The holidays are in full swing! It’s the most wonderful time of the year, isn’t it? Christmas is my favorite holiday. It’s not just about the presents or the cookies and desserts—although they are delicious and I love the once-a-year time to pig out on chess squares. For me, it’s about the time I get to spend with family, and I love encountering the holiday cheer of those who don’t have the bah-humbug state of mind. Oh, and I have to mention how much I absolutely love watching Christmas movies and seeing Christmas lights. I could watch “Christmas with the Kranks” and “The Santa Clause” over and over in the month of December. Luckily for me, ABC Family plays Christmas movies all month long. Enough talk about Christmas. Check out this issue’s Holiday Gift Buying Guide that we’ve put together with some of our advertisers holiday specials! I got started a little late on this, but plan to make it a yearly spread in the November and December issues, so we should have a lot more gift ideas for you next year. We are so excited to announce Nashville Bike Week 2017! YES, if you haven’t already heard, in September 2017 Loretta Lynn’s Ranch will be hosting Nashville Bike Week and we are proud to be a sponsor for this event. It’s a 10 day rally with 10 headlining bands, over 4 stages of entertainment, bike shows and games, zip lining, poker runs, stunt shows, bike and food vendors, camping on site, daily rides throughout the TN area, AND over $200,000 in giveaways to ticket holders! It’s going to be a rally you don’t want to miss and we love the idea of having our own 10 day bike rally in Nashville!! Check out their ad in this issue for a limited time offer on your 10 day pass and see their website NashvilleBikeWeek.com for all the details. We are looking at a BUSY 2016 with the Tennessee Thunder Run Ride n’ Win Contest kicking off in April! We now have a sponsor and have ordered the Ride cards, so be on the lookout for more info to come on our Facebook page and in the January issue. From now until April 1st we will be setting up registration and ride stops and we are looking for a couple of dependable, responsible sales reps in the Knoxville and Chattanooga area. If you think you have what it takes to be a part of Team Thunder and would like to earn some extra cash having fun then give Scott a call at 615-389-1149. If this issue is missing anything, I apologize… we lost a dear family member this week as we were in the middle of putting the magazine together. Scott’s stepfather passed away un-expectantly and has left his mom and our whole family with all the heartache and pain that you can expect when you lose someone that meant so much to you. Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers… thank you. From all of us at Thunder Roads Magazine of Tennessee… Merry Christmas and Warm Wishes for a wonderful Holiday Season and a very Happy New Year! Ride Hard Live Free, Denise, Scott & Thunder Dawg

“Better or Whole” Mark 8:22-25 “Jesus came to Bethsaida; and they brought a blind man for Jesus to heal. Jesus took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the city.” Bethsaida was a seaport for hardcore fishermen, a “sin city” like Bourbon St. Jesus took him out of that city, not because Jesus couldn’t heal him in that city, Jesus is God over all the earth. Sometimes our condition is fed by our environment. If our environment doesn’t change, neither will our Outlook. Most of the members in my Church are a lot like myself, we don’t come from a “Leave it to Beaver” home life style. We didn’t get the car for our 16th birthday, we didn’t get the designer clothes, most of us were raised by a single mom, but we had plenty of uncles around to abuse us, but we still made it. We’re here and we might be a little crazy, but we made it. We may have a tear in our eye, but we still made it! That old environment is our “Bethsaida” and because it affects our outlook, Jesus has to “take us by the hand and lead us out of our Bethsaida” before He will restore our sight. “Jesus spit on the blind man’s eyes and asked him a question “What do you see?” Jesus didn’t ask this question just to find out what the depth of his healing was, Jesus is God, He already knew his status. Jesus wanted to challenge the man’s perception. The blind man remarked, “I see men as trees walking.” His eyesight was Better but not whole and this is where a lot of Christians are today. Once we get saved, (Jesus took us by the hand, led us out of our Bethsaida) we are Better than we were, but we’re still not Whole. We’re saved but sick, saved but addicted, saved but broke, busted and disgusted. I know that Jesus healed other blind men with the first touch, but the other blind men were not from Bethsaida. Sometimes our past can blind us to the things of God and we settle for Better and not God’s Best. Religion teaches us that we should be grateful for Better and settle for it. “Jesus put His hands on him AGAIN, and he was completely restored.” December 2015
Is your past, your Bethsaida that is keeping you from being whole? You may think that you don’t deserve to be whole and if so, all you may need is another “touch from God.” God didn’t bring you out of that mess just to leave a mess in you. Have you settled for Better when you can be whole? Let’s look at the “Process” of his healing. 1st Jesus took him by the hand, 2nd Jesus led him out of his Bethsaida, 3rd, Jesus spit on his eyes, 4th, Jesus laid hands on him. The Test is, will you settle for Better, or will you be whole? Once you’ve been saved, you’re Better, but will you grow up spiritually and be whole? Jesus sent him away with these instructions, “Neither go BACK into the city, nor tell to any in the city.” Never go back to your Bethsaida, nor speak to anyone from there. You’re not strong enough yet. You must cut off all ties with every one you knew in your Bethsaida if you want that 2nd touch from God. It is always your choice, will you settle for Better, or will you push to be whole? Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

History of Motorcycles
T
Part 10
he 1960’s brought us what was probably the flashiest, most forward customization movement in motorcycle history…a movement that continues to this day. It introduced us to some amazing names in the industry that will surely never cease to amaze, be you a motorcycle fanatic or not. But while the 60’s were all about flare, the 70’s brought us some major changes, as well as some significant names out of Japan that would latch on to American motorcycle culture and ride on into the present as standard household names. By 1970 there are approximately 2.8 million motorcycles registered in the United States, so who wouldn’t want to try and get a piece of the American pie? First let’s touch on what Harley-Davidson is doing during the decade at hand. H-D Motorcycles was still under the reign of AMF at the time, but that doesn’t mean that they were stagnant. To kick off the 70’s Harley introduced the XR750 for Class C racing…a Sportster based motorcycle which they continued to update and improve upon throughout the duration of the decade. 1971 was the first year for the FX1200 SuperGlide – a combination of a Sporty front end and the frame and power train of the FL series. The SuperGlide opened the door for an entirely new class of motorcycle…the Cruiser. In 1977, H-D makes a very public debut of its FXS Low Rider in Daytona Beach, and later the same year releases Willie G. Davidson’s dynamic version of the Sportster, the café racer. Willie’s bike was only in production for two short
8
years and was deemed “a sales flop” due to its lethargic performance, but eventually became a collector’s item. The FXEF Fat Bob bounces onto the scene in ’79…appropriately named for its dual gas tanks and bobbed fenders. So while Harley was certainly not the motorcycle company making leaps and bounds at this time, they certainly didn’t stop growing their ever blooming family tree. Perhaps the biggest change in American motorcycle history in the United States that occurred was the addition of so many Japanese bikes to the mix. While many manufacturers both large and small took their shot at both the racing scene and general riding population, we will keep our focus on the four major Japanese manufacturers who jumped in to American culture with both feet…. and managed to find and KEEP their place in American motorcycle history. First and foremost to enter and succeed in the United States is Honda. Honda entered the US motorcycle world like a bat out of hell….and just kept on flying. As with many Japanese motorcycle companies, Honda offered models that were superior examples of well-crafted machines. They were very popular in the racing world, and for good reason. The Honda “70” was one of the world’s first small 4 stroke, small capacity motorcycles with an engine displacement of only 72 cc. It sported a triangular speedometer and a maximum calibration of 60 mph…Honda constantly upgraded and modified this model. In addition to the “70”, Honda
ThunderRoadsTennessee.com
December 2015
introduced America to the CL100, and the XL250. When it appeared, the XL250 was the first modern 4 stroke enduro motorcycle, as well as the first mass produced 4 valve model. It was deemed an “enduro” because of its dual purpose…it shared many characteristics of a dirt bike, but at the same time was street legal, and intended for both on and off road use. An interesting aspect of the bike was its narrow streamlining…they were only 12” at their widest point (excluding the handlebars). The CBX was released during the 70’s as well, and was classified as a Superbike. The late 70’s Honda brought its CX series to the table…a monumental accomplishment, considering these models boasted liquid cooling, electronic ignitions, and dual CV type carburetors. But of all the models Honda introduced us to (and yes, there are more) the last model I will mention is a very familiar name. Honda’s touring motorcycle premiered in 1974….the Goldwing. It was introduced at the Cologne Motorcycle Show that October, and proceeded to make itself at home around the world. Over the course of its history, the Goldwing has had numerous changes and upgrades, with most of its sales being made in the United States. Next in line to try their hand in America was Kawasaki. These guys were hot on the tails of Honda, and all in when it came to competition. During the 1970’s Kawasaki introduced Americans to several noteworthy models. The S1 Mach1 was a direct result of their previous model (the H1 MachIII 500 cc) and was in every aspect a 3 cylinder 2 stroke upgrade. They also produced the Mach1’s big brother for a short two years…a larger version of the Mach1 with a displacement of 346 cc. Kawasaki also produced the Z1 in response to Honda’s CB750…the Z1 helped to popularize the in-line, crossframe four cylinder, which would become well known as the “Universal Japanese Motorcycle”. This model was also noted for combining numerous elements previously available on other motorcycles into a single bike, and at the time was the most powerful Japanese 4 cylinder 4 stroke ever marketed…factory direct it had a maximum speed of 130 mph. Not too shabby if I say so myself. Kawasaki continued to upgrade models and added water cooling and shaft drives in the 70’s, always maintaining December 2015
advanced, and above all, FAST motorcycles. Suzuki and Yamaha joined the Japanese quest for American domination in the 70’s as well. While Yamaha models were somewhat scarcer than that of Honda and Kawasaki, they did have some pretty cool selling points of their own. The engines were air cooled, parallel twins that were even offered in a six speed version in some markets. Another interesting aspect of Yamaha bikes was that all models came equipped with “Autolube” automatic oil injection, relieving the user from the need to mix gasoline and two-stroke oil. One noteworthy point about these bikes…they were far different from Honda’s approach with the dual purpose enduros… Yamaha models varied immensely between street bikes and racing motorcycles. In fact, the frames alone on street models like the RD350 were often upwards of twice the weight of racing model frames. Suzuki brought us an initial lineup consisting of the GT380 (the Sebring), GT550 (the Indy), and the GT750 (the LeMans). These bikes offered piston-ported two stroke engines featuring Crankcase Cylinder Injection (PosiForce)…essentially a multi-point oil injection system. The 380 and 550 engines were air cooled and marketed as “Ram Air” by Suzuki. The 750 differed from the previous models in that it was liquid cooled and was nicknamed “the water buffalo” in the US, and also featured dual disc brakes up front (another big “first” for Suzuki). So apparently the Japanese need to be thanked for more than Geishas and sushi…who knew they would create such a surge in competition in the motorcycle industry. Japanese manufacturers pushed the industry and encouraged American manufacturers to step up and polish their chrome if you will. So, I will be the first to say it….thank you Japan, for kicking our ass...We certainly needed someone to light a fire under our somewhat dormant carcasses and regroup. The 1980’s brought us shoulder pads and highly flammable hair-dos…but it also brought us some pretty cool modernizations to our cherished two-wheeled cohorts. Next time we will check out what this decade brought to the table… besides the Rubiks cube. Melanie Schwarte, Thunder Roads® Magazine Iowa

Some people are perfectly happy never touching their bike with a wrench. Some people really want to learn to do a few little things but don’t know where to start. This month, we are going to give some tips for those of you that don’t work on your own motorcycle, but may want to start doing minor maintenance, maybe just do more in depth checks, or bolt on parts, or just have a better understanding of how things work for your own peace of mind. It’s much more convenient to drop your bike off at the shop, and pick it up fixed, but there is a certain satisfaction in doing it yourself. Not everyone wants to be their own mechanic, and not everyone has the time. Some people have no desire to ever see the inside of an engine, or transmission, but even if you are just curious what’s happening in there, hopefully this will help. First, if there is one available for your bike, go to your dealer and pick up a service manual. It’s about the size of the phone book back when people had phones in their homes, and in it you will find everything from simple maintenance checks and schedules, to complete tear down and rebuild instructions. It list everything that should be done to a motorcycle at the scheduled service checks such as fluid changes and re-torqueing specific bolts, and everything that is checked, and even if you have no desire to do it yourself, you can at least refer to it to see everything your servicing dealer or independent shop is doing when you take your bike in for repair, or a 10,000 mile service. The second thing is a parts manual for your specific bike if it’s available. The parts book will have an exploded view of almost every stock part on your bike. Again, even if you have no desire to do your own repairs, it will help you understand how things work, and the relationship each part has with the next one. If you want to start doing light maintenance, or more in-depth checks, you will need a good set of basic hand tools and a few specialty tools. The handiest specialty tools are torque wrenches. A torque wrench tells you how far you have stretched a bolt, or more simply, how tight it is. Torque wrenches December 2015
come in many varieties, the most common are beam type, and clicker, although programmable electronic wrenches are getting cheaper and more popular. Clicker types are the easiest to use, you pre-set a gauge on the wrench to the torque listed in the service manual, and when the torque is reached, you can both hear and feel it. There are other tools you could need, depending on how far you want to go, an oil filter wrench, a belt tension gauge, and an axle wrench. A bike jack, or lift can make life easier when you are working on your bike also, a jack will stand the bike level and lift it up some so you can sit on a stool instead of on the ground, and a lift will lift the bike up so that you can stand and work on it. With the manual, hand tools and a couple of specialty tools, you are ready to do your own basic maintenance, or check out your bike a little more thoroughly than you do now. There is also a series of videos you can buy that walk you through many of the things you may want to do. They are available as download for computers too. The best advice I could give someone that wants to learn to do a few things to their bike is, find a friend who does their own maintenance and will show you the ropes. Go watch, or maybe help a little, then when you are ready, buy him a couple of beers and invite him to come make sure you do it right, but save the beer for when you are finished. I’m not a mechanic, nor did I stay at any hotel that makes me smarter than anyone else. These are just suggestions and tips sent in by readers, or answers to questions we have received. If you disagree with any of these tips, don’t use them. We are not responsible for your desire to learn more about your motorcycle and spend countless hours in the garage or shed working on it.

Standing Beef Prime Roast; no Ribs Palmful of Thyme Palmful of Basil Palmful of Parsley
Mix all 3 in a small dish Take a jar of Dijon Mustard and rub it all over the Prime thoroughly. Now rub the 3 mix all over thoroughly and salt & pepper to taste. Roast in a pre-heated 500 degree oven. Place in a large roasting pan or one of the disposable heavy-duty foil pans. Roast apprx. 15 mins. until Prime is brown all over. Reduce oven temp to 350 degrees. Roast until a meat thermometer registers 110F for rare or 115F for medium-rare. Remember; the Prime wil continue to cook and the internal temp. will rise to the proper temp as it rests for 10 minutes, so do not overcook it. Remove Prime to a platter and just cover it with foil; don’t wrap or tuck it in. Pour a can of Beef Broth into your roasting pan and scrape the bottom for all the goody tidbits. Stir thoroughly until all combined. Strain through a mesh strainer and place in a gravy boat or glass bowl. If any fat rises to the top just skim off and throw away. For the Horseradish Cream Sauce: 3/4 cup of Heavy Cream, 1/4 cup of bottled Horseradish and 2 Tbls. Coarse Grain Mustard. Whip this all together until stiff. You can make this way ahead and just refrigerate and rewhip before serving. Slice up your Prime Rib in generous 1-1/2 pieces and pour the Au Jus all over nice and hot and place a big dollop of the Horseradish Cream in the middle of the Prime slice. Oh, baby....this hits you exactly in the right place. Perfection!

Put pieces of biscuits into a bundt cake pan and pour melted butter & brown sugar all over top. Smoosh down any pieces into mixture that are sticking up. Put an oversized plate over top of cake pan and invert very fast and flip that baby and remove the pan and all those juices just flow all over the place. Just take your hands and pull from the cake and either put high quality vanilla ice cream over top or homemade whip cream. Hello!! Totally Audacious!
WHISKEY PEAR PUNCH
2 Ounces of Jack Daniel’s Whiskey 1/2 Ounce of Orange Liquer 2 Ounces of Pear Juice 1 Dash of Bitters 1/2 tsp. Nutmeg (dry spice is fine) Optional * Orange peel for garnish If you’re making for a large group, place all in a gallon glass punch bowl and just do the math to equal out to the number of guests you have. Since you won’t be able to shake each one individually, use a whisk and just gently whisk. Cut orange peel DO rim each champagne glass and then put a shaker of Nutmeg out so everyone can sprinkle on top. These are phenomenal ice-cold but also really good served warm for Tailgating or any get-together. Cheers!

15TH ANNUAL EAGLE TOY RUN
T
by Thunder Roads Tennessee
he 15th annual Eagle Toy Run was held on November 7th, and was hosted by Appleton Harley-Davidson, and Operation Homefront. The Eagle Toy Run is the largest Military Toy Run, and all toys collected go to Fort Campbell’s Holiday House. Holiday House is a place for Military Families who find themselves in need during the holiday season and may find giving Christmas Gifts to their children difficult, and allows them to “shop” for one toy and one book per child, some stocking stuffers, and one game for the Family. There were over 150 bikes lined up at The Smokehaus in Fort Campbell KY ready to head out to Appleton H-D. They collected a lot of toys, and even more money for the cause, but that was just the start of the day. When we arrived at Appleton, country artist Rodney Watts was already keeping the crowd entertained, he is an Army veteran himself and has opened for many artist like Gary Allen and Kenny Chesney. Later that afternoon the Tattoo contest started, the judges for the contest were Jason and Heather from Infinite Ink. Appleton’s own Brett Appleton, and 2015 Best of Clarksville Tattoo Artist, Dizzy from Love Blood Ink Tattoo, which was also recently voted 2015 Best of Clarksville Tattoo Studio. There were a lot of entries for the contest, and in the end the winners were Robert Peterson in 3rd place, Kuinilani Roberts in 2nd with a very intricate Samoan Tattoo, but it was Mike Noirot who walked away with the $100 gift card grand prize with his Gadsden Flag Tattoo. Shortly after the Tattoo contest, local radio station Z97.5 held their Double Tap Tactical Rock Girl Finale. It was the last of the 3 round contest to pick their 2016 Rock girl, it was a tough decision but in the end Nicolette was picked and will be the new Z97.5 Rock Girl. But the day was about collecting toys and that’s what they did, lots of toys, and lots of money for a great cause.

Congratulations to Harley, 2015’s American Hero Dog! Harley spent 10 years living in a small cage in a puppy mill before he was rescued and found a loving home. His journey of physical and emotional healing inspired a campaign called “Harley to the Rescue” which has raised the funds to save (and provide medical care for) more than 500 dogs from puppy mills over the past two years. Harley personally goes on these rescue missions; and there is no doubt that Harley is keenly aware of what is happening! There is something indescribable in the way he communicates with the sad and scared dogs. As a spokes-dog against puppy mills, Harley has educated thousands of people, of all ages, about the horrors of the commercial dog breeding industry. Harley makes public appearances at events and schools where he gladly accepts love and attention from everyone. Harley’s grizzled appearance is a testament to the care and nurturing that he had never received. He had issues: a diseased heart, a mouth filled with rot, a fused spine, a broken tail, gnarled toes, and legs that were deformed. And then there is the missing eye – the result of his cage being power-washed with him in it (an all too common practice in puppy mills). All of these conditions were the result of years of horrendous neglect and abuse. Harley is a voice for the thousands of breeding dogs still living in puppy mills, and by winning the “Emerging Hero” award it will draw attention to help further his mission. To read all about the other 2015 extraordinary finalists, visit http://www.herodogawards.org and to help make a difference, visit American Humane Association at www.americanhumane.org today.

Bullet Points INDOOR GUN RANGE ETIQUETTE Winter is here, and if you’ve been shooting outside at a controlled range, or at a safe place in the woods, you might want to go to an indoor range like the Bob Munden Indoor Range at Tennessee Gun Country to practice during the cold months. This month we’ll go over the basic rules that apply to most indoor ranges. Where ever you go to shoot, always know the rules specific to your range and abide by them. The rules are there to keep everyone safe and make range time fun for all. These are basic general safety rules that apply at most indoor ranges but if you’ve been shooting in the woods all summer, it’s a good idea to review. Always keep your firearm pointed down range, even if it’s empty; if you bring your gun in a bag or case, turn the bag or case so that when you take the firearm out it’s pointing downrange. If you rent a firearm, make sure the slide is locked back or the cylinder open when you return it to the counter so everyone can see at a glance that it’s unloaded and safe. Never leave your gun unattended. Always keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot. These seem basic, but you may have developed bad habits if you haven’t been shooting inside or around other people. Keep your firearm unloaded until you are ready to shoot, and wear eye and ear protection anytime you are in the range facility. Keep your firearms unloaded and in a closed container or holster when entering or exiting the range facility. Never load or handle your firearm if you aren’t in your shooting lane. Shoot in your assigned lane and only shoot at the target in your lane. When you put your target on the hanger, hang it at eye level so you aren’t shooting up or down. Do not reach past the firing line for any reason. If you drop your target or brass or anything at all, ask the range staff for help. Never hand a loaded firearm to another person. Clear the gun, make it safe and set it on the counter to let the other person pick it up, load it, and begin shooting. Always check the policy at your range before shooting shotguns or rifles. Some allow rifles up to a certain caliber, and some allow shotguns with ammunition restrictions. Most
18
ranges also have ammunition restrictions for all guns, steel core/ green tip, incendiary, tracer, or armor piercing ammunition are usually not allowed. Most indoor ranges do not allow muzzleloader rifles of any kind. Never bring food, drinks or tobacco of ANY kind on the range. This will lessen the chance of ingesting lead residue. Always wash your hands immediately after shooting to remove any lead dust or primer residue. Leave your booth clean and uncluttered, and sweep up all of your brass and dump it into the bucket for spent brass. When leaving the range area for any reason, unload your firearm at the shooting position and case it. The call “CEASE FIRE” means to stop shooting immediately. Any shooter can call “CEASE FIRE” if they witness an unsafe act or there is a problem requiring all shooters to stop firing. Never allow unattended children on the range. Children must be supervised by an adult at all times. If you are unable to clear a malfunction, leave the firearm in the booth and notify the range personnel. Never fire from the prone position. The angle will have you shooting at the baffles on the ceiling. Some ranges allow full auto firing with prior permission. As stated earlier, these are general rules, and each range has its own specific rules. Make sure you learn them before you enter the range. It makes shooting a safer and more enjoyable experience for all involved.

Bike of the Month
2011 Custom Indian Bobber Congratulations to Rusty Parker on winning our monthly Bike Contest on Facebook! While vacationing in Panama City Beach, FL during Thunder on the Beach Fall Bike Rally in 2013 my wife and I went to the PCB Harley dealer and was just looking at new Street Glides. I have never outgrown my passion for choppers and bobber style bikes. They had an Iron Horse chopper and this custom built Indian Bobber and they both caught our eyes. We were not in the market for another bike, but when I fired the Indian Bobber up I was hooked. I rode it a few miles and wound up buying it. I met the builder and he gave me a list of everything he had done to it. It has a 113 c.i. Ultima Performance engine with around 135 horsepower and torque. It is running a 3” open primary belt RSD 6 speed transmission and is absolutely a blast to ride. The Big Growl Long Gun Pipes sound great. He also mounted a 3 gallon Indian Larry gas tank to set it off with a springer front end and tons of chrome. I have added my touch to it changing out a few things. Boswell’s 17th Annual Toy Run On Saturday, November 7th, Boswell’s Harley and its H.O.G. Chapters held the annual toy run, to benefit the Metro Police Charities’ programs. Over 650 bikes joined the parade, from Centennial Park, down West End Avenue, and on to the dealership, on Fesslers Lane. In addition to the toys collected, the bikers contributed about $6,500 in cash. This parade receives wide support from the area, including H.O.G.’s, Pastor Ron and his Covenant Confirmers MC, Pokey and the Shelby Avenue Faith Riders, Revolution MC, and quite a few patchholders from various Confederated Clubs. Bubba Boswell expressed his thanks for those who made the event a great success. Adding a little excitement to this year’s parade, the route had to be changed, after a 30 minute delay. A report of a bomb, on the nearby portion of West End, caused a hurried shift in route, with the necessity to move of escorting officers. We didn’t hear a loud “boom”, so I guess it was a false alarm.
22
Steve Welch and Stacie Ludford acted as stand-ins for the jolly old elf and Mrs. Claus, attracting little (and, sometimes, not so little) boys and girls seeking to get on Santa’s good side. John Adams brought his bike-pulled sleigh, complete with passengers. With these, along with the decorated bikes, the parade provided early cheer to the large crowds gathering on the route, especially on West End. When the parade reached the dealership, Ray Eli and his crew served up burgers and brats. Adult beverages were also available. Timbuk2 provided the live music, for the fourth year in a row. A lot of the riders moseyed on down to the Music City Smokehouse, overwhelming the café with food orders. I’ll bet they’ll be better prepared next year! The money raised will be added to the other amounts raised by Boswell’s and the H.O.G.’s for the Metro Police Charities. The major beneficiaries are the Christmas Basket Program and the FOP Camp. Normally, the annual contribution, from
ThunderRoadsTennessee.com
December 2015
their efforts, exceeds $30,000. The Christmas Basket Program provides food and toys to families and some older individuals on Christmas Eve morning. The recipients are recommended by officers, from their precincts. They can receive no other Christmas aid and can receive the food baskets one year. H.O.G.’s help the officers deliver the baskets, seeing what their efforts provide. The FOP Camp provides a camp experience to good kids, who otherwise can’t afford to attend a camp. The officers select the deserving kids and serve as counselors. Only on the last day of camp, do the officers show up in their uniforms. The officers find that they have developed special friends, of these campers, in the neighborhoods and housing projects where they serve. Bikers are always generous in their support of kids. Maybe, just maybe, it’s because we are still just big kids at heart, with expensive toys! Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper

End of Year Thoughts As We Leave 2015 Behind.... * I think part of a best friend’s job should be to immediately clear your computer history if you die. * Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you’re wrong. * I totally take back all those times I put up a fight about taking a nap when I was younger. * There is great need for sarcasm emoji’s; the “finger”, the “mooning”, the “bite me”, the “suck this”......... * How the hell is anyone besides Martha Stewart supposed to know how to fold a damn fitted sheet? * Map Quest really needs to start their directions on prompt # 5. I’m pretty sure I know how to get out of my own neighborhood. Also.....an Avoid This Neighborhood prompt would be greatly appreciated. * Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the person actually died, right? * Why is it that bad decisions always make for really good stories? * You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you just know that you aren’t going to do anything productive for the rest of the day. * Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after Blue Ray? I don’t want to have to restart my collection...yet again. * I keep some people’s phone numbers in my phone just so I know not to answer when they call. * I totally disagree with Kay Jewelers. I would bet on any given Friday or Saturday night more kisses begin with Budweiser than Kay. * I have a very hard time deciphering that fine line between boredom and real hunger. * How many times is it appropriate to say “What?” before you just nod and smile because you still didn’t hear, understand or really give a damn, about a word they said? * I love the sense of camaraderie when an entire line of cars team up to prevent a jerk from cutting in at the front. Stay strong, brothers and sisters....unite! * Shirts get dirty. Underwear gets stank. Jeans? Jeans seldom get dirty, and you can wear them all week. * Even under ideal conditions people have trouble locating their car keys in a pocket or finding their cell phone, but I’d bet everyone can find and push the snooze button from 2 feet away, in about 1.7 seconds, eyes closed, first time, every time! * Why is it the older you get, the more the movie “The Borrowers”, about how little gremlins take or move your “stuff” around, truly makes so much sense? * The first testicular guard, the “Cup,” was used in Hockey in 1874 and the first helmet was used in 1974. That means it only took 100 years for men to realize that their brain is also important to protect. 24
An old lady dies and goes to heaven. She’s chatting it up with St. Peter at the “Pearly Gates” when all of a sudden she hears the most awful, blood-curdling screams. Don’t worry about that,’ says St. Peter, ‘It’s only someone having the holes drilled into her shoulder blades for the wings.’ The old lady looks a little uncomfortable but carries on with the conversation. A few minutes later, there are more blood curdling screams. ‘Oh my,’ says the old lady, ‘now what’s happening?’’ Not to worry,’ says St. Peter, ‘She’s just having her head drilled to fit the halo.’ ‘I can’t do this,’ says the old lady, ‘I’m going to Hell.’ ‘You can’t go to that nasty place,’ says St. Peter. ‘You’ll be raped and taken advantage of.’ ‘Maybe so,’ says the old lady, ‘but I’ve already got the holes for that.’ ___________________________________________________ A man boarding a Christmas flight home to see his brother and Family was suddenly taken by surprise by what he knew was the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. He was ecstatic when she sat down next to him and as she settled in his eyes were glued to her. He asked quite calmly; “So, business or pleasure?”, to which she gently replied, ”Self-Improvement. I’m going to the Annual Nymphomaniac’s Convention in Boston. What’s your business at the Convention if you don’t mind me asking?”. Again, the gentle voiced beauty replied; “Well, I’ll be giving a lecture, based on personal experience to debunk many of the famous myths regarding sex”. For instance, myth has it that African-American men are the most endowed, when in fact it’s the American Indian that holds that record”. And, it’s legend that French men are the most sensuous lovers, when in fact it is men of Spanish descent. And last but not least, it’s been my personal experience on many, many occasions to discover that when it comes to stamina, you just can’t beat a good ole’ Southern Redneck. “So, having shared all that with you and I don’t even know your name”. Let’s get properly introduced. The man, without a moment’s hesitation replied, “My actual name is Tonto Gonzales, but all my friends just call me Bubba”. ___________________________________________________ “A Suit” was interviewing a young blonde for a position in his company. He wanted to find out something about her personality so he asked, “If you could have a conversation with any person, living or dead, who would that be?” The blonde quickly responded; “Oh, yeah, definitely the living one.”

Tracy Bettencourt
M
y name is Tracy Bettencourt. First, and foremost, I am mother of two wonderful girls. And, I am blind. I lost my eyesight nine years ago, due to an eye disease called retinitis pigmentosa. After suffering through bouts of depression, I realized that I needed to be a strong mother for my girls. The best way to do this was to be strong for myself. It started with physical fitness training to get myself in shape physically. I lifted weights, and worked out with a trainer. I began to eat healthier and continued to work out, toning my body to the point I was able to start competing in competitive body building, placing second and third in competitions in New York City and Nashville. None of the judges knew I was blind until after I completed my routine on stage, in front of thousands of people. I also realized I needed to strengthen my mind. I had always dreamed of teaching and entered undergrad school at Austin Peay State University, where I earned my bachelors in special education and received my teaching certification. While at APSU, my guide dog, Wilhelmina and I would be seen walking the campus, where she helped me get to each of my classes. Today, I am working on my graduate degree at Vanderbilt so I can become a teacher of students who are blind and visually impaired. I am scheduled to graduate in fall of 2016. In the spring of 2014, I learned that I had the skill to paint. I paint with my hands what I see in my mind’s eye. Painting to me has become a form of relaxation and provides me balance. I am very blessed to have touched so many lives through my paintings. My journey with motorcycles has been equally liberating. Having become close friends with the Appleton family, I learned of the release and freedom riding provides. Having lost my eyesight, my other senses have sharpened and I enjoy the smells and sounds while I am riding with my boyfriend, Mike Noirot. This year we have ridden nearly 10,000 miles together and each trip, whether it’s a ride on the Tail of the Dragon or a trip to the mountains of North Georgia, is a blessing. I am a member of HOG and the Ladies of Harley, Tuckessee Chapter. Riding truly provides me a sense of independence and freedom. I will continue to be active in riding and embrace every moment I am able to ride. It has been a long and humbling journey from where I was to where I am today. Life has thrown me quite a few curve balls, personally and professionally, yet I persevere and wake each morning with determination and newfound strength. Through the experience of losing my vision, I have faced adversity, heartache and many setbacks. And through this I have gained integrity, compassion and an understanding of life itself. Today, I wear many hats: mother, student, teacher, writer, significant other, artist, advocate, and fitness competitor. I may not have eyesight, but I do have insight and I always keep a humble heart.

Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: According to Wikipedia- in France, to buy a firearm you must first get a hunting license or a shooting sport license. All semi-automatic rifles with a capacity greater than 3 rounds, all handguns and all rifles chambered in ‘military’ calibers, including bolt action rifles, require permits. France also sets limits on the number of cartridges that can be kept at home (1000 rounds per gun). The total number of firearms owned by an individual is also subject to limits. With such great gun laws I’m puzzled as to how 7 people could possess explosives, automatic guns and a large amount of ammunition and use these to kill 130 innocent people and injure about 350 more. I’m sure the theater, restaurant and sport stadium were gun free zones. Why didn’t these terrorists know the laws and obey them? The people in the theater, restaurant and stadium understood and obeyed the law. To follow the logic of anti-gunners in America, France needs more gun laws to stop this violence. Apparently France needs a law that requires terrorists to obey the gun laws of France. They must work to ban all guns and ammunition, confiscate everyone’s guns and ammunition and teach politically correct logic in schools to stop children from pointing their fingers at each other. Gun dealers and gun manufacturers should be taxed at high rates and made liable for the actions of evil guns. As we know from the media and rhetoric and anti-gun politicians, all guns have minds of their own and commit murder without the permission of the person holding the gun. To paraphrase; get rid of guns and you will get rid of violent crime. I’m stunned that I haven’t seen any blitzes in the media or any calls by politicians for France to toughen gun laws!!! If this had happened in our country we would have been bombarded by anti-gun messages and calls for tougher gun laws. Why are tougher gun laws only a prescription for violence in America??? Maybe our politicians have inside information about where we as a
December 2015
country are headed. Maybe an armed public is a problem for the political class who has taken our national debt from 5.6 trillion dollars in 2000 to over 18 trillion dollars and climbing today!! Maybe they are concerned that less than half the population of the country has a legal job or that the gross national product of the country passed the national debt for the first time in 2014 and the gap is getting wider. When common people get in this shape they are labeled bad money managers and they begin to look at bankruptcy to start over. Certainly going farther in debt is not helpful or recommended. What will happen if interest rates on the national debt get raised or if the if the world decides to drop the dollar as the world standard for currency? They are talking about changing in case you didn’t know. Is the antigun war being waged so the American people won’t come looking for the politicians who spent our country into third world status ? How did government control of guns work out in France? How can a disarmed public protect itself. How do you shrink the military, leave enough arms and ammunition in the hands of citizens to protect themselves or the country when attacked and yet disarm the citizens to the point they can’t retaliate against an out of control and oppressive government? The smart person is equipped to protect themselves and prepares for the future. William Shakespeare started his play Hamlet with; “To be, or not to be, that is the question: Whether ‘tis Nobler in the mind to suffer The Slings and Arrows of outrageous Fortune, Or to take Arms against a Sea of troubles…! If only France had allowed its citizens to have arms against its sea of troubles maybe an armed citizen would have taken down a couple of terrorists and ended the carnage. Gun free zones = potential victims!! Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. Bulldog * My monthly column reflects my personal point of view and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Publishers of this magazine, but they, like me, acknowledge the sacrifices made for the privilege of Freedom of Speech, therefore, they gratefully let me rant. Thank you for reading my rants. Hope my opinions don’t offend anyone, but, we all should be grateful for the right to have free opinions.

NEWS BYTES
CONGRESS MOVES TO DE-FUND MOTORCYCLE-ONLY CHECKPOINTS On November 5, the U.S. House of Representatives approved their version of the federal Highway Bill which, like the Senate companion measure, contains provisions of importance to motorcyclists, most notably the ban on federal funding of motorcycle-only roadside checkpoints. In addition to curbing the controversial roadblocks, the House bill also authorizes a motorcycle crash prevention study; revives the federal Motorcycle Advisory Council; continues off-road trails funding; and makes highway safety grants more accessible. Approved by a bipartisan vote of 363-64, the Surface Transportation Reauthorization and Reform Act of 2015 (HR 3763) provides $325 billion in transportation funding over the next six years, corresponding to similar legislation passed by the U.S. Senate earlier this year. Unfortunately, the House highway bill does not include similar Senatorial language that would ban the U.S. DOT from lobbying local, state and federal governments on policy issues such as mandatory helmet laws, so it is important to contact your federal representatives to adopt such a compromise when the House and Senate convene a conference committee to iron out the details.
WACO INFO One hundred seventy-seven people were arrested and held on million dollar bonds following the melee in Waco, Texas in May that left nine bikers dead and nearly twenty wounded, and on November 10th prosecutors announced 106 felony indictments charging defendants with engaging in organized criminal activity. “The Waco Grand Jury indictments on 106 individuals for engaging in organized crime are not convictions,” explains David “Double D” Devereaux of the Motorcycle Profiling Project (www.MotorcycleProfilingProject.com), “The Grand Jury only determines whether the prosecutor has sufficient evidence to indict. The Grand Jury only hears from the prosecutor, no defense attorneys are allowed, and does not make a determination on guilt.” “Double D”, who is also a member of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists’ Legislative Task Force (NCOM-LTF), says that as examining trials have made clear, the basis of the prosecutor’s argument in many of these case relies solely on an individual’s association with a motorcycle club that had members accused of committing a crime on May 17th. “These indictments based solely on association, particularly the cases where the prosecutor admits that there is no evidence that the individual participated in any crime or violence, flies in the face of recent Federal Court precedent.” A U.S. District Court decision in Coles v. Carlini, 9/30/2015, relying on Supreme Court precedent, concluded that the government may not impose restrictions on an individual solely because of their membership in a MC, including a 1% club that the government labels as a gang or criminal organization. “The criminal activity of others does not justify 32
denying rights and privileges solely because of association with an unpopular organization,” according to Devereaux. “Although I agree with many that are concerned about the seemingly broken Waco criminal justice system, recent Fed decisions seem to say that the underlying assumptions of an indictment based solely on association are unconstitutional,” said Devereaux in a prepared document titled “Understanding the Waco Grand Jury Indictments.” “The decision by the Waco Grand Jury comes as no surprise to many considering the obviously over-broad arrests, excessive bail, and unsuccessful challenges to probable cause during examining trials,” he concludes, adding that an overly-broad indictment affords the prosecution the ability to offer plea deals, shield themselves against lawsuits, and pressure defendants to testify. IDAHO MOTORCYCLE CLUB WINS SETTLEMENT OVER CLUBHOUSE RAID Ten members of the Brother Speed MC, along with the club itself, will be splitting a $16,500 payment from the United States government, to settle their lawsuit over a 2013 raid on their Nampa clubhouse that yielded no charges. The club and its members sued numerous federal agents and the United States, saying their civil rights were violated when federal agents serving a search warrant broke down the door, set off flash-bang grenades, and sent dozens of heavily armed SWAT team members into the small home. The club members were detained for up to three hours while agents forcibly removed their personal property, including their clothing, and confiscated club memorabilia, according to the club’s attorney, Craig Durham. “These were regular guys minding their own business that night,” Durham told The Spokesman-Review newspaper. “They were not a threat, and there was no call for the use of terrifying, military-style tactics to serve a simple search warrant.” The government admitted no wrongdoing but agreed to the settlement, under which the club will receive $4,000, and the individual members will receive payments ranging from $500 to $2,500. “This was never about money,” said chapter president Daniel Bugli. “It was about standing up for our rights as citizens and members of this community. Law enforcement officers shouldn’t be able to run roughshod over people’s rights based on speculation and assumptions.” BIKERS’ LAWYER FILES CIVIL RIGHTS LAWSUIT AGAINST VEGAS POLICE A Nevada lawyer who represents motorcycle clubs has filed a federal civil rights, false arrest and negligence lawsuit against Las Vegas police after he was acquitted in March of a misdemeanor obstruction charge. Southern Nevada Confederation of Clubs (COC) attorney Stephen Stubbs alleges that a Las Vegas practice of harassing motorcycle club members led to his arrest in November 2013, and that being found not guilty by a local judge showed

the arrest was improper. Stubbs told the Associated Press (AP) that he was prevented from representing a member of the Bikers for Christ motorcycle ministry who was being questioned by police, and who is a plaintiff in a recent lawsuit seeking at least $75,000 in damages from the department. Stubbs is representing members of biker groups, including the Mongols, Vagos, Stray Cats and Bandidos in a federal civil rights complaint filed in June 2012 alleging harassment by Las Vegas and other area police. The lawsuit is pending in U.S. District Court in Las Vegas. It was filed a day after a meeting of Mongols national leaders in Boulder City was monitored by hundreds of local and state police and federal agents. 72 TYPES OF AMERICANS CONSIDERED “POTENTIAL TERRORISTS” Are you a conservative, a libertarian, a Christian or a gun owner? Support states’ rights? Belong to “The Patriot Movement”, or display a “Don’t Tread on Me” flag? Are you opposed to abortion, globalism, Communism, illegal immigration, the United Nations or the New World Order? Anti-establishment? Do you believe in conspiracy theories, or ever visit “extremist” websites? Are you a veteran? If you answered yes to any of those questions, or a vast array of others, you may be an “extremist” or a “potential terrorist” according to official U.S. government documents. At one time, the term “terrorist” was used very narrowly, explains the alternative website www.activistpost.com, but says now the Obama administration is removing all references to Islam from terror training materials, and instead the term “terrorist” is being applied to large groups of American citizens, which it delineates in an article on their website; “72 Types of Americans That Are Considered ‘Potential Terrorists’ In Official Government Documents,” by D.C. attorney Michael Snyder. The “list” covers much of our country’s demographics and most of its citizenry, but if you belong to a group of people that is now being considered as “potential terrorists” by the government, December 2015

MOTORCYCLE SAFETY FUND PROVIDES SIGN-LANGUAGE FOR DEAF RIDERS The National Motorcycle Safety Fund (NMSF), a 501(c)(3) charitable community organization created in 1980 to augment the work of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, has created a new grant program to help rider training sites cover the costs of hiring sign-language interpreters for deaf and hard of hearing students. MSF-recognized Rider Training Sites regularly receive requests to accommodate students with physical disabilities, so in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and state laws, the NMSF grants will help defray the cost of sign-language interpreters. There are many deaf and hard of hearing car drivers and motorcyclists on the road today. To compensate, drivers and motorcyclists typically employ risk-reduction strategies such as Search/Evaluate/Execute (SEE), maintain longer following distances, make better use of peripheral vision, and check their mirrors more frequently. CALIFORNIA DMV OFFERS “VETERAN” DESIGNATION ON DRIVER LICENSES Veterans in California can begin applying to receive the word “VETERAN” on their driver’s license or identification (ID) card starting November 12, 2015. In accordance with the legislative language contained within Assembly Bill 935, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires veterans to first obtain a Veteran Status Verification Form and to pay an additional one-time $5 designation fee to apply for the special Veteran designation.
