With the heat index well over 90 for most of the foreseeable future and the high humidity, saying “It’s hot around here” is like saying “you’re a little sick of hearing about the Kardashians.” That means it’s time to drag out The Top Ten “It’s So Hot Jokes” of all time, or so it says on the internet so it must be true :)

DON'T MISS AN ISSUE!!!

10. It’s so hot that now hot water comes out of both taps I have to say that this is not my favorite time of riding season that’s why this time of year we usually head to the relative coolness of the mountains of east Tennessee which we will be doing as soon as we put this issue to bed. In these high-heat conditions it’s important to keep cool properly while riding. Riding in really hot weather is not too bad when you’re prepared for it. Remember to hydrate, keep your skin covered, and avoid hazards. Don’t let the heat weaken you to the point where you’re not fully attentive to traffic conditions and the road. Basically, you must consider how your body will deal with the heat. Reducing the effects of convection, through covering up and wetting down, will reduce the amount of heat that your body must deal with through evaporation. Covering up in the heat will keep you cool. Hot weather usually means lots of sun exposure, so get some good sunglasses or a darkened visor to prevent headaches caused by sun glare. And don’t forget to put sunblock on the back of your neck where your riding gear leaves the skin exposed. Despite the heat, there are a lot of great events happening this month so be sure and check out the events page and our advertisers ads. Here’s some GREAT news from one of our long time advertisers… if you’re a fan of the Bent Wrench Roadhouse but not a fan of crossing the gravel to get to the concrete motorcycle parking, your worries are over. They have paved ALL of the gravel portion of the parking lot! Go check it out, it’s nice. Be sure and check out the Thunder Roads® Word Search on page 37 of this issue for a chance to win some cool Thunder Roads® Tennessee prizes, like bottle and can koozies, shot glasses, patches, and more! Just mail your completed puzzle to us each month and we will draw one winner each month from all the correctly completed puzzles. Good luck and congrats to last month’s winner Robert Levesque and this month’s winner Penny Orange! Stay cool and safe and as always, please patronize our advertisers because they are what keep this magazine going and free to you every month. Ride Hard Live Free, Denise, Scott & Thunder Dawg

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER Pastor Ron Baptiste Founder of Covenant Confirmers Ministries Inc. www.covenantconfirmers.org Founder of Tennessee Biker Medical Clinic Inc. www.tennesseebikermedicalclinic.org Pastor Ron’s messages can now be downloaded off the website Leadership Skills can now be downloaded off the website

“THE CROWD” Ever hear the expression “they fell into the wrong crowd.” A crowd can influence your decisions and cause you to do some things you wouldn’t normally do. Prisons are full of people that were in the wrong crowd at the wrong time. These mistakes can haunt you for the rest of your life. I have found out that there are three different groups in each crowd: the ones that are for you, the ones that are against you and the ones that don’t care. Don’t allow yourself to be defined by a crowd. Don’t allow a crowd to determine your value. If you don’t find out “who you are,” apart from the crowd, then wherever the crowd goes, it’ll take you with it. Luke 22:54-62 we see that Peter was influenced by “The Crowd.” Peter who promised Jesus, “I am ready to go with thee, both to prison and to death.” This was Peter who walked on the water with Jesus, witnessed Jesus heal the sick, raise the dead and cast out demons from people. “The Crowd” had enough influence on Peter to cause him to deny Jesus three times. “The Crowd” had made a fire to warm themselves and “Peter sat down among them.” Be careful what crowd you seek comfort with. Matt. 21: 1-10 we see Jesus making His final entrance to Jerusalem on the back of an ass. “A very great multitude (The Crowd) spread their garments in the way; others cut down psalm branches and spread them in the way. The multitude (The Crowd) cried Hosanna in the highest, blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord.” What I found interesting was in vs. 10 “…all the city was moved, saying, WHO IS THIS?” Everybody was moved by “The Crowd.” Some were for Him, some were against Him and some didn’t care, but “all the city was moved.” Matt.27:20 “The chief priest & elders (religion) persuaded the multitude (The Crowd) that they should ask for Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.” This is the same crowd that was praising Jesus earlier, now crying “crucify Him!” But one of the most overlook points of this entire message, is “THE ASS.” Jesus said “ye shall find an ass tied up,” Like August 2017

this Ass, we were all “tied up” in sin, iniquity, and addictions. Jesus said “loose him and bring him to me…The Lord has need of him.” We must realize that it was Christ that set us free and not that of ourselves. Christ has a need for us to fulfill His work here on earth. Jesus didn’t save you for you to run wild, He saved you for Himself. He didn’t heal you for you, but for Himself. He didn’t deliver you for you but for Himself. He didn’t prosper you for you but for Himself. Too many times people run to the church when their lives fall apart and as soon as God delivers them, they stop coming until the next tragedy in their life. Remember the “Ass” was a beast of burden carrying “Christ the blessing,” If your family and friends are not getting blessed by you, maybe you’re carrying the wrong load. Don’t forget the first time Jesus rode an “Ass.” Next time He comes back to the earth, He will be riding “A white Horse!” Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

Bullet Points

IT’S VACATION TIME – ARE YOU CARRYING OUT OF STATE?

G

ood afternoon, fellow bikers. The summer heat is here, the grass is now turning brown and the central air is running nearly continuously. By the time you are reading this month’s Bullets column, Tracy and I will be well on our way north – traversing many states. And yes, I will be packing at least one pistol for the trip. If you’re planning on traveling, like we are, getting your bike serviced, bags packed and routes planned are not the only things you may need to do. If you are taking a concealed handgun with you, it is your responsibility to know each state’s laws which you will be passing through. The most important thing to understand is which states you are traveling through provide reciprocity for the Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit (HCP). Additionally, and maybe most important, you need to understand how states you will be visiting handle “Duty to Inform” and in a worst-case scenario – “duty to retreat.” The following tables will help you better understand general rules regarding concealed carry outside your state. The first table lists states which provide reciprocity to Tennesseans. The second table provides the same information for states which do not have a reciprocal agreement with Tennessee. Please remember, you MUST follow the laws of the state you are in when you are carrying your handgun. I would suggest you read up on specific state laws, for those states you will be visiting, at http://www. usacarry.com/. Another option is to download the Legal Heat app for use on your smart phone. There is a small fee for the app. First things first. Over the past several monthly columns, I have written about self-defense claims in-depth. There was plenty of information about Duty to Retreat laws, and we will take a much deeper dive into that in a future article – or series. Simply put, if your state requires you to retreat (TN doesn’t), you will have to retreat, if safely possible, before you can protect yourself with your firearm. Duty to Inform requires a legally armed permit holder to inform a law enforcement officer, and in some cases, all first responders, that you are carrying a handgun - whether you are pulled over, or are simply interacting with them. In some states, you only have to inform if you are asked by the officer, others if they ask for your driver’s license and some always require it. Most states fall into one of these categories. A few states do not require you to notify at all. It is my plan, even when I am in a state with no requirement, to let the officer know I am a permit holder, and that I have a handgun on me. This serves to put the officer at ease and you may well end up with nothing but a warning – instead of a speeding ticket. There are a lot of schools of thought on this, so this will be a decision you will have to make for yourself. Be forewarned: If you inform, the officer may well hold your handgun while he does his business. Now to the tables. The following states recognize and provide reciprocal concealed carry privileges to TN HCP permit holders: State

The following states do not have reciprocal arrangements with Tennessee and as such, you cannot conceal carry your firearm there. Some of them may allow you to have your firearm in your car, but you cannot carry it outside your car. Others may require you to have your gun unloaded, and locked in a box – with the ammunition locked in its own box. I recommend not bringing your firearm into one of these states unless you have spoken with their state police beforehand – so you know their rules. State

When you travel with your concealed weapon, make sure you understand which states honor your state’s HCP. Read the concealed carry regulations/ laws for each state you are visiting. Ignorance of the law can land you in jail and give you the not so savory honor of being a felon – which will remove all rights for you to own firearms. Until next month, ride often, with the tires firmly planted on the road! Molon Labe, Mike Noirot Note: I am not a lawyer and nothing in this column represents legal advice. My article is based on common sense and many years of studying selfdefense.

RIDER SAFETY

Now Entering Stormville

“Vehicles being able to see me in the storm as they approached.” “… the effectiveness of breaking in the excessive rain.”

I receive many texts and emails from friends and students on all sorts of motorcycle related topics. Some are fun, like a recent text with a photo showing a small group of my students in front of the DMV with their brand new driver’s licenses including motorcycle endorsements. Others are on what to pack, celebrating personal achievements and discussing challenging events. Riding in the rain has been the main topic of conversation lately as we’ve really had a lot of storms in East Tennessee over the past few weeks!

These are challenges every motorcyclist will encounter the first and most likely every time he or she is riding in the rain. Luckily, Juan was wearing a full-face helmet with anti-fog glasses. The anti-fog glasses took away one of the issues we can encounter when riding in the rain; your glasses can fog up on you - really fast. In order to be seen by other vehicles, Juan used his hazard lights. And, for breaking, he applied both brakes with caution. Good job Juan! Just a note on hazard light use: I spoke to a retired Tennessee State Trooper friend and asked him about hazard light use in the rain and he replied that the use of what’s commonly called emergency flashers, or using auxiliary lighting under low light conditions, is a good idea.

The consensus seems to be the same for first-time rainy weather riders, it’s a big surprise that you simply can’t see with the raindrops pounding down. Your glasses and shield can fog up, the streams of rain covering the shield lower your visibility, water from other vehicles is blowing around you and no one ever seems to think about how much rain hurts until you have experienced it. And, if you happen to have a bit of mascara on your eyelashes it burns! Making visibility even worse! You want to be most cautious when the rain first starts. This is because the road has oil from vehicles in all the small crevices. The rain will cause the oil to come to the road surface making it slippery. The oily residue will be washed to the side of the road after a while. But remember, a wet surface will have a detrimental effect on your traction. The rain also makes it more difficult for you to be seen by people in their vehicles. The safest course of action is often to just find a place and pull over. Make it a coffee break if you can. Let’s hear from my friend, Juan, regarding his first experience riding in the rain. Juan told me he felt he had three challenges: “My vision and being able to see …” August 2017

AAA has a detailed list of hazard light use by state and identifies for the state of Tennessee that “Hazard light use is not permitted while driving except in emergency situations.” While we are discussing using hazard lights, I do want to point out the moth effect. Summarized, the moth effect is the tendency that people will unconsciously drive toward flashings light, especially at night, like a moth to a flame. Hopefully, it’s just a short shower and you can be back on your way. If not, and you have to get out the rain gear, test your gear ahead of time. Improperly fitting gloves and boots and can make it difficult to shift and brake. Remember to slow down, increase your following distance from the vehicle in front of you and slow down the entry speed when going into curves. Rain increases your risk and safe driving in the rain starts with you being aware of the conditions around you. By the way, if you’re ever in upstate New York, you can stop by Stormville and visit. Hopefully, it will not be raining as hard as the day I was there! Donna, along with being an avid riding enthusiast, is a MSF motorcycle safety coach for the state of Tennessee and a HarleyDavidson Riding Academy Coach. She is a member of the Motor Maids, H.O.G. and Ladies of Harley.

GILLETTE CASTLE STATE PARK

I, like most married men, have seen a lot of old houses in my travels. However, a few are really worth the stop. One of these is in East Haddam, Connecticut, the 24 room Gillette Castle, originally named the Seventh Sister, built to resemble a medieval castle. William Hooker Gillette, a noted actor, director, and playwright, built this fieldstone house with a steel frame. Gillette was most known for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes on stage (over 1,300 times) and in a silent movie. The castle required 20 men from 1914-1919 to complete, at a cost of $1 million. The estate covers 184 acres, on the Seventh Sister, of the Seven Sisters chain of hills. In 1943, the house and grounds were purchased by the State of Connecticut, as a state park.

dramatically appear at the top of the stairs to greet guests, or, alternately, to enter or exit the house, while avoiding guests in the Great Hall. In addition, the grounds have a goldfish pond, trails, and his 3 mile long railway line, with its own trestles, tunnels, and station, is now a walking trail. The railroad engines have been returned to the park and are on display.

In 1986, Gillette Castle was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Some of the home’s features include hand-hewn southern oak woodwork, 47 wood doors-each different-with wooden latches, carved wooden light switches, a movable table on tracks, hidden mirrors, and built in couches. The hidden mirror system allowed a view of the public rooms from the master bedroom. Tiffany-style light fixtures add color to the rooms. An easily missed door to a “secret passage” allowed Gillette to

While you can’t spend the night in the castle, one night limit camping is available for a $5 fee. The Chester-Hadlyme ferry across the Connecticut River, from Chester, gives you a full view of the castle on its cliffs. On your next ride to the Northeast, this is an interesting stop along the way. WILL RIDE TO EAT

COMMODORE HOTEL & CAFE by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley

Perry County was formed in 1819 from parts of Humphreys and Hickman counties. It is named in honor of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry (1785– 1819). Commodore Perry became an American icon during the war of 1812. After his flagship was severely damaged he continued to fight from another ship and forced the surrender of the British fleet at the Battle of Lake Erie. He flew a flag that said, “Don’t Give Up the Ship.” That saying is still used to express perseverance and is a naval battle cry. The historic Commodore Hotel was built at 114 East Main Street (Rte. 412/100) in Linden, Tennessee, 37096 in 1939 and operated as the Staley hotel for several decades. It sat vacant from the 1970’s until the current owners, Michael and Kathy Dumont bought and restored it in 2007. The hotel has 20 rooms with a very comfortable historic feel and modern conveniences. Linden sits in Perry County between the Tennessee River and the Buffalo River with beautiful rural highways to ride, camping, canoeing, fishing and hunting. The hotel café is much more than a café. It is a high ceiling dining room that specializes in southern country style cooking. Everything is made from scratch and almost everything served is grown locally on area farms that use organic farming methods. The result is the most flavorful and wonderful offerings you’ll find anywhere and the prices are very reasonable. Appetizers include Bloomin’ Onion Wedges, Honey-Sriracha Cauliflower Wings and Nashville Hot Chicken Bites for Starters. The lunch menu includes salads, hand patted burgers and sandwiches like the “Ring-My-Bella” and “Mediterranean Chicken.” The dinner menu includes Southern Fried Buttermilk Chicken, NY Strip Steak, Vegetable Pasta, Catfish, Pork Chops and the Commodore’s famous Linden Chicken Strips that are tossed in their special Linden sauce. The hotel also has the Speakeasy Lounge with craft beer, wine and a full liquor bar. There is live music on Friday nights and a variety of special events through the year with plenty of motorcycle parking right in front of the hotel. It’s a great place to stop when you’re riding in this pretty part of Tennessee. The hotel has a motorcyclist tour map with several great rides. You can learn more at www.commodorehotellinden.com, or call (931) 589-3224 or look up the Commodore Hotel on Facebook. If you are out riding to eat and see me, please tell me your favorite places to go when you’re hungry and thirsty. “Will Ride to Eat” is an ongoing article in Thunder Roads Magazine of Tennessee and we want to put the spotlight on the great history of and variety of Tennessee’s biker friendly establishments. FIGHT NIGHT AT THE SHED by Scott High Photos by Jerry King

The Shed Smoke House and Juke Joint at Smoky Mountain Harley Davidson is a popular music venue, in fact it’s been voted the best music venue in Blount County for the last 2 year in a row. But it’s more than a music venue. Recently they hosted Fight Night at The Shed Presented by Valor Fights sponsored by Thunder Roads of Tennessee, Main Stay Suites, and Baldwin Cremation and Mortuary Services. It was a full night with lots of great fights starting with 2 Muay Thai fights, with 5 fights on the undercard and 6 fights on the main card which finished off with dual title fights for both the men’s and women’s Flyweight belts. The Titles were won by Jakob Clemons, and Alannah Arnett. Other winners were DeAndre Mays, Brandon Quindry, Joseph Long, Yenissy Alcat, Caleb Miller, Casey Peel, AJ Bowden, and Jrammel Strong. It was a great night of fights, not a lot of fights have Harley Burnouts beside the cage, but Josh Formont tells us it may become an annual event!

MEXICAN “STREET CART” CORN ON THE COB aka ELOTES 4 Ears of Fresh & Sweet Corn on the Cob;

Husked (serves 2) Use as many as you need for you guests. Have (4) long wooden skewers ready as these are your “handles” Have a plate full of quality mayonnaise or Miracle Whip laid out and ready, as well as a full shaker of grated Parmesan Cheese. Boil in rolling water that is salted well and add a good pinch of sugar as well. Remove from boiling water after (7) minutes of hard boiling for a truly crunchy corn and not an overcooked, soft cob. Using potholders, stick your skewer directly in the bottom of each ear of corn; halfway up as this is now your “handle”. Roll it around the plate of mayo or Miracle Whip, then place over a paper plate and sprinkle like crazy with the Parmesan Cheese. Next, take your Chili Powder and add as much as you’d enjoy and last but definitely not last, just before eating, squirt fresh lime juice from up high over entire cob as you quickly roll your “handle” so that it doesn’t wash off the Chili powder. Now bite in and taste the best corn on the cob imaginable. You’ll never eat it any other way. Crispy, a kick of spice, and the mayo and lime mixed w/ Parmesan takes on a flavor that isn’t even mayo, just creamy. Olay!

NO CHURN ICE CREAM..... YOU PICK THE FLAVOR! 1 Bottle of Internatioal Delight Cold Stone Sweet Cream Creamer (in dairy section) Pour entire bottle into your blender. Now add a pakg. of your fave frozen fruit (I use strawberry) but you can use peaches, blueberries, mango....Get creative! Blend until chunky and thick but Peach is pheomenal also.

Pour into a ceramic or glass bowl and add slices of fresh fruit into your blender mixture. Pour your thick mixtue into a freezer type container and after only 1 hour it is ready to be scooped out with a dab of whipped cream on top. You seriously have to make this. SO simple!

BANANA BREAD BOTTOM CHEESECAKE 1 Box of “Quick-Make” Banana Bread but pull a little trick and add some slices of real bananas and mix in gently. Pour mix into a springform pan and bake as directed. Be sure and spray your pan with butter spray and dust lightly w/ flour even if it is a non-stick pan. Let cool thoroughly. Cheesecake Topping: 32 ounces of softened Cream Cheese (4 bars) 1/2 Cup of Sugar 1 Tbls. of Quality Vanilla Extract 1 Cup of Whole Milk 1 Tbls of Gelatin Powder (in Jell-O aisle) 1 Bottle of Caramel for drizzling (typically in endcap of icecream aisle) In large bowl add the softened cream cheese, sugar & vanilla. Whisk until combined. Microwave the milk for 2 minutes and add in the gelatin powder. Quickly stir until gelatin is totally dissolved; apprx. 5 minutes. Pour the gelatin mix over the cream cheese and whisk again until smooth. Pour the thickened cheese cake mixture over the baked banana bread and cool for 3 hours minimum. When you eat this, just nuke it for a short 20 seconds as that creamcheese will melt fast but that’s not a bad thing either; kinda’ all blends together. But you can just slice and eat and it truly is a unique, delicious blend of flavors.

BIKE OF THE MONTH

2016 HARLEY-DAVIDSON FLHX STREET GLIDE

Congratulations to Chad Stovall on winning our monthly Bike Contest on Facebook!

I would like to start out by saying that motorcycles have been part of my life since I was able to twist the throttle! Thinking back I’ve been into customizing motorcycles for that long as well. There has always been that desire to make them look better or to be faster than my buddies! Harley Davidson has always had a soft spot in heart though, to me there isn’t a prettier bike on the road. In October of 2016 while just taking a ride in the truck to get out of the house, we ended up at Bumpus Harley-Davidson in Murfreesboro, TN and fell in love with the Amber Whiskey color and ended up purchasing this 2016 FLHX Street Glide from them. This was the first bike I was able to purchase off of the showroom floor, we were so excited to bring it home. I had no intentions of ever customizing this bike when I loaded it on the trailer! Very shortly after getting it home though I couldn’t take it, it was missing something! It started with the purchase of a cup holder and a couple of t-shirts and then turned into another $10k worth of parts and accessories from extended bags, razor tour pack, air ride, stereo system, and custom wheels, the list goes on and on. I would like to take a moment and recognize the two people that have helped me make this bike what it is, my beautiful and talented girlfriend Jana and my best friend Adam for helping me get all the parts I needed and spending those long hours in the garage scrambling to get the bike assembled! It has since won several trophies and been on many benefit rides to raise money for the less fortunate. We try to ride every chance we get when work doesn’t get in the way. We are humbled that we have won this contest and get the chance to show it off in a magazine. This makes all of my hard work worth it!

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)

MILLENNIALS ARE NEGATIVELY IMPACTING MOTORCYCLING U.S. motorcycle sales for Harley-Davidson, which represents about half of America’s big-bike market, were down 3.9% last year, and investment management firm Alliance Bernstein recently downgraded the Motor Company’s rating while citing the millennial generation as a key contributor in the brand’s downturn. “Our data suggests the younger Gen Y population is adopting motorcycling at a far lower rate than prior generations,” AB analyst David Beckel told AOL’s Business Insider. “Gen Y’s are aging into the important ‘pre-family’ cohort of riders and Boomers are increasingly handing over their keys to the smaller Gen X population.” Millennials have surpassed Baby Boomers in numbers to become the largest generation pool in the United States, and these 18 to 35-year-olds grew up during a recession, which has impacted their spending habits. “I think we have got a very significant psychological scar from this great recession,” according to Morgan Stanley analyst Kimberly Greenberger. “One in every five households at the time were severely negatively impacted by that event. And, if you think about the children in that house and how the length and depth of that recession really impacted people, I think you have an entire generation with permanently changed spending habits.” BIKE-TO-VEHICLE (B2V) TECHNOLOGY TO PREVENT MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS Drivers involved in an accident with a motorcycle often claim they didn’t see the bike. Their smaller size, quickness and maneuverability makes motorcycles more difficult to identify in traffic. Autotalks, the world leader in V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication solutions, is launching its bike-to-vehicle (B2V) solution, a technology for the prevention of motorcycle accidents. The solution is based on the B2X (Bike-to-Everything) chipset developed by the Israeli company. Research conducted by Bosch, a leading global supplier of technology and services, finds that motorcycle-to-car communication could prevent almost one third of motorcycle related accidents, which has encouraged the German company to develop what they call a “digital protective shield” for riders. Digital visibility would warn the driver of a car about a motorcycle’s close presence, even when it’s not visible to the human eye. The goal of the new technology is to prevent accidents from occurring, by providing warning notices on dashboards. The data would be exchanged by vehicle transmitters through public WLAN and ITS-G5. Potential hazards and nearby motorcycles would then show up on satellite navigation, including direction of travel, position, speed, acceleration, and vehicle type. Advantages of the Autotalks’ B2V solution include simple integration, low power consumption, the smallest form factor, highest range of operating temperature and smallest physical 26

size, which results in its resistance to the strong vibration and challenging environmental conditions of motorcycles. OREGON ENACTS R-O-W LAW TO PROTECT MOTORCYCLISTS A “Right-of-Way” or R-O-W law has been enacted in Oregon, as House Bill 2598 was signed by Governor Kate Brown on June 20, 2017. The bill also known as the “Milkman Mike Act” or the “Driver Responsibility Bill” will become law on January 1, 2018 and expands the offense of vehicular assault to include contact with motorcycle, motorcycle operator or motorcycle passenger that causes physical injury. “This means that if a reckless driver injures a motorcycle rider or their passenger, the driver can be charged with vehicular assault and will be a Class A Misdemeanor,” reports the Oregon Confederation of Clubs. The punishment can be doing time up to one year in prison and a maximum fine up to a $6,250. “This is a great win for Oregon riders!!,” states the Oregon COC on their website (www.oregoncoc.org). “Now we have something that has some teeth in it to punish drivers who are determined to be ‘reckless’. We have had too many brothers and sisters run down by car drivers getting a ticket for nominal money or no ticket at all. At best they get a slight bump in their insurance rates. And in the case of no ticket, their insurance company never really has a clue they have a high risk client on their hands. “All it took was a sharp attorney (Oregon A.I.M. Attorney Christopher Slater) to do a very simple thing. He had the great idea to look to see if there is existing legislation. He found legislation that covered bicyclists and pedestrians (ORS 811.060). From there it was easy to add a few words…’motorcycle rider and passenger.’ It was so simple it was brilliant. Much thanks to Christopher and his efforts. Many thanks to BikePac of Oregon and ABATE of Oregon who also worked hard to make this bill a reality. “And may Milkman Mike rest in peace forever. This legislation is something he worked hard to achieve for many years. He was unable to see it done due to a health issue and we lost him several years ago. Mike was constantly working within the motorcycle rights community. He also worked as the coordinator for the Coalition of Independent Riders (COIR). He spent a great amount of time adding non affiliated and independent riders to his communication roster.” NORTH CAROLINA TO PROVIDE DRIVER INSTRUCTION ON LAW ENFORCEMENT STOPS Similar to a measure recently adopted in Louisiana to teach new licensees how to interact with police during traffic stops, House Bill 21 “Driver Instruction/Law Enforcement Stops” has been approved unanimously by the North Carolina legislature and signed into law by Governor Roy Cooper on July 12, 2017. HB 21 provides that “The Division, in consultation with the State Highway Patrol, the North Carolina Sheriff’s Association, and the North Carolina Association of Chiefs of Police, shall include in the driver license handbook a description of law enforcement procedures during traffic stops and the actions that a motorist should take during a traffic stop, including appropriate interactions with law enforcement officers.”

OHIO ‘DEAD RED’ LAW AMENDED FOR BICYCLES ONLY During a lame-duck legislative session ending last December, the Ohio General Assembly passed House Bill 154, commonly referred to as a “Dead Red” law, allowing all vehicles and bicycles to treat a malfunctioning traffic signal as a stop sign and to proceed through a red light after a reasonable time has elapsed, as long as the intersection is clear and you must yield to oncoming traffic with the right of way. Signed by the governor, the new law was to take effect in March, but an amendment was introduced and fast-tracked as an emergency measure to remove all motor vehicles (cars, trucks and motorcycles) from the law, and House Bill 9 amended the red light section to apply to bicycles only. Under the language of HB 154, if drivers think they have waited long enough at a red light, they can go through it, explained Representative Kyle Koehler (R-Springfield), primary sponsor of the amendment bill HB 9 “To amend section 4511.132 of the Revised Code to specify that the alternative protocol for proceeding into an intersection with malfunctioning traffic lights due to a failure of a vehicle detector applies only to bicycles, and to declare an emergency.” Unlike when a stoplight is out or blinking because of a mechanical failure, there is no way for a driver to know for sure if an otherwise functioning light has been signaled to change, so legislators worried that the law would allow motor vehicle drivers to treat intersections like stop signs. Lawmakers rushed to fix the law, and HB 154 passed both chambers unanimously and was signed into law as an emergency measure by Gov. John Kasich, taking effect right away. While ABATE of Ohio maintains that all Traffic Control Devices should be in good working order at all times and is working with the Ohio Department of Transportation to report/repair malfunctioning devices (Red Light Hotline (614) 387-0722 or biker.report@dot. state.oh.us), the organization reports that “Legislation granting motorcycles the ability to treat a malfunctioning traffic signal as a stop sign is planned for the future.” Basically, “Dead Red” laws allow a motorcyclist stopped at an intersection who has not been detected by a traffic signal sensor to run the light legally, when done so safely. Currently, 20 states have enacted such laws, varying in specificity from 45 seconds August 2017

to 3 minutes, or 1-2 cycles of the light, or “when safe”: AR, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, MN, MO, NV, NC, OK, OR, NJ, PA, SC, TN, UT, VA, WA, WY. NEW JERSEY RECOGNIZES VETERAN RIDERS On Thursday, June 22, 2017 the New Jersey Senate and the Assembly voted unanimously to pass Senate Bill No. 1750, and Assembly Bill No. 2729, to create a Veteran license plate for motorcycles. This establishes “U.S. VET” plates for any honorably discharged Veteran. There will be an annual $10 charge for these plates and all monies collected will be deposited in a fund to be used by the Department of Military and Veterans’ Affairs for the support of programs benefiting New Jersey military veterans. “When the Governor signs this legislation, it will end an over eight year campaign by ABATE for these plates,” announced Frank C. Maimone of ABATE of the Garden State. WHAT IF 10% OF DRIVERS SWITCHED TO MOTORCYCLES? In recognition of Ride to Work Day in June, the Motorcycle Industry Association in the U.K. released figures highlighting the benefits for everyone if just 10% of car drivers made the switch to two wheels -- including a 20% increase in parking spaces, a 40% reduction in road congestion and financial savings from less cars on the road. The figures come from a Belgian study, which modeled traffic for one of Europe’s congested roads and found that if 10% of car drivers swapped four wheels for two, congestion for all road users went down by 40%. If 25% of drivers rode, congestion was completely eliminated. The INRIX Global Traffic Scorecard calculated the cost of congestion to the economy at around £30 billion a year ($39 billion USD) – a figure that would reduce if more people switched to two wheels. Drivers could gain up to the equivalent of four days (32 hours) annually stuck in traffic. QUOTABLE QUOTE: “The most difficult thing is the decision to act. The rest is merely tenacity.” ~ Amelia Earhart (1897 - ?), American aviation heroine

A delightful angelic looking little boy was waiting for his mother outside the ladies room of the gas station. As he stood there, he was approached by a man who asked, “Sonny, can you tell me where the Post Office is?” Little Johnny replied, “Sure! Just go straight down this street two blocks and turn to your right. It’s on the left.” The man thanked the boy kindly, complimented him on how bright he was and said, “I’m the new Pastor in town. If you and your mommy come to church on Sunday, I’ll show you how to get to Heaven.” Little Johnny replied with a chuckle; “You’re shitting me, right? You can’t even find the Post Office.” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dearest Dad, I am coming home to get married soon, so get your check book out. I’m in love with a boy who is far away from me. As you know, I am in Australia ... and he lives in Scotland. My beloved and favorite Dad, I need your blessing, good wishes, and a really big, expensive wedding to commemorate this memorable day. Lots of love and thanks. Your favorite daughter, Lilly The Reply: My Dearest Lilly, Like Wow! Really? Cool! Whatever ... August 2017

by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley

Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: Okay, I know I look like I’m just 23 but I have to tell on myself – August of 2017 marks 50 years since I joined the United States Army. I’m giving fair warning that I’ll raise this again in 2042 when I hit my 75th anniversary. When I look back on my military career it is hard to believe I’ve been out of service longer than I was in. During my first 3-year term I did 20 months in Vietnam, came home before I turned 21and got discharged. I had some things to work out, most I didn’t know I had and bounced around for five years then went back into the Army. Going back in actually helped me put Vietnam in perspective. The military is a unique experience for the few who serve. All have similar experiences but all have some experiences and perspectives that are theirs alone. Growing up my father had a shop and was always tinkering or building something. As a result, I was raised in an environment where taking things apart, building things and figuring out how things work was a way of life. My father wasn’t around much so I spent much of my time figuring things out on my own. After I took something apart, I’d try to put it back together and make it work again. Many times, I’d end up with left over parts or what I put back together wouldn’t work. I learned early that the remedy was taking it apart again and trying to do it better on the next attempt. These experiences taught me about process, mechanical relationships and function. Nobody rewarded me for picking up a wrench. I was rewarded when I persevered and did a correct assembly. I don’t remember ever looking at an experiment with a dismal result as a personal failure or a reflection of my value to the world or what my future held for me. I looked at these events as learning experiences and when they didn’t work out I just kept at it until it did or until I broke the crap out of it and then moved on to a new project. My point is that the approach of my generation to something not working seems very different from those now in their mid-thirties or younger. I may be oversimplifying but it seems that we were actually pursuing success and only rewarded for true excellence. August 2017

Today it appears our younger generations are learning from a screen that is devoid of real touch/relationship to the real world or any relationship to real life success and failure and are being rewarded no matter the outcome. I believe this is disabling. Steel is tempered by fire. You can’t temper steel by shielding it. It takes fire. Life’s hardships and an honest assessment of our abilities and skills are what temper us and drive us to be better. We all need to learn to work through hardship and put hard experiences in the past with perspective. Today political correctness and helicopter moms insulate our youth from failure. Our society instills the mindset that being weak, unmotivated and acting on impulse still gets a trophy. We make little kings and queens convinced they have great value to the world no matter what they actually accomplish or what their behavior is. Think about the hard slap in the face they get when they go out into the big world or, let’s say, into a combat zone where reality comes in 6 to 9 round bursts. Is it any wonder we have 22 suicides a day? A wise man once said, “The truth will set you free.” Our youth need to grow up with a foundation of truth and reality. Graham Nash co-wrote “Shadowland” for the Iconic band Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Shadowland is used as a term for the dark experiences of war. The words; “The world would just as soon forget, and watch the wreckage drift ashore, ten years reduced to one regret, the baggage of a war from Shadowland, don’t ask us how our names were lost, our nation did it, sleight of hand, we never saw the line we crossed, that took us into Shadowland.” Combine the impact of reality, confronting the myth instilled by the world that you are the ultimate with the cold reality of common performance and lack of recognition for just being on the field and what do you get? Add the effects of a war experience, the loss of brothers, the guilt of survival or acts common in war but foreign at home and what do you get? You get youth lacking survival perspective/perseverance skills and 22 suicides a day. Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. Bulldog * My monthly column reflects my personal point of view and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Publishers of this magazine, but they, like me, acknowledge the sacrifices made for the privilege of Freedom of Speech, therefore, they gratefully let me rant. Thank you for reading my rants. Hope my opinions don’t offend anyone, but, we all should be grateful for the right to have free opinions.
