IRST OF ALL, Merry Christmas! I recognize that this is a time when many people, events and things are demanding your time, and you chose to open this issue in the midst of it all. We want you to know we appreciate that. Not just today, because it’s the holidays, but every day. Scott and I (and the amazing group of men and women who help us create the content for this magazine) do everything possible to bring you value with every issue. We want you to know that we consider how you will receive what we create. We know that not every issue or article will please every reader, but we try to offer as many different options as we have interests and contributors willing to help cover the things we all enjoy following. We work hard to make sure that this magazine is something you enjoy reading. If there’s something or someone you would like to see featured, feel free to let us know. This time of year we begin to really focus on what we are thankful for—the people and moments that make us truly grateful. We are extremely thankful for all of you, our readers. You inspire us to continue to do what we love. Your comments, e-mails and involvement in social media by liking photos and sharing our posts are what keep us motivated. So, thank you for being a part of the Thunder Roads Tennessee team and we hope you will continue to enjoy our magazine. I love Christmas time – the colder weather, the food, the parties, and most of all, the time spent with family. I was fortunate enough to grow up with both sets of grandparents, and I have many fond memories of celebrating the holidays with them. And now as my parents are getting older, continuing these traditions with our aging loved ones can be a challenge as the years go by, but the effort is worth the quality time shared together. Enjoy this season with your loved ones, and make sure to reflect on all the things that make you thankful. As Christmas is the season of giving, take the opportunity to give to those around you. Step out of your comfort zone and do something for someone who could use a hand. Help a coworker with something that isn’t your responsibility; offer help to someone struggling with an oversized package; pay someone’s bill at a restaurant; speak kindly to someone who’s being abrasive, etc. Merry Christmas and thank you for supporting us and our wonderful advertisers that also support us. We can’t do this without you. Stay tuned for big things in 2019! And if you need a last minute gift idea, give out a gift that will keep giving all year with our subscription. THE SPIRIT OF MAMMON Luke 16:13 “…you cannot serve God and Mammon.” For years I was taught that this word “Mammon” meant money, but after a deeper study, I have discovered that “Mammon” is the name of a demonic spirit that uses money as a tool against God’s people. Vs. 9 “And I say unto you, make to yourselves friends of the Mammon of unrighteousness; that when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations.” 1 Tim.6:10 “For the love of money is the root of all evil” the money itself is not evil, it’s the love we have for it. Let’s face it, to most people “the love of money” is the deciding factor in all of their decisions. We place money as our top priority! We will lie, steal, cheat, and even kill for it, we will marry for it, divorce over it, change jobs, change churches and move across the country for it. Which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. They followed the spirit of Mammon. Money is the least of God’s kingdom; “If he can’t be faithful in the least…who can trust you with the true riches.” The least being money and the true riches are healing, deliverance, peace, joy, and happiness. None of which money can buy. For a pastor to bring up the “Money Talk” is like a parent bringing up the “Sex Talk” to their children, but if we don’t teach it, they are going to pick up the “bathroom wall theology.” There has been so many prosperity messages by spiritual pimps that damaged the body of believers, but because the believers didn’t know the Word of God, they fell for it. Biblical prosperity is true as long as it follows the Word of God, “if you work the Word, the Word will work for you.” Matt.6:19-21 “lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal.” If you got to fight for Mammon’s money, then you got to fight to keep it. “But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and thieves do not break through nor steal.” God’s money never runs out! “For where your treasure is, there will be your heart also.” If you prefer the world’s way, you can have it, it’s your choice. December 2018
Mark 10:17-22 “The Rich Young Ruler” came to Jesus and ask; “Good master, what must I do that I may inherit eternal life?” Jesus said, “One thing thou lack, go thy way, sell whatsoever thou has, and give it to the poor, and thou shall have treasure in heaven, and take up thy cross, and follow me. And he was sad at that saying and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.” The spirit of Mammon had deceived him and his love of money was greater than his love for God. If you want to break the spirit of Mammon, then follow God’s Word in tithes, offerings, sacrificial offerings, and first fruits, and be empowered to prosper! Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

Abner – is a 3 year old male Lhasa mix, who weighs approximately 18lbs. He had a terrible life before being taken to Memphis Animal Services. When found, he was covered in fleas, was malnourished, and had grievous injuries to his eyes. To try to save his vision, our rescue spent much time and money providing great vet care. He’s a handsome dog with a very sweet disposition. His housebreaking is improving. He loves laps, car rides, and sleeping in the bed with his foster parents. He is also good around children. Abner is up to date on immunizations, neutered, and would make a wonderful addition to a family, couple, or single person. Both eyes are completely healed, and he loves nothing more than going for a walk on a leash. Abner is paper and crate trained. Gets along with all other dogs and people. He is a good leash walker.
Emily – is an 18 months old small female Dachshund mix and weighs 9.5 lbs. She loves lap cuddling and is a delight. She gets along with other dogs, not sure about kitties. She is generous with her kisses and wags but a bit more submissive than her sister. She would do better in a house with older kids, mostly because of her small size. She likes her crate and her sister Charlotte, they are besties! She is doing well with housebreaking in the temp foster home. So far not a single accident! She is fully vetted UTD and spayed. Gizmo – is a senior male Shih
Tzu. Gizmo was found in the middle of the street in Memphis. He is a little doll and is very sweet. He is such a happy little dog, housetrained and great with other dogs. Gizmo is heartworm negative and has been neutered and microchipped.
Angel – is a lovely 13 year
Lovito – is a 6 year old male
young special needs female Bichon who was owner surrendered to us. Her owner did not have time for her and had let a medical condition go way too long that she could not afford to treat. Angel is spayed and is heartworm negative. Since we got her she has had a dental and two teeth removed that had an invasive abscess in them; she had bladder stones removed and a fatty tumor removed. Everything was analyzed and biopsied and Angel has nothing malignant. She is a nice dog who gets along with kids and other dogs. She can go in and out of a doggie door. She is spayed. She gets inside a crate when she wants to. She also GRINS! She will remain on rx dogfood to prevent any further problems with stones. Angel is a fine companion dog for a bichon lover. Charlotte – is an 18 month old small female Dachshund mix and weighs 10.5 lbs. She is a lovebug! She loves lap cuddling and is very precious. She gets along with other dogs, not sure about kitties. She is generous with her kisses and wags. She would do better in a house with older kids, mostly because of her small size. She likes her crate and her sister Emily. She is doing well with housebreaking in the temp foster home and is fully vetted UTD and spayed. December 2018
Maltipoo and weighs 13 lbs. He has only one eye and was owner surrendered at MAS. He loves adults and children. Vito is happy and playful and very loving. He appears to be housetrained.
Monty – is a one year old male Wolfhound or possibly Airedale mix. He is a big puppy and weighs 60 lbs. Monty seems to like to try and play with other dogs and girls but is a bit timid with men. He is heartworm negative, neutered and microchipped. Monty would benefit from a home with possibly another well behaved dog he could interact with.

Bullet Points
FORCE MULTIPLICATION
G
OOD DAY, FELLOW BIKERS. As I sit down this morning to write my monthly installment of Bullet Points, it is less than a week away from Thanksgiving. Of all the national holidays, Thanksgiving is my favorite. It is a day when I can reflect on all of the things I am thankful for: my health, my gal, Tracy, my children, my grandchildren, my faith, my friends, my country, our military, the beautiful state I live in, the financial blessings which provide me a roof over our heads, a beautiful motorcycle to ride and the ability to travel the United States in the saddle of the aforementioned CVO Limited. I also love Thanksgiving because it is a time to gather with family and friends without all the stress of the major holiday one month away. I read an interesting statistic the other day. Over 16 million citizens have a concealed carry permit. Over ½ of these permit holders are women. I was a bit surprised that there were more women permit holders than men. But perhaps I shouldn’t have been. If you look at the overall population, there are slightly more women than men. I find it interesting that when I go to my local gun shop these days, there are a lot of women shopping for guns. It wasn’t always this way. When I first started building my gun collection, I very seldom saw the fairer sex in gun stores. There is a reason for this – force multiplication. Women are taking their personal defense seriously and they recognize that an attack will probably come from the opposite sex and that men are typically larger and stronger than they are. There are of course exceptions to this general rule.
FORCE MULTIPLICATION
The United States Department of Defense defines force multiplication as, “A capability that, when added to and employed by a combat force, significantly increases the combat potential of that force and thus enhances the probability of a successful mission accomplishment.” These same factors hold true for an individual in a self-defense scenario. I would define it a bit differently than the DoD: “the use of a tool to multiply force and successfully fend off an attack by a more capable, determined assailant.” A simple lever is a force multiplier as it can move a heavy object with less force than required without the lever. In self-defense, the force multiplier could
December 2018
be many different items: pepper spray, a personal defense taser, knife, baton or a pistol. What many women have come to recognize is that the pistol is the most effective of all these tools. It levels the playing field in most any scenario and gives her a fighting chance against a determined attacker. And of course, force multiplication is just as important for a man who takes the defense of himself, friends and family seriously. This whole concept is important to me, as we have been having a discussion with a close female family member who is in her 20s and considering getting her handgun carry permit. She lives on her own and is often alone when driving to and from work and school. But we are approaching this cautiously and we have agreed that she needs training, a pistol she is comfortable with and will have to practice a lot before she can start carrying. I encourage women who are concerned with their personal safety to consider a handgun. Seek out recommendations from knowledgeable people before you decide on which gun to purchase. Go to the gun range and rent as many as possible before you make a decision on which gun is best for you. Do not get caught up in the “larger is better caliber” debate. While I can easily handle my .357 SIG chambered pistols, and often carry .45ACP pistols, they are not for everyone. These heavy calibers produce a large blast when shooting and have a stout recoil. A well placed first shot, and the ability to quickly, and accurately, place follow up shots, is more important than the size and speed of the projectile. If you are more comfortable shooting a .380 semi-auto or a 9mm, that is what you should be carry. If you are not able to quickly clear a malfunction, a 38 special revolver may be your better choice as you can continue to pull the trigger without worrying about a failure-to-eject of failureto-feed making your pistol inoperable. Lastly, keep in mind the size of the handgun you are considering. Full sized models inherently absorb recoil better than small guns. But if you are of smaller stature, concealing a larger framed gun in a waist holster will be more difficult. Until next month, keep the shiny side up, and stay warm out there! Molon Labe, Mike Noirot

HITMAKERS AND HARLEYS
D
arryl Worley once again brought his Hitmakers and Harleys event to Bumpus H-D on October 16th. This is an up close and intimate gathering of Darryl and three other hit songwriters, with an audience set up in the dealership. This year Darryl had special guest John Rich, joined by Jason Tom & Angie Bumpus Mathews and Leslie Satcher. The proceeds from this event go to the Darryl Worley Foundation which supports the Darryl Worley Cancer Treatment Center at the Hardin Medical Center, plus many other mostly health related charities and individuals in the Hardin County and Savannah, TN area. Darryl also holds the annual Tennessee River Run and a Hitmakers and Harley event at Bumpus H-D of Jackson to raise money for his foundation. Tom and Angie Bumpus graciously put on the event in Murfreesboro. The artists rotated performing their songs. Darryl’s songs included his hits I Miss My Friend, and of course finished the evening with Have You Forgotten. John Rich sang such hits as Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy and the song he wrote for Jason Aldean, In a Hick Town. Jason Mathews performed his I Must Be Doing Something Right and Lonely Eyes and others. Leslie Satcher included Troubadour and Let It Be Me. It’s always great to hear the ones who wrote the songs perform them with the feelings they felt at the time. They also included the stories behind the song, often humorous and sometimes sad. This made for a fun filled evening. In addition to the music, adult beverages were served by the Bumpus staff and a delicious dinner with a Mardi Gras theme, complete with King Cake, gumbo and catfish, was served by Buster’s of Murfreesboro. A Silent Auction, which included Diamond Candles, autographed guitars, Jack Daniels products, written lyrics (signed by the songwriters), a New Orleans adventure, H-D jacket, and a Brighton leather purse brought in a total of $22,850. John Rich had donated three cases of his Redneck Riviera whisky, plus 6 individual bottles personally autographed to the buyer. This is always a fun affair. Tickets are limited, so be sure to let Angie know if you want to attend or just donate for next year’s event and thanks to the Bumpi for supporting this great cause. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper

INAUGURAL VETTE CITY MOTORCYCLE MUSIC FEST
A
By Scott High
lot of us have probably been to the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green KY, it’s right across the highway from the GM Factory where Corvettes are built. As many times as I’ve been there, I’ve never thought about a motorcycle rally being held there, but Larry Jobe did. When I first heard the idea of the Vette City Motorcycle Music Fest my thought was if it’s done right, it’s a great idea. What could be better, motorcycles and cool cars together, throw in some great music, great vendors, camping, and a great venue, what more can you ask for. I’ve never noticed it, but behind the Corvette Museum there is a natural amphitheater in a bowl with a stage

and it was perfect for the big crowds to hear the bands. Larry’s idea was for Corvette owners, Bikers, and Rock n Roll lovers to all come together at one place and have fun together. It worked, the whole thing started with a kickoff party at Harley-Davidson of Bowling Green Thursday night, with a concert featuring The Hootz, Kiss Kiss Bang, the always rockin’ Jasmine Cain, and The

Josephines. Friday things got underway at the Museum, music started at noon and went until almost midnight both Friday and Saturday. Friday’s music lineup featured Smith & Wesley, our good friends Geneva, Big Smo, Devon Allman & Duane Betts, Foghat, David Lee Murphy, and Gretchen Wilson finished off the night. Saturday bands were Otis, Louisiana Swamp Donky, Pat Travers, Georgia Satellites, Kentucky Headhunters, Lita Ford, and the headliner was Bret Michaels. On the upper lot there were tons of vendors, and even a kids area beyond that with inflatable bounce houses and slides. There were lots of things to do on your bike too, a poker runs, a burnout pit, dyno drags, a bike show, and biker games. Camping was at the other end of the complex. One of the coolest things was with the admission price to the rally you could tour the Corvette Museum. They have some very rare cars, and each model year is represented. A few years ago, a sinkhole opened up inside the museum and swallowed a few of the cars. I love walking around and seeing the old corvettes but we didn’t get a chance to go inside the museum so I haven’t seen the cars they got out of the sinkhole, but Cooper and Judy Chilton went in and got some great photos of them. Larry Jobe and his team put on one hell of a show, and if you like Motorcycles, Music, Corvettes, or any combination of the three, this is one you don’t want to miss next year!

MISSION FORCE PRESENTS
MUSIC, MOONSHINE AND MOTORCYCLE BUILD AND BIKE GIVEAWAY Designed by Yelawolf - Built by Harley-Davidson® of Cool Springs

By Scott High Photos By @ounzezilla
hortly after Molly Beaudin accepted the marketing position at Harley-Davidson of Cool Springs and moved here from Florida she ran into artist/entrepreneur Yelawolf at his Slumerican Flagship Store in Nashville. They started talking and soon after that Molly had an Idea. That’s how the 7 month long project began, she took her idea to Jamie Lima, GM/Owner of Harley-Davidson of Cool Springs to build a bike designed by Yelawolf and raffle it off for charity. The charity they chose is Mission Force, since 1996, Mission Force has helped service men and women across America successfully transition to civilian life so that they can truly come back home body, mind and soul. You can find out more about them at www. missionforce.org. Jamie Lima then assembled a team at H-D

Cool Springs for the build. So, with Jamie overseeing the project, Molly taking care of the marketing end, Parts Manager Jeremy Lima and Performance Parts Specialist Aaron Staudinger sourcing the parts, Service Mgr. Sam Andrews would free up time for Master Technician Mike Van Orden to build the motor and the bike, they met with Yelawolf to discuss the design and build. Yelawolf is old school, he owns several bikes and usually rides a really cool Softail but the H-D Cool Springs crew asked him to get out of his comfort zone for the design of this bike. They decided to start the build with a 2018 FXLR Low Rider. Once the base bike was decided Yelawolf laid out his vision for the build. The bike was then taken apart and parts were gathered and sent out for powder coat and paint. The motor and a few other parts were sent to Borotek Powder Coating in Murfreesboro and the tins were sent to one of Yelawolf’s longtime friends Smurph at Dirty Wizard Paintworx in Birmingham AL for paint, notice the

subtle Slumerican logo inside the fairing. The H-D Cool Springs parts team then sourced parts from their build partners, Kraus Motor Co. supplied the bars, risers and controls, Saddleman Seats supplied the seat, JD Customs and Fabrications created a new custom fairing for the project that is now available, and Fab28 Industries built a wicked 1 off custom exhaust. The low rider comes stock with a Milwaukee 8 107 but this wasn’t going to just be a cool looking bike, so the Screamin’ Eagle 114” M8 Big Bore Conversion went in. Mike Van Orden is an incredible engine builder and tuner, and he also beefed up the motor with a cam plate and oil pump, tappets and tappet cuffs, pushrods and tubes and a 475 gear driven cam, all from S&S Cycle, then he tuned the bike, and it’s a fire breather. Because the fairing was new the crew at HDCool Springs had to fab a bracket to install it. All of the parts came together and the bike was finished just a couple of hours before the big reveal during Yelawolf’s set at Tennessee Motorcycles and Music Revival at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch. After the Reveal, Wolf rode the bike on his annual Devil’s Pass Tour, a run where fans and friends can ride with him as he rides to 4 shows, this year’s shows were in Huntsville, Birmingham, Atlanta, and ended with Slumfest at the Marathon Music Works in Nashville. This beautiful bike is now on display at Harley-Davidson of Cool Springs, and it can be yours if you are the lucky winner. Tickets are $25 each, and the drawing will be at a huge party they are having at Harley-Davidson of Cool Springs on April 20, 2019. You can purchase raffle tickets online at www.missionforce.org/harley and in person at the Slumerican Flagship Store at 1314 Jo Johnston Ave. in Nashville until April 13, 2019. They are also available now and up until the time of the drawing on April 20th at Harley-Davidson of Cool Springs at 7128 South Springs Dr. Franklin Tenn. Oh, and pay attention to the name of the bike build, part of it may come up at the party for the drawing. You can see more about the build at Facebook- Harley-Davidson® of Cool Springs and Instagram @hdcoolsprings

SIMPLE, SUCCULENT, PERFECT, CHRISTMAS ROAST BEEF
1 Beef Roast, any cut, any size 2 Cloves of Garlic; peeled and sliced (optional) 1 Stick of Real Butter; softened Salt & Cracked Black Pepper to taste Let uncooked roast sit out on counter at room temperature for apprx. 45 mins. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Place roast in a pan that you have lightly sprayed w/ either canned olive oil or butter spray. Take roast and make slits, up to 10 or so, distributed evenly all over roast, and slide a slice of garlic into slit. Next, rub butter all over your entire roast; generously, and salt & pepper all over roast. Place roast in pan, fat side up. Place meat in oven and set timer for 1 hour. DO NOT OPEN DOOR at any time for any reason. When timer goes off, turn the oven off and again, Do Not Open Door. Decide what your serving time will be and exactly 45 minutes before your serving time, turn the oven back on at 375 degrees. Cook roast for 25 more minutes and turn oven off. Remove roast, wrap immediately in foil and let it just sit for 15 minutes. Remove foil and slice according to thickness you desire. If you follow this recipe to the letter, your roast beef will always be perfect. Juicy, flavorful and tender. Holiday bliss!
ROAST BEEF GRAVY:
Take your pan that you cooked roast in and put it right onto stove on medium. Do this immediately after pulling roast and wrapping in foil. Sprinkle apprx. 3 tablespoons of all-purpose flour generously all over the pan drippings. Start moving the mixture around and around pan immediately and mix in well with drippings until flour is thoroughly mixed in. Next, slowly add beef stock little by little and keep working into flour coated drippings. All total you’ll add apprx. a cup of beef stock. Salt & pepper to taste, add 1 large pat of butter and turn up heat, keep stirring constantly as gravy will start thickening up really fast when you turn up heat. As soon as it’s the desired thickness you want, turn off stove and pour gravy into a gravy boat. Delicious! Note* If you want to make sure there’s plenty of gravy to go around, simply double the amount of beef stock you add and also add a bottle of pre-made, quality beef gravy into your homemade gravy. A Christmas Roast Beef is a thing of beauty to behold on a big serving platter.

THE PERFECT PRESENT...A CINNAMON & SUGAR DUSTED LEMON-APPLE BUNDT CAKE W/ EXTRA DRIZZLED ORANGE ICING 1 Pkg. of Premium Lemon Cake Mix 3 Tbls. of Sugar or Splenda 3 Tbls. of Cinnamon 3 Tbls. of Orange Peel Seasoning 1/2 Cup of Orange Juice (no pulp) 1 Can of Your Favorite Apple Pie Filling Brand (I prefer Lucky Leaf, but it’s your choice) Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Take your Bundt cake pan and grease w/ spray butter. Mix your sugar, cinnamon and orange peel in a small bowl and roll your Bundt pan on its’ side as you sprinkle in your mixture. Be sure and coat all sides and bottom as good as possible. Make up another batch for when you remove from oven. Make your cake as instructed, but add in the 1/2 cup of orange juice and the whole can of sliced apples and blend gently, all together. Pour mix into Bundt cake pan and bake for 55 mins. Do the toothpick test and insert toothpick directly in center of cake and if it comes our clean, it’s done. Remove from oven and let cool 10 minutes while you whip up Orange Drizzle: In a medium bowl beat up 2 cups of powdered sugar and 4 Tbls. of orange juice. Beat up until you reach a “drizzle” consistency, not too stiff, not too runny. Invert your Bundt cake onto a beautiful serving cake platter and while it’s still hot, drizzle the icing all over it. Let it dry for say 30 seconds and then do a 2nd drizzling. This is phenomenal with premium quality homemade style pure vanilla ice-cream.
SANGRIA BY THE PITCHER....
Add diced apples, sliced oranges and lemons (cut in halves) to a large glass pitcher. Add a bottle of red wine, brandy and orange juice and stir it all up gently. Refrigerate for up to 4 hours. Serve over crushed ice. So easy to make and tryly so good!

BOSWELL’S H-D TOY PARADE
B
ubba Boswell lucked up with the weather for his 24th Annual Toy Parade. After a chilly start for registration, the weather warmed by the noon kickstands up. Approximately 1,000 bikes participated in the ride from First Tennessee Park (Nashville Sounds Stadium), down Broadway, and ending at the Boswell’s on Fesslers Lane. The November ride attracted large crowds of early partyers on Broadway as the bikes roared past. Santa’s helpers, with decorated Christmas stockings, took this opportunity to collect donations for the Metro Nashville Police Charities. When combined with the biker’s donations over $15,000 was raised. That total included a portion of the sales of Von Elrod’s Beer Garden and Sausage House, located next to the stadium, generously donated by the owners. In addition, many riders donated toys and purchased logo shirts from police representatives. Again this year, Steve Welch and Stacie Ludford represented Santa and Mrs. Claus. The kids and “older kids” took the opportunity for pictures with the duo. Flag bearers from HOG Chapters and military organizations and, of course, others with American flags, representing this great nation, rode near the front of the parade. Upon arriving at Boswell’s, the riders enjoyed music, food, and beverages, as well as conversation, with their fellow riders. As with most motorcycle events, this ride’s emphasis was on helping kids. The police charities include a camp on Old Hickory Lake where deserving boys and girls have the opportunity to attend camp, who otherwise could not afford to go to a camp. These kids enter a little out of control, but by the end of camp act like little ladies and gentlemen, thanks to the patience and influence of the officers/counselors. Some previous attendees, later, as children, ran up to officers in the field to make them aware of wrong doing in the area and as adults, became officers. These same kids are treated to shop-with-a-cop before Christmas. In addition, the charities sponsor the Christmas Basket Program, which delivers multiple baskets of food and toys to deserving families, nominated by officers in the area and also to some elderly residents. After all, bikers are still kids at heart! Boswell’s Cookeville location is having their Toy Run, as I write this article, on November 10th. Most biker events support local charities. Please watch Thunder Roads Magazine for events and participate and support those in need in your area. On a sadder note, Mike Fanning, a Boswell H-D employee and longtime biker, passed away suddenly on November 7, 10 days after his 69th birthday. Mike had recently completed his dream of riding Route 66. Please keep his family and his Boswell family in your thoughts and prayers. Ride Safe And Have Fun!! Cooper

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)
AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES SHOULD STOP HITTING MOTORCYCLES The safety of autonomous cars remains in question, as a self-driving Chrysler Pacifica hit a motorcyclist on October 19 in Mountain View, California, when the test driver took control of the car to avoid a vehicle that had suddenly moved into its lane. The manufacturer claims its technology, which can "see 360 degrees in every direction," could have avoided the incident if the car's software had remained in control, but reports from around the country indicate that self-driving cars are struggling to handle some driving tasks. Autonomous cars are hitting the road whether we like it or not, but the presumption that they will be safer than human drivers when it comes to avoiding accidents has so far proven less than promising. There have been at least three reported cases of an autonomous car crashing into a motorcycle. On July 27, 2016, a motorcyclist in Norway was seriously injured when she was rear-ended by a Tesla Model S with its Autopilot selfdriving system engaged. Additionally, on December 7, 2017, a California motorcyclist was hurt in a collision with a self-driving Chevy Bolt that had aborted a signaled lane change and was returning to its original lane while the rider was lane splitting past it, a maneuver that is legal in California. Another disturbing incident occurred when an autonomous Uber car struck and killed a woman who was walking her bicycle across the road at night. One would think that the car's radar and infrared scanners would detect such an object far better than the human eye could. Indeed, the car's onboard computer detected the obstruction in the road six seconds before impact. Unfortunately, it failed to identify what type of object she was until just 1.3 seconds before impact, at which point it was too late to avoid hitting her. Other factors, such as an inattentive human driver who was supposed to be monitoring the car's surroundings, also contributed to the fatal crash, but a computer that fails to identify a target for nearly five seconds should be quite disturbing to motorcyclists who may suffer from this fate as well. Adaptive Cruise Control is a radar guidance system that enables a car to change its speed relative to the vehicle in front of it based on traffic conditions. A study by RDW has determined that existing adaptive cruise control systems often do not do an adequate job of locking onto a motorcycle rather than a car. These systems seem to have difficulty detecting a motorcycle not riding in the center of its lane, which is a problem since riders tend to occupy either the left or right tire grooves of a lane. Another study by Dynamic Research shows similar results when it comes to forward collision warnings detecting motorcycles. Throughout the tests, forward collision warning systems failed to detect the motorcycle adequately in 40% of trials. Similarly, 37% of simulated crashes in this test occurred because the car's onboard detection systems didn't see the motorcycle, which is also the number one cause of motorcycle accidents with human drivers. 24
If autonomous driving systems are designed properly, developed with motorcyclists in mind rather than an afterthought, they could potentially deliver on their promise of making the roads safer for everyone. "They could be on the lookout for motorcycles and other road hazards in all directions at all times, something even the most attentive human driver can never do," according to RideApart.com. "The trick is to design such systems to work in this way as a core functionality. Autonomous vehicles must be able to search, evaluate, and execute the same way the Motorcycle Safety Foundation teaches all riders to." U.S. SENATE SEEKS FULL FUNDING FOR RECREATIONAL TRAILS The Recreational Trails Program (RTP) has aided trail construction and maintenance projects and programs nationwide since 1991. Created through landmark surface transportation legislation, RTP reflected Congressional belief that federal gas taxes paid on motor fuel used in motorized non-highway recreational activities should be used to benefit those paying the tax as well as other users of recreational trails. Tens of millions of hikers and bikers, equestrians and ATVers, snowmobilers and skiers, canoeists and others now enjoy better outdoor experiences because of this action. RTP’s accomplishments unite the efforts in every state of federal agencies, state and local governments, volunteers and recreation businesses. Now, a bipartisan effort promises to dramatically increase the benefits of RTP’s proven formula with the recent introduction of S.3604, the RTP Full Funding Act of 2018 to require a study to estimate the total amount of taxes collected on non-highway recreational fuel, improve reporting on expenditures from the RTP, and streamline RTP funding distribution to the states by reducing unnecessary paperwork. “Minnesota snowmobilers, hikers, ATV users, cyclists, and countless others who enjoy the outdoors rely on the Recreational Trails Program to explore our state’s natural wonders and support our local businesses,” said U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), one of the bill's sponsors. “This bipartisan legislation will help ensure states receive all of the resources they deserve to protect and improve these trails for generations to come.” According to the Coalition for Recreational Trails, over the last 27 years the RTP has funded more than 23,000 projects and has attracted hundreds of millions of dollars of matching support from other private and public sources for trails and facilitated healthy outdoor recreation, as well as badly needed economic activity in countless communities. However, conservative estimates suggest that the RTP currently receives only about one third of the total taxes paid annually by non-highway "recreationists." A study to determine the best available estimate of the total amount of non-highway recreational fuel taxes collected will help ensure that these federal taxes are appropriately returned to the states for RTP while helping provide the Congress with the information it needs as it considers future infrastructure legislation.

OHIO ENACTS DISTRACTED DRIVING LAW Since the early days of motorcycling, riders have rightfully complained that car drivers don’t see them. Frustrated and infuriated by the lack of respect on the road, Motorcycle Rights Organizations across the country began lobbying for and passing laws that added fines and penalties for inattentive drivers who cause accidents resulting in injury or death. So-called “R-O-W” laws to punish careless or distracted drivers who carelessly violate our Right-of-Way have cropped up in numerous states nationwide, with Oregon being the most recent state to enact such a law last June, spearheaded by the Oregon Confederation of Clubs. When “distracted driving” entered the national consciousness more than a decade ago, the problem was mainly people who made calls or sent texts from their cell phones. Innovations since then, such as car Wi-Fi and a host of new apps, have led to a boom in internet usage in vehicles that safety experts now say is contributing to a surge in highway deaths. After steady declines over the last four decades, highway fatalities have increased to the highest levels in years, and distracted driving has been cited as the main culprit. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) claims that distracted driving has led to the biggest spike in traffic deaths in 50 years! Now, distracted driving is about to become a costlier offense on Ohio roads, as effective October 29, 2018, new regulations and penalties went into effect pertaining to what constitutes "distracted driving." House Bill 95 broadens the description of driving distracted beyond using telecommunications or other hand-held electronic devices while driving. Officers now can cite drivers observed to be engaged in any "activity that is not necessary for the vehicle's operation and that impairs, or reasonably would be expected to impair, the driver's ability to drive safely," according to the legislation. The bill defines “distracted” as: - Using a handheld electronic wireless communications device - including phones, tablets and computers - except when it is on speakerphone or otherwise hands-free. - Any activity “that is not necessary to the operation of a vehicle” and could or does impair the driver. December 2018
Governor John Kasich signed the legislation July 30 to make distracted driving a secondary offense in the state. So, if you’re pulled over for speeding or another moving violation, and found to be driving while distracted, the new law enhances the fine by an additional $100 or completion of a distracted-driving safety course. A person can only be cited for “distracted driving” if the law enforcement officer witnesses the offense while the moving violation is occurring, according to the bill. Texting while driving has already been a secondary offense in Ohio since 2012, but HB95, which passed the legislature with bipartisan support, applies to distracted driving in all its forms, from putting on makeup to changing the radio station. Similar laws are already on the books in Connecticut, Maine, Washington state, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. NCOM CONVENTION IN ORLANDO - SAVE THE DATE! The 34th annual NCOM Convention will be held Mother’s Day weekend, May 10-12, 2019 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Orlando, Florida. The largest gathering of motorcycle rights activists in the world, the NCOM Convention attracts hundreds of concerned motorcyclists from across America to address topics of concern to all riders. All motorcyclists are welcomed and encouraged to participate in the many meetings, seminars and group discussions that focus on legislative efforts and litigation techniques to protect our riders’ rights and preserve Freedom of the Road. Special seminars will be held on Restoration of Rights, Leadership 101 and "Share the Road" Motorcycle Safety. Additional agenda items will cover legal and legislative issues, with Special Meetings for Veterans Affairs, Women in Motorcycling, Clean & Sober Roundtable and World of Sport Bikes, as well as the Christian Unity Conference and Confederation of Clubs Patch Holders Meeting. To pre-register for the 2019 NCOM Convention, contact the National Coalition of Motorcyclists at (800) ON-A-BIKE or visit www.ON-A-BIKE.com. December 2018

Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: What a year this has been. Hurricanes, elections, wildfires, hot weather, cold weather, a booming economy and those only scratch the surface. I am struck by how we see these things and their effect on us. It seems being able to envision an outcome before an event or situation takes place could be a necessary skill we all need to perfect. However, I’m amazed how many people seem to be oblivious to a foreseeable outcome and suffer as a result. Does this qualify as risk taking or a lack of caring about the future? Maybe some just don’t have the ability to look at what is happening and see how it could affect them or maybe they are just gullible enough to believe the self-serving propagandist media. We recently had two very different but powerful hurricanes. Both were well advertised with warnings to evacuate! So, why did so many people stay and try to weather out the storms? The hurricane that hit the Carolina’s dumped huge quantities of rain that flooded everything and several people lost their lives. Why not evacuate, make a pitcher of pinacoladas and watch the hurricane on TV? It certainly would have been safer than treading water or hoping someone sees you waiving your hands on the roof. A few weeks later we saw the hurricane that hit the Florida panhandle. A huge storm that was ignored by many and it turned into a monster that devastated almost everything in its path. What about the wildfires in California? Did all those people who died by fire buy those houses and not think about a forest fire? Why do people live in a house in a hurricane zone that is not strong enough to withstand a hurricane?
What about a house in the California hills that isn’t fire proof? Have they thought about the inevitable mud slides coming in the spring? What about the elections? We saw what Democrats are all about during the Obama presidency and the amazing turn around President Trump has brought for our country in just two years, yet many people, like moths to the flame, want to put the Marxists back in power. Name me one Marxist country that didn’t execute the opposition when the Marxists took power. Doesn’t anyone see that will happen here if they secure control and eliminate the right of individuals to protect themselves? Why does the LGBT community support Democrats who support Sharia Supremacists? Don’t they know their lifestyle is a death sentence in the world of Sharia? What about illegal immigration? The media doesn’t report the status of murders when they kill someone anymore but thousands of deaths in our country are at the hands of illegal immigrants every year. Why is the medical world puzzled over the return of serious diseases and new ones that have only been seen in foreign countries? Are they blind to the connection to unscreened illegals crossing into our country? We all need to take a serious look at where the train is heading and base our future in the United States Constitution. We need to stop the Marxist indoctrination in our schools and we need faith in God, not faith in government!!! Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. – Bulldog * My monthly column reflects my personal point of view and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Publishers of this magazine, but they, like me, acknowledge the sacrifices made for the privilege of Freedom of Speech, therefore, they gratefully let me rant. Out driving around town and waved to my Ex today. Next time I might use all my fingers. -------------------------------------------------------------‘Panhead’ was having a really bad day. He tried to button his shirt and the button fell off. He went to open the door and the doorknob fell off. We jumped on his bike, grabbed his ape-hangers and they just fell off. Panhead is now very concerned about taking a piss. -------------------------------------------------------------First-year students at the Purdue Vet School were attending their first anatomy class with a real dead cow. They all gathered around the surgery table with the body covered with a white sheet. The professor started the class by telling them, “In Veterinary medicine it is necessary to have two important qualities as a doctor. The first is that you not be disgusted by anything involving the animal’s body.” For an example, the professor pulled back the sheet, stuck his finger in the butt of the cow, withdrew it, and stuck his finger in his mouth. “Go ahead and do the same thing,” he told his students. The students freaked out, hesitated for several minutes, but eventually took turns sticking a finger in the butt of the dead cow and sucking on it. When everyone finished, the Professor looked at them and said, “The second most important quality is observation. It’s very clear to me you all need better observation skills, because...... I stuck In my middle finger and sucked On my index finger.” -------------------------------------------------------------My wife gets embarrassed over just about everything that I say or do. And then she goes on and on about it for the entire day or night. So she’s been out of town, but called and said that my son and I should pick her up at the airport but not to wear anything “stupid” or “that would stand out” so as not to embarrass her in front of all the other passengers. My boy and I were at the airport almost an hour early as it was Christmas Eve day and we were glad she was getting home just in time for Christmas and we stood there proudly with our big sign that read: Welcome Home From Prison Mom! 28
Lil’ Johnny’s father was having trouble with his son as he was constantly cursing and his Mom had just about had enough. She told him to go talk to the Preacher and ask his advice on how to make him quit. “Here’s what you do”, said the Preacher. “Christmas is right around the corner. Ask Lil’ Johnny what he really wants for Christmas and every time he answers and curses, leave a pile of dog crap where the present goes.” Later that day, the father asks Lil’ Johnny to name a few things he truly wants from Santa. Lil’ Johnny replied, “When I wake up, I want a new baseball just lying there on my tired ass old mattress.” “Then, when I go downstairs and outside I want to see a brand new train going round and round that damn old oak tree. “And then, I want to walk down the damn driveway and want to see a shiny, new damn bike, just ready for me to jump on and ride.” Christmas morning Johnny wakes up with dog chit on his mattress. He walks downstairs onto the porch and sees dog chit going all the way around the old oak tree. Then he looks down the driveway and sees the bigest pile of of chit he’s ever seen in his life. Lil’ Johnny’s Dad walks up behind him and asks “So what did Santa bring you son?” Lil’ Johnny replied, “I do believe he brought me a puppy, but I can’t find the little sum’ bitch.” -------------------------------------------------------------The first testicular guard, the “Cup,” was used in Hockey in 1874 and the first helmet was first used in the 1920’s. That means it only took 46 years for men to realize that their brain is also important to protect. -------------------------------------------------------------Is it just me or would Obituaries be way more interesting to read if they actually told you all the details of how certain folks died. Now, there’s some stories! --------------------------------------------------------------I was really gettin’ tired of people in our small town coming up to me at weddings and poke me in the side and say “You’re next, get ready”. Ever since I started doing and saying the exact same thing to them at funerals......they quit. --------------------------------------------------------------I asked my wife what she wanted for Christmas and she said, “why don’t you actually get a decent present this year and invest in a penis enlarger?”. So, I shopped around and found just the perfect gift. She’s 27, built like a brick chit house and her dancer name is ‘Jingle Bells’.
