ello Thunder Roads Tennessee Readers! I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of hearing about all the COVID-19 crap, so let’s talk about the weather, shall we? Back in the winter I recall asking around about how cold was too cold to ride. Well, now it’s Hades-hot here, hitting near 100 degrees today so I don’t think I’ll be on the bike until it cools off 10-15 degrees. So my question is, how HOT does it have to be outside for you to hang up the boots and ride another day? Scott doesn’t care, he’ll ride as long as there isn’t ice or snow on the roads, but for the record, as if anyone cared about my .02 cents, but I’ll share anyway… I’ll ride down in the 50’s in winter properly geared up, but in the summer when we get near 90 around here, I’ve reached my personal comfort limit. It’s not just the heat that gets me, it’s the miserable humid buggy oppressive heat that makes me pray for death when stuck at a long red light in the sun. I might lose the ATGATT in summertime enough to shed my jacket, but long pants, boots, helmet and gloves are a daily necessity. I won’t do the shorts n’ flipflops riding thing. I have found that whatever the air temperature is, subtract 10-15 degrees and that’s what it will feel like on the bike, that’s what you should dress for. In these high-heat conditions it’s important to keep cool properly while riding. Remember to hydrate, keep your skin covered, and avoid hazards. Don’t let the heat weaken you to the point where you’re not fully attentive to traffic conditions and the road. Basically, you must consider how your body will deal with the heat. Reducing the effects of convection, through covering up and wetting down, will reduce the amount of heat that your body must deal with through evaporation. Covering up in the heat will keep you cool. Hot weather usually means lots of sun exposure, so get some good sunglasses or a darkened visor to prevent headaches caused by sun glare. And don’t forget to put sunblock on the back of your neck where your riding gear leaves the skin exposed. It was stock when I purchased it. I always liked the old school look of HarleyDavidsons. I had an idea of what I wanted and consulted with my good friend, Jeff Cuddy of Bag Dragger Customs. All I told him was the color I wanted and the old school look and he took it from there. I trusted Jeff enough to let him do what he does and told him the price point I could do and he delivered. It was my dream bike. He wouldn’t let me see it until he was done. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised. I started riding in my early forties (mid-life crisis). I came home one day and told my husband I bought a Harley-Davidson Dyna Lowrider (my first bike) with no idea how to ride. I learned how to ride on a Honda 100 dirt bike and the rest is history. One of the photos is before the transformation and the other photos are me and of the bike builder.

FORT DONELSON NATIONAL BATTLEFIELD

es, long-time readers, I did do an article on Fort Donelson in the past. First, thanks for reading Thunder Roads Tennessee, faithfully. Second, as our history is being erased and defaced by a small group of uneducated, radical thugs, it is important to visit our historic sites before these “people” destroy things they “are bothered by” or “for the sheer hell of it”, because the police’s hands are tied. These small groups have even defaced Jimmy Hendrix, Abraham Lincoln, Christopher Columbus, military heroes, police, the first black soldier in the Revolutionary War memorials, and want to blast the faces of presidents off of Mount Rushmore and the figures on Stone Mountain. We are in a state of mob rule, so visit history before our politicians give in to the mobs and we don’t have these places. Since our recent visit to Fort Donelson, the Confederate Memorial has been “tagged”. Fort Donelson is located at 120 Lock D Road in Dover TN, right off of US 79 S. It was the site of a battle that led to the defeat of the Confederate soldiers and the following fall of Clarksville and Nashville to the Union Troops. It consists of original ramparts with cannon displays and historical markers. Bald eagle sightings are frequent. The Confederate troops, under the command of John Floyd, Gideon Pillow, Simon Buckner, and Bushrod Johnson, manned a crucial fort at the confluence of the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers. It guarded the route to Clarksville, Nashville, and, ultimately Atlanta. On February 14, 1862, U.S. Grant, supported by Andrew

H. Foote’s Union fleet consisting of six gunboats attacked the fort. After initially driving the Union back and avoiding being encircled by the Union, the Confederates missed their opportunity to escape to Nashville. Grant was receiving reinforcements daily and overwhelmed the South’s positions. Floyd and Pillow, with about 2,000 men, turned over command to Buckner and slipped to Nashville. Nathan Bedford Forrest and his cavalry crossed the Lick Creek and escaped. Buckner was forced to surrender on February 18th, giving the North its first major victory and U. S. Grant the nickname, “Unconditional Surrender” Grant, and promotion to Major General. This victory gave the North control of the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers, area railroads, control over Kentucky, Middle and West Tennessee, and opened up the heartland of the Confederacy. Ultimately, Robert E. Lee was forced to surrender to Grant at Appomattox, propelling Grant to the presidency. Be sure to visit the adjacent Fort Donelson National Cemetery where the Union dead of this battle are buried. Currently the Visitors Center and all restrooms are closed. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! PRINCIPLES OF A SELF DEFENSE CLAIM – INNOCENCE
H
ello fellow bikers. Last month’s Bullet Points column dealt with the potential legal jeopardy you may face when the “unimaginable happens.” - You have found yourself in a rapidly escalating altercation and have taken responsibility for your safety – and perhaps your life. In the rapid chaos of the altercation you have used lethal force to protect yourself – or perhaps a friend or family member. Your freedom will inevitably require you to have a legitimate self-defense claim. As I stated in last month’s column, there are five essential questions which need to be answered in the affirmative for your self-defense claim: 1. Innocence 2. Imminence 3. Proportionality 4. Avoidance 5. Reasonableness All five of these components must be in your favor for you to have a legitimate selfdefense claim. If they are, you will prevail. If they are not all answered affirmatively, you may spend a very long time in prison. This month we will focus on Innocence. Innocence After the dust settles, you must be viewed as the innocent party. While this may seem easy enough to prove, there are many things which can happen which makes you the aggressor. In an altercation, the aggressor is generally going to be viewed as the person who threw the first punch, brandished a knife or pulled a gun. In some states, words alone can cause you to be the aggressor. Tennessee’s law is a bit vague with regards to who the aggressor is: Tennessee 39-11-611 (e) The threat of force against another is not justified: (1) If the person using force consented to the exact force used or attempted by the other individual; (2) If the person using force provoked the other individual’s use or attempted use of unlawful force Provocation is the key to Tennessee’s self-defense claim and the fact that Tennessee has not clearly defined provocation, you must CLEARLY be the innocent party – not the provocateur. Additionally, you can easily find yourself in a position where competing narratives of the event may portray you as the aggressor – especially if the witnesses are friends of the thug you were protecting yourself from. If this proves to be the case, an overzealous prosecutor may well pursue charges against you. Proportionality, or the lack thereof, can also cause you to be viewed as the aggressor, not the innocent party. If the thug you are protecting yourself from throws the first punch, but you immediately escalate the encounter by pulling a concealed firearm, you will be in serious jeopardy of losing your innocence – and your claim of selfdefense. There are a few other actions which may cause you to lose your claim of innocence: Pursuit/Sustainment – If you pursue or sustain the altercation you will no longer be considered the innocent party. In other words, if the thug decides fighting you is
not in his best interest, and verbally communicates he is disengaging, and you try to sustain or further pursue him, you will become the aggressor. Mutual Combat – If after a brush up with the aforementioned thug, you agree to take the fight outside, you will have lost your innocence – and perhaps sunk your entire self-defense claim. Escalation – This was mentioned earlier, and should be reinforced. If you find yourself in a fist fight, or a war of words, do not escalate the encounter beyond what it is – a nonlethal fight. If you pull your pistol at this point, you will be considered the aggressor or provocateur – meaning you are in serious legal trouble. If you find yourself in a position where you may have lost your innocence in the altercation, you may still be able to regain your innocence. Tennessee 39-11-611(e)(2) unless… (A) The person using force abandons the encounter or clearly communicates to the other the intent to do so; and (B) The other person nonetheless continues or attempts to use unlawful force against the person The Tennessee statue is clear here. You must attempt to disengage from the altercation and most importantly, you should verbally communicate (preferably loud enough to be heard by everyone nearby) your desire to end the affray. At this point, if the thug pursues the fight – or escalates it – you may well regain your innocence. One other consideration you must keep in mind. Being under the influence of alcohol or drugs will sink a self-defense claim. If you are planning on enjoying some adult beverages, leave your gun at home – or locked up where you cannot gain access to it. If you are under the influence and find yourself in a life-or-death situation, your best defense is not going on the offense. If you pull your sidearm under these conditions – even if you are innocent – you are in serious legal jeopardy. If you have your weapon you must make the choice between potential death and a very long incarceration. But you risk much if you put yourself in this situation. As you can well see, innocence is something which can be lost very easily in a selfdefense claim. Tennessee statues are somewhat vague with regards to which party is the aggressor. You must be viewed as the innocent party or you risk a very long and expensive legal fight – a fight which may be for your freedom. And, if by unfortunate circumstances you have lost your claim of innocence, you must actively communicate and disengage from the fight to potentially regain your claim of innocence. Next month, we will focus on the second component of a self-defense claim: Imminence. Stay tuned, and until then, keep the shiny side up. “MIND GAMES” Rom. 12:2 “And be not conformed to this world; but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…” As most of you know our Ministry is dedicated towards the Recovery Community, with support group meetings almost every night of the week, Sunday sermons are geared towards recovery. With this current pandemic, we have had some go back to their addictions and some even committed suicide. Addicts can go through treatment centers, recovery homes, support groups, and even join a church ministry, and still relapse. They can be very sincere and put forth their best effort and still fail. The mind is a very powerful thing, it can be used for good or evil. When we become Christians, our spirit man gets saved, but our bodies will not be saved until Jesus comes back for us, and our minds are being saved. If our bodies were saved, we wouldn’t get old, if our minds were saved we wouldn’t have some of the crazy thoughts that we have. Paul warns us not to be “conformed to this world,” not to be conformed to this age. There is an old American Indian proverb; “we all have a good dog and a bad dog inside of us, when they get into a fight which one will win? The one you feed the most!” Everything we do in life will always start in the mind. Recovery starts in the mind first. God’s word tells us that if we want to be “transformed” it can only happen “by the renewing of your mind.” One can be saved, on their way to heaven, but live a miserable life because they have been “conformed to this world.” You can only renew your mind by the Word of God. We all know beforehand what is going to happen to our lives once we become addicts. We know it is going to cost us our family, our jobs, our health, our freedom and our future, yet we have people becoming new addicts every day. The truth of the matter, we have been conformed to this world. Some have been clean & sober for years but still go back to their addictions knowing exactly what it is going to cost them. Drug dealers are now selling Narcan with the heroin with the full knowledge that the heroin could kill you without the Narcan, but yet it doesn’t deter the users at all because they have been conformed

to this world. They can be faithful members of a church, attend support groups, and yet go back to their addictions. As a former alcoholic and drug addict, I have been clean and sober for thirty-two years! What is the key to my success? I have Renewed my mind daily to the Word of the living God, I know this works because it is not a religion but an intimate relationship with my heavenly Father. Rom.7:25 “I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord, so then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.” Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: I’ve been talking to a lot of good folks lately who are waking up to our nation being in deep trouble. They are unhappy with the coronavirus and explosive Black Lives Matter (BLM) power plays. However, at the same time they are paralyzed by thinking these things will pass, that someone will come to the rescue, set everything straight, neuter the anarchists and keep their future secure. What if I told you that at this time next year all police departments in this country as we have known them will be disbanded and replaced with enforcement by members of BLM, Antifa and other radical communist groups. That if Joe Biden is elected and if the congress is run by the radical Democrats this new “police force” will take action to force the general public to comply with radical communist commandments and doctrine. That the Supreme Court will no longer exist and will be replaced by a group of selected “Leftist experts” who will decide what is legal and lawful. That this new government will mandate what you earn and transform our society into a work force that lives on regime subsistence. That all American corporations will be nationalized and run by the state. Personal investments, money and property will be confiscated for redistribution. Faith in God will be stamped out. That anyone who resists or speaks out against these new government rules and laws will be arrested and either jailed in a re-education camp or simply executed. Understand that Black Lives Matter is a communist political organization being run by terrorists, racists and radicals who hate America and they grow bolder by the day. This is coming if the American people don’t stand up and stop the madness. We have Muslim congresswomen talking about converting everyone to Islam. Joe Biden says he’ll send the military to disarm us. We have politicians in both parties willing to kill or modify the constitution to remove personal freedoms. The only voices I hear standing up to this or questioning this revolution is President Donald Trump and the people in his administration. Where is the rest of America? I’ve seen some patriotic people and minorities on the Laura Ingram and Tucker Carlson shows trying to wake up the nation but you only see support on ABC, NBC, CBS and other networks for this

communist revolution. They are still using the coronavirus and the lie that Black Lives Matter is about saving black lives to cloak the revolution and keep us separated. The truth is Black Lives Matter hasn’t said or done anything about black children being murdered or the uncontrolled violence in minority communities. Black Lives Matter is a political party raising money with a stated mission of destroying America and turning it into a communist utopia. You only have to look at the number of politicians who remain silent or are paving the way for them to overthrow our nation to see this is a movement that has been in the planning for a long time. Obama installed radical leftists in every government activity and since he left office has stayed in Washington to continue to manage and organize the overthrow of our government. It’s not just him, it’s a whole list of people who have power and money and are committed to instituting communism here. Communist sympathizers subverted our education system and media a long time ago. The commies read 45 goals into the congressional record in 1963. The ongoing propaganda and indoctrination have largely been successful. The pandemic scare combined with the national uprising to do away with the police is largely being tolerated by millions of Americans who are hiding behind their couch and submitting to the loss of their constitutional rights. You can’t stick your head in the sand far enough to escape what is happening!! Business, sports, state and local governments and schools are bowing to this revolution! If this revolution is successful and wins the election in November, you’ll only have to choose whether to bow your head and submit to harsh communist oppression or stand against it and likely die in your front yard or in a prison. It has happened with every communist revolution and millions of people who tried to stand for personal rights and freedom were summarily executed. Social Justice is just the slogan for communist overthrow. Where do you stand??? Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. he 6th Annual Spring Redneck Rumble may have gotten delayed by the coronavirus, but there’s no stopping a bunch of gearheads when they are ready to get together. June 20th saw the Wilson County Fairgrounds filled with every imaginable hot rod, custom car, rat rod and cool motorcycle from all across the country. The huge swap meet never disappoints, and live music on Saturday along with flat track motorcycle races Saturday evening, set the Rumble apart from all the wanna be newcomers. MISSOURI REPEALS HELMET LAW FOR MANY ADULT RIDERS Missouri has become the 32nd state to repeal their all-rider helmet law when Governor Mike Parson (R) signed House Bill 1963 into law on July 14; a massive transportation bill that includes a provision to allow adults to ride a motorcycle or trike without a helmet, provided they are at least 26 years old and have appropriate health insurance. The new rules, which will go into effect August 28, also restrict police from pulling over helmetless riders to check f they have the required health insurance. Sponsored by GOP Representative Travis Fitzwater, H.B. 1963 states in part: “Currently, every person operating or riding a motorcycle or motortricycle is required to wear protective headgear (Sections 302.020 and 302.026). This bill provides that persons under the age of 26 who are operating or riding as a passenger on a motorcycle or motortricycle shall wear a helmet when the vehicle is in motion. Similarly, a person who is 26 or older, is operating a motorcycle or motortricycle, and who has been issued an instruction permit shall wear a helmet when the vehicle is in motion. No political subdivision of the state shall impose a protective headgear requirement on the operator or passenger of a motorcycle or motortricycle. No person shall be stopped, inspected, or detained solely to determine compliance with these provisions (Section 302.020.2). The bill also provides that qualified operators who are 26 or older may operate a motorcycle or motortricycle without a helmet if he or she is covered by a health insurance policy or other form of insurance which will provide the person with medical benefits for injuries incurred as a result of a motorcycle or motortricycle accident. Proof of such coverage shall be provided on request of law enforcement by showing a copy of the qualified operator’s insurance card. No person shall be stopped, inspected, or detained solely to determine compliance with these provisions (Section 302.026).” “We really feel everything in this bill has been well vetted,” Tony Shepherd, who lobbied in support of repealing the helmet law for a motorcycle rights group, ABATE for Missouri, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Other organizations supporting the measure were the Missouri Confederation of Clubs & Independents (CoC), and Freedom of the Road Riders of Missouri (FORRMO), which has been lobbying to repeal the “Show Me” state’s helmet law for decades, successfully getting a bill on their governor’s desk four times since 1999 only to be vetoed. Last year, Gov. Parson vetoed a similar measure that would have allowed anyone older than 18 to ride without a helmet, though his veto was centered on a separate provision in that legislation. SWEEPING INFRASTRUCTURE BILL PASSED THE HOUSE, GOES TO THE SENATE On July 1, 2020 the House of Representatives passed by a vote of 233-188 its signature infrastructure legislation, the Moving Forward Act, H.R.2 (previously the INVEST in America Act); providing over $1.5 trillion in federal spending across a wide range of infrastructure areas including surface transportation, water, aviation, broadband, healthcare, and energy. Included in the massive 2,213-page plan to rebuild and expand America’s transportation infrastructure like highways, vehicle safety and public transit, the new 5-year federal funding measure also addresses several concerns voiced by motorcyclists. As originally introduced in June, the INVEST in America Act included a provision 18 18
to increase Motorcycle Safety Funds to states by 25%, to $5.8 million. Added by unanimous consent during markup of H.R. 2 by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee were three amendments to: Extend the prohibition against using federal funding for motorcycle-only checkpoints and also prohibits using federal funds to profile and stop motorcyclists based on of their mode of transportation or style of dress; Require the Department of Transportation to consider motorcycles in safety studies on autonomous vehicles and includes a motorcycle safety group in the DOT working group on autonomous vehicle deployment; An extension of the Motorcyclist Advisory Council including a seat on the council for motorcyclists’ rights groups and manufacturers. An additional motorcyclist-friendly amendment was approved during the final floor vote in the House to provide federal monies to collect state profiling data regarding traffic stops based on “mode of transportation.” H.R.2 now goes over to the Senate for further action, where Republicans have expressed opposition to the bill as written by the Democrat-controlled House, as well as a veto threat from the Administration, citing the Act’s spending levels, regulatory changes, and climate change-related provisions. ‘ANTIQUE MOTORCYCLE ENTHUSIAST DAY’ A Congressional Resolution, H.Res.1041 was introduced in the House to recognize July 11, 2020 as “Antique Motorcycle Enthusiast Day” to recognize “the preservation, restoration, and operation of old-time motorcycles in the United States.” Sponsored by Representative Troy Balderson (R-OH) and co-sponsored by GOP Reps Michael Burgess (TX), and Tim Walberg (MI), House Resolution 1041 states; Whereas many people in the United States own, restore, preserve, study, or admire motorcycles that fall into the antique category, meaning they are at least 35-years old; Whereas the collection, restoration, and preservation of motorcycles is an activity shared across generations and across all segments of society; Whereas thousands of local motorcycle clubs and related businesses have been instrumental in preserving a historic part of the heritage of the United States by encouraging the restoration and exhibition of such historic works of art; Whereas the restoration of motorcycles provides well-paying, highly skilled jobs for people in all 50 States; and Whereas, for over a century, motorcycles have been a source of family enjoyment, photographs, songs, movies, and an iconic fashion statement in the United States: Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the House of Representatives – (1) supports the designation of “Antique Motorcycle Enthusiast Day”; (2) recognizes the effect of the more than 120-year history of the American motorcycle and the economic surge that celebrated over 120 American brands in the United States in the first half of the 20th Century; (3) recognizes that the collection and restoration of vintage and classic motorcycles is an important part of preserving the technological achievements and cultural heritage of the United States; and (4) encourages the people of the United States to engage in events and commemorations of “Antique Motorcycle Enthusiast Day” in accordance with public health guidelines that create opportunities for antique motorcycle owners to educate young people about the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of the United States, including through the preservation of antique motorcycles.

GLOBAL MOTORCYCLE SALES BOUNCE BACK AFTER PANDEMIC SLUMP After a strong start to 2020, motorcycle sales plummeted in March when the Coronavirus forced most of the world’s population into lockdown, but with life gradually resuming, sales are bouncing back better than expected despite -- or perhaps because of -- the pandemic. An increasing number of pundits and publications predict that the pandemic will encourage more people to turn to motorcycles and scooters for transportation -- the perfect type of commuter for social distancing. Although the first quarter of motorcycle sales are down 10.6%, they’re selling better than cars which are down 12%. In the U.S., according to rideapart.com, Honda, BMW, Suzuki, and Yamaha’s North American branches reported that sales are thriving since the beginning of the year, particularly in the off-road segment. The European market is showing a similar, positive trend; Italian sales numbers for June 2020 show a 37% increase over June 2019, while sales in the U.K. surpassed June 2019 levels by 14.3%. The market is also on the mend in hard-hit India where local branches report sales are on the rise after the May slump. In the Land Down Under, according to the Australian Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, sales for the second quarter were also up year over year. In spite of a rocky Q1, the global motorcycle industry is faring far better than most expected. STURGIS STILL ON, AS OFFICALS SEND COVID-TESTERS TO HELP OUT South Dakota health officials are sending 20 COVID-19 testing machines capable of producing tests in minutes to help carry out the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally amid the Coronavirus pandemic. The 80th edition of the annual rally is expected to attract thousands of people to western South Dakota for the iconic biker rally, running August 7-16. The Rapid City Journal reports that the city council decided to cautiously proceed with the 10-day rally after realizing motorcycle enthusiasts were going to show up regardless. Likewise, the Horry County City Council realized that there was no stopping the Myrtle Beach Spring Rally, which has gone on for 81 years, despite being postponed from May to July due to the virus. The 97th Laconia Motorcycle Week has been similarly rescheduled from June to August 22-30, with their City Council’s consent. ABATE of Iowa reportedly held an “Amazing Weekend” 36th annual Freedom Rally in Algona over July Fourth, and even county officials were “pleasantly surprised” by the responsible behavior exhibited by thousands of motorcyclists in attendance. Unfortunately, though, an estimated twenty-two major rallies have been AUGUST 2020
canceled so far this year, including the National H.O.G. Rally on the Gold Coast, Americade, Hog Wild, Mountainfest, Panama Beach Spring Rally, Roar on the Shore, Rolling Thunder, ROT Rally, Smoke Out, Thunder in the Smokies, Thunder in the Valley, Quail Motorcycle Gathering, Wauseon, Wing Ding 42, and INTERMOT, the motorcycle industry’s big show in Germany, was canceled, while America’s AIMExpo was “postponed” to next year. Many races have also been canceled or postponed; World Superbike and MotoGP races, American Flat Track, Isle of Man TT, Pikes Peak, as well as Motocross and Supercross. Easyriders has canceled their Bike Shows and Rodeos. But as of now Arizona Bike Week is still on, October 7-11 in Scottsdale, as is the Four Corners Rally over Labor Day in Durango, CO, Reno’s Street Vibrations’ Spring Rally was postponed but their Fall Rally, Sept 24-27 is still “scheduled to happen,” Daytona’s Biketoberfest Oct 15-18 is currently proceeding, Golden Aspen canceled their May Aspen Cash Rally but reports their Golden Aspen Rally September 16-20 in Ruidoso, N.M. is still on, the Lone Star Rally in Galveston, TX has been “postponed” until November 4-7, 2021, Harley Rendezvous postponed, Mama Tried postponed, and AMA Vintage Days postponed, with new dates TBA. NCOM CONVENTION TO HONOR FALLEN RIDERS; INVITES NAMES FOR TRIBUTE With the 35th Annual NCOM Convention in Indianapolis now just weeks away, the National Coalition of Motorcyclists is requesting that MROs, motorcycle clubs, and riding associations submit the names of those members and bikers’ rights activists who have died since last May’s Convention, so that we may honor their memories during the traditional “Ringing of the Bell” tribute to fallen riders. The brunette shakes her head, smiles and says, “My sister’s blonde. Test 3: Go upstairs and sexually satisfy this old hooker, she claims she’s never actually been sexually satisfied in her entire life.” Guy slams his beer on the bar, puts his $100 in the jar, walks over to the Bouncer and Boom!, knocks his ass out. Slams another 3 beers and heads out back. They all hear the pit barking, growling and yelping the guy is yelling and screaming. There’s things being broken and general mayhem when the guy walks back in the bar and man, is he ever torn up and bleeding from head to toe. He slams 3 more beers and asks, ‘alright then mate, where the hell is this hooker with the infected tooth?”

f you are out riding in the Tellico Plains area, there’s a great place to try. That is if you like fresh baked pastries and breads. If it’s the pastries you’re interested in, you should get there early as these usually sell out fast. Some of the pastries you may find are chocolate croissants, cream cheese Danish, scones, carrot cake muffins, chocolate ganache cupcakes, cinnamon rolls sticky nut buns, cherry and apple turnovers, cookies, brownies, pound cakes, banana walnut bread and it’s all baked fresh every day using all natural and many local sourced ingredients. Selections do vary depending on the season. Also made fresh daily is a variety of breads; white, wheat, cranberry pecan, deli rye, pumpernickel rye, walnut raisin and flatbread. Their sourdough starter has been cultivating at the bakery for years. It is a “Real Deal” bakery. The building that houses the business was built in 1907 and had been used for many things including a bank. The bank safe is still there and used for ingredients storage. As owners, Stuart and Anissa Shull renovated to turn it into a bakery, they wanted to preserve as much of the building’s history as possible. So as the building evolved, so has the bakery. You can get several kinds of hand crafted sandwiches made fresh to order with their fresh baked breads. Too numerous to list them all, but I will tell you about the one I had. It is called Stus Reuben. It’s made with freshly sliced pastrami and corned beef piled high with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and homemade 1001 island dressing on pumpernickel rye. Of all the Reuben’s I have had, this one was the best ever. My wife, Sandy, had the Roasted Pecan Chicken Salad. It’s made with tender chicken breast, red grapes, pecans, celery, red onion, lemon herb aioli, topped with local organic sprouts on their signature bakery hoagie roll. All sandwiches are toasted. As if the baked fresh daily pastries, sandwiches and breads aren’t enough, they also have a brick wood fired pizza oven. The pizza dough is made fresh daily. As I talked to Stuart the day I was there, it became clear of his dedication to provide nothing less than the best. The fact that after 18 years of baking they do sell out on a daily basis speaks of their success in providing the best.
