April 2016

HAPPY SPRING! It’s that time… time to get out and head to your favorite bike night, attend events and rally’s or just get out and RIDE! I hope everyone managed to stay well all winter, we have had a time with illness the last few weeks in our home! The dreaded FLU virus got me at the beginning of March, then just as I was almost over it, Scott gets it. He rarely gets sick, I think it’s partly because he is exposed to everything at the Fire hall and after 27 years his immune system is very good. Since he isn’t used to getting sick, when he gets sick, he is the WORST patient on the planet, LOL!! I thought I was going to have to take him to the ER but he wouldn’t have it so we dealt with the flu the whole month of March. Needless to say, it put a damper on all our plans to get out and set up Registration and Ride Stops for the Tennessee Thunder Run, so as you can see, the list in this issue isn’t as long as we hoped it would be. We have a lot of places that want to be Ride Stops, we just didn’t make it around to all of them to get them set up due to being so sick all month. BUT, please check our Facebook page and website daily as the list will grow every week. Speaking of websites, if you have tried to access ours lately, it has been under construction, but we had a little time while we were sick to work on our new and improved site and hope you will take a look at it and let us know what you think :) The Tennessee Thunder Run Registration/Ride Stops and Ride Stops will be updated daily on the website and you can view all the events happening around the State as well as purchase Thunder Roads Tennessee apparel and subscriptions. Check it out… www.ThunderRoadsTennessee.com This year Thunder Roads® Tennessee along with Boswell’s H-D® Country Roads are proud sponsors for the 2016 Buffalo Valley AMA Amateur Hillclimb at the Middle Tennessee Dragway. We would love to see you all at this event on April 9th and September 17th! You can find all the details on the ad in this issue or look at their Facebook page, Buffalo Valley Hillclimb. We will have our booth set up there, so stop by and see us. Show us your Ride Card and you will get a BONUS CHECK-IN for attending this event! We will also have our booth set up at the AMA Pro Hillclimb Championship event on July 30th also sponsored by Boswell’s H-D® Country Roads and Thunder Roads® Tennessee. There are a LOT of bike nights, poker runs, and other events going on this month, so be sure and check them out on the events page and our wonderful advertiser’s ads and hopefully will see you at some of them. Be safe on the roads this riding season and we’ll see ya soon! Ride Hard Live Free, Denise, Scott & Thunder Dawg

“Identity Theft” John 10:10 “The thief (devil) cometh not, but for to steal, kill, and destroy: but I am (Jesus) come that they may have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” Satan wants to “steal” your Identity. If you have ever had your personal Identity stolen then you know how devastating it can be. Someone has access to your bank account and can make false charges to you and destroy your credit. It is satan’s job to deceive you into thinking that you’re a loser and nothing will ever work out for you So, if he can keep you from knowing who God says you are instead of who the world and your past says you are, he’s won. Col. 2:8 “Beware lest any man spoil you through Philosophy and vain deceit, after the traditions of men, after the Iudiments of the world and not after Christ.” Notice that Paul is warning us with “Beware” and that it will be “a man that spoils you.” Then Paul gives us the avenue in which it will come; “Through philosophy,” which is man’s values & beliefs and not Gods. It will come with “vain deceit,” lies that only benefit the liar. Remember that deceit is always laced with an ounce of truth. Next, Paul warns us about “The Traditions of men.” Man has always had a hard time with change and the Bible states that “The traditions of men make the Word of God of no effect.” Paul also mentions “The rudiments of the world,” which is values and beliefs of the world system mixed with a little truth from the Bible. Then Paul ends with a profound statement: “And not after Christ.” Paul is warning us that there are some who prefer to follow man’s religion rather than Christs. If we don’t know God’s Word for ourselves, then we’ll believe everything the worldly religion tells us. This is when satan can come in our lives to “kill, steal, & destroy.” Satan is looking for people that don’t know the Word. Prov.14:12 “There is a way (religion) that seems right unto man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” These won’t know their wrong until they reach “The End” and by then it will be too late. If you don’t know the Word of God, then you’ll align yourself with “man’s philosophy.” Ever wonder how it is that we all serve the same God, same Jesus, with the same Bible, going to the same heaven and April 2016

yet there are so many different Christian beliefs stating that they’re right and everybody else is wrong, That my friend is “man’s philosophy, vain deceit, traditions, and the rudiments of the world.” That’s why God gave us the Bible, to balance it all out by His Word. If we don’t know God’s Word, we’ll fall for anything that sounds good to our flesh. Gen. 2: 16-17 “The Lord God commanded…of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, Thou shall not eat of it.” Gen.3: 3 Eve was trying to quote God:“God has said, ye shall not eat of it, neither shall you touch it.” Now all this sounds wonderful but Eve is “Adding On” to what God said, look at vs.3 again, God never said “Ye shall not touch it.” It sounds good and we may all agree that it should be there, but the fact is God didn’t say it! That’s where man has always gotten into trouble by adding on something to what God has stated, we may think it sounds right, but are we trying to make man equal to God? You can’t obey the Word if you don’t know the Word. Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

Cage Free; A Year on 2 wheels The first 6 months

o what is “IT” that defines someone as a Biker? Is it the Biker bars you frequent, the bike rallies you attend, the club or association you belong to, or participation in a local HOG chapter? Is it the uniform of black and leather with some more black, and some tattoos? Does the bike you ride matter? Must you be obsessed with riding every day or just a weekend warrior? Yeah, I would say I am obsessed with riding, have had a number of Harleys, an Indian, even a Honda. I’m an active Riding Club and HOG member. Got the Bar & Shield tattoo, as well as many others. My wardrobe has way too much black! And my collection of rings and bracelets is continuing to grow. But still the question nags me…”Am I a Biker?” I haven’t been to any of the BIG rallies, Thunder Beach, Daytona, Sturgis, etc.… Been to a couple of the smaller ones, 21 and up deals, but that just isn’t my kind of party. Yet I have a feeling this is not a defining point of what really being a Biker is… I love a challenge, and don’t want to live with regrets, and I feel I need to dive into this and find out for myself what a biker is? And so the idea came to mind to attempt being Cage Free for an entire year. Sell my car and get on with it! So for a year, 8/11/2015 to 8/12/2016, I plan to chronicle the ups, downs, challenges, and freedoms encountered during this search for this elusive biker identity. The following is a recap of experiences during the first 6 months of riding Cage Free! Within the first week of being Cage Free I realized that I didn’t have the kind of quality riding gear needed to ride regularly in the rain and be comfortable. I have a 60 mile roundtrip commute for work each day and arriving soaking wet makes for a bad start to a workday. That being said, a spare change of clothes was brought in to the office as a standby and a quality rain suit was purchased. Along with the rain suit I also purchased rain boot covers, not only do they keep your feet dry, they are also great in cold weather if you don’t have lowers on your engine guard. They also do a great job of not letting the wind blow through your paint leg and boots which helps to keep your feet warmer on a cold day. They really make a difference! I also realized that my bike needs protection from the elements sitting out in the parking lot all day, day after day. It is not just the rain, but the sunlight takes its toll on the seat, dash, and paint. Note to those thinking about buying a cover for your bike, pick something with a high visibility color. The first one I bought was black and a car backed into my bike, the excuse being they didn’t see the bike, and I could see their point, black on black is pretty good camouflage. Luckily only minor damage to the bike. I then purchased a solid red cover and haven’t had an issue since. My next gear purchase was a full face helmet, I knew it would make cold weather riding more bearable, but I also found it to be the best thing to have when riding in the rain! Wasn’t expecting that. With the helmet purchase I also made it a point to have an anti-fog solution. I went with Pinlock antifog lens. It has worked great, and seems to last for about a season 8

of rain and winter riding. I will be getting a new Pinlock lens each year for the full face helmet. Enough gear talk, on to riding. I have always admired hearing about guys doing the Iron Butt ride, how far they went, how long it took, how bad their asses hurt, etc. Sounds like a real biker experience I needed to get under my belt, and this was my time to do it. My buddy Gman was down to do the ride, so we chose a route from Murfreesboro to the Hard Rock Café in Biloxi, MS and back. 1049 miles in total. I read up on tips for doing the ride from the Iron Butt Organization and took their recommendation of making short stops every 50-70 miles for either gas or food to help endurance during the ride. We did this for the first 520 miles to reach our turn around point of the Hard Rock Café. The endurance part really worked! I have never felt so fresh after 500 miles of riding. We felt so good that we decided to just drain the tanks before we made stops on our way back to Murfreesboro. That helped us make good time but we were wiped out by the finish of it. It took us 17 hours total to make the ride with a couple rain delays along the way. Loved the experience, but not something I desire to do again. At the halfway point of the Cage Free adventure. I have ridden 11,054 miles since the start on August 11th, 2015. My wife Chris has been such great support! I love her for putting up with my motorcycle madness and actually encouraging me in it. Taking the time to actually focus on riding everyday has brought some unique and subtle insights about riding that I may have never have noticed until now. Here are some of those thoughts; I really enjoy riding in stormy weather, especially in the moments just before and after bad weather. Wow! I actually enjoy my full face helmet. Probably the most “make a difference” piece of gear when riding in the rain. (I had never worn a full face helmet in the past) If the forecast says 80% chance of rain, it is probably 50/50 that you will actually get rained on. There have been so many more good days of riding despite the percentage chance of rain in the forecast that would have kept me off the bike in the past. Pack rain gear and ride! The safest way to ride, is to ride in the moment! Don’t be day dreaming or worrying about something in the future or the past. Riding in the moment will help you foresee a dangerous situation ahead and help you react quickly to avoid an accident. But most of all you will enjoy the ride even more! Here is my personal mantra that goes through my head as I start a ride, “Heads Up, Stay Sharp, Ride Smart”. With all that said, I am really looking forward to the weather getting better as spring arrives. The next 6 months will be filled with club rides, poker runs, HOG rides, and bike rallies! You can read up on my experiences on Word Press at: https://cagefreeayearontwowheels.wordpress.com/ And on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CageFreefor12months/ I’d like to thank the following: Scott High of Thunder Roads for a lot of great advice, the Road Warriors Riding Club for brotherhood, the Murfreesboro HOG chapter and all the bikers I have ridden with and encouraged me on this great adventure!

America the Beautiful Meteor Crater Arizona As we were traveling Route 66, we discovered a gem that we had never heard of. If you wonder about what would happen if a major meteorite landed in your town, Meteor Crater in Arizona is the best preserved meteor impact site on earth. It is located 37 miles east of Flagstaff and 18 miles west of Winslow (as in the Eagles’ “Standing on the Corner in Winslow Arizona”) and is a must see along Route 66. From I-40, the site is five miles off Exit 233. The site is privately owned by the Barringer Crater Company, and is, therefore, a National Natural Landmark, rather than a protected National Monument, as it is not federally owned. The crater was created by an asteroid traveling 26,000 miles per hour approximately 50,000 years ago. The impact left a hole in the ground a mile across, 2.4 miles in circumference, and 550 feet deep. The energy of the impact was the equivalent of that of 20 million tons of TNT. By contrast, the Hiroshima atomic bomb equaled 20 thousand tons of TNT. If it was a football field, two million fans on the rim could watch 20 football games being played, at the same time. It was a natural location that was used for training for U.S. astronauts’ moon landings. In the center of the crater is a cutout figure of a 6 foot tall astronaut, dressed in a white spacesuit. From the rim, it appears as a small white dot! That is one big hole in the ground! They are digging in the center, trying to locate pieces of the asteroid. A large chunk, found on a neighboring property, is on display in the Visitor’s Center. The center has 24 exhibits on meteors and their encounters with the earth. One of the exhibits is a test Apollo space capsule, which never flew, but shows the cramped conditions that the astronauts endured. Check their web site for admission fees, hours, and other information: http://meteorcrater.com/. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper 12

Lady Rider - Christine Ashley Why I ride… You ride your own bike? That’s a question that still throws me off a little bit. Of course I do. Why is that such an odd thing in 2016? I’m a member of a local HOG chapter and there are many ladies who ride their own bikes. Then I look around and take note of the number of ladies compared to the number of men and realize it is a bit lopsided. Not only is it lopsided but the men tend to ride a lot more – a lot more often and a lot more miles. Even when I ride with the ladies, there’s more often than not a man in attendance. Are we afraid to ride our own bikes? What if we break down? What if we (heaven forbid) go down? Can we take care of ourselves? I just want the women reading this article to think about those questions while I tell you why I choose to ride my own bike. How it started….one day I came home from work, changed clothes, and met my husband in the driveway with my helmet in my hand. I wanted to ride! He pulled in from work and said he was sorry but he was tired and didn’t feel like it that evening. My response was, “hey, I could ride my own you know”. The idea was born – I really could ride my own. We had two bikes in the garage. My husband had recently upgraded to a larger bagger and had his 2008 Dyna Superglide still in the garage. I asked him a few weeks later to take me out and show me how to ride her. I was terrified! We went to a side street and he told me to just walk her forward a bit and then to let off the clutch and pick up my feet. I refused to pick up my feet! She was too big and too heavy and I was frightened. We went out one other time and it didn’t go much better. He made plans to attend a relative’s wedding out of town and, while he was gone, I signed up for a weekend Basic Rider Course. I figured the worst thing that could happen is I wouldn’t like it but I’d be a better passenger for having taken the course. The weekend was HOT and our protective attire (long pants, long sleeves, boots, helmet, gloves…all the basics) did not help while we stood around and slowly rode on the hot asphalt parking lot. It was a tough class with a demanding instructor and I left the first long day exhausted, frustrated and determined. I can’t tell you how excited I was to earn my certificate of successful completion and get that “M” added to my driver’s license! Of course, this was only the beginning, I still needed to get on that big Dyna and lift my feet. My husband took 14

the Dyna out to our favorite unbuilt neighborhood with lots of roads but no houses yet. I got on her and took off….lifted my feet with no problems at all….I had my confidence! You see, that’s what it is all about. That’s what I want you to take away from this article. It is a double edged sword – confidence. You need to have confidence to get on that bike and ride or you won’t be successful but you GAIN confidence by riding. I practiced and practiced – every day. Soon I was making figure 8’s in the cul de sac of that unbuilt subdivision and getting her into second and sometimes 3rd gear on the straight roads. One day I announced that I wanted to ride her home – on the real roads. My husband tells me he was planning to ride behind me in the car and let me go slow and take the curves (there are several on the trip home) at my own speed. He said he was surprised when I turned out of the subdivision and rode home at the speed limit, like a pro. I was ready to take off the “training wheels”. The best thing I did was take a long trip with my husband. We rode the bikes east to the Tennessee Smoky Mountains. I conquered a couple switchbacks and discovered that a long ride was the best way to really get a “feel” for the bike. I told my husband I felt like we were “one” – Dyna and I. I’ve been riding for 1 ½ years now and I absolutely love it! I feel strong and confident when I’m on my bike. Have I encountered challenges while riding? Of course I have. The car that pulled out directly in front of me, the deer that walked onto the road ahead, a bike that wanted to stall when I left off the gas, rainstorms, etc. but all of that just made me more sure of myself and let me know I could handle these things. Thankfully, I handled them without panicking and they all ended well and with the bike shiny side up! I credit my Rider Safety class and my demanding instructor for my not panicking and knowing to automatically pull in the clutch or instinctively downshifting and using both brakes…all things he hammered into us during those hot and challenging days in Rider Safety class. Practice, practice, practice – I still learn things regularly that make me a better rider. That and enjoy the ride! We would love to hear YOUR story! ALL ladies are welcome and encouraged to join and contribute to our monthly Lady Rider column. Please submit your story and photos to: ThunderRoadsTn@gmail.com

by “Rebel Ron” The subject of this Flashback article is a native of Maury County who now lives in the Culleoka community. His name is Larry Watson, but long time riders in the area call him Smokey, thanks to a two stroke motorcycle that made more smoke than speed in his early riding days. Larry has a great history of riding all sorts of two wheelers beginning when he was 14 years old on 1961 Harley-Davidson Hummer. Then he moved on up to bigger bikes, Yamaha Catalina, Triumph, BSA, Kawasaki, and even a Honda CB 750 chopper until he settled on a 2008 Harley Softail that he still enjoys riding on the scenic roads of Tennessee and beyond. Smokey also raced Motor-Cross and did hill climbs in his youth. Amazingly he won the very first hill climb he entered back in 1972 on a souped up Honda. He loved his iron horses very much, but he also loves to ride horses as well. He has ridden everything from mini mules to regular horses in the popular Mule Day parades in Columbia, Tenn. for decades and can be found on many Tenn. backwood riding trials today. Larry is a single fella these days, but he was married 3 times. He has a daughter, Crystal, who brought him two grandkids, Ty & Tia. When I asked if he was married during this interview he replied, “No, I’m happy.” I have heard Watson say before that he had many wives riding on his bikes back in the day but only 3 of them were his. Larry was a cool rider back in the 60›s with his cool shades and white loafers with no socks. He remains a fun man to hang out with or talk to about riding and racing in the early days. Hope you stay healthy and happy Larry, while you continue to enjoy riding both hawgs and horses. If you know anyone who’d like to be the subject of this article, please let me know. You can reach Rebel Ron at celticgranda2@yahoo.com or call 931-374-8368.

Bike of the Month Congratulations to Buddy German on winning our monthly Bike Contest on Facebook!

My name is Buddy and I would like to thank each and every one of you for voting for my bike, Megatron. I bought this bike brand new July 2, 2014. In January 2015 I was in a wreck on this same bike and Appleton Harley-Davidson put her back together for me. As I was laid up from surgery, I was trying to decide what direction I wanted to go. I had always chromed out my Harleys, but decided to black this one out. All the chrome OEM parts I had blacked out. It sports a complete stage 1 kit and has all the power you could ask for, as well as all the Mount Rushmore upgrades that the Motor Company added. Again, thank you all for voting and hope to see you on the open road. Special thanks to Appleton Harley-Davidson for not only selling me a bike but welcoming me and my family into yours. If you have a cool custom bike you would like to have featured in our magazine, enter it in our monthly contest by submitting a pic of your bike to ThunderRoadsTn@gmail.com

CRISPY CROCKPOT CHICKEN 1 Whole Chicken

1/2 Stick of Butter or Quality Margarine 1/4 Cup of Dark Brown Sugar Salt & Pepper to Taste 1 tsp. Garlic Powder 1 tsp. Onion Powder 1 tsp. Smoked Paprika 1/2 tsp. Chili Powder 1/2 tsp. Cayenne Pepper (optional) 1/2 tsp. Cumin 1/2 Cup Chicken Stock Rinse chicken thoroughly and rub down with butter or margarine with both hands. Mix ALL above listed seasonings and rub into chicken inside and out. Place gently in crockpot on top of the 1/2 cup of chicken stock. Cook on High for 4 hours. Do Not rub liquid or splash over chicken or your spices will float off. If you need more liquid after a couple hours; add sparingly. Liquid is Not to go into chicken cavity; it’s just used to create from burning. Very carefully remove and put on small baking pan lined in aluminum foil. Place in oven under Broil setting for just long enough to see it getting crispy and brown; apprx. 5 minutes. If you’re doing this before you leave for work, just put setting on LOW and then crisp it up just before serving. This chicken is amazing in flavor. Use this same recipe when you’re home and can cook it in the oven on 350 degrees for just an hour & half. Great easy supper on table in 15 minutes when you get home and the taste will truly amaze you. It is cluckin’ good!

Bullet Points FIREARMS SAFETY

When I was a kid, like a lot of people back then, I was taught how to handle firearms at a very young age. I was also shown the power that the tiny bullet has when it hit a watermelon at a very high rate of speed. Lessons that have stayed with me my entire life. Hunting and shooting are very safe activities for kids, in fact they are much safer than skateboarding or bicycling for instance, not to mention football, baseball, and soccer, hunting and shooting are even safer than volleyball. Even though shooting sports are very safe activities, we must diligently continue to teach children firearm safety. Deaths from firearm related accidents is one thing that can be prevented with proper education and training. Kids and guns are a volatile mixture when loaded guns are left carelessly laying around, unless that child is properly educated about firearms safety. This doesn’t mean that you should teach your children how to unload and clear a firearm; it means that you should educate them about what to do if they encounter one. More than 50% of households in America have firearms present. This leaves the potential for bad things to happen to kids and adults who are not educated. With this said let’s discuss firearms safety and accident prevention. Below are rules that every person should follow when it comes to firearms. This includes shooting as well as handling. Always treat a gun as if it is loaded. If every gun is checked to see if it is loaded prior to it being handled almost all accidents can be avoided. More people die from “unloaded” guns than loaded ones because a person assumed that the gun wasn’t loaded. Unload and clear all firearms prior to cleaning or handling when not on a range. Always keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction. Never point your firearm at anything that you are not willing to kill or destroy, whether it be a paper target or any game that you might be hunting. Practicing this will ensure that you only shoot what you want to be shot.

April 2016

Keep your finger off of the trigger until you are ready to shoot. As long as your finger isn’t on the trigger, there is no way for the gun to fire accidently. Once you have the target lined up with your sights, then, and only then do you squeeze the trigger. Make sure that you know what is behind or beyond your target. If you miss your target, where is your bullet going to go? Are you shooting or hunting anywhere that there might be a house close by? If you miss will the bullet go into someone’s house, or worse yet, where there are people? Keep your firearm unloaded until you are ready to use it. As with checking your firearm to make sure that it is not loaded before you handle it, ensure that you UNLOAD the firearm once you are done firing it. Ensuring that you do both of these 2 steps will ensure that there is never an accidental discharge. All firearms not in use will always be unloaded. Having a loaded firearm in your house for defensive purposes is a different situation. Educate your children. If your children understand the importance of treating firearms properly, you are less likely to have a child hurt by firearms. If you want to keep a child from being curious about firearms, then get rid of the curiosity. After teaching them about safety, tell them that they can always see your firearms any time that they want to. But remember, if you tell them this you have to live up to the deal. If they are not curious they are less likely to want to handle a firearm without an adult present. If they ask to see a firearm, put what you are doing on hold until you can show them the firearm and satisfy their curiosity. You also have to teach them about what to do when they have friends over to visit. Their friends are never to touch firearms, either, without an adult present. Telling on their friend for violating this rule is better than something bad happening.

In death’s doorway, he suddenly smelled the aroma of his favorite chocolate chip cookie wafting up the stairs. He gathered his remaining strength and lifted himself from the bed. Leaning against the wall, he slowly made his way out of the bedroom, and with even greater effort forced himself down the stairs, gripping the railing with both hands. With labored breath, he leaned against the door frame, gazing into the kitchen. Were it not for death’s agony, he would have thought himself already in heaven. There, spread out on newspapers on the kitchen table were literally hundreds of his favorite chocolate chip cookies. Was it heaven? Or was it one final act of heroic love from his devoted wife, seeing to it that he left this world a happy man? Mustering one great final effort, he threw himself toward the table. The aged and withered hand, shaking, made its way to a cookie at the edge of the table, when he was suddenly smacked with a spatula by his wife. “Stay out of those,” she scolded, “they’re for the dang funeral. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------A fifty-ish woman was at home happily jumping on her bed and squealing with delight. Her husband watches her for a while and asks, “Do you have any idea how ridiculous you look?, What’s the matter with you?” The woman continues to bounce on the bed and says, “I don’t care; I just came from having a mammogram and the Doctor said I have the breasts of a 20 year-old” The husband sarcastically replied, “What did he say about your 55 year old ass?” The wife quickly replied, “Actually, your name never came up.”

by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: Looks like the ground hog was correct. Spring is definitely early by a couple of weeks. If these temperatures are any indication it looks like summer may be early too. I’d confirm that with the weathermen/weatherwomen (politically correct) but they don’t have a clue. I’m amazed at how they tell you what the weather will be five or seven days out and then change it the day before to something totally different from what they originally said it would be. A similar observation I’ve made this year is that several of the folks running for public office seem to have taken lessons from weather people. They charge forward, tell you one thing and then tell you something totally different a week later. Maybe that’s just life in a progressive world. Truth not required. For some that’s a good thing because it lets them to say they didn’t send classified information from their cell phone and even if they did it’s okay. Truth not required. Kind of like how we’ve been told for the past half a dozen years that the economy is really improving and yet we have some who were a part of what has gone on for the past half a dozen years who say everything is broken and we need to elect them to fix it. Really? If they knew how to fix it why didn’t they fix it when they had the chance? Did they or didn’t they, broken or not, rain or shine? Maybe we’d do better electing the truthful ground hog. I really didn’t mean to get distracted by current politics but after all it’s on all channel’s 24 hours a day. The TV folks play the same sound bite and the same two second film clip 300 times an hour and still manage to air 45 minutes of commercials in the same hour. They have my real appreciation because I know that can’t be easy. Even though I have a lot of appreciation for how they put 10 pounds in a 5 pound box that doesn’t mean I’m glued to every second of the whirlwind. I’m actually saving on my electric bill by keeping the TV turned off and looking to my motorcycle for the majority of my entertainment. We are truly blessed in Tennessee to be in the midst of such political turmoil in a year that the guru ground hog tuned into the universe and brought us some early riding weather.

April 2016

Just imagine what it would be like if he was politically correct and told us how great the weather was going to be in an effort to keep from offending us and it snowed, rained and sleeted until Memorial Day? That would really suck in an election year. You can only polish your paint and check your air pressure so many times before you run into primer and the threads on your valve stem are worn off. It’s really not practical to have to glue your valve stem cap on. What if the weather is bad for a few more weeks and you have to keep checking the pressure? Can you use adhesive remover on your valve stem cap? Maybe that would require taking the tire to a shop for a new valve stem. That would kill a little more time but we’d still have to survive until after the November election. Thank goodness we have a great ground hog, decent temps and some dry days to bail us out. So I guess that brings us back to the weathermen/ weatherwomen (politically correct). How does the level headed, non-progressive truth telling Tennessee biker plan a politics avoidance motorcycle ride if he can’t get a decent forecast of the weather early enough to plan a ride or trip? It’s kind of like trying to figure out if it’s a good time to refinance your house when the economy is so scrambled. Do you plan a trip in a way that if it’s not raining you can just jump on the bike and go? Do you believe the weather forecast and plan a trip to fit the good weather window? Danged if I know. Kind of like trying to figure out who to vote for. Do you pick someone now or do you wait until closer to the election and hope someone paints a clear picture for the future? Danged if I know. If my wife wouldn’t lock me in my room I’d mail order in an extra-large biker doggy bag that I could put a ground hog in and find a ground hog whisperer to teach me the lingo. It would give me the ability to see into the future and always ride dry and free. It might let me replace Johnny Carson as the Great Carnac and get respect. (YouTube it)! Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. Bulldog * My monthly column reflects my personal point of view and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Publishers of this magazine, but they, like me, acknowledge the sacrifices made for the privilege of Freedom of Speech, therefore, they gratefully let me rant. Thank you for reading my rants. Hope my opinions don’t offend anyone, but, we all should be grateful for the right to have free opinions.

Chais Music Hall and Hotel: If you take I-24 South from Murfreesboro to exit 97, get on Highway 64 going Southwest to the intersection with Highway 269 you’ll find yourself in the middle of Wartrace, Tennessee. This sleepy little town holds one of Middle Tennessee’s best kept secrets. Chais Music Hall is an intimate entertainment venue featuring a quaint bar and scrumptious comfort food. Joe Peters purchased the 1917 building in the summer of 2007, months after losing his wife Chais to cancer. To honor her memory, he created a unique destination where guests can enjoy music, dancing and celebrate life! This classic former railroad hotel overlooks the town’s main street. When renovations began Peters called upon architect, Michael Vanas, to bring his vision to fruition. Five months later, the hotel’s once lifeless ground floor was transformed into a virtual masterpiece. Indian slate, solid rosewood and world-class acoustics are just a few things that make Chais Music Hall so distinctive. Events include live and DJ music, concerts, dancing, dance lessons, singer/songwriter evenings, artist jam sessions, stand-up comedy, singles nights, dinner shows, group luncheons, ghost tours and more. The latest addition is an 11 ft. movie screen for sports and movie buffs. Against insurmountable odds, Peters fought for liquor by the drink. On August 22, 2015, spirits, wine and beer were served legally in this former dry town for the first time in over 100 years. Despite the region’s rural and scattered population, Peters launched Spooky’s Pizza in the summer of 2014. If you are wondering about the name, the building has been investigated by ghost hunters, is recognized as one of Tennessee’s most haunted hotels and has been featured on the Biography Channel’s, “My Ghost Story”. Today residents of Wartrace, Bell Buckle, Normandy and Beech Grove can phone in their orders for hand-tossed pizza, deep fried chicken wings, tasty subs and juicy burgers with hand-cut seasoned fries. Their ingredients are top of the line, they deliver and Spooky’s Pizza II recently opened in the Walter Hill area of Murfreesboro. 42

Once inside it’s evident that quality is a top priority. A commodity Peters considers increasingly difficult to come by in most nightspots. It is also one of the principal reasons why Chais Music Hall attracts a more refined cliental (bikers included). Peters explains, “We don’t allow smoking, inappropriate behavior or drinking on the dance floor. The food is exceptional, the bar is friendly and the music is never played at deafening levels. Our restrooms are impeccably clean and we even escort ladies to their cars, or bikes, at the end of the evening. You might say Chais Music Hall is the proverbial pot of gold at the end of the nightlife rainbow!” When asked what he believes his toughest challenge will be, Peters answers confidently, “Location.” For the record, he is not referring to the music hall and hotel’s location, rather where he will locate the number of guests who will visit. “People drive to Nashville and beyond in search of a place to dance. Usually when they find one, DJs are playing the same loud music and the dance floors leave something to be desired. People want variety and they want something new to do!” Chais Music Hall features dancing on Friday’s, live music every other Saturday and a blues jam every Sunday. For Joe this has been an eight year uphill climb that has included a lot of help from friends and his unwavering faith. If you are riding around the state and looking for beautiful country, Tennessee history, some great food and music, then try the Chais Music Hall and Spooky’s Pizza. Tennessee’s first champion walking horse, Strolling Jim, is buried behind the hotel, one of the country’s premier model railroad shops is across the street and Wartrace hosts a big music fest in June. When you stop in tell Joe that Bulldog sent you. Let’s Ride to Eat!!! Bulldog If you are out riding to eat and see me please come up and tell me your favorite places to go when you’re hungry and thirsty. “Will Ride to Eat” will be an ongoing article in Thunder Roads Magazine of Tennessee and we want to put the spotlight on the great history and variety of Tennessee’s biker friendly establishments.

ANTI-PROFILING BILL HEARD IN MINNESOTA A minority group claims its members are being unfairly profiled and stopped by police, and it’s demanding a bill to prevent it. That group is motorcyclists, and the legislation, put before Minnesota’s Senate Judiciary Committee by State Senator David Osmek (R-Mound), would require Minnesota’s Board of Peace Officer Standards & Training to develop a statewide policy to eliminate motorcyclist profiling, including methods to identify and avoid it. SF1509 in the Senate, and companion bill HF59 in the House, would also require every law enforcement agency in the state to have “a written anti-motorcycle profiling policy.” In testimony, several members of Minnesota motorcycle clubs laid out a litany of their own experiences: Officers they believed had pulled them over on trumpedup pretenses questioned them about who they were and why they were in their community and, in some cases, photographed their tattoos & patches. “It’s my constitutional right to be in a Motorcycle Club,” said Jim Jahnke of Rochester, the National V.P. of the Sons of Silence MC. Frank Ernst of Chanhassen, MN representing ABATE of Minnesota, and also chairman of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists - Legislative Task Force (NCOM-LTF), described an instance in which he said he was pulled over by an officer who claimed he hadn’t seen Ernst’s protective eye wear, which he was wearing, but Ernst didn’t file an official complaint. Sen. Osmek admitted the bill is based largely on anecdotal evidence, but told 46

the state’s Daily Globe newspaper that “I’m focusing on something that constituents brought to me that they had issue with,” and he urges motorcyclists to file complaints and collect data on their own in order to make a stronger case. Meanwhile, a motorcycle profiling bill is gaining momentum in Maryland, having passed the state Senate unanimously 47-0 on March 3 and now moves to the House, positioning Maryland to become the second state in the country behind Washington to pass such anti-discrimination legislation.

FEWER AMERICANS GETTING A DRIVER’S LICENSE It used to be a rite of passage into adulthood, but today fewer and fewer U.S. residents are lining up at their local DMV to get a driver’s license, and new data indicates that all age groups are affected. Analyzing decades of data from the Federal Highway Administration, a team from the University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute found that since 2011, the number of U.S. citizens with drivers licenses across all age groups, from 16 to 70, has decreased. A recent University of Michigan report analyzed decades’ worth of Federal Highway Administration records to show how licensure across all age groups has declined in the period stretching from 1983 to 2014. Last year, nearly 77% of 20- to 24-year-old drivers held a license; in 1983, nearly 92% in that age bracket had one. Four years ago, the number was about 80%. For 16- through 44-year-olds, there has been a continuous decline in the percentage of people with a driver’s license. The news may not be surprising for younger generations, who are more likely to use public transit or a ride-sharing company, or telecommute, but researchers also found a decline in the number of older adults with a driver’s license. Other reports have detected related trends, such as a decrease in the distance driven per person and less travel time overall, but even as the age of driverless cars approaches, a driver’s license will continue to be mandatory for years to come. WHITE HOUSE PUSHES DRIVERLESS CARS The Obama administration aims to remove hurdles to making autonomous cars more widespread, and the President’s fiscal 2017 budget proposes spending $4 Billion over the next decade to accelerate the integration of driverless cars on U.S. roadways. The administration’s multi-billion dollar proposal, which would require Congressional approval, calls on federal regulators to work with auto makers and others to craft policies and rules regarding autonomous vehicles and their development. “We are going to do everything we can to advance safe, smart and sustainable transportation innovations,” announced Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx at the Detroit Auto Show, “We are bullish on automated vehicles.” In addition to the new testing programs, Foxx also unveiled ambitious federal guidelines that he says will get self-driving on the roads quicker -- and more safely -- than ever thought possible. “(These actions) will provide the foundation and the path forward for manufacturers, state officials and consumers to use new technologies and achieve their full safety potential” he said. Now, NHTSA will seek input from automakers and others as the auto agency tries to wrap its arms around the deployment and operation of fully self-driving cars as the norm, not an anomaly. In addition, the agency plans to team up with state partners and the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators to develop a model driverless car policy states can implement, hopefully laying the groundwork for a consistent national policy.

CONGRESSIONAL RPM ACT WOULD PROTECT THE SPORT OF RACING

ThunderRoadsTennessee.com

April 2016

NEWS BYTES

The federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is attempting to regulate racing by prohibiting the conversion of street motorcycles and automobiles into competition-only racing vehicles, but newly-introduced legislation in Congress would prevent the EPA from impacting the lives of tens of thousands of armature and professional racers, their support teams and millions of race fans across the country. Members of both chambers of Congress have introduced bipartisan versions of a bill that would protect the sport of racing by blocking the EPA from overregulating the industry and ensuring that it remains legal to convert street legal motor vehicles for racing purposes. The RPM Act (Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports Act of 2016); “A bill to exclude vehicles used solely for competition from certain provisions of the Clean Air Act” H.R.4715, was introduced March 7, 2016 in the House by U.S. Representative Patrick McHenry (R-NC) with 13 bipartisan co-sponsors, while companion measure S.2659 “to reaffirm that the EPA cannot regulate vehicles used solely for competition” was offered in the Senate on March 9 by Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) and three original co-sponsors. H.R.4715 states, in part: “at the time the Clean Air Act was written, and each time the Clean Air Act has been amended, the intent of Congress has been, and continues to be, that vehicles manufactured for, modified for, or utilized in organized motorized racing events would not be encompassed by the Clean Air Act’s definition of “motor vehicle”. The EPA recently re-opened the proposed regulation for more public comment. The regulation is scheduled for final approval this summer, so the time to act is NOW.

WISCONSIN BILL WOULD RESTRICT ACCESS TO BLACK BOX DATA A bill that would require an owner’s consent to access data in “black boxes” in cars and motorcycles seems more likely than ever before to come up for a vote in January 2017, according to members of ABATE of Wisconsin, a grassroots lobbyist group that deals with motorcycle issues but now finds itself leading the charge in fighting for privacy. The bill covers not only Event Data Recorders or EDR’s but any device that is recording any information or tracking user behavior. Anyone that took the information without consent faces potential fines ranging from $200 to $2000 per incident. The bill says insurance companies would not be able to link the issuance or renewal of a liability policy to whether the vehicle has such a box, or whether the motorist allows the insurer to access or use data it collects. April 2016

Currently, the boxes record such data only in the seconds before, during and after a crash. But critics like ABATE, worry about how much more information the devices might collect as they become more sophisticated. ABATE says while the timing of the recordings may be limited now, safe guards need to be in place should that change. At least 23 other states have passed laws defining who owns EDR data, according to Steve Panten, a spokesman for ABATE of Wisconsin, which supports the bill. EX-COP SUES OVER MOTORCYCLE NOISE A former Texas police officer is suing Arkansas officials over motorcycle noise. Rick Holtsclaw, a 31-year veteran of the Houston police department who placed an emphasis on noise enforcement, has sued city officials in Fort Smith and Fayetteville, Arkansas for their failure to enforce federal, state, and local laws regarding motorcycle noise. Holtsclaw’s lawsuit cites the Noise Control Act of 1972 that makes it illegal for motorcycle exhausts to be altered or removed for the purpose of making noise. In addition, the Arkansas muffler statute requires every motor vehicle to be equipped with the quiet factory-installed muffler or a muffler duplicating the specifications of the factory-installed muffler. Holtsclaw stated that “the law enforcement community in Arkansas has failed to intercede on behalf of the noise-beleaguered citizenry,” particularly at rallies “where there are thousands of motorcyclists making illegally loud noise,” and is seeking $1,000,000 (one million) in damages from each municipality. DRIVER WHO DELIBERATELY ASSAULTED MOTORCYCLISTS STILL IN JAIL A viral video showing a Texas driver who without provocation intentionally crashed into a motorcyclist last October, causing serious injuries to the rider and his passenger, has been languishing in jail unable to post bail since the incident. William “Bill” Sam Crum was indicted by a Hood County grand jury on two aggravated assault counts carrying punishment of up to 20 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000 and is currently being held on $150,000 bail in Hood County Jail since his arrest October 20, 2015. While motorcyclists can take comfort knowing that Mr. Crum has been in jail nearly 6 months awaiting trial on criminal charges, because he purposefully crashed into the victims, his auto insurance won’t cover any civil judgment due to the intentional act exclusion in every policy.
