DISTRIBUTED IN TENNESSEE ONLY!

IT’S FINALLY THAT TIME, time to get our bikes out, dust them off and RIDE!! This month there are so many events, rides and bike nights going on that we are going to be CRAZY busy, but having fun too!

Just How Many Mags From The Wannabe’s Actually Stay In Tennessee When They Sell To So Many Regional Areas?

Did we have some crazy weird weather last month or what? We were literally snowed in, on and off for like 3 weeks! So unfortunately this has delayed the kick-off for the Tennessee Thunder Run Ride n’ Win Contest to the 1st of May :( Good news is, we are thinking about running the contest year around, but would love some feedback from our advertisers and readers about it. So let us hear your thoughts on our Facebook page or by email at tennesseethunderrun@gmail.com

(We Have State Owners/Publishers, Not Regional Sales Areas)

With the 2015 riding season upon us we would like to share a few tips in an effort to make sure everyone rides safely this riding season. Even if you winterized your motorcycle for off‐season storage, you’ll want to go through this checklist before your first ride of the season. Here’s a quick 7-point plan to winter recovery, in order of importance: 1. Manual Labor - Dust off your trusty service manual and skim through it. 2. Fuel First - You shouldn’t use fuel that has been sitting. 3. Battery Maintenance – AGM, Lead-acid or lithium, you probably need a charge. 4. Tires - Will they be good for the whole season? 5. Oil and Filter - Now is a good time to change them. 6. The Forgotten Fluids - Don’t forget your brake fluid and coolant. 7. Spring Cleaning - Days are getting longer, make your bike shine. Yes, it’s a lot to do. But it’s stuff you’d more than likely have to do sometime soon anyway. Consider it getting a jump on your bike maintenance for the year. Attention Ladies... We are looking for a classy sexy photo of you and your ride (or can be someone else’s ride) to be a possible pull-out calendar photo in an issue of Thunder Roads Tennessee!! PLEASE do not post picture to Facebook, please email us photo submissions to thunderroadstn@gmail.com. Key words, classy sexy, any bike, etc., and provide contact info in your email. Also, anyone that has a cool custom bike, keep sending your pics for the Bike of the Month Contest for a chance to have your bike featured in our magazine. Look for Brian’s bike in this month’s issue! ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. NO PART OF ITS CONTENT MAY BE REPRODUCED WITHOUT WRITTEN PERMISSION. “Don’t Quit” Once you’ve learned how to Quit you’ll Quit sooner the next time! We have been taught to Quit at an early age. We Quit on schools, sports, jobs, marriages, Churches, family, friends and then we end up Quitting on life. The first step you take towards Quitting is the first step you take towards suicide. Ever wondered why some famous entertainers and pro-athletes commit suicide when it seems they had it made? I once coached football and the hardest thing I would teach my players; “Don’t Look At the Scoreboard.” Our society had taught us that winning is the only thing that matters and if you can’t come in 1st place you’re a loser. When we look at the “Scoreboard of Life” and we’re so far behind everybody else, we Quit. I like what the Apostle Paul said in 2 Tim.4:7 “I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course.” Therein lies the problem. We’ve been taught how to compete and how to win, but we have never been taught to “Finish.” It’s not that important to come in first place, the important thing is to finish what you started. Ever notice that the people that Quit always play the “Blame Game”? They blame other people, the boss, the Pastor, coach, teacher, the white man, the black man, mom, and dad. People that “start all over” never finish anything. The Apostle Paul thought about Quitting: 2 Cor.1: 8 “…we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life. We had the sentence of death in ourselves.” Even Jesus wanted to Quit, three times! Mat. 26:39 “Father let this cup pass from me; nevertheless not my will but thou will be done.” Vs. 42 “The second time: let this cup pass from me, but not my will but Your will be done.” Vs.44 …He prayed the third time, saying the same thing.” For Jesus to go through this three times it had to be really bad. The problem is not in wanting to Quit, the problem is in the Quitting itself. Jesus may have wanted to Quit but He submitted Himself to the Father, “Not my will be done, but thy will be done.” 1 Sam.17: 40-51, David didn’t run from the giant but he ran at the giant Goliath with nothing but a rag & April 2015

a rock. David ended up killing Goliath with his own sword. David didn’t Quit, even with the overwhelming odds against him. What some people see as the opposition, others see as an opportunity. It is all based on your perspectives and how you see your Goliaths. I can’t control the Goliaths in my life to stop coming at me, but I can control my perspective of those Goliaths. Our perspectives are the difference between success and failure. Goliaths only come along to “shut you up.” You got to decide if you’ve got something to say or not! Do you see yourself as an answer to a problem or are you always seeking an answer to your own problems, your own Goliaths? When people meet you for the first time, are they meeting you or your Goliaths? God calls on people who are answers to a problem. Employers need people who can fulfill needs. Singles are looking for a partner who can help build a life. Needed people will always be needed because they let the Goliaths in life shut them up. Experts say that under an animal attack, the best thing to do is to play dead and you won’t get bit, but the real cost is getting back up, so get up, and stand up to your Goliath because we’ve got something to say, “JESUS IS LORD.” Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

K.I.S.S. page composed & edited by: Toni McCoy Shearon aka “MaMa Thunder” of Thunder Roads National Founders’ Office. SPRING has SPRUNG....so let’s keep it light, fresh and tasty! This is one of my all-time favorites and good cold, also.

EASTER EASY GLAZED HAM STEAKS 2 Thick-Cut Ham Steaks (find these in same section where they sell whole hams or next to pork chops in meat section) Do not mistake for the small, pork chop looking ham steaks. These are BIG, shaped and come in a clear, thick wrap and are essentially pre-cooked. You’re just adding flavor and color to them. Take them out of fridge, let them come to room temperature, cut out of thick wrapper and each one will literally take up almost a full plate. DRY RUB: Small of palm each of: Pepper Salt (easy, as it’s pork & already salty) Dry Mustard Powder Garlic Powder Rosemary; fine chop Set aside Parsley and 1/2 cup of Maple syrup Your ham steaks will already be wet coming out of the package. Swipe off excess with hand and put both on a big platter. Generously apply Dry Rub to each side and let rest for apprx. 10 mins. Now, I use my X-large cast iron skillet, but have used a large, flat pancake electric skillet and even a non-stick X-large skillet. Have even used to medium skillets going at the same time. They’re excellent on the grill also. I let skillet get moderately hot on medium-high heat, add a dollop of margarine and swirl to cover entire bottom of skillet, place them and let them be. It only takes about 4 minutes to turn golden brown. Flip and other side only takes 2 minutes. Just before removing from pan pour syrup over the top and let it bubble down and stick a fork in them and allow syrup sauce to get up under. Remove to plate and sprinkle parsley on top of each. Woo-eee baby! These are audacious!

HIPPITY-HOP PEANUT GINGER PASTA (*If you want to use real gingerroot and garlic, have at it. But I use dry spices to Keep It Simple Sweetie) 2-1/2 tsp. Grated Lime Peel 1/4 Cup Lime Juice 1/4 Cup Soy Sauce 1/2 Cup Coconut Milk 1 Tbls. Sesame Oil 1/2 Cup Creamy Peanut Butter (*quality brand) 2 Tbls. of dry spice Ginger 1 Rounded Tbls. of Pre-Minced Garlic (found in small glass bottle in Produce section of market) Salt & Pepper to taste (but keep in mind Soy Sauce is very salty, so taste before adding salt 1 8 oz. box of premium Linguine 2 Cups of small, Broccoli Florets 1 Large carrot; grated 1 Large Sweet Red Pepper; (julienned) aka slicing in medium long strips 3 Strips of Scallions (green onions); medium chop 2 Tbls. of Basil 2 Tbls. of Parsley 1 Heaping Tbls. of premium Margarine or Butter Take the first 10 ingredients and either put them in a blender, a food processor or just blend them down low and slow in a saucepan until rich & creamy. In a separate non-stick skillet, add a touch of margarine or olive oil and saute’ down your broccoli florets, red pepper and carrot. Cook your linguine; drain, and I transfer to a big pasta bowl and add a heaping tablespoon of butter and basil and parsley. Add in your piping hot Peanut Sauce, & saute’ed veggies. Take tongs and blend until every strand of linguine is WABBIT’S CHOICE E-Z P-Z DESSERT absorbed in peanut sauce. Sprinkle generously with scallions (green onions) and dig in. This sauce is SO 1 Jar of premium Marshmallow Creme’ 1 Squeeze Bottle of Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup delicious, I often double up on the recipe but hold back a full cup just to have as extra for pouring over 1 Gallon of premium Hand-Churned Vanilla Ice-Cream top or using as a dipping sauce for crusty bread. Microwave a small bowlful of both marshmallow creme’ and chocolate syrup. Add two BIG scoops of ice-cream to bowl, cover up with both syrup & creme’. These two are the perfect match. Slurp!

Boswell’s Harley-Davidson 9th Annual

SHE ONLY GARAGE PARTY

H

arley-Davidson Garage Parties are designed to show women the basics of motorcycles, and riding motorcycles. They have hands-on demos, and show some tips and tricks, and provide a lot of information to help women, whether they ride on the back, or to help them decide if they want to go to the next step, taking a new riders course and learning to ride themselves. Betsy and Bubba Boswell, of Boswell’s Harley-Davidson, have been putting on Garage Parties for a long time, in fact, this was their ninth year, and it has become the largest Garage Party Event in the country. I have ridden on the back of Scott’s bikes for years, but lately I’ve been thinking I might like to try riding myself. After, enjoying some pastries with a Mimosa or a Bloody Mary, introductions were made and we watched a video of 5 women that told their very compelling stories about how motorcycles had impacted their lives in a positive way, Betsy even told us her story. All of the ladies were then divided in smaller groups and we rotated between stations to make it more manageable. Our first station, we learned the correct way to pick up a bike that had fallen over. I have been told I could pick a motorcycle up using the right technique, it’s true, and a skill all riders need to know just in case. At the next station, we learned a little about basic maintenance and how to perform a pre-ride check of the motorcycle. Things like checking oil, and tread depth on the tires were covered, along with a few other helpful tips. Then our group

10

moved to the next station where we learned about all of the different models Harley has to offer, and how each family of bikes is different. If you were considering buying a bike, this is probably the first decision you would have to make. We stopped for lunch, which was provided by Boswell’s Grill. Hamburgers with all of the fixings, and a chocolate fountain with plenty of fruit to dip in it. While we ate we talked about riding, what we had learned, and had a little time to meet new friends, and catch up with old ones. After lunch, we learned about motorclothes and essential riding apparel, and how to dress for the seasons. We also got some great tips on packing for trips on the bike, and making the most of valuable storage space. Then we moved on to the fun part, the simulator. They have an actual bike on a stand and the rear wheel is on a drum, and you can ride it in place. They showed us the proper sequence to start the bike, then how to put it in gear, and ride it up through all of the gears and the instructor could stand right beside us the whole time. Boswell’s had a photographer there that took each groups picture and also individual pictures of us on a bike to take home as a memento. Before we left, we all received a gift bag with a really cool t-shirt and some other goodies in it. I am so glad that I decided to attend Boswell’s She Only garage party, I had a blast, and I learned so much and now have even more of an interest in riding my own bike than ever before. Thank you to Betsy, Bubba and all the staff that helped make this experience exciting, fun and interesting!

BIKE OF THE MONTH

1993 Harley-Davidson Heritage Softtail motor. So again I learned something I had never done. I named her Margaret to honor my mother, and she has been my daily bike in rain or shine for a year as she is today. Almost two year’s altogether. I have a few other changes in mind to do to the bike in the near future just to make her unique and something no one else has. I call her my own Heritage Chopper Softail Bagger because of the West Coast Chopper Custom Short Rear fender. Granted I don’t have a chopper front end, but to me I mixed the two ideas to make what I feel is very unique in today’s world in the motorcycle community. Thanks to all that voted to have my Margaret as Bike of the month in Thunder Roads Magazine of Tennessee!! BRIAN (PAC) MARTIN

Congratulations to Brian Martin on winning our monthly Bike Contest! Here is Brian’s story about his bike… I acquired this 1993 Heritage Softail in July of 2013... It was in major need of TLC. I rode it every day, working on it over half the time to keep it running and ride-able. In Feb 2014 the love in my life, Melissa Kirby gave me the money to buy the parts that I needed to make the bike what I had envisioned. After working way into the night almost every day for a month at a then friends shop at his house, and with his help here and there on the things I didn’t know how to do I tore the bike completely down to a rolling chassis, stripped the paint off the motor, sent stuff to powder coat and fabricated and tweaked the bag mounts. Then it rolled out of the shop looking like it does today. About a month later I developed some oil leaks from the paint stripper I used on the motor. So my brother Tim Wixom showed me how to build an 80 evo

CLOVER- 5 year old male Rottie/Shepard mix. He

loves kids, cats, and almost every dog he meets. He was evaluated to be a service dog for veterans, but had to be brought back for a potentially chronic knee problem. He may need surgery which the shelter will provide free of cost, but will need a low key life without too much exertion. He is laid back, crate trained, housebroken, and started leash training. He is not destructive and a joy to be around.

KIEFER-

LULU-

6 year old male Hungarian Vizsla mix. He is very selective about his dog friends and would probably do better in a home where he can be the only dog living there and have dog friends outside of the home. He can get possessive over food, so he would probably flourish in a home without small children as well. He is extremely smart and picked up on training very quickly. He can sit, shake and lie down and is ready to learn even more.

6 year old female Old English Bulldog mix. Needs a lot of structure. She needs to be the only dog, but is good with cats. She is leash trained, housebroken and crate trained. She needs a calm quiet environment, probably without children where she can get walked regularly. She does better by not being allowed on furniture or to rough house. With these few things in place, she is a perfectly well mannered, low key dog!

MOJO- 1 year old male Boxer mix. He is a complete and utter goofball. He is

large at 75lbs but loves everyone he meets, even one of our miniature poodle! He is a staff and volunteer favorite for sure. He does need some exercise and a way to get energy out, but is a sweet boy that ultimately just wants to please you, he just needs someone to show him the best way to do that.

ANNABELLE-

6 year old female American PitBull mix. She is great with every person she has met, and loves children. She is scared of loud objects and can be stubborn on a leash. She selective about her dog friends. She tends to love them or hate them with little in between. She is housebroken, and quiet and has small burst of energy but tuckers out quick. She would probably be ok with cats.

SPARKY- 11 month old male Aussie. He is a double merle in color.

He is completely deaf. He has a lot of energy, and would do well in a calmer house where he can have structure and boundaries. He is housebroken, and would follow you to the end of the Earth for a tennis ball. He would probably be better in a home without children or cats. He is OK with some dogs here as he starts to get more comfortable in his surroundings.

CODY-

4 year old male Pit Bull. He has energy to spare and needs someone that can exercise with him and give him some house rules to follow. He needs a home without chaos where he can flourish. He is a sweet boy and a staff favorite. He needs someone with big dog experience to show him the way so he can learn how to make better decisions and not have anxiety.

THUNDER ROADS TENNESSEE is proud to announce, this spring, we will be introducing a state-wide, summer long riding challenge hitting great destinations and events across the state.

The 2015 Tennessee Thunder Run! It’s a riding contest unlike any you have ever seen, and features great prizes every month!

HOW IT WORKS

Each month, Thunder Roads Tennessee will announce a list of Tennessee Thunder Run Ride Stops. These stops are selected based on recommendations of our readers, and confirmed by our editors. Some of the Ride Stops, will be designated Registration stops. Riders can stop by any registration stop and pick up a card, register it so we can contact winners and you are ready to go. You only have to give your contact info once when you register your card, then you can go to any ride stop location in the state and “check in” just by presenting your card at each location. Once a rider has “checked-in” at a stop – their card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads Tennessee will also randomly select rider check-ins from across the state for special prizes and incentives. Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads Tennessee and our sponsors and will include some very exciting prizes. They may include riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, and many others. This is a contest about riding. The beauty, and simplicity of the program is that anyone can win, with any check-in, but your 16

chances of winning increase the more you ride! The dedicated rider, crisscrossing the state has a greater chance of winning, but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the drawing for that Ride Stop, and also the state wide drawings each month, so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride, the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea, to encourage everyone to get out and ride!

STATE AND STOP PRIZES

Every month the Thunder Roads Tennessee staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop, and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of May. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!

ThunderRoadsTennessee.com

April 2015

THE WINNERS

If your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads Tennessee will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. • Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in. • Some prize drawings are specific to only check-ins for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from checkin’s season long. • ALL CHECK-INS remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (MondaySunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses).

BONUS CHECK-INS!

The 2015 Tennessee Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accommodate riders or particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads Tennessee as part of the Stop Listing.

IT’S REALLY THAT SIMPLE!

1. Get your Thunder Roads Tennessee “Ride n’ Win” Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Tennessee Magazine, our website (ThunderRoadsTennessee. com), or our Facebook page 3. Ride out to the listed stops and show them your card. 4. And then you could win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Tennessee Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards. Thunder Roads Tennessee will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Smoky Mountain Thunder Memorial Ride, or Bike Nights will have special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering their cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards. The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Tennessee Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads Tennessee will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your Tennessee RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as April 2015

well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. As with the magazine itself, the Tennessee Thunder Run is presented through the support of our sponsors and partners all across the state. We have secured several key sponsorships already, but opportunities remain. If your business would like to get involved, this is a great way to promote yourself all across the state in a positive manner. Even if your organization is not a riding destination you might become a sponsor for the tremendous promotional value it offers through the constant media attention it will receive. Obviously this will be a heavy focus within the magazine but we are also working with radio and other media outlets to help spread awareness of the run. Sponsors are able to tap into this network and enjoy great exposure. The 2015 Tennessee Thunder Run will begin in May, with all necessary information and additional details in each month’s issue of Thunder Roads Tennessee. We will also have a complete listing on our website – ThunderRoadsTennessee. com and our Facebook pages. We will include a listing of registration stops – including a wide variety of events in May; including Bike Nights, Bike Blessings, and rides. The RIDE kicks off in May! GET READY! As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at TennesseeThunderRun@gmail.com

Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: In the mid-1980’s, the American Ex-POWs decided that they wished to see April 9th, the date during World War II when the largest number of Americans were captured, as National POW/MIA Recognition Day. Due to a variety of impacts and decisions National POW/MIA Recognition Day was moved in 1986 to the third Friday in September. I serve as the Vice Chairman of an annual event in Andersonville, Georgia, site of the National Prisoner of War museum, called “The Ride Home.” This marvelous event takes place on National POW/MIA Recognition Day. Volunteers work year around to raise money to sponsor former prisoners of war and families of those still missing to come to Americus and Andersonville, Georgia, to be honored and have the red carpet rolled out for them in appreciation. This year the event will make special note of the 70th anniversary of the return of our prisoners of war from World War II, the 65th anniversary of the Korean War and the capture of the first American prisoners in the Korean War and the 40th Anniversary of America’s evacuation from Vietnam and the prisoners we abandoned in Southeast Asia. I also serve as Co-National Chairman of the Board for a new POW/MIA organization called Honor Release Return, Inc. This organization is a small think tank of activists working to improve accountability and get answers for the families of the approximately 83,000 U.S. service men and women who are still missing since WWII. Our government has been actively working to recover remains and repatriate the missing in action since the Vietnam War but the effort has been mismanaged, underfunded and kept families at a distance. Congress has investigated and reorganized the government offices in charge of this task several times. About two years ago a report from an internal source led to Congressional hearings, Department of Defense Inspector General investigation and an investigation by the General Accounting Office. It was decided that reorganization was needed to

April 2015

solve some of the problems. An undersecretary of Defense did an initial investigation leading to a new undersecretary to manage the transition and a special office to lay the ground work for a new structure. In January of this year a transition team was put in place to transition the old organizations into a new one with counsel from family organizations and a few groups like Honor Release Return. The new organization is set to be up and functional in January of 2016. Recently some family organizations were excluded from participation in the process because they questioned some of what the transition team is doing. Communication is beginning to break down and if there isn’t any change it looks like we may end up with a new organizational structure with the same old problems. At this point the government is trying to work to reach a congressionally mandated recovery and identification rate of 200 MIA’s per year. So far the best they have done annually is between 60 and 120. At the rate of 200 per year it could take over 400 years to account for the 83,000 still listed as missing in action. Imagine if it was your loved one who went missing in war and the government said we’ll find them at some point over the next 400 years. Appalling!! The family groups, family members and organizations like Honor Release Return believe this can and should be put on track to be complete within the next 20 years, not 400. At some point at the current rate, the government will quit funding the effort because none of the family members who remember or care will be alive. At the current rate nobody alive on earth will be alive to see the end of accounting for those lost only since WWII. Brave American’s who fought for our freedom and gave their lives will be forgotten and left to rot on foreign soil. Freedom is not free but there are people being paid who show little sensitivity for the sacrifice that has given them freedom. Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those can’t. Bulldog * My monthly column reflects my personal point of view and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Publishers of this magazine, but they, like me, acknowledge the sacrifices made for the privilege of Freedom of Speech, therefore, they gratefully let me rant. Thank you for reading my rants. Hope my opinions don’t offend anyone, but, we all should be grateful for the right to have free opinions.

IN MEMORY OF

RICK HOSKINS AND GEORGE WILLIAMS Ricky “Rick” Allen Hoskins, Sr., of Springville, TN, lost his battle with cancer on February 23, 2015. Rick was born January 16, 1958 in McKenzie, TN. He was married August 13, 1976 to Mary Ann Kloppenborg Hoskins. He founded and formerly owned Volunteer Custom Carports & Garages and he was an accomplished builder. He was currently the Owner & Operator of Hidden Creek Resort in Springville, TN. He was a Member of Buchanan Masonic Lodge #772, and he enjoyed singing and was a member of the Hidden Creek Band. Rick Won several Bar B Q Cooking Competitions and always enjoyed helping with fund raisers in his community. He was also a former breeder of Quarter Horses at Circle H. Rick was the kind of guy that would build a place for his friends to come and hang out and have a good time, thirty seconds after meeting Rick for the first time, it felt like we were old friends, he was proud of what he and Mary have built, and it’s easy to understand why.

George Eugene Williams, Jr., of Lascassas, passed away on March 7, 2015. George was born in Lebanon, TN on November 11th, 1947. Veteran’s Day proved to be a fitting birthday. After graduating from Castle Heights Military Academy in 1965, he served in the Army from 1967 to 1969 touring in Vietnam. Upon his return, he married Gail Sanders Williams. Although the marriage ended it produced his proudest work, his only child, Aaron Matthew Williams. He co-founded Mid-State Sign Company in Murfreesboro, operating and managing it with his wife of 35 years, Pam Ledbetter Williams, from 1973 to 1993. Proving to be true partners in business and in life, he and Pam founded The Visual Edge/ Pinstriping by George thus allowing them to travel across the country, showcase his talent, meet people, and do what they loved. George was an avid and eclectic collector of antique treasures, stories, and friends. He was known for his artistic ability and quick wit. His humor was inherited by his son, appreciated by his wife, and tolerated by many. He loved bad television, good food, and to be surrounded by those he loved. Rick and George may be gone but will never be forgotten! April 2015

5 Undeniable Facts: 1. We all love to spend money buying new clothes but we never realize that the best moments in life are enjoyed without clothes. 2. Having a cold drink on hot day with a few friends is nice, but having a hot friend on a cold night after a few drinks – Priceless! 3. Breaking News: Condoms don’t guarantee safe sex anymore. A friend of mine was wearing one when he was shot dead by the woman’s husband. 4. A debate over a girl’s bust size is like choosing between Molson, Heineken, Carlsberg, & Budweiser. Men may state their preferences, but will grab whatever is available. 5. I haven’t verified this on Snopes, but it sounds legit. A recent study found that women who carry a little extra weight live longer then the men who mention it.

A young New York woman was so depressed that one night she decided to end her life by throwing herself into the ocean. Just before she could leap from the docks, a handsome young man stopped her. “You have so much to live for,” said the man. “I’m a sailor, and we leave for Italy tomorrow. I can stow you away on my ship. I’ll take care of you, bring you food every day, and keep you happy. With nothing to lose, and having always wanted to go to Italy, the young woman accepted. From then on, every night he would bring her sandwiches and a bottle of red wine and he would make love to her for hours. A week later, the Captain discovered her during a routine inspection. “What are you doing here?” he asked. “I have an arrangement with one of the sailors,” she replied. “He brings me food and I get a free trip to Italy”. “I see,” said the Captain. Her conscience got the better of her and she added, “Plus, he’s screwing me.” “He certainly is,” replied the captain.” This is the Staten Island Ferry.”

“Scrubs” texts his friend and neighbor: “Dawg”, I’m sorry. I’ve been riddled with guilt and I have to confess. I have been helping myself to your wife when you’re not around; probably more than you. I know it’s no excuse but I don’t get it at home. I can’t live with the guilt any longer. I hope you’ll accept my sincerest apology. It will never happen again!” Poor old Dawg, feeling outrage and betrayed, grabs his gun, goes into the bedroom and without a word shoots his wife. Moments later Dawg gets a second text: “Sorry again Dawg, I really should spell check. That should have read “WiFi” ..... my bad”. 24

“Hello is this the Sheriff’s Office?” “Yes, what can I do for you?” “I’m calling to report ‘bout my neighbor Virgil Smith.... He’s hidin’ marijuana inside his firewood! Don’t quite know how he gets it inside them logs, but he’s hidin’ it there.” “Thank you very much for the call, sir.” The next day, the Sheriff’s Deputies descend on Virgil’s house. They search the shed where the firewood is kept. Using axes, they bust open every piece of wood, but find no marijuana. They sneer at Virgil and leave. Shortly, the phone rings at Virgil’s house. “Hey, Virgil, did the Sheriff come?” “Yeah, how’d the hell you know?” “Did they chop all your firewood in half?” “Hell yeah they did!” “Happy Birthday, buddy. You’re all set for the Wnter now”. A friend asked me, “Now that you are retired, do you still have any sort of job?” I replied, “Yes, I am my wife’s sexual advisor.” Somewhat shocked, he said, “I beg your pardon, but what do you mean by that?” “Very simple. My wife has told me that when she wants my f-ing advice, she’ll ask me for it.” HAPPY EASTER, BIKERS! Hide them eggs really good for your kids or grand ones. Give them a safe ride on your bike and introduce them early to the lifestyle. Priceless.

You’re An EXTREME Redneck When... You let your 14-year-old daughter smoke at the dinner table in front of her kids. You’ve been married three times and still have the same in-laws. You think a woman who is out of your league bowls on a different night. You wonder how nice service stations keep their rest-rooms so clean and always have toilet paper. You think the last words of the Star-Spangled Banner are ‘Gentlemen, start your engines.’ At least two of your kids were born on a pool table. You need one more hole punched in your card to get a freebie at the House of Tattoos. You can’t get married to your beloved because there’s a law against it. But you probably are gonna’ go for it anyway. You ask the girl of your dreams out and she says, “Alright, but I insist on going Dutch”, so you show up for your date wearing wooden clogs. You have a bonafide ass-eatin’ dog tied to your electric meter and video, in case the fun begins. Your Aunt is also your older sister & possible Mom.

History of Motorcycles

G

Part 2

ottlieb Daimler graced the world with his presence in 1834 in the town of Schorndorf Wartenburg, Germany. Growing up he studied at Polytechnic in Stuttgart and apprenticed as a gunsmith. Luckily for the modern day biker, he was a curious man and wanted to increase his understanding of engineering, he set out on a journey to France that would eventually lead him to create the first gas powered motorcycle. The predecessor to the dreams of many and to the lifestyle enjoyed by those of us fortunate enough to have found love on two wheels. Daimler’s work on the first gas powered engine began on the engine of JJ Lenoir in Paris and continued to the factory of Joseph Whitmore in Manchester. In 1872 Daimler settled into a position working for Nikolaus Otto at the DeutzAG-Gasmotorenfabrik in Cologne, which at the time was the world’s largest manufacturer of stationary engines. It was here that Daimler met Wilhelm Maybach. Maybach was a designer, and would quickly become Daimler’s closest friend and coconspirator. Daimler and Maybach spent their time focusing on gas engine development and partnered up in the business in 1882. Daimler and Maybach set up shop in a greenhouse that they converted into a fully functioning workshop in Stuttgart. The greenhouse became the refuge of the two engineers. They worked day and night in complete secrecy. The two were so guarded in their development that even their families were unaware of what the two were up to in the greenhouse. Then something that any of us living in a small town can relate to happened…when you don’t have the inside scoop on what’s going down…you create your own reality, and of course spread it far and wide. Eventually a suspicious gardener, unable to convince the two men to divulge their secret, called in local law enforcement on suspicion of a money counterfeiting operation inside the converted greenhouse. Once the police were able to conduct their search, which turned up only tools and some drawings, the partners were allowed to continue their work uninterrupted. In 1885 Daimler patented what is generally recognized as the prototype of the modern day gas engine. The so called “grandfather clock” set up had an enclosed crank case on which the air-cooled cylinder was mounted in an upright position. The single cylinder engine weighed in at a mere 132 pounds with April 2015

a displacement of 264 cubic centimeters and developed an output of 0.5 horsepower at 650 rpm. This model’s intake valve operated automatically, and the exhaust valve was actuated by curved groove control in the flywheel. Daimler was confident that this prototype’s low weight and compact size ensured its suitability for installing in vehicles. The next logical step for the innovative pair was to put their engine into something and see just what the hell would happen. Daimler chose a wooden framed bicycle on which he installed workable controls. The pair called it the “Reitwagen”, or two wheeled riding carriage. Also known as the “Einspur”, or single track, it featured 2 additional spring mounted out-rigger wheels…“training wheels” if you will, added for balance. November 10th, 1885 Daimler put his son, Paul, onto the machine and sent him off on a test ride. At just 17 years old, I’m not sure if Paul was just as eager as any other teenage boy to hop on two wheels, or if he was possibly the “problem child” and so was chosen by his father in an attempt to rid himself of one of the pains in his ass. At any rate, the test ride was successful…Paul made the inaugural trip from Cannstatt to Unterturkheim and back. That’s approximately an 8 mile trip. Considering that the road conditions in 1885 had to be horrendous, that’s quite a haul. The maiden voyage had but one problem, which Daimler felt was minor…the heat of the engine set the saddle on fire. I don’t know about you, but having my ass on fire for 8 miles seems like a big problem to me! Thankfully a lot of improvements were made in the motorcycle industry between 1885 and the first ride I ever took. Daimler and Maybach continued to work on engine concepts and improved models throughout the late 1800’s. They completed single engines, 4 cylinder types, as well as V-twin models. While Daimler’s Reitwagen is often named the first gas powered motorcycle, the original was unfortunately destroyed in 1903 during a factory fire in Cannstatt, just 3 short years after Daimler’s death. Maybach went on to create the Mercedes, and while there is no extravagant story behind Daimler’s death, we do owe him a great deal of gratitude. Gratitude for the gunsmith’s apprentice, turned visionary. Gratitude for the moment in Daimler’s head where the dual development of a viable gas-powered engine and the modern bicycle collided. Following Daimler’s greenhouse conspiracy, the doors were opened for large scale motorcycle manufacturing in the 1900’s…. seems like the perfect place to take a closer look next time. CONCEALED PISTOL LICENSE

Because we offer Concealed Pistol License (CPL) classes at the store, we field hundreds of questions about the process of CPL application and renewal here in Michigan. Application is actually relatively simple, but varies slightly from county to county. The prerequisite to submitting your application to your county is to take a class whose instructor is accredited by either the NRA or MCOLES, which each offer a class that meets the State legal requirements, as stated in MCL Section 28.425j. Here is a step by step guide to your entire application process. Step One: Verify that you meet the requirements to obtain a CPL by thoroughly reading the application. Step Two: Take a class taught by a NRA or MCOLES certified instructor. Be sure that you’re getting your money’s worth! The class should be at least 8 hours of total instruction from start to finish, covering all the basics, including safe gun handling, proper storage, and shooting positions, as well as all the laws you need to know to legally carry concealed in the State of Michigan. The class must include range time! If it does not cover all of that, not only are you getting cheated as a student, but it’s also illegal. Step Three: Check your certificate BEFORE you leave the class. Make sure your name is spelled EXACTLY the same as your driver’s license. Be sure that the certificate contains the following phrase, “This course complies with section 5j of 1927 PA 372,” as well as the instructor’s printed name and signature. It must say where and when the course was conducted. Some important changes will be effective December 01, 2015. The certificate must also contain the telephone number of the instructor, the name and phone number of the accrediting agency (NRA/ MCOLES), the instructor’s certification number, if any, and the expiration date of their certification. Step Four: Fill out your application, but DO NOT sign the bottom until you get to the county clerk!

They must witness your signature, or you’ll have to fill it out all over again! You can obtain the application from the Michigan State Police website or a County Clerk’s Office. We also provide a quick link on our website for convenience at wolverineshooting.com/ firearms-classes. Step Five: Take your application and certificate to your county clerk for submission. They will make a copy of your certificate, and be sure that you keep the original. This certificate may be required for future training classes you might wish to take, so be sure to store it in a safe place. The application fee is $105, and they may charge you a maximum of $15 to process your fingerprints and/or photograph. Most counties require you to visit the Sheriff’s Office located off-site following your application submission. Be sure to take your receipt with you, and check the times they are available for fingerprinting! Some counties will require that you bring your own passport-quality photograph, but most can take one there for a nominal fee. Some of the counties even allow you to fill out your application online! Be aware that you still have to go in and sign the form under oath! Step Six: Within five years, you will be required to renew your CPL. Make sure to apply 60-90 days in advance of your expiration date! You must have reviewed your training materials for three hours and shot on a range for one hour, all within the last 6 months, as part of your renewal requirements. We offer a CPL “Renewal” option, as do many instructors, which would allow you to sit in on three hours of the class and includes an hour on the range. Many people seem to prefer this option as opposed to studying on their own. You will be required to sign an affidavit stating that you have done this, so be sure that you are prepared to do so! You will fill out the same application, but you will additionally sign the portion for renewal applications. Make sure you do NOT sign the bottom until you arrive at the Clerk’s Office.

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) ANTI-PROFILING MEASURES SPREAD NATIONWIDE - NCOM-LTF UPDATE: This is one of the most exciting and productive Legislative seasons we have had in a very long time, as a unified community and as a freedom seeking culture. We are moving towards our goal of Critical Mass in establishing a National Movement to end Motorcycle Profiling with eight States in the process of Bill sponsorship, committee hearings or have already passed anti-profiling protection. Once we reach that tipping point, look out Washington D.C.! I met with the Congressional Motorcycle Caucus Co-Chair and discussed a National Anti-Profiling Bill, and he’s willing to listen. Currently from Washington State across the country to New York State and including; California, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Maryland, North Carolina, Missouri, all have motorcycle anti-profiling bills. The NCOM Legislative Task Force is accessible when called upon by any, and willing to assist providing a cohesive plan to help insure success with; “Lessons Learned from Washington State”, Fiscal analysis, Collecting a Pattern of Evidence, Controlling the Message when giving Testimony, all are substantiated documents authored by our own US Defender Commander from Washington and NCOM LTF Vice Chair, Double D, who is willing to travel and provide excellent testimony to accompany the effort from any State. We have launched a campaign Nationwide to “Save the Patch”; the many facets of our network continue to raise funds contributing to the Trademark Defense Fund regarding the Mongols MC patch. It is a Unifying Event for everyone across the country, and it is going to take all of us participating to defeat this discriminatory attack on our patches! As we speak, another case involving the Devils Diciples MC copyrighted patch is under attack as well. LTF members are in strategic meetings to develop a plan to fight this case. A new attitude, a new Mission Statement defining who we are, and a revival of fundamentals that work. Look at our roster, the best of the best. Historic! Our NCOM BOD and the LTF reflects an accurate snapshot of our motorcycling community at large. We are members of every organization in the motorcycle rights work arena. So the time is now to reach across any divide, put aside old petty grievances that only a handful even remember anyway, and embrace the National MRO’s and SMROs all working in sync that can achieve great things collectively. See you at the NCOM Convention in Denver; it’s going to be a good one! 32

LANE SPLITTING COULD MOVE BEYOND CALIFORNIA California is the only state in the U.S. where motorcyclists are allowed to cruise between lanes of cars, a practice called lane-splitting that is normally used to cut through stalled or slow-moving traffic. But now, an effort to legalize lane-splitting in other states, such as Washington, Oregon, Texas and Tennessee, is gathering momentum amid a push

Gatherings by donna kay

Gatherings by donna kay is a Christian owned and operated small business located at 327 West Main St in Lebanon, TN. The owners, Donna and Greg Harrell are lifelong residents of Lebanon and longtime motorcycle enthusiasts. They are members of the Christian Motorcycle Association and affiliated with the Steel Witness Chapter in Mt. Juliet, TN. Gatherings is a unique store that offers Christian apparel, motorcycle apparel and accessories, gift items, décor, fashion accessories and much more. Their moto is “Sharing Faith Through Fashion”, Donna says “We want to acknowledge the Lord in all we do while sharing his gospel through the products we sell”. After working in the medical field for about twenty years Donna felt that she wasn’t doing what she was supposed to be doing. She felt God leading her in a different direction and that’s when she started making jewelry and pursuing photography. The business started in their home in the first part of 2012 and became an actual business on May 15, 2012 but it was still part time because Donna worked a full time job, but in September of 2013, she took the “leap of faith”, and with the support of her wonderful husband Greg, she made the switch to running the business full time. Gatherings started out by selling the wonderful handmade jewelry, and photography prints that Donna creates herself, but soon after they opened, they started carrying a line of Christian t-shirts, then added several gift items and fashion accessories to the inventory. Recently, they have expanded, and now carry motorcycle apparel and accessories such as hoodies, tees, helmets, patches, gloves and lots more. Greg, is a local truck driver but works in the store alongside Donna on his days off. While she makes jewelry and photographic prints, Greg is busy making vinyl lettering, such as decals and signs, and has recently added screen printing to his list of services. They are both really excited about their newest project, making their own t-shirts and hats. Today the store has tripled in size from where they started, and continues to grow everyday as they continue to add new products. Donna says “We look forward to seeing where God leads us in the future and how he allows us grow”. You can also shop through their website and online store at www. gatheringsbydonnakay.com. Be sure to ride safe and if you ride through Lebanon be sure to stop at Gatherings by donna kay.
