BULLET POINTS
MYTH VS FACTS ABOUT SUPPRESSORS (NOT SILENCERS) By Scott High Wikipedia defines a Suppressor as a… A suppressor, sound suppressor, sound moderator, or silencer is a device attached to or part of the barrel of a firearm or air gun, which reduces the amount of noise and visible muzzle flash generated by firing. Suppressors are typically constructed of a metal cylinder with internal mechanisms to reduce the sound of firing by slowing the escaping propellant gas and can also slightly increase the speed of the bullet.[1][2] Can I legally own a Suppressor? Yes, while the process is not a fast one, you can legally own a suppressor. If you live in one of the 39 states in which you can legally own a suppressor, please exercise your rights and do so. I recommend doing the research and talking to your local gun stores, and figure out what will work best for you. Research is easily accessible on the Internet on the subject (Google suppressor and a variety of websites are dedicated to the subject), as Suppressors have become very popular in the last few years. Websites such as SilencerCo.com or Advanced Armaments website http://www.aaccanu.com have current laws and regulations on who and how to purchase, including the Federal laws associated with the purchase of these tools used with firearms. The first step in buying a suppressor is finding a gun shop that carries the brand that you like and is compatible with your rifle or pistol. When you find your local dealer, you begin the long process of purchasing your suppressor. Does a suppressor make my rifle silent? This is a myth that many believe to be true, that is perpetuated by movies. You can put a suppressor on your pistol or rifle, but it will never be silent. They do make specialized ammunition that is designed to be fired through a suppressor and it is much quieter, but still not silent. Suppressors are used by the military and law enforcement in order to lesson or deaden the sound coming from a firearm. It is difficult to pin point where the shooter of a suppressed rifle is, which can be a great benefit to a sniper trying to stay concealed and shoot his rifle. A Suppressor has the added benefit of reducing the muzzle flash (or fire that leaves the barrel) after you fire a weapon. This is a benefit for those who fire their firearms in ranges or close proximity to others. Using your suppressor on the range makes your experience that day a pleasant one. Not having to wear oversized ear protection or something uncomfortable but necessary in order to preserve your hearing is the greatest benefit. Using suppressors to teach young children to shoot making the day a much more enjoyable. Being able to talk and not yell at one another is a great instruction tool. Can law Enforcement come into my house at anytime if I own a suppressor? No the Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms agency or Law Enforcement agency in your area cannot enter your home simply for owning what is considered a class IV firearm, or suppressor. If you are using a suppressor on a range and you attract attention from either law enforcement or
curious onlookers, it is always wise to have your completed paperwork (tax stamp) with you. If I travel out of state with a suppressor do I have to inform the ATF? If you need to travel out of your home state for any reason with your suppressor, you do not need to inform the ATF. However, any other NFA (National Firearms Act Machine Gun, or Short Barreled Rifle SBR) registered firearm that is moved between states, form 5320.20 will have to be filled out and sent to the ATF. Can my local Law Enforcement deny my purchase of a NFA item or suppressor? Your local law enforcement agency does have a signature line on the Form 4 when filling out paperwork for an individual from the ATF. If your area is suppressor unfriendly, you can start what is called a gun trust. The benefit of having a gun trust is family members can use the suppressor, You can pass the item down in your will if the family member is able to own an NFA item, the process of purchasing a NFA item is stream lined for people who have a gun trust, and the time spent waiting has been reported to be significantly shorter with those filing for an NFA item when using a Gun Trust. I would recommend finding a lawyer in your area that has experience in creating a gun trust and getting the facts from the expert on that subject. It is best to do your research and speak to those who have gone through the process before undertaking the arduous task of a class IV purchase. It is your constitutional right to own firearms please do so! Education is the key to navigating the system of dealing with buying a suppressor. I am by no means an expert on the subject so please check your local laws and have a strong understanding of them to protect yourself.
