February 2016
Groundhog Day is a traditional holiday celebrated on February 2nd. According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, then spring will come early; if it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow, and the winter weather will hang around for six more weeks. Will Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow or not? I kinda hope so because I LOVE snow! I think we have had a pretty mild winter so far except for the little bit of snow we got this morning that was supposed to be 4-8 inches but ended up being a dusting, so disappointing :) If you look at the long range forecast, there is no more snow or frigid temps forecasted for the rest of the winter (if you trust the forecasters) so the love of your life may not be stored for as long as you thought it might be. Speaking of the love of your life… be sure that you check out our advertisers ads this month, some are offering sweet deals the month of February, like marked down preowned bikes, service specials, discounts on parts and apparel, and much more. You can find something for everyone you love! If you love bike shows, you don’t want to miss Easyriders Bike Show Tour, the hottest custom motorcycle show in America, Saturday, February 6th at the Nashville Music City Center. We will have a booth set up so stop by and say “hi”, pick up a copy of the February issue, get your Thunder Roads Tennessee apparel, register to win one of five gift bags, and spin our prize wheel for a chance to win some cool stuff, so PARTY at our booth! If you’re still looking to party after the show, Nashville Bike Week will be sponsoring a Bike Show After Party at Skully’s Saloon featuring Geneva at 9:00pm and will have tons of giveaways, see their ad in this issue for all the details. We have had a lot of people ask about tickets to Nashville Bike Week 2017, so here it is: Tickets will be $350 for the 10 day rally, but if you purchase your tickets in advance, during the limited time “Early Bird” special, they are $150 for 10 days. Now, if you wait to purchase daily tickets, they will range from $50-$80 depending on the headlining band, so $150 is a GREAT deal for 10 days and that includes, 1 tent camping spot with no electric or water hookup (there are other options available), one car parking pass per order, and access to the full 10-day Nashville Bike Week experience. Nashville Bike Week hosted by the Loretta Lynn’s Ranch features over 2,800 acres of bikes, food, music, stunt shows, over $200,000 in giveaways, 200 vendors at the Ranch, camping, motorcycle shows and motorcycle games. The Ives Brothers are coming to perform and bringing their wall of death, there will be 4 stages with some of the country’s top performers. There will be daily rides, air shows, bikini contest, and burn out contests. It will be an unbelievable event like no other! Please remember this event is 10 days! They are booking top performers and top music acts. During Nashville Bike Week, downtown Nashville will have designated parking exclusively for people attending their event. Additionally, there will be restaurants, bars, and venues all over Middle Tennessee and Nashville that will have special events for people attending Nashville Bike Week. Flip the Switch Gen 1:26 “And God said, Let us make man in our IMAGE, after our LIKENESS, and let them have DOMINION over all the earth…over every living thing that moves upon the earth.” Luke 9:1 “Jesus gave them POWER and AUTHORITY over ALL devils and to cure diseases.” We Christians must come to the conclusion that God’s Word is true and we either believe it or we don’t. This is the very foundation of our faith. We may confess that it is true but our actions show something else. 1. If we are created in the “Image” of God, then we have a “creative power” like God. 2. If we have been given “Dominion” then we are in control over “All Things on the Earth.” 3. If we have been given “Power & Authority over all devils and to cure diseases” then why is there so much violence, sickness and death in the world? The electric power that runs through your home is very similar to God’s power that He has authorized us to use. In order for the benefits of electric power to work, “YOU must Flip the Switch!” The electric power company will not come out and turn on the switch to your TV. We have the right to “Flip the Switch” and if we don’t, it is just wasted power. When God gave us “Dominion, power & Authority over all the earth,” He left us in charge. We represent God in this earth. I have been asked many times these aged old questions by unbelievers; If God is real then why do children die, why is there so mush sickness in the world, why are there so many wars? God doesn’t allow it, WE DO! God left us in charge and we just have not “Flipped the Switch” yet. Those plastic plugs that go in the electric wall sockets are to protect children from sticking an object into it and hurting the child, that’s where the Body of Christ is today. We refuse to grow up spiritually; therefore, we can’t walk in the “Authority” that God left us with. Gal.4:1 “The heir as long as he is a child, differs nothing from a servant though he be lord of all.” February 2016
1 Cor.13:11 “When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.” There are two prayers that will never be answered: 1. Asking God to do something He has already done! 2. Asking God to do something He has told us to do! This “Dominion, Power & Authority” has been given to us by the “Grace of God.” We didn’t do anything to deserve it. “If you try and earn it, you’ll try to perform it.” Rom. 5:20 “…where SIN abounds, GRACE much more abounds.” When some of these mass shootings (SIN) occur, we have a tendency to focus more on the tragedy and give our creative voice to it. But God promised us that “where sin abounds, Grace much more abounds.” We must be more focused on the Grace of God than the sin of the world. We should stand on our “Dominion, Power & Authority” that has been given to us. Instead of telling God about our problems, start telling your problems about your God! It’s time for God’s people to “Flip the Switch on” at home, on the job, in the Church, and in our government. Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

History of Motorcycles Part 12 By the time America reached the decade of the World Wide Web we had seen the rise of Hip-Hop and the thawing of the Cold War. We would also have the misfortune of witnessing firsthand an increase in terroristic acts in our nation, with the World Trade Center and Oklahoma City bombings…not that I’m an expert on the subject, but maybe if our Fearless leader at the time would have been a tad more focused on his job duties and a little less enamored with a young intern named Lewinsky things could have evolved a little differently. Anyway, cigars and mass murderers aside, the motorcycle continued to forge ahead. As I mentioned before, during the 1990’s we saw the motorcycle industry turn its focus towards improving upon the two-wheeled beauties that we had grown to love so much. And these improvements helped to further entrench the motorcycle and the lifestyle surrounding it into mainstream America.

In spite of its sumptuous use of carbon and light alloy, it weighed in at nearly 500 pounds. 1993 was another lucrative year for Honda with the release of the CBR900RR (Fireblade). This model combined the power of an open class motorcycle with the weight and handling of a 600, and proceeded to stun the sport bike world. Finally, Honda introduced the radical EXP-2 in 1995. This bike was a two-stroke 400 cc model that became “proof-of-concept” for company that a cleaner burning and more powerful two-stroke engine was attainable.
Yamaha didn’t slow down during the 90’s either. 1991 brought about the release of the FJ1200A, it came standard with anti-lock brakes, and it set the standard for sports-touring bikes during the decade. cooling and packed on a few pounds. 1995 was a better year for the company, when the beloved Bandit 1200…a 16 valve 1156 cc oil/water cooled model appeared on the motorcycle scene. But Suzuki didn’t stop there, in 1996 they released the all new GSX-R750 which was coined the “turning point model” thanks to its twin – spar frame instead of the older double cradle frame. The engine was also redesigned and featured 3 piece crank cases, chrome plated cylinders, and a side-mount cam chain, as well as the Suzuki Ram Air Direct (SRAD) system. The company’s first sport bike with a V-twin engine came in the form of the TL1000S in 1997, followed by the legendary SV650 “Hayabusa” in 1999. The Hayabusa sported an aluminum frame and a liquid cooled 90 degree V-twin DOHC 4 valve engine. year for firsts in the H-D family, with the addition of the Ultra Classic Electra Glide. This bike would become the first in Harley history to be a production bike with sequential port electronic fuel injection. The next three years Harley-Davidson would spend expanding its ever evolving corporation by opening new factories in Milwaukee, Menomonee Falls, Kansas City, and even Mahaus, Brazil…which just happened to be the first operations to ever take place outside of the U.S. for the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. Harley rounded out the decade by sprucing up the “Dyna” and “Touring” motorcycle families by upgrading them to include the new twin cam 88 engines. Seems pretty cut and dry…except for a long lost friend in the industry…or maybe that’s long lost foe, seems to be attempting a bit of a comeback towards the close of the era. 1998 brings about the revival of brand exclusive production for a former competitor in the American motorcycle market. A merger of 9 companies ultimately formed the Indian Motorcycle Company of America (IMCA), and they opened a production facility in Gilroy, California starting with production of Scout, Chief, and Spirit models powered by engines acquired from S & S Cycle Inc.
So it’s pretty clear that the Japanese were hard at work during the 90’s, but what were our local boys up to at the time? I took Lois to him and discussed the direction I wanted to take with the paint. The end result was a two tone Indian Chief in Candy Indian Red and True White Pearl. The hand painted tank War Bonnet was done in Red Variegated Gold Leaf. Several engine accent pieces were also trimmed out in the red gold leaf. Lois was saddled with a 2014 era tan leather Indian seat that I dyed Saddle Tan to give it a darker and deeper look. The mini trunk was originally on a much older Gilroy Indian and was also dyed by me to match the seat. To give Lois a more aggressive posture she was switched to an adjustable bleed and feed air-ride suspension. Which gives me the ability to slam the bike to the ground when parked or at shows. To complement that look beach bars were added. The bike features many chrome accessories from Indian, Aeromach, and Azzkikr Customs. For performance the air intake was changed out to a Thunder Stroke High Flow Intake. The exhaust was changed to a Freedom Performance True Dual SharkTail Exhaust system. Indian Stage-2 performance cams were added. Finally a Power Commander V Fuel Injection Module was installed. After the upgrades the bike was custom Dyno mapped by Classic Motorcycle Performance of Gallatin. I’m really proud of Lois and in the end I believe she epitomizes many of my mom’s best traits; loud, powerful, timeless, and beautiful. CHANGING OIL
I
like spending quality time with my motorcycle, it’s therapeutic to me. Among other things, it helps me keep an eye out for any potential problems, hopefully before they become real problems. Changing the oil in a motorcycle is basic maintenance, and besides a good detailed wash, the process makes you look at more of your bike than you probably would otherwise. Some people are very comfortable doing this, but some may want to try but don’t know where to start. Anytime you decide to work on your motorcycle, always consult the service manual for your model. This is meant to be general instructions without going into detail or specifics, aimed at first timers. Most American V-Twins have 3 separate fluids to drain and fill, and some others only have 1. If your bike only has 1 oil, then these general directions for an oil change will also change your transmission and drive, if you have 3 fluids to change we’ll get to the other 2 in a minute. Before you start, it’s a good idea to go ride around for about 10 minutes to get the oils warm, but be careful, things are going to be hot, I go ride around for a few minutes, then let things cool off so that they are still warm, then I get started. While things are cooling off is a good time to get all the tools and parts you will need together. You will need enough of the correct oil to refill the engine, a filter, a new crush washer for the drain plug, a drain pan, oil filter wrench, and a proper sized wrench, either socket or combination for your drain plug. When the drain plug is warm but not super-hot, use the wrench to loosen it to the point you can turn it with your fingers, place the drain pan under the hole, and finish taking the drain plug out by hand. On H-D models, you shouldn’t take the sump plug out, on Indians you do, consult the manual for your model. Try to hold on to the plug, digging through the old oil for the plug is not fun. Once the oil is draining, I check the magnetic drain plug for excess metal shavings, a very few to none are normal, and then I get ready to remove the
February 2016
filter. Harley Touring bikes are notorious for pouring oil all over the place when you take the oil filter off. There are lots of tricks, and even some specialized drain pans you can buy to make this a much cleaner situation. You can look some of them up on the internet, I use a cut down ½ gallon milk jug but use whatever you think works best. Before you put the new filter on, be sure to lubricate the rubber seal with new oil, if you don’t you could tear the seal. When the filter makes contact with the housing, turn it ¾ to 1 full turn more. As with the drain plugs, be careful not to overtighten the filter. After the filter is on, check the crush washer on the drain plug, you don’t need to change it every oil change, but they’re cheap and it’s not a bad idea. Once you are sure all of the holes are plugged back up and torqued correctly, add slightly less, like maybe ½ quart less than the correct amount of oil back in the oil fill hole. Don’t bother checking it at this point because it will show over filled until you start the engine and some of the oil fills the filter. After you start it let it run for a couple of minutes and make sure you have good oil pressure and check for leaks, then you can turn it off and top off as needed. Now on to the primary and transmission if you have separate drains and fills for them, if you don’t, you’re done. The process is the same for both, very simply out with the old and in with the new. Find the primary drain for your model take it out and let it drain. Same for the transmissions, use the pan to drain both, checking both magnetic plugs for excess metal, when they are drained, refill with the specified amount. Changing your engine, primary, and transmission fluids if you have them is like a gateway drug. Once you master this, you will probably want to start tackling other maintenance jobs. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. I’m not a mechanic, nor did I stay at any hotel that makes me smarter than anyone else. These are just suggestions and tips sent in by readers, or answers to questions we have received. If you disagree with any of these tips, don’t use them. We are not responsible for your desire to learn more about your motorcycle and spend countless hours in the garage or shed working on it.

Lady Rider
Karen Knight Parker For many years I rode behind my husband as a passenger and one day I decided I wanted my own motorcycle. I went to Rusty and said I want a Moped. He looked at me like a dog turns his head when you say something weird and said a “Moped”, your leathers will look funny with you riding on a Moped, so I decided to look at Harleys. I didn’t know how to ride so I went to Smoky Mountain H-D Riding Academy in Maryville and took their New Rider course and aced it. We shopped for Harleys and I decided on a 2005 Harley Sportster Custom. My husband had a 2005 Road King and a couple of years later I upgraded to a new 2007 Harley Softail Deluxe. I loved this bike and customized it to my liking. My husband upgraded his Road King in 2011 to a new Street Glide and after watching him jam to the beat of music, I couldn’t resist and told him I needed a Street Glide. So I bought a 2011 Street Glide and have loved every minute of it and riding with him. I have upgraded my wheels and added a lot of bling to it and love it. We go to Panama City Beach, FL for Thunder on the Beach rallies in May and October and have been for years. We plan on taking more road trips in 2016 and I can’t wait. If you have ever wanted to ride your own bike, Do It… it’s great!!! We would love to hear YOUR story! ALL ladies are welcome and encouraged to join and contribute to our monthly Lady Rider column. by “Rebel Ron” Meet two nice folks who are long time riders and who obviously love to see America on two wheels. They are Michigan natives Jean & Gary Fisher who now live in good ol’ Tennessee. I got to know them from S & G Custom Cycles in Columbia and rode with them on the Annual Frosty Balls & Frigid Nipples ride on January 1st. I was amazed at their story of riding a 1981 Honda CX 500 from Saginaw, MI to a friend’s wedding in Seattle in 1983. You can’t help but laugh at some of the things they encountered but they persevered through it all. Everything from nearly running out of gas in N. Dakota only to learn the gas stations don’t open on Sunday to enduring zero temps while riding over Bear Tooth Pass in Montana while it was snowing. It was a little tough for the inexperienced riders who had two small children at home. But the one thing they had going for them was being young and in love. One can put up with a lot then and enjoy it too. Look at their faces in the 33 year old photos and you’ll see. The Fishers also saw some amazing sites along the way. The Painted Canyon, Bear Tooth’s Hwy & Pass, Yellow Stone National park and so much more. One can imagine the look on the friend’s faces when our adventurers pulled up on their bike after such a long ride and windy ride. The ladies must have gasped to see that Jean only had a small bag with few of the things she needed for the wedding. Later the couple took a more leisurely ride back to Mich. and the little Honda acquired 6,108 miles on it during the 13 day ride. They would put 80K miles on the CX 500 before trading it in on a 1993 Honda Aspencade and traveling far and wide together on it. They also racked up miles on a 2002 Kawasaki Concourse before finally settling on a 2014 Can-Am Spyder. They are headed West this year again but with much more experience and better prepared than that first trip so many miles and smiles ago. Good luck on future rides you two and stay safe and happy.

Golden Isles
Judy and I like to travel. In 2015, we traveled 85 days and I will try to share some of the places and things I think you might enjoy seeing. America is truly beautiful. US Hwy 17 starts in Punta Gorda FL and ends at Winchester Va. It parallels I-95, up the Atlantic coast from Jacksonville FL, through Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and into southeastern North Carolina. Aptly named the Coastal Highway, it is a beautiful motorcycle ride through many historical areas little changed from before the Civil War (known in this area as “the recent unpleasantness”). As US 17 goes through Lakeland FL, site of the 2016 HOG Rally, Oct 26-29, National HOG Members might want to add this ride onto the rally. As we traveled this area in December, we actually cruised instead of riding from Fernandina Beach (Amelia Island) to Charleston, but a ride is in the future. Amelia Island is tiny, only 2 miles wide and 13 miles long and accessed by bridge from Jacksonville. Much of the island remains nearly pristine as it was hundreds of years ago. It includes 13 miles of sand beaches, where hunting shells and shark’s teeth is a prime activity. Be sure to visit the Amelia Island Museum of History and take the one hour “Eight Flags Tour” (including the Green Cross and Mexico!) before visiting the 50 block historic district and the 1881 lighthouse. If you can make advanced reservations, it’s a worthwhile trip to Cumberland Island National Seashore (only 200 visitors per day). This game preserve is kept totally natural, including free roaming horses, which receive no care. In Georgia, the barrier islands are named “The Golden Isles”. There are two versions of the name, firstly due to pirates gold and secondly due to the golden color of the salt grass during most of the year. Jekyll Island is reached from US 17 by GA 520. In 1886 millionaires discovered this island and built the Jekyll Is-
20
land Club, surrounded by mansions (called cottages). After the Club closed in 1942, as the descendants moved their retreats to other locations, the state of Georgia bought the island. Now you can tour the National Historic District, including these “cottages” and even stay at the former Club. St. Simons Island is accessible from Brunswick via bridges. Of historical significance is the Bloody Marsh. At the Bloody Marsh Battle Site on July 7th, 1742, an outnumbered force of British troops ambushed and defeated Spanish troops, halting a planned attack on Fort Frederica, which once and for all ended Spain’s claims to the Georgia territory. In Brunswick, Credle’s Adventures, on Hwy 17 S, behind the Marshside Restaurant, provides a tour of the marshes on the Lady Jane Shrimp Boat, where the crew will drag the bottom, retrieving the life in the marsh and letting you hold most of it. Sapelo Island is reachable by ferry from the Sapelo Island Visitors Center, as there is no bridge. Excluding land owned by descendants of former slaves of Thomas Spalding, in Hog Hummock, the islands are owned by the State of Georgia. A visit to the island is filled with history of these descendants. A tour of Savannah’s Historic District with its famous squares, Cotton Exchange, and Factor’s Walk, as well as the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum is a must do. In addition, Savannah is a great place to visit the many bars and restaurants. Hilton Head, SC is a resort for the well-todo, so if you aren’t in to golf, there are better places to spend your time. The homes here are modern and not exciting. A carriage ride in Beaufort SC will show many pre-Civil War homes. These homes have the basic architecture, with the front facing the water and reserved for entertaining, while the

rear for living. The placement of the house, facing the water, allowed for cool breezes to combat the steamy summer temperatures. Ceilings of the porches are usually painted blue to keep the haints away. Beaufort’s architecture was spared by the “Great Skedaddle” where the owners “Skedaddled” ahead of the Union troop’s arrival. A tour of the Lady’s Island, visit the Gullah (freed slaves) communities to learn about the Penn School, where slaves were educated, when it was illegal to do so. This provides an opportunity to learn about the real life of Southern planters and their slaves.

Finally in Charleston, once again the pre-Civil War architecture was saved. This time it was due to the friendship of Juliette Gordon Lowe’s (founder of the Girl Scouts) mother and General Sherman. He couldn’t burn their home, so he couldn’t burn any. Stay in one of the historic bed and breakfasts and enjoy the always bustling City Market. Hope you will take an opportunity to visit some of these historic cities. As expected, Southern food and hospitality, served up with a rich history, is always in style. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! The Famous “Scoreboard Smokehouse Bar and Grill” One of the places I love to ride to when I’m in Nashville is the Scoreboard Smokehouse Bar and Grill at 2408 Music Valley Drive, Nashville, TN 37214. The Scoreboard was established in 1996 and started growing when the Opryland theme park became a leading tourist attraction in Nashville. That was before the Predators or Titans arrived in town. The Scoreboard built its reputation on good food, paired with cold beer and tasty cocktails. The signature recipes were assisted by former Sheriff of Davidson County, Fate Thomas. The Scoreboard was filled with characters like Fate, and a cross section people who made Nashville a unique and wonderful place to live. It truly became a locals place to eat BBQ for lunch and have a cold beer and a good time after 5pm. As more and more sports bars began to pop up the Scoreboard also led the way by catering to the growing biker community. Partnering with local H.O.G. chapters it created long lasting friendships with Bubba Boswell, Gary Bagwell and literally hundreds of other Harley riding friends. Eric Kyle, local president of the MC Revolution, Barrett Hobbs and the Scoreboard formed a long lasting friendship and launched one of the most successful full spectrum bike nights in Nashville. These bike nights surpassed 800 bikes in attendance on Thursday nights. Bike Night featured midget wrestling, stunt shows and everything in between. The Scoreboard has continued its relationship through the years with H.O.G, even hosting an event with close to 5000 attendees. It has also supported the annual toy run and other charities for more than 15 years. A few years ago the Scoreboard added outdoor decks, patios and stages that are perfect for Friday nights and Saturday afternoons and make it a great place to stop and hang while you’re out riding.
February 2016
They have one of the largest parking lots in town and you can always park where you can keep an eye on your bike. Like everything the Scoreboard continues to change with the times. They have smoking and non-smoking areas with indoor and outdoor bars. Literally, they have something for everyone. The past 7 or 8 years the Scoreboard Smokehouse has slowly built a nationwide reputation for Hot Chicken. Their hot chicken has been featured on the Food Network’s “Heat Seekers” and countless articles have been written about it. They have temperatures that range from Sissy to Hiroshima Hot; there is a temperature for everyone. One of their bestselling Hot Chicken items is their Bitchen Butch Bites, which are respectfully named after a crotchety regular, Butch Wilkerson. They also have Hot Chicken and Waffles, Black Bean burgers, Real Buffalo Burgers, Texas Brisket, a great Sausage sandwich, a Fighting Irish Dip and much more. I know they help me test the load bearing ability of my bike’s suspension. Don’t mush a tire - Keep your tire pressure up!! Although on top of Hot Chicken, Scoreboard is best known for BBQ ribs, wings, burgers and pizza. One longtime Scoreboard team member who entertains on the stage is Bobby Johnson. His namesake is the “Bobby J” Burrito. Bobby heads up the award winning songwriters and entertainers on a rotating basis both inside and on the deck. Randy Travis, Blake Shelton, Lee Brice, Jon Pardi, and Mickey Gilley have all been known to pop in from time to time. I can verify the music is top notch and the bands like to rock. This year they will again focus very heavily on food and drink specials for motorcycle riders on the weekends. The folks who own the Scoreboard have also sister venues. There is John A’s in the Music Valley Area and they have Doc Holliday’s, Bootleggers Inn and the Whiskey Bent Saloon downtown. You can check out what’s happening this month at http://scoreboardbar.net/ , Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ScoreboardRestaurantAndSportsBar or you can call them at Phone #: 615-883-3866. If you come in to the Scoreboard and see me please come up and tell me your favorite places to go when you’re hungry and thirsty. Will Ride to Eat will be an ongoing new article in Thunder Roads Magazine and we want to put the spotlight on the great history and variety of Tennessee’s biker friendly establishments.

Bullet Points TN SENATE BILL 1736 Dolores Graham (R-Somerville) has introduced a bill that would hold the owners of establishments who choose to prevent legal Carry Permit Holders from having their firearm on them while in the “Gun Free Zone”, responsible. If you have gone through the legal process to be a Concealed Carry Permit holder you have proven to the State you are not only well versed on the laws that pertain to carrying a firearm, but that you can, with accuracy, hit a target that may be a threat. While the process is not a hard one it is a necessary one in order for you to fully understand the situation in which you are putting yourself by having a Carry Permit. By doing a simple Google search I was able to find LegisScan, which gives you an idea of the Bill that has been introduced in TN on the 16th of January 2016. Summary; as introduced, it establishes that if a person or entity posts to prohibit the possession of firearms on their property, the posting entity, for purposes of liability, assumes custodial responsibility for the safety and defense of any handgun carry permit holder harmed while on the posted property. - Amends TCA Title 39, Chapter 17, Part 13. Having done some research on this Bill I understand the meaning and gist of this bill to be this. If you as a legal Carry Permit holder are injured on property of a posted establishment the owner of the establishment or business can be held liable for your injuries or death. The bill allows for lawsuits in the case of harm done by “invitees”, employees, trespassers, wild animals and “defensible man-made and natural hazards.” Having gone to many restaurants while carrying my firearm I have often seen the obscure sign randomly placed that prohibits firearms. Trying to always be respectful of the owners I will take my firearm and lock it in my vehicle. I have never been a fan of giving up my Second Amendment rights in any situation, but it is the prerogative of the establishment owners whether or not I can carry a firearm on their property. What will likely come out of this Bill is controversy. I tried to take a step back and look at this from multiple angles. The Good; from the gun owner’s perspective, this legislation is positive, as it may encourage some posted
February 2016
businesses to re-think their decision. Gun owners and Carry permit holders may be able to maintain the standard which they have agreed to, by keeping a firearm on them and in a safe manner in more places. I personally like this bill as it allows me to protect the people in my life from the unknown harm that can occur in today’s crazy world (reason I acquired my permit in the first place). Bills like these could prevent incidents that otherwise could have gone on for long periods of time while responders react to the calls and assess the situation. Active shooter, animal attacks, and random violence are things that this bill is trying to address within our TN communities. The Bad; TN being an open Carry State I can see us as gun owners and Second amendment supporters shooting ourselves in the foot (proverbially of course). By not being quiet professionals in our daily lives we as gun owners tend to take these issues to the extreme. Lawsuits (not being fun for anyone) could become long and drawn out in the TN courts with the bill. Worst of all could be the political rhetoric that would come with these tragic incidents and we could loose sight of what truly matters and that is the people involved. With this bill it is important to know that you do not get a free pass as a Carry Permit holder. You are still held to the same laws and regulations that come with the permit. If an establishment is legally required to be a gun free zone there are no legal repercussions of violence. Schools and courthouses will remain gun free as well as free from responsibility that comes with this bill. Think, Train, and Act if you are a Carry Permit holder do the right things and train hard, Think about what you can do in dangerous situations and Act. All of the ten senior members of the Board of Directors of the company were called into the Chairman’s office one by one until only Bob, the junior member, was left sitting outside. Finally it was his turn to be summoned. He entered the office to find the chairman and the ten other directors seated around a table. He was invited to join them, which he did. As soon as he had sat down the chairman turned to Bob looking him squarely in the eye, and with a stern voice, asked, “Have you ever had sex with Ms. Foyt, my Secretary?” “Oh, no sir, positively not!” Bob replied. “Are you absolutely sure?” asked the chairman “Honest, I’ve never been close enough to even touch her!” “You’d swear to that?” “Yes, I swear I’ve never had sex with Ms. Foyt anytime, anywhere.” “Good, then by process of elimination; you’re the one that needs to fire her. Redneck Security System: When out of town, leave note on door: Bubba: Me and Earl went to town for more beer & ammo. Be back in an hour. Don’t mess w the pitts. They got the mailman this morning and messed him up real bad. Don’t think Mangler was involved but hard to tell with all the blood. Had to put them all inside house in case cops come. Best to wait outside. Be right back buddy. Goober So I finally landed a job as a Smart-Mart Greeter, which is a good find for many retirees, unfortunately I lasted less than a day. About two hours into my first day on the job a very loud, unattractive, mean-acting woman walked into the store with her two kids, yelling obscenities at them all the way through the entrance. Per my greeter training manual I said pleasantly, “Good morning and welcome to Smart-Mart.” “Nice children you have there. Are they twins?” The ugly woman stopped yelling long enough to say, “Hell no, they aint twins. The oldest one is 9, and the other one is 7. Why the hell would you think they’re twins? Do you need glasses, or are you just plain stupid?” So I replied, “I’m neither in need of glasses nor stupid, madam. I just literally could not believe someone actually slept with you twice. Have a good day and thank you for shopping at Smart-Mart.” My supervisor said I probably wasn’t cut out for this line of work. I think I’ll try the mattress store that just opened up down the road. Booger died in a fire and his body was burned apparently beyond recognition. The morgue needed someone to identify the body, so they sent

for his two best friends, Cooter and Gomer. The three men had always done everything together. Cooter arrived first, and when the Mortician pulled back the sheet, Cooter said, ‘Yup, his face is burned up pretty bad. You better roll him over.’ The Mortician rolled him over and Cooter said, ‘Nope, aint Booger.’ The Mortician thought this was rather strange. So, he brought Gomer in to confirm the identity of the body. Gomer looked at the body and said, ‘Yup, he’s pretty well burnt up. Roll him over.’ The Mortician rolled him over and Gomer said, ‘No, that can’t be Booger ‘ The mortician asked, ‘How can you tell?’ Gomer said, ‘Well, Booger had two buttholes.’ ‘What? He had two buttholes!!?’ exclaimed the Mortician. ‘Yup, we never seen ‘em, but everywhere we went, everybody always used to say: ‘There’s Booger with the two buttholes.’ When I was 13, I hoped that one day I would have a girlfriend with big boobs. When I was 16 I got a girlfriend with big boobs, but there was no passion, so I decided I needed a passionate girl with a zest for life. In college I dated a passionate girl, but she was too emotional. Everything was an emergency; she was a drama queen, cried all the time and threatened suicide. So I decided I needed a girl with stability. When I was 25 I found a very stable girl but she was boring. She was totally predictable and never got excited about anything. Life became so dull that I decided that I needed a girl with some excitement. When I was 28 I found an exciting girl, but I couldn’t keep up with her. She rushed from one thing to another, never settling on anything. She did mad impetuous things and made me miserable as often as happy. She was great fun initially and very energetic, but directionless. So I decided to find a girl with some real ambition. When I turned 30, I found a smart ambitious girl with her feet planted firmly on the ground, so I married her. She was so ambitious that she divorced me and took everything I owned. I am older and much wiser now, and I am just once again simply looking for a girl with big boobs. I was leaving a Valentine’s Day party and may have had one too many “lover’s martini’s”. I saw the flashing lights and heard the siren.... Cop: Please turn off the truck and exit the vehicle. Me: I’m too drunk; why don’t you get in.

I heard today that gasoline may keep going down in cost until it gets close to $1 per gallon this year. I told my daughter and the first thing out of her mouth was – “Road Trip!!!” Well a road trip is a great thought particularly if you are planning a bike trip. I have a couple of riding buddies who I get together with a couple of times a month to solve the world’s problems, debate the benefits of surrendering our constitutional rights to the federal government, discuss the pitfalls of parenting and if we can fit it in – where we are going to ride in the upcoming year. To tell the truth we may actually spend more time evaluating the amount of hops in what we’re drinking and where to ride than we do the other stuff. A man has to have priorities! I guess we figure that if someone wants to take away one of our constitutional rights they’ll eventually have to set foot in our front yard. At that point we can fully explain the difficulties they face. During our most recent session we discussed some long rides, adult bike events and looked at hitting a motorcycle race or two. The 2016 AMA Pro Flat Track season will kick off with a doubleheader at the Daytona Flat Track during Daytona’s Bike Week festivities. The twin short track races will be at the “World Center of Racing” on Thursday and Friday, March 10 & 11. If you go to bike week why not check out the races? Nothing against Daytona but we don’t go there much. I guess it has something to do with riding motorcycles in a state that’s over run with cane carrying blue hairs from New York. They get confused over which pedal is the brake and which is the gas. To be safe we looked at going to one of the Harley flat track races in Springfield, Illinois. They race at the State Fairgrounds on May 28-29 and September 3-4. The Oklahoma City Mile has been added to the 2016 AMA Pro Flat Track schedule with racing on Saturday, June 18 at the newly renovated Remington Park. That would be someplace new to ride. If you haven’t been to a dirt track motorcycle race you are in for a treat. It’s usually a great ride to get there and back, the off track parties are a ball and the races will have your head February 2016
spinning. It’s a real hoot!!! Other options are all of the rallies and biker events around this part of the country or you can head farther out and see something new. If you have time you could do a long cross country trip. If you were lucky enough to win the 1.3 billion dollar power ball lottery you could really travel. At $1 a gallon you could buy 1.3 billion gallons of gas. 35 miles to the gallon and riding an average of 700 miles a day you’d use 20 gallons of gas a day. On 20 gallons a day you’d be able to ride for 65,000,000 days or in other words – 178,000 years. If you didn’t want to ride that many days in a row you could split the money between bike gas, route 66 type motels, burger joints and biker bars. You’d probably still be able to ride 60,000 years or more and not hit the same place twice. How cool. Isn’t Donald Trump a billionaire? How come he doesn’t have a motorcycle and why do I see him on the same three or four TV channels? You’d think with that much money he’d have a more exciting lifestyle. Maybe he’ll read this article and come to a flat track race. He needs to be more assertive. On a bike you’re in control. In a business jet you’re just cargo! Even if we missed the big Powerball jackpot we can still hit the road more this year. We need to get with it though. Russia is taking over countries to control 40% of the world’s oil. Without pushback from the kids in Washington we’re sure to pay bigger bucks for gas in the not too distant future. I’ve also noticed that after 10 years the interest rates are starting to climb. Pretty sure that will continue because of the huge national debt. If you have a long trip you want to make, this would be the year to do it. The cost of a vacation trip won’t get any lower than it is this year. The only downside is that a whole lot of other people are going to take advantage of the low gas prices too. If you need reservations I’d jump on those quickly before the four wheelers book everything. Let’s go Ride!! Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. PRODUCT REVIEW:
SECOND CHANCE MED BIKER BLOWOUT KIT If you ride a motorcycle you assume a certain amount of risk, we all know it, we never talk about it, but it’s always there. A lot of us wear a helmet because of it and some of us wear boots and/or gloves, and a few wear atgatt, (all the gear all the time) but the risk is the same for all of us. I always carry a small first aid kit on my bike, I never want to use it, but someday I may need to, either on myself or someone else. For me to carry it it has to be small but effective. The one I’ve been carrying in the corner of my saddlebag for the past several months is the “Biker Med Kit” from Second Chance Med. 2Cmed, is a veteran owned Tennessee business. The owner, a former Special Forces Medical Sergeant with many years of combat experience, used years of third world experience with motorcycles and the accidents that came with them to develop systems initially to help his fellow soldiers.
thing you will see is the R.A.T.S. Tourniquet. 2Cmed chose the RATS Tourniquet (Rapid Application Tourniquet System) for its flexibility, it can be used on any limb from a big guy’s thigh, down to a child’s arm. Other tourniquets
available are limited, or come in different sizes. Having used all types of tourniquets in real world situations 2Cmed decided RATs works on everyone every time.
Motorcycles are the most widely used method of transportation in third world countries (bikes are cheap, and gas is expensive). Having seen nearly 1000 motorcycle incidents in a 19-year career, and what he learned from them, the Biker Med Kit was born. What I like is that they developed the kits with a minimalist attitude so they contain only the things you need most in a life or death emergency in a very small package. The whole kit is about the size of both fists together. The kit is very well thought out, 2Cmed researched and used past experience to design, and fill a purpose built bag with the items you would need most until help arrives. The contents are focused on treating some of the traumas that can happen riding motorcycles. The first 36
Let’s talk Tourniquets and medical training for a moment. Tourniquets are ONLY for life over limb situations, you can cause severe damage to a person while using a tourniquet so make sure you are properly trained not only on tourniquets but any medical item you plan on carrying. It does no good to have lifesaving items and no idea how to use them and a basic first aid class is a good idea for everyone. On the top of the pouch you will find Kerlex, or Compressed gauze. Compressed Gauze is the crescent wrench of the medical world. You can wrap wounds, protect breaks, cover road rash, your imagination is the only limit. Under the gauze are two 3” ace wraps. With the ace wraps you can wrap up the gauze, pad wounds, and make splints to secure broken bones. Under those you will find Band-Aids, 4” gauze pads, and trauma sheers. What you don’t see is some simple items that 2Cmed recommends you place in your pouch (don’t worry, they leave room) like an antibiotic ointment, some kind of pain management (ie; motrin, BC powder, Tylenol), and eye drops. I really like that the kit stays in the bottom corner of my saddlebag, isn’t in the way, but holds a lot of very useful things in a very small space. In fact, I’m going to buy the review sample they sent. There is no substitute for training and being prepared. 2Cmed also offers classes for your hog chapter, riding club, Bike night, or event to train your group on riding first aid. You can find the kits they offer or info about classes at http://www.secondchancemed.com or by emailing Travis at travis@secondchancemed.com check out some of their other products like the Trunk Can, RATs Tourniquet, and Trauma kit.

THE AIM/NCOM MOTORCYCLE E-NEWS SERVICE is brought to you by Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM), and is sponsored by the Law Offices of Richard M. NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)
NEW YEAR BRINGS NEW LEGISLATION Along with the new year comes an onslaught of new legislation, as new legislative sessions across the nation consider a myriad of motorcycle laws such as helmet legislation in ARIZONA that would charge riders a fee to ride without one. Prefiled on January 6, 2016, H.B. 2052 introduced by State Representative Dr. Randall Friese (D-Tucson) would modify their Under-18 helmet law to read; “An operator or passenger of a motorcycle, all-terrain vehicle or motor driven cycle who is at least eighteen years of age is exempt from the helmet requirement if the owner pays a (as yet undetermined) fee when registering their vehicle.” “A person who violates this section is subject to a civil penalty of five hundred dollars,” and a ‘portion’ of the fees collected from the pay-to-play p-pot plot would be “deposited in the Spinal and Head Injuries Trust Fund.” Meanwhile, in INDIANA S.B. 157 would “eliminate the portion of the motorcycle registration fee that is currently distributed to the spinal cord and brain injury fund.” MISSOURI is considering numerous motorcycle-related bills, including seven helmet bills; one would repeal the law for anyone 18 or over (HB1663), another would exempt motorcyclists 21 or older from wearing a helmet if they have appropriate health insurance coverage (HB1464), one “Prohibits law enforcement from stopping a motorcycle for failing to wear protective headgear” (HB1957), while (HB1371) treats the infraction as a secondary offense, requiring another reason to pull a rider over, and four separate bills concern autocycles and primarily exempts certain operators of motorcycles and motortricycles from wearing protective headgear (SB659, SB694, SB851 & SB1732). Three-wheelers are of concern in several states, as legislatures struggle with defining and regulating “autocycles,” and in KANSAS House Bill 2436 would allow persons to take a motorcycle license driving exam on a 3-wheeled motorcycle and would restrict such licenses to trikes. In NEW HAMPSHIRE, as in some other states, the state legislature will consider HB 1308 to allow motorcycles to travel between lanes of traffic in certain instances, a.k.a.; lane-splitting. HB1347 would “establish a committee to study sharing the road with bicycles and motorcycles.” Also in the Granite State, Senator Andrew Hosmer, a Democrat from Laconia, has introduced SB 360 to repeal the statute restricting handlebar height and legalize so-called “ape-hangers”. New Hampshire is currently among more than 30 states that limit the height of motorcycle handlebars. 40
Since 1967, existing statute prohibits handlebar grips “higher than the shoulder level of the driver when in the seat or saddle” and also prohibits riding a motorcycle with “improvised, defective, or repaired handlebars.” “I applaud Senator Hosmer for sponsoring this bill,” said Charlie St. Clair, executive director of the Laconia Motorcycle Week Association. “I have never heard the height of handlebars presented as a safety issue,” he told the Laconia Daily Sun. “There is no history of accidents caused by high bars.” Without a federal standard, the regulation of handlebars on motorcycles rests with the states. Currently, 12 states limit the height of handlebars to 15 inches above the saddle. 5 others require the handlebars to be below the height of the shoulder. Last summer, South Dakota, which hosts the annual Sturgis Rally became the most recent state to repeal its shoulder level statute. SHARE WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YOUR STATE “At our annual NCOM board meeting in November, the board discussed what information would be beneficial to share with attendees at our annual NCOM Convention in May,” says NCOM Board & Legislative Task Force member Annette Torrez, who is also chair of the New Mexico Motorcycle Rights Organization (NMMRO), adding that “We decided on a session on state legislative victories and defeats. We all face similar and different issues in each state during our legislative sessions, and by sharing the outcomes on bills that were sponsored, passed, failed and the details, we can learn from each other. By the sharing of information we may be able to advance many of the same victories or avoid the pitfalls faced.” The National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) welcomes your input, and encourages you to share your information with Annette Torrez at atorrez2@msn.com (505) 730-0435 and/or NCOM Board Member John Bilotta, also Operations Director of ABATE of Virginia, at abateregion3@yahoo.com. The 31st annual NCOM Convention will be held Mother’s Day weekend, May 5-8, 2016 at Harrah’s Resort, located at 777 Harrah’s Blvd in Atlantic City, New Jersey, so reserve your room now for the special NCOM rate of $109 by calling (888) 516-2215. To pre-register for the 2016 NCOM Convention, contact the National Coalition of Motorcyclists at (800) 525-5355 or visit www.ON-ABIKE.com. NCOM CONFERENCE CONVENES IN UNITY, COOPERATION & RESPECT The chill air in Kansas City, Missouri reverberated with the thunder of dozens of motorcycles as riders from a six-state area converged on the Holiday Inn KCI Airport November 21, 2015 for the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) Region 2 Conference, which comprises Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa. This year, the Conference was hosted by the newly-formed Missouri Confederation of Clubs and Independents, and chaired by NCOM Region 2 Co-Directors “Tiger Mike” Revere, President of Central OK District ABATE and Liaison to the Oklahoma Confederation of Clubs, and Tony Shepherd of ABATE of Missouri. Following is a conference report submitted by Tiger Mike: “Riders from the Region 2 member states were both excited and

thirsty for information on important issues, especially hoping for an update on the horrific Waco, TX event of May, 2015. Bikers were also apprehensive about whether the Waco tragedy might negatively impact attendance. As it turned out, the opposite was true, featuring a standing-room only crowd! The Conference convened off with “Tiger Mike” Revere and Tony Shepherd, NCOM Region 2 Directors, welcoming attendees and addressing “Freedom of the Road throughout the Nation”, followed by NCOM Executive Coordinator “Sarge” Matthews covering “Discrimination among Ourselves/Outlawing our Existence as We Know It”. NCOM Attorney Joey Lester covered Court Case Updates, including judicial victories regarding “No-Colors” Policies at Fairgrounds where Bikers are ejected because of their Patch Insignia. After lunch, attendees participated in a forum dealing with “The Tragedy of Waco”, featuring Joey Lester, TXCOC&I Chairman “Gimme Jimmy”, and Louie Nobs and Dwayne Gryder from NCOM Christian Unity. A lot of accurate updates were shared to combat the disinformation advanced by the Media and Law Enforcement, and the program to raise funds to assist Waco Victims and their families was outlined. Go to www.onabike.com and contact NCOM Christian Unity for more information. NCOM Christian Unity Texas will be getting a Special Award for their hard work at this year’s NCOM Convention in Atlantic City, and Christian Unity Liaison to the NCOM Board Louie Nobs is receiving the 2016 Ron Roloff Lifetime Achievement Award for his considerable efforts on behalf of Bikers everywhere over a lot of years. Also featured at the Conference was “Gimme Jimmy” talking about the importance of the U.S. Defenders Program in the light of the Waco shootings; and “Double-D” and “Twitch” from the Washington Confederation of Clubs, who spoke on “Anti-Profiling Laws and How they Affect your State”. This was an important topic, since several COCs are very interested in getting this type of legislation passed in their states. The Conference continued with the Regional Meeting, where Motorcycling Rights representatives spoke of Legislative and February 2016
Legal Issues in their respective areas; and the Confederation of Clubs Regional Meeting, where COC Officers and representatives in attendance spoke of legal and lifestyle challenges and accomplishments. The NCOM Regional Conference concluded with the Christian Unity Seminar and Meeting for spiritual riding groups, and following the Spiritual Service and Blessing of the Bikes on Sunday Morning, riders went their separate ways refreshed, informed and resolved to vigorously continue the defense of Biker Liberty into the New Year.” MOTORCYCLE THEFT STATISTICS The National Insurance Crime Bureau has released its latest bike theft report, and while much of their annual report is predictable, such as most thefts occur in the summer, some statistics reveal some interesting nuggets of information: Nationally, the NICB’s “2014 United States Theft and Recovery report for 2014 and 2015” is better than in 2013. There were 42,856 motorcycle thefts recorded in 2014 (17,757, or 41% of motorcycles were recovered) which is a 6% decrease from the year prior. Considering motorcycle sales have increased 4% from 2013 (465,783) to 2014 (483,526), this is good news. The number of thefts decreased is a sign of steady decline in motorcycle thefts since 2011, with 8% fewer thefts in 2014 compared to three years prior. The top three states for motorcycle theft last year were California (6,355), Florida (3,981), and Texas (3,274). The state with the fewest thefts was Wyoming, with a total of 23 last year. There are 16 states that saw an increase in the number of motorcycle thefts in 2014 compared to 2013, with DC having the highest increase (54%). There are 35 states that saw a decrease in the number of motorcycle thefts in 2014 compared to 2013, with Wyoming having the highest decrease (-43%).
