“The Love of Grace” God’s love is so much different from man’s love. God’s love will “never Leave you nor forsake you.” God’s love is not based on your goodness, your sins, or the color of your skin. Man’s love is based on Legalism, needs & wants. Man has watered down the word “Love” so badly that we claim to love a big mac and French fries. God’s love is based on His Grace towards you. Rom.8:31 “If God be for me, who can be against me?” The word “If” is referring to “if you’re truly born again” then: “God is for me” and if God Himself is for you, “who can be against me.” Only God can take what the devil meant to kill you with and turn it into your good. If the economy goes bad, “God is for me.” If healthcare goes down, “God is for me.” These things are not stronger than God, “who can be against me.” Vs.32 “He that spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for us.”

“Sin is the issue of legalism and “Love is the issue of Grace.” Whatever you focus on is the direction you’ll go. Rom.4:15 “Because the law worketh wrath.” Rom.5:20 “Moreover the law entered that offence (sin) might abound.” If the law is the main focus in your life, then you’ll walk in sin and wrath. If God’s Grace is the main issue in your life, then you’ll walk in His love and power. His love will give you the strength not to sin. If your focus in on “the thou shall nots” then you’ll end up doing what you didn’t want to Vs.35 “Who can separate us from the love of Christ.” do. Rom.7:15 “For that which I do I allow not: for what I Vs.39 “nothing can separate us from the love of God.” would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. If He gave up His Son for us then He will not withhold anything from us. Religion and legalism wants us to focus Vs.24 “O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me on “how much we love God,” but the Grace of God wants from this body of death?” If we are focused on Grace, us to focus on “how much God loves us!” Your love for instead of the “thou shall nots” we’ll be focused on the God and your goodness are not what saved your soul; “I Choose not.” Religion keeps trying to make the Law your activities in the Church did not save your soul. The the solution to sin, but in fact, the law is the reason for Grace & love of God through Jesus Christ is what saved sin, Rom.5:20 your soul. When you have made a mistake, that’s not The devil has no defense against those that know that the time to run from God but run to Him. Legalism and God loves them regardless of their faults. Temptation is the devil’s biggest tool is to convince us that God doesn’t not possible when you know you are “God’s beloved.” All love us anymore. We think that when we do wrong that the times you felt rejected and unloved were when you God stops loving us, then we rebel against God and go fell back into sin. Rom.6:14-17 “For sin shall not have deeper into sin. In Matt.3:17 God spoke audibly “This is dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Then in under Grace. Matt.4:1-3 “Then Jesus was led into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil…and the devil said; If thou be Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your the Son of God?” Notice that the devil left out the phrase kickstand up. “My beloved Son”, the first thing the devil will do is to convince us that we are not “God’s beloved.” To be found faithful, Pastor Ron February 2015

SUPER SIMPLE STEAK FETTUCINI ALFREDO for VALENTINE LOVERS 1 Bottle of Prepared Fettuccini Alfredo Sauce 1 Package of Fettuccini Noodles or Standard Egg Noodles; your choice 1 Extra Large Flank Steak or 1 Large Filet Mignon 1/2 Stick of Real Butter 1 Tbls. of Parsley 1/4 tsp. of Nutmeg Take your flank steak or (1) large Filet Mignon and grill it on an indoor grill pan if you have it. You can pan-fry it in a cast iron skillet also on medium. Keep and eye on it though as you don’t want to ruin an expensive cut of meat like Filet Mignon. If your local grocery doesn’t carry Flank Steak, which is a very inexpensive, but very flavorful (with very little fat), then ask them if they’ll cut it for you. If you ask the Butcher at any grocery they will almost always try to please their customer. I always marinate my steak w/ salt & pepper, each side, then mustard rubbed into it, then Worcestershire sauce on top. Do both sides and let sit for at least 1/2 hour to get the flavor in. Do not pierce your meat as that releases precious juices when cooking. After you’ve cooked your steak, place on a plate and just let it rest for a solid 10 minutes to allow the juices to draw back into it, then if it’s Flank Steak, slice it against the grain (if unsure, look online and see how this is done). But if you just look close as to how the lines are running on the steak, turn the steak and slice the opposite of how the lines are running. If slicing your Filet Mignon, slice extremely thin slices, slice thinly on Flank Steak also. Once sliced, just set aside. Pour your bottle of Alfredo sauce into a medium saucepan and just let it simmer on medium-low. Add your dash of Nutmeg. Get your water for pasta boiling. Be sure and salt pasta water generously. When pasta is cooked to your likeness, drain and put in a big pasta bowl along with 1/2 stick of butter and Tablespoon of Parsley. Mix well. Now add your Alfredo sauce and mix well. Add the steak slices last and just blend gently. Sprinkle your fave Italian cheese on top for extra taste. Pour the wine, toast each other and enjoy with hot, crusty bread and butter. Devine!

SO EASY STUFFED MUSHROOMS 10 Larger Sized White Mushroom Caps; just pull out the stem for filling 1 Can of Premium, Pure White Crab Meat or Fresh from your Deli if they have it 1 Group of Scallions 1 Cup of Real Mayonnaise 2 Tbls. of Lime Juice Salt & Pepper to Taste 1/2 Cup of Shredded Swiss Cheese In a small glass bowl place in your clean, white crab meat. Mince about 3 stalks (whitish green part only) of your scallions. Mince them fine. Salt & Pepper to Taste. Add Lime Juice. Add your Mayonnaise and blend gently. Crab is such a delicate meat, you really don’t want to overpower the taste of it. Now many people stuff their raw “shrooms”, add the filling and bake. This, to me, produces a rubbery tasting mushroom. I always saute’ mine in quality margarine first to get them golden brown. Turn upside down on a paper towel to drain thoroughly. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Now, take a cap and spoon a generous amount of filling into it. Finish them all and place on a flat oven pan lined with aluminum foil for easy clean-up. Cook for apprx. 15 minutes as you’re really only heating up crab mix. Remove from oven and sprinkle Swiss shredded cheese generously all over the top and place back in oven for just a minute to melt cheese completely. These are totally scrumptious! MOUTH WATERING RED VELVET CUPCAKES w CREAM CHEESE & BUTTER CREAM FROSTING Someday I’ll give you the homemade long version, but you’re going to be so busy getting in your sexy lingerie, let’s keep it REALLY SIMPLE! 1 Box of Red Velvet Cake; prepare per directions Prepare cupcake tins & bake as directed. Take 1 Tub of Cream Cheese Frosting and 1 Tub of Butter Cream Frosting. Mix together thoroughly. Pile that frosting up high on those cooled cupcakes. Pour some Asti-Spumonti’ or Champagne, put on slow, sexy music and make his/her night. Whew! Gettin’ Hot Up In Here. Oh, Yeah Baby!

BIKE OF THE MONTH

1974 Honda CB750 Four CONGRATULATIONS to Chad Venable on winning our 1st Monthly Bike Contest! This is what Chad had to say about his bike… My bike is a 1974 Honda CB750 Four with a 836 big bore kit on a Santee frame with a 12” over girder frontend. The purple is all powder coated candy purple with a platinum silver base coat and diamond dust clear by Gary Gentry at A & A Powder Coating in Millersville TN. Custom machine work done by my friends at Confederate Customs Speed Shop. The bike was built in my living room by my wife Angela my good friend Daryl Butler owner of Home Town Auto & Cycle Repair in Ramer TN and myself. I have always been a fan of the CB750 choppers, but I just love choppers of any kind. Out of all my bikes, this is my favorite that I have now. Honda choppers, triumph choppers, and Harley-Davidson choppers, it’s just something I enjoy doing in my spare time with my wife who is a big supporter of my hobby. I do ride this bike, but its home is in my man cave inside my house, not out in the cold garage with the others.

Take it to the Range:

EnTRy LEvEL AR’s AR platform rifles have become all the rage in recent years, and it’s easy to understand why. They are extremely versatile, completely customizable, semi-automatic rifles that are just plain fun to shoot. Whether you’re looking for a new hunting gun, a plinker in .22 long rifle, a varmint gun, or just something to shoot at the range, an AR rifle can meet your needs. With all the manufacturers that exist, however, it can be challenging to decide which rifle is the best for you, while still fitting your budget. Several prominent manufacturers boast less expensive rifles. One fancy frill that none of these rifles have is a chrome lined barrel, which is a coating they use to additionally protect against corrosion while out in the field for military use. Rest assured, most firearms do not have chrome lined barrels, and as long as you use quality ammunition and perform routine maintenance on your rifle, it is not something you will ever miss.

Del-Ton® is a little known company here in Michigan, but they are gaining in popularity day by day. Their model is the DT Sport, and $707.00 is the MSRP on this rifle. Offering the same perks as the majority of the other rifles, this lightweight model has a dust cover and forward assist, and is only lacking a rear sight, so you will have to purchase one that suits you. This gun can boast something that the others cannot, however: Both the upper and lower receivers are mil-spec. Additionally, this company offers something that none of the others do – a complete online breakdown of the different types of metals that go into all the different parts. No matter which you choose, these companies all make high quality AR platform rifles, and all are made here in the USA. Whether you’re new to the shooting sports, or simply new to the AR platform, one of these rifles will offer considerable fun on the range.

Smith & Wesson® makes the M&P 15 Sport, which is a baseline version of their AR platform. Whereas the standard M&P 15 ranks in at $1,249.00 MSRP, the M&P 15 Sport boasts a mere $739.00 MSRP. The standard M&P 15 has all the bells and whistles, including a chrome lined barrel, and adjustable front and rear sights with removable carry handle. The Sport is lacking the carry handle with adjustable rear sight, forward assist, and dust cover. As long as you won’t miss the carry handle, the forward assist and dust cover are typically deemed unnecessary for general range conditions. Ruger® has recently come out with their own version of an entry level AR platform rifle – the AR 556. While the SR 556 is a dual piston driven system hitting the books at $2049.00 MSRP, its little brother is gas operated, and will cost you a mere $749.00 MSRP. While a piston driven AR is a dream to shoot and smooth as butter, the truth is that a gas block system is what many people choose to purchase, and when chambered in 5.56mm, does not have much perceived recoil at all. An added perk – this beauty comes equipped with a dust cover and forward assist. While this model is still new, it is already high in demand, as Ruger makes quality firearms. Bushmaster® has long had in production the Carbon-15 model, but has recently made some changes, which ultimately has produced a higher quality rifle. At the top of this price comparison, the Carbon-15 runs $865.86 MSRP, and many of their other AR platform rifles are tagged $1200-1300.00 MSRP. The Carbon-15 gives you the choice of two models at that price point, the M4 Quad Rail or the ORC with Red Dot Sight. This versatility allows you to choose the sight option that works best for you, without having to compromise to reach a lower price point. Both models sport the composite receiver and aluminum upper that were the claim to fame for the Carbon-15, making it incredibly lightweight.

CINNAMON- Ok – so we have to be honest, Cinnamon is a bit of a nut job. She won’t walk on a leash. She twirls more like a tornado and likes to run around like a crazy woman. That said, Cinnamon is a beautiful brindle girl. She’s very young, just over a year old. She’s friendly and active and looking for a friendly and active family to match her carefree and cheery personality. Her perfect home will be with adults and older children with a fenced yard. Someone who will play chase and fetch and, who knows, eventually teach her to walk like a lady on a leash. She likes other dogs but is a little cautious around cats. If you have other pets, especially cats, a slow, careful introduction will be best to insure that they become friends for life! She is spayed and has all of her shots. Cinnamon is heartworm positive so you will need to consult your vet about the best treatment for Cinnamon to ensure she lives a long and happy life. REESE is a big bundle of PLAY and he’s looking for a fun, active family! He is about 3 years old, so he’s at the perfect age! Calm enough for some training sessions and still young enough for serious play time! His perfect home will be with adults and older children. Being the bouncy boy that he is, Reese might be a bit too excitable for very young children and accidentally knock them down even though he means well. Reese gets along well with other dogs but please bring your dog into the shelter so we can make sure it’s the perfect match! Reese has not been tested with cats but we’ll be happy to see how he does if you’d like. He has been neutered and has had all of his shots. Reese is light heartworm positive so you’ll need to seek advice from your vet about how to best treat his condition so he has the longest, happiest life ever! SILVERADO was a big hit in the Christmas parade! He loved every child along the parade route! This big, strong boy is about a year and a half old and has no sense of personal space. He definitely wants to be in your lap! He’s Heartworm Negative, Neutered, and Happy as can be. BIGGS is a 7month boy that has not had the best of times. He came to animal control thin, hungry, and sad in some of the coldest weather this year. He’s improved greatly. He would be best with a big family. He loves other dogs, is heartworm negative, neutered, and friendly. He is ok with cats, but needs to be introduced. FORREST And you thought Forrest Gump was a little goofy? Wait until you meet our Forrest! Forrest is a 9 month old Lab/Doberman (?) mix boy and GOOFY should be his middle name. He is full of puppy energy and has no respect for your personal space. He is totally pushy with the hugs and kisses, but he means well. If you need some goofy in your life, come meet Forrest! Heartworm Negative, Neutered, and ACTIVE CHARLENE started out as CHARLIE! This poor girl was a box kitty through and through. After getting her fixed (and discovering that she is a she), she started to come out of her shell AND HER BOX. Finally, this sweet, docile girl is ready for a home of her own. She’s 1.5 yrs., spayed, and sweet. She needs a quiet home. MARMALADE is a sweet girl that was never really a house cat. Born of a litter of barn cats, she didn’t know human contact, other than “The Feeders”, until she came to the shelter. She’s come a long way from frightened kitten and is ready for her own place. She needs a home with quiet. She does like cats and some dogs. She’s spayed. She’s just looking for her chance.

THUNDER ROADS TENNESSEE is proud to announce, this spring, we will be introducing a state-wide, summer long riding challenge hitting great destinations and events across the state.

The 2015 Tennessee Thunder Run! It’s a riding contest unlike any you have ever seen, and features great prizes every month!

HOW IT WORKS

Each month, Thunder Roads Tennessee will announce a list of Tennessee Thunder Run Ride Stops. These stops are selected based on recommendations of our readers, and confirmed by our editors. Some of the Ride Stops, will be designated Registration stops. Riders can stop by any registration stop and pick up a card, register it so we can contact winners and you are ready to go. You only have to give your contact info once when you register your card, then you can go to any ride stop location in the state and “check in” just by presenting your card at each location. Once a rider has “checked-in” at a stop – their card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads Tennessee will also randomly select rider check-ins from across the state for special prizes and incentives. Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads Tennessee and our sponsors and will include some very exciting prizes. They may include riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, and many others. This is a contest about riding. The beauty, and simplicity of the program is that anyone can win, with any check-in, but your 14

chances of winning increase the more you ride! The dedicated rider, crisscrossing the state has a greater chance of winning, but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the drawing for that Ride Stop, and also the state wide drawings each month, so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride, the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea, to encourage everyone to get out and ride!

STATE AND STOP PRIZES

Every month the Thunder Roads Tennessee staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop, and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of April. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!

ThunderRoadsTennessee.com

February 2015

THE WINNERS

If your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads Tennessee will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. • Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in. • Some prize drawings are specific to only check-ins for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from checkin’s season long. • ALL CHECK-INS remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (MondaySunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses).

BONUS CHECK-INS!

The 2015 Tennessee Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accommodate riders or particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads Tennessee as part of the Stop Listing.

IT’S REALLY THAT SIMPLE!

1. Get your Thunder Roads Tennessee “Ride n’ Win” Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Tennessee Magazine, our website (ThunderRoadsTennessee. com), or our Facebook page 3. Ride out to the listed stops and show them your card. 4. And then you could win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Tennessee Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards. Thunder Roads Tennessee will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Smoky Mountain Thunder Memorial Ride, or Bike Nights will have special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering their cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards. The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Tennessee Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads Tennessee will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your Tennessee RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as February 2015

well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. As with the magazine itself, the Tennessee Thunder Run is presented through the support of our sponsors and partners all across the state. We have secured several key sponsorships already, but opportunities remain. If your business would like to get involved, this is a great way to promote yourself all across the state in a positive manner. Even if your organization is not a riding destination you might become a sponsor for the tremendous promotional value it offers through the constant media attention it will receive. Obviously this will be a heavy focus within the magazine but we are also working with radio and other media outlets to help spread awareness of the run. Sponsors are able to tap into this network and enjoy great exposure. The 2015 Tennessee Thunder Run will begin in April, with all necessary information and additional details in each month’s issue of Thunder Roads Tennessee. We will also have a complete listing on our website – ThunderRoadsTennessee. com and our Facebook pages. We will include a listing of registration stops – including a wide variety of events in April; including Bike Nights, Bike Blessings, and rides. The RIDE kicks off in April! GET READY! As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at TennesseeThunderRun@gmail.com

5 UNDENIABLE FACTS 1. WE ALL LOVE TO SPEND MONEY BUYING NEW CLOTHES BUT WE NEVER REALIZE THAT THE BEST MOMENTS IN LIFE ARE ENJOYED WITHOUT CLOTHES. 2. HAVING A COLD DRINK ON HOT DAY WITH A FEW FRIENDS IS NICE, BUT HAVING A HOT FRIEND ON A COLD NIGHT AFTER A FEW DRINKS – PRICELESS! 3. BREAKING NEWS: CONDOMS DON’T GUARANTEE SAFE SEX ANYMORE. A FRIEND OF MINE WAS WEARING ONE WHEN HE WAS SHOT DEAD BY THE WOMAN’S HUSBAND. 4. ARGUING OVER A GIRL’S BUST SIZE IS LIKE CHOOSING BETWEEN MOLSON, HEINEKEN, CARLSBERG, & BUDWEISER. MEN MAY STATE THEIR PREFERENCES, BUT WILL GRAB WHATEVER IS AVAILABLE. 5. I HAVEN’T VERIFIED THIS ON “SNOPES”, BUT IT SOUNDS LEGIT. A RECENT STUDY FOUND THAT WOMEN WHO CARRY A LITTLE EXTRA WEIGHT LIVE LONGER THAN THE MEN WHO MENTION IT. ____________________________________________________ A young New York woman was so depressed that one night she decided to end her life by throwing herself into the ocean. Just before she could leap from the docks, a handsome young man stopped her. “You have so much to live for,” said the man. “I’m a sailor, and we leave for Italy tomorrow. I can stow you away on my ship. I’ll take care of you, bring you food every day, and keep you happy. With nothing to lose, and having always wanted to go to Italy, the young woman accepted. From then on, every night he would bring her sandwiches and a bottle of red wine and he would make love to her for hours. A week later, the captain discovered her during a routine inspection. “What are you doing here?” he asked. “I have an arrangement with one of the sailors,” she replied. “He brings me food and I get a free trip to Italy .” “I see,” said the captain. Her conscience got the better of her and she added, “Plus, he’s screwing me.” “He certainly is,” replied the captain.” This is the Staten Island Ferry.” ____________________________________________________ Biker after a bad crash! It was late in the night when he regained consciousness. He found himself in agonizing pain in the hospital’s ICU, with tubes up his nose, wires monitoring every function and a gorgeous nurse hovering over him. In only a few moments, he realized he’d obviously been in a serious traffic accident. The lovely nurse gave him a deep look straight into his eyes and he heard her slowly say, “Temporarily, you may not feel anything from the waist down.” Somehow he managed to mumble in reply; “Well…just let me feel your boobs, then?” 16

An attorney arrived home late, after a very tough day trying to get a stay of execution. His last minute plea for clemency to the governor had failed and he was feeling worn out and depressed... As soon as he walked through the door at home, his wife started on him about, ‘What time of night to be getting home is this? Where have you been? ‘Dinner is cold and I’m not reheating it.’ And on and on and on. Too shattered to play his usual role in this familiar ritual, he poured himself a shot of whiskey and headed off for a long hot soak in the bathtub, pursued by the predictable sarcastic remarks as he dragged himself up the stairs. While he was in the bath, the phone rang. The wife answered and was told that her husband’s client, James Wright, had been granted a stay of execution after all. Wright would not be hanged tonight. Finally realizing what a terrible day he must have had and feeling bad for nagging on him the second he came through the door, she decided to go upstairs and give him the good news. As she opened the bathroom door, she was greeted by the sight of her husband, bent over naked, drying his legs and feet. ‘They’re not hanging Wright tonight,’ she said. He whirled around and screamed at his wife; ‘For the love of God woman, don’t you ever stop complaining!?” ____________________________________________________ During her physical examination, a doctor asked a middle-aged woman about her physical activity level. The woman said she spent 3 days a week, every week in the outdoors. Doc asked her to elaborate. “Well, yesterday afternoon was typical; I took a five hour walk about 7 miles through some pretty rough terrain. I waded along the edge of a lake. I pushed my way through 2 miles of brambles. I got sand in my shoes and my eyes. I barely avoided stepping on a snake. I climbed several rocky hills. I went to the bathroom behind some big trees. I ran away from an irate mother bear and then ran away from one angry Bull Elk. The mental stress of it all left me shattered. At the end of it all I drank a scotch and three glasses of wine. Amazed by the story, the doctor said, “You must be one hell of an outdoor woman!” “No,” the woman replied,” I’m just a really, really lame-ass golfer”. ____________________________________________________

Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: Do bikers have a monogamous bad boy or girl image to live up to and fulfill? We’re all referred to as “Bikers” but what does that really mean? When I was a kid and someone talked about motorcycles I got a vision of Marlon Brando and Lee Marvin riding stripped down motorcycles through small rural towns, drinking beer and raising hell with the locals until the law shows up and runs them off. I imagine there are many people who still get that image when they see black leather on two wheels roaring down the highway. Kind of a save the children and hide the beer reaction. While there are still bikers who live that life there are many who ride today who don’t look at riding as a rough and tumble intermediate step to jail. Many “Bikers” today live a middle-class suit and tie/soccer-mom life and are part timers who suit up to become bikers on their days off. Do we benefit or suffer from the bad ass biker image? Maybe an even bigger question is do we care? I believe there is a down side to the improved suburban biker persona promoted by Harley and the other cruiser manufacturers. They see profits. You know, trying to make us accepted and respected by society so folks who can afford to spend $30 to $40 thousand dollars will dance on the showroom floor. While this makes for lots of motorcycle sales you have to admit that it does detract from the mean ass image that bikers have garnished since World War II. Many who live or have lived the real biker life are veterans. Mostly men, who went to war, saw death first hand and grew an attitude based in fighting for your life. A certain amount of “I don’t care about the consequences” came along with it. They were adrenalin junkies who needed to feel the edge of life and weren’t really happy unless they could feel the risk. Hard to believe but for some, having death close enough you reach out and touch it is a comfort. Many were prickly no back up types who were quick to reach out and touch someone over a transgression. The result was a give it hell image that produced a mix of respect, fear, reticence and avoidance by those who cherished the normal life and safety. The bike and

February 2015

black leather sent a “don’t tread on me” message that was easily understood. The police used to understand the message and just assumed those with leather and two wheels were hoods up to no good and leaned extra hard on them to make sure they didn’t get too much momentum. Okay, so fast forward to today! Bikers have become respectable, the cops like us because we respect them, support charities and present a positive image in most situations and communities. People see bikes and black leather today and what pops to mind is patriotism and grass roots Americans. The biker mystique still engenders respect and I think to some extent todays bikers benefit from the public not knowing if a bikers is a one percenter or a banker. Having said all that I find many drivers on the road look at us as cones in the road that mark a slalom course. They see our two wheels and know they have four so they think their car is a bulldozer made to move bikers out of their way. No respect and no fear factor just an aggressive get the hell out of my way attitude. So how do we cultivate the bad boy persona in a way that makes riding the highways safer for us? Riding in groups can help. I’ve always heard there is safety in numbers. We could hit the weight room to show more muscle and maybe practice mean looks in the mirror. Standing with other bikers and backing them up is good if they aren’t going psycho on the innocent. I don’t claim to have all the answers and will have to be satisfied to encourage innovation and creativity. Something to consider is that the only way someone will think they might get their ass kicked for messing with you is if you kicked someone’s ass once for messing with you. I’m not saying to go downtown and start punching people out for street creds. Opportunity will knock on occasion and give you a moment of decision. I don’t mean stuff like your kids pull in the car on long trips. “Mom, Billy’s looking at me.” If you are going to give or draw blood for the good of biker mankind it ought to be over something important. Remember; “It doesn’t matter who wins or loses as long as someone gets hurt!” See you at the Easy Rider show! Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those can’t. Bag Lady Sue

T

hunder Roads Colorado recently had the opportunity to interview Suzanne Austin AKA Bag Lady Sue. Sue is a comedienne living here in Colorado that has performed all over the country, from motorcycle rallies to the 4Queens in Las Vegas, NV.

full time and to step up and make that happen—and she did. Sue began to get her name out there more, doing the footwork of talking to the owners of bars and other venues and working tirelessly to make comedy her livelihood. She began playing bars, nightclubs, rallies and events becoming a more seasoned and successful comedienne in the process. Some of the comedians that inspired her are Carol Burnett, Sam Kinnison, Robin Williams, Bette Middler, and Andrew Dice Clay. Sue has been around motorcycles for a long time. When she was a young and working as a stripper in Pennsylvania, she bought her first bike, a Honda Rebel. The guys she worked with used to prank her by putting rice and Chow Mein noodles in and on the bike. She says that she feels a connection to the biker community because “We ride because are looking for that family, we club up and buddy up because we need families.” Bikers aren’t afraid to stand up for what they believe in.

We caught up with her a few hours before a show in Denver to talk to her a little about what she does, why she does it and how it all began. If you haven’t seen Sue perform it is truly a sight to see. Generally she enters dressed as a bag lady (hence the name Bag Lady Sue) and her show begins. Sue is a fantastic comedienne with great timing and an understanding of comedy that is refreshing and, to be frank, quite raunchy. She has a no holds barred style and an energy that is palpable and she keeps you on the edge of your seat in laughter. Her comedy career started some years ago as a bit of a dare. At that time she was working as a stripper and her mom bet her that she couldn’t/wouldn’t be able to pull off a performance that started with her as a bag lady. She made $250 in 15 minutes and an act was born.

“The puppet from Bag Lady Sue’s performances is painted on her 1981 Sportster”

After that first night performance starting as a bag lady, she began to perform more and more. She entered a contest to turn an ordinary person into a comedian and came in third and continued to perform. Audiences find her hilarious with her blend of bawdy humor and a penchant for improvisation that gets both her and her audiences riled up and laughing hysterically. Sue performed comedy part time along with more mundane work to support herself and raise her daughter for quite some time. After losing her mundane job as a bartender the week before Christmas one year, she decided that it was time to pursue her comedy on more of a full time basis and make it work. (Who fires someone a week before Christmas?!) She talks about this as when she decided to be a comedienne 22

Sue spends a great deal of time and energy performing for charitable events, in particular those that benefit our soldiers. She started giving back to our troops after a letter that was sent to her from a brief encounter in Montana.

“Hello Suzanne, back in 2010 at the Broken Spoke campground while standing there watching Eddie Money, wearing my Veteran colors a lovely wavy haired blond walked up, put her hand on my shoulder and said thank you. I looked at her and asked, for? She responded you’re a veteran. Eddie Money was singing his tribute song Another Ones Coming Home and I was standing in the dark crying quietly, alone. If I failed to get it out that night you are most welcome. I was pretty distracted, I had every intention of doing something pretty drastic after that final trip. Thank you for appreciating an old soldier. The only reason I had a clue who you were afterwards was because you were booked across the road at the Drag Pipe saloon and I had previously ridden to Red Lodge, MT to ride the Bear tooth run and

see your show. I have thought about telling you many times since but I just listened to that song again and had a minute. Still riding. Thanks, Scott” Her charity called “Cup of Joe for a Joe” sends a letter and a fresh cup of coffee to one service member. It is small acts like this that mean so much to those who serve our country. She is a big believer in getting off your butt and doing something. It is all well and good to complain and bitch about things that are happening in the world but you have to get off you backside and do something if you want things to change and Sue is definitely a go out and do something kind of woman. She recently went back to college to be able to share the experience with her daughter. She is devoted to her daughter and even set up the rental of a Lamborghini for her daughter’s 21st birthday in Las Vegas. During the interview, Sue (or Bags as she asked us to call her) had us both in stitches. We enjoyed chatting with her about her comedy, discussing different issues and sharing our life experiences. The next time you get a chance, see Bags here in Denver at one of her performances, at a rally or event somewhere else in America, you will not be disappointed. She is a wonderful and entergetic performer that puts on a show that is well worth seeing. Plus, she is an active member of the motorcycle community here in Colorado, what more could you ask for? Want to know where to see Bag Lady Sue? Check out her website for the list of upcoming performances. Performances are added to the website frequently so if there isn’t an upcoming show easy for you to attend, there will be soon. The AMA Pro Hillclimb season will see some exciting changes in 2015, including a brand new venue to kick off the fresh campaign. The season will begin May 30, when riders head south to Tennessee and the Buffalo Valley Hillclimb at Middle Tennessee Dragway. The venue will offer a new experience for participants and fans, alike. The race will coincide with the Tennessee State HOG (Harley Owners’ Group) Rally, promising the area’s first taste of AMA Pro Hillclimb will be steeped in excitement. The next two rounds will see the series return to Pennsylvania. On June 7, White Rose Motorcycle Club in Spring Grove, Pa. plays host to the series. The hill was redesigned prior to the 2014 event, and returned to its original layout, much to the excitement of riders and fans, who appreciate the balance of speed and air it provides. On June 14, AMA Pro Hillclimb will go to Freemansburg, Pa., to be hosted by the Bushkill Valley Motorcycle Club, which also made improvements to the hill to further challenge riders. Round 4, slated for June 17, will see the series move to Canaan, N.H., where Ridge Runner Promotions will host the All Star Challenge during the renowned Laconia Bike Week. Sticking to tradition, the race will be held on a Wednesday. Year-after-year, fans come from Laconia to Canaan to witness, first-hand, the thrilling nitromethane-fueled action as part of their time at the rally. Ogemaw Hills Bike Week in West Branch, Mich., will be kicked off by AMA Pro Hillclimb’s Round 5 on July 19. The new schedule arrangement will allow both events to prosper with bike week activities moved back. After a small break, the series rolls back to Pennsylvania’s Bushkill Valley Motorcycle Club on Sept. 13. It’s a return to the event’s original date, the second Sunday in September. The second stop of the year at the White Rose Motorcycle Club comes Sept. 27, and that event will be held in conjunction with the White Rose Thunder Rally and Harley-Davidson open house held in nearby York, Pa. The on-hill action provides plenty of entertainment for enthusiasts in town for the rally. The series will once again wrap up its schedule and crown its champions at The Staircase at the Dayton Motorcycle Club in Oregonia, Ohio on Oct. 11 in an event with plenty of tradition. By: Rebel Ron I really enjoy sharing these brief glimpses into our fellow Tennessee biker’s lives with this article. It allows me to meet some very cool, unique, & fun lifelong riders all across the beautiful Volunteer State. Meet “Hawg Head” & “Hawg Head’s ol’ Lady” this month! Some people seem to destined to be together, Mary & Jerry Primm are a good example. They have shared the last 33 years of their lives together but they have shared the joy of riding longer. Both began riding as young kids like many of us did where we learned to ride on a small bike, then one bigger, & bigger till you get a Street bike. And a Harley Davidson seems to have been a goal of many riders. Mary Harris’ brothers had a Honda 125 which would start her life’s two wheel adventure with. She rode other bikes after that but in 1988 she bought her first Harley Davidson. A 1984 Lowrider & she still rides it today!! Hawg Head’s Ol’ Lady has put some miles on the bike but she just recently had S & G Custom Cycles rebuild the Shovelhead motor & more for the 2015 riding season. Jerry is another example of a younger sibling taking advantage of older brother’s possessions. When the big brothers were not home Jerry put many miles on their Honda 50. He also rode various other bikes until he got his first Harley in 1984. It was a customized 1972 Harley Davidson FL that he still owned until a couple years ago. (Sometimes life’s problems force us to sell our bikes but the desire to ride seldom leaves us.) In 1982 Jerry & Mary met while cruising the Dickson downtown hanging out with friends & such. They apparently got along very well because they married in 1983. They live in Cumberland Furnace today & still enjoy having their knees in the breeze after more than three decades together. This happy biker couple plan to ride to Sturgis this year. We wish y’all a safe trip & hope you enjoy even more years together. If you know anyone who’d like to be featured in this article please let me know. You can email me at celticgranda2@yahoo. com, call me a 931-374-8368, or stop by S & G Custom Cycles to talk to me. Happy New Year to you all & let’s ride!!!!!

W

e were talking to Mike and Troy Fuqua at FTD Customs, who are helping sponsor the upcoming Tennessee Thunder Run, by letting us give away a set of their very cool custom wheels, and we wondered what it takes to make their wheels. We asked, so they invited us up to see the process start to finish. FTD Customs, manufactures Custom wheels for motorcycles, they are a Tennessee company, located in Hendersonville, just north of Nashville. They also make swing arm extensions for sport bikes, and matching brake rotors for most of their wheel designs. Their custom wheels start life on a computer, actually, that’s not exactly true, first the design’s come from someone’s imagination, and THEN it’s designed on a computer, with software that the CNC machines can use. They layout the design and tweak it until it’s perfect. When they are happy with it, they put it on a disk and take it to the CNC machines. The wheel blanks come in by the pallet load, and the proper blank is chosen for the wheel design, then it’s put in the machine. After the wheel is clamped down, the operator has to index the blank in the machine so it will know exactly where it is, so it can start cutting in the right place. When the

operator has it all set up, and he’s happy with the numbers on the screen, he pushes a button and shuts the doors and the machine takes over. Cutting fluid starts spraying, and the drill bits and cutting tools go to work. The machine chooses the tools to drill the holes for the hubs, then it drills pilot holes for the cutters to start cutting out the designs. The cutters then rough cut the design into the blank. It’s not a quick process, and there is not much to do while it’s running, so while the machine was cutting on the wheel, Mike took me across the shop to another machine that he uses to make the hubs for the wheels.

For the hubs, they start with a billet, and machine it to fit the wheels, then holes are drilled for axles and tapped, to bolt it to the wheel, and for rotors, and pulleys or sprockets for rear 28

ThunderRoadsTennessee.com

February 2015

Back to the wheel machine, once it’s finished with the rough cut, it selects a finishing bit, to smooth out the marks left from the rough cut tools and it’s finished. Now the wheel can be sent out for chrome plating, or left raw for painting. When all of the parts are done, the hubs are bolted through the wheels, torqued, and are ready for tires and rotors. You can also get FTD Customs wheels powder

coated in just about any color imaginable. They also install wheels and tires and even put out about 20 bike builds a year. You can find them at all of the major rallys and events, and check out all of their products on their website, ftdcustoms. com or give them a call at 615-824-2811

wheels. Then it is machined to accept bearings for the axles. Rotors are machined in another part of the shop, they are machined from blanks like the wheels. Like the wheels and hubs, they can be sent out for chrome plating after machining, or machined from a powder coated blank for the black contrast series, or powder coated after machining for the blackout series.

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) MINNESOTA ANTI-PROFILING MEASURE INTRODUCED A proposed anti-profiling bill before the Minnesota House would create rules to reduce perceived profiling of motorcycle riders and would require several law enforcement groups to draft anti-profiling practices when dealing with the riders. Once drafted, law enforcement agencies would then have to train every officer and verify that with the state. House File 59, “Motorcycle Profiling,” was filed on January 12, 2015 in the state House of Representatives and referred to the Public Safety and Crime Prevention Policy and Finance Committee, and the bill stems from claims that police have been pulling over motorcyclists without reasonable cause: “Purpose. The legislature finds that the reality or public perception of motorcycle profiling alienates people from police, hinders community policing efforts, and causes law enforcement to lose credibility and trust among the people law enforcement is sworn to protect and serve. No stop initiated by a peace officer should be made without a legitimate reason; the fact that someone rides a motorcycle or wears motorcycle paraphernalia is not a legitimate reason. Law enforcement policies and training programs must emphasize the need to respect the balance between the rights of all persons to be free from unreasonable governmental intrusions and law enforcement’s need to enforce the law.” The measure defines “motorcycle profiling” as “(T)he illegal use of the fact that a person rides a motorcycle or wears motorcycle-related accouterments as a factor in deciding to stop and question, take enforcement action, arrest, or search a person or vehicle with or without a legal basis under the United States Constitution or Minnesota Constitution.” HF 59 is co-sponsored by Rep. John Petersburg (R-Waseca) who said that he signed on to the bill in part because he heard claims of profiling on the campaign trail. In October, he attended a forum hosted by American Bikers for Awareness, Training and Education, or ABATE. “Because they’re riding motorcycles and wearing motorcycle gear, they’re getting stopped,” Petersburg said. A representative for ABATE of Minnesota told the Owatonna People’s Press that an anti-profiling bill was among the group’s top legislative priorities. Minnesota was the first and only state in the country to enact a biker anti-discrimination law; Minnesota Statute Section 604.12, enacted in 1998 states in part: “A place of public accommodation may not restrict access, admission, or usage to a person solely because the person operates a motorcycle or is wearing clothing that displays the name of an organization or association.”

S.C. BILL AIMS TO REQUIRE CHILD SAFETY SEATS AND BELTS ON MOTORCYCLES A bill that would require babies and small children to be secured to a motorcycle with seat belts is under consideration by South Carolina lawmakers. 32

S.C. state Rep. Joseph Daning (R-Berkely Co.) filed legislation (H. 3040) that would require a standard, rear-facing child safety seat to be used for motorcycle passengers from birth up to 1 year of age, and for a belt-positioning booster seat with both lap and shoulder belts for children younger than 7 and weighing 40-80 pounds. “We take care of our children in cars, but they’re so unprotected on the back of motorcycles” said Daning, who added that the bill was prompted by constituents who feared an ex-spouse would ride their children on a motorcycle. Rep. Bill Taylor called Daning’s proposal “government overreach” and said motorcyclists are a safety-conscious community, but child-safety advocates support Daning’s efforts. Only a handful of states impose a minimum age for riders, and South Carolina is not one of them according to the Children’s Trust of South Carolina, pointing out that 25 children required emergency medical attention due to motorcycle injuries in the state from 2007 through 2009. ABATE of SC state coordinator, Ralph Bell, emphasized that there have been no fatalities of passengers under 7, and said changing the law would hinder charity events. Dennis Welborn, the state legislative coordinator for ABATE told the Morris News Service that “Its passage would cause much more harm than good,” and in particular, mounting a child safety seat on a motorcycle would change its center of gravity, making it unwieldy, affecting its handling and braking abilities. MSF CONTRACTED TO MANAGE INDIANA MOTORCYCLIST SAFETY PROGRAM The Motorcycle Safety Foundation has been awarded a four-year contract by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles to provide motorcycle training, beginning March 1, 2015. The contract award marks the end of the state’s training relationship with ABATE of Indiana, which had been training riders since the 1970s. According to Jay Jackson, ABATE executive director, more than 125,000 students completed its courses during that time. The ABATE board of directors voted not to renew its contract. The MSF will oversee Indiana’s statewide training locations, provide an Indiana-dedicated website and online class enrollment function and administer all aspects of training, including MSF’s extensive quality control program. Indiana law requires would-be motorcycle riders to first obtain a learner’s permit, and then pass a motorcycle skills test or present a certificate of completion from a BMV-approved motorcycle safety course. After March 1, Hoosiers who pass the MSF Basic RiderCourse will not need to take Indiana’s oncycle skills exam. “We’d like to recognize ABATE of Indiana for their achievements in providing motorcycle training over the past several years through the state’s network of training sites and trainers,” said MSF Vice President Robert Gladden. More than 7.5 million riders internationally have completed motorcycle training using MSF’s curricula in the foundation’s 40-plus year history.

VEHICLE DATA PRIVACY CONCERNS VOICED IN MONTANA A Montana House panel recently heard a bill to give vehicle owners more control over the large stores of information now accumulated by newer cars and trucks, and motorcycles. House Bill 78, sponsored by Rep. Ryan Lynch (D-Butte), would give vehicle owners more control of that data by codifying provisions stating that only owners, lessees and authorized representatives can gain access to recorded data in the event of a crash. Insurance companies already make use of telemetrics -- the many pieces of data that reflect driving habits -- but insurance lobbyists say they’re willing to sit down with supporters and hammer out a bill that’s agreeable to everyone. This is just one of several privacy bills the Montana Legislature will consider this session and, if enacted, the law would become the nation’s strongest driver-privacy act.

senators in the new 114th Congress. The bill would prohibit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration from issuing grants to states to fund motorcycle-only checkpoints. Sponsoring senators say such roadblocks are discriminatory, where riders are specifically targeted by police to check that their vehicles meet state standards for noise, handlebar height, tire condition and other requirements, including helmet compliance. The states of California, Louisiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Illinois, New Hampshire and Virginia have all passed legislation to prohibit motorcycle-only checkpoints.

MOTORCYCLE INJURIES & FATALITIES ON DECLINE The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced that motorcycle fatalities have dropped for the second year in a row, representing the largest drop in fatalities for any road user. According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System, motorcycle fatalities for 2013 dropped from 4,986 to 4,668; and the 6.4% decrease was the largest percentage drop of all vehicle categories. Fatal motorcycle crashes involving alcohol dropped by 117 deaths, or 8.3%, also the largest decrease in the category. NHTSA also reported a drop in the number of injured motorcyclists from 93,000 to 88,000, a 5.4% drop, again the largest decrease in the category. Motor vehicle fatalities overall decreased by 3.1% from 20122013 and injuries declined 2.1%.

WEIRD NEWS: YOUTUBE VIDEO LEADS TO STUNT RIDER ARREST A cop couldn’t corral dozens of reckless riders who took over a California highway, performing dangerous stunts and taunting the officer, but the marauders left an obvious trail on social media. One stunter, armed with cameras mounted on the front of his motorcycle and helmet, filmed what turned out to be incriminating evidence that later led to his arrest. The video, posted to YouTube and garnering over 1.5 million views, shows several brazen bikers popping high speed wheelies and buzzing a California Highway Patrolman, who is also on a motorcycle and attempting to pull over one or more riders before giving up due to safety concerns. As the officer backs off, bikers are seen exuberantly pumping their fists in the air in a short-lived victory celebration. Three weeks later, following an internet trail including personal information posted in social forums, police busted the 32-year old stunt rider who recorded -- and shared -- video of the wild ride and arrested him at his house in Brentwood on felony accessory and obstruction charges, as well as a marijuana grow operation in his home.

FEDERAL LEGISLATION REINTRODUCED TO CURB MOTORCYCLE-ONLY CHECKPOINTS Motorcycle-only checkpoints would be discouraged under a bipartisan bill reintroduced January 8, 2015 by a group of
