Happy Birthday America and welcome Summer! July brings lots of events, Independence Day, and that first day of miserable heat and humidity will be here before you know it. That typical black leather motorcycle gear will get old really fast when you’re dripping with sweat. Don’t get caught off guard. You can check with many of our advertisers and see what you need to stay cool, dry, and riding. You can find everything from Vented Helmets, to Mesh and Vented Jackets, Pants and Gloves, and even Cooling Vests. It may sound counter-intuitive, but in the summer, riders really need to cover up, it keeps you better hydrated. Don’t let summer keep you indoors while the roads are dry and the sun is out. Be prepared with the right gear and keep those wheels rolling! Shop our advertisers Riding Gear and Accessories for the warming weather. We have so much fun when riding in a group, but it can be dangerous at the same time. We had a little scare a couple of weeks ago in a group ride when a couple went down on their bike. The passenger was okay but the driver was pretty banged up but will heal from his injuries. The fun and camaraderie of group riding is, for many, one of the top draws of having a motorcycle. However, it comes with a slew of risks all its own, covering too much road, mixing riders of various skill levels, and general chaos. Clearly, some rules are needed to help limit the unpredictability of what can be a fun and stress-relieving experience. Please remember, you have an obligation to bring good personal motorcycling skills to the group you’re riding with and that YOU have the ultimate responsibility for YOUR safety, and always ride within your capabilities and that of your machine to help ensure that we all return home safely. We ran a Group Riding article in the May issue with some helpful tips and guidelines that you can refer back to and you can find lots of tips online too. Follow these tips to help get you to your destination safely. Be sure and check out the Thunder Roads® Word Search on page 37 of this issue for a chance to win some cool Thunder Roads® Tennessee prizes, like bottle and can koozies, shot glasses, patches, and more! Just mail your completed puzzle to us each month and we will draw one winner each month from all the correctly completed puzzles. Good luck! We hope to see you at some events this month! We will be set up at the AMA Pro Hillclimb on July 15th at the Buffalo Valley Dragway and we’d love to see you there, please stop by our trailer and say hello! On this Fourth of July holiday we remember those who fought for our independence, honor our past and present heroic military members, and wish you and your loved ones a safe and happy holiday! TENNESSEE BIKER MEDICAL CLINIC 16TH ANNUAL POKER RUN By: Rebel Ron If you have ever enjoyed the ride that Pastor Ron and the Covenant Confirmers lay out every year through the farmland of northern Tennessee into the beautiful state of Kentucky you would have loved the ride this year. We could not have had a better day to ride. Blue skies, back roads, lots of sun with not a single drop of rain. This was the 5th ride I have attended and the very first one that we did not get a little bit of rain. If you are not familiar with this Biker Clinic and the Biker Church affiliated with it you should look into the good work they do. Go to www.covenantconfirmers.org to learn more or give Pastor Ron a call at 615-384-9010. The church podium has handlebars!!!! That’s all you need to know right there. :) Miss Amy and I had several riding buddies join us in Franklin to cruise up to Springfield for this worthy cause and fun ride. They were lining the bikes up when we arrived and I stopped counting them at 80 because there were too many old friends to talk to. KSU at noon and first stop was at a US Flag Rally in Elkton, KY town square before moving on to Appleton Harley-Davidson in Clarksville, then on to the cool Hwy 12 Motorsports. The sunny scenic ride ended at the Outlaws MC clubhouse for their 45th anniversary party to celebrate their arrival in Nashville. Founding member Tommy is the only original member now and who can still be seen around the clubhouse. He is always an interesting man to chat with. Pastor Ron tells me Josephine Clark won the 50/50 contest, Sidekick won the poker hand with a full house, and our beloved TRM owner Scott High won for the worse poker hand. Pastor Ron would like to thank all who made the ride, those who helped with the event, and his sponsors, Hwy 12 Motorsports, Panhead Phil’s Music City Motorcycles, and Appleton Harley-Davidson. It was a great day to ride and for a great cause too. Join us next year, you’ll be glad you did. Y’all ride safe & often!!!! I’ll see ya down the road.

“BIRDS OF A FEATHER” Isa. 31:5 “As birds flying, so will the Lord of host defend Jerusalem; defending also He will deliver it; and passing over He will preserve it.” One thing the modern day church could learn from the bird kingdom is how they stick together no matter what. They even develop partners for life. It is important for the church to learn team work and unity. Anything alive has a “Pulse”. The pulse creates a “Rhythm”, the rhythm creates “Energy”, and the energy produces “Creativity”. Lone Rangers quickly lose momentum and never reach their full potential without teamwork. All movie stars have a supporting staff, quarterbacks have an offensive line, singers have a band, and Generals have an army. You can be talented, educated, anointed, and called by God but even God knew you would need some help. Gen. 2:18 “And the Lord God said, it is not good that man should be alone: I will make him a helpmeet for him.” Great success is always based on who you associate with and not on yourself. You can accomplish good success by yourself but never great success. Heb. 10:25 is one of the most widely abused scriptures in the Bible. Most ministers use it from a legalistic viewpoint to make people come to church. But in reality, it is more of a warning than anything. “Not forsaking (Greek: to emotionally abandon) the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as you see the day approaching.” You can be physically present but emotionally absent, “as a manner of some.” Do you “exhort one another” or backbite and gossip? “And so much the more” we should be exhorting one another more now than ever because “as we see the day approaching.” As we see all the anger and violence of today, we need each other because the 2nd coming of Christ quickly approaches. Because “we see the day approaching,” we should be “assembling ourselves together, so much the more.” We seem to be doing less; at one time the church was the main part of everyday life, but now it’s been put on

July 2017

the back burner for most people. Some of us were more faithful to the nightclubs and drug dealers than we are now to God’s house. We would go anywhere for the drugs, through any bad weather, anytime, anywhere, any cost, shouldn’t we at least give God the same due diligence? Acts 2:1 “when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.” We can “All be in one place,” but are we “All in one accord?” If we are not all in one accord, then we don’t share the same pulse, we are out of rhythm, and we produce no energy. Matt. 18:19 “…if any two of you shall agree on earth as touching, anything they shall ask, it shall be done for them.” We must come together in agreement. Amos 3:3 “Can two walk together, except they be agreed”? An army that marches together must march with the same cadence, same pulse, same rhythm. All Christians are headed to the same place but we are not all in agreement, we don’t share the same pulse, the same rhythm, or the same energy. Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

Bullet Points

PRINCIPLES OF A SELF-DEFENSE CLAIM – REASONABLENESS Hello fellow bikers. As I write this month’s column, the first day of summer is just around the corner. I hope you, like me, have been getting plenty of riding in since last month. This month’s Bullet Points column is the last in the five-part series, Principles of a Self-Defense Claim and deals with Reasonableness. In review, the five critical components to a successful self-defense claim are: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Innocence Imminence Proportionality Avoidance Reasonableness

If you find yourself in the unfortunate position where you have to defend yourself with lethal force, your continued freedom will depend on if the police and courts believe all five of these components were properly met. If there is any doubt in their minds that each one was met, your legal team will have to convince a jury that you did in fact meet them. Reasonableness of your actions is judged both objectively and subjectively. In the event that the police turn your case over to the prosecuting attorney, objective reasonableness will primarily be determined by interviews with witnesses, physical evidence – and if the case goes to court – testimony by expert witnesses. Subjective reasonableness is primarily going to be determined by your actions and any statements you make (Hint: a subject of an upcoming article). Let’s examine both of these. Objective Objective reasonableness is an imaginary litmus test. Essentially, it implores someone to consider if a reasonable person would make the same decisions and take the same actions you did if in exactly the same situation. This imaginary person is a law-abiding citizen, goes to the intersection to cross the street, does not have anger issues, does not do drugs and never drinks to excess. He/she would be cautious by nature. Average in every way, he/she would not have above average intelligence or super human strength. When considering objective reasonableness, the police and district attorney may well transfer your physical characteristics to the imaginary person. If you are old, frail, small or handicapped you would likely fear for your life more quickly than a healthy man in his mid-20s. As such, a lower threshold would have to be exceeded before you began to become fearful and the fight-or-flight instinct kicked in – when you believed the threat was imminent. In a self-defense case, the court may also allow Mr. Reasonable to have specialized knowledge which you have. A good example would be if you knew the person was extremely violent, unstable and had a reputation

July 2017

as a vicious fighter. If you were to find yourself in a position where he was coming quickly at you with clenched fists and in an obvious rage, you may believe the threat to be imminent more quickly than if you did not have this specialized knowledge. Having this knowledge transferred to Mr. Reasonable is only fair because a reasonable person with such knowledge would be more likely to react quickly. Other specialized knowledge, such as your previous understanding of the Tueller Drill (for more information see the Bullet Points article on Imminence) can be passed to Mr. Reasonable – and he, like you – will know that a knife wielding man is an imminent threat at 21 feet, which may not seem reasonable to everyone. But if you were to find yourself in court, you will most likely need to prove that you knew this before you used the force. Owning a book which cites the Tueller Drill, with a receipt, would be proof. Attending a self-defense class prior to the incident which provided information on the Tueller Drill may well suffice as proof. If Mr. Reasonable would have taken the same actions you did, you have passed the litmus test for objective reasonableness. But that does not mean you are out of the “proverbial woods” yet. Subjective Reasonableness Subjective reasonableness takes into consideration all of the things you did and said. Just because Mr. Reasonable would have acted like you did, if you truly did not believe you were innocent, there was not an imminent threat or your actions were not proportional, you are at risk of not passing the subjective reasonableness test. You may be wondering, “How would the police or prosecutor know I did not believe this if I did not tell them?” This is where your statement to the police can come in. If you were to say, “I was not afraid for my life,” or “I could have taken him with my fists,” you are in jeopardy of losing your self-defense case because there was not imminence and your actions were not proportional. Other things which can cause police and prosecutors to fail your selfdefense claim due to subjective reasonableness would be running from the scene, hiding from police or tampering with evidence. These actions will immediately cause them to believe you were not the innocent party. In closing, remember that you must be able to prove the following to claim self-defense: you are INNOCENT, you believed there was an IMMINENT threat of death or serious injury, your use of force was PROPORTIONAL, there was no reasonable avenue of AVOIDANCE and a REASONABLE person would have taken the same actions. Until next month, keep the shiny side up! Molon Labe, Mike Noirot Note: I am not a lawyer and nothing in this column represents legal advice. My article is based on common sense and many years of studying self-defense.

RIDER SAFETY

Be Visible A few weeks ago, I was taking my motorcycle to be serviced. My parents were following me to the dealership to give me a ride after I dropped off my bike. Upon getting in the car, my mom asked me in her concerned mom voice: “Why are you driving near the middle line, shouldn’t you be in the middle of the lane?” I began to explain to my mom that the general consensus for a person driving a vehicle that pulls out in front of a motorcyclist is something like “Officer, I just didn’t see him.” And, as motorcyclists, it’s our job to present ourselves in such a way to see and be seen. We need to intentionally put effort into being visible to motorists. There are several things we can do to be more visible. One of which is lane positioning. Typically, we divide our lane into thirds, with lane position 1 (LP1) being the leftmost position of the lane and our start position. Lane position 2 (LP2) is the center part of the lane and lane position 3 (LP3) is the rightmost position of the lane. Based on the road conditions and hazards you may encounter, you have the opportunity to change your lane position so motorists are given a better opportunity to see you. The reason for riding in a certain lane position can vary; let’s look at some examples: Lane Position 1 (LP1)  A good position to see and be seen  Increases your line of site down the road  Avoids the dark strip of oil in the middle of the lane  Offers more visibility at intersections that may have limited visibility to the right  Avoid car doors opening from parked cars

Lane Position 2 (LP2)

Lane Position 3 (LP3)

 Allows more  Avoids the dark space if strip of oil in there are the middle of hazards on the lane both sides of the lane  Offers more visibility at  When intersections cresting a that may have hill limited visibility to the left  Provides space on  Avoids wind both sides blasts from for curves oncoming trucks

As you leave the safety of your garage and venture out on to the road, make the extra effort to be visible. Remember that safe riding starts with you! (Special thanks to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation for content and images. And, to motorbikerider.com for the photo.) Donna, along with being an avid riding enthusiast, is a MSF motorcycle safety coach for the state of Tennessee and a Harley-Davidson Riding Academy Coach. She is a member of the Motor Maids, H.O.G. and Ladies of Harley.

• Here are a few additional guidelines to consider: • Use your signal lights to indicate to other drivers your intentions and then make sure the signal light is off after changing lanes • On freeways with two lanes, keep right except to pass • On freeways with more than two lanes, avoid the right lane to reduce any conflicts that may occur at the entry ramps • Maintain a space cushion around you • Look ahead for possible hazards and be aware of potential escape paths Being visible to motorists is an important part of being a safe rider. Other ways to be visible when riding includes wearing bright clothing with reflective material and consider a bright color helmet instead of a dark one. Use your turn signals and make sure your head light is always on and flash your brake light before stopping or when waiting at a stop to alert a motorist approaching you from behind. July 2017

MT. ST. HELENS NATIONAL VOLCANIC MONUMENT

The monument which consists of 172 square miles was established by President Ronald Reagan in 1982. It includes the mountain itself, the most active volcano in the Cascade Mountains and one of the “Ring of Fire” series of volcanos that rim the Pacific Ocean. Although there had been minor volcanic activity throughout history, the most economically destructive eruption in American history occurred on May 18, 1980. On that date, a 5.1 earthquake loosened the built-up pressure with devastating results. 57 people were killed, as were 7,000 elk, deer, and bear, 12 million salmon and all of the birds and small non-burrowing animals, on the mountain. The blast reduced the peak from 9,677 feet to 8,363 feet, while shooting ash 15 miles high, and creating the largest debris field in recorded history. As a result, day was turned to night for 125 miles to the northeast. A friend brought us an ash sample that covered her Portland OR home, 50 miles away! The debris field destroyed 250 homes, 185 miles of highway, and 15 miles of railroad. In addition, the lush forests on the northern slope turned into a barren plain of ash and blown down trees. The damage is still prominent today, 37 years later. Steam and minor lava flows continue today. On the day we were there, the calm winds allowed the smoke to nearly obscure the mountain. In Amboy WA, this park gives insight into the power of volcanos. The western U.S. is riddled with these features. The largest and most dangerous lava pool underlies Yellowstone. When it erupts, it will make Mt. St. Helens seem like a pop gun. Although the destruction dominates the scenery, Mt. St. Helens is still a

14

place of beautiful views. The slow regrowth of vegetation and the return of animals shows the resilience of nature. Be sure to check it out while in the area, it’s a real eye opener! I am very pleased to hear, from some of our readers, that you save these articles, for future adventures. I hope that they will add interesting stops to your future rides. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! SMOKY MOUNTAIN THUNDER XVII

By Scott High Once again thousands of bikes lined up in Sevierville TN on the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend to pay tribute to the memory of our fallen military and raise awareness to the reason for Memorial Day. The weather forecast looked bad with an 80-100% chance of rain. As the weekend got closer the forecast improved a little but they were still calling for a 60% chance of rain. Even with the gloomy forecast, about 2,000 bikes made the 65 mile escorted ride from Sevierville to Veterans overlook on Clinch Mountain in Grainger County TN. This year they paid tribute to women that have paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. After what has become a tradition at SMT, an appearance by one of the

American Bald Eagles (Majesty this year) from the American Eagle Foundation, and moving patriotic songs by both T.C. Barnette and Kaleb Wright, the keynote address was given by the commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Veterans Affairs, Colonel Many-Bears Grinder. Commissioner Grinder is also a Gold Star Family member after the loss of her daughter-in-law, Chief Warrant Officer 2, Billie Jean Grinder. CW2 Grinder and Capt. Marcus Ray Alford died Feb. 21 in Qayyarah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when their OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopter had a hard landing. She is the first female casualty of the Tennessee Army National Guard. A wreath was laid in her honor by the Sevierville PD with CW2 Grinder’s Mother and Step Father, Roxanne and Billy Davenport. The organizers, Ron and Sandy Giddis work tirelessly throughout the year to put the event on and have grown it into the largest memorial of its kind in the state. It has grown so much over the years, both in attendance and the supporters who line the streets, highways and water ways to wave, yell, and honk their air horns in remembrance of our Fallen. 32ND ANNUAL NCOM CONVENTION

AND SILVER SPOKE AWARDS BANQUET by Scott High photos Bill Bisch

The National Coalition of Motorcyclist (NCOM) is a coalition of motorcycle rights groups, clubs, and associations, working together for the greater good of the biker community. It’s made up of over 2,000 member organizations from all over the United States and millions of riders. The National Council is comprised of one member from each participating organization and the board of advisors is made up of motorcycle rights leaders from each of the 11 regions. They have a legislative task force made up of State Representatives, advocates, and United States Senators. Funding for NCOM doesn’t come from its member organizations or members, 100% of the organizations funding comes from the Aid to Injured Motorcyclist (A.I.M.) program. NCOM lobbies legislative bodies and writes bills at the local, state, and national level on behalf of all bikers, and offers a powerful unified voice to stand up for the rights of bikers everywhere. Every year before their national convention they take nominations from all over the country within the motorcycle community for the coveted “NCOM Silver Spoke Awards.” The NCOM Board of Directors carefully considers each nomination then chooses a recipient from each category such as Government, Legal, Entertainment, Special Recognition, Industry, and Media. Silver Spokes are given in each field to recipients for “Outstanding Contributions to Improve the Image of Motorcycling”. Some past Silver Spoke winners include Willie G. Davidson, Malcolm Forbes, Peter Fonda, Lorenzo Lamas and Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell. Sometime around the first of March we received the news that Thunder Roads Tennessee had been nominated for, and would receive the 2017 Silver Spoke Award for Media! We were shocked to say the least, the NCOM Silver Spoke is a very prestigious and highly sought after July 2017

award in the motorcycle community and we had no idea we had even been nominated. Denise and I were flown to Reno Nevada for the yearly convention and spent Mother’s Day weekend as guest of NCOM. This year’s Silver Spoke Award recipients included Senator Joni Ernst for Government, Christopher Slater of A.I.M. for Legal, and Stephen “Bowtie” Stubbs of NCOM gave the Keynote speech and received Special Recognition. Boar, NCOM Liaison to the Confederation of Clubs, received the Lifetime Achievement award, and Frank Fritz of American Pickers won the Silver Spoke Award for Entertainment. Most don’t know it but Frank helped start the ABATE Chapter in his hometown of Davenport Iowa and was its President for 9 years. Denise and I were honored and humbled for Thunder Roads Tennessee to receive the prestigious NCOM Silver Spoke Award for Media. We would like to thank NCOM for this very special recognition. It is an honor to be recognized for what you do, it’s not why you do it, and you may not seek it, but it makes us so proud that what we are doing is being recognized. Producing and distributing a magazine every month is a lot of hard work, and it’s definitely a labor of love but we couldn’t do it alone. We want to thank our advertisers who keep this free magazine coming to you every month. A huge thank you to all of our contributors, photographers, and our Graphic Design Artist (Team Thunder) who are also our friends, for helping us produce the content you read every month, but mostly we want to thank YOU, our loyal readers. This magazine is for you, and if you didn’t pick it up every month, read it, and visit the events and advertisers in it, none of it would be possible. This year we have been named Publishers of the Year within the 18 magazine strong Thunder Roads Network and within a few months we were awarded the NCOM Silver Spoke award, and all of us at Thunder Roads Tennessee are so proud, humbled, and blessed to have our hard work recognized. THANK YOU from YOUR Award Winning Team at Thunder Roads Magazine of Tennessee!

You might want to make a tad more of the marinade to brush on chicken regardless of which way you prepare. We had these grilled on an outside grill and they were clucking fabulous!

Take off and drain on paper towels; cap side up. In a medium glass bowl mix the crabmeat with thinly chopped scallions and salt & pepper. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Fill all your shrooms’ heaping with the crabmeat mixture. Place on a cookie sheet lined with foil or a silt pad. Pop in the oven for 15 minutes; just long enough for mushroom & crabmeat to get nice and hot. Pull out and sprinkle shredded Swiss cheese all over the top and pop back in over until melted. OoLaLa! BIKE OF THE MONTH

Jeff Gill Photography

1999 HARLEY-DAVIDSON FATBOY

Congratulations to Robert Miller on winning our monthly Bike Contest on Facebook! I have been blessed by riding motorcycles all my life. I love it more than any other hobby. Hard to beat the feeling of the wind in your hair and the bars in your hands as you rumble down the road! I have over a 100 thousand miles on previous bikes. My wife and I have been riding together since 1999. She bought her 02 Deuce and we have been on many great trips together. Motorcycles are my passion, I have loved them from the first time I rode a friends mini bike when I was nine. I bought this bike with no intentions of any customizing. Thanks to a friend with a box full of parts from a trade in bike a super deal, the chrome bug took over and I was hooked. I bought this Bike brand new in 1999. It has 40k on speedo. The photo with the saddle bags is current, the bike has been through several changes from the stock black and cast parts. The engine is an original Evolution 80, it has Patriot Defender 2 into1 exhaust, braided cables and lines, big handle bars, Arlen Ness chrome covers everywhere! It has an Andrews EV27 cam and screaming eagle carb with Le Pera seat. This bike is wrapped in chrome with many birthday and Christmas presents. I also have a windshield, luggage rack and backrest. I like the solo look the best! The bike has won several trophies from bike shows in the Tennessee area. What I like best about the bike is most who see it think it’s new, not an 18 year old bike. Now the bad news!!! On 5/26/2017, a good friend of mine ran into the back of me and there was lots of damage to both bikes, God was watching over us and neither was hurt too badly. Waiting to hear from insurance to see if they will rebuild my bike or if I will do it. This bike feels like part of me and will be restored back to its Glory. I may someday have another bike, but this one will never leave my garage. I may not get to ride as much as I like, but I know my bike is always ready and willing to hit some old country roads. I hope when I retire to ride out West and see that side of the U.S! Robert Miller

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)

BIKER ANTI-PROFILING MEASURES UNDER CONSIDERATION IN CONGRESS H.Res.318/S.Res.154: “Promoting awareness of motorcycle profiling and encouraging collaboration and communication with the motorcycle community and law enforcement officials to prevent instances of profiling,” was referred to the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security, and Investigations on June 2, 2017. Concerned motorcyclists are encouraged to contact their federal lawmakers in the U.S. Senate & House of Representatives to co-sponsor and support these bills. Under the companion measures in the Senate and House, “motorcycle profiling” means “the illegal use of the fact that a person rides a motorcycle or wears motorcycle related apparel as a factor in deciding to stop and question, take enforcement action, arrest, or search a person or vehicle with or without legal basis under the Constitution of the United States. FEDERAL LEGISLATION COULD PROLIFERATE E15 GAS Despite objections that the proliferation of E15 gasoline into the U.S. marketplace will negatively impact every American who owns a car, lawnmower or boat, two new federal bills have been introduced to expand availability of the higher concentrate ethanol fuel. Senator Deb Fischer (R-NE) and U.S. Representative Adrian Smith (R-NE) introduced the “Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act” (S.517 & H.R.1311) amending the Clean Air Act to allow the sale of E15 (15% blend ethanol gas) during summer months (June 1 - September 15). Motorcycle and ATV owners risk damaging their machines by even inadvertently putting E15 in their tanks, as the higher blends of ethanol can cause engine and fuel system damage, void manufacturers’ warranties and violate federal law. Motorcyclists should also be concerned about the availability of compatible fuel supplies if gas stations primarily provide E15 gasoline that’s EPA-approved for the majority of their driving customers -- but no on- or off-road motorcycles or ATVs appear on the EPA’s list of vehicles approved to use E15. ZERO MOTORCYCLES NEW “DON’T WAIT FOR WASHINGTON” E-BIKE PROGRAM The recently launched program was created to advocate for electric motorcycles and assure buyers they will get the Electric Motorcycle Federal Tax Credit. “Don’t Wait For Washington” assures “up to $1,869 on a Zero motorcycle if the government fails to reinstate the Electric Motorcycle Tax Credit.” The initiative serves the dual purposes of driving the conversation on electric motorcycles forward while legislation languishes in Washington, and of motivating would-be electric motorcycle riders to join the e-movement. Should the federal government fail to reinstate the tax credit by 26

the end of the year, then Zero will step up and send 10% cash back to buyers, matching the expired tax credit for new, eligible 2017 Zero motorcycles. MAINSTREAM MEDIA PROMOTES RIDERSHIP According to the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC), a not-forprofit national trade association, their 2014 rider survey reports that “56% of Generation Y riders use their motorcycles as a primary means of transportation,” and that factoid recently appeared in a Ride To Work Day graphic on the front page of the June 19 edition of USA Today’s Life section. “This major mainstream media placement is especially significant to the MIC as the industry association is actively promoting motorcycles as transportation and seeking new generations of riders,” says the MIC communications department, which has previously worked on Ride to Work Day segments with “Good Morning America,” ABC’s national morning news show, and with “The KTLA Morning News,” the biggest morning news program in Southern California. The MIC exists to “preserve, protect and promote motorcycling through government relations, communications and media relations, statistics and research, aftermarket programs, AIMExpo, development of data communications standards, and activities surrounding technical and regulatory issues.” LOUISIANA TO TEACH NEW LICENSEES HOW TO INTERACT WITH POLICE Louisiana Governor Bel Edwards has signed into law a requirement that driver education classes must include a segment on interacting with police in their course curriculum. Introduced by Senators Ryan Gatti (R-Bossier), Wesley Bishop (D-New Orleans) and Gary Smith Jr. (D-Norco) on March 20, 2017, SB17 “Provides for driver education to include instruction on appropriate driver conduct when stopped by a law enforcement officer.” The bipartisan measure was signed by the governor on June 16 as Act No. 286 with an effective date of January 1, 2018. HANDLEBAR HEIGHT LAW MODIFIED IN MARYLAND Maryland has become the most recent state to modify or repeal their antiquated and discriminatory handlebar height law, which many states enacted in the sixties to provide a law enforcement tool for pulling over bikers on their choppers. Governor Larry Hogan approved Senate Bill 668 on May 25, 2017; “Increasing, from 15 inches to 20 inches, the maximum height that the handlebars of a motorcycle may be above a specified part of the motorcycle seat in order for a person to lawfully operate the motorcycle.” SB668 was introduced February 3, 2017 by lead sponsor Senator H. Wayne Norman, Jr. (R-D35) and becomes effective October 1, 2017, and ABATE of Maryland advises to “Remember that the height is measured from the seat to the highest point on the handlebars, not from the bottom of the handlebar to the grips or highest point.”

NEW HAMPSHIRE OKAYS COLORED HEADLAMPS FOR MOTORCYCLES, SAME AS CARS New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu signed HB458 into law on June 8, 2017, an Act relative to motorcycle headlamps. Sponsored by Rep. James Spillane (R-Deerfield), “This bill allows headlamp colors approved by the director of the division of motor vehicles for automobiles to be considered approved for motorcycle headlamps,” with an effective date 60 days after its passage (August 7, 2017). OREGON ENACTS LAWS EFFECTING TRIKES & AUTOCYCLES In dealing with the increased popularity of three-wheeled vehicles, Oregon lawmakers have passed two new laws to make it easier for riders to get in the saddle. House Bill 3125 was signed into law by Governor Kate Brown on June 14, 2017 to define an “autocycle” and provides that a person may operate one without a motorcycle endorsement. The Act takes effect immediately under the Emergency clause. Sponsored by the Committee on Transportation Policy, under HB3125 “autocycle” means a motorcycle that: (1) Is manufactured to travel on three wheels; (2) Has a steering wheel for steering control; and (3) Has nonstraddle seating, and (4) is equipped with a manufacturer-installed three-point safety belt or safety harness. Senate Bill 36 “Provides that Department of Transportation may waive skills test for person seeking motorcycle endorsement to operate three-wheeled motorcycle [trike],” and was also signed by the governor on June 14. LICENSE PLATE MOUNTING OPTIONS FOR SOUTH DAKOTA RIDERS Effective July 1, 2017, motorcycle owners in South Dakota will be allowed to mount license plates to their motorcycle “in any visible manner other than upside down.” Governor Dennis Daugaard signed Senate Bill 79 into law on March 9, after overwhelmingly passing through both chambers of the state legislature. FAIR WARNING: MOST DRIVERS KNOW THEY’RE BAD DRIVERS Millions of drivers admit that they don’t always make thorough mirrors checks when pulling away, according a driver survey, with 25% admitting they don’t look in their mirrors when pulling out into traffic. Of 2,025 drivers polled, 15% admitted not always looking at road signs, 68% admit rarely driving with both hands on the wheel, and over half (52%) believed bad habits such as these would ensure they failed the driving test if they had to do it again. Too many people are injured on the roads due to poor judgment and a lack of road skills says David Carter, spokesman for Accident Advice Helpline in the U.K., which conducted the research, adding: “It is worrying that more people don’t feel confident in their own skills on the road and feel that they’ve developed bad habits which would cause them to not pass their driving test.” GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN This year has been tragic for our bikers rights family, suffering the loss of two past NCOM Board of Directors; Butch Harbaugh (NCOM Legislative Task Force) and Dennis “Big D” Watson (NCOM Region IX), both recipients of the Ron Roloff Lifetime Achievement Award (2003 & 2006) in whose memory the recent National Coalition of Motorcyclists’ NCOM Convention in Reno was dedicated, and now we regretfully report the passing of longtime biker advocate and Easyriders magazine writer “Twiggy” Blakeboro (73, of Lompoc, CA) who died June 11, 2017. Twiggy was much beloved by his peers and was a past recipient of the NCOM Silver Spoke Award - Media (1997). “Nuff said.” R.I.P. Brothers, Ride In Peace. As a new, young MD doing his residency in OBGYN I was quite embarrassed when performing female pelvic exams. To cover my embarrassment I had unconsciously formed a habit of whistling softly. A very attractive young lady in her early 30’s whom I was performing this exam on suddenly burst out laughing and further embarrassing me. I looked up from my work and sheepishly said...’I’m sorry. Was I tickling you?’ She replied with tears running down her cheeks from laughing so hard ... ‘No doctor but the song you were whistling was... I wish I was an Oscar Meyer Wiener.’ _____________________________________________________ Grandpa and Little Johnny are sitting on a bench in the park. Johnny asked, “Grandpa are you going to take that new Vǐagra?” Grandpa looks at him and says, “No Johnny, I will not.” “But Grandpa, why?” asks little Johnny. Grandpa replies, “Because there is no sense in putting lead in your pencil if you have no one to write to.” _____________________________________________________ A New York attorney representing a wealthy art collector called and spoke to his client, “Saul, I have some good news and some bad news.” I met with your wife today, and she informed me that she invested $5,000 in two pictures that she thinks will bring a minimum of $15-20 million and I think she could be right.” Saul replied enthusiastically, “Well done! My wife is a brilliant businesswoman! You’ve just made my day. Now I know I can handle the bad news. What is it?” The lawyer replied, “The pictures are of you with your Personal Assistant. _____________________________________________________ I was standing at the bar at the VFW one night minding my own business. This very large, totally sloppy drunk with smeared lipstick and mascara running down her face chick came up behind me, grabbed my butt and said, “You’re kinda cute. You got a phone number?” I said, “Yeah, you got a pen?” She said, “Yeah, I got a pen”. I said, “You better get back in it before the farmer misses you.” Cost me 6 stitches..but, When you’re seventy- five....who cares? _____________________________________________________ I went to the drug store and told the clerk “Give me 3 packets of condoms, please.” Lady Clerk: “Do you need a paper bag with that, sir?” I said “Nah... She’s rough but I can actually look at her.” She smacked me right in the face, but... When you’re seventy- five....who cares? 28

I went to my VFW again last night and saw a BIG woman dancing on a table. I said, “Good legs.” The girl giggled and said, “Do you really think so?” I said, “Definitely! Most tables would have collapsed by now.” Cost me 6 more stitches, But, when you’re seventy-five .....who cares? _____________________________________________________ I was telling a woman in the Club about my ability to guess what day a woman was born just by feeling her breasts. “Really” she said, “Go on then... try.” After about thirty seconds of fondling she began to lose patience and said, “Come on, what day was I born?” I said, “Yesterday.” Cost me a kick in the groin, but... When you’re seventy-five ......who cares? _____________________________________________________ A guy is walking down the street and sees Little Johnny smoking a cigarette. He says, “Kid, you’re too young to smoke.” Johnny looks up but doesn’t say anything. The man asks, “Son, how old are you?” Little Johnny says, “Eleven.” Stunned, the man says, “Seven!? When did you start smoking?” Johnny replies, “Right after the first time I had sex.” “Right after the first time you had sex!? the man exclaims. When was that?” Little Johnny ponders, “Gotta’ say I honestly don’t remember….I was majorly drunk”. _____________________________________________________ A man goes into a restaurant where all the waitresses are gorgeous. A particularly voluptuous waitress wearing a very short skirt comes to his table and asks, “What would you like, sir?” He looks at the menu, scans her beautiful frame top to bottom, and then answers, “A quickie.” The waitress turns and walks away in disgust. After she regains her composure she returns and asks again, “What would you like, sir?” Again the man thoroughly checks her out and again answers, “A quickie, please.” This time her anger takes over, she reaches over and slaps him across the face with a resounding SMACK! and storms away. A man sitting at the next table then leans over and whispers, “Um, I think it’s pronounced ‘quiche.’”

July 2017

by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley

Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: As we enter the month of Independence Day I am reminded of how in the 1700’s the majority of American colonists were aligned with the King of England. The King was all about controlling the colonies so his kingdom could reap the benefit of high taxation, goods and agricultural products. The King of England was oppressive and viewed the colonists as a money crop to be harvested. Many of the colonists viewed domination as security and were afraid to act for freedom. Thank goodness there were colonists born of pioneering in the new land with the experience of hacking out an existence in the wilderness. Their experience bestowed courage, self-reliance and a sense of ownership in people who basically had nothing when they came to North America. They came to this country for religious freedom and to make a new life. They made something for themselves and the King wanted a big part of it. The minority rebelled against the King, declared independence and fought a war to make the colonies independent from England. During the revolutionary war, many colonists remained loyal to the King. Thank goodness there wasn’t a bleeding-heart congress then to insure the loyalists didn’t get their feeling hurt. American’s were born of the spirit that they have a right to pursue happiness, wealth and freedom. The spirit is based in self-reliance, hard work, creativity and the protections of the United States Constitution. Even today we still have a large segment of our population that seeks domination, taxation and control by government. This past election we had open alignment of some presidential candidates with communism and socialism. These are throwbacks to ideologies that have never been successful in the history of man. That being true, there are still many who align with socialism and communism and want to take away what others have worked hard to get. Our constitution is under siege as are our American values. There is an evil movement of leftists that have taken over most of the media. They bombard us daily with loony leftist messages and charges that those who have July 2017

made something of themselves did it unfairly and owe most of it to everyone else. They craft false images of those who have worked hard to better themselves as people who cheated, lied and stole their prosperity. They work overtime to sell the ideal society as one where everyone is given the necessities of life and those in power are idolized as caretakers for the helpless. They subdue individualism, self-direction and independent thought through political correctness. They ignore our laws, ethical action and responsible measures of security. There was a day when these actions were known as subversion. If you want to stand for a better America and support those who have sacrificed much for our nation, come join me on July 23rd for a motorcycle ride and concert to benefit “The Ride Home.” The Ride Home is America’s premier event to honor former Prisoners of War and families whose service member is still missing in action and is held the third Friday of September on POW/MIA Remembrance Day. The benefit ride starts at Cracker Barrel, 1005 Village Green Crossing, Gallatin, TN 37066. Registration at 10am, kickstands up at 11am. The donation for the ride and concert is $20, $5 for a passenger. The concert is by Wing and a Prayer Band at Triple Creek Park, Gallatin, TN 37066. If you only want to attend the concert it’s $10 and kids under 12 are free. Ride Home T-shirts and refreshments are available. I recommend bringing a lawn chair or blanket for the concert. The Ride Home takes place in the Warner Robbins area and at Andersonville in Georgia. You can learn more at www.theridehome.com. All money raised will sponsor former POWs and families of the missing to cover the cost of their lodging, meals and transportation at the event. There is a banquet, recognition ceremony at the National POW museum in Andersonville and an honors ceremony where each honored guest receives a special medallion and a certificate. None of the funds raised are used to support volunteers or other purposes. The public is invited. Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. Bulldog * My monthly column reflects my personal point of view and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Publishers of this magazine, but they, like me, acknowledge the sacrifices made for the privilege of Freedom of Speech, therefore, they gratefully let me rant. Thank you for reading my rants. Hope my opinions don’t offend anyone, but, we all should be grateful for the right to have free opinions.
