Welcome to the last edition for the year! It’s hard to believe that Christmas is upon us, it tends to creep up on me every year. It is rather hectic for most of us, filled with shopping, baking, decorating, parties, and getting ready for incoming family. It is a good kind of busy though, as we plan for and look forward to spending time with those we love.

This year the holidays will feel a little different because we will not have our little fur-buddy, Taz aka Thunder Dawg with us, we lost him November 7th. His passing has just flattened us, a level of grief that neither of us was prepared for. He was a part of our family for more than 15 years and our home and our hearts will not be the same without him. I found this poem and I thought it sums up exactly how I feel. Pawprints left by you... You no longer greet me as I walk through the door. You’re not there to make me smile, to make me laugh anymore. Life seems quiet without you, you were far more than a pet. You were a family member, a friend,... a loving soul I’ll never forget. It will take time to heal -For the silence to go away. I still listen for you, and miss you every day. You were such a great companion, constant, loyal and true. My heart will always wear, the pawprints left by you. Some of you may be wondering why you haven’t seen us out at events much the last few weeks. Well, as I mentioned last month, I was having some back problems and after many test, the doctor confirmed that the only fix was with surgery. Three days after losing Taz I underwent back surgery. It went well, I’m just in a lot of pain from the surgery now, but it’s a different kind of pain that will lessen and go away as I heal. The surgeon thinks he may have fixed not only my acute pain but the chronic pain as well. He removed a lot of disk fragments, some had been there so long they had calcified, which takes years, and the years of irritation had caused the nerve to swell three times its normal size. Then one of the calcified fragments had lodged itself into a nerve which was causing all the pain I’ve had the last few weeks. So hopefully after I heal I will feel so much better, maybe better than I have in years, time will tell. Scott has been so amazing and supportive through this whole event, I couldn’t have done it without him, he is my rock and I appreciate and love him more than he’ll ever know. We would like to take this opportunity to thank each, and every one of you for your dedication, thank you to our wonderful advertisers for your continued support and thank you to our amazing staff for the time you give to the magazine. We are fortunate and grateful to have an enormous amount of support and we look forward to 2018! Here’s hoping that your Christmas will find you among family and friends, sharing the spirit of the season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Ride Hard Live Free, Denise & Scott

“FAITH DISAPPOINTMENTS” John 21:3-11 Jesus had just been crucified. The disciples were in a great crisis, they had invested everything in Jesus. They thought that Jesus would take over the natural throne and they all would have high ranking positions. They knew He could do it, they saw Him raise the dead, heal the sick, and cast out devils. They’re all together feeling sorry for themselves and Peter makes a statement; “I go a fishing.” Peter wasn’t talking about a vacation or just a sporting event, he subconsciously was talking about going back to his old life style before he met Christ. Anytime Christians have a “Faith Disappointment” they always want to go back to what is familiar to them. Peter being the leader he was, the other disciples said “We go with thee, and they immediately entered into a ship.” There are some thresholds in life you just can’t cross and go back because you have experienced too much. What do you do when God doesn’t do what you think He ought to do, when you think He should do it? God is not obligated to our expectations. God doesn’t mind making us uncomfortable if it strengthens our faith. We all face this bridge sooner or later. “And that night they caught nothing.” Now Peter was the professional fisherman, he tried everything he knew and still caught nothing. God can close doors as well as open them. “But when the morning was come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew Him not.” They were so focused on their own problems that they couldn’t even recognize Jesus standing there. We are like that, we get so focused on our problem and the answer is standing right there in Jesus. “Then Jesus said to them, children, have you any meat? The word used “children,” implies a loved family member, they still didn’t recognize Him. The question Jesus was asking them is the same question He is asking us today, “How you doing without me?” Sometimes we need a personal assessment of our own lives. But Jesus stills wants to help them and says “Cast your nets on the right side and ye shall find.” I would have to ask; the right side of what? This is the sea, one large open area. They did cast it on the other side of the ship “and they were not able to draw it in for the multitude of fish.” Following Christ’s instructions are very important. The disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, it is the Lord.” It doesn’t say the disciple the loved Jesus, but “The disciple that Jesus loved.” What an honor to be known throughout the New Testament as “the disciple that Jesus Loved.” This is speaking of the disciple John, John had a December 2017

very deep love for Jesus. You get out of God what you put into God. But it was John who recognized Jesus. How quickly do you recognize Jesus in a crisis? “Now when Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher’s coat unto him (for he was naked) and did cast himself into the sea.” Look at how fast we can fall without Christ, Peter goes back to his old life style, the disciples follow him, and now he’s fishing naked! But why did Peter grab his fisher’s coat (very heavy) and jump in the sea to swim towards Jesus. Peter knew the Levitical Law: “Never come before the Lord in your nakedness.” It was John’s love that identified the Lord, but it was Peter’s action to leap off the boat. It takes both to be a Christian today, love and action. Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

TENNESSEE MOTORCYCLES & MUSIC REVIVAL

OFFERED A CLASS ACT EVENT

by Carrie Repp at R&R Promotions The Tennessee Motorcycles and Music Revival throttled into Hurricane Mills, TN September 28 -October 1, for its inaugural year and delivered an event of top quality production, with a grass roots southern hospitality feel. Guests are saying this was a “class act event” revolving around all things motorcycle, music and camping. The event hosted motorcycle riders of all makes and models at one of the most storied and beautiful ranches in the great state of Tennessee, Loretta Lynn’s Ranch. Attendees enjoyed live music at multiple locations within the ranch including top acts such as; Ben Haggard, the youngest son of late country music legend, Merle Haggard, legendary John Anderson, who kicked off the first night by performing some of his top hits from the more than 40 singles he’s charted over his 30 year career. Also performing was Tim Montana, who spent the past year touring with ZZ Top and Kid Rock. Last spring, Tim’s collaboration song with Billy Gibbons “This Beard Came Here to Party,” became a soundtrack to the Nashville Predators’ NHL Stanley Cup run. Taking the stage on Saturday night was Jared Blake, a motorcyclist himself, who performs at rallies across the country, a wider audience knew him as a contestant on the first season of The Voice, reaching top 4 on Blake Shelton’s team. Guests also enjoyed The Steel Woods, Bishop Gunn, Keith Anderson, Stone Senate, and Mountain Sprout, who played

6

some of the best blue grass music late night down at the waterin’ hole by the creek. The highlight of the event of course, was Miss Loretta Lynn herself taking to the stage; this was her first appearance since her stroke back in May of this year. This was an extraordinarily intimate afternoon with Loretta and her family, along with singing some of her top hits, Loretta shared stories as she embraced the crowd to let them all know just how happy she was to welcome them all to her ranch. For those in attendance, it was a once-in-a lifetime experience to be so close and intimate with the legendary Queen of Country The entertainment didn’t stop with the music; Rhett Rotten’s Wall of Death was providing shows all weekend along with the “Hillbilly Flat Track” mini bike racing hosted by Bean’re. The Hogway Speedway had their version of “fast hogs” for guests to enjoy and some of the very best Nashville food trucks were on hand serving up some delicious eats. Bill Dodge of Bling’s Cycle hosted the “BC Moto-Invitational” a custom motorcycle show featuring handselected craftsmen and women displaying some extraordinary hand-crafted custom motorcycles. Bill himself has chosen what he calls a “top section” of some of the most talented custom motorcycle builders such as Pat Patterson of Led Sled Customs and Paul Wideman of Bare Knuckle Choppers. Some of the other builders were Jeff Cochran, Former owner of Sucker Punch Sally’s Motorcycles and Zach Johnson, son of the horsepower king, Kendall Johnson.

December 2017

“We created this event with a goal of providing motorcycle and music lovers something different than what is currently out there; all of the entertainment was from the region and Nashville, the country’s hottest and most popular music city.” Stated Co-Promoter Buck Shaw. “We wanted to feature music representative of the incredible musicians, song-writers and performers of the area and to fulfill what many motorcycle enthusiasts have been asking for - a destination event in a unique location that celebrates the rhythm of a great road trip. I am confident we delivered that and if you read all the comments on our Facebook page, you will see our guests also feel the same way”. Says Carrie Repp, CoPromoter Of Tennessee Motorcycles and Music Revival. Thanks to sponsors Appleton Harley-Davidson, Alexander Chevy-Buick-GMC of Dickson County, Lucas Motorcycle Products, Budweiser and Full Throttle Saloon, ride-in campers enjoyed a stunning location along Hurricane Creek with easy access to the event hub, concert stage, vendors, entertainment, food court and bars. Tow vehicles, motor coaches, small and larger RV’s also enjoyed premium camping spaces at the ranch. The ultimate experience was camping at Loretta’s, but many people also just came in for the day. “While motorcyclists know what it takes to have a good ride, adding a great destination can make for the perfect trip. Ride the rolling hills of Tennessee, visit the area’s unique attractions, and

December 2017

come back to Loretta’s Ranch for fun and great music with fellow riders.” Says Tayla Lynn, granddaughter of Loretta Lynn and Lynn family spokesperson. “Memaw and my family have hosted the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Rocky Mountain ATV/ MC, AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship for nearly 40 years. We absolutely enjoy having moto-enthusiasts here at the Ranch, it’s what we do!” –Tayla Lynn Wrapping up the 4 day festivities was Loretta’s Ride for Mission 22, a multi-spoked charity ride benefiting Mission 22, a nonprofit organization that provides treatment programs for veterans suffering from PTSD and TBI, while raising awareness on the tragic issue of veteran suicide. 22 separate motorcycle rides rolled in from six states, all culminating at Loretta’s Ranch for an all-star performance to celebrate our Veterans. Loretta Lynn was determined to greet the riders and support our veterans, as she has always done throughout her career. Loretta’s Ride for Mission 22 was able to raise $20,000. TMMR will become an annual event in October! For more information, visit www.motorcyclesandmusic.com and be sure to follow Tennessee Motorcycles and Music Revival on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

LYNCHBURG

FLAT TRACK RACING By Scott High

Flat Track racing is making a big comeback. The Harley vs Indian wars have heated up nationally over the last couple of years and Hooligan Flat Track Racing (amateur “run what you brung”) is growing all over the country. In case you haven’t been paying attention, we have some great flat track racing right here in Tennessee. Patrick Bedford, Owner of Lynchburg Outdoors has been promoting Flat Track races at the Calsonic Arena, Home of the Walking Horse Celebration in Shelbyville TN, for a couple of years now. For the fall races there were over 30 classes and each had heats and a feature race. Grass roots racing is not only a lot of fun to watch, but like the Buffalo Valley Hillclimb, the pits are open so you can go meet the racers and look at their machines. Next year Lynchburg Flat Track is planning a weekend long “Celebration of Speed” with indoor short track races, outdoor races on the larger track, stunt performers, vendors, and camping on site. They may even have some other racing like grass drags and possibly a racing school if you want to learn to slide the back tire. Keep up with them on Facebook at Celebration of Speed.

PRODUCT REVIEW

Legend Suspension Axeo Fork Cartridges By Scott High

Legend Suspensions has been around the motorcycle suspension game for almost 20 years, since 1998 when owner Jesse Jurrens introduced the first air suspension for Softails. Regular readers may remember last year we reviewed their Revo A coil spring shocks. We wrote in the review how impressed we were with the ride quality and control the shocks gave us over stock, riding 2 up, the rear of the bike feels almost like it is floating. You still feel bigger bumps, but hard hits and bottoming out are a thing of the past. This time Legend sent us a set of their Axeo monotube fork cartridges. We installed them on the same 2014 HD Ultra Limited as the Revo A shocks. I can’t start the review without mentioning how much putting great shocks on the rear will highlight the weaknesses of the stock forks. The Axeo cartridges, like their shocks, are extremely well made, cnc machined and anodized black, they come well packed for shipping. They are packaged with a quart of Maxima fork oil and top out springs. Installation is pretty straight forward but I wouldn’t attempt it without the proper service manual for your bike, you may need a couple of tools you don’t already have so check your service manual. If you have ever had your fork legs in your hands it’s not that difficult, it may take a little longer if you haven’t but if you service your bike and have a jack or a lift and can get your wheels off the ground you can install these pretty easily, or have them installed at one of our advertisers shops. Remove your forks per your service manual, remove the internals, clean the tubes and replace the seals and bushings if needed. Then you adjust the preload on the cartridges for your weight and riding style, add the proper amount of oil from the chart on the instruction sheet, bleed the air from the system so that the hydraulic bump stops work properly, install the cartridges per the supplied instructions then reinstall the forks according to the service manual. I found the preload adjustment chart on the instructions to be spot on for me. Like the shocks, there is a break-in period. After about 500 miles the springs settled in and the preload is perfect. The ride quality is so much better than stock it’s hard to describe. Little things like riding over tar strips on the road I could feel the bars vibrating with the stock forks, with the Axeo I can’t even feel them. You can feel bigger bumps but you never get a hard jolt. They are a dual chamber system, the first chamber is filled with oil and the valve moving through the oil handles small and medium bumps, the second chamber is pressurized nitrogen and smooths the biggest hits. Brake dive is almost nonexistent but the forks aren’t stiff, firmer than stock but in a good way. The real benefit to me is the handling. The front tire feels more directly connected to the handlebars because the monotubes make the fork legs less flexible, so your handlebar inputs seem more precise and changing directions is quicker, and because the forks don’t squat as much in curves you have a little more lean angle before the floorboards start to scrape. The tire doesn’t skip when you are pushing hard into curves so traction is better. Legend says that 80% of comfort comes from the shocks, and 80% of performance comes from the forks. That has to be pretty close, I won’t say they make a 900 pound touring bike handle like a sport bike, but they do make a 900 pound touring bike handle way better than one with stock fork internals. The Revo A shocks and the Axeo forks together, set up for our bike and weight, give us a much more comfortable, better performing, better handling, smoother riding and safer bike. Legend Axeo forks are available for Trikes from 14 to present, Dynas from 06 and up, and touring bikes from 97 to present in stock length and 1 inch lower for most bikes. The 17 and up cartridges retain the stock dual bending valve from the newer forks, and they recently introduced a fork specifically for touring bikes with 23 inch front wheels. You can get them from our advertisers, both dealers and independent retailers that order from Drag Specialties. December 2017

Bullet Points SITUATIONAL AWARENESS

ello fellow bikers! By the time you read this month’s Bullet Points you will have enjoyed Thanksgiving, had a chance to go shopping on Black Friday and have watched November sail into the past. I hope you have had the opportunity to do some autumn riding, as it will not be long before riding without heated gear will be difficult. I have been writing Bullet Points for nearly two years. Over the past 20 articles we have explored a lot of topics which have spanned a significant amount of ground: from politics to guns to defending yourself in a self-defense case. If you are reading this, you are most likely are a defender of our Second Amendment. You may even conceal carry a handgun when you leave the house. If so, congratulations on taking your safety, and the safety of your family and friends seriously. We all know that the best defense against a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. But do not fall into the same trap many people do: that carrying a handgun makes you “bullet-proof.” It simply does not. In fact, if you have become lazy because of that gun on your hip, you may be in more danger than an unarmed citizen who is very vigilant. Vigilance is the key to your safety and those with you – and vigilance starts with situational awareness. According to Wikipedia, Situational Awareness is defined as: “…the perception of environmental elements and events with respect to time or space, the comprehension of their meaning, and the projection of their status after some variable has changed, such as time, or some other variable, such as a predetermined event.” And while situational awareness is a key component to riding a motorcycle safely - Eg. Is that car approaching from the side road going to run the stop sign and pull out in front of me? – many riders leave their situational awareness with their helmets when they climb off their scoot. In other words, they become unaware of everything going on around themselves. Increasing your situational awareness starts with PAYING ATTENTION! Pay attention to everything going on around you. If you are like many people, that smart phone you are self-absorbed in is putting you at risk. Do not walk around in public with all of your attention focused on your social media networks. I have walked up to friends who are on their iPhone and greeted them several times before they were even aware I was there. That same person will never be able to defend against an attack by a thug if they are only paying attention to liking their friends’ Facebook posts. It would be helpful to look at the way a thug intent on doing harm thinks. First, you must think of these people as being like a tiger which is stalking their next meal. Like that tiger, they purposely scope out the

December 2017

weakest animal in a pack before they spring forward to attack. Shitbag thugs do the same thing. If they are going to commit an armed robbery they will look for the softest of targets – that person least likely to defend themselves when they spring forward to attack. Perhaps it’s that person peering intently into their smartphone. Perhaps it’s that person walking along the dark sidewalk talking to their girlfriend on the phone. Or perhaps it’s that person in the restaurant sitting with their back to everyone else. These are their easiest targets - those who due to their total lack of situational awareness have left themselves the most vulnerable - and least likely to be able to fight back. Even if they are packing a concealed handgun, they will be unable to act quickly enough to use it in their defense – and may even have their gun taken away from them and used against them. Here are some suggestions which will help you increase your situational awareness: Avoid dangerous areas – Do not put yourself into a situation where you will be more likely to have to defend yourself. Remove your smartphone from your consciousness when you are in a public place. It is okay, even preferable, to have it with you, but your attention should not be focused on it. If you are walking into your corner gas station put your phone in your pocket. Look around the establishment before you enter. Is it well lit? How many people are in there? Are there any people who look dangerous? (Yes, it is okay for you to profile people.) What can you use for a barrier if the proverbial “shit-hits-the-fan.” Where are the exits? Have you examined the people present well enough to describe them for a police report? If not, you are not situationally aware of your surroundings. Do not sit where you have blind spots. Avoid sitting with your back to everyone else in that restaurant. I personally like to find a corner table and have my back to the corner. Events change and you need to change with them. Closely examine newcomers entering the restaurant, pub or gas station. Most importantly remove anything which can become a distraction. The more you practice situational awareness, the easier it becomes. Be aware of the people around you. Be aware of the structure you are in. Search out exits. Scan faces. Stay away from dark areas where you can easily be ambushed. Do not ever become the prey because your concentration is elsewhere. Until next month, ride safe and enjoy your family and friends this holiday season! Molon Labe, Mike Noirot

Christmas is for the kids and I hope you all have plenty of them around this time of year as they are what makes Christmas magical. Be sure to support Toy Runs and help anyone in need that you can. And most important don’t forget the reason for the season. Hope y’all enjoy these various photos, both new and old that people have sent me the last year for a potential article. BIKE OF THE MONTH

2003 VICTORY V92TC

Congratulations to Toby Cheeseman on winning our monthly Bike Contest on Facebook! Hey I’m Toby Cheeseman and my wife Georgianna and I were looking on the internet for a different bike when we found this beauty, a 2003 Victory V92TC touring bike. It was very dusty and dirty, but we still traded our H-D Sportster for this amazing bike and are very happy with the trade. We got it home and started cleaning it up and adding somethings, although it had a lot when we acquired it. It has a 92ci Freedom motor. Inside, Andrews cams, timing wheel, Weisco fuel stand-alone manager, stage one chip, and fuel injected. It has 14 inch apes, extended cables, cruise control, after market mirrors, Mustang seat (driver and passenger), Mustang back rest, tour pack we just recently bought, after market handle bar grips with the addition on the end for wrist throttle. It has a stage one exhaust which is good for 125 horsepower and at 110 hp this bike is a beast as it puts power down with the 160 back tire and belt drive. It also has great suspension by Fox. This Victory has become my favorite bike, even over my Harley Ultra Classic. It has more room, more power and is just an awesome bike. We’re adding the batwing fairing with stereo and 4 5.25 speakers which we’re fitting now. We let my best friend Patrick Hayes ride it and he totally fell in love, he said it was the best riding bike he’s ever ridden. The Victory is a great bike. The only thing I’ve found I didn’t like on the bike is the intake adapter. It cracks and makes the Victory V92TC run lean. I talked with Kevin Cross of southernmotorworx. com and Eric Powell of vicbaggers.com, both are Victory gurus and they informed me about this issue so I switched the intake adapter. I would like to thank my mother, Melody Poorman and a friend, Clinton Jackson for this win and all who voted. Clinton Jackson is a great guy I met on the Victory Motorcycle Owners Group on Facebook. My mother told me to enter my bike, she said, “Toby just try it, I’d love to see it win and you’ll probably win and if you do I want a copy to laminate and hang on my wall”. She was so excited, so with her saying this and she has stage 4 cancer, I had to enter and win for her and that’s exactly what happened. The Lord showered her with happiness with this win. I would like to thank Thunder Roads Magazine of Tennessee for having such a great contest for all of us bike owners, it means a lot to all of us, SO THANK YOU! If you have a cool custom bike you would like to have featured in our magazine, enter it in our monthly contest by submitting a pic of your bike to ThunderRoadsTn@gmail.com December 2017

2017 HITMAKERS AND HARLEYS Darryl Worley and Friends

O

At Bumpus H-D Murfreesboro

n October 11th, Darryl Worley and three of his songwriter friends held an informal concert at Bumpus Harley in Murfreesboro. A sellout crowd of about 250 people enjoyed the event, as the songwriters alternated performing their hit songs. All proceeds went to the Darryl Worley Foundation, which serves the needs of Hardin and McNairy Counties, as well as the surrounding areas of West Tennessee and Northwestern Alabama, including the Darryl Worley Cancer Center, the Leader In Me Project, and services for drug addicts and their families, as well as individuals in need. Countrywide, the foundation supports St. Jude’s Research Hospital, LeBonheur Children’s Hospital, and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. There was also a silent auction, with items bringing premium prices, including: Martin Acoustic DGRS Guitar, hand written lyrics, day in Lynchburg (with a tour for 4 by Master Distiller, Jeff Arnett, lunch at Miss Mary Bobo’s, and a signed barrel), songwriter’s Caribbean 5 day cruise, custom H-D fire pit and grill, 4 person Pickwick cruise with Worley, during 2018 TN River Run, 5 Diamond Candles (each containing a ring), and three Jack Daniels bottles, etched for the event, for a total of $17, 825, just from the auction.

December 2017

Worley performed some of his hits, including: I miss My Friend, Lonely Alone, Livin’ the Dream and brought the room to their feet with Have You Forgotten. Terry McBride, of McBride and the Ride, performed some of his hits including: Sacred Ground, Play Something Country, Ride, Baby, Ride, and Cowgirls Don’t Cry. Bruce Long joined in with: Nothin’ on But the Radio, Heartache on the Dancefloor, Like a Cowboy, Anything Goes When Everything’s Gone, and Shadow Dancing on the Wall. Doug Johnson performed hits including: Livin’ in the Moment, Three Wooden Crosses on the Highway, Say a Prayer for Peace, and Love Like Crazy. Grand Ole Opry star Jan Howard was a surprise guest in the audience. As usual, the audience (and the performers) had a great time. The Jackson Bumpus dealership held a similar event. Worley’s major fundraiser each year is the Tennessee River Run held in August, with events like bike and boat poker runs, golf matches, bass fishing tournament, 5 k run, and of course a concert with Worley and friends. Be sure to check with the Bumpus dealerships about next year’s events. Info on the River Run will be on the tnriverrun.org website. Thanks to the entertainers and the Bumpus dealerships for helping those in need. Also, thanks to Buster’s Catering for a great meal. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper

Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: In case I don’t see you at the end of the month – Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!! For those of us who are concerned about the communist insurgency that is more in the open from the media, Hollywood, the usual suspect politicians and all the America haters who walk around Washington with their hands out, it’s hard to set all of that to the side and remember it is the season of giving, love and family. However, I’m going to avoid looking for deals on ammo, a custom holster for my bike or rendering the finger salute until after the first of the year. I feel it is my duty to do my small part in helping to engender the spirit of the holidays. So…. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all you Veterans and American Patriots, especially those who ride bikes! For those who don’t fit in those categories, may you find true happiness moving to a communist dictatorship country where you can be shot for saying anything derogatory about the political elite, enjoy your daily bowl of rice and work on perfecting how you patch your one worn shirt and pair of pants. Oh - and picking the pebbles from between your toes as you tread the dirt roads barefoot. It must be a point of sadness for those with communist and socialist hearts going through our very capitalist holiday season. Companies and corporations making and selling those many things we give as gifts and making a profit while they are doing it. It surely infuriates them that the employees of those companies and corporations are not being paid by the government. Families having bountiful meals, drinking egg nog and giving expressions of love in the form of presents! I’m sure the libs would prefer that all gifts are labeled for holiday use only and any mention of the birth of Christ or Christmas would bring charges. After all any belief people have that competes with government must be banned!!! You know it feels really good that I’m not going to get on a tangent like that about communists and socialists during the season of Christmas and brotherly love. When I was a kid there was something very magical about Christmas lights on houses and the smell of evergreen in

December 2017

the living room from the Christmas tree. The anticipation of Santa coming down the chimney or picking the lock on the front door when we didn’t have a chimney. He’s one very talented delivery guy you know. We always left cookies and either milk or Coca Cola for him and it was always gone on Christmas morning. It was so hard to fall asleep on Christmas Eve and deal with the excitement of getting up and seeing the wonder of presents under the tree. It’s those memories that move me every year to do a toy run and make a donation to one of the many organizations that distribute food and presents so every child and family can share in the wonder of Christmas. It’s especially important to those children who have communist headed parents. They need to know that factory work is optional and not a requirement and that faith in God is above dependency on government…. but I’m not getting into that!! If you have had a good year or been blessed in some way, remember those who may not have had the same blessings (not highlighting those who voted for Hillary). Maybe you can find a little something to put in a Salvation Army kettle or help one of those angels on a tree. I’m sure many of you have ridden a toy run already or have done something special for a family member or someone you know who needs encouragement to take a step forward. If not, see if you can find a way. It’s not what we receive but what we give that makes a difference. Put down the cell phone and actually look someone in the eye, give them a hug and tell them Merry Christmas this year. Remember our veterans too. The holidays are hard for some Veterans. 20+ veterans commit suicide every day, even during the holidays. Letting a veteran know he or she is appreciated, valuable and loved may just be the difference that helps them step up and keep going. You are the light that can show the way for others. We all like to think we are here for a purpose but that purpose may be as simple as inspiring someone else to greatness. Let’s dash through the snow!!!! Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)

FIRST TWIN PEAKS CASE GOES TO TRIAL IN WACO HUNG JURY FORCES MISTRIAL IN FIRST WACO CASE It’s been over two years since the bloody Twin Peaks melee in Waco, Texas, and the first trial of more than 150 of those arrested and charged has ended in a mistrial when the jury was hopelessly split on multiple counts. Dallas Bandidos leader Jake Carrizal was charged with three criminal counts, including murder and racketeering, stemming from the May 17, 2015 brawl and gunfight with rival Cossacks members during a meeting of the Texas Confederation of Clubs and Independents that left nine bikers dead and 18 seriously injured, most shot by responding police. The prosecution had hoped a conviction in this first “big test case,” considered the state’s strongest, would serve as an indicator of how solid the government’s cases might be going forward, and could be used to generate plea deals amongst the remaining 153 bikers indicted, explained A.I.M. (Aid to Injured Motorcyclists) Attorney Bill Smith of Texas. Smith, who also serves as legal counsel for the Confederations of Clubs (COC) in Texas, gave a much-anticipated update to bikers from across the U.S. during a recent National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) Regional Meeting in Oklahoma City. Carrizal faces life in prison if found guilty, but following more than a month of testimony in proceedings that cost the Waco community over $2 million to date, the three woman, nine man jury deliberated for just under 15 hours over two days before notifying Judge Matt Johnson they were irrevocably deadlocked and unable to reach a verdict. Judge Johnson sent the jury home on Friday, November 10, and declared a mistrial. The State has reportedly announced they will retry the case, but at this point it is unclear if the case will be retried on the same or amended charges, or how it will affect others under indictment. “Just by attending a regularly scheduled monthly meeting, many of these bikers lost their jobs, lost their motorcycles, lost homes, or lost custody of a child because of their arrest for engaging in criminal activity,” said Attorney Smith, “spending days, weeks or months in jail under million dollar bail bonds.” In early 2016, several of the bikers filed a civil rights lawsuit against the District Attorney, the Chief of Police and other Waco officials, and “if acquitted, they can succeed in civil action.” BIKERS ASSIST DISASTER VICTIMS U.S. Defenders and the Facilitators at Camp Ironhorse have been deeply involved not only in assisting Hurricane Harvey Disaster relief efforts in Texas, but also in traveling to Puerto Rico for disaster relief aid following Hurricane Maria. “Texas Defenders and Camp Ironhorse volunteers alternate every other week delivering supplies and support equipment,” reports NCOM board member 30

Tiger Mike Revere, Liaison for the Oklahoma Confederation of Clubs. “Multiple agencies in our area have donated to support efforts which benefit our fellow Americans victimized by the storms and enhance a Positive Biker Image.” A critical need continues, so anyone interested in providing any support or donations, assisting in Relief Efforts, or desiring more information can contact Monte “Stick” Keiner at: wizzardproduction@yahoo.com. NCOM Christian Unity also continues to be very responsive in meeting Disaster Victims’ needs, as updated at the recent Region 2 Conference in Oklahoma. “They are working with an effort led by Central Harley-Davidson out of Austin TX,” reports Revere, “and the assistance they provided is much appreciated by our awesome Motorcycling Community.” For more information or to contribute, contact Louie Nobs, NCOM Christian Unity Liaison, at ncom.christianunity@gmail.com. BIKING PASTOR SHEPHERDS TEXAS CHURCH, SITE OF MASSACRE Pastor Frank Pomeroy oversees the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, where a crazed gunman opened fire on Sunday, November 5th and slaughtered 26 people, one unborn, and injured 20 others inside the church. “Rev. Pomeroy, a motorcycle enthusiast, also runs a ministry for bikers,” and the following information was submitted to NCOM Biker Newsbytes by Becky Cakes, recipient of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists’ 2013 NCOM Silver Spoke Award for Media. The First Baptist Church has a YouTube Channel where it posts videos of worship services and events, and in the last sermon posted online, Rev. Pomeroy -- the church’s motorcycle-riding pastor -- used the imagery of a Harley-Davidson to illustrate his theme for the service, entitled “You Don’t Need Training Wheels, You Need Christ!” Ms. Cakes continues her post; “The pastor brought his bike into church last Sunday, set it in front of the altar and used it as a metaphor. It was safer, he said, to lean into turns on the bike, even though it felt less safe, a lesson he was trying to teach his daughter Annabelle Pomeroy, 14, on the ride there that morning, when it was only 34 degrees. “We had a beautiful ride,” he said. “She was back there cuddled behind me, and when I pointed at the temperature gauge, I felt her snuggle in even tighter.” Annabelle was shot and killed on Sunday. Mr. Pomeroy and his wife, Sherri, were out of the state. …” (Excerpted from The Wall Street Journal, www.wsj.com).

U.S. INTERIOR DEPT CREATES RECREATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE On November 7, 2017, Secretary of Interior Ryan Zinke announced the creation of a Recreation Advisory Committee to help improve visitor experiences on America’s public lands and waters through expanded public-private partnerships. “We used to have a Bureau of Recreation – we’re bringing recreation back,” Zinke said, adding that “I look forward to hearing from the best and the brightest in our private sector on how to improve the public experience on our

federal lands and waters by expanding access for all Americans.” According to the Outdoor Industry Association, outdoor recreation generates $887 billion in economic impact and supports 7.6 million jobs across the country. “The creation of the Recreation Advisory Committee – combined with meetings, declarations and events – is an important step in harnessing the might of the outdoor recreation economy and shows the department’s commitment to supporting its continued growth,” reports the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) in announcing the formation of the committee. The committee will offer new opportunities for experienced and committed supporters of the Great Outdoors to collaborate with the secretary and other Interior officials on a range of issues, including expansion of world-class visitor services and infrastructure, skillful management of peak visitation, improving fee collection, incorporating new technologies and much more. This action is the result of numerous meetings between the Department of the Interior, the Outdoor Recreation Industry Roundtable (ORIR), of which the MIC is a member, and others. “Creation of the Recreation Advisory Committee is great news for the outdoor recreation industry,” said MIC president and CEO Tim Buche. “We are excited to work with the Department of Interior to address issues facing outdoor recreation, including trail maintenance and expanding access to public lands.” NEW YORK TO REQUIRE MOTORCYCLE SAFETY SAVVY BEFORE LICENSURE Those seeking a drivers license in the state of New York will soon be required to take and pass a series of Motorcycle Safety scenarios. A7486/S2119, signed into law on October 23, 2017 by Governor Andrew Cuomo, establishes a motorcycle safety awareness component as a requirement for licensing. Introduced by Assemblyman Marcos Crespo (D-S Bronx), the legislation creates a “Motorcycle Safety” component to licensure, and requires “The commissioner to provide in the pre-licensing course, a mandatory component in “Motorcycle Safety” awareness educaDecember 2017

tion as a prerequisite for obtaining a license to operate a motor vehicle. The purpose of the component is to educate prospective licensees on the potential dangers to persons operating motorcycles on the roadway.” So “Motorcycle Safety” will now join alcohol and drug education, “Road Rage” awareness and “Work Safety Zone Safety” as subject matters for the pre-licensing course. FRAUDULENT MOTORCYCLE ENDORSEMENT DOCUMENTS IN INDIANA “It has come to our attention that some Indiana residents have been caught up in a scam regarding documents necessary to obtain a motorcycle endorsement,” reports Jay Jackson of ABATE of Indiana (www.abateonline.org), which “represents all Hoosier motorcyclists and is very concerned anytime one of us is harmed.” Although details from the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) are incomplete, “it appears that someone has made copies of the state form used to issue a waiver for skills test and forged the signature of a former ABATE instructor. This unlawful act of greed casts an ugly and undeserved shadow on the instructor’s reputation, as well as that of ABATE of Indiana.” Jackson related stories of people caught up in this situation, with some paying money for these documents or attending and “passing” makeshift classes. If the BMV is unable to confirm that the applicant had successfully completed a legitimate rider course, “they suspend not only the motorcycle endorsement, but also the operator’s license, and in some cases the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), of the individual.” If you have any information related to this situation, please reach out and contact the Indiana State Police, or call the ABATE office at (317) 422-8040 (Indiana residents call (800) 23-ABATE). “We want to get to the bottom of this in hopes that it may assist those that were victimized.” QUOTABLE QUOTE: “People Make Choices. RIDER SAFETY

THE SEASON FOR SAFETY

A

s you gather around the Christmas tree this year to exchange gifts with your favorite people, the best presents for your friends and family that ride motorcycles can often be those for comfort and safety. From boots to helmets, heated jackets and gloves, the options are limitless.

So, let’s start at the top (of our heads that is). We frequently take our helmets for granted. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation states in the Basic RiderCourse that “a head injury is the primary cause of death for riders”. With proper helmet use (a helmet with DOT or SNELL compliance), brain injury can be reduced 67% and the risk of death decreases by 37%. Most helmet manufacturers recommend replacing your helmet every 3 to 5 years. And, it only takes a drop of 3 feet to compromise the integrity of your helmet. Helmets not only provide that vital protection for your head, they have become very cool within designer graphics, HUD display (Heads-upDisplay) and Bluetooth integration. To keep that new helmet safe from theft, a helmet lock could make a great stocking stuffer.

Donna and Kim with Santa

It’s only a matter of time before you get a beetle or gravel that makes a path to your face. Protect those pretty eyes with an impact-resistant face shield or goggles. It’s always nice to have a clear set of riding glasses for cloudy days and night riding. And, they fit great in the stocking! For the rider that rides year round, one of my favorite Christmas gifts has been a pair of heated gloves. They are powered either by batteries or a pigtail (a wire directly to your battery) and have different settings for keeping those fingers and hands toasty warm. Heated gear like jackets, pants and socks are also wonderful to have for cold weather riding. Along with those heated socks, a nice pair of waterproof boots makes a great gift. Seriously, can you have too many pairs of boots? A cold rider is a distracted rider. Having cold weather gear not only protects your body from the cold, it can also reduce risk from being distracted. One of my “never leave home without it” items is a neck gaiter. Whether fleece for riding in the cold months, or a cotton neck gaiter in spring or fall, keeping your neck warm helps keep the body’s core warm. When the core temperature begins to drop, hypothermia is a possibility. Hypothermia causes slower reactions and a lack of concentration. Dressing in layers is good preparation for different weather conditions. Thermal-base layer shirts can be used to prevent the loss of body heat. Another item to keep skin protected from cold air is a windproof outer jacket. Most vehicle drivers say they just don’t see motorcyclists. Help December 2017

them out by wearing a high visibility vest. A recent study found that motorcyclists wearing high visibility colors like neon yellow and orange are 37% less likely to be involved in an accident. It’s always nice to be prepared just in case you should meet Santa on one of your rides. If you’re dreaming of a new motorcycle, you’ll want to tell him all about it. Remember, safe riding starts with you. Wishing you a very happy and safe Christmas. Donna, along with being an avid riding enthusiast, is a MSF motorcycle safety coach for the state of Tennessee and a HarleyDavidson Riding Academy Coach. She is a member of the Motor Maids, H.O.G. and Ladies of Harley.

A 72 year old guy takes this beautiful 24 year old young woman out to Christmas Eve dinner. They had a great time at dinner and are walking through the mall and he spots a jewelry store and they walk inside. He tells the Rep working there that this is one very special lady and he would like to buy her a very special ring. So the Rep shows him a very nice ring that cost $5,000. The older guy said no she is very, very special and needs a very, very special ring. So the Rep goes to another case and he pulls out a ring and said “I have this ring but it cost $40,000”. The older guy says “let’s see it”. The young ladies eyes light up when she puts it on her hand and she is smiling ear to ear. The older guy says “that is perfect we’ll take it”. He explained he only had a check and that it was 8pm so Rep couldn’t call the bank to verify the funds. “Can you take my check and hold the ring until Monday? Once the bank opens you cash the check and then call us and we will come pick up the ring”. The Rep says “great I will hold it until Monday”. Well Monday morning the Rep calls the bank only to find out the old guy doesn’t have enough to cash a $400. check let alone a $40,000. one. So the jeweler calls the old guy yelling to him but about the check. The old guy just said, “hold on, let me tell you about my wet n’ wild weekend”!!!. -------------------------------------------------------------A Police Officer pulls over a speeding car on Christmas Eve. The officer says, “I clocked you at 80 miles per hour, sir.” The driver says, “Goodness, officer, I had it on cruise control at 60; perhaps your radar gun needs calibrating.” Not looking up from her knitting the wife says: ‘Now don’t be silly, dear, you know that this car doesn’t have cruise control”. As the officer writes out the ticket, the driver looks over at his wife and growls, “Can’t you please keep your mouth shut for once?” The wife smiles demurely and says, “Well dear you should be thankful your radar detector went off when it did or your speed would have been higher.” As the officer makes out the second ticket for the illegal radar detector unit , the man glowers at his wife and says through clenched teeth, “Woman, can’t you keep your mouth shut, ever”? The officer frowns and says, ‘And I notice that you’re not wearing your seat belt, sir. That’s an automatic $75 fine”. The driver says, ‘Yeah, well, you see, officer, I had it on, but I took it off when you pulled me over so that I could get my license out of my back pocket”. (cont’d.) 40

The wife says, “Now, dear, you know very well that you didn’t have your seat belt on. You never wear your seat belt when you’re driving.” And as the police officer is writing out the third ticket, the driver turns to his wife and barks,“Will you just shut the hell up?” The officer looks over at the woman and asks, “Does your husband always talk to you this way, Ma’am?” The wife looks at the officer with eyes round and innocent and replies; “Only when he’s been drinking way too much.” --------------------------------------------------------------On the farm lived a chicken and a horse, both of whom loved to play together. One day the two were playing when the horse fell into a bog and began to sink. Scared for his life, the horse whinnied for the chicken to go get the farmer for help! Off the chicken ran, back to the farm. Arriving at the farm, he searched and searched for the farmer, but to no avail, for the farmer had gone to town with the only tractor. Running around, the chicken spied the farmer’s new Harley. Finding the keys in the ignition, the chicken sped off with a length of rope hoping he still had time to save his friend’s life. After tying the other end to the rear bumper of the farmer’s bike, the chicken then drove slowly forward and, with the aid of the powerful bike, rescued the horse! Happy and proud, the chicken rode the Harley back to the farmhouse, and the farmer was none the wiser when he returned. The friendship between the two animals was cemented: Best Buddies, Best Pals. A few weeks later, the chicken fell into a mud pit, and soon, he too, began to sink and cried out to the horse to save his life! The horse thought a moment, walked over, and straddled the large puddle. Looking underneath, he told the chicken to grab his hangy-down thingy and he would then lift him out of the pit. The chicken got a good grip, and the horse pulled him up and out, saving his life. The moral of the story? (yep, you betcha’, there is a moral!) “When You’re Hung Like A Horse, You Don’t Need A Harley To Pick Up Chicks”. --------------------------------------------------------------Lil’ Johnny was really antsy and wanting to leave for Christmas break. The Teacher was asking questions and all who answered correctly were allowed to leave early. The room was emptying quickly and Lil’ Johnny was getting really antsy and also mad. The teacher asked another question and little Amy, Marie and Sally all raised their hands and knew the answer. The Teacher let them all go early. Little Johnny was truly pissed off. He mumbled “damn, I wish these bitches would keep their mouths shut”. The teacher whirled around and said, “Who said that?” Lil’ Johnny yelled out “Harvey Weinstein”, and flew out the door.
