Well we are wrapping things up for this issue and getting ready to go to print. By the time you get your copy, we will have been to the Smoky Mountain Memorial Ride XVI in Sevierville and we will be at the Tennessee State HOG Rally in Memphis having a blast I’m sure! You can read all about these great events in the July issue and if you were at either of them, you might just see your pic. Also, it’s never too early to start making plans to be at the AMA Pro Hillclimb on July 30th! The Tennessee Thunder Run is in full swing with more ride stops coming in July! Make sure you check the list of winning numbers to see if you won a prize or two. A couple of people won a prize at multiple stops! How cool is that!? If you don’t have your ride card yet, what are you waiting for? It’s simple and you’ll have fun doing what you like to do best, RIDING, only with a bonus of having a chance to WIN prizes while doing it. If you know of a place that would be a cool ride stop for the Thunder Run, let us know and if we pick the location you suggested you’ll get a bonus check-in. You can email us at tennesseethunderrun@gmail.com We have been in need of a trailer for a long time and we finally got one… woohoo! We are in the process of having our logo put on it so we’ll be easy to spot at events from now on. It was so much work loading our tent, tables, t-shirts, etc. in the back of Scotts truck, setting it all up, then tearing it down and coming home and unloading it all again. Now we can just pull up, park, open the vendor window and we’re ready to go, what a relief! So, when you see our trailer set up somewhere, stop by and say “hi”, pick up a copy of the magazine and get a t-shirt or koozie if you like. You can also get a bonus check-in for the Tennessee Thunder Run if you show us your ride card at any events we set up at, so that’s another good reason to get your ride card at any of the Registration/Ride Stops on the list! As always, please support to our amazing advertisers that support us by shopping at their businesses when you’re in need of a product or service they provide.

“Stuck On Stupid” Matt.12: 16-17 “Lest there be any fornicator or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. For you know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected for he found no place of repentance though he sought it carefully with tears.” Esau & Jacob were born together but Esau came out first making him the “Firstborn.” There were two great advantages of being the Firstborn: #1. The Natural: You were entitled to most of the wealth, property, and positions of the father. #2. The Spiritual: You were entitled to “The Blessing.” The definition of the Greek word “Blessing” means “Empowered to prosper.” The blessing was much more important than all the natural wealth because when you had spent all the natural wealth, the blessing would empower you to prosper in everything in life, thus the scripture, “Blessed in the city, blessed in the field, blessed coming in and blessed going out, and everything you touch will prosper.” How could someone like Esau with so much promise, lose not just his birthright, but his blessing and his position in the Bible as well? We read a lot about Jacob, but only negative things about Esau. Esau should have been the Spiritual heir, the financial heir, and the historical heir. When we look at the Biblical account of Esau in Gen. 25: 29-34 he gave up his birthright for a bowel of beans because he was hungry. Jacob did not trick Esau, Esau was just “Stupid!” Esau made a permanent decision over a temporary situation. Many of us have made that same mistake, we traded 30 years for 30 minutes! Hunger, loneliness, depression, poverty will all pass. The only thing worse than a stupid decision is making the same stupid decision twice in a row! Later on in Gen.27:1-5 we read where Jacob did trick Esau out of his blessing. Esau, like some of us, didn’t learn this lesson the first time. Heb. 12:17 “…Esau was rejected from the blessing: he found no place of Repentance though he sought it with tears.” Esau’s problem is the same problem as the modern day Church, We have a misunderstanding of the word “Repentance.” We have been taught that repentance means to say “I’m June 2016
sorry,” The definition of the Greek word repentance “Is to change your mind.” Esau’s second problem was he sought repentance through tears which comes from “Emotions,” The modern day Church is too caught up on “Emotions.” Our sermons are based on emotions, our music is based on emotions, even our alter calls are based on emotions. That’s why Christians keep backsliding, addicts stay addicted, drunks keep drinking, depression keeps coming back and sex is destroying the Church. Emotions come from the flesh and Emotions can change like the wind. We must learn to make a “Decision” based on God’s Word. Truth can change the facts, but the facts can never change the Truth. A Decision is stronger than any Emotion. I believe that Emotions have turned the modern day church into more of entertainment than the Anointing. If you keep on making the same mistakes over & over, then you have not repented. If a pig and a sheep fall into a mud hole, the sheep will cry and find a way out, but the pig will lay in it. You might be it, but you don’t belong to it. If you fall into it, don’t waller in it. Stop being “Stuck on Stupid” and “Change your mind,” then you’ll see the Blessings of God on your life! Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

CARL - Are you looking for a guy who will love you unconditionally and who will always love to play? Well I may be your perfect match! I am super playful and could spend hours playing fetch or just running. I love playing with kids but sometimes I get too excited and jump. So older children would be best. I am still pretty young (about 1 year) so I will need some training.
LARRY - I’m a 2 year old male who came in as a stray in pretty bad shape. I’m cleaned up now, but I’m still a little shy. I’m a gentle soul, I like to walk close to you, and my tail never stops wagging. Give me love, treat me gently, and I’ll give you my complete devotion.
DIAMOND STAR - My name, I believe, reflects my personality. I am a sweet and affectionate 2 1/2 year old lady, who loves walks, pats and cuddles. At this moment, I am being treated for heart worms, so I need to be somewhat ‘a lady of leisure’ until I am well. I am so, so ready to be in a home where I can be loved, and be allowed to shower affection on my new family. I am a big goofball with a wonderful sense of humor. I think it is time for me to be in your home!
JACKSON - A young pup (only 10 months!) and a great combination of calm and playful. I’m friendly and outgoing. Still need to learn all the ins & outs of housetraining, but I am a smart little guy and I’ll learn fast. Above all I want to please you, so be patient with me, give me lots of love, and let’s be happy together forever!
LONDON - I’m 3 years old and a very talented guy--I can climb fences! But I don’t do it when people are with me, because I’d rather be with them. If I’m alone and bored, though, I’m gonna try to get out. So please keep me inside when you can’t be with me. I am sweet and calm, I love to snuggle, and I don’t mind a quick game of fetch either! ZOSIE - I’m a 2 1/2 year old bundle of energy! I’m a girl who loves to play, and I love love love tennis balls! One thing I don’t love, though, is brooms, or sticks. I really hate those things -- maybe something bad happened with them in my past. My new family will need to be patient with me while I get over this little quirk. Aside from that I would be a great addition to any family and I hope it could be yours!
MEMURY - I›m a 2 years old and was found running loose in the neighborhood. I›m a friendly girl, really looking for that human connection. I take treats gently, love walks and toys, and I potty outside.

Yellowstone National Park When you enter Yellowstone National Park, which takes its name from the yellow sandstone bluffs along the Yellowstone River, you are entering a supervolcano. It lies on the Yellowstone Plateau, with an average elevation of 8000 feet. The two magma channels, underneath, of partially molten rock, created both the bulge and the hot pools and geysers that make the park unique. The magma pools measure 55 miles by 20 miles and more than 600 miles deep, with scientists suspecting it is as deep as 1,800 miles, all the way to the earth’s core-mantle boundary. There have been three terrific eruptions over the past 2.1 million years, with the last one 640,000 years ago, which blew 240 cubic miles of ash into the air. The next major eruption, thankfully, not predicted to be soon, will cause catastrophic changes to the entire world. Earthquakes, occurring at the rate of 1-3,000, per year, also, play a role in the park’s changes. For instance, Old faithful average eruption interval has increased from 64 minutes, in 1950, to 91 minutes in 2015. When you think of Yellowstone, you think of Old Faithful. While it is the most famous, Steamboat is the highest spewing geyser, with Beehive, Grand, Castle, Giantess, and Lion, being other geysers in the park. Together they comprise 75 percent of the world’s geysers. This is one of the most beautiful places on earth and with colorful pools of 160+ degree water and one of the most dangerous. Names like Opel Pool, Liberty Cap, Canary Springs, Turquoise Pool, and Artists Pallet, all describe a few the wonderful and colorful features of the park. Other popular sites are Yellowstone Lake, Yellowstone’s Grand Canyon, Tower Falls, Lamar Valley (for wildlife viewing), Mammoth and Grand Prismatic hot springs, and several folderols (bubbling mud pits). Visitors flock to see the geologic features, drawing 7.2 million visitors in 2015. Yellowstone was the world’s first National Park, established
10
in 1872, with access by railroad starting in 1883. It exists in three states, Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, covering 3,472 square miles (about the size of Connecticut) which made the creation of a state park impossible, therefore, to protect it, a National Park was created. Many of the park’s wildlife species have suffered through periods of slaughter to extinction. Today, with the introduction of 35 Canadian wolves in 1995-96, all of the animal species, existing prior to the park’s establishment, are now present. Old Faithful Inn, an architect’s dream, is original to the park. You can also tour the park in the antique White busses. Other hotels and campsites are available in and around Yellowstone, but they fill rapidly. If you intend to visit, be sure to make reservations well in advance at (866) 439-7375. PRODUCT REVIEW:
LEGEND SUSPENSION REVO-A
BY SCOTT Motorcycle suspension, and suspension in general has 2 main purposes, keeping the tire in contact with the road, (traction) and isolating tire/wheel movement from the chassis (comfort). How you ride dictates which one is more important to you. The holy grail for suspension companies is to do both equally well. Most stock shocks are a compromise to say the least. Motorcycle manufacturers want to accommodate as many different size, weight, and style riders for the least amount of money they can with a heavy emphasis on “for the least amount of money”. I have had touring bikes with stock shocks, full air shocks with an onboard compressor, and very expensive almost infinitely adjustable racing caliber shocks. My problem with the high end racing caliber shocks, you almost had to have a suspension tech to help you set them up and they work in a very narrow range and constantly need to be adjusted for different loads, and you can’t just adjust the preload without adjusting both rebound and compression damping as each affects the others. Legend Suspensions has been around for a long time. Owner Jesse Jurrens and his team have been at the forefront of air suspension technology since the late 90’s, and with the Revo series they have put what they’ve learned in to their first coil spring shock. According to the guys at Legends, on big heavy touring bikes, the majority of your comfort comes from the shocks more than the forks so 12
they use longer springs with a softer spring rate so they are able to stay soft further into the shocks travel for more comfort or as they put it “a larger sweet spot” that works well for varying loads. The spring carries the weight of you and the bike but the shock controls the movement of the spring or you would end up riding a bucking bronco. Legend sets the compression damping internally but the rebound damping on the Revo A is adjustable by turning a knob at the base of the shock. Unboxing the Legend Revo-A shocks, they come very well protected in a bed of expanding foam top and bottom that would have protected them against almost anything short of being run over by a truck. I have to admit I was a little surprised at the build quality, anodized black everything except the shock shaft and Heim bearings with white lettering, rebound adjustments are positive clicks and the spring preload is easy to turn. These shocks would look great hanging on the wall, they’re beautiful. The test mule for this review is a 2014 H-D Ultra Limited with 25k miles on the stock air/oil shocks and I got the heavy duty springs because the bike is almost always loaded down. Installation was a breeze, put the bike on the jack, release the air from the stock shocks, disconnect the hoses and remove the bolts and they’re off. Installation of the Legend Revo-A shocks is just as easy, reuse the stock bolts and lock washers with a little blue Loctite, put the supplied short spacers on the outside, the supplied long spacers on the inside and torque

to spec. The shocks are mounted through Heim joints, which allow the shocks to move without any chance of binding. You will need a little help to set the preload, recommended preload is ¾ to 1” of shock travel, I installed the shocks one morning, just before we were to ride out to Loretta Lynn’s to check out the layout plans for Nashville Bike Week. I bounced on the seat a couple of times and decide the preload was good enough because it was time to leave. Denise and I climbed on and took off, we rode backroads at a pretty good pace and the first thing I noticed was better rear end stability. Sometimes with stock shocks I get an uneasy feeling when the boards get close to scraping, the difference with the Revo A’s was pretty dramatic to me, as with everything suspension it’s hard to put what you are feeling into words, but I quickly had a lot more confidence in the rear end when cornering hard. What I didn’t notice right away was a great deal more comfort and I started thinking back to my decision to not worry about setting the sag. I hadn’t taken the few minutes it would have taken to properly set the preload, my bad. We hit a couple of square edged bumps that made Denise groan, uh-oh, now I’m in trouble. We were in a hurry and riding with other people so I took a couple of turns of preload out at every stop but I didn’t have time to get out a tape measure so that first ride was good but not great. After that ride, I had the time to set the preload so I followed the procedures Legend recommends, stand the bike up with just the weight of the bike on the shocks and have a friend measure from the bottom bolt to a hard point on the bike like the bottom of a tour pack, then sit on the bike, and have them measure to the same place. Adjust the spring preload equally on both
June 2016
shocks until you get the recommended ¾” of sag for a 13” shock. Because I have the heavy duty springs, I had to screw the preload almost all the way out to get to ¾”, and the springs are firm but comfortable when I ride by myself. After you have the sag properly adjusted, you have to ride a little and adjust the rebound damping to suit you, keeping in mind that if you set it too high the tire can lose contact with the ground because it doesn’t come down fast enough, and they can “pack up” if you hit several bumps quickly enough. The flip side is if you don’t set it high enough it can rebound too quickly causing you to feel like you are being lifted from the seat. I love the ride, when I’m by myself it is firm but compliant and I can attack curves a little harder than I could with the stock shocks. When Denise gets on, it gets even more comfortable which is a plus for her, we’ve found we can ride further between stops without beating ourselves up. The beauty of these shocks is now that I have them properly adjusted, which was very easy to do by the way, not only are they more comfortable, but I feel I have more control both solo and 2 up and I don’t have to adjust them at all. I don’t even have to change the rebound damping. For us they are a set it and forget it shock. These shocks are a huge improvement over the stock shocks and probably better than any shocks I’ve ever had. So if you are looking for a shock upgrade for a Harley-Davidson Touring bike I can highly recommend the Revo A shocks from Legend Suspension. They make shocks for most H-D bikes, and you can pick up a pair from most of our advertisers, they are available at most dealerships and independent shops through Drag Specialties.

Thunder Roads® Tennessee will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Bike Nights may have special booth for Ride Card registrations. We will list these events each month on the Event Stops page in the magazine. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives to those checking in with their previously issued Ride Card at these stops. Thunder Roads® Tennessee will also be working with charities and various nonprofit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events. The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all Stops. Some Thunder Roads® Tennessee Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads® will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your TENNESSEE RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! This is not simply a “Chinese Fire Drill” or maddash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.
JUST GET OUT AND RIDE! We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. Bike of the Month
2010 Harley-Davidson Sportster Forty Eight XL 1200X
Congratulations to Richard Barnett on winning our monthly Bike Contest on Facebook! My name is Richard Barnett and I want to say thank you to everyone who voted for my bike. I bought my Sportster brand new at the Cool Springs Harley-Davidson in March of 2010. I was new to riding and with this being my first motorcycle, I spent a lot of time putting miles on the bike that first summer. Six months later, I took my first major trip traveling from Tennessee to California and back to visit my family. After that experience and bond I made with this bike I knew I would be keeping it forever and it was time to start with the upgrades. I have always liked old school bobbers so I knew that was the direction I wanted to go. I added Z bars, new pipes, an air filter, tail light, tank lift kit and added a custom three foot sissy bar. I had the tank painted. Ugly Mug Designs out of Franklin, Tennessee handmade me a custom leather solo bag and a tooled leather seat. It has always been a work in progress and we will see what the years to come have in store for it. If you have a cool custom bike you would like to have featured in our magazine, enter it in our monthly contest by submitting a pic of your bike to ThunderRoadsTn@ gmail.com

MEXICAN LASAGNA
1 Lb. of Ground Chuck & 1 Pkg. Taco Seasoning 1 Red, Yellow & Green Pepper; tops & bottoms removed, along w/ seeds & a good medium rough chop 1 Sweet Onion; rough medium chop pieces 1 Can of X-Large Black Olives; pitted & cut in half 1 Can of Mexican Diced Tomatoes
BLUEBERRY-CINNAMON OVEN OR CAMPFIRE BREAD 1 Loaf of Quality Cinnamon-Raisin Bread 6 Large Eggs (cage free is best) 1 Cup of Half & Half 1/4 Cup of Quality Maple Syrup 1 tsp. of Pure Vanilla Extract
1 Can of Garlic Tomato Sauce
1/2 Cup of Chopped Pecans or Walnuts
1 Can of Refried Beans 1 Large Bag of Mexican Blend Shredded Cheese 1 Package of 8-inch Flour Tortillas 2/3 Cup of Water Braise up your Ground Chuck on med-high heat. Let it cook and get a good deep brown caramelization & add your taco seasoning envelope. Drain. Place onions & peppers in same saute’ pan and again, get a little char color on these, as well. Wipe your pan and on same heat, place a tortilla in pan to get rid of raw flour taste. Now, just start layering in a sprayed 2-quart glass cooking dish. Mix tomato sauce w/ diced tomatoes and spread a thin layer on bottom then start layer (2) tortillas, spread refried bean dip evenly over tortillas, add your halved black olives to your saute’ peppers & onions; put a layer of these, next a thick layer of ground beef, then cheese over top and keep on layering until everything is used up. Majorly essential you cover w/ foil after removing from oven and let it stand for a solid 10 minutes so the layers set up. Top w/ a big dollop of sour cream. This is our new favorite and there’s so many other options to add. Get creative.
SOUTHERN STYLE SIMPLE PIMENTO CHEESE SPREAD
1-1/2 Cups of Shredded Cheddar Cheese or seriously, whatever is your favorite hard cheese. My hubby prefers grated Pepper Jack, so that’s what I do for him. I prefer Cheddar or Colby, so that’s what I use. 1 Jar of Diced Pimentos (not too small) 1/3 Cup of Quality May or Miracle Whip (I do 1/2 & 1/2 Mix thoroughly and add whatever flips your switch to the basic recipe. I add caramelized onions. Make it your own; stamp it.
2 Cups of Fresh Blueberries; Divided Prepare campfire, grill or oven (250 degrees) for a low heat. Place bread slices; slightly overlapping in a broiler pan lined with heavy-duty foil sprayed down with butter spray. Use enough foil to bring it on up the sides high enough to be able to fold over and gently close up; like a giant pouch. Whisk eggs, half & half, syrup & vanilla. Pour evenly over all bread. I personally toast my bread first; gives crust a crunch. Sprinkle with preferred nuts and 1 full cup of fresh blueberries. Bring foil on up straight and fold over top, crimping to seal tight. Place on a grill grate over campfire or grill on propane or charcoal until egg is cooked through; apprx. 30 minutes. Same for in the oven. Remove and just let stand 5 minutes. Open up and get that phenomenal facial and serve up on plates immediately. Serve with homemade honey butter and warmed, additional syrup. Oh, D-amn! these gonna’ make you slap your knee and go in for seconds! Yes, oh yes....they’re that good.
ROOT BEER FLOAT PIE
1 Tub of Cool-Whip or make your own whipped cream using Heavy Whipping Cream & Confectioner’s sugar. Seriously, you can taste the difference. Heaven! 3/4 Cup of Quality Root Beer 1/2 Cup of Half & Half 1 Pkg. of Instant French Vanilla Pudding Mix (or any flavor that tweaks your twerk) 1 Pre-Formed Graham Cracker Crust Whisk root beer, half & half & pudding mix for 2 mins. Fold in 1/2 of whipped topping (keep other 1/2 in fridge so won’t go flat). Spread into pie crust. Spread remaining whipped topping over pie. Refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight. You could do chocolate or pistachio. The possibilities are endless! Soooooo Good and totally Simple. Keep It Simple Sweetie!

MOTORCYCLE OIL
or some reason, motorcycle oil is a touchy subject for a lot of people. Some are fiercely loyal to their particular brand of oil, while others couldn’t care less, or are bargain shoppers and buy whatever is on sale. Oil can be a complicated subject, but we will try to de-mystify it a little. What do the numbers and letters mean? Basically, there are 2 different types of oil viscosities. Viscosity is a fluid’s resistance to flow, it is usually called weight and that’s what we’ll call it here. Back in the day, all oils were straight weight, what is now labeled as SAE50 for example, but modern oil can be a straight weight, or multi weight like 20W-50 for example. Straight weight oils get thicker when cold, and thin out to their advertised weight when hot, multi weight oils thicken too, but not as much, so they are able to withstand much colder temperatures for reasons we’ll talk about later. The viscosity of straight weight oil is measured by heating the oil to 212 degrees, then a measured amount is put in a tube with a precise hole in the bottom and then they time it to see how long it takes to run out. Straight weight oil is good in the summertime when there are no cool mornings. The biggest benefit of straight weight oil is it protects a little better and can last longer, there is more room for oil because it needs fewer additives, and the viscosity doesn’t fluctuate as much as multi weight oils so it is more stable. I use SAE60 weight oil in my bike in the summer, and most of the year, I only put multi weight in it for the really cold months. SAE60 is rated for my bike in warmer temps and I think it helps quieten valve train clatter a little. So why use multi weights at all? The answer is simple, because of the temperature dependent viscosity, straight weight oil doesn’t flow well when it’s really cold. Multi weight oils, such as 20W-50 are actually a product of modern chemistry. About the numbers, the 20W in our example is the oils cold viscosity, or “winter weight”. It is measured at 0 degrees by putting the oil in a beaker with a small steel bar in the bottom, it is then put on a plate with a magnet under it and using a very sensitive ohm meter, they measure
June 2016
how much power it takes for the magnet to move the steel bar in the oil. The easiest way to describe multi weight oil is, the base oil is thinner to start with so it will flow better when cold, and they add viscosity improvers to keep it from getting too thin to protect your engine when it warms up. Viscosity improvers, or VI are fillers that expand when warm to keep the oil from thinning out. The purpose of multi weight oil is so that you don’t have to change oil seasonally with the changing temperatures. That’s the basics on weight, Use the correct weight recommended by your manufacturer to protect your engine at any given temperature. The other controversial subject with oil is synthetic vs conventional, or petroleum. Petroleum oil is pumped from the ground, while synthetic oil is engineered in a laboratory. When crude oil is pumped from the ground, it is refined to the point it is suitable for use as motor oil, some refined oil is “hyper refined” to the point that it may be called synthetic oil according to the federal trade commission, but it still has a crude oil base. The downside to crude oil base is that it starts to break down at a much lower temperature, somewhere just above 240 degrees. Because the hydrocarbon molecules are different sizes, and when the oil gets hot, the smaller molecules vaporize leaving only the larger molecules after many cycles of heating and cooling which can lead to the formation of sludge and varnish. True synthetic oils were developed to withstand the super high temperatures in jet engines, and are made from a byproduct of natural gas. Every molecule is exactly the same size so even at the same viscosity it has less friction, so it stays cooler and starts to break down at a much higher temperature, so high that if your engine got that hot you would have much bigger problems than our oil starting to break down. Amsoil produced the first synthetic oil rated for vehicle use in 1972, and is still a leader in performance synthetics. Any decent synthetic oil is better than even the best conventional oil long term.

Bullet Points
here is a question we get asked from time to time usually by newer permit holders, so we thought we’d answer it here. What is the best handgun to concealed carry while riding? The answer is we don’t know. I know what I carry, and it’s the best one for me, but the only one that can answer that question is you. The first step in choosing a firearm should be deciding what your realistic budget is, keep in mind you usually get what you pay for. Most shops have layaway or you can save up but I don’t think personal protection is a good place to pinch pennies. Inexpensive guns tend to suffer from reliability problems, and have fewer accessories like holsters, sights, and extra magazines available. When you have decided your price range you should decide how you are going to carry. In Tennessee, permit holders have the option to open carry, but concealed is my preference. I don’t want to mess up a good ride because I have to explain to the officer that do I have a permit, or have a little old lady veer into me because she’s staring at my evil sidearm. However you decide to carry, a secure holster is a must, watching your shiny new handgun bouncing and sliding down the road because you just stuck it in your waistband or cheap one size fits most holster would not be good or safe. Once you have decided how you are going to carry it and what your budget is you can begin the search. Deciding on a caliber isn’t as important as it used to be, modern ammunition has just about made that question irrelevant. There are really good personal defense rounds available for almost every caliber out there and the differences are getting smaller all the time. You can pore over all of the dimensions, statistics, and photo comparisons you want, but there’s no way to really know how the gun will feel in a holster or in your hand until you actually try it. I like to go to a full service gun shop with a range on site like our page sponsor Tennessee Gun Country. You can rent several different guns and even the same gun in different sizes and calibers and spend some quality time with each one to see which ones you like and can shoot well. Most of the popular handguns from quality manu-
June 2016
facturers come in at least 3, sometimes 4 sizes. There are no industry standards that define what a full size, compact, sub compact or micro gun should be but here are some general guidelines. Full size, or duty guns are usually the biggest, and also usually the easiest to shoot due to the longer sight radius, added mass to help control recoil, and increased magazine capacity, but because of their size they are much harder to conceal. Compacts are usually slightly smaller than full size in every dimension, in fact, most compact guns are just chopped down versions of their full size brothers. Shorter barrels and shorter grips with the smaller magazine capacities but similar in almost every way. Some even share internal parts with the larger versions. They are a little easier to conceal than a full size and they are still very easy to shoot well. Sub compacts in most cases are different guns and not just cut down versions of larger guns. They have smaller magazines and shorter barrels and they are usually much lighter so recoil can start to become a problem depending on the caliber you choose. The subs are very easy to conceal and can be carried almost anywhere on your person you would like. Shooting them well isn’t difficult, but they do have a shorter sight radius which makes distance shooting more of a challenge to do well. The smallest are the micro compacts. These are sometimes referred to as “Pocket Pistols”. There are some really good pocket guns, and no you don’t have to carry them in your pocket but you can. If you have larger hands some of these guns are too small, they have very small magazines, the short barrels make them hard to aim so some don’t even bother with sights and the light weight can make recoil a problem, but the biggest knock I hear against the micro compact guns is magazine capacity. There are countless studies that show most personal defense shootings happen inside of 21 feet and 3 or fewer rounds are fired so magazine capacity doesn’t seem to be as important as some believe. So the short answer to the question “what is the best handgun to concealed carry while riding?” is whatever you are most comfortable with!

“Rhino” woke up to go to the toilet in the middle of the night and noticed a confirmed sexual predator living in the neighborhood sneaking through his next door neighbor’s garden. Suddenly his neighbor came out from nowhere and smacked him over the head with a shovel, killing him instantly. He then began to dig a grave with the shovel. He went back to bed contemplating what he was going to do about this.
The wife suggested I get myself one of those penis enlargers, so I did. She’s 27, and her name’s KiKi. So far, so good. Solid suggestion. ________________________________________________ This is the story of the young female student flying in a two seated airplane with just the pilot.
His wife said, “honey you’re shaking, what’s wrong?”
He has a heart attack and dies.
Totally astonished Rhino said ‘You’ll never believe what I’ve just seen’ that bastard next door doing…..he still has my f***ing shovel”!
She, frantic, grabs the mike and calls out a frantic May Day.
______________________________________________________ Dezi was outside pulling weeds on a hot summer day when her husband; Lanny, walked up and asked her what they were having for supper. Irritated by the thought of him sitting in the air-conditioned house while she labored away on the weeds, Dezi answered, “I can’t believe you’re asking me about supper right now! Pretend I’m out of town, go inside and make supper yourself!”
“May Day! May Day! Help me! Help me! The pilot has had a heart attack and is dead and I don’t know how to fly. Someone help me! Please help me!” She then hears a voice on the radio saying: “This is Air Traffic Control and I have you loud and clear. I will talk you through this and get you back on the ground. I’ve had a lot of experience with this kind of problem. Now, just take a deep breath, stay calm and everything will be fine! Now give me your height and position.” She then says: “I’m 5’4” and I support Brad Pitt for President” “O.K.” says the voice on the radio, Repeat after me:
So Lanny went back in the house and fixed himself a big steak, potatoes, garlic bread, and a tall beer.
“Our Father, Who art in Heaven”
Dezi walked in just about the time he was finishing up and asked,
Two young boys; R.J. and M.B. walked into a pharmacy one day, picked out a box of tampons and proceeded to the checkout counter.
“Where’s my dinner?” “Wth? I thought you were out of town.” ______________________________________________________ A father told his 3 sons when he sent them to the university. “I feel it’s my duty to provide you with the best possible education. You do not owe me anything for that. However, I want you to appreciate it. As a gesture of appreciation, please each put $1,000 into my coffin when I die.” And so it happened. His sons became a doctor, a lawyer and a financial planner, each very successful financially. When their father’s time had come and they saw their father in the coffin, they remembered his wish. First, it was the doctor who put ten $100 bills onto the chest of the deceased. Then, came the financial planner, who also placed $1,000 there. Finally, it was the heartbroken lawyer’s turn. He dipped into his pocket, took out his check book, wrote a check for $3,000, put it into his father’s coffin, and took the $2,000 cash. He later went on to become a politician.
______________________________________________________
Mr. Empson, the owner & Pharmacist, asked the older boy, “Son, how old are you?” “Eight,” R.J. proudly replied. Mr. Empson continued, “Do you know what these are used for?” R.J. replied, “not exactly, but they aren’t for me. They’re for him. He’s my brother, M.B., he’s four. We saw on TV that if you use these you would be able to swim and ride a bike. Right now, he can’t do either one.” ______________________________________________________ A woman and a man are involved in a car accident. It’s a bad one. Both of their cars are totally demolished, but amazingly neither of them is hurt. After they crawl out of their cars, the man is yelling about women drivers. The woman says, “Wow, just look at our cars! There’s nothing left, but we’re unhurt. This must be a sign that we should become close friends. Flattered, the man replies, ‘Oh yes, I agree completely, this must be a sign. But you’re still at fault... women shouldn’t be allowed to drive. ’The woman continues, ‘And look at this, my car is completely demolished but this bottle of wine didn’t break. Surely it’s our destiny to drink this wine and celebrate our good fortune. The man nods his head in agreement, opens it and drinks half the bottle and then hands it back to the woman. The woman takes the bottle, puts the cap back on and hands it back to the man. The man asks, ‘Aren’t you having any?’ The woman replies, ‘No. I think I’ll just wait for the police...’

by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: Someone out there has to tell me what the bushes are that start blooming in May and have little white flowers that smell like French perfume. There is nothing better than being on the bike rolling down the highway or on a rural road and all you can smell is honeysuckle and those mystery bushes with the white flowers. I’ve asked a lot of people but most folks think they are called “Iduhknow” bushes cause that’s the answer I usually get. Those bushes seem to pop up out of nowhere and are everywhere for a short time and then they disappear again and go back to somewhere until next year with “Iduhknow “ season. I know this month’s column is a little out of character for me but this spring has been real different from most of the past 20 springs in Tennessee. So different that I feel obligated to make note of it. We’ve had springs start off like this before but get dashed by a short cold snap that comes just as the pear trees are starting to bloom and then we don’t have many pears for jam, jelly and preserves later in the year. I have to tell you that those specialties are something I look forward to every year. My wife grew up on a farm where she and her mother did the cooking and her father and brothers worked the fields. She instinctively knows canning and cooking. I am blessed by great meals almost every day and have learned to love real country cooking. She cooks fried green tomatoes, greens, white beans and corn bread, smoked meats, pies, cakes and cans anything she can get her hands on during the late summer and early fall. I’m amazed at how she cans tomatoes in the summer and two years later she’ll open up a mason jar and the tomatoes inside taste just like they were picked at the peak of ripeness the day before. It just seems to make sense to grow something every year and can it so you can have American abundance, top grade food and security into the future. The people on the news are always talking about all the starving children and how the government has to provide breakfast and lunch at school or thousands of children would starve to death.
What happened to all of these children’s parents? Where are they and what are they doing instead of taking care of business and feeding their children. It really doesn’t take much to put a tomato, okra and pepper plant in a pot or, if you have a little back yard, dig up a little spot and put some potatoes in the ground. The great Sam Kinison did a comedy routine about the starving people who live in the desert and how we send them food every year because they can’t grow anything there. His answer was – “SEND THEM U-HAUL TRAILERS so they can move where the food is!!! It’s SAND!!!” So instead of teaching our children how to be good socialists and observers of political correctness why aren’t we teaching them how to grow food at home and teach their parents how to cook and can??? Our government thrives on helpless people who have to survive on government handouts. The cure for the course our nation is on is to make people more self-reliant and able to take care of themselves. Learn how to save seeds from heirloom vegetables and plant them the next year so you don’t have to keep buying seeds. Learn to grow food so you don’t starve!!! This year we had an early spring in Tennessee and very little killing frost after. The grass, trees and bushes are growing like this is the garden of Eden. Farmers and those who grow their own are on cloud nine this year because they will definitely have abundance in their back yard. So why are children starving during the school year? Why does the government have to go trillions of dollars in debt to keep people alive who could actually take care of themselves and eat food they grow? Maybe the government should teach a few folks to fish instead of giving them fish. Give them a pot with some dirt in it and a few heirloom seeds and a book on growing food. It’s an election year, will people demand change and common sense???? IDUHKNOW!!! Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. ADRENALINE BAR AND GRILL Have you heard about a renowned Madison biker bar named Rich and Amy’s Roadhouse? It was a great place with top music and a place that bikers flocked to. Well unfortunately Rich and Amy’s is no more. The good news is that Amy is back with a new place called Adrenaline at 200 Maddox Simpson Parkway in Lebanon, Tennessee. Jump off I-40 in Lebanon, go South on 231 to the first light (Maddox Simpson) turn left and it’s on the right about a block down the road. Adrenaline just celebrated its first year of business in mid-April. They pride themselves on family atmosphere, lots of activities, great food and sixteen beers on tap. Inside there is a 100” projection TV for watching pay per view events like mixed martial arts matches, boxing and, of course, Titan’s football. There is also a pool room and the main bar area. Outside in addition to car parking they have a large bike parking lot with bike size spots, the largest outside patio in the area, a big outside bar, picnic tables, bandstand and a sand volleyball court. The building is new and everything is laid out for fun and enjoyment. Amy has so much experience in the business she has really put together a place that has something for everyone. This isn’t just a biker bar, the customers (aka family) are from all aspects of the community and represent all kinds of different interests. You have young, old, rockers, country, business people, clubs and they all come together to have a ball. The chemistry here is amazing. Mondays are a great day to get Margaritas, Tuesdays are 2 for 1 nights, Wednesday’s are Ladies Night with opportunities to network, art classes and specialty events. Thursday is a little more biker oriented with live music by Smitty & Pam, Friday’s bring lots of games – corn hole, Jenga, beer pong, volleyball, twister and more. Most Saturday’s you can find music and folks coming in to refresh and have some great food and do a little dancing. Sunday’s are funday with live music and free food starting at noon until it runs out. Depending on the Sunday you might find steaks, pork chops, pork loin, BBQ or something else just as good. They also run specials on Corona, Tequila and Dos Equis. They are working on starting a Salsa night with Salsa dancing and associated drink and food specials. The food at Adrenaline’s is definitely a hit. I find the wings to be some of the best in Tennessee, thick with a light crisp on the outside and really juicy and melt in your mouth on the inside. My favorite sauce is the Caribbean Jerk. They make a great Philly Cheesesteak that is to die for and they have a unique dish called Rocker Tacos. The Rocker Taco is a corn tortilla with shredded pork BBQ smothered in Asian coleslaw with very special sauce and a pickle slice. When 42
you come to Adrenaline’s you have to try the Rocker Taco – it’s a three continent party in your mouth like you’ve never tasted before. They have Gyros which have become one of their big sellers, burgers and other very special items. The food is definitely not your typical bar food. This place is special. Some of the bands that you’ll find at Adrenaline’s include Backlit, Missy Garnet and the $2 Pistols, Humps and the Blackouts, Sucker Punch, Phoenix Rising and others. There is one more benefit to spending a little time at Adrenaline. The building that Adrenaline is in is shared with a fitness center that quite naturally has large windows and is well lit. It is rumored that one of the favorite activities for patrons is grabbing a cool one and mentally exercising with the hard bodies next door while doing right arm curls next to the window. While this is probably not comfortable for the members of the fitness center it does seem to be invigorating for the patrons of Adrenaline. This is also a place that has a warm heart and does what it can to help people in need and they do charity events like the poker run and silent auction in March to help a wonderful woman named Doris Fitts who was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Doris has since passed away but Adrenaline was in full support for the family. They also helped with a benefit to support Pastor Ron and Fallen Bikers. These folks focus on fun, community involvement and giving back. When you get to Adrenaline tell Amy, Kimberly and Troy that Bulldog sent you. Let’s Go Ride to Eat!!! If you are out riding to eat and see me please come up and tell me your favorite places to go when you’re hungry and thirsty. “Will Ride to Eat” will be an ongoing article in Thunder Roads Magazine of Tennessee and we want to put the spotlight on the great history and variety of Tennessee’s biker friendly establishments

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) NCOM CONVENTION ROLLS INTO ATLANTIC CITY Odds are, it may not have been the largest Convention ever, but you can bet it was the largest venue, as nearly a thousand biker rights activists from across the U.S. converged at the sprawling Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey for the 31st Annual NCOM Convention, May 5-8, 2016. For more than three decades over Mother’s Day weekend, the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) has provided a platform for diverse factions of the motorcycle community to come together in the spirit of unity and teamwork to address issues of mutual concern, such as pursuing Biker Anti-Profiling legislation; supporting Save the Patch litigation; and reviewing Freedom of the Road victories & defeats; as well as attending seminars on Holding Effective Fund Raisers, Organizational Effectiveness, and Law Enforcement Interaction. A Safety & First Aid seminar was hosted by Master Motorcycle Trainer Christine Firehock of the Kickstart Motorcycle Training Series, followed by Sr. EMT Instructor Dick “Slider” Gilmore’s popular life-saving presentation “The Golden Hour – How to Save a Biker’s Life”. Special Meetings were on the weekend’s agenda in support of NCOM’s many outreach programs for Women In Motorcycling; Clean and Sober Roundtable; National Sport Bike Association (NSBA); and Christian Unity Conference, in addition to the Confederation of Clubs General Patch Holders Meeting, U.S. Defenders Program, NCOM-Legislative Task Force Meeting, and A.I.M. Attorneys Conference. During the Silver Spoke Awards Banquet on Saturday evening, several honorees were recognized for their contributions to “Improving The Image of Motorcycling”, including; MEDIA: Jimmy & Pat Kay of Two Wheel Thunder TV; LEGAL: William Swatek, AIM Attorney for Alabama; ENTERTAINMENT: Singer/Songwriter Arlo Guthrie; SPECIAL RECOGNITION: NCOM Christian Unity, and Bill Foley, former NCOM Board Member from ABATE of Pennsylvania. NCOM’s highest honor, the Ron Roloff Lifetime Achievement Award, was presented to Louie Nobs, Liaison for NCOM Christian Unity. 46
Next year’s 32nd Annual NCOM Convention will be held May 1114, 2017 at the Silver Legacy Resort & Casino, 407 N. Virginia St., in Reno, Nevada. MARYLAND GOVERNOR SIGNING ANTI-PROFILING BILL INTO LAW Hundreds of bikers descended on the State House in Annapolis on Thursday, May 19, for a historic bill signing ceremony with Governor Larry Hogan signing only the second Motorcycle Profiling measure in the country into law in Maryland. The motorcycle anti-profiling legislation passed unanimously through both chambers of the legislature, and without opposition from law enforcement, and emulates anti-profiling legislation passed in the state of Washington in 2011. HB785/SB233, passed 47-0 in the Senate on 4/4 and 137-0 in the House on 4/7, requires a specified statement condemning motorcycle profiling to be included in police policies and require training of officers on “motorcycle profiling,” defined in the legislation as “The arbitrary use of the fact that an individual rides a motorcycle or wears motorcycle-related clothing or paraphernalia as a factor in deciding to stop, question, take enforcement action, arrest, or search the individual.”
HIGH PERFORMANCE RACING MODIFICATIONS NEED PROTECTED Bowing to political pressures and public outcry, the federal EPA announced on April 15, 2016 that it would remove provisions from proposed regulations that would have prohibited street-legal vehicles, including motorcycles, from being modified for racing. But regardless of the Environmental Protection Agency backing off this issue at this time, Congress is considering bi-partisan legislation in both the House and Senate to guarantee that vehicles can continue to be modified for competition on the track. HR 4715 & S 2659, the RPM Act (Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports Act of 2016), would ensure that the American tradition of modifying vehicles into dedicated racetrack competitors is not only continued for today, but will be protected for future generations of race fans as well. CONGRESS ACTS TO CURB HIGHER ETHANOL BLENDED FUEL In response to recent Congressional legislation promoting the use of E15 gasoline (HR 4673 REFUELAct), members of the U.S. House of Representatives have co-sponsored a measure to prevent the EPA from further forcing the controversial fuel onto the U.S. marketplace. E15 contains 50% more ethanol than previously-approved E10 gas, and has not been approved for use in motorcycles, ATVs and other small engine applications. In fact, even its inadvertent use can invalidate manufacturer warranties and cause damage. HR 5108 (the “Food and Fuel Consumer Protection Act of 2016)

was introduced May 10, 2016 by U.S. Rep. Bill Flores (R-TX) “to alleviate the ethanol blend wall under the renewable fuel program.” Specifically, the bipartisan bill would cap the ethanol content of fuel at 9.7%, and would also effect the EPA’s Renewable Volume Obligations under the Renewable Fuel Standard. Under proposed RFS volume requirements for 2017, the EPA calls for 18.8 billion gallons of biofuel next year, representing a nearly 4% increase despite lower demand for higher ethanol blends. HR 5108 would also ensure continued availability of ethanol-free gasoline for older motorcycles. EUROPE’S CHANGING EMISSIONS LAWS WILL CHANGE MOTORCYCLES Your favorite bike may be influenced from afar. “This year promises to bring a record crop of new and updated models from virtually every manufacturer thanks to wide-ranging law changes coming into force thousands of miles away in Europe,” according to Motorcyclist Magazine. “Those changes might not directly affect us, but given the way bikes are developed with global sales in mind many of the new models being developed to meet the latest European regulations are sure to be coming here too.” On January 1, 2016, a whole new set of rules was adopted across Europe. “Regulation (EU) No 168/2013” makes significant changes -- in particular to exhaust emissions limits but also to things like braking systems and electronics. Tests for noise levels have also been changed. The emissions limits are of course much tighter; called “Euro 4,” the new limits reduce the permissible levels of carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons, and oxides of nitrogen in exhausts. Previously America’s rules on emissions were tougher than Europe’s, but now in order to pass the Euro 4 tests new bikes are being fitted with much larger exhausts and kits that include charcoal canisters June 2016
to reduce evaporative emissions. “Next year we’ll be seeing a lot more things like that,” predicts Motorcyclist author Ben Purvis, explaining that “While the rules were passed into law back in 2013 and came into force at the start of 2016, their implementation is staggered to give manufacturers a chance to adapt.” Since January 1st, all newly launched models have needed to comply to be legally sold in the EU. But the more important date is January 1, 2017, because that’s the deadline when existing models must also come into line, though manufacturers can apply for a two-year extension. What else is changing? Emissions aside, the big change is that in Europe all bikes over 125cc will have to be fitted with ABS while smaller bikes will need to have either ABS or a combined braking system. There are also changes to the lighting rules, with daytime running lights becoming mandatory as well as US-style side reflectors. Europe is the closest to America in terms of the types of bike that are popular, but while Americans consume less than a half million motorcycles a year, riders in the EU purchase well over a million. Like lower emissions exhaust systems, economies of scale will likely dictate that even what’s not legally required in the states -like ABS -- will become standard equipment on increasing numbers of our U.S.-imported bikes, as it won’t make sense for manufacturers to build different versions just to suit a relatively small number of American customers. Unfortunately, Regulation (EU) No. 168/2013 also provides for the next-generation “Euro 5” emissions tests, tougher still, and the deadline for their implementation is less than five years away, beginning with 2020 new models.
