“MURMURING CHRISTIANS” From the Old Testament Jews to the New Testament Christians, and even today God’s people have a habit of murmuring and complaining? The Jews were in captivity for 400 years, complaining to God about their captivity, finally God sends Moses to free them, on their first challenge they ran into the Red Sea and started to murmur and complain to Moses and God; “were there no graves in Egypt that thou has taken us away to die in the wilderness…Let us alone that we may serve the Egyptians?” When a person has been a slave (addiction) for a long period of time, they adapt to their environment and it is hard to change, freedom has a cost to it, everyone wants it but few are willing to pay the price for it. Once they got through the Red Sea problem, now their murmuring about something to eat; “Would to God we had died by the hand of the Egyptians where we at least had flesh pots and ate bread to the full.” So God rained down manna from heaven with all the nutrition needed in it to survive the wilderness trip. But soon they murmured because they had no meat, then God brought in quails for them to eat. Then they murmured because they had no water in the wilderness, so God brought water out of a rock for them and their cattle. Finally in the book of Numbers 11:10-17 “The anger of the Lord was kindled greatly; Moses also was displeased.” The mighty man of God who had heard the voice of God, had seen all the miracles in Egypt and parted the Red Sea, he also had enough of the people’s murmuring, so now he starts complaining to God; “Moses said to God, wherefore has thou afflicted thy servant?” Why me Lord? “Have I not found favor in thy sight?” I thought we were tight? “Why lay this burden on me?’ What did I do? “Have I conceived them?” I am not their daddy? Vs. 15 “And if thou deal thus with me, kill me!” I’d rather be dead! “But God said to Moses, gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel whom thou knowest to be.” And bring them to the Tabernacle (Church) that they may stand with you there; first notice that it was the Pastor’s choice and not a committee, nor deacons, or a church vote. Second, they should stand with the Pastor August 2018
and not against him in the House of God. Vs. 17 “And I will come down and talk with you there; and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them.” God didn’t say He would take of His Spirit, but the spirit which was upon Moses, meaning that Moses had enough of God in him to be imparted on seventy other people. When we get “born again,” the Bible states; “God has given every man a measure of faith.” It is up to us to develop that “measure of faith.” We develop that faith by attending the house of God, by having a personal relation with Christ. Then when needed we’ll have that strength to share with others when needed. Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

RIDER SAFETY
I
SUMMER SIZZLE
T’S SUMMERTIME! And, it’s hot. Last month I emphasized that is so important to wear your gear. Remember ATTGATT? We don’t stop riding because it is the hottest months of the year and the thermometer reads 90+ degrees with 90% humidity. Instead, we know how to protect ourselves and listen to our bodies. Summer heat adds risk to your ride. So, we have to be prepared. The biggest risk is succumbing to heat exhaustion or worse, heat stroke. Heat exhaustion is a condition that occurs when your body overheats. Symptoms to look out for include: Cool, moist skin with goose bumps when in the heat Heavy sweating Faintness Dizziness Fatigue Weak, rapid pulse Low blood pressure upon standing Muscle cramps Nausea Headache Heat stroke occurs with your body temperature reaches and exceeds 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Heat stroke requires emergency attention and can seriously damage your brain, kidneys and other internal organs. The best way to prevent heat exhaustion is through proper hydration. Stay hydrated by drinking a lot of water on hot days and stopping more often to get out of the sun. If you do have symptoms of heat exhaustion, get yourself to a cool area and drink water or a sports drink. You can also add ice (or cool packs) under the arms and around your neck. If your symptoms don’t improve within an hour, consider medical attention. Here are some more tips: Carry an extra bottle or two of water. Keeping hydrated is your best weapon against heat exhaustion. Avoid alcohol and caffeine on those hot days. Even if a beer is your favorite beverage, it’s also a diuretic. Which means the fluid will flow quicker through your system causing dehydration. Watch out for your riding buddies for symptoms of heat exhaustion as well as yourself. Have some summer riding strategies. In addition to being hydrated and taking water with you when you

ride, you can use some summer riding gear. For example, I use the “cooling vest” by H-D. Soak it in water and it provides cooling for your core. Another option is to soak your t-shirt and wear it under your mesh summer jacket, this works great too! Wrap your neck in a cooling bandana or cooling neck wrap. For summer riding, wear light colored clothing and wear a helmet with vents. Color matters with helmets too! A lighter color like white or yellow will keep your head cooler. White will reflect heat from your head. One thing I never leave home without in the summer is my circulator seat pad. This gadget is fantastic! It is a breathable seat pad that promotes air movement while reducing heat build-up where your body touches the seat. You can find lightweight gloves with venting systems and perforated leather to keep air moving around your hands. Don’t forget your eyes and carry an extra pair of sunglasses. For any exposed skin, cover with sunscreen. Keep on riding during the summer sizzle. Just be prepared to keep your cool. Remember, safe riding starts with you. Donna, along with being an avid riding enthusiast, is a MSF motorcycle safety coach for the state of Tennessee and a HarleyDavidson Riding Academy Coach. She is a member of the Motor Maids, H.O.G. and Ladies of Harley.

Bullet Points
ANOTHER PIVOTAL ELECTION CYCLE H ello fellow bikers! I hope you have had a fantastic summer riding. It is hard to believe we are halfway through July as I write this month’s column. If you are like me, you have had plenty of time to soak up some serious heat since late May. And the weather is not the only thing heating up… We now find ourselves in the midst of mid-term electioneering. And while it seems like we just witnessed Donald J. Trump being inaugurated as our president, it is time for the public to either endorse Trump’s accomplishments - by voting in additional conservative politicians – or send him a message of dissatisfaction by removing the Republican majority in either, or both, Federal legislative branches. If that were not enough, we also have the spectacle of a new associate justice being appointed to the United States Supreme Court. There truly is a lot going on right now in our government! The latter development may prove to make the mid-term elections more interesting – and way more important from a Second Amendment standpoint. With the July announcement that associate justice Anthony Kennedy is retiring, President Trump announced his appointment of Brett Kavanaugh to fill the vacant seat. Kavanaugh was originally appointed to the Washington DC Court of Appeals by George W. Bush and went through a very contentious confirmation process which took nearly three years. However, in the time since, he has proven very consistent as a strict constitutionalist. This is good for the Second Amendment and its supporters. Associate justice Kennedy was often considered a swing vote between the opposing factions (conservative vs. liberal jurists) and thankfully voted with the majority in the landmark case, District of Columbia v. Heller, which made owning and carrying handguns legal throughout the United States. But it has been this author’s opinion that any additional SCOTUS actions on Second Amendment related issues were never safe with Kennedy on the bench. Kavanaugh will inevitably rule in favor of an individual’s God given right to keep and bear arms, but his confirmation will prove much more contentious than that of associate justice Neil Gorsuch. Let’s examine some of the statements that Democratic legislators have thrown at the appointment of Kavanaugh – many of which were given in unison with Trump’s announcement: “With a subservient Republican Congress and a far-right Supreme Court, there is a risk that the worst impulses of the Trump presidency will go unchecked. The stakes for this nomination are historic.” – U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D) Illinois “I’m equipped to lead anti-Kavanaugh brigade.” – U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D) California “Tell your senators to hold the line. Tell them to refuse to hold a hearing. Tell them not to confirm anyone until after the midterm elections – when we can recommend a bipartisan nominee.” – U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D) New York
August 2018
“If you care about common-sense gun violence protection, Judge Kavanaugh is your worst nightmare.” – U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D) Connecticut “I will oppose the nomination the president will make tonight because it represents a corrupt bargain with the far right, big corporations, and Washington special interests.” U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D) Pennsylvania These are just a few snippets from liberal politicians after Trump’s announcement of Kavanaugh – and Casey’s comment was made ahead of the appointment by the president. This is incredible. But what is most concerning is that senator Gillibrand, and others, are insisting the confirmation process not start until after the upcoming mid-term elections. Obviously, their hope is that the Democrats can reach a majority in the U.S. Senate to derail Kavanaugh’s appointment. There is much risk in a delay – the biggest being a swing in the majority. This makes the Tennessee race for Senator Bob Corker’s seat all the more important. U.S. Representative Marsha Blackburn (R), now running for Corker’s senate seat, has a consistent, lengthy voting record on all things Second Amendment and has received endorsements from the NRA in the past. Looking at Blackburn’s voting record on Second Amendment bills, she has voted in favor of the National Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act, the Repeal of DC’s ban on firearms and many others. Her opponent, democrat Phil Bredesen, talks a lot about doing what’s right for Tennessee and reaching across the aisle. And while he was endorsed by the NRA when he was a candidate for governor, he has not stated support for Kavanaugh. He is, however, quoted as saying, “I am going to vote for or against a nominee based solely on whether I believe them highly qualified and ethical, not based on partisan politics.” But, his close association with gun grabber, Charles Schumer (D-NY), makes me very concerned about what appears to be his “milk toast” comment. At this point, the only way the senate will confirm Kavanaugh is if Senate Major Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) implements the “nuclear option,” clearing the way for a simple majority vote instead of the typical super majority vote – and that will still be very close. To protect this SCOTUS appointment, it is critical to vote for a senate candidate with a track record of support for the Second Amendment. It is a very real possibility that the confirmation process will not be completed before the newly elected senators are sworn in. Until next month, keep the shiny side up! TECH TIPS
PREPARE YOUR BIKE FOR SUMMER HEAT
T
he complete line of AMSOIL motorcycle products ensures your bike is ready to hit the road Bikers of all stripes are gearing up for another season of motorcycle rallies and summer road trips. Whether you’re into V-twins or metric bikes, AMSOIL synthetic motorcycle oils are dialed-in to meet the unique demands of your bike.
V-Twin Motorcycles Powerful, hot-running V-twins generate intense heat, especially in slow-moving rally or parade traffic. Air-cooled bikes rely on a steady flow of air over the cooling fins to conduct heat away. Stop-andgo driving and periods of idling on hot summer days can quickly cause the engine temperature to skyrocket. If a motorcycle oil cannot withstand hot operating temperatures, its ability to provide adequate engine protection is compromised. In addition, the intense heat and mechanical action inside a motorcycle engine can cause motorcycle oils to lose viscosity, or shear. Bikes that share a sump between the engine and transmission are especially prone to viscosity loss due to shear. AMSOIL Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil is shear stable and does not thin from mechanical activity. It does an excellent job protecting your expensive bike against wear. AMSOIL 20W-50 Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil has been updated with labels and packaging that bring it in line with the rest of the V-Twin line introduced last year. SAE 60 Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil labels and packaging will follow in May. Together they complete the AMSOIL V-twin product line in time for the start of motorcycle season. New labels will be available when current inventory is depleted. AMSOIL Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil delivers excellent performance in transmissions and primary chaincases, offering the convenience of one lubricant for all three areas of your bike. Some bikers, however, prefer lubricants formulated specifically for their transmission or chaincase. AMSOIL Synthetic V-Twin Transmission Fluid and Synthetic V-Twin Primary Fluid offer excellent performance in these situations.
Metric Motorcycles The metric motorcycle market is divided into three segments. • Metric Sport Bikes • Metric Cruisers • Metric Touring • Sport Sport bikes (crotch rockets) need wet-clutch-compatible lubricants that deliver consistent shift performance. The high speeds and rpm at which riders travel can cause oil to foam, requiring lubricants that offer superior foam control. AMSOIL Synthetic Metric Motorcycle Oil helps you push your bike to the edge. Its advanced synthetic technology maximizes engine responsiveness while delivering excellent wet-clutch compatibility for smooth shifts. By controlling foam, it helps you confidently push your engine toward the red line for maximum speed, acceleration and cornering ability.
Cruiser Like sport bikes, metric cruisers are defined by engine responsiveness, power and speed. Superior handling, easy shifting and reliability are also important traits. AMSOIL Synthetic Metric Motorcycle Oil delivers smooth, confident shifts and excellent wear protection. By resisting extreme heat and helping cool hot engines, it promotes peace of mind and confidence.
Touring Metric touring bikes typically accentuate comfort, luxury and the adventure associated with long, cross-country trips. AMSOIL Synthetic Metric Motorcycle Oil enhances reliability by delivering superior engine protection. Its outstanding performance provides the security of knowing your bike is going to provide trouble-free operation mile after mile. It extends drain intervals up to twice the bike manufacturer’s recommendations, allowing you to enjoy peace of mind when far away from home and unable to stop for an oil change. AMSOIL Synthetic Metric Motorcycle Oil’s wet-clutch compatibility enables smooth shifts for a comfortable ride.

THE GATHERING By: Scott High Photos: Delta York
T
he Gathering, is a regional rally for the Indian Motorcycle Riders Group held in Helen Georgia. The Indian Motorcycle Riders Group (IMRG) is a young organization, it’s a riding/ social group for Indian riders like HOG is for Harley owners and you can join IMRG no matter what you ride. The Gathering was originally planned as a ride/social event for the Middle TN IMRG Chapter, but it quickly grew to the point that Indian designated it a regional rally, the first in the area. Ken Brown, President of the Mid TN Chapter of IMRG invited us to ride down to Helen over Father’s Day Weekend with the group leaving from Murfreesboro. Denise and I are always up for a ride and we haven’t been to Helen in 7 or 8 years so we jumped at the chance. The Gathering is a free event

and even though it is an IMRG event, all bikes are welcome. We met the Middle Tennessee group Thursday morning at Cracker Barrel in Murfreesboro, ate a big breakfast then headed to the parking lot for the pre ride briefing. We divided into groups and headed for Helen, meeting and picking up a couple of other groups at stops along the way, and by the time we got near Helen there were about 30 bikes in our group. By the end of the day Thursday, with people coming in from other places, there were over 70 people and more than 50 bikes ready for a weekend full of riding and fun. Friday we divided into fast and not as fast groups to ride the Gauntlet, it’s a 133 mile loop ride through the North Georgia Mountains. For us, starting in Helen, the halfway point was a buffet style lunch at the Copperhead Lodge, the meal was great and then we rode back to Helen on the twistiest part of the Gauntlet. We were with the fast group, the roads were twisty and the riding was fast and

fun as advertised. The Helendorf River Inn, the host hotel, has a huge patio on the Chattahoochee River and every night after riding and dinner most of the group gathered there for socializing. Saturday the group took the scenic route to Tallulah Falls in the Tallulah Gorge State Park. After checking out the falls and having some ice cream on a hot day, we rode back to Helen the quick way because a lot of the group was looking forward to spending the afternoon tubing down the Chattahoochee River. Because there had been so much rain in the area, the “2 hour” float we signed up for took less than an hour. The river through town was full and flowing fast. Saturday evening everyone met for dinner where there was an auction to raise money for the group’s charity, Fallen Hero’s Family Camp, with lots of cool items on offer and awards were presented before the ceremonial end of the rally. Even though the rally had officially ended, it wasn’t really over, we enjoyed one more night on the patio, then a group ride home on Sunday. The planning and organizing was great, lots of fun riding in a beautiful area, and enough free time to hang out with old friends, get to know new friends, and explore the town of Helen. We had a lot of fun and made some great new friends, brothers and sisters, and riding partners. They plan to make this a yearly event so if you want to do some fun riding with some great people make plans for next year!

O
n June 28th-July 1st Fontanel (Barbara Mandrell’s former home) played host to the 2nd Annual Music City Motorcycle Rally. It was a weekend of music, a bike show, Wall of Death, a concert, lots of vendors, and Hooligan Flat Track races. Indian and Slingshot motorcycle demo rides were available on site. The rally itself was free, but the headline concert and the flat track races were available for extra charges. Unfortunately, attendance, though up from last year, was not at the level you would anticipate for a rally of this magnitude, as some were confusing this rally with the failed Nashville Motorcycle Rally that caused such problems last year. This rally is in no way associated with that rally. The rally began with a Kickoff Party at Boswell’s Harley-Davidson with music, food and drink, and a thrill show by the Ives Brothers on Thursday. At Fontanel, the Ives Brothers would later perform on the Wall of Death and even participate in the flat track races. As would be expected in Nashville, live bands played almost continuously during the rally. Besides the headliner concert, Jasmine Cain, Vinyl Radio, Taylor Martin, Sister Antics, Kris Bell, Big Engine, Dust and Daisies, and New North Music provided entertainment during the event. These bands really rocked the
August 2018
rally. The headliners on Friday night were Foghat, Molly Hatchet, and the Guess Who. Unfortunately, we were instructed that neither the rally nor the media were allowed, by Live Nation (the promoters of the concert), to photograph the concert. There were also a few issues with security, where patrons with billfold and boot chains were not allowed in. As this was only the second year for the rally, I’m sure these bugs will be worked out for next year, as this is a rally worthy of attending. The Hooligan races, sponsored by Russ Brown Insurance, were wild and wooly! The dust flew as did the motorcycles, several straight into the dirt. One such get together took out 5 or 6 bikes at one time. The winners were: Vintage Class-Pat Bedford, Mini Class-Pat Bedford, Holligans-Chris Boone. The races alone were reason enough to attend the rally. The rally was capped by a charity ride, benefiting Community Organized Renewal Efforts, to the Redneck Riviera bar in downtown Nashville. If you missed it this year, watch Thunder Roads Magazine of Tennessee, for next year’s dates. Ride safe and Have Fun!! Cooper

DODGING THE ROADKILL
TAKING THE HEAT
By: Hank Bonecutter
T
here’s no question that if you live in my part of the country, you realize we experience a special kind of summer. While other parts of the country say “it’s a different kind of heat,” or, “it doesn’t feel that hot here,” in my neck of the woods, it can be BRUTAL! People who visit Tennessee this time of the year, always comment that “if it weren’t for the humidity, it wouldn’t be that bad.” Make no mistake, it can get HOT here, and when you’re sitting on a motorcycle, with the heat rising from the engine, then it’s a special kind of hot. But I LOVE it! Because I’m riding and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else! Now, if I had my “druthers” I would rather ride in cooler weather, but it is what it is. I took two trips to the Gulf Coast in June. Both times, the heat just brutalized me. Sitting at a traffic light is the worst, no, sitting in stalled traffic is the worst. But at the end of the day, I’m riding my beautiful black thoroughbred and there’s nothing like it! People look over at me and I’m sure they’re saying, “I bet that guy is roasting!” or, “What an idiot” but I don’t care. I’m not doing this for them. To be honest with you, when you throttle up and the wind starts churning through your sweat soaked shirt, or you pull your jeans up past your ankles and the wind blows up your August 2018
leg, it’s a wonderful thing. (It’s the little things you know). The bottom line for me is that I never EVER thought I would push myself to this lifestyle at this stage of my life. I’ve said it many times before. So the adrenaline rush, the danger, the excitement and all the emotions that come with being a biker, is what I live for. I can always take a shower, wash my sweaty clothes, or maybe just go jump in the pool afterwards. I see too many people who’ve reached this stage of their life just sitting around with nothing to do. They don’t want to, or they can’t. I respect that, but that’s just not me. I don’t know what the future holds, but while I’m willing and able, I’m going to ride. I discovered this lifestyle at a time in my life when I needed it most, so I’m DAMN sure not going to complain about it (doesn’t do any good anyway). So I don’t complain so much about the heat, I just ride it out until cooler days arrive. All of these things help us all appreciate the good things in our life. The people I’ve met along the way are a blessing and I wouldn’t have met them if it hadn’t been for this bike. So, take precautions while riding in this heat. Respect the elements. Hydrate, take breaks, and just be smart with this heat. If I could live forever, I would ride forever! Thanks for following my journey.

JUST THE RIGHT HEAT ......... SHREDDED CHILE PORK
1 Pork Shoulder or Butt; 6-7 lbs. boneless. Turn slow cooker on to Low. Add in: 1 - 28oz. Can of Las Palmas Red Chile Sauce-Medium Strength.*In the Hispanic aisle of your grocery store & 1 Cup of apple juice. *I always use apple juice when making regular pulled pork also. Diff strokes diff folks. I know a guy that cooks in straight bourbon. Oh my! Mix up a Rub: Take your meat from fridge so it can warm up to room temp while you mix rub. Splash some apple juice on pork and then rub meat thoroughly all over both sides of and let rub just sit for apprx. 20 minutes. 2 Heaping Tbls. Chili Powder 1 Tbl. Ground Cumin 2 Tbls. Onion Powder 1 Tbls. Garlic Powder Salt & Pepper to taste 2 Tbls. regular Paprika 1 Tbls. Smoked Paprika 2 Tbls. Dry Mustard 2 Tbls. Celery Seed
Braise your meat in medium-high skillet of 1 Tbls. of olive oil and 1 Tbls. of butter. Get a good braise on both sides and transfer to slow cooker. Put a couple splashes of apple juice in skillet and grab up all that drippings flavor. Pour over meat. Let cook down for 6-7 hours; depending on how your slow cooker heats. Meat will be very soft so get 2 wide spatulas up under it and move to a wide bowl to take two forks and just “Pull” in opposite directions. Add 1/4 Cup of Masa Harina (Mexican flour; again in Hispanic aisle). I have used Pillsbury Wondra shake flour for gravy in a pinch. Also add 1 more Tbls. of Chili Powder (2 if you like very hot) Stir in flour thoroughly to thicken sauce. After shredding pork add back to sauce and cook for another hour so absorbed into meat. You can serve these in tortillas with toppings or on a bun with coleslaw on top. Either way you’ll be making this version with a “kick” many times over.

CHEESECAKE REFRESHER
1 8 oz. Tub of Philly Whipped Cream Cheese 1 Pkg. Instant Cheesecake Pudding 1 Cup International Delight French Vanilla Creamer 1 lb. Fresh Strawberries; sliced into bite-size pcs. 1 Cup of White Grapes; sliced in halves 1 Medium Container of fresh Blueberries 4 Large Bananas, sliced Juice of one fresh Lime Mix up cream cheese and pudding mix. It will bind up for a bit but keep on mixing and it will loosen up. Mix until totally smooth. With mixer on low slowly add the Cup of Creamer a little at a time Do not dump in all at once. Add it slowly and let mix adjust. Mix until silky smooth. Mix all your fresh fruit in a separate bowl and slowly add into your mix a little at a time and gently fold together to mix with a wooden or rubber spatula. Gently. Refrigerate until cold all the way through. This is a great dessert but also goes fabulous alongside of hot meats as a side dish salad. Soooo creamy! & not overly sweet.
PARADISE COCKTAIL

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)
HAWAII APPROVES SHOULDER SURFING Some places allow lane splitting, riding between lanes of slow moving traffic, and others allow lane filtering where riders can filter through traffic at stop lights and proceed ahead of other vehicles when it turns green, but as an alternative Hawaii will now allow motorcycles to ride on the shoulder of the roadway. Authorities have been debating allowing riders to practice lane filtering, as opposed to lane splitting, but after much deliberation Hawaiian riders will get neither, and instead will be the first state to get shoulder surfing: House Bill 2589 will allow two-wheel motorcycles to travel on the shoulder in designated areas of state roads, when there is congestion. In Hawaii, the lanes are narrow, which makes lane splitting and filtering a greater concern. The motion was approved, however, Governor David Ige (D) was initially against the idea, stating that the shoulder lane was reserved for stopped vehicles and emergency services. He considered that allowing motorcyclists to surf the shoulder would equate to higher risks of accidents. Despite the Governor’s initial intention to veto the motion, on July 12th, 2018, it was passed by default, without the Governor’s signature. In Hawaii, any bill left unsigned and unvetoed automatically becomes a law. Effective January 1, 2019 riders will be allowed on the shoulder on roads of at least two lanes in each direction and with a shoulder lane wide enough for a vehicle to circulate safely. This experiment will also serve as an indication of whether this kind of measure concretely helps the flow of traffic or not. LANE SPLITTING MAY BE ALLOWABLE IN MORE PLACES Although practiced by motorcyclists around the globe, lane splitting is legal in only one American state; California, though theoretically the practice could be permissible in 12 other states and Washington, D.C., reports RideApart.com; “California is the only state where lane splitting has any sort of official legal status, but that has only been the case since 1 January 2017. Before then, the commonly practiced riding technique was something of a gray area -- not specifically legal, but equally not specifically illegal. According to attorney Michael Padway, lane splitting exists in the same legal gray space in the following states: Arkansas, Delaware, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, and West Virginia.” So, perhaps the only reason people think it’s against the rules in the states mentioned is precedent, but since lane splitting is not necessarily protected it would be up to an officer’s discretion to determine whether the practice is safe. MICHIGAN MODIFIES HANDLEBAR HEIGHT LAW Michigan recently became the latest state to modify or repeal their antiquated handlebar height law, which many states enacted decades ago to give police a reason to pull over bikers. Currently, Michigan law prohibits anything with a handlebar 30
height over 15 inches (measured from the lowest point on the saddle to the highest point on the handlebars), but Senate Bill 568, signed into law by Governor Rick Snyder (R) increases the maximum allowable height of handlebars on motorcycles and mopeds from 15 inches to 30 inches. “Motorcycles have changed drastically over the years and customization is very popular among riders,” said Senator Rick Jones (R-Grand Ledge) who sponsored the legislation. “One area where they are often doing so is with the height of the handlebars to offer a more enjoyable ride…by allowing for additional rider customization that does not expose a safety hazard.” Additionally, many motorcycles on the road today may not even be compliant with current state law. In recent years, states like Wisconsin and Ohio have eased their restrictions; “I look forward to the governor putting Michigan on par with some of our neighbors concerning handlebar restrictions,” commented Sen. Jones, adding that some states have no height restriction at all. Jones said the bill was brought to him by the group American Bikers Aiming Toward Education (ABATE) after a member of the riding community proposed the idea. INTERIOR DEPARTMENT PROMOTES POWERSPORTS A new U.S. Department of the Interior summer video posted on YouTube and other social media sites features exciting scenes of off-road motorcycling on public lands, and the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) is calling on all riders to applaud the efforts of the department and the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (ORR). The Interior Dept. video, “Recreation’s New Look,” is the latest result of combined Interior and industry efforts to give outdoor recreation a new look for the 21st century, and one that clearly includes powersports. “Along with Interior and the ORR, the Motorcycle Industry Council, Specialty Vehicle Institute of America (SVIA) and the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association (ROHVA) have worked hard to make powersports an even more recognized outdoor activity on public lands and this new video really showcases that effort,” said Tim Buche, MIC president and CEO. The ORR works to promote policy and legislative reforms needed to enhance the outdoor recreation economy, which accounts for $673 billion in annual economic output. Since early 2017, the MIC, SVIA, ROHVA and other outdoor industries have been meeting with Secretary Ryan Zinke and officials from Interior and the U.S. Forest Service to discuss ways to improve visitor experiences on America’s public lands and waters, including providing more and better access to trails. H-D SHIFTS OVERSEAS CITING TARIFFS, TRUMP LURES OTHER BIKE-MAKERS TO U.S. A few weeks ago, Harley-Davidson announced that it was moving some production offshore claiming it was due to President Trump’s trade war tariffs, stating in prepared remarks; “Increasing international production to alleviate the EU tariff burden is not the company’s preference, but represents the only sustainable option to make its motorcycles accessible to customers in the EU and

NEWS BYTES maintain a viable business in Europe. Europe is a critical market for Harley-Davidson.” To briefly recap: Trump enacted tariffs on imported steel and aluminum earlier this year, prompting the European Union to place tariffs on a broad range of American imports, including motorcycles. That, in turn, prompted Harley, already facing headwinds, to move some of its jobs overseas, announcing plans to open a motorcycle assembly plant in Thailand this year. In response, according to a report by Business Insider, the President is now looking to foster foreign manufacturers in the US, tweeting; “Now that Harley-Davidson is moving part of its operation out of the U.S., my Administration is working with other Motor Cycle companies who want to move into the U.S. Harley customers are not happy with their move - sales are down 7% in 2017. The U.S. is where the Action is!” SCOTUS SIDES WITH MOTORCYCLE THIEF It’s not often that a motorcycle-related legal case ends up in the U.S. Supreme Court, but as the result of a dispute over a stolen bike in Virginia, the case of Collins v. Virginia, 16-1027 focused on the Fourth Amendment, and whether or not police violated the defendant’s Constitutional right against unreasonable searches and seizures during a 2014 investigation. Now, several years after the initial incident, the highest court in the land has concluded that the defendant’s fourth amendment rights were indeed violated when a Albemarle County, Virginia, police officer strolled onto the defendant’s (or rather his girlfriend’s) property, lifting a cover to reveal a stolen motorcycle. In this particular case, the Supreme Court Justices voted 8-1 in favor of Collins, with Justice Sonia Sotomayor asserting the search was an “invasion of the sanctity” of Collins’ curtilage (basically the land/area surrounding one’s house). Regarding the “automobile exception” which allows certain types of searches to be conducted on vehicles without a warrant since, unlike a house, cars can be moved at a moment’s notice, Sotomayor contended it “does not justify an intrusion on a person’s separate and substantial Fourth Amendment interest in his home and curtilage”. So in the end, Collins’ “receiving stolen property” conviction previously handed down by the Virginia Supreme Court was August 2018
overturned, though the U.S. Supreme Court has yet to close the book on the potential for Collin’s convictions to be upheld on different grounds. Of particular importance to the motorcycling community, irrespective of guilt or innocence, ownership of a motorcycle does not invite an unwarranted search. WORLD’S FIRST MOTORCYCLE-THEMED / AMUSEMENT PARK BREAKS GROUND What could be more exciting than a theme park dedicated to motorcycle-riding, including a high-speed head-to-head roller coaster race? To be identified as “Ducati World”, Ducati laid the first stone to the world’s first theme park dedicated to all the motorcyclists, young or old, that will include a showroom, children’s attractions, virtual reality and many more indulging experiences fully showcasing the Ducati brand in a larger than life format. Located at Mirabilandia, the “Ducati World” will be the world’s first entertainment arena themed after a motorcycle brand. It will become a part of the Mirabilandia leisure park which is in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, the birthplace of Ducati. It will be spread across 35,000 square-meters and feature a unique new-gen roller coaster that will “turn each visitor into a Ducati rider” as a major attraction. It will also be home to motorcycle simulators allowing visitors to have the feel of the road on superbikes and track machines going at full throttle. The highlight of the amusement park would be a racinginspired interactive roller coaster, which simulates a ride on a Panigale V4 with the power to control the acceleration and braking; “An authentic head-to-head between bikes roaring along parallel rails.” A museum will showcase the rich history of the iconic brand, and of course you’ll have fine multi-cuisine Ducati and Ducati Scrambler-themed restaurants and Michelin-starred kitchens cooking delicious meals. The Ducati shop will give the visitors the opportunity to buy all sorts of official Ducati and Ducati Scrambler apparel and merchandise. Gates to the “most engaging and innovative experience for motorcycling fans” will open to the public in 2019.

Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: s my first year in Vietnam passed 50 years ago I got pretty sharp at air traffic control. I could keep track of aircraft coming from all directions and flow them into and out of the basecamp. Blackhorse Basecamp would slow down as the Armored Cav Troops went out on operations but we had lots of helicopters coming in and out doing new guy training and refueling most of the time. Many of the Cav ops were around three corps or close to the Cambodian border. It seemed the Cav was always in a hot situation someplace. Of course, at Blackhorse we’d get wind of some of the things they were doing and reports of casualties but most of it was far removed from my daily work. When I wasn’t in the box controlling aircraft I was reading books, listening to music on the Armed Forces Network and trying to figure out how to buy a bottle of whiskey. At 18 I could buy beer but we had ration cards and we could only buy a case or two per month. Whiskey was off limits to those of us who were under 21. It was okay for America’s youth to go to war for our country and put our lives on the line but we couldn’t drink hard alcohol under 21. Like all good Americans we were very creative and figured out how to get around the ration system. I had a taste for Canadian Club and 7up but we all had to keep it under control. You didn’t want to be out of it at night and not be able to get to the bunker if the rockets started coming in. Marijuana was around and you could buy a pack of marijuana cigarettes in a pack just like unfiltered tobacco cigarettes but I wasn’t interested in smoking anything. I had quit cigarettes just before shipping over. I figured staying healthy was a better way to get through it. I sent off to the York Barbell Company and ordered a weight set with a bench and had it shipped to Vietnam. Blackhorse was just a long truck run to Saigon and I got permission to join the convoy, go to the shipping docks and pick up my stuff. I also ordered protein powder that I could mix with milk we got in cartons from the mess tent. I learned about vitamins and got on a regular workout program. My plan was to get out of service, use the GI bill to go to college and try out for the football team. I actually got interested in weight lifting when I was about 12 so this was a great activity and an extension of life at home. There weren’t any cell phones

or computers in those days so all communication with family and friends was by letter. We had two C-7 cargo plane flights (Tong 424 and 423) that came in daily to bring in milk, mail, new guys and take out guys who were going home. We always watched the unloading to see if they unloaded mail. It was a chance to hear from a girlfriend or family. I got two “Dear John” letters during my first year. The girls back home were heading off to college, meeting long haired hippie boys and being brainwashed by the anti-war movement that soldiers in Vietnam were all blood thirsty demon killers. The closest I got to killing anyone was calling in a C-47 Spooky gunship during a ground attack by the VC one night. I got it to Blackhorse and then the Cav Ops took over. Red lines of tracers flew out of the miniguns in the windows of that plane and devastated anything and anyone trying to get across the perimeter berm. We had a barber shop next to the small PX on base. The morning after the ground attack they found half the Vietnamese barbers dead in the wire outside the berm. The barbers used to delight in trimming you around the ears with a straight razor or giving you a shave. Made my toes curl thinking about the times they had run their razor over my throat. We had a shower house with cold water where scorpions and snakes hung out. Swarms of bees would blow through. You had to be on guard all the time for some creature in addition to incoming rounds. One time a dump ass found a grenade and tossed it on the admin desk. The pin was almost out. On one occasion the guards on the berm shot a tiger. Decades later we learned agent orange was used to kill weeds on base and it soaked into the water table. When the engineers pumped our water for us we were drinking agent orange in our water, showering in it and the food was cooked in it in the mess tent. It was many years before the government started to give disability to Vietnam Vets who were suffering the cancers and afflictions of agent orange. That’s historical. It’s all about money. When enough GI’s die off that the disability cost comes down then they admit there was a problem and slow walk the problems they add to the list that qualify for disability payments. They tell you they’ll take care of you if you suffer from service but it’s not quite that simple. More next month! Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. Bulldog * My monthly column reflects my personal point of view and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Publishers of this magazine, but they, like me, acknowledge the sacrifices made for the privilege of Freedom of Speech, therefore, they gratefully let me rant. (Little Johnny may just be quicker than all of us) Teacher: Johnny, go to the map and find North America. Johnny goes to map: Here it is. Teacher: Correct. Now, class, tell me who it is that discovered America? Johnny: It’s me. I did it just now. Teacher: Johnny, how old is your Father? Johnny: He’s 10 years old. Teacher: What? How exactly is that possible? Johnny: Well, he only became a Father when I was born. Teacher: Johnny, how do you spell ‘crocodile’? Johnny: k-r-o-k-o-d-i-a-l Teacher: No, that’s incorrect. Johnny: Maybe so, but you asked me how I spell it. Teacher: Johnny, what is the chemical formula for water? Johnny: h-i-j-k-l-m-n-o Teacher: What are you talking about? Johnny: Yesterday you said it was ‘H to O’. Teacher: Johnny, your assignment on ‘My Dog’ is exactly the same as your brother’s. Did you copy his? Johnny: No ma’am, it’s exactly the same dog. -------------------------------------------------------------A senior man walks into his local Pharmacy and finds the aisle he’s looking for but not the product as the labels are too small of writing for him to read. He sees a perky young blonde stocking the shelves and asks her, “Excuse me Miss, could you help me find the ball-type of deodorant”? The blonde looks and him with her eyes really big eyes and says, “I do all the stocking here sir, and we don’t have deodorant for your balls, just your under arms”. -------------------------------------------------------------One nice thing about narcissists; they don’t talk about other people. Whose cruel idea was it for the word ‘lisp’ to have an ‘S’ in it? Why is it called Tourist Season if we can’t shoot at them? Why do they lock gas station bathrooms? Are they worried someone will actually clean them? Why is there an expiration date on sour cream? Why are hemorrhoids not called assteroids? 34
Our teacher asked what my favorite animal was, and being a farm kid and a young hunter with my Dad I said, “Fried chicken”. She said I wasn’t funny, but everyone in the class laughed. She sent me to the Principal’s office. I told him what happened and he laughed too but told me not to do it again. I got home and told my Dad what happened and he said my teacher was probably a member of PETA. He said they really like animals. I thought to myself that I really like animals too; especially chicken, pork and beef. The next day in class the teacher asked me what my favorite live animal was. I told her chicken. She asked why. I told her because you could make them into fried chicken. She sent me back to the Principal’s office. I told him what happened and he laughed and told me not to do it again. I really don’t understand, my parents taught me to be honest but my teacher doesn’t like it when I am. Today in class she asked me what famous person I admired most. I told her Colonel Sanders. Guess where I am now? --------------------------------------------------------------A pirate walked into a bar, and the bartender said... “Hey, I haven’t seen you in a while. What happened? You look terrible.” “What do you mean?” said the pirate, “I feel fine.” “What about the wooden leg? You didn’t have that before.” “Well,” said the pirate, “We were in a battle, and I got hit with a cannon ball, but I’m fine now.” The bartender replied, “Well, OK, but what about that hook? What happened to your hand?” The pirate explained, “We were in another battle. I boarded a ship and got into a sword fight. My hand was cut off. I got fitted with a hook but I’m fine, really.” “What about that eye patch?” “Oh,” said the pirate, “One day we were at sea, and a flock of birds flew over. I looked up, and one of them shit in my eye.” “You’re kidding,” said the bartender. “Can you lose an eye just from bird shit?” “It was my first day with the hook.” --------------------------------------------------------------Little Johnny finds himself at the Principal’s office and the Principal ushers him in and lets out a long sigh and asks ‘why are you here yet again?’ Little Johnny explains in a very innocent voice. ‘Well, the teacher was going over our numbers for the 8th time this week and she asked, ‘what comes after 69?’ ‘Apparently “mouthwash” was the wrong answer cause’ here I am with you, yet again.’
