February 2017

It’s that time of year again - Valentine’s Day. That day we do something a little extra for our loved ones and don’t forget your true other love! No headaches, no fuss, just bike specific stuff and you’ll be safe every time. Check with our advertisers, some are offering sweet deals the month of February, like marked down preowned bikes, service specials, discounts on parts and apparel, and much more. You can find something for everyone you love! Have we had an unseasonably warm winter so far or what?! I hope you’ve been taking advantage of the warmer days and riding as much as you can because it may not last long. We’ll see what Punxsutawney Phil has to say about it on Ground Hog Day, February 2nd. According to the tradition, if Phil sees his shadow and returns to his hole, he has predicted six more weeks of winter-like weather. If Phil does not see his shadow, he has predicted an early spring. Will Phil see his shadow or not? I kind of hope he does, I like at least one good snow each winter, one where I can go sledding and build a snowman, I guess I’m still a child at heart. Have you noticed anything different about the magazine? Well, we decided since it was a new year and we changed printers in December, we would also change the looks of the mag a little. Our new printer is amazing and we hope you’ve noticed the much higher quality paper coatings and printing in the magazine. Along with that we wanted to make the magazine easier to read and make the graphics sharper and crisper. We would really appreciate feedback from you, our readers, because after all this magazine is for you. Tell us what you think of the changes or any suggestions you may have at thunderroadstn@gmail.com or send us a message on Facebook. Some of you may know that Smoky Mountain HarleyDavidson lost a valued family member last month, Sean Summerfield. He worked in the parts department but was much more to them than an employee. There is a memorial to Sean in this issue from his Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson family. On a more personal note, every time we walked in the shop Scott walked straight back to talk to Sean, he loved to talk motorcycles with him especially “Scramblers”, his passion for motorcycling was contagious. He loved to remind Scott of the infamous crash in the creek while he was riding with Scott Maddux for a story on the bikes. We at Thunder Roads® Tennessee offer our deepest condolences to Sean’s family and friends, he will be greatly missed but never forgotten. By the time you get this issue we will have been to Easyriders Bike Show in Nashville and had a blast I’m sure, we always do, but you can read all about it in the March issue. Warm wishes for a happy Valentine’s Day. We hope you celebrate it by spending time with the ones you love doing all the things you love to do. Ride Hard Live Free, Denise, Scott & Thunder Dawg

“Runaway Slave” The more I study God’s Word, the more I keep seeing the parallel between the Children of Israel leaving Egypt and the modern day Christians. The Children of Israel were slaves to the Egyptians for 400 years, so after 400 years they had Egyptian attitudes, Egyptian thinking, and Egyptian appetites, while being God’s chosen people. Egypt represents the land of not enough, were we were as slaves to sin. The wilderness represents the land of just enough, where we were when we first got saved into Christianity. The Promise Land represents the land of more than enough, where God wants us to be mature Christians. PS.105:37 “He brought them forth also with silver & gold: and there was not a feeble person among them.” They went from slaves to overnight millionaires, but they had a “Runaway Slave” mentality. When you have never had money the first thing you’ll do is waste it. Exodus 32:2-4 first thing they did was to “cast their gold into the fire and make a golden calf to worship.” They’ll end up spending their money on what they want, then begging for what they need. Freedom can be frightening if you’ve never had it, the ex-con who has been institutionalized, the ex-abused wife who has been divorced, the young adult that has been mistreated all their life, make wrong decisions based on a “Runaway Slave” mentality. “Runaway Slaves” always function as slaves taking on their master’s name: crackhead, drunk, whore, killer, and loser. A “Runaway Slave” is always running from their master, and the master will always chase what he owns! Christians must start to realize their “Sonship with God.” 2Cor.5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a NEW CREATURE: old things have passed away; behold all thing are become new.” “Runaway Slaves” are church jumpers, addicted Christians, backsliders, non-tithers, because they can’t trust God. They rely on their slave mentality rather than their new Sonship with God. In Luke 15:11-32 we read about the “Prodigal Son that wasted his money and ended up in the fields with the pigs, he was in the pig pen, he was eyeball to eyeball with the pigs, he even

February 2017

ate the same food with the pigs.” But he was not a pig, he was the “Prodigal Son,” the key word here is “SON.” Your Egypt may have been a pig pen, you may have lived with the pigs, even ate the food as the pigs, but you are not a pig, you’re a “SON.” The Bible says that “he came to himself,” it’s time you wake up, it’s time you “came to yourself,” nobody came to help him out of the pig pen, so stop waiting for someone to help you. You need to come to yourself and realize you are not the pig, but you’re a child of God, like the Prodigal Son, go home, your heavenly Father is waiting on you, stop being a “Runaway Slave” and walk in your “Sonship.” Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

Bullet Points

H

IF THE UNIMAGINABLE HAPPENS

appy New Year brothers and sisters! 2017 is upon us and I hope each of you have a prosperous and safe year. As I write this month’s column, I find myself thinking a lot about the great times I had riding during the warm months of 2016. Bike nights, poker runs, charity events and several major trips marked my 2016 - and I’m looking forward to a similarly exciting year in 2017. And you can bet, that almost every time I leave my house, I have a pistol concealed somewhere on my person. This is a blessing, as we have the God given right to bear arms, but it is also a tremendous responsibility. This month’s column deals with what to expect if the unimaginable happens - you find yourself in a terrible situation where you need to defend yourself - with your firearm. You may be at home, you may be out on a dinner date or you may be at the gas station filling your bike with high-test gasoline. And things go quickly out of control. You pull your pistol from its holster and command the thug to halt what he’s doing. Maybe he’s pummeling your friend, holding you at knifepoint or charging at you with a pipe. Whatever he’s doing, you are in serious danger. You pull the trigger, hitting the scumbag square in the chest. He’s still coming so you put two more shots into center mass before your assailant goes to the ground. Your life has now changed forever. At this point you need to call 9-1-1 immediately. When the police arrive they will inevitably approach you with their service pistols drawn and command you to the ground. You may will be thinking, “But I’m the good guy.” Unfortunately they have no idea what has happened up to this point. The only thing they know is that there is a guy on the ground and you have a gun. Follow all instructions they give you. Explain that you feared for your life and you commanded the thug to cease what he was doing. You also have to understand that even if you did everything correctly, the police are going to consider you a criminal suspect at this time. Pretty scary, isn’t it? If it can be demonstrated that you acted purely in self-defense, you should have nothing to fear. But what factors are considered by the police, and more importantly, the prosecuting attorney’s office, on whether you are charged as a criminal or are quickly sent home with no threat of criminal prosecution? Innocence Imminence Proportionality Avoidance Reasonableness For each of these five items, you must be able to demonstrate, and prove, that you were in the right. If you fail to prove any single one of them, your argument for self-defense may well fail. The consequences of failure are immense - up to a very long incarceration in prison. This is why I always refer to firearms ownership as an immense responsibility. Over the next several monthly columns, I will elaborate on each of these five components in detail. But here follows a brief summary of each of these

February 2017

critical components to a successful self-defense claim. Innocence: Innocence seems pretty simple and straightforward. You were minding your own business and the scumbag came at you with a knife. But in order to be innocent, you cannot be viewed as the aggressor. More than likely, there will be witnesses to the event. Will they corroborate what you said happened? Were you somewhere you were not legally allowed to be? Did you pursue the altercation? Did you take actions which sustained the incident? Was it a case of mutual combat (legal term)? Did any actions you take cause a small altercation to escalate? Imminence: Simply put, in order for your self-defense claim to be considered there has to be an imminent threat of severe physical harm or death to you or a third party you are protecting. If the dirtbag is 100 feet away from you threatening to beat you up - that would not be considered imminent enough to result in you using deadly force. If he is threatening to go home and get all of his brothers, and come after you, that is not an imminent threat. If he is 18 feet away from you and has a knife pulled - that could well be an imminent threat that would allow you to use lethal force. Proportionality: Proportionality is key to a self-defense claim. If you find yourself in a fist fight with a smaller guy, a proportional reaction would be to fight back with your fists. If you pull your sidearm and shoot the attacker, it would not be a proportional response. However, if you are brutally attacked by a much larger man, and you are laying on your back being pummeled by his huge fists, you may well be able to use your gun to end the attack. Avoidance: Could you have avoided using lethal force? While Tennessee is a “Stand Your Ground” state, could you have simply turned around and headed out the side door? Why allow a situation to deteriorate into a life changing event if it is not necessary? Reasonableness: If the police believe your actions were reasonable, given all of the circumstances, you are most likely going to be cut loose quickly. However, if they have any questions regarding whether your actions were reasonable you may very well find yourself in legal jeopardy. If it escalates to the district attorney, there will be an entire set of litmus tests regarding whether you acted as a reasonable person would have, given all of the circumstances. Next month this column will take a much deeper dive into Innocence. Until then, ride often and ride safely. Molon Labe, Mike Noirot Note: Nothing in this article should be construed as legal advice. IN THE NEWS Polaris Industries to Wind Down Victory Motorcycles Operations Polaris, which owns the brand, is ditching Victory to focus on Indian Motorcycles and its three-wheeled Slingshot. Polaris Industries announced on January 9th that it plans to halt production of Victory Motorcycles. The motorsports firm, which manufactures vehicles as diverse as ATVs, side-by-sides, snowmobiles, and the unique three-wheeled Slingshot, will assist dealers in selling off current Victory inventories and will continue to supply parts for ten years. Polaris says it will honor service and warranty coverage for Victory owners and dealers, too. It would appear that Polaris wants to redirect resources to the Indian Motorcycle brand, which it acquired in 2011 and has experienced significant growth since. In the announcement, Polaris also cited Slingshot as a brand that would benefit from cutting loose Victory, which has “struggled to establish the market share needed to succeed and be profitable.” “Our focus is on profitable growth, and in an environment of finite resources, this move allows us to optimize and align our resources behind both our premium, high performing Indian Motorcycle brand and our innovative Slingshot brand, enhancing our focus on accelerating the success of those brands,” said Polaris Industries Chairman and CEO Scott Wine. “Ultimately this decision will propel the industryleading product innovation that is core to our strategy while fostering long-term growth and increased shareholder value.” The Minnesota-based company started building Victory Motorcycles in 1997, with the first sales in 1998, in an attempt to capitalize on the success of Harley-Davidson and sell heavier, American-manufactured

touring bikes. Since purchasing Indian Motorcycles six years ago, however, Polaris has had another outlet to build big, American baggers and touring bikes—ones that carry an iconic name that is more than a century old. Polaris apparently decided it doesn’t make sense to have two brands producing similar motorcycles, marketed at similar audiences. Source: Polaris Industries

ON THE ROAD

Genuine Gypsy Biker Travels America!

by Rebel Ron

Working at S & G Custom Cycles in Columbia, TN lets me enjoy two things I love. Seeing all kinds of motorcycles and meeting some fantastic people from school teachers who like to live outside the box on the weekend to true American bikers who live by their own rules. Several weeks ago we had a road worn looking fella stop by looking for a few parts for the ratty Panhead that he calls home. A 1960 Harley-Davidson FL powered with the 74” Panhead engine on a 1948 wishbone frame. From the looks of both man and machine I could tell they had racked up some miles. He was talking to the shop owner Sam Goodman about his high mileage hog when it hit me. Could this be the infamous Panhead Billy and his trusty iron horse I had seen photos of in numerous magazines and online biker sites? I remembered him because I was fascinated with Billy’s nomadic existence. This man has literally ridden and lived on this old Harley for the last 34 years!!! Once it was confirmed who graced our presence I had to know the truth. Billy has indeed rode this vintage bike all over America and beyond. He has visited 806 HD dealers, every State capitol, rode along all major waterways including the mighty Mississippi where he rode down one side and up the other. He has visited nearly all battlefields in the country, numerous Indian reservations, historic sites and trails, attended all major bike rallies many of them several times. He runs 800 gallons of gas through this old Panhead every year!!!! That’s impressive!!! And he can prove it with his notebooks, and highlighted 14

maps he keeps about all the places he has ridden to and some people he met along the way. A little about Panhead Billy Burrows past and how he arrived in Mule Town on his hog. He is from Mass. and served in the US military from 1966 to 1970. He got into bikes as a young man who soon became a soldier, got married and had a couple of kids. Fast forward to 1983 when he was divorced. He simply packed his bike for the road and never looked back. He has ridden and lived like a cowboy on his horse ever since. Going and coming as he pleased, with whoever he wanted, doing whatever they liked. A true biker nomad. He wound up here on his way from the Trail of Tears ride after being told S & G would have parts in stock for his vintage scoot. I asked about what he has on the bike. “I carry some tools, primary belts, spark plugs, set of points, and set of brushes for my generator, patch kit for tires, electric air pump, tire irons, tent, sleeping bag, tarp, and I use the tarp more than my tent. I would rather sleep on the tarp on the ground or I make a lean-to if it’s humid.” When asked about the worse thing living on the road Billy said, “I’ve been on the road 34 years straight except for when I got involved in a hit-and-run accident in ’93 in Piedmont, South Dakota. I spent six months in the VA hospital, had several operations and spent a year and a half on crutches. I’ve been on the road ever since though.” Of course I had to ask about the good things of his gypsy lifestyle. He quickly answered, “I’ve been blessed. I get to see some beautiful sites across our country, go to some exciting fun parties, and I get to meet some really fine people. And it’s really gratifying that people remember me. I’m nothing special. Just an ol’ tramp living his dream.” Billy’s parting message to Tennessee riders is this, “I recommend seeing America from behind some handlebars before you get too old. Ride safe and often!” You ride safe too Panhead Billy and I look forward to you stopping by again soon. Maybe we can ride somewhere?

HISTORY

HISTORIC FEM PART I

The following is the first in a four-part series showcasing 12 female riders with historic significance.

T

he 19th Amendment guaranteed Women would receive the same right to vote as men. The era between 1878 and when it was finally ratified in 1920 were tough on women everywhere, but for those who stood up for what they believed in and help prove, reveal or otherwise convince the majority of the citizens of the United States that women kick ass and deserve to have the same rights as men: We want to say thank you. As you read through this brief overview of important women in motorcycle history, some of which were from that early era, it is important to understand that their contributions were often made with little or no support from friends or family. These are women who recognized that being given equal rights meant more than just the right to vote or work, but it also gave them the right to do as they damn well pleased. In the case of the dozen women we will look at in this series, that freedom included riding a motorcycle.

her first motorcycle then teaching herself to ride and handle repairs she got the urge to explore the area surrounding New York. In order to share the experience with her mom, Avis she added a sidecar so that she could participate. Of course it was great fun for both of them and before long the pair had decided on a whim to take a ride to check out the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition…in San Francisco.

Although they didn’t intend to make history, the pair set off from Brooklyn on May 2, 1915 and followed a route that took them through the southernmost United States. For those of you who are familiar with the desert southwest you can imagine how much fun those 120-degreee summer days were as they travelled through states like New Mexico and Arizona. But they were tough cookies and according to the story in HarleyDavidson Dealer’s magazine they even had to shoot their way through marauding rattlesnakes and coyotes along the way. Once they arrived in San Francisco and rode their 11-F right to the shore of the Pacific Ocean they had officially become the first women to cross the United States on any type of motorcycle. Their return trip took them further north through Utah, Illinois and Milwaukee on their way back east. By the time they arrived in Brooklyn in October with 9,000 miles of riding and a surprising amount of fanfare, they had managed to secure a place in the motorcycle history books.

Effie & Avis Hotchkiss Facts: This mother-daughter team were the first female motorcycle riders to successfully complete a transcontinental ride across the United States. In 1915 Effie & Avis Hotchkiss became the first women to ride across the US when they headed west from Brooklyn, New York to San Francisco.… and back again for a total of approximately 9,000 miles. The Hotchkiss women chose a 1915 three-speed 11-F Harley-Davidson with a custom made sidecar built to accommodate the mother Avis, who would be a passenger for the entire journey. The story is that Effie, a professional woman who longed for something more than what the 9-to-5 professional life, decided to quit her job and find herself…so to speak. That is where this adventure begins. After purchasing 16

Adeline & Augusta van Buren Facts: These two sisters were the first women to navigate Pikes Peak on a motorized vehicle of any kind and are often billed as the first women to ride solo motorcycles across the United States. They were inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2002. And Sturgis Hall of Fame in 2003. In 1916 these two affluent sisters from New York set out to prove that women should be used as dispatch riders in the

HISTORY

MALE RIDERS war effort and in order to prove their potential, decided to ride across the United States. Adeline and Augusta came from an active family so it wasn’t a real shock when they showed up on a pair of new Indian Power Plus motorcycles, hell bent on proving women can ride as well as men. Unlike the Hotchkiss women, they were intent on making a point. In order to show they had the moxie and skill to handle the grueling demands of riding bikes long distances, they set out on their own 5,500 mile ride to San Francisco on July 4, 1916. The route took them through Chicago, into Colorado and Utah with many stops both voluntary and involuntary along the way. They faced harsh terrain of the unimproved roads that connected the two coasts in addition to harassment from law enforcement and folks discriminating against them for just being female. According to their Hall of Fame bio they were even arrested for wearing men’s riding clothes on a couple occasions. In Colorado, they made their official mark in the history books by becoming the first women to summit the 14,000 tall Pikes Peak hill climb (just for fun, not in any type of competition). In fact they were the first females to accomplish the task in any type of modern conveyance for that matter. Their three month long transcontinental mission was accomplished on September 2. The fanfare in the media surrounding their effort made the ride seem more like a vacation than a political statement or historical achievement it was intended for. Afterwards, it was no surprise, Adeline’s application to join the military was still rejected, but the point had been made. Women are awesome. While Adeline went on to become a lawyer in NYC, Augusta became a pilot and joined the female flying club called the 99s, which was started by Amelia Earhart. The 99s were considered the inspiration for the Motor Maids MC Club.

Dorothy ‘Dot’ Robinson (Goulding)

Facts: A pioneer for women motorcycle riders, she was the first female to win an AMA event and co-founded Motor Maids Club. Inducted into AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1991. Known as the “First Lady of Motorcycling,” this Australian born AMA Hall of Fame member is the daughter of Jim Goulding, the owner and manufacturer of the famous Goulding Sidecar. The story of her life as a motorcycle rider began before birth when her father hurried her mother, Olive to the hospital in a Goulding sidecar attached to a 1911 Harley-Davidson. In 1923 they relocated the sidecar business to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and later to Saginaw, Michigan where the family owned a Harley-Davidson dealership and continued to build sidecars until just after the Great Depression. It was about that time that young Dorothy, aka Dot, really came into her own. Her father had actually ridden a sidecar from NY to San Francisco when they arrived in the US in an effort to prove the durability of his machines and establish dealership contacts across the US along the way. Looking back on it, there is little doubt to what Dot would be destined to do the same. As a teen she worked in the family dealership and eventually gave into the charms of a young man named Earl Robinson who would later become her husband. The couple acquired Dot’s father’s dealership with the help of Arthur Davidson (one of the founders of Harley-Davidson) in 1932 and eventually moved it to Detroit where they would go on to etch their names in the history of motorcycling. Together they would compete in numerous races as both solo riders and a sidecar duo, with Dot taking countless victories in her signature red livery. She would later become known for wearing pink gear as she distanced herself from the black leather bikers usually wore. In 1935 they even set the transcontinental sidecar record from New York to Los Angeles with a time of 89 hours and 58-minutes. Dot put her personal stamp on things by winning the 500-mile long Jack Pine Enduro Sidecar A-class in 1940 and 1946 against the male riders. The victory in 1940 established her as the first woman to win an AMA National competition. In addition to racing sidecar motorcycles, running a business and raising a family, Mrs. Robinson also co-founded the legendary Motor Maids of America, the original all-female motorcycle club with her friend and fellow motorcycle hall of fame member, Linda Dugeau. The Motor Maids are credited with bringing more female riders into the sport than any other organization at the time and they are still in operation to this day. She continued to race and win through the 1960s before selling of their business in 1972 and doing what most hall of fame motorcycle riders do: They retired, moved to Florida and continued riding, just for the fun of it.

SEAN

SUMMERFIELD 06/24/93-01/13/17 Sean “Little Sean” Summerfield practically grew up at Smoky Mountain Harley, he began working with us at the age of 15 when his father Mike also a member of the Smoky Mountain family, volunteered him for an open wash bay position. By 16, Little Sean was riding his Sportster daily to school and working afternoons and weekends at the dealership. It was obvious from the beginning that Harley-Davidson was in his blood, he absorbed everything from those around him, building and modifying his own motorcycle and working on all sorts of special projects for the dealership. Little Sean was the inspiration for Smoky Mountain’s H-D’s High School Biker Build Off and was a key member in the development and promotion of the Smoky Mountain Scrambler projects. For all that knew him, his “Summerfield Smile” was contagious; his sense for adventure filled others with life. He was a real life James Dean and his memory will live forever in all of us

RIDER SAFETY

You and Your Bike – Ready to Ride In East Tennessee, we’ve been experiencing some really warm temperatures in January. It’s been 60 plus degrees outside. And yes, there are motorcycles on the road. If your bike has been in the garage for an extended period of time and these warm days are urging you to get out and ride, take a few extra minutes and make sure you and your motorcycle are prepared. Motorcycle inspection and maintenance is very important to your safety. More often than not, we just don’t take the time to inspect our bikes before each ride. So, before you head out on the sunny days of winter, let’s review the pre-trip inspection recommended by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF). In the MSF BasicRider Course, we teach our new riders about pre-trip inspections. The best source of information for your motorcycle is the motorcycle owner’s manual, Aka “MOM”. So, when in doubt, just consult your MOM. The inspection should be as routine as tying your shoes each morning and you’ll find it easy to check those important parts using the MSF’s acronym T-CLOCS.

If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, you’re increasing your risk. Riding safely takes all of your attention and focus. So, if you find yourself tired or stressed, it may be a better decision to stay at home. Remember that your safety starts with you! Donna, along with being an avid riding enthusiast, is a MSF motorcycle safety coach for the state of Tennessee and a Harley-Davidson Riding Academy Coach. She is a member of the Motor Maids, H.O.G. and Ladies of Harley.

Aim

Taking a few minutes to complete the inspection can help you find potential problems. You can find a detailed T-CLOCS reference page at www.msf-usa.org in the educational materials. After inspecting your motorcycle, check your helmet and other gear as well. Head injury is the primary cause of death for riders and helmet use can reduce the risk of death by 37 percent according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. Your helmet should fit snugly, without any irritating points of pressure on your head. Most manufactures recommend replacing your helmet every 3 to 5 years with normal wear, after an incident, or if it has sustained a drop from more than 3 feet. Give your helmet a proper inspection on a regular basis. There is one more thing to check, your mental attitude. Ask yourself some questions like: Am I tired? Do I feel mentally ready to ride? Am I stressed out?

HOT & COZY ENCHILADA SOUP

4 Cans of Progresso Chicken Cheese Enchilada Soup (this is your pre-made base) 1 Rotisserie Chicken from Deli; whether you choose Traditional, Garlic, Lemon Pepper, Sage & Basil. All good. 2 Boxes of quality Chicken Broth (not Stock) *if you can only find cans then use 4 cans 2 Cups of cooked Egg Noodles; drained and mixed w/ quality margarine 1 Cup of Half & Half This is my fave Go-To when a group shows up and have to put something on the table.....Fast! In a large stock pot add your 4 cans of soup and the broth. Put your Egg Noodles on to boil asap. Keeping your soup on medium; add pieces that you’ve pulled off the rotisserie chicken and chopped to a medium size. Add a heaping tablespoon on margarine and swirl all through soup. Add a palmful of basil, parsley, cumin and a dash of nutmeg. Salt & pepper to taste. Now, add your egg noodles and just let it go about 15 mins until all that delicious creaminess from the soup gets all through your chicken and egg noodles. Ladle up into big, deep bowls and I always add thin shredded Fiesta blend cheese to the top of each bowl and a dollop of sour cream is optional. Serve w/ the huge, really thin Tortilla Chips or super hot & butttery crusty bread and baby, you’ve got one helluva perfect meal for a cold, crisp day or just any day you want good soup that has the homemade flair but is super simple to make. Spoon Up! (Serves 8) Scale down to accommodate for just yourself or for two people, four, etc.

FROM CANS OF CRESCENT ROLLS TO SCRUMPTIOUS APPLE DUMPLINGS

2 Cans of Pillsbury Crescent Rolls; roll the entire cans out onto floured counterspace or cutting board. 2 Granny Smith Apples; cored and peeled and cut vertically in half and then half and half again. Should come up 8 pcs. per apple and the Crescent rolls have 8 triangles per can. In a larger glass measuring cup, nuke and melt a whole stick of butter. Add 1-1/2 cups of sugar, a Tbls. of cinnamon and a teaspoon of quality Vanilla to same glass measuring cup and stir w/ a spatula until well mixed. Separate your triangles and place a wedge of apple at the widest end and roll up into the point and then tuck the ends up into the folds of the little packet. Do this with all of them and place in a buttered 9x13 glass or ceramic baking dish. Take your spread in the measuring cup and using your spatula, cover each packet completely on the top as possible. Now, this is a bit tricky so just do it carefully......take a full can of Sprite soda and pour all along the sides only of the packets. Make sure you do not get any on the topping. Do it slowly and it will start flowing in between and all around the packets while not disturbing the topping. Bake in a preheated oven of 350 degrees for 35-40 mins. until golden brown. This makes the most crispy, tender Apple Dumplings imaginable and a tremendous sauce to go over them. All you have to do is spoon quality vanilla ice cream on them and WoooEee! your tastebuds are doing the Snoopy Happy Dance. Just SO dang good and so dang simple to make.

SUPER SEXY VALENTINE’S MIMOSA 1 Bottle of Champagne of Ballatore’ Sparkling Wine or Asti Spumonte’ 1 Glass Pitcher of Premium Orange Juice; made from frozen of from the carton. Only fill 1 1/4 of the way up. The rest of the way pour in the champagne. Fill champagne flutes with mixture and leave just a tad of room for several drops of either cherry juice or pomegranate juice for a red color and slightly sweet flavor. Stir CHEERS TO ONE AND ALL. MAY YOU ALWAYS KEEP YOUR PASSION ALIVE.

Inyo National ForestSchulman Grove Many visitors to Death Valley National Park spend the night in Lone Pine, CA. It is one of the closest places to stay, outside of the park, a mere 90 miles away. Glaciers are visible in the nearby White Mountains, while so near the severe heat of Death Valley. Also, the White Mountains contain the Inyo National Forest, home to the world’s oldest trees – the Bristle Cone Pine. 36 miles down I-395, from Lone Pine, is the Schulman Grove, which contains Methuselah, 4,700 years old, and its older brother, which is over 5460 years old. By comparison, the mighty Gen. Sherman Sequoia, in the nearby Sequoia National Park, is thought to be a mere 2,1002,200. General Sherman is the world’s largest tree, but an infant compared to the Bristle Cones. Bristle Cone Pines thrive in harsh conditions of cold, dry, and in rocky soil. The wood has tight “rings”, representing 100 years per inch, due to these growing conditions, and decays very slowly, making it possible to piece together live and dead tree rings to look at climate conditions back to the end of the last ice age, over 11,000 years. The oldest trees are short and twisted, reminiscent of Japanese bonsai trees. Their shape makes them graceful and rugged at the same time. To reach these trees, a visitor may start the 4.5 loop trail, to the oldest trees, at the Schulman Grove Visitor Center, altitude 9,846, and continue upward, past side trails to old mining sites and overlooks of the Nevada basin and range region. Several other trails start at the visitor’s center. As the world experiences a warming trend, it is possible that the current oldest trees may be doomed by competing plants, insects, pests, and fires brought on by warmer temperatures. Already, new tree generations are expanding their range to higher elevations. While Death Valley and Sequoia National Parks are on everyone’s must see list, the more unusual sites are usually overlooked. While you are in an area, be sure to ask the locals about the lesser known venues or you can easily miss out on some fantastic adventures! We only saw a group of Japanese art photography students and one other couple while at the Bristle Cones. Life is most interesting off the beaten path. Why be normal and just do the normal things? REPORT

U.S. World Trophy Team: 2016 AMA Motorcyclists of the Year PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The American Motorcyclist Association announced December 15th, 2016 that its 2016 AMA Motorcyclists of the Year are U.S. World Trophy Team members Taylor Robert, Kailub Russell, Thad DuVall and Layne Michael. On Oct. 16, 2016, they accomplished something that no team of American motorcyclists had done before: They won the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme’s International Six Days Enduro. ”This shared achievement of Taylor, Kailub, Thad and Layne is historic,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. “Generations of AMA members have chased the ISDE World Trophy, and these four riders have finally caught it for all of us.” The AMA Motorcyclist -- or Motorcyclists -- of the Year is the individual or group of individuals who have had the largest positive impact on motorcycling in the calendar year. Since 1913, the ISDE has invited the countries of the world to send their best racers. It is a crown that has always eluded American racers. Until now. “This triumph is unprecedented, and it is my honor to recognize these riders as the 2016 AMA Motorcyclists of the Year,” Dingman said. The 2016 ISDE was Oct. 11-16 in Navarra, Spain. The U.S. World Trophy Team started strong, powering to a 26.02-second gap on the first day. The team added to its lead on the second and third days, slipped a bit on Day 4, then held fairly steady on Days 5 and 6, finishing 3 minutes, 38.66 seconds ahead of the second-place Great Britain team.

In addition, Taylor Robert won the individual overall at the event, only the second time in history an American has accomplished that goal. The U.S. World Trophy riders led a strong U.S. effort that saw the Junior team finish second in its division, the Women’s team come in fourth, club teams finish second and third, and American Fred Hoess win the FIM Vintage Trophy. “For decades, American teams have struggled to win at the ISDE, but in 2016, all those efforts paid off,” Dingman said. “While Taylor, Kailub, Thad and Layne would surely be the first to give credit to lessons learned in previous years, they are the riders who hoisted the ISDE World Trophy for the first time in history.” Profiles of Robert, Russell, DuVall and Michael can be found in the January 2017 issue of American Motorcyclist, the official journal of the AMA.

Steve Kenward, CEO of the MCIA, speaking on behalf of all three parties. “If the government implements the Vnuk judgment unamended, British motorcycle sport would end in the UK.”

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)

RPM ACT REINTRODUCED IN NEW CONGRESS As the 115th Congress went into session, among the first bills reintroduced was the RPM Act (Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports Act of 2017), House Resolution 350 sponsored by U.S. Representative Patrick McHenry (R-NC). The bipartisan bill, which was submitted for reintroduction on the first day of the new Congress, protects Americans’ right to modify street cars and motorcycles into dedicated race vehicles and industry’s right to sell the parts that enable racers to compete. The RPM Act ensures that transforming motor vehicles into race vehicles used exclusively in competition does not violate the Clean Air Act. For nearly 50 years, the practice was unquestioned until the EPA published proposed regulations in 2015 that deemed such conversions illegal and subject to severe penalties. While the EPA withdrew the problematic language from the final rule making last year, the agency still maintains the practice is unlawful. Motorsports competition involves tens of thousands of participants and vehicle owners each year, according to SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) and retail sales of racing products make up a $1.4 billion market annually. There are an estimated 1,300 racetracks operating across the U.S., including oval, road, track and off-road racetracks, the majority of which feature converted race vehicles that the EPA now considers to be illegal. The RPM Act, H.R. 350 would protect the sport of racing by blocking the EPA from over-regulating the industry and ensuring that it remains legal to convert street legal motor vehicles for racing purposes. BRITISH MOTORSPORTS THREATENED BY EU RULING The British government has just issued a document for public consultation that suggests temporarily implementing a European Court decision known as the “Vnuk judgement,” which would make it compulsory for anyone engaging in any and all forms of motor sport to have third party insurance. It would be applicable to all vehicles on any kind of land and even implementing it temporarily would mean an end to motorsports in the UK, because insurance companies will not insure against third party motorsport risks -- the number of vehicle claims alone would be unsustainable for them, meaning that if the Vnuk judgement came into force, motorsport activity in the UK would cease. A joint statement issued by the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA), Auto Cycle Union (ACU) and the Amateur Motorcycle Association (AMCA) is calling on the government to exempt motor and motorcycle sport from any changes to insurance law that would arise from the ECJ ruling. “At a stroke, this would wipe out a successful industry and all the jobs that go with it, as well as eliminating a popular leisure pursuit for 1.9 million people, along with the boost that this gives to both local and national economies,” said 28

England is home to world leading motorcycle companies, motorsport teams and racing talent, and the industry contributes significantly to the British economy by employing over 50,000 people and generating a total of £11 billion of sales each year ($13.5 billion USD). The Vnuk ruling stems from a case involving a Slovenian farm worker, Damijan Vnuk, who was hurt falling from a ladder, which was hit by a reversing tractor. VICTORY MOTORCYCLES WINDS DOWN PRODUCTION Victory Motorcycles is to be wound down, the firm’s parent company Polaris has just announced. The move is to allow the firm to “narrow” its focus onto more profitable areas of the business, including Indian Motorcycle. A statement just released by Polaris says it will “immediately begin winding down its Victory Motorcycles brand and related operations.” Dealers will be assisted in “liquidating existing inventories” and parts will continue to be supplied for 10 years. Servicing and warranty coverage will also continue. “This was an incredibly difficult decision for me, my team and the Polaris Board of Directors,” said Polaris Industries Chairman and CEO Scott Wine. “Over the past 18 years, we have invested not only resources, but our hearts and souls, into forging the Victory Motorcycles brand… The experience, knowledge, infrastructure and capability we’ve built in those 18 years gave us the confidence to acquire and develop the Indian Motorcycle brand, so I would like to express my gratitude to everyone associated with Victory Motorcycles and celebrate your many contributions.” According to the written statement, Victory has “struggled to establish the market share needed to succeed and be profitable.” It says: “The competitive pressures of a challenging motorcycle market have increased the headwinds for the brand. Given the significant additional investments required for Victory to launch new global platforms that meet changing consumer preferences, and considering the strong performance and growth potential of Indian Motorcycle, the decision to more narrowly focus Polaris’ energy and investments became quite clear.” Wine added, “This decision will improve the profitability of Polaris and our global motorcycle business, and will materially improve our competitive stance in the industry.” “Our focus is on profitable growth, and in an environment of finite resources, this move allows us to optimize and align our resources behind both our premium, high-performing Indian Motorcycle brand and our innovative Slingshot brand, enhancing our focus on accelerating the success of those brands. Ultimately this decision will propel the industry-leading product innovation that is core to our strategy while fostering long-term growth and increased shareholder value.”

100% TARIFF PROPOSED ON EUROPEAN MOTORCYCLES Motorcycles are once again caught in the crossfire of an international trade policy standoff between the Office of United States Trade Representative and European Union, stemming from ongoing disagreements over meat products. During the late 1990’s, the World Trade Organization requested the E.U. lift its standing ban on U.S. beef; the E.U. declined, citing the meat’s failure to meet European health and hormone standards. In 2009, the U.S. negotiated a pact allowing some beef market access; but according to the White House, the agreement “has not worked as intended.” As a result, the U.S.T.R. is now considering a new petition from the U.S. beef lobby, invoked last December under a revised clause in the 1974 Trade Act that would create a “retaliation list” of foreign products which are subject to heavy import tariffs, to balance the export losses. Unsurprisingly, the U.S. beef lobby’s list consists largely of meat and animal parts, but it also includes a scattershot of other items, like chewing gum, electric hair clippers, and motorcycles.

and the U.S.T.R has opened the proposal to a public comment period ending January 30. “DEAD RED” LAW PASSES IN OHIO FOR ALL VEHICLES During a three-week lame-duck legislative session that ended in mid-December, state lawmakers in Ohio passed more than fifty new laws, including House Bill 154: Under certain conditions, drivers (and riders) can now proceed through a red light if you think your vehicle is not tripping the signal to change, but only if the intersection is clear. If a malfunctioning traffic signal doesn’t detect your car, truck or motorcycle; the law states that your vehicle must come to a complete stop first, and after a reasonable amount of time you can proceed through the intersection as long as the coast is clear and you must yield to oncoming traffic with the right of way. “If a driver does go through a red light, and there is an accident, they have the burden to prove it was malfunctioning,” explains local A.I.M. attorney (Aid to Injured Motorcyclists) Ralph C. Buss. “If a motorist or motorcyclist, or bicyclist, does come across a light that isn’t working, it is recommended that they should call police.”

Two vehicular tariffs are proposed on the new retaliation list. One is for European bikes between 51cc and 250cc; the other, European bikes between 251cc to 500cc. Both would be subject to an import tax of 100% (or more). This would directly impact fifteen European manufacturers, including major brands like Aprilla, BMW, Ducati, Husqvarna, KTM, Piaggio and Vespa.

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) invites Bike and Motorcycle riders to contact an ODOT advocate to report problems with traffic signals and roadway conditions via Email to bike.report@dot.state.oh.us or call (614) 387-0722.

In doubling prices of the most popular European motorcycles, these tariffs could potentially cripple the U.S. dealer network, putting thousands of salespeople and techs out of work.

A bill has been introduced to require motorcycle riders in Arizona to wear a helmet, except that “AN OPERATOR OR PASSENGER OF A MOTORCYCLE, ALL-TERRAIN VEHICLE OR MOTOR DRIVEN CYCLE WHO IS AT LEAST EIGHTEEN YEARS OF AGE IS EXEMPT FROM THE HELMET REQUIREMENT PRESCRIBED BY SUBSECTION A OF THIS SECTION IF THE OWNER PAYS A FEE (amount to be determined) WHEN REGISTERING THE VEHICLE.”

It’s not the first time the motorcycle industry has been in this position. In 1999, after the E.U. declined the W.T.O. directive, European motorcycles were included in -- and later dropped from -- a similar retaliation list. The same thing happened again in 2008, leading into negotiations for the current deal. The beef lobby’s new petition is currently in the review phase, February 2017

ARIZONA “PAY FOR PLAY” HELMET LAW PROPOSAL

According to HB 2046, introduced by Representative Dr. Randall Friese (D-Tucson), “THE FEE ALLOWS A PERSON TO OPERATE THE MOTORCYCLE, ALL-TERRAIN VEHICLE OR MOTOR DRIVEN CYCLE

A Mafia Godfather finds out that his bookkeeper, Guido, has cheated him out of $5 million dollars. His bookkeeper is deaf. That was the reason he got the job in the first place. It was assumed that Guido would hear nothing, so he would never have to testify in court. When the Godfather goes to confront Guido about his missing $5 million, he brings along his lawyer who happens to know sign language. The Godfather tells the lawyer, “Ask him where the money is!” The lawyer, using sign language, asks Guido, “Where’s the money?” Guido signs back, “I don’t know what you are talking about.” The lawyer tells the Godfather, “He says he doesn’t know what you’re talking about.” The Godfather pulls out a 38, puts it to Guido’s head and says, “Ask him again and if he doesn’t tell me, I’ll kill him!” The lawyer signs to Guido, “He’ll kill you if you don’t tell him.” Guido trembles and signs, “OK, OK! The money is in a brown briefcase, buried behind the shed at my cousin Bruno’s house.” The Godfather asks the lawyer, “What did he say?” The lawyer replies, “He says screw you, you don’t have the balls to pull the trigger.” _________________________________________________

The other day my kinda’ ditzy neighbor with green hair (she changes it every month), came running up to me in the driveway jumping for joy! No judgement. it’s just her “thang”. I didn’t know why she was jumping so excitedly but I thought, “what the hell”, and I starting jumping up and down along with her as that’s just the best way to pacify her. She said, “I have some really great news!” I said, “Great. Tell me why you’re so happy.” She really is enthusiastic and sweet. She stopped jumping and breathing heavily from all the jumping up and down, told me that she was pregnant. I knew she’d been trying for a while so I told her, “That’s great I couldn’t be happier for you!” Then she said, “There’s more” I asked, “What do you mean there’s more?”. She said, “Well, we are not having just one baby. We are going to have TWINS!” Amazed at how she could know so soon after getting pregnant, I asked her how she knew. She said.... “Well, that’s the easy part. I went to WallyWorld and they actually had a home pregnancy kit in a TWIN-pack. Both tests came out positive!” _________________________________________________

During a visit to my doctor, I asked him, “How do you determine whether or not an older person should be put in a Nursing Home?” “Well,” he said, “we fill up a bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the person to empty the bathtub.” “Oh, I understand,” I said. “A normal person would use the bucket because it is bigger than the spoon or the teacup.” “No” he said. “A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed near the window?” _________________________________________________

I think it’s pretty cool how Chinese people made a language entirely out of tattoos. Just sayin’.

Bubba was taking a dump and checking out FB and read that on average; an American man will have sex two to three times a week. Whereas, a Japanese man will have sex only one or two times a year. This was very upsetting news to Bubba. He immediately called his best buddy, Earl, and said, “I know you’re going to be as shocked as I was, but I just come to find out that I’m Japanese.” _________________________________________________ The location of your mailbox shows you how far away from your house you can be in a robe before you start looking like a patient who’s just flew out and over the Cuckoo’s Nest. _________________________________________________ 30

I can’t understand why women are okay that Penny’s has an older women’s clothing line named, “Sag Harbor.” _________________________________________________ The teacher asked the class to use the word “fascinate” in a sentence. Molly put up her hand and said, “My family went to my granddad’s farm, and we all saw his pet sheep. It was fascinating.” The teacher said, “That was good, but I wanted you to use the word ‘fascinate,’ not ‘fascinating’.” Sally raised her hand. She said, “My family went to see Rock City and I was fascinated.” The teacher said, “Well, that was good Sally, but I wanted you to use the word ‘fascinate’.” Little Johnny raised his hand, but the teacher hesitated because she had been burned by Little Johnny before. She finally decided there was no way he could damage the word “fascinate,” so she called on him. Johnny said, “My aunt Carolyn has a sweater with ten buttons, but her boobs are so big she can only fasten eight!” The teacher sat down and put her head on her desk.

February 2017

by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley

Happy Valentine’s Day Do you watch the Big Bang Theory? My wife and I have noticed that after about 15 minutes of the show they target mute button pushers. After 4 or 5 commercials, they flash the show logo that starts the show to get you to unmute. They follow it instead with a couple of more commercials and then do the show logo trick again, then do a couple of more commercials and with no logo go back to the show. Devious bastards!!! Do they think we don’t notice this Lucy and the football trick? I wonder how many other shows are doing this? Seems like a 30-minute show has 15 to 20 minutes of commercials. Are they really that scared of the mute button? Is the mute button responsible for today’s unemployment rate? Is this just a way to cut the pay of self-important actors and maximize the money from commercials to save rain forests? Actors get paid for less face time and the network gets paid for more commercials? Maybe they think we don’t have lives and are too dumb to do anything but watch!!! We keep waiting for a show to come back to learn how it ends but we get caught in eternal commercial hell!! I’ve been grousing about this for a while and have discovered this has become a common tactic employed by the networks. Take for instance the nightly newscasts. In particular, look at the weathercasts. You tune up the first newscast at 4pm to find out what the weather will be tomorrow, you hang on through the first two or three robbery reports, the murders and car crashes. Then you get the rush hour congestion report, the media slam on the President with the inserted propaganda words like controversial, radical, questionable ethics, extreme conservative, etc. They are compelled to undercut Trump before he really does make America great again because when Trump is successful the liberal communist revolution will be outed as the disaster for America it is. After all of that we get teased with a short glimpse of the weather and told the full weather report will be later or at 6pm. They use the carrot and stick ploy because they think we are just dumb donkeys to be led. Why do they do this?? They do it to keep us immersed in commercials so we’ll run out and buy new cars, February 2017

soap, drugs, “The Meats” and pizza!!! Have you also noticed that they are playing the same commercial twice now when they take commercial breaks during shows? They play a commercial, follow it with a different commercial and then play the first commercial again. The weather report is the big bait today in TV. The geeky girl in a dress made by a homeless person with a hatchet has a clicker in her hand and puts up a picture of the state that has little towns and numbers all over it. Then she starts telling you what you are looking at; Toad Lick 23, Dickson 23, Lebanon 23, Paducah 23…. All of the towns she highlights are within one or two degrees of each other but she has to tell us what the temp is at each one anyway. Like we can tell the difference standing outside between 22 and 23!!! Geez! If you ask her what her temperature is she’ll tell you her left elbow is 98.6, her right elbow is 98.6, her left boob is 98.6 and she’ll go through every part of her body at 98.6. Holy Cow! Is this really what we pay all that cable money for? Why are we punished with the same car commercials year after year a bizzilion times over and over??? Shouldn’t we just buy a personal weather station and walk to the kitchen window to see what the weather is in 2 seconds? Why do we submit to being tortured through 4 hours of news and weather repeats and the same 8 commercials that are replayed 20 times an hour??? Has participation trophy society been mind controlled to watch no matter what?? This is the reason God invented motorcycles! We bikers can get on the road and look at the ever-changing scenery. We can challenge our twitch muscle reflexes as we dodge the car and truck drivers watching the weather girl on their cell phones instead of the road. Our view behind handle bars is the real interactive TV. I know what a rain cloud looks like when I see it. I know to leather up when the temp isn’t going above 65. I know not to let hail go Bang-BangBang on my helmet. My wind always blows at 80 mph. Kill the TV and crank the starter!! Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. WILL RIDE TO EAT

EAGLE’S NEST

Wilson County, Tennessee, was created October 26, 1799. Isham Davis constructed his home on an old wagon road in Wilson County that later became a stagecoach road and is now named Old Lebanon Dirt Road. Isham received a license to operate an “ordinary” in his home. Taverns, along with inns, at that time were mostly known as ordinaries, a term that came from Europe. These taverns served many purposes such as courtrooms, religious meetings, trading posts, inns, post offices, and convenience stores. Isham Davis’s Ordinary became the Eagle Tavern and you could buy bullets, whiskey, and other necessities of the wild frontier of Tennessee. The Eagle Tavern became the anchor of a small community that later became Mount Juliet, Tennessee, the only town named Mount Juliet in the world. The Eagle Tavern is no more but a new place has opened in Mount Juliet to give tribute to it. Welcome Eagle’s Nest, 2307 North Mount Juliet Road, Mount Juliet, TN 37122, (615) 953-2245, website http://eaglesnesttavern.com/, Facebook http://facebook.com/EaglesNestNashville . This new ordinary is anything but ordinary. The interior decoration honors the history of Mount Juliet, combines a touch of Tennessee with high class food and drink and brings an acoustic stage with a variety of live music and artists. If you like locally brewed beers, you’ll find over 18 taps with something to tingle your tongue and many more in bottles. They also have a couple of dozen bourbons and whiskeys, many from small specialty distillers that have been hand selected for quality and great taste - traditional with a flair for unique. The Eagle’s Nest will also specialize in really good wines at a reasonable price. Wine gets overlooked in a lot of new places these days but you’ll like the variety and excellence here. The food is amazing. Customers all get homemade skillet corn bread with a choice of honey butter, apple 36

butter or pepper jelly. You have to see the menu to really see how special it is but you’ll find Bison Sliders, French Toast BLT, Pot Roast, Bison Pie, “Nashville Hot Chicken”, Bourbon glazed Salmon, and more. They even have a kid’s menu but the drink selections are tamer. The desert menu includes Banana Fosters Beignets!! Ordinary houses had women, whiskey and bullets. The Eagle’s Nest ordinary will have 2 of the 3 but you’ll have to come see which one is not on the list. There is parking in front and in back. The back-parking lot has special biker parking. The folks that own Eagles Nest are supporting Nashville Bike Week 2017 and have several bars and restaurants in downtown Nashville, the Nashville Palace and the Scoreboard Bar & Grill. They know food, drink and how to make a place you’ll never forget and will always come back to. Let’s Ride to Eat!! If you are out riding to eat and see me please come up and tell me your favorite places to go when you’re hungry and thirsty. “Will Ride to Eat” is an ongoing article in Thunder Roads® Magazine of Tennessee and we want to put the spotlight on the great history and variety of Tennessee’s biker friendly establishments.
