ow many days till fall? If it gets any hotter, I’ll have to take off stuff I really ought to keep on, LOL! Visions of pumpkin spice lattes and chunky sweaters are already dancing in my head despite the August heat. No matter how much I try to stay in the moment and enjoy the last leg of summer, I just can’t wait for fall to arrive. Despite the heat, I am excited about going to see the new grandbaby this month! On June 24th our daughter and son in-law welcomed their second child into the world, a baby girl this time and I can’t wait to meet her! They live in Canada so we don’t get to see them as often as we’d like but we’ll be going up for grandbaby number ones 2nd birthday and to meet the new little one. So as you can imagine, we are pretty excited and can’t wait until we get there and can spend time spoiling them! Speaking of this heat wave we’re having… rides and road trips are among the most exhilarating pastimes for us during summer months. As temperature patterns rise, however, you need to take steps to maintain proper coolness for your own comfort and health. It is important to know what to wear when riding in this heat. A lot of riders are at a loss regarding what to wear when riding in hot weather because almost anything we wear to ride tends to be warm. For motorcycle rides in hot weather, it is crucial to wear a well ventilated jacket. When it’s really hot out, the best jackets for keeping you cool are mesh jackets. Mesh jackets allow most of the air or wind to pass through to your body but block the heat from the sun, this can make riding feel cooler on hot days thanks to cooling effects of evaporating sweat. Another option is perforated leather with or without zip vents. For these to cool well there must be a lot of holes in the leather for the jacket to keep you cool in the summer heat and zippered vents in the right places really help. Some other things you should wear are gloves with mesh backs, lightweight, moisture-wicking base layers with good ventilation under your jacket and wear a breathable helmet. The best summer motorcycle helmet designs include those constructed of carbon fiber or hybrids of polycarbonate and fiberglass. Also, keep a lot of bottled water on hand and remember to wear sunscreen on any areas that may not be covered during your ride. Stay cool and safe as you ride during this last leg of summer and as always, please patronize our advertisers because they are what keep this magazine going and free to you every month. “KNOWING THE WORD” PS.107:20 “He sent His Word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.” The Word of God is the very foundation for the life of a Christian, but we have been duped by mainstream religion in just reading the Word without an intimate knowledge of the Word. We are told to read the bible from cover to cover once a year and even memorize scriptures as well. Gen.4:1 “And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived” She didn’t conceive by just standing next to Adam, she became intimate with him. You can’t get healed, delivered, or prosper by just carrying your bible under your arm! To really conceive the revelation knowledge of God’s Word, we must be intimate with the Word, by walking it out, then it becomes ours. Matt.8:8 “…but speak the Word only, and my servant shall be healed.” The problem today is we speak everything but the Word, and when we do speak the Word, we add our emotions, clichés and metaphors to it and when it doesn’t work, we blame God. 2 Pet.1:1 “…to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our lord Jesus Christ.” The Word said that when we are born again we receive “like precious faith,” like whom? Just “like” Peter, when Peter would walk by sick people, his shadow would heal them! According to the Word of God, you can’t have any “less faith,” you may be using “less faith,” but you have “like precious faith.” The original text states; “identical faith.” Rom. 12:3 “…God has dealt to every man THE measure of faith.” The key word here is “THE measure,” not “A measure,” we all got the same measure! Phil. 2:5 “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” If we can “have the mind of Christ,” then we surely can have the faith of Christ, we just don’t use it. Philemon 6. “The communication (to release) of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.” For your faith to be “effectual” you must “acknowledge” everything “which is in you in Christ Jesus.”
August 2019
2nd Pet. 1:3 “According as His divine power has given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him…” Everything we will ever need in this “life” and in our Christian walk (godliness) was paid for at the cross, but it only comes “through the knowledge of Him.” All of our natural problems in life are due to a lack of knowledge of God’s word. Gal. 2:20 “…and the life I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God.” Note the word “OF” the Son of God, not “IN” the Son of God, implying the same faith as Jesus Christ! Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

Obi has a zest for life. He is very adventurous and loves to explore his surroundings. He walks pretty well on a leash and loves to be around people. He would do best with an active family. He is playful and extremely intelligent and with a little one on one training will make an awesome companion. He seems to do well around other dogs but wants to chase the kitties. If you look up fun in the dictionary, Obi’s photo will be right there.
Say Hello to Cabo, he is very affectionate and loves to be near his peoples. We believe he is house-trained and knows a few basic commands. He is calm and gentle and great on a leashed walk. He loves to be brushed and pampered too. This boy is up to whatever you are ready for, a weekend in the woods camping or a weekend binge watching your favorite Netflix series.
This pretty girl is Remy, she is currently our longest resident. She is a great girl, she walks awesome on a leash, and she is calm and gentle. She loves to be outside playing with her people. She likes most other dogs, she is a quiet girl. She has house manners and calms right down after being outside playing. She is happiest when she is close to the ones she loves and receiving ear scratches. Remy is just waiting for her new family to find her and give her that happy ever after she longs for. Meet Ruger!!! This handsome hunk of fun will keep you on your toes and laughing at his antics. He is still a young fella and would benefit from a little one on one training. He is playful and loves to run and stretch his legs. He loves his toys and lounging on his bed. He loves people and seems to do well around other dogs. If you are looking for a moderately active pooch to take on hikes Ruger just might be the pooch for you.
We are not sure how Diamond and Hunter are related, they may be brothers, or father and son, no matter their relationship these boys are the absolute best of friends. They are both neutered and up to date on their vaccines. They both recently tested positive for heartworms and have begun treatment. They are not letting that hold them back. They both walk great on a leash (at the same time), they are extremely loving and loyal. They love to play with their people and each other. The Boys come as a pair and must be adopted together. Hello from Hogan!!! This boy is such a meatball. He is goofy and fun. He is a big boy and is learning his leash manners. One of his favorite things is butt scratches, he gives that big ole pittie smile. He enjoys laying on his back and wiggling in the grass, he likes to play with his toys, and he is learning to bring back the ball so you can throw it again. With a little bit of consistency and training he will be a wonderful addition to any family. Max, Max, Max, what can I say about Max? He is a great dog with a quirky personality. This boy is a great walking partner, loves his toys and loves to be near his people. Max can help you rearrange your furniture should the need arise. This boy is very smart, he has learned to move his bed to position it right in front of the fan. He loves to be outside romping and rolling in the grass. He would be the perfect companion for a family with older children, and would love a big fenced yard to play in during the day and his own doggie bed to curl up next to you at night. 6
Beautiful and sweet Tabbi is an awesome gal. Her past is behind her now and her future promises to be much brighter. Tabbi is currently the “office dog”. She is house trained and has great house manners. She walks wonderful on a leash and loves everyone she meets. She is spayed and up to date on her vaccines. Tabbi is looking for a family who will love her and treat her like the princess she is.

SHOTGUNS FOR HOME DEFENSE
W
e’ve probably all heard at one time or another that a shotgun is “the best gun for home defense”. A shotgun IS a great home defense weapon, not necessarily your Grampa’s old rabbit gun, but a proper fighting shotgun. Combat Shotguns usually have barrels shorter than 20 inches and hold more than 5 rounds. There are also a lot of myths about shotguns. We will try to dispel two of the biggest myths. Myth 1. “All you have to do is rack the slide of a shotgun and the bad guys go running”. The first problem with this is if you are close enough for a bad guy to hear you rack the slide, you have already walked into a potentially bad situation with an unloaded gun. The next problem is, does the person that just invaded your house know what that sound is? When I was a kid, most people I knew had experienced a pump shotgun before we were finished with single digit birthdays. Nowadays, they aren’t as popular as they once were, especially with the nefarious crowd so the bad guy on the other side of your door may have never actually heard a pump shotgun cycled. The other problem is, if someone invaded your home to steal for drug money, they may hear it and know what it is, but in a chemically altered state, still not care. Myth 2. “You just point it down the hallway and pull the trigger, you don’t even have to aim it”. Nothing could be further from the truth, in fact, shotguns are actually one of the hardest types of guns to shoot accurately. Some of them don’t even have sights, so you aim (yes, you must aim a shotgun to hit what you are shooting at) by looking down the barrel. This takes a lot of practice to get good at. You also can’t hold a shotgun at your hip and shoot it accurately, even if Arnold Schwarzenegger can, you still can’t. Some think the shot spread will cover a wide enough area so they don’t have to aim, there are several studies on shot spread at 21 feet. Even with the best defensive rounds, the shot spread at 21 feet (about the length of a hallway) can usually be
covered by your opened hand. Now with that out of the way, Shotguns are hard to shoot accurately, slow to load, don’t hold many rounds at all, and they kick hard making follow-up shots more difficult. But in spite of all of these shortcomings, if you are willing to train with them they are still great home defense weapons. If you plan to use a shotgun for home defense, you should practice a lot, and not just standing and shooting at paper targets, you should shoot them from every position you can think of under all kinds of circumstances just as you should with any home defense weapon. Also there are many add-ons for shotguns, they don’t have to look like a decorated Christmas tree, but there are a few that most consider essential. A recoil reducing stock or pad. This not only makes follow-up shots faster, but makes training more enjoyable. A shell carrier, as covered before, shotguns hold very few rounds from a defensive weapon standpoint, so having more ammunition readily available and practicing reloads is vital. A sling, a shotgun is a long gun, and a sling is a good idea on any defensive long gun. A sling is a way to carry the shotgun, if your hands are busy doing something else important you won’t have to put your shotgun down, it’s no good to you or could possibly be used against you if you don’t have it with you. Not to get into defensive tactics, but examples are if you need to move something heavy as a barricade, render medical aid, or carry a loved one to safety. Most also agree a white light should be attached to any home defense gun or kept next to it. A white light on a weapon is not for looking around, and all the reasons to not have a light (they can see me coming, it gives away my position, all great reasons on a battlefield) are outweighed by the single biggest reason to have one for a home defense situation, target identification. Always be sure what you are shooting, and what’s behind it. Make sure you are not aiming at the 16 year old neighbor kid who just discovered alcohol and wandered into the wrong house.

DODGING THE ROADKILL
WHO DO THEY THINK WE ARE? By Hank Bonecutter
that the general public didn’t know the difference he said “they’re smarter than that and can differentiate between the two. Don’t go stirring the shit pot.”
R
ecently there was an incident in nearby Nashville that not only was reckless and dangerous, but laws were broken. An unknown group of individuals on dirt bikes and ATVs were seen riding around the Music City, including downtown Nashville, popping wheelies, running red lights and just causing havoc in one of the busiest places in town.
I respect that. I’ve always been proud of the fact that we can agree to disagree here and not get personal. That’s sort of unique in this day and age where you get shamed and insulted for sharing your opinion online. This blog has always been respectful and has never gotten personal and I’m proud of that fact.
One police officer was injured trying to stop one of them and officials are trying to identify them.
Trust me, I’ve been called out before.
In a later report, one of the news outlets managed to get an interview with a young lady in the group, (who was not identified), and she said that their group was a “positive” rally to show young people that there was more to life than just “drugs and guns.” Huh? I’m not sure that the reckless operation of a dirt bike or any other recreational vehicle is the right example to be setting, but I digress. I’m not going to get into the absurdity of her claim, or the recklessness of their actions, and I’m not going to judge what their intentions were, but I want to talk about perception. I shared the story on my Facebook page and while I encourage and respect ALL opinions that you guys share with me, I was called out for “stirring the shit pot” and it got me to thinking, just who does the public think a biker is? I know who a biker is, but the general public tends to lump us all together as one, especially the ones who don’t like motorcycles to begin with. I guarantee you that most of the people who witnessed this stupid behavior were quick to tell EVERYBODY they knew that “did you see this group of bikers downtown today?” or, “man you should have seen this group of bikers downtown today!” Several of my friends on social media were quick to point out the fact that “they weren’t bikers, they were just a bunch of punks” or “they weren’t bikers, they were thugs.” I agree. One comment stood out to me, “how do you figure it gives bikers a bad name? Had nothing to do with bikers.” When I responded that I felt 10
Bikers know who bikers are. I know who bikers are. I assume all of you know what a “biker” is. But this display doesn’t do any good when it comes to public perception. I’m disappointed that they thought that this was a way to show kids that “there’s more to your life than just drugs and guns.” I also realize that bikers don’t give a DAMN about public perception! Maybe the general public IS smarter than that, but my experience is that they’re not. To a lot of people, we’re “just a damn bunch of bikers” regardless of all the good we may do in our community. The reality is that today’s environment lends itself to casting us ALL into one group. Whites, blacks, latinos, bikers, hunters, gun owners, etc. Anyway, I get called out on occasion, and I appreciate it. I’m not perfect and I’m not always right, never have been. I may be TOTALLY off base with my opinion, but it’s mine and I have to stick with it. I write this blog for ME and I appreciate ALL of your comments. I’ve learned so much about this lifestyle from people like you. It’s been one of the most rewarding things I’ve EVER done in my life. Keep it coming. I have thick skin and I’m not beyond admitting when I’ve stirred the “shit pot.” Here are the links to a couple of the stories from the incidents from WZTV Fox 17 in Nashville. https://fox17.com/news/local/reckless-riders-roam-nashvilleroadways-saturday https://fox17.com/news/local/nashville-officer-injured-in-atvaccident-downtown Photo courtesy of WZTV Fox 17, Nashville

MAGGIE VALLEY, NC
T
he Great Smoky Mountains are unarguably one of the premier motorcycle riding areas in the US. Unfortunately, their popularity for beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife has turned many of the areas into tourist traps and crowded streets. An exception is Maggie Valley, NC. A small town between Waynesville and Cherokee with a little over 1,000 people keeps its small town heritage with mostly mom and pop motels and restaurants. The only chain restaurant is a Subway. It is one of the only places where I would recommend the non-chain motels, over the chains, due to the motorcycle friendly staff and the unique amenities. There is still plenty to do and some great motorcycle roads in the area. Next month, I will give you a route filled with “Waterfalls and Twisties”, that you should be sure to try. One of the premier attractions in town is one of the foremost antique motorcycle museums (plus rare or one-of-a-kind autos), Dale Walksler’s, Dale’s Wheels Through Time Museum. The museum features over 300 rare American motorcycles which actually run! Hence the sub-name The Museum That Runs. You may find Dale walking around the museum and he may start your favorite if you ask. He has been collecting for 57 years and knows each bike intimately. We have been staying each year for over 15 years, with owner/ manager Carole, at the Maggie Valley Creekside Lodge. We like the appreciation of bikers shown to us, as well as the balconies facing the wide creek, and the decks and seating areas with campfire pits along the creek. There are also several other biker friendly motels in the town. Our favorite eating spots, as bikers do love good food, are the Maggie Valley Restaurant (where legendary moonshiner, Popcorn Sutton, hung out until his “they say” suicide took place), Snappy’s for Italian and Pizza (generous veteran’s discounts or $5 off coupons in motels), J Arthur’s for steaks, Joey’s Pancake House, and for a quick treat, Ammon’s Drive In (cash only, but great sandwiches, desserts, and ice cream). All but Joey’s Pancake House and Ammon’s (which is located on Soco Road near Ace Hardware, as you enter Waynesville) are in walking distance of the motel. There are several other restaurants in town for BBQ and an assortment of other meals, to meet your desires. A must stop for the ladies is the “Purple House”, actually the Seven Silver Seas, a jewelry, gift, and clothing store. Authentic craft stores, a motorcycle shop (forgot your raingear?), a distillery, liquor stores, and other places to get necessities are available. The Cherokee Casino is 16 miles away and Waynesville, with grocery and big box stores is about 9.5 miles. On your way to the Casino (to take time and, therefore, cut your losses) stop in an unmarked pull off on the left, with a black fence, 1.3 miles past the Blue Ridge parkway, and visit the unique double Soco Waterfalls. Oh, by the way, the riding in the area is great! The Blue Ridge is between Maggie Valley and Cherokee. Also, you will find motorcycle routes at the front desk of your motel or at the Visitors Center. Don’t forget, next month’s issue of Thunder Roads will have fun route. This is a small town that LOVES motorcycles!! You will see more bikes than cars on Soco Road during the riding season.

BC MOTO INVITATIONAL Returns to Tennessee Motorcycles and Music Revival
T
By Scott High
his October, some of the greatest hand crafted custom bike builders in the business will be bringing their latest creations to Tennessee for all of us to see. Every year at the Tennessee Motorcycles and Music Revival held at the iconic Loretta Lynn’s Ranch, as part of the 4 day event, the BC Moto Invitational is held. Like the first 2, the 3rd annual BC Moto Invitational will be a showcase of some of the best hand crafted custom motorcycle builders from across the country. The BC Moto Invitational is hosted by Bill Dodge, Bill has been building custom motorcycles for almost 30 years, and he is the owner of Bling’s Cycles in Daytona FL and a legend in the custom bike building world. Dodge is known for his simple but functional builds, that can be ridden across country or at 120 mph. Being personally invited by Bill Dodge to display one of your creations at the BC Moto Invitational is a really big deal.
14
Bill started riding and working on bikes as a kid like a lot of us, but he later became the shop foreman of a famous T.V. show bike shop. When he left SoCal he moved to New Jersey, then a stint in Kentucky until he settled in Bling’s Cycles permanent shop in Daytona Beach. Because Bill is one of the top custom motorcycle builders in the world, he has an eye for talent, and he knows who is building the coolest bikes. Every year for the BC Moto Invitational he invites some of the biggest and most wellknown custom motorcycle builders to display one of their creations including Tennessee’s own Boosted Brad, owner of Boosted Brad’s Chop Shop and Death Metal Racing, but he also brings in some new and even unknown or undiscovered builders to the show to display their talents. In years past the bikes on display have been phenomenal and we have no doubt this year’s bikes will be as good or even better. Admission to the show is included with your four day or one day pass to the Tennessee Motorcycles and Music Revival at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch.

THE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE
rom sea to shining sea we have 61 national parks along with hundreds of state parks, national monuments and seashores to enjoy. With gems like Yosemite and the beautiful Bridal Veil Falls, to Glacier with the stunning Going-to-the-Sun Road and the Great Smoky Mountains Clingman’s Dome, the beauty we have in our country is as diverse as the Americans who live here. Our first national park was Yellowstone located in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho. The United States Congress established Yellowstone National Park in 1872. President Ulysses S. Grant signed the Yellowstone National Park Protection Act into law on March 1, 1872 and the first national park was born. Millions of people visit America’s national parks each year. This includes those of us that enjoy riding our motorcycles. We just feel more “in tune” with Mother Nature. The beauty of vistas, mountains, prairies, lakes and chattering creeks can easily take our focus from riding. And, don’t forget the elk, moose, bears, alligators, prairie dogs, squirrels, deer and many other creatures that we may see when visiting their homes. Factoring in all those other park visitors can quickly add major distractions and increment our risk. So, what can we do? In a recent visit to Kings Canyon National Park in California, I had the opportunity to speak with a park ranger who also enjoys riding. She had some wonderful tips for keeping safe on your bike when riding in congested and often challenging roadways. 1. Keep your eyes where you are going and pull off the road to view the scenery. This is beneficial for many reasons. In many of our National Parks, there is limited or no guard rails on the narrow and twisty roads. Remembering that the bike goes where your eyes look and your nose is pointed, this could be a disaster on a steep canyon road. It will also keep you from being too close to the traffic in front of you.

Often, we can get up early and see the park in a very for our National Parks, “Life is a great adventure … accept it special way as the sun rises while others are still snoozing in such a spirit.” I think as one of the family of motorcyclists, under the covers and tucked in their tents. Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: I’ve been spending a lot of time lately on the highway and running through intense traffic in middle Tennessee. While I wish most of this time was on two wheels, I have to confess most of it has been in my truck pulling a 20-foot trailer. As most of you know there are a lot of people moving to middle Tennessee from all over the country and the world. Some legally and some illegally. It’s getting pretty easy to tell who walked across the border, got a job working construction and bought their first beat up car. My guess is they never touched a steering wheel before they got here and some of them think drinking and driving is easier than drinking and walking. Tennessee’s new law prohibiting touching a cell phone while driving apparently doesn’t apply to these drivers and you can pick them out because they can’t stay in their lanes. I reckon they are just trying to drive like the American’s. The American’s who have a cell phone in their hands can’t stay in their lanes either and usually drive about 60 in a 70. What I want to know is who is driving the vehicle when one hand is holding a cell phone to their ear and the other is waving around going batsh*t crazy during their intense wireless discussion. I can only imagine that there’s someone else doing the same thing talking on the other end. With all the time I’ve spent lately on the road, I’ve had time to reflect on the state of our nation’s highways. My first observation is that speed limit signs are useless and expensive. Nobody pays attention to them so why are they there. I’ve been around driving long enough to know that speed limit signs have been just a suggestion to drivers for at least 60 years but back in the day, a policeman would stop you and write you a ticket if you were going over the speed limit. I rarely see cars pulled over for speeding anymore. If a car is pulled over by the police its more likely for drugs, drunk driving, expired license plates, missing lights or someone driving with no pants on. I usually drive 5 miles per hour over the speed limit. That used to be the norm everyone drove to not attract a lot of speeding attention and still shorten the drive time. Today that’s considered blocking traffic!!! Even when I drive 10
mph over the speed limit, I’m getting passed like a NASCAR rookie running with Kyle Busch. It’s just a blur of taillights going passed my side window. I estimate the new accepted speed on the highways is about 90. God forbid you are only speeding 10 mph over in the left lane! You’d think you had slapped a nun and raped their grandmother when the car behind you tries to take your bumper off and give you every emphatic hand gesture known to man and speed to over 120 to make sure you understand how slow you are in your under engineered piece of crap car!!! After all, you don’t rate with elite drivers in 700 horse power, highly polished Prius’s. They want to make sure you are properly snubbed and put in your place as they fly past you with their pink, blue and green hair blowing in the winds of progress! How dare you speed slower than them!! I’ve got my concealed carry permit and keep a 1911 automatic close and handy when I drive. If these nuts get that agitated over my insufficient speeding, I figure they just might take a shot at me. I keep an eye on their side windows and hope the ones that try to run over me are smart enough to roll down their window before taking the shot. I know that’s not great insurance given the failings of our public schools but it’s the best I’ve been able to come up with for advance warning. I have thought about putting hyper-warp window motors in my truck so I can get mine down on short notice to defend myself but I’m sure that is very costly. Besides, if too many people start defending themselves while driving, the politicians will ban touching your handgun while driving and hyper-warp window motors will be next. If America was really the land of the free and the second amendment was honored as written I’d be able to mount rockets and machine guns on my truck to defend myself. I should at least be able to have an air powered javelin launcher at radiator height for tailgaters. Can I get and AMEN!!!! Be safe, the suicidal nuts are everywhere!!!! ‘Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. Clarksville, Tennessee Honors Veterans with 5-Day Celebration in September Clarksville, Tenn. is a community that appreciates veterans. The city borders the Fort Campbell Army Post, so appreciating military service is simply the way of life for both residents and businesses. Beyond the ingrained respect, the community publicly honors its heroes with an annual five-day Welcome Home Veterans Celebration. This year, September 18-22, the community will host multiple activities to celebrate and honor veterans. New activities on tap for 2019 include: • 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit, a tribute to all those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The memorial provides interactive education; including artifacts such as steel beams from the towers, documentary videos, and recordings of first responder radio transmissions. Interactive guided tours are carried out by FDNY firefighters who provide firsthand accounts of the day and its aftermath.
• Traveling Korean War Memorial, consists of 19 soldiers walking through a Korean rice paddy and three soldiers off to the side setting up a campfire. Returning activities for the Celebration Week include: • Lee Greenwood Concert. Enjoy this American music legend in a free outdoor concert. • American Traveling Tribute Wall is an 80-percent scale version of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, DC and contains every name that is etched on the original monument. • Field of Honor – Veterans Tribute flag display is part of a nationally recognized community program that demonstrates the strength and unity of Americans • A Wreath Laying and Massing of the Colors will take place at the Wall.

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)
THE AIM/NCOM MOTORCYCLE E-NEWS SERVICE is brought to you by Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM), and is sponsored by the Law Offices of Richard M. Lester. If you’ve been involved in any kind of accident, call us at 1-(800) ON-A-BIKE or visit www.ON-A-BIKE.com. CONGRESSMAN TIM WALBERG ACCEPTS NCOM SILVER SPOKE AWARD Congressman Tim Walberg (R-MI) was selected as this year’s recipient of the NCOM Silver Spoke Award for Government. Unfortunately, he was not able to attend the 34th Annual NCOM Convention in Orlando, Florida to receive the award in May, so it was brought to Washington, D.C. recently and presented there by several members of the NCOM Board of Directors. NCOM Confederation of Clubs Liaison “Boar”, Region IV CoDirector Ed Schetter and Region VII Co-Director John Bilotta were in the nation’s capital taking part in the Motorcycle Riders Foundation “Bikers Inside the Beltway” and meeting with their legislators and staff members. During the visit to the Capitol, they met with Congressman Walberg and personally presented the award on behalf of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) in recognition of his work in Congress for the benefit of all of America’s motorcycle riders. Representative Walberg introduced the recently-passed House Resolution that addresses profiling of motorcyclists and he and Representative Michael Burgess (R-TX) head up the Congressional Motorcycle Caucus. MISSOURI GOVERNOR VETOES REPEAL OF MOTORCYCLE HELMET LAW Missouri Governor Mike Parson vetoed Senate Bill 147 on Friday, July 12, a bill that would have allowed most adult motorcycle riders to ride without helmets. Despite voting in favor of such legislation in the past as a state legislator, the Republican governor blocked the omnibus transportation measure which, among other things, would have repealed Missouri's helmet requirement for motorcyclists 18 and older who carry medical insurance. Gov. Parson didn't express opposition to relaxing helmet requirements for motorcyclists, but in a letter to lawmakers he wrote that he vetoed the bill because of a section that dealt with suspending driver's licenses over unpaid fines related to traffic violations, which his office deemed to be unconstitutional. Bikers rights activists and state lawmakers have been trying decades to repeal the helmet requirement, passing bills to do so in 1999 that was vetoed by then-Gov. Mel Carnahan, and again in 2009 that was vetoed by Gov. Jay Nixon, both Democrats. “The Governor was looking forward to signing this bill and still 32
supports freedom of choice,” wrote Jay Widmer, Legislative Coordinator for Freedom of Road Riders (FORR-MO) on their Facebook page. “We are working toward a meeting with the Governor and his staff to work with them towards a remedy.” NORTH CAROLINA LEGALIZES MOTORCYCLISTS WEARING FACE MASKS Like many states, North Carolina law generally “prohibits a person from wearing a mask, hood, or other device, to conceal the identity of the wearer,” with limited exceptions which now includes; “a person may wear a mask for the purpose of protecting the person's head, face, or head and face, when operating a motorcycle.” House Bill 257/Senate Bill 321 “An Act to permit the use of a face mask while operating a motorcycle,” was signed into law by Governor Ray Cooper (D) on July 11, 2019 and goes into effect December 1st. Amidst nationwide furor over political groups like Antifa wearing masks while engaging in civil unrest, HB 257 passed the House on March 27 by a vote of 111-1 and companion bill SB 321 passed the Senate unanimously on June 27, 48-0. Law enforcement officers in some states had begun stopping and citing motorcycle riders, particularly patch holders, for violating local anti-mask laws. The new law will “require the person to remove the mask during traffic stops, checkpoints, roadblocks, or when approached by a law enforcement officer.” NEW WASHINGTON LAW REQUIRES LIABILITY INSURANCE FOR MOTORCYCLES Washington motorcycle owners must make sure their rides are insured once a new law goes into effect on July 28, 2019, requiring motorcycle operators to obtain and carry proof of liability insurance coverage when cruising on Washington’s roadways. The new rules stem from House Bill 1014, which was signed into law in April by Governor Jay Inslee (D). Unlike other motor vehicle drivers, in virtually every other state, motorcycle riders in Washington have previously been exempt from obtaining and carrying proof of insurance. According to an April 23 statement from the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Bill Jenkin (R-Prosser), the law will require those operating a motorcycle to meet the insurance requirements, or equivalent, for registered motor vehicles under current law; 25/50/10 - Bodily Injury Liability Coverage: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident, and Property Damage Liability Coverage: $10,000. OREGON TO INCLUDE MOTORCYCLISTS UNDER “VULNERABLE ROADWAY USER” Back in 2007, the Oregon legislature passed House Bill 3314, creating an enhanced penalty for careless driving if it contributes to serious physical injury or death to a “vulnerable user of a public way”, providing legal protections for nonmotorized roadway users such as bicyclists and pedestrians.

The concept of “vulnerable roadway user” had previously been widely used by planners and safety organizations in Europe to categorize and describe non-motorized roadway users, incorporating the inherent vulnerability of humans who use the roads without the benefit of being encased in a 4-wheeled protective steel cage. On June 11, 2019, Governor Kate Brown (D) signed Senate Bill 810 into law, modifying the definition of "vulnerable user of a public way" in Oregon to now include persons operating or riding on a moped or motorcycle. THOUSANDS RIDE TO HONOR SEVEN BIKERS KILLED IN NEW HAMPSHIRE CRASH More than 3,000 motorcyclists rode across New Hampshire on Saturday, July 6 on the “Ride for the Fallen 7” to honor seven bikers killed and three injured in a collision with an oncoming pickup truck in June, as state police escorted the group along the 90 mile route to the site of the deadly crash. The victims were Marine veterans and their spouses, members of the Jarheads Motorcycle Club, who were traveling west on Route 2 on their way to a charity event, when a pickup truck and trailer crossed into their lane from the opposite direction, plowing through the pack, according to a criminal complaint. Commercial trucker, 23-year-old Volodymyr Zhukovskyy of West Springfield, Mass., an immigrant from the Ukraine with a documented history of multiple drug and alcohol arrests and convictions in numerous states, has pleaded not guilty to seven charges of negligent homicide. In the days following the fatal accident, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation revealed Zhukovskyy had received an intoxicated driving charge in Connecticut in May, which should have led to the termination of his Massachusetts commercial drivers license. Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker (R) has announced changes to the state’s Registry of Motor Vehicles, which include running all 5.2 million licenses through the National August 2019
Driver Register to keep suspension information up to date and creating a new position to oversee safety and set requirements for commercial drivers in the state. On July 13, as thousands more gathered at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., for a memorial service organized by the Jarheads MC, New England Patriots NFL team owner Robert Kraft made a surprise appearance to present a $100,000 donation to the crash victims’ GoFundMe campaign. PRANK LANDS MAN IN JAIL FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER OF MOTORCYCLIST Late one night, on the morning after Christmas, a 45-year-old motorcyclist in Japan got a rope tangled around his neck causing him to dump his bike, severely injuring his back and hip. Luckily, the man who strung the rope across the road was caught on security camera footage, and Japanese police quickly tracked him down and charged him with attempted murder. Japan Today reports that police arrested Koichi Deki, 41, who claims the rope strung across the road was nothing more than a “stress relieving prank.” There is no indication whether Deki knew a motorcyclist was coming down the road when he tied a rope to a sign and a pole on the other side of the street, and he is quoted as saying he did it to relieve his stress and didn’t think his “rope prank” could kill anyone. The motorcyclist hit the rope roughly 15 seconds after the rope was stretched across the road, according to the time code on the surveillance footage, and now the prankster faces a prison sentence of several years. A trucker’s wife sees 3 parrots for sale; $170, $150 & $10. She asks why the last parrot is so cheap? The pet store owner said it was raised in a whore house. The woman laughs and buys it. She gets home with the parrot and as soon as she brings it through the door the parrot says, “Wow! a new ho’ house!”. The woman laughs. When her 2 daughters come over to see the new pet, the parrot says, “Dang!! 2 new gals!”. They all laugh. When her husband walks in the door, the parrot yells out, “Hey Joe! Man, I swear if I see just one more person texting while driving I’m gonna’ put my window down, pull up next to them, and throw my beer at them. --------------------------------------------------------------An elementary school class goes on a field trip to the police station. The Officer points to the 10 Most Wanted list and tells them that these are the most wanted fugitives in the U.S.A. Lil’ Joey points to the #1 man on the list and asks, ‘So this guy here is the most wanted man in the entire country?’ The Officer says ‘That’s right young man, he has dodged us for almost 5 years now.’ Lil’ Joey asks ‘Well, not tryin’ to tell you how to do your job, but why didn’t you just hold onto him after you were done taking his picture?’ --------------------------------------------------------------So Lil’ Joey and his Family are at the local campground and it’s his turn to walk their dog. He takes him to a wooded area near the lake and let’s their dog ‘Rebel’ take a dump. A Park Ranger zooms up on his Segway and Lil’ Joey is standing there holding his beloved pitbull. The Ranger says, ‘Did you just allow your dog to take a crap right near the lake? Did you not read the sign?’ Lil’ Joey says ‘Yeah, I read the sign and did exactly like it said.’ The Park Ranger looks at Lil’ Joey holding Rebel and reads the sign out loud; If Your Dog Poops, Please Pick It Up! --------------------------------------------------------------A man walks into a drug store with his 8-year old son. They happen to walk by the condom display, and the boy asks, ‘What are these, Dad?’ The man matter-of-factly replies,‘Those are called condoms, son. Men use them to have safe sex.’ ‘Oh I see, replied the boy. Yes, we learned about that in Health class at school.’ He looks over the display and picks up a package of 3 and asks, ‘Why are there 3 in this package?’ The dad replies, ‘Those are for high school boys, one for Friday, one for Saturday, and one for Sunday.’ ‘Cool’ says the boy. He notices a 6 pack and asks, ‘Then who are these for?’ ‘Those are for college men,’ the dad answers, ‘Two for Friday, two for Saturday, and two for Sunday.’ ‘WoW!’ exclaimed the boy, ‘Then who uses these?’ he asks, picking up a 12 pack. With a heavy sigh and a tear in his eye, the Dad replied, ‘Those are for married men son, one for January, one for February, one for March.......’
