permit (HCP) is the potential election of the current presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Hillary Rodham Clinton. While this is not a political column, we have to understand the ramifications of a Clinton presidency. She has vowed to issue executive orders which will restrict our gun rights – and she will inevitably appoint a Supreme Court nominee that will side with her hatred of our Second Amendment rights. This would throw the court into a liberal majority which may well threaten the gains we enjoy from District of Columbia vs. Heller and McDonald vs. Chicago. And this will prove something which may take several generations to undo. In closing, enjoy the rest of your summer. Ride often, and safely. Study both presidential candidates, and in November, vote for the person who best reflects your beliefs. But exercise your duty and vote. Many freedom loving soldiers have given their last full measure to protect these rights. Molon labe, Mike Noirot

“Squiggy” and his wife, Joletta, are having hard financial times, so they decide she’ll become a hooker. She’s not quite sure what to do, so “Squig” says, “Stand in front of that bar and pick up a guy. Tell him a hundred bucks. If you’ve got a question, I’ll be parked around the corner.” She’s not there five minutes when a guy pulls up and says, “How much? Joletta says, “A hundred dollars.” Guy says “Dang, All I’ve got is thirty.” She says, ”Hold on.” She runs back to Squiggy and says, “What can he get for thirty dollars?” Squig ponders and says, “A hand job”. She runs back and tells the guy all he gets for thirty dollars is a hand job. He says okay, so she gets in the car, he unzips his pants, and out pops an astonishing HUGE pecker. Joletta stares at it for a minute, and then says, “I’ll be right back.” She runs back around the corner and says breathlessly, “Squig,, you reckon you can lend this guy seventy bucks?”. A little boy and a little girl attended the same school and became friends. Every day they would sit together to eat their lunch. They discovered that they both brought chicken sandwiches every day! This went on all through the fourth and fifth grades, until one day he noticed that her sandwich wasn’t a chicken sandwich. He said, “Hey, how come you’re not eating chicken, don’t you like it anymore?” She said “I love it but I have to stop eating it.” “Why?” he asked. She pointed to her lap and said “Cause I’m starting to grow little feathers down there!”. “Let me see” he said. “Okay”, and she pulled up her skirt. He looked and said, “That’s right. You are! Better not eat any more chicken.”He kept eating his chicken sandwiches until one day he brought peanut butter. He said to the little girl, “I have to stop eating chicken sandwiches, I’m starting to get feathers down there too!” She asked if she could look, so he pulled down his pants for her. She raised her eyebrow at him and said “Oh my, it’s way too late for you! You’ve already got the neck and the gizzards.” The football coach noticed that his star tackle, “Boner”, had so many women hanging around that he couldn’t possibly handle all of them. So one day he asked Boner “Just what the hell is your secret, kid?” Boner replies, “Well, Coach, whenever I’m about to have sex, I always whip it out and bang it on the dresser like a hammer. That numbs it up, and I can screw ‘em till they beg me to stop!” The coach went home early one day and went to the bedroom. He heard his wife in the shower. Seeing a window of opportunity, he tore off his clothes and started bangin’ the hell out of his “wanker” on the dresser. His wife stuck her head out of the shower and yells out, “That you Boner,, baby?” Come on in sugar.......the water just feels divine. 38

This morning on Hwy. 12, I looked over to my left and there was a woman in a brand new Cadillac doing 65 mph with her face up next to her rear view mirror, putting on her eyeliner. I looked away for a couple seconds...to continue shaving; and when I looked back she was halfway over in my lane, still working on that makeup. As a man, I don’t scare easily, but she scared me so much; I dropped my electric shaver, which knocked the donut out of my other hand. In all the confusion of trying to straighten out the car using my knees against the steering wheel, it knocked my cell phone away from my ear, which fell into the coffee between my legs! splashed and burned “Big Jim and the Twins”, ruined the damn phone, soaked my trousers, and disconnected an important call. Damn women drivers! Ma was in the kitchen fiddlin’ around when she hollers out....”Pa! You need to go out and fix the outhouse!” Pa replies, “There ain’t nuthin wrong with the outhouse.” Ma yells back, “Yes there is, now git out there and fix it.” So......Pa mosies out to the outhouse, looks around and yells back, “Ma! There ain’t nuthin wrong with the outhouse! “ Ma replies, “Stick yur head in the hole!” Pa yells back, “I ain’t stickin’ my head in that hole!” Ma says, “Ya have to stick yur head in the hole to see what to fix.” So with that, Pa sticks his head in the hole, looks around and yells back, “Ma! There ain’t nuthin wrong with this outhouse!” Ma hollers back, “Now take your head out of the hole!” Pa proceeds to pull his head out of the hole, then starts yelling, “Ma! Help! My beard is stuck in the cracks in the toilet seat!” To which Ma replies, “Hurt’s, don’t it?” A Georgia preacher said to his congregation, “Someone in this congregation has spread a rumor that I had belonged to the Ku Klux Klan. It is a horrible lie and one which a Christian community cannot tolerate. I am embarrassed and do not intend to accept this. Now, I want the party who did this to stand and ask forgiveness from God and this Christian Family.” No one moved. The preacher continued, “Do you not have the nerve to face me and admit this is a falsehood? Remember, you will be forgiven, and in your heart you will feel glory. Now stand and confess your transgression.” Again all was quiet. Then slowly, a dropdead gorgeous redhead with a body that would stop traffic rose from the third pew. Her head was bowed and her voice quivered as she spoke. “Reverend, there has been a terrible misunderstanding. I never said you were a member of the Ku Klux Klan. I simply told a couple of my friends that you were an absolute Wizard under the sheets.” If you’re headed to Sturgis & in any bar, stand up & yell out........THUNDER ROADS ROCK N’ ROLL!! We do this for YOU; the audacious Bikers.

by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: The news has my head spinning over the confusion between reality, insanity and perception. Let’s write a politically correct job description for a professional policeman. How about: Required to work long hours for mediocre pay in hostile environments wearing a blue uniform with a bull’s-eye on the back and be subject to being shot when you least expect it. Must be able to take verbal and physical abuse daily while remaining calm and not retaliating and above all not use a firearm to stop someone in the act of threatening others. Prefer applicants interested in riding in cars, looking good but not in apprehending criminal offenders. Must be able to accept being described as a race assassin by individuals, groups, organizations and the media. Would you say “Wow, what a great job that is. Sign me up!!!!” No, but isn’t that what political correctness is asking of our police these days? I am a Vietnam Veteran. At one time my job description might have sounded similar: Go into combat, defend my country and carry out the nation’s foreign policy, accept the possibility of death or permanent mental and physical disability for very low wages ( $79 was my first month’s pay. Later I was given a raise to $83) and be willing to be chastised as a baby killer by a large part of society and as a nut job in movies. Amazing to me is that the American public can get hijacked and mislead by false messages put forward by small groups of people if they get publicized by the media as universal examples of universal behavior. Let’s take Baltimore. The city put police on trial for what the courts have determined was doing their job and the media and special interest groups said was criminal behavior. Guess what the result is in Baltimore? The city catered to the false message of a small group that was magnified by the media. Now the city is 2,000 police recruits short of what they need to sustain the police force. Cops aren’t willing to risk trial and accusations from a city driven by political correctness and not the truth. Crime is up and getting worse! The special interest groups

have created a lawless territory by targeting the very people who kept them safe. Where is the truth, where is the common sense, where is the leadership? Somehow we’ve made it okay for one race to say their lives matter but other lives don’t. We’ve accepted the narrative that police are race assassins looking for someone to execute. That the police are the problem and not the people who broke the law and resisted. The resisting criminals now are the victims of the evil law enforcers. For that to make sense our schools must be really messed up. How in the heck did we start thinking those who break the law are victims and those who enforce the law are the lawless. Isn’t political correctness making crime okay? Is political correctness related to political power? How about when a Secretary of State who routinely handles classified information deliberately sets up an offsite computer server so messages are not subject to system scrutiny? When I was in service and had a Top Secret clearance I was under very strict rules and constraints on what I could have, what I could do with it and how I had to handle it. If I made a mistake I would have lost my security clearance, my job and been court martialed. I guess that doesn’t apply to powerful politicians running to be President. Seems like there are two standards. One for common people like you and me and one for the rich and powerful. Wouldn’t it be nice if we had less media, adherence to the constitution, laws that mean something and apply equally to everyone, honesty and education instead of indoctrination and had truth to replace political correctness. A little more common sense would also do wonders for reality, insanity and perception in America. Maybe it would eventually become acceptable to say all lives matter and thank those who risk their lives to keep us free and safe. Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. Bulldog * My monthly column reflects my personal point of view and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Publishers of this magazine, but they, like me, acknowledge the sacrifices made for the privilege of Freedom of Speech, therefore, they gratefully let me rant. Thank you for reading my rants. Hope my opinions don’t offend anyone, but, we all should be grateful for the right to have free opinions.

Thundermax Product Review

I

By Scott

f you make any changes to the engine on your bike, from air intake to exhaust or anything in between, you need to adjust your fuel injection system and ignition timing. There are lots of products out there to tune your motorcycle. Thundermax is a standalone completely programmable replacement for the Stock ECM on fuel injected HarleyDavidson motorcycles that continuously Auto Tunes the fuel system as you ride. It’s not an add-on to the stock unit, those types of tuners usually trick the ECM by sending false signals to the computer to get the desired outcome and flash tuners marry themselves to the bike and usually limit what you can adjust. Thundermax unlocks almost every aspect of the fuel delivery and timing for tuning, based on engine temperature, RPM, and throttle position but it allows you to do so much more. Thundermax is plug and play as long as you already have an aftermarket exhaust system with bungs in the head pipes to accommodate the included 18mm Bosch 5-Wire Wide-Band Oxygen Sensors near the exhaust ports. Installation is easy and the beauty of Thundermax is you can install it and tune your bike yourself. We went to Thunderheart Performance and let them install the ECM, not because it’s hard or we needed help, we wanted to see how they are made and show you the manufacturing process. Thunderheart is a Tennessee company, and produces Thundermax from billet to finished product at their manufacturing facility in White House TN. They also have a dyno room and are constantly working to develop new base maps for different combinations. The base maps are available with their software and set the timing and get the fuel in the ballpark for each build. On to how it works in the real world. I’ve had a Thundermax on 3 different bikes, I started using them even before the Auto-Tune feature was added so I’m familiar with them but the last one I had was on a 2006 touring bike so I haven’t seen the latest generation ECM or played with the software in some time. The bike is a 2016 H-D Street Glide Special, it is completely stock except for aftermarket slipons. In stock form, the bike was already very lean to meet epa requirements and a little sluggish because of the delay programmed into the throttle by wire system. When we 42

added just the slip-ons it was having trouble idling when it got hot and popped a lot on deceleration. When installing the Thundermax, the fine folks at Thunderheart Performance also installed a set of head pipes and one of their cool new Ballistic Air Series Performance Air Cleaner Kits, then we picked a base map that matched the best, fired the bike up and that was it. Now it was time to ride. The older Thundermax I’ve had took many miles to tune in, now they have introduced a new feature called Wave Tune, what it does is tunes several fueling points at a time in blocks instead of each individual point on the map like the older generations. Immediately the bike idled and sounded better, decal pop was gone and after the first ride it was just getting better. Throttle response was much improved, the motor didn’t get as hot and it felt stronger all the way through the rpm range. After the first few short rides to let the system learn trying to hit as many different rpm and throttle positions as possible the difference August 2016

was dramatic and the wave tuning really speeds the tuning process up. The bike runs much cooler, feels stronger, sounds better and gets better mileage all at the same time. The verdict, the Thundermax just works, it’s simple to install and because it tunes itself there is no need to go to a dyno tuner to have it dialed in and if you change parts in your engine or exhaust you just choose a new map and it tunes itself all over again. It is also compatible with the software your H-D tech uses to diagnose problems should they arise. Some models even allow you to store and change between 5 base maps without even hooking up a laptop. If you’re in the market for a tuner and want to do it yourself check out Thundermax by Thunderheart Performance.

THE AIM/NCOM MOTORCYCLE E-NEWS SERVICE is brought to you by Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM), and is sponsored by the Law Offices of Richard M. Lester. If you’ve been involved in any kind of accident, call us at 1-(800) ON-A-BIKE or visit www. ON-A-BIKE.com. NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) CONGRESS TO CONSIDER ANTI-MOTORCYCLE PROFILING RESOLUTION House Resolution 831 was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on July 13, 2016 to “Promote awareness of motorcycle profiling and encourage collaboration and communication with the motorcycle community and law enforcement officials to prevent instances of profiling.” The non-binding resolution defines motorcycle profiling as “the arbitrary practice of law enforcement using the fact that a person rides a motorcycle or wears motorcycle related apparel as a factor in deciding to stop and question, take enforcement action, arrest, or search a person or vehicle with or without legal basis under the United States Constitution,” and cites complaints surrounding motorcycle profiling in all 50 states. The National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) is working with other state and national motorcycle organizations to address profiling legislatively, and with Washington enacting the first antiprofiling law in 2011, followed recently by Maryland, a national motorcycle anti-profiling measure would advance the efforts in every state. H.Res.831 specifies that the House of Representatives: (1) promotes increased public awareness on the issue of motorcycle profiling; (2) encourages collaboration and communication with the motorcycle community and law enforcement to engage in efforts to end motorcycle profiling; and (3) urges State law enforcement officials to include statements condemning motorcycle profiling in written policies and training materials. H.Res.831, introduced by Congressmen Reid Ribble (R-WI) and Tim Walberg (R-MI), has been referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary, and concerned motorcyclists are encouraged to contact their federal representatives to support the bill. MARINE CORPS PROHIBITS “GANG COLORS OR SYMBOLS” ON CAMP PENDLETON “Open and visible association with supremacist, extremist, or criminal gangs, to include outlaw motorcycle gangs, by individuals aboard Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton (Calif.) pos46

The offending post? “Removed Content: The Bikers for Christ Motorcycle Ministry is a Christian clean and sober group. REGISTERING “AUTOCYCLES” AS MOTORCYCLES IN NEW JERSEY; VETO S-1155 Despite lobbying efforts launched by ABATE of the Garden State, the New Jersey state Senate and Assembly disregarded input from motorcyclists and approved a bill that will register socalled “Autocycles” (typically a 3-wheeled vehicle with a steering wheel and cockpit) as motorcycles. As states across the country legislatively define Autocycles as a separate class of vehicle, and similar federal regulations loom, Trenton bucks the trend. “Both Houses have approved a version that will register Autocycles as Motorcycles,” writes ABATE of the Garden State in an email request for legislative action, further disseminated through the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) to NCOM Mem-

ber Groups; “The only hope is to convince the Governor that this is an inappropriate action so that he vetoes the bill.” Please address your concerns to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie at constituent.relations@nj.gov, and ask that he veto S-1155 (Regulates autocycles as motorcycles), because “Autocycles bear no resemblance to motorcycles and have more in common operationally with two-seater sports cars,” and in addition “NHTSA is currently in the process of issuing a nationwide regulation that would mandate a completely new class of vehicle called ‘Autocycle’,” so “if S-1155 is enacted it will have to be repealed to comply with the new federal regulation.” ABATE further explains; “This will cost the taxpayers of New Jersey a lot of unnecessary expenditures, and allow the misclassified Autocycles to avoid vehicle safety regulation in the interim.” MICHIGAN CITY MAKES IT EASIER TO TICKET LOUD MOTORCYCLES Royal Oak, Michigan is making it easier for police to ticket revving motorcycles, noisy cars and loud music. City Commissioners recently approved a new ordinance making it a civil infraction with a fine of up to $100 for vehicles to emit music, vibrations or noise that can be heard from 50 feet away or more. The Police Chief requested the ordinance amendment under the city’s disorderly conduct code that covers disturbing the peace and noise. Previously, such violations were a criminal misdemeanor, which have a higher burden of proof for police. The new measure adopted July 13, 2016 makes the noise violations a civil infraction with no criminal penalties and a lesser burden of proof to make violations stand up in court. With noise tickets being handled as criminal misdemeanors and requiring proof beyond a reasonable doubt, police have had a challenge stopping violators. August 2016

“It’s above a seat belt violation but below a moving violation,” said the Chief of the civil infraction penalty, adding that the new local law will help police address public noise problems from motorcycles and other vehicles with after-market upgrades and louder mufflers. Officers writing tickets for noise violations before the new change in the ordinance had to carry devices to measure decibel levels at the time the violations happened. Under the new measure, the City Attorney said it would be sufficient for officers to use the patrol vehicle cameras and outside microphones when issuing noise violations. SOUTH CAROLINA LAW RESTRICTS OPERATORS WITH BEGINNER’S PERMITS A person with a beginner’s permit in South Carolina is only allowed to operate a motorcycle solo between the hours of 6am and 6pm, and under the new traffic code changes “A permittee may not operate a motorcycle at any other time unless accompanied by a licensed motorcycle operator twenty-one years of age or older who has at least one year of driving experience.” S689, signed into law on June 7, 2106 by South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, a staunch supporter of motorcyclists’ rights and safety, further requires that the supervising driver must “be within a safe viewing distance of the permittee when the permittee is operating a motorcycle or a three-wheeled vehicle.” QUOTABLE QUOTE: “Posterity! You will never know how much it cost the present generation to preserve your freedom! I hope you will make good use of it! If you do not, I shall repent it in Heaven that I ever took half the pains to preserve it!” ~ John Adams - April 26, 1777
