I
T’S THE MONTH to celebrate love. With Valentine’s Day upon us, everyone is seeing hearts. For those in a relationship, this month is absolutely wonderful. With chocolate, flowers, jewelry, fancy dinners and lovely dates, it’s the perfect time to be coupled up. For those who are single this holiday, take the time to pamper yourself. You’re worth it.
DON'T MISS AN ISSUE!!!
Remember when we were kids and we took Valentine’s to school to give to our classmates? And we decorated boxes to hold all of the Valentine’s we received. Do kids still do that? I can’t remember in which grade kids stop doing that. Was it middle school? It definitely wasn’t happening in high school, LOL.

“SPIRITUAL CONNECTIONS” This is a very sensitive subject that most religious denominations do not teach, but is vital to our spiritual growth. We must have this strong foundation to build upon and we need to know our “Spiritual roots.” How you perceive your “Man of God (Pastor)” determines what you receive from him. In a body of believers, people are at many different levels of faith. The Pastor can preach the exact same message to everyone, but some receive more revelation than others. Example: there is the visitor’s level that attend the church. There’s the members level that view preacher as the Pastor of that Church. There are membership level that see the preacher as their personal Pastor and then there’s the level of what I call “congregational sons and the level of “ministerial sons.” (The word “sons” does not pertain to gender, but to a position). There are many examples throughout the entire bible regarding this Spiritual relationship such as Moses & Aaron, Ruth & Naomi, Paul & Timothy and Paul & Titus. When Paul writes letters to the churches, he is writing to the public, to his “congregational sons.” But when he writes letters to individuals like Timothy & Titus, these letters were meant to be private, to his “ministerial sons” which he never intended for the public to read, but God wanted us to view them so we could get an understanding of “Spiritual Sonship”. When Paul is writing publically to the churches, he never gives names of those that came against him. In his letters to his spiritual sons, he tells them everything. Ministerial sons get “Impartation,” Congregational sons get “Information.” You don’t get to choose your Spiritual parents, the Holy Spirit will lead you in that direction; “As many that are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” Paul addresses the church at Corinth; “though you have ten thousand instructors in Christ” how many teachers, preachers, evangelist, radio, TV, CDs, and magazines have influenced your life? “But you have not many fathers: for in Christ I have begotten you through the gospel,” by revealing revelation knowledge, not because he was charismatic, good looking, rich or part of a mega church. You should have a Spiritual umbilical-cord between you and your Spiritual father. Paul also explains why some believers don’t stay in one place, but move from church to church, gleaning a little bit from one February 2018
Pastor to another. Before long their Spiritual life looks like a dog’s breakfast. 1 John 2:19 “They went out from us but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us, but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not of us.” Gal.4:1-9 “The heir (believer), as long as he is a child, differ nothing from a servant (Congregational sons) though he be lord of all; But is under tutors & governors (ten thousand instructors), until the time appointed by the Father (ministerial sons).” Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

DYNO TUNING By: Scott High Back in the carburetor days tuning your bike at home wasn’t that hard, drill out the mixture cover so you could turn the screw or maybe turn a knob, shim or replace a needle and if it idled smoothly, didn’t cough, smoke, chug, backfire, or fall flat at the top end of the rpm range, it was probably good. Most people left them alone, some got a little more precise by reading plugs and header pipe colors but for the most part if it ran it ran. Although they make no changes for weather or altitude carbs work pretty well if they are tuned somewhere in the ballpark, because the more air that goes through it, the more fuel it delivers. Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) was available as an option on Harley-Davidsons from 1995-96 until 2006 when carbs became the option, but since 2007 EFI is all you can get. EFI is a lot more precise and it does change with weather and altitude. For most, if they are both tuned well the only noticeable difference between carbs and EFI is you no longer have to remember to turn the fuel on or manage the choke for cold starts. But like most things motorcycle, the search for more power has caused some to try to find it by tinkering with their EFI system. I’m a shade tree tuner. My first EFI bike was a 2000 Road King with Magneti Marelli EFI and a Power Commander “piggy back” tuner on it with a downloaded map. Basically it tricked the factory system to adjust by sending a modified signal to the ECM and the tuner made it run much better. In 01-02 H-D switched to Delphi EFI, a much better system because it uses O2 sensors, but at first the options for home tuning were still limited. Later, the software guys caught up and they started building in self tuners. On my 06 Ultra I had a Thundermax, a tunable replacement ECM and later when they came out with self-tuning software and hardware for the system I put that on too. I started learning more about EFI tuning but I’m far from an expert. I’ve always been able to get my bikes to run pretty well but I’ve wondered how much better a good dyno-tune from a real expert could be. When I got a 14 Ultra Limited I added a 6
Screaming Eagle Pro Super Tuner which also has a self-tuning function built in. Tuning an EFI bike at home is guessing, selftuners let you guess with help, I have been self-tuning on this “stage 1” bike for over 3 years and I felt like it was pretty good, and better than the downloaded map for it. I thought it could be better, but I didn’t know how much. Jamie Lima at HarleyDavidson of Cool Springs invited us out to put it on their dyno and let their tuner, Mike Van Orden, see how I have done and see how much more an expert can get out of it with a real tune. Mike, an H-D Master Technician, engine builder, and tuner, started working on bikes with his father when he was a kid. Later the motorcycle scene in Phoenix drew him there, where he was taught how to tune by a few expert tuners with different styles, and he has combined what they taught him and what he’s learned along the way and developed his own method. It’s a little different (he calls it unorthodox), but the results speak for themselves, he’s even developed EFI base maps for some of the major aftermarket companies. Dyno tuning isn’t expensive in the overall scheme of things but most people don’t see it

FULL PULLS
CRUISE as necessary, it usually is. Even stock bikes can benefit from a good tune. Ride-ability is the biggest gain even with the new EPA compliant tuners because all motors come from the factory with the same very lean tune to pass an EPA test, and because every motor is slightly different, some don’t respond as well as others to the factory tune. If you’ve made any changes to your motor at all a good tune is mandatory. Dyno tuning is all about maximizing your specific motor combination for power and efficiency in every situation by dialing in the Air Fuel Ratio (AFR) and timing. Some things to keep in mind, before you take your bike in, make sure you have a good back tire and a full tank of the pump fuel you normally use with no additives in it. There is a lot of prep work before your bike is strapped to the drum, checking the bike over to make sure it’s in good working condition, and while some tuners put long probes in the mufflers, in this case Mike removed the heat shields to drill holes in the header pipes and installed weld nuts to insert a probe into each pipe one at a time. When the 45 minute to an hour prep work was done it was time to tune. Every tuner has their own way of tuning, as I said Mike’s is different, but it works very well. Tuning AFR is basically telling the ECM how much air is actually coming in to each cylinder by changing the VE (Volumetric Efficiency) numbers, it then uses those numbers to know how much fuel February 2018
to add to hit the target AFR. After he set the target AFRs he wanted the bike to run at different RPM/loads, he tuned each cylinder one at a time, first with one hand on the throttle and the other taking notes he checked diagonally across the RPM and Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) blocks just like you run up through the gears on the road. Using the notes he then tuned the bike and checked his work with a recorded pull. Then using the same process he checked and tuned across the blocks for best cruise in the ranges you normally ride in on the road. Finally full throttle pulls for max power. Each of those pulls gave him the information he needed to fill in what few blanks were left based on his knowledge and experience. Then he tweaked the timing and all of the other little settings that are available with most tuners that can make a big difference in ride-ability. In total he only made 6 recorded pulls on the bike which is very low, I’ve seen dyno sheets with over 30 pulls on them but most take around 15-20. The numbers, overall, he found 5.5% more peak horse power, and 8.5% more peak torque with a max of almost 17% (over 13 ft-lb) more torque at 2500 RPM. While the peak numbers were typical for a stage 1 bike (mid 80’s HP and low 100’s TQ), those gains are impressive on a bike that has over 35 self-tuning runs on it, but the real difference dyno tuning made was on the road. This bike has never been this responsive even when it was stock, by responsive I mean when you twist the throttle it JUMPS forward which makes the added power very noticeable, and it pulls harder everywhere. It’s also more controllable at parking lot speeds and has no popping on deceleration, or ill manners of any kind. It also runs cooler and gets great mileage. It completely changed the way the bike rides for the better. The moral of the story is if you haven’t had your EFI bike dyno tuned, it’s worth the time and money if you want it to be all it can be, in every situation. Most every Harley Dealership in the state has a dyno and a tuner and some independent shops do as well, go and talk to a few and find one you like. If you don’t have an EFI tuner on your bike already, find out which one your tech likes best before you buy, and if you are in the Cool Springs area go talk to Mike. You won’t be disappointed.

Bullet Points
GUN SHOP ETIQUETTE
Gun shops are great places where you can learn about, put your hands on, and handle the firearms and accessories you are interested in purchasing, but they can also be intimidating to some people. You can read all of the internet reviews and watch all of the videos you want but until you put your hands on the firearm you will never know. Your local gun shop operates on very small profit margins and they still have bills to pay just like you and me, so to keep the lights on, the staff fed, and the shelves stocked, they are counting on you making some purchases there. Don’t be the guy that only goes to the shop to check out your latest internet purchase before you buy from some guy shipping guns from his grandmother’s basement to save $20.
If you do pretty soon you will be making those purchases sight unseen. Here is a short list of some of the dos and don’ts at your local gun shop. First, don’t be nervous, the staff at the store are pretty knowledgeable and they aren’t going to laugh at you if you ask questions, in fact they will appreciate it more than if you try to act like you know what you are talking about if you don’t, they’ll pick up on that pretty quick and probably will laugh at you, but hopefully after you leave. If you want to handle a gun just ask, they will let you. After they clear it and hand it to you don’t point it at them, or anyone else for that matter. When you are handed a firearm even if you just watched someone clear it, it’s good practice to check it yourself, then point it in a safe direction to see how it points and fits your hand. It’s also a good time to ask how to operate it if you are unfamiliar with it. That brings us to slide stops, if you pull the slide back it’s never ok to just let it go on an empty chamber and if the slide is locked back don’t just drop the slide stop, also don’t open the cylinder of a revolver and flip it shut like in the movies. Same with dry firing, usually it’s ok to dry fire most centerfires but almost never a rimfire, so always ask before you dry fire either and if it needs one, they will probably
February 2018
offer you a snap cap. Treat every firearm like it’s expensive and belongs to someone else because until you have filled out the forms and paid for it, it is and it does. Never try to strip a gun down at the counter, if you want to see the insides ask, also never force a gun to do something, if you push the magazine release and it doesn’t drop out ask the staff. Remember it’s not your gun yet. It is ok if you’ve seen a gun cheaper somewhere else to ask if they can take a little off the price, sometimes they will if they can and usually it depends on your attitude. If you ask them to take $100 off of a $400 gun they can’t, be reasonable, the guy shipping guns from his grandmother’s basement doesn’t have to pay staff, rent and an electric bill so when they offer you 10% off, that will probably be pretty close once you pay shipping and transfer fees and remember they let you come in out of the heat, cold, or rain, and ask questions and handle it under the bright lights of the shop before you buy it, the internet guy doesn’t. If the shop staff is working on a trade it’s not ok to try to out-bid them. If they fail to reach an agreement it’s ok to go out in the parking lot and try to reach a price. Also if you bring a gun into a shop to trade bring it in a case or at least with the action open. If you are carrying never pull your loaded firearm from its holster without asking the staff if you may, usually that will be met with them doing the same. Gun shops are great places to talk to likeminded people about guns but be careful what you say, gun people are very opinionated. You don’t know who they are or where they have been so don’t go into a gun shop and start spouting off about every gun in the cabinet. You never know if the gun you are badmouthing because you had problems with it at the range has served the guy next to you well through multiple deployments in a hostile environment. Finally a gun shop is a place like most places where if you treat people with respect you will be treated with respect.

River City Powersports Show By: Scott High The River City Powersports show in Owensboro KY is just a short drive from a large part of Tennessee. They have a huge bike show, in fact it’s home to the Kentucky stop on the Baddest Bagger Tour which brought out some of the coolest baggers around, and their own Regular Joe Bike Show had 19 classes. There were over 60 vendors with live music on stage and food and drinks available. It’s also a party, it’s organized by the same folks that put on the Hawg Valley Rally. Saturday night there is an after party which is included with your $15 2 day ticket, this year our friends Geneva and The Geneva band played to a full house. You can drive up, check out all the bikes and vendors and drive home, but the River City Powersports show was conceived as a destination event, a mid-winter get away to come and hang out with your friends and meet new ones to help you get through a cold winter with very few chances to ride. It’s held in the Owensboro Convention Center right on the Ohio river and there are 2 hotels just a few steps away on either side so you can book a room, come up on Saturday, walk around and see the show, and vote for peoples choice by making a $1 donation to charity. Then you can go to the after party, listen to music have a few drinks and a great time with great people then walk back to your hotel room. Think of it as an indoor rally! The next morning you can get up and go see which bikes won the hardware and enjoy the drive home. Even with 5 inches of snow this year the turnout was great and lots of our Tennessee friends braved the snow and stopped by our booth to say hi. It really was a lot of fun and a great get away. Watch for it next year!

“PANHEAD” PHIL OF MUSIC CITY MOTORCYCLES
I got to spend some time with my old friend Phil “Panhead” Hipsher the other day and if you never sat down to talk to him, you‘ve missed a very interesting time. Panhead started Music City Motorcycles in 2001, located at 208 17th Avenue North, just north of Church Street. His shop is nationally known for the many trophy bikes his has built, as well as those featured in many biker magazines, including “Thunder Roads Magazine” and several in “Easyriders”, which gave him a display booth in their Nashville show. Panhead was born in Sevierville, TN and moved to Sparta when he was 2 years old. As his father wasn’t around much, at an early age he began hanging out at a lawnmower/rototiller shop and was soon repairing small engines. At 15, he acquired his first motorcycle, a 1973 Honda Scrambler and worked on it at the shop. He then moved up to a kickstart Sportster and then built his first bike on his own, a 1955 Panhead. He later joined a motorcycle club in Sparta. They told him that he could have an old 1957 Panhead, if he could get it started, which he did. One of the members saw him riding it and told a friend, “Here comes that old Panhead. His friend yelled “Hey Panhead”, thinking that was Phil’s name, and it stuck. In addition to building you a cool custom bike, Panhead’s shop will service, restore, or repair your V-Twin. Some services are also available for Metric bikes – just ask. As you can see, Panhead has been a biker all of his life. He even lives in his shop, staying close to his creations. Two of his current projects are building a 1954 Panhead and a 2017 Indian. Several of his customs are also in the shop. In addition, due to his love of music, he drives a bus for touring music artists and hosts NOW recording studios in his shop, as well as providing assistance to up and coming artists. Quite an interesting and great guy! Give Panhead a call at 615-963-9508, see his ad in “Thunder Roads Magazine”, or check out his web site at www.musiccitymotorcycle. com. RIDER SAFETY
PERSONAL SAFETY - TOASTY & WARM
I
FREQUENTLY talk about how distraction increases risk when we are riding. When any part of your body becomes uncomfortable, you become distracted by it. This can happen quickly when riding in cold weather. I was recently talking to Jim Cook, owner of Appalachian Rider Education Program (www. arep4u.com) discussing the value in layering and the importance of protecting the farthest extremities from the heart, your fingers and toes! (It was a cold, snowy day and seemed like a valid topic.) Here is a recap of the things we talked about.
Not only is being cold on your bike a distraction, it is also dangerous. Hypothermia is a lower than normal body temperature, typically when your body temperature falls below 95 degrees. Some of the warning signs are: ■■
slower reaction times
■■
sleepiness
■■
loss of concentration
■■
shivering
■■
slurred speech
index is used instead.” This is where the importance of layering comes in. Start with a base layer and choose something that is breathable. When you get to the top layer, think about a jacket that is windproof. Along with layers, heated gear is very popular and is a super accessory for cold-weather riding. You can stay warm with heated gloves, jacket liners, vests and pant liners. One last thought, and it’s about dehydration. You can become dehydrated in cold weather and often you won’t even recognize it. By the time you feel thirsty, you are most likely already dehydrated. Keep that water bottle stashed in your bike year-round.
As your body gets cold, blood vessels contract or narrow in the arms and legs which results in your fingers and toes being the first to suffer from the cold. For this reason, it is important to protect the farthest extremities from the heart when you are preparing for your cold (or cool) weather ride. Winter riding gloves, glove liners, heated gloves and disposable heat packs are great for keeping those fingers toasty so that you can properly operate your throttle, clutch, front brake and other controls. You have the same options for keeping your toes and feet warm.
There it is, the chat Jim and I had that came from cold fingers and toes on a cold, snowy day in January. Prepare for coldweather riding and remember, safe riding starts with you! Donna, along with being an avid riding enthusiast, is a MSF motorcycle safety coach for the state of Tennessee and a Harley-Davidson Riding Academy Coach. She is a member of the Motor Maids, H.O.G. and Ladies of Harley.
Along with your extremities, you’ll will need to keep your head warm as well. What your mom said about heat escaping from your head is true. With this knowledge in mind you can consider a skull cap helmet liner, balaclava or neck gaiter. I favor the neck gaiter almost yearround focusing on fleece in the winter months. I’ve found that keeping my neck warm aids in keeping my core warm as well. What about that wind chill factor? Checking Wikipedia, you can find that “wind chill is the perceived decrease in air temperature felt by the body on exposed skin due to the flow of air. Wind chill numbers are always lower than the air temperature for values where the formula is valid. When the apparent temperature is higher than the air temperature, the heat February 2018

The operation resulted in the return of 591 POWs to the United States but also the abandonment of possibly two times that number in Southeast Asia. Henry Kissinger negotiated the release of prisoners held in North Vietnam but not those held in Laos, Cambodia, South Vietnam, China and Russia. Vietnam is repatriating the abandoned POW’s by warehousing their remains after they die and systematically planting them in former battlefield areas scheduled to be searched and excavated by US teams. Vietnam, United States bureaucrats and intelligence services coordinate to keep this sad truth concealed. Nobody in government wants to admit that previous Presidents going back to Harry Truman have lied to the American people and told them no prisoners of war were abandoned for political convenience. Today Vietnam cooperates because they receive special treatment from the United States in return for helping insure no live POWs return from Southeast Asia to reveal the truth. The fact that our government has abandoned close to 30,000 American POWs since World War II is the saddest travesty of the American story. 73 years after the end of WWII, 64 years after the cease fire with North Korea and 43 years after the fall of Saigon the cover up continues with no great American outcry!!! Today it looks like the government bureaucrats who have managed this open wound on the American conscience may be close to winning. In spite of countless books, investigations and evidence proving Americans were left behind in captivity and abandoned, there is no major outcry for their return or for the true story of their fate to be admitted by the United States Government. Several Presidents have issued executive orders for the classified documents on all missing in action service members to be declassified and made available for public view. Congress has mandated the declassification of all documents associated with the missing. In spite of these orders the intelligence services play shell games with the files, withhold them and refuse to turn them over. Why??? The number of Americans alive when the missing were lost continues to decline as they age and pass away. For all practical purposes nobody under the age of 43 was alive when these men went missing or were abandoned. If the government isn’t held accountable for the lie within the next 20 years those who were abandoned or have not been ac-

counted for will be lost forever. When nobody is left to care the government will close the files and shut down the effort altogether. There are still 1602 American service members missing from the Vietnam war. Recently the President went to Vietnam and during his speech to the world he declared the importance of a complete accounting for our missing Americans. We hope this signals a positive shift away from the blind-eye stance of the past five post-Vietnam presidents. We also hope the 2015 Department of Defense reorganization of the activity responsible for POW/MIA accounting will finally be put on track. When the former organizations (DPMO and JPAC) were blended into the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) most of the people responsible for the poor performance were kept. Is it any surprise the effort to investigate and recover missing service members continues to account at a pace that will take centuries? There are still 82,411 officially missing in action since WWII? They have yet to account for the minimal number of 200 service members per year mandated by congress!! Michael McDonald-Low is a former Vietnam war infantry commander. He remained focused on insuring one of his soldiers lost on the battlefield was recovered and identified. It became painfully obvious the government office responsible was not looking where the soldier was lost. After several years of trying to direct them to where the soldier was lost he was allowed to go with the search team. He was able to guide them and the result of his effort led to the recovery of his former soldier and the return of his remains to the family. Michael was designated Southeast Asia Veteran Liaison and provided analysis and expertise to help recover other MIAs. He was there during the transition to DPAA. He has seen the inner workings of the new organization and discovered the effort is dramatically flawed and in need of a new plan, new people and alterations leading to better performance. His recommendations include; adopting equipment that finds remains and not just metal, add combat veterans to case investigation teams, interviewing veteran survivors of the loss incident, adding investigative team members to the recovery team, all identification technology be made available to complete an identification and develop university partnerships to develop new technologies. So far nothing has changed and families have to wait centuries to learn the fate of their loved one. Shouldn’t our government bring our missing home and put this tragedy in the past? Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. Water St., in Mobile, Alabama, so reserve your room now for the special NCOM rate of $114 by calling (251) 438-4000. The largest gathering of motorcycle rights activists in the world, this year’s NCOM Convention will draw hundreds of concerned motorcyclists from across America to “The Port City” to address topics of concern to all riders. All motorcyclists are welcomed and encouraged to participate in the many meetings, seminars and group discussions that focus on legislative efforts and litigation techniques to protect our riders’ rights and preserve Freedom of the Road. Agenda items will cover legal and legislative issues, with Special Meetings for Veterans Affairs, Women in Motorcycling, Clean & Sober Roundtable and World of Sport Bikes, as well as the Christian Unity Conference and Confederation of Clubs Patch Holders Meeting. NCOM has successfully outreached to numerous segments of the motorcycling community in an effort to unite for our rights, in both the courthouse and statehouse, and has become a unifying voice amongst North America’s motorcycle rights organizations (MROs), motorcycle clubs, women riders, religious riding organizations, touring groups, trikers, sportbikers, and minority motorcyclists. SECOND BIKER SET FOR TRIAL IN WACO REJECTS PLEA DEAL Following a hung jury in the first of 171 Twin Peaks cases to go to court, resulting in a declared mistrial, the second defendant set for trial on charges stemming from the deadly May 17, 2015 shooting has rejected a plea deal. Dallas trucker George “Scooter” Bergman declined a deal in court to plea to a misdemeanor with one year probation, and the District Attorney dropping murder charges, but he instead demanded his day in court by pleading not guilty to engaging in organized criminal activity resulting in deaths and injuries. Nine bikers were killed and 20 injured in the 2015 shootout involving police and bikers at the Twin Peaks restaurant in Waco, Texas. Describing how he was on his way to the bathroom when the first shots rang out, and how he ducked for cover until the firing stopped, Bergman says “How can I say I am guilty for something when that is what I did?” Defense attorney Clint Broden says the state has no evidence against his client “other than he was present at Twin Peaks and was wearing a motorcycle jacket.” The prosecutor’s office has since sought a continuance of the case until July, after the upcoming March 6 election primary, in a move many believe is so the D.A. doesn’t suffer a loss or another mistrial before facing local voters. 26
Last November, Bandidos MC leader Christopher “Jake” Carrizal was the first biker to face trial. The jury in that case told the judge that even after several hours of deliberation they could not reach a unanimous verdict, which forced the judge to declare a mistrial. STUDY URGES MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS TRAINING IN DRIVER’S ED Motorcycle awareness should be included in all driver training and increased in safety campaigns, according to the authors of an Australian National University study which found that drivers are twice as likely to miss seeing a motorcycle compared with a taxi and admit they do not expect to see motorcyclists. Referred to it as “inattentional blindness” resulting in “looked-butfailed-to-see” (LBFTS) crashes, these are the most common type of collision involving motorcycles, according to the 2017 US Motorcycle Crash Causation Study. Now, a new Australian National University study, “Allocating Attention to Detect Motorcycles: The Role of Inattentional Blindness”, has found that drivers are overloaded with more sensory information than the brain can handle. “So our brain has to decide what information is most important,” the study reports. Researchers showed photographs of “safe” or “unsafe” situations involving a motorcycle and a taxi, and 65% did not detect the motorcycle while only 31% did not notice the taxi. In other experiments, drivers modulated their attention to accommodate motorcycles when necessary, suggesting that motorcycles are given the least amount of attention. Participants said they believed a motorcycle was just as likely to be on the road as a taxi, but admitted they would be far less likely to notice the motorcycle. However, participants who have a motorcycle license were more likely to notice the motorcycles. “Motorcycles appear to be very low on the priority list for the brain when it is filtering information,” University researcher Kristen Pammer says. Co-authors say their study highlights the need to encourage drivers to be more motorcycle-aware with special training for novice drivers to “put motorcyclists higher on the brain ‘radar’ of the driver.” Pammer notes many ways drivers can be made rider-aware, including advertising campaigns. “I would put it into driver training programs where everyone who drives must also experience what it is like to ride a motorbike,” she says, adding that “If we could have everyone pass a simulator motorbike riding test -- I bet it would make a big difference.” TRAFFIC STOP 101 REQUIRED LEARNING A legislative trend has started amongst states passing laws requiring licensees be taught the basics of being pulled over, and by knowing what to do drivers can avoid negative interactions with law enforcement during traffic stops. As of the New Year, three more states have introduced such legislation; In Kentucky, HB104 would require that a driver’s education program includes “instruction regarding a driver’s conduct during interactions with law enforcement officers” and amend the state’s Driver Manual to contain the information needed for an operator’s license examina-

tion; and require driver training schools to include it in the course of instruction for new drivers. House Bill 104 was introduced January 2nd and referred to the House Judiciary Committee. House Bill 1244 in Missouri “Requires driver’s license examiners to demonstrate to applicants what he or she is likely to experience during a traffic stop and requires driver’s education providers to include curriculum on traffic stops.” Likewise, S7239 in New York would mandate “driver education courses to include a description of law enforcement procedures during traffic stops and the actions a motorist shall take during such stop including appropriate interactions with such officers.” It was introduced January 5th in the Senate and referred to the Transportation Committee. SLUMPING BIKE SALES BLAMED ON UNCLE SAM “To say sales of new motorcycles have been slow is an understatement right up there with advising the captain of the Titanic that there’s a ‘little leak’ down in the hold,” observes the National Motorists Association (www.motorists.org), then rhetorically asking ‘Why?” in a recent blog...”Could it be ... Uncle?” “It is because of Uncle that motorcycling isn’t what it was once -freeing, in particular,” claims NMA columnist Eric Peters, adding that it has also become too expensive for Millennials -- the next-up generation that ought to be swelling the new rider ranks, but aren’t, because they’re already saddled with plenty of debt. Some telling statistics indicate the median age of a rider today is 47 -- up from 32 in 1990 -- and even more alarming is that the number of first-time/new riders in the 18-24 cohort of people who will form the backbone of the buyer base for the next 20-30 years is down from 16% of the total pool back in 1990 to a depressing 6% today. Probably because they can’t afford it, says NMA. “Motorcycling has become not-cheap for several reasons -- all traceable to Uncle.” Bikes are now mandated to have the same expense-padding equipment -- especially anti-pollution equipment like cars have had for decades, even though motorcycles overall have a negligible impact on February 2018
the environment because of small engines in small numbers. “New bikes must now be very much like new cars -- computercontrolled EFI, catalytic converters...They are not only expensive as a result -- especially to service, which most people can no longer do themselves.” So instead of being an inexpensive hands-on experience, motorcycling is becoming the pastime of the old -- and affluent. The median household income of a motorcycle owner is now $62,200 according to stats compiled by the Motley Fool and 65% bring in more than $50,000. That largely rules out the 18-24 crowd (Millennials) as a class. It’s not that they “don’t like motorcycles,” as asserted by some analysts... “It’s simply that they can’t afford them anymore.” AIRBAG SUITS NOW MANDATORY IN MOTORCYCLE RACING Motorcycle suits with airbag technology have been used voluntarily by most of the world’s fastest riders for nearly a decade, though never mandatory, but that has now changed for all classes across the 2018 MotoGP World Championship races. Thanks to a new official ruling by governing body Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), the high-tech devices are becoming mandatory across the board in MotoGP, Moto2, and Moto3 for the 2018 season. The FIM’s new mandate states that all full-time riders must wear leathers fitted with an airbag system at all times during every session. The new regulations also require that every airbag system pass a series of rigorous tests which each manufacturer is responsible for selfcertifying that its respective suit passes all regulations and standards. “These regulations mark yet another step towards increased rider safety, with the FIM, IRTA and Dorna all committed to making sure MotoGP is as safe as possible -- and always evolving,” according to MotoGP. “Whipped” is in his back yard trying to fly a kite. He throws the kite up in the air, the wind catches it for a few seconds, it then comes crashing back down to the earth. “Whipped” tries this a few more times with no success. All the while, his wife is watching from the kitchen window and muttering to herself how men need to be told how to do everything. She opens the window and yells to her husband, “Whip, you need a piece of tail.” “Whipped” turns with a confused look on his face and says, “Make up your mind, woman! Last night you told me to go fly a kite.” -------------------------------------------------------------I was having drinks at a popular local hotel Pub with my friend Justin, when he spotted an attractive woman sitting at the bar. After an hour of gathering his courage, he approached her and asked, “Would you mind if I chatted with you for a while?” She responded by yelling at the top of her lungs, “No, I won’t come over to your place tonight!” With everyone in the restaurant staring, Justin crept back to our table, puzzled and humiliated. A few minutes later, the woman walked over to us and apologized. “I’m sorry if I embarrassed you,” she said, “but I’m a graduate student in Psychology and I’m studying human reaction to embarrassing situations”. At the top of his lungs Justin responded, “What do you mean two hundred dollars an hour in your room upstairs?!!” -------------------------------------------------------------A middle-aged woman had a heart attack and was taken to the hospital. While on the operating table, she had a neardeath experience. Seeing God, she asked, “Is my time up?” God said, “No, you have another 30 years, two months and eight days to live” Upon hearing the good news, the woman decided to stay in the hospital and have a face-lift, liposuction and tummy tuck. She figured she might as well look her best since she was in it for the long haul. After her last operation, she was released from the hospital. While crossing the street on her way home, she was struck by an ambulance and killed. Arriving in front of God, she demanded, “I thought you said I had another 30 years? Why didn’t you pull me out of the path of that ambulance?” God replied, “Girl, I didn’t recognize you!” 28

He had been given special powers by a local witch. One day he finally ventured out of the lake to get his first glimpse of the world outside. The first thing he saw was a bear chasing a rabbit (this went on all day, every day) and so he called out to them and asked them to stop. Then he said to them: “I am a magical frog and since you are the first two animals I have ever seen, I am going to grant you both three wishes. You will each take turns using them and you have to use them now.” The bear (being greedy) went first. I would like for every bear in this forest to be female except for me.” A magical sound and it was done. Then the rabbit. “I would like a helmet.” This confused both the frog and the bear, but after a magical sound there was a helmet. It was the bear’s turn again. “I would like for every bear in the neighboring forest to be female.” A magical sound and it was done. The rabbit went again. “I would like a motorcycle.” Both the frog and the bear wondered why the rabbit didn’t just ask for a lot of money with which he could buy himself a motorcycle, but after a magical sound there was a motorcycle. The bear took his last wish. “I would like for all the bears in the world to be female except for me.” A magical sound and it was done. The rabbit then put on his helmet, started up the motorcycle, and said “I wish this bear was gay” and took off like a bat out of hell.
