CHAPLAIN’S CORNER Pastor Ron Baptiste Founder of Covenant Confirmers Ministries, Inc. www.covenantconfirmers.org Founder of the Tennessee Biker Medical Clinic www.tennesseebikermedicalclinic.org Pastor Ron’s messages can now be heard and downloaded off of the website: just click on the “Broadcast” tab

“THE SPIRIT OF FEAR” Fear is a powerful thing. Fear can hold you back from your destiny, it can make you charge or run from your enemy. During the II World War when it seemed that all was lost for England, Winston Churchill made a statement that rallied their troops together: “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” II Tim.1:7 “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear: but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” The spirit of fear is no more than a threat from the devil. In my ministry I get a few threatening phone calls from time to time, but one thing I’ve learned about life, if someone’s going to get you, they’re not going to call and tell you about it! First of all we must pay close attention to God’s Word: “God has not given us the spirit of fear.” Fear is the opposite of faith. Fear comes from the devil and not from God. I remember when I first started public speaking before large crowds I was very nervous and self-conscience. I asked God not to let me mess up. God asked me one of the most important questions of my life: “Whose name are you more worried about, yours or Mine?” I’ve learned that you can’t be self-conscience and God-conscience at the same time! This scripture also tells me that God has “given us POWER (authority) and LOVE (love conquers all) and a SOUND MIND”. If we know the Word of God we will have this sound mind. In two separate accounts Matt. 14 and Mark 4 we read that Jesus “sent His disciples to the other side,” both events occur on the water in the middle of the sea “and a great storm arose.” And at both events the disciples were in great fear for their lives, in Mark 4 Jesus was asleep in the bottom of the boat and in Matt.14, Jesus came walking on the water! In Mark 4 after Jesus rebuked the wind, the sea, and the disciples, the bible says that even now the disciples were exceedingly fearful. That’s what fear will do to you. Even after Jesus has delivered you, you’re in a habit of being in fear and it’s hard to come out of it. In both accounts there are several points that need to be brought out: 1. Jesus will always send us to the other side, which is the next stage of ministry. 2. The storms of life will always come against you in the middle of your journey. 3. If the storms hit at the start of your journey, you would never leave dry land (the comfort zone). 4. When Jesus walked on the water, the disciples thought He was a ghost. 5. It’s easy to recognize Jesus on dry land (the comfort zone).

March 2018

6. You never seem to recognize Jesus in the middle of your storm unless you know God’s Word. 7. Out of twelve disciples only one got out of the boat to walk on the water to Jesus. The Church is faced with the same odds today and very few are willing to get out of the boat. 8. Sometimes it’s not the “WHAT” you have to leave behind, it’s the “WHO” 9. We must also notice that Peter didn’t sink when he first stepped out of the boat. He was half way, and didn’t start to sink until he took his eyes off of Jesus. He became focused on his circumstances. 10. Peter started out being “God-conscience” and midway became “self-conscience.” 11. Peter never sank all the way. When he called out for help, Jesus immediately stretched out His hand to Peter and walked Peter back to the boat. 12. In the middle of your storm you should ask only one question…. “Lord is it you”? Not do I have enough talent, education or money, just “Lord is it you”? 13. What does Jesus look like in your storm, we know what He looks like in church, but what about your everyday life outside the church? So until next time, “Keep your kickstand up and your face in the wind” To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

WILL RIDE TO EAT

HAWGS N HILLBILLIES ANNUAL CRAWFISH BOIL

Hawgs N Hillbillies at 2909 Cedar Creek Road in Linden TN will hold its annual Crawfish Boil on March 31st by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley Randy and Daphne Leger bought this scenic country bar in 2012. Being from Louisiana, home of Mardi Gras, and being that they opened the bar shortly after the Mardi Gras celebration, they had to have a big party to celebrate their opening. They also wanted to make it a meet and greet as well as a fun farewell to the previous owners. What is more natural for a couple from Louisiana than a big crawfish boil to celebrate?? Well, the opening celebration was such a hit with everyone who attended that it has become Hawgs N Hillbillies signature event. At the first boil the bar ran out of beer and they had to make several trips to town to restock and almost drained all the beer in Linden. It is always held around the end of March or in April. This years Crawfish Boil will be the 6th annual and promises to be bigger than ever. They don’t have to run to town for restock anymore. They know that lots of bikes will be rumbling through the country hills and rolling in all day. Since that first-year word has circulated far and wide and this event attracts bikers from as far away as Kentucky and Alabama. Groups and clubs organize rides to the boil and you can see just about any kind of motorcycle you want to see. It’s almost like a short biker rally at a bar that is so country you want to take your shoes off and go barefoot. The experience is really fun and unique! The menu will include several hundred pounds of crawfish straight from Louisiana, potatoes, corn on the cob and

March 2018

mushrooms. Randy seasons them Cajun style and everything is served up hot and delicious. The cost is based on the cost of the crawfish but will be right around $10 a plate. When I say a plate, I don’t mean a plate of food where you can see the plate. I’m talking a plate that is piled high with crawfish and everything else. You have to be careful with it or stuff will start falling off the sides. You can wash it down with all the favorite American beers, soft drinks or water. There are several ways to roll in but I generally run Highway 13 South of Linden and turn west on 128, go about 100 feet and turn right onto Swindle Creek Road. This is a beautiful run down valleys and draws through the woods on old paved country roads that pass old log buildings and farms. When you get to Cedar Creek Road you see a large abandoned white building on your left at a T intersection. Turn right on Cedar Creek Road and ride the twisting road until you see an old motorcycle on top of a pole on the left. There is a large pasture where you can park or if you get there early enough you can park closer to the bar. The bar opens at 12:00 and crawfish is served about 2pm. You really need to be there before 2pm because the batches of crawfish coming out of the kettle are usually gone around 3pm. Come quench your thirst, have a great Crawfish plate and then enjoy a ride through beautiful backwoods country. When you get there tell’em Bulldog sent you. You can learn more on their Facebook page or by calling 931-589-5334.

GUN REVIEW – SIG SAUER 1911 – WE THE PEOPLE

Happy March, fellow riders! If you are like me, February was a tough month to get much riding in. It seemed every time we had the time to ride it was raining. Let’s hope March is a bit drier and a whole lot sunnier and warmer. As I am sure you have probably guessed, I like guns. A LOT! And while I have a lot of different pistols and revolvers, I have a very fond spot in my heart for those built on the 1911 platform. That said, one in particular caught my fancy this past Christmas and I ended up buying myself a Christmas present – the recently introduced SIG Sauer 1911 – WE THE PEOPLE. As you can see by the pictures, this pistol is fancy. And while it might look more like it belongs in a display case, this gun will spend a lot of time in my shoulder rig and belt holster over the coming months. Like most full sized 1911s, it has a 5-inch barrel, stainless steel guide rod and a barrel bushing - which means power and accuracy. Before I tell you about my experience with this particular sidearm, let’s examine its history. The 1911 platform was developed for the armed forces to replace a less than capable M1892 .38 Long. John Browning answered their call and developed the M1911 which was chambered in .45 Automatic Colt Pistol (ACP). This rimless cartridge was developed by the Frankford Arsenal. Released in 1911 (Duh!), the platform still thrives 107 years later because it is reliable, accurate and very rugged. But buyer beware. One must be careful of some of the lower cost versions of this platform due to reliability issues. Practice with it first, shooting plenty of self-defense rounds to confirm its reliability. If it’s not reliable, take it to a reputable gunsmith as most of these issues can be addressed by polishing and deburring. The 1911 WE THE PEOPLE was a pistol that I could not wait to take to the range. It sports a distressed look, which I found very appealing, 13 stars, representing the original 13 colonies on the top of the slide and 25 stars on each grip panel, representing the 50 states of Union.

March 2018

And if this were not enough, 1776 is engraved on the left side of the slide with WE THE PEOPLE engraved on the right side. All this makes for a handsome pistol, but how does it shoot? Taking 300 rounds of .45 ACP reload practice ammo, and 50 rounds of hollow-point self-defense ammunition, I headed for Montgomery County Shooting Complex, in Southside, TN (one of the finest ranges in TN). The first thing I noticed when I prepared to shoot, was how easily this pistol went from low ready to ready. Like most 1911s, the WTP fell right into position and the sights were easy to acquire. When putting this pistol through its paces, I started with the hand loaded ammo (used brass with 230 grain round nosed FMJ bullets and several different powder/primer combinations). While I take great care with the reloading process, the finished product is never quite a true as the virgin brass used in manufactured ammunition. Because of these variations, finicky or unreliable pistols will not feed the cartridges as easily. This SIG Sauer 1911 ate every single round flawlessly. Not a single failure-to-feed or failure-to-eject occurrence took place during the session. And this was with 230 grain projectiles from Speer and Hornady – each with a slightly different shape. After shooting all of the target ammo, I moved to defense ammunition tipped with Barnes TACXP 185 grain solid hollow points. Again, the SIG digested every single round without incident. My reloaded target and protection ammo is what I would call HOT – on par with +P. This SIG 1911 absorbed the recoil well and the grip panels caused no discomfort in my hands – something I was worried about because of the raised stars. If you are in the market for a new 1911 and want a pistol which looks as good as it shoots, you will definitely want to consider SIG Sauer’s 1911 – WE THE PEOPLE. Until next month, ride often – and remember those driving in cages are not used to seeing us on two wheels. Molon Labe, Mike Noirot

RIDING TIPS

GET READY TO RIDE

If you park your bike for the winter, when the signs of spring are starting to show, you might be starting to get excited about busting out your motorcycle from winter storage and gear it up for its first ride of the year. However, it is so important to make sure you take a few precautions before riding off with your bike fresh out of winter storage. Hopefully you winterize your motorcycle before you stored it during the winter season. If so, prepping your ride for springtime will be relatively quick and easy! Either way, using this guide, it should only take a couple of hours to get your bike in tip-top shape for riding season, so you don’t miss a single day of it when it gets here! Let’s go over the different parts and areas of your bike that you will want to thoroughly evaluate and address before you head out on the open road to enjoy the springtime weather!

IS THE FUEL OKAY?

CHARGED UP?

Stale gasoline is an often forgotten yet very problematic issue with stored vehicles, so we recommend addressing your fuel and fuel system first, before anything else. Gasoline is a very refined chemical composition, and it actually deteriorates very quickly. After a few months, the more combustible elements in gasoline will have already begun to evaporate, which can cause your bike to run rough (or not at all.) If your bike has a high compression engine, like in many sport bikes, old fuel will cause even bigger problems. In addition, while sitting in a tank, gasoline can react with oxygen to create varnish deposits in the fuel system, which can clog lines, filters, and jets or injectors. Due to temperature variations, condensation can also form in a gas tank, adding water to your gasoline, which can create even more severe problems. If you winterized your bike correctly, you will have either drained the fuel or added a fuel stabilizer to the fuel in the tank (fuel stabilizers can extend the life of fuel to a year or more.) If you did drain your tank, take a peek inside for any rust, gunk, or condensation that could cause problems later. Refill your tank with high-octane fuel before you start it up, to make sure the gas running through the system is as fresh as possible. 12

The most common issue with bikes sitting all winter long tends to be the batteries. Every time a battery goes dead, its life gets cut down, and it only needs to be drained a few times for it to become really problematic. Smart riders will have kept their battery on a trickle charger while it was stored, but if you forgot this step, it’s not too late to order one and charge your battery back up for that first ride of the season. We recommend getting a “smart” battery charger that automatically turns itself off so you don’t overcharge and damage it. No matter what charger you pick up, it’s still a good idea to check your battery fluid levels before hooking it up, and top off any low cells. If you have a lithium battery (which is a great upgrade) you’ll need to treat it a little differently. You should still use a trickle charger, but you’ll need one that is lithium battery-specific. Lithium batteries are solid-state, so you don’t top off the cells with water either. If you happen to hook up your battery to a charger and nothing happens, chances are that your battery is just too far gone to be revived. It’s definitely better to find out a few weeks before spring so that you can order a new motorcycle battery without having to delay your first spring ride that we know you’re looking forward to, so check the battery in advance!

RIDING TIPS

CHECK FOR LEAKS

One of the most neglected things on a motorcycle is the brake fluid. Even when your bike isn’t being used, brake fluid is extremely hygroscopic, meaning, that it has a tendency to absorb moisture straight out of the air (brake fluid attracts so much moisture that simply leaving the cap off a bottle overnight can ruin it!)

CHECK THE TIRES

Tires are a part of your bike that should really be checked before every ride; only a few square inches of rubber keeps hundreds of pounds of metal (and you) in contact with the road at any given time, so having tires in good condition is essential. When checking tires after storage, you should be conscious of potential flat-spotting on the tires from sitting for a long time (especially on soft compound tires), and bringing tire pressure up to spec, as air will have undoubtedly seeped out after months of not being used. Check the tire wear too; it may be a good time to go ahead and replace tires before spring hits, so you know you have good rubber for the whole riding season.

CHECK THE ENGINE OIL’S QUALITY AND QUANTITY

At the very least, check and top off the fluid levels in your master cylinder, ensuring you use the correct brake fluid for your bike (different DOT brake fluids should not be mixed.) Ideally, you should do a complete flush of your brake system with new fluid. Another often forgotten fluid is coolant; check and make sure coolant levels are up to spec, especially after your bike’s been sitting for several months. If you really want to go the extra mile, you can do a complete coolant flush also, clearing out all the used coolant with white vinegar and distilled water, and refilling your system with a fresh mix. If your bike tends to run hot or you ride especially hard, check out products like Engine Ice, a racing-approved coolant that can reduce operating temperatures by 20 degrees or more!

CLEANING

Even though you’ve likely given your bike a good cleaning before storage, it’s a great idea to wax it and clean it up to help it look stunning out on the road! Make sure all parts are clean, and any leather saddlebags are treated, and chrome is polished up nicely! A little time spent today can ensure that your bike is ready when you are this spring. And don’t forget to update your wardrobe and maybe invest in a nice new pair of chaps or a stunning leather motorcycle jacket for those cooler spring mornings! With the battery charged, fresh fuel in the tank, all moving parts lubed up, and a paint job that sparkles in the springtime sunlight, there’s only one thing left to do - go ride!

Whether or not you changed your engine oil before storage, you’ll still want to check the oil level before riding. If you didn’t do an oil change before storage, now is a good time to consider that oil and filter change, especially since oil degrades when it sits and all of the contaminants built up last fall have been sitting in there all winter. Every motorcycle is different, so you’ll need to consult an owner’s manual for the exact procedure, but it’s a good practice to change your oil and filter at the same time. March 2018

By Scott High Photos by Cooper Chilton The Easyriders Bike Show Tour rolled in to Nashville again this year. It’s a welcome break from the cold weather and a needed fix for those of us suffering from motorcycle riding winteruptus. It’s a chance to get out of the house and hang out with motorcycle people looking at motorcycles and checking out the vendors. As always, Easyriders brings out some of the best builders showing some of the coolest bikes. One of the coolest bikes at the show for me was built by Matt Harris at 40 Cal Customs in Alcoa TN. His bike, The Melungeon, won the John Green award. They also always have great live music and this year was no exception, everyone enjoyed listening to Stone Senate while they checked out the show. One huge welcome change was free bike parking on Demonbreun St. We really hope that is an every year thing. Check out this year’s list of winners and keep an eye on Easyriders Events Facebook page for upcoming events.

BIKE OF THE MONTH

2008 HARLEY-DAVIDSON SOFTAIL DELUXE

Congratulations to Chris Rodriguez on winning our monthly Bike Contest on Facebook!

Hi, I’m Chris Rodriguez, first off, I want to thank everyone who voted for my “One Syk D’Lux” HarleyDavidson. I bought my HarleyDavidson back in 2008 which was stock. At first, I didn’t have any intention of changing the bike, I liked it as is. As time went on I did small changes and then I had a vision of what my bike could really look like. My color started off with Kandy apply red. Then I added a silver flake base with Kandy orange and a touch of Kandy pink. My bars are 14 inch Carlini Panty Droppers which I had the chrome sand blasted off and painted them Kandy red. I also had the chrome sand blasted off the engine guard to match my bars. I replaced my front stock rim to a 21 inch 80 spoke rim and kept my rear rim stock at 16 inches. I removed my stock exhaust and went with Samson Tru Dual to showcase my fish tail pipes. I wanted to be able to adjust my ride, so I installed Shotgun Air Ride shocks that improved the comfort of my rides. I added a 7 inch Kenwood Double Din Deck with six 6x9 speakers. And two 8.8 JL Audio Marine speakers to fit in my custom lids manufactured from VooDoo Bike Works. With having these many speakers, I had to add a JL Audio and Alpine PDX 600 watt amplifier. If you have a cool custom bike you would like to have featured in our magazine, enter it in our monthly contest by submitting a pic of your bike to ThunderRoadsTn@gmail.com March 2018

REPORT

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 16, 2018) – AMA Pro Hillclimb is pleased to announce its 2018 event schedule, which includes 10 events, four more than in 2017, and two new venues.

Photo Credit: Courtesy of Jay Sallstrom

2018 AMA PRO HILLCLIMB SCHEDULE RELEASED

This unique form of motorsport, which dates to the early part of the 20th century (Harley-Davidson literature from 1910 mentions Motor Company hill climb victories), and was immortalized in the late Bruce Brown’s On Any Sunday motorcycle documentary, has advanced quite a bit in the last two decades. Attendance is up, and the machinery being used in the Extreme and Unlimited classes is as radical as it comes – with 300-plus-horsepower, multi-cylinder nitroburning engines and wildly extended swingarms offering up crazed rides to the top of these steep and jump-laden hills. The season kicks off on June 3 with the first of three events at the legendary White Rose Motorcycle Club hill climb in Spring Grove, PA. Two more events occur there, a night race on July 28 and a daytime fall event on September 23. The new venues include a Laconia hill climb event on June 13 during the massive Laconia Bike Week festivities (300,000-plus attend the weeklong celebration), and an August 11 event at the famed motocross facility at Millville, MN (the facility held hillclimbs through the 1970s until 1982). Returning events include the June 10 and September 30 hill climbs at Bushkill Valley Motorcycle Club Park in Freemansburg, PA, the August 5 event on Mount Garfield in Muskegon, MI, a September 15 event at Middle Tennesse Dragway in Buffalo Valley, TN, and the 2018 series finale on October 14 at the famed Devil’s Staircase hill in Oregonia, Ohio. 2018 Schedule June 3: White Rose Motorcycle Club, Spring Grove, PA June 10: Bushkill Valley, Freemansburg, PA June 13: Laconia Bike Week, Laconia, NH July 28: White Rose Motorcycle Club (evening race), Jefferson, PA August 5: Muskegon Motorcycle Club, Michigan, MI August 11: Spring Creek MX Park: Millville, MN September 15: Middle Tennesee Dragway, Buffalo Valley, TN September 23: White Rose Motorcycle Club, Jefferson, PA September 30: Bushkill Valley, Freemansburg, PA October 14: Dayton MC Club/Devil’s Staircase, Oregonia, OH “2018 is looking to be a great year for American hill climbing,” says series manager Rob Redmann. “We’re running ten races this year, with two new venues, so it’s going to be plenty exciting for fans and riders alike.”

The action at any AMA Pro Hillclimb event is always hot and heavy, and given the history and difficulty of the hills on the schedule – and the wild machines that navigate them – fans and their families are sure to enjoy themselves. There are also VertiCross events this year at all events, which feature four bikes running the hills at once, side by side. It’s hugely exciting, and fans love it. For tickets, please contact each individual club or event. For information about the series, please contact Rob Redmann at rredmann@ amaproracing.com. March 2018

MUSIC STARS ON TWO WHEELS!

Barry Gibb (The Bee Gees)

Wynonna Judd

By Rebel Ron

Ever since I was a little boy watching a TV show, most have never heard of, I have wanted to ride on two wheels. That TV show was called “Then Came Bronson.” It was about a guy who traveled around America on a Sportster rescuing damsels in distress to winning hill climbs on his street Sporty and more unrealistic adventures. I could hardly wait until I was big enough to get off my pedal powered bicycle on to something with a motor. Many many years and several scars later I still enjoy my knees in the breeze.

Queen Latifa

I am also a long time music lover who appreciates most genres of it. Music has been very instrumental in my 60 years on earth. Simply listening to it because it reflects on the happiness, hardships, and humor of life to working in the biz too. One of the benefits of living in or around Music City is that we often see musicians cruising our beautiful backroads and fast growing city. Famous folks need wind therapy too. Since the weather has been too dang cold to have any fun bike events, or even ride much this year, I give you “Photos of Artist on Two Wheels!” Some of these are from back in the day and some more recent. Get the bikes ready y’all, spring is just around the corner. TRM will soon be filled with events for us all to enjoy. Ride safe & often!

RIDER SAFETY

LEARNING TO RIDE IN THE RAIN I was happy to begin the 2018 coaching season in February arriving at Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson for my first New Rider Course at the Harley-Davidson Riding Academy. Friday evening was simply gorgeous with temperatures in the 60s and warm sunshine. Maggie, my fellow coach for the weekend, and I welcomed our students and settled in to our classroom activities. Checking the weekend weather, we announced the findings to our students. It wasn’t just a little rain. It was 100% chance of rain for the entire weekend. This is where I ask you to use your imagination and put yourself in the boots of a Riding Academy student with no riding experience. You are excited about learning to ride a motorcycle. And, you feel afraid, some anxiety and building stress about the imposing rain. You have never ridden a motorcycle before and you are going to learn to do it in the rain. The student’s faces showed trepidation as Maggie and I discussed the safety gear required for riding and encouraged some type of rain gear and a change of clothes. Saturday morning arrives, and the weather report was spot on. Maggie and I are smiling and it’s easy to see that we are excited about the day. Our students are certainly not as excited as we are as they put on their gear and head out into the rain. Put yourself in their wet boots, why is the rain so intimidating? Rain is intimidating because we are fearful of sliding and losing control. All of us, not just new riders. After all, we had talked about traction in the classroom and they learned that weather has a negative effect on traction. Each one of them powered through the morning and we watched their confidence grow, even in a steady and sometimes heavy rain. Not only were they learning to ride, they were doing it in bad weather conditions. And, even though they didn’t realize it at the time, each one was building on their new skill sets: changing gears, starting and stopping smoothly, braking, negotiating curves and riding time on a wet surface. Rain provides many distractions for the rider. The fears mentioned above, feeling cold and wet, rain drops can hurt, your vision is decreased, it is harder for other drivers to see you, increased anxiety and it can just simply be miserable sometimes. As we told our students, there are some things you can do to reduce the risk imposed by impending rain. Just pull over. Sometimes the best course of action is a cup of coffee or a milkshake and wait for the rain to pass. Remember to SEE (Search, Evaluate, Execute). Our new students were taught early on the importance of this strategy: Search means to scan ahead, behind and side-to-side to see the

March 2018

factors that might affect you. Evaluate means that you’re thinking about what could happen. Execute means to use smooth and well-timed actions like adjusting speed and position. Slow down. Wet roads reduce your traction. Increase the distance between you and the vehicle in front of you to have more reaction time should you need it. Check your tires and replace them when needed. Tread depth is reduced by wear and as less water is pushed out between the tire and the road surface an increased risk of hydroplaning can occur. I know riders that avoid the rain. Instead of avoidance, think about the risk and how to reduce it. Be prepared with proper rain gear and use the strategy of SEE. Maggie and I were so proud of our Riding Academy graduates as we presented certificates during our graduation ceremony. We also found that our new riders were appreciative of the opportunity to learn to ride in the rain. But, this was in retrospect, as several students noted how intimated they had been. Be prepared for your next ride in the rain and remember, safe riding starts with you! Donna, along with being an avid riding enthusiast, is a MSF motorcycle safety coach for the state of Tennessee and a HarleyDavidson Riding Academy Coach. She is a member of the Motor Maids, H.O.G. and Ladies of Harley.

Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: I served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970. As many of you know the Vietnam War was not the most popular war that our country engaged in and fair or not, those who participated in that war were shown in a very negative light by the media and vilified (made a villain) by those who were against the war. 50 years ago it was the TET Offensive of 1968 in Vietnam and the turning point that fired anti-war sentiment across our nation. When I came home from Vietnam the only people I could really hang out with were fellow veterans, a few school mates and close friends. In those days the businesses didn’t give any special benefits or recognition to veterans of the war. If you were lucky at a bar and a veteran of Korea or WWII happened to discover you were a veteran they might buy you a beer and give you a slap on the back. However, you were just as likely to be spit on, cussed or punched and called a baby killer by someone against the war. Vietnam Vets had to welcome their own with “Welcome Home Brother.” After the attack of 9/11 a wave of patriotism swept over the country and apparently, enough time had passed that most in this country appreciated those willing to defend the United States against terrorist enemies. Even many who trashed Vietnam Vets in the past. When a service member was killed in service he was escorted by veterans, many on motorcycles, and the streets to his grave site were often lined with citizens waving American flags and saying thank you. For me and many Vietnam Veterans it was a duty to honor the sacrifice of those in service. It wasn’t long before businesses found it acceptable to honor American heroes. I know Veteran’s Day is still several months in the future but I’m sure you know thousands of businesses across this country do something special for veterans on Veterans Day. Some even extend specials for the whole week of Veteran’s Day or even the month! Some businesses have gone so far as to offer discounts to veterans every day of the year. Two of those companies have been Home Depot and Lowe’s. Both of these corporations have offered March 2018

a discount to veterans for many years. All you had to do was show a military ID or a paper from the Department of Defense of the Veteran’s Administration and they would knock 10% off the cost of your purchase. The Home Depot policy has been long standing and basically unchanged for years. I present my military retired ID at check out and get 10% off. Generally, the clerks also thank me for my service. As a Vietnam Veteran who didn’t get that treatment when I came home, having someone thank me for my service is especially nice. Lowe’s used to do the same thing, although they didn’t trust their cashiers to give your 10% on their own, it required calling for a manager. After the manager was located and walked from the other end of the store, he or she would look at my ID card and authorize my 10% discount. While I got my 10%, Lowe’s always made it more difficult and cost you time. For several years it has been my suspicion that they really didn’t like giving you 10% but would if you were stubborn enough to go through their approval time out process. Well, as of January 1st, 2018, Lowe’s now requires veterans to register as a veteran with their system in order to qualify for the 10% discount. My federally issued Retired Military Identification Card is no longer good enough for Lowe’s. They want me to register and keep some of my personal information in their system. In the age of identity theft does it really make sense for me to give my personal information to any business for any purpose? Am I just being marked by Lowe’s like other groups of people have been marked in the past. Marked for some level of exploitation? Maybe they should just tattoo me with a special number or pin a piece of cloth to my jacket to identify me when I walk in the store. Everyone is free to do what they like but I am through going to Lowe’s for anything. If Lowe’s is trying to run me off to save 10%, then consider me run off!!!! Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. Bulldog * My monthly column reflects my personal point of view and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Publishers of this magazine, but they, like me, acknowledge the sacrifices made for the privilege of Freedom of Speech, therefore, they gratefully let me rant. Thank you for reading my rants. Hope my opinions don’t offend anyone, but, we all should be grateful for the right to have free opinions.

LEPRECHAUN’S SECRET STEW 1 Pkg. of Kielbasa (comes with 2 long pieces per Pack, like a left & right that forms a big O) 2 Pkgs. of New Orleans Flavor Sausage Links (these are all in the “sausage section” of your grocery’s Meat Dept. 1 Bag of Very Small Red Potatoes 1 Bag of Petite Carrots; pre-peeled, in veggie dept. 1 Can of Kernel Corn 1 Large Head of Cabbage Salt & Pepper to Taste 2 Boxes or Cans of Chicken Stock - unsalted kind 1 Cups of Water 1 Bottle of Dark Beer (if all you have is light, o.k.) 4 Chicken Bouillon Cubes (place in small cup of hot water to dissolve down) 1 Tbls. of pre-minced Garlic (in veggie dept.) 1 Small Palmful of Coriander 1 Small Palmful of Parsley 1 Tsp. of Chili Flakes (add more if you prefer spicier) In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add a large pat of margarine to pan, and chop up your Kielbasa into 1/4 inch pieces. Cut up the Louisiana flavored sausages the same way and fry up with Kielbasa. In a separate Stew Pot, add your chicken stock and water and bouillon cube mixture on medium-low. You want a slow bubbling boil. Chop up your cabbage into long strips and take the time to peel apart the layers. Once you put the stew pot lid on, the cabbage will wilt down fast. Either cut your baby carrots into halves or leave them whole; your choice. Add garlic and all spices and corn to the broth. Once your sausages are browned well on all sides, add to the broth, cut your red potatoes in half and add to the broth. Put a lid on this and just let it go for approx. an hour and a half. If you do in a Crock Pot then cook on low for as long as it takes for potatoes and carrots to be soft. While it’s cooking; throw in a couple Tbls. of quality margarine or butter; your preference. Don’t forget your chili flakes as you want this spicy, but not hot. There’s a big difference in taste between the two. Serve this up with some really rustic, crusty bread that has been smeared with butter and garlic powder and broiled off in the oven. This is total comfort food and it literally takes like 15 minutes to get it all going and in the stew or crock pot. It’ll have ya’ doing the Irish Jig right in your own kitchen!

BEER & BACON MAC N’ CHEESE 1 Box of Large Elbow Macaroni; cooked 5 mins. shy of being soft, as has to finish cooking in oven. 1 Whole Pkg. of Bacon cooked up; place on rack over sheet pan & cook in oven @ 425 until crispy, dark golden brown. No splatter mess on stove. Simple. 1 Tbls. of Minced Garlic 1/2 Cup of Heavy Whipping Cream 3 Cups of Shredded White Cheddar Cheese 1 Cup of Shredded Parmesan Cheese 1 Lg. Tub of Whipped Philly Cream Cheese 1 Lg. Vidalia Onion; large chop; sautéed golden 1 Tbls. of Spicy Brown Mustard 1 Bottle of Amber or Dark Beer Mix all together (except bacon) in your deep baking dish until well blended. Cook at 400 degrees or until top is golden brown. Remove from oven and put in your crisp bacon, leave plenty to sprinkle over top. Serve this immediately piping hot before bacon can turn limp. This is phenomenal twist on old style.

OH SO LUCKY! IRISH GREEN CUPCAKES w/ GREEN BUTTERCREAM FROSTING 1 Pkg. of White Cake Mix Follow package directions, only add GREEN food coloring to the mix as dark as you prefer. Bake as directed. If baking directly in cupcake tins be sure and spray bottom & sides generously. If baking in cupcake papers, only fill 3/4 full. Cool thoroughly. Buy 2 cans of Betty Crocker Buttercream frosting and again add food coloring to the desired green that you want. Frost cupcakes generously. Take a butter knife and dab at the frosting to make stiff peaks after you’re done frosting. Looks very pro. *Tip: Take frosting and place it in a plastic ketchup bottle like you see in Diners, and stick it a 1/2 inch into the side of your cupcake and squirt to have a creamy filling surprise when you bite into cupcake. Another cool & delicious treat tip is chop up a bunch of chocolate mint squares, sprinkle over quality Vanilla ice-cream and then pour heated, bottled Caramel sauce all over the top. So Simple Sweetie!

Happy St. Patty’s Day Bikers!

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)

TWO WHEELS TV NETWORK SET TO LAUNCH For motorcycle enthusiasts who can never get enough twowheel action on television, TwoWheelsTV.com “all motorcycle network” is set to launch this Spring. Whether you’re seeking live racing action, or commentary from leaders within the industry, the new “over-the-top” (OTT) streaming network is dedicated entirely to motorcycles. “Like Netflix for motorcycling,” according to founder Alan Smith, Two Wheels TV (TWTV) will be available on an annual and monthly basis, and promises to deliver live motorcycle racing that’s streamed from all over the world, plus an on-demand library of movies, shows, race archives and other exclusive motorcycling programs. The soft launch is for iOS and Android devices; register at TwoWheelsTV.com. The full launch is expected in April, and TWTV will be supported by Google Chromecast, Apple TV, Amazon Fire and Roku. The launch of Two Wheels TV coincides with a spike in the conversation about U.S. motorcycling, as efforts to reinvigorate the industry have come from the grassroots level (“Give a Shift” and “Plus 1”), as well as a new initiative from the Motorcycle Industry Council (“Ride”). FLORIDA RIDERS FIGHT FOR STRICTER LAWS ON CRASHES INVOLVING CARS More than a hundred motorcyclists made their way to the Capitol in Tallahassee on Monday, February 12, as riders with ABATE of Florida, Inc. spoke to legislators about some of the safety issues they face every single day. The state president of ABATE, James “Doc” Reichenbach, told WCTV Eyewitness News that their main focus is trying to cut down on deaths due to drivers who are distracted. He wants to see a bill passed that protects the motorcyclists on the road. Reichenbach said the most common type of crash involving a car and motorcycle is from left hand turns. Reichenbach said he’s had five times more motorcyclists die recently from accidents Involving distracted or careless drivers. He believes this type of accident should be considered manslaughter. “We’re getting killed. We’re getting run over by cars and trucks and everything else and trying to stop that. We’re fathers, we’re mothers, and we have children. We’re just like anybody else, we just happen to ride motorcycles, and we shouldn’t be an endangered species,” said Reichenbach, who also serves as Chairman of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM). SOUTH DAKOTA “GANG BILL” OPPOSED BY MOTORCYCLE GROUPS Legislation addressing “gangs” in South Dakota is raising concerns among those in the motorcycle community, as House Bill 111 seeks to revise certain definitions regarding criminal street gang activity that some rider groups feel could target them. “It jumped out at me that it’s basically a profiling bill,” said Bryon Farmer, Chairman of the South Dakota Confederation of Clubs, who told KDLT News ”There are some good issues to trying to 30

keep street gangs out of our communities and out of our state, that part I’m okay with. It’s just the broad range of the way the bill is written, it could be used against way too many good groups that are out there.” Motorcycle groups like ABATE of South Dakota are testifying in opposition of the bill they say targets them as gang members. “It’s not just motorcyclists; it’s so broad that just about anybody that’s wearing similar shirts could be defined as a street gang,” said Dave Brende, President of “Those Guys” ABATE Chapter. “We don’t want to be lumped in as a street gang member, we do a lot of good for this community and so do all the other clubs and organizations.” NEW MEXICO MRO HONORED BY MSF & DOT The New Mexico Motorcycle Rights Organization (NMMRO) was presented an award from MSF and DOT for all the work they do to promote Safety Awareness in the state and for providing support to motorcycle crash victims through their “Biker Down” program. The award was presented during the annual Motorcycle Advisory Safety Program Committee Meeting, attended by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), New Mexico Department of Transportation (DOT), MSF Rider Coaches, local dealerships and the University of New Mexico Traffic Research Unit that keeps track of crash statistics for the state. Among the top topics discussed was promoting basic rider and advanced rider training to enhance rider skills to all ages. “We have always concentrated on the campaigns such as Watch Out For Motorcycles which we will continue; but it is just as important that we also promote rider responsibility,” said Annette Torrez, NMMRO Chairperson. Torrez, who also serves on the board of directors for the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) added that “With enhanced riding skills there are many factors that we as riders can be more aware of to avoid or prevent a crash.” The Motorcycle Safety Achievement Award states in part; “The NMMRO ceaseless efforts have made significant and enduring contributions to the safety of motorcyclists in the State of New Mexico. The professionalism, initiative and action demonstrated by NMMRO has contributed to saving lives.” NCOM CHRISTIAN UNITY REPORT In a recent Christian Unity Report submitted by Louie Nobs, Christian Unity Liaison to the NCOM Board, it was reported that “Over the past year, Christian Unity groups in the Midwest, Oklahoma and Texas have been growing and having regular meetings. As the result of information that was given in our Region II CU meeting in Oklahoma last November, some members have pursued certifications through FEMA for Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT). This will help them get into areas in emergency situations to serve and assess with first responders. “I was able to share some of my experiences as a CERT member during Hurricane Harvey in the Houston area. Some of the tasks I was able to do was rescue people from flood waters by air boat, serve in shelters, and get supplies to area shelters. In 2016, the Milwaukee-based motorcycle manufacturer agreed to pay a $12 million civil fine and stop selling illegal after-market devices that caused its vehicles to emit too much pollution, in violation of the Clean Air Act, and was ordered by the EPA to spend nearly $3 million to instead retrofit or replace woodburning appliances with cleaner stoves to mitigate air pollution. The Justice Department in July cited a new policy by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and an ongoing review of the penalty by a government auditor in proposing to drop the $3 million penalty from the settlement. A U.S. District Judge must still decide whether to approve the revised agreement. The Harley-Davidson settlement resolved allegations that Harley sold about 340,000 “super tuners” enabling motorcycles since 2008 to pollute the air at levels greater than what the company certified. Harley-Davidson did not admit liability, and said previously it disagreed with the government, arguing that March 2018

the tuners were designed and sold to be used in “competition only.” The Harley-Davidson settlement came amid greater scrutiny on emissions and “defeat devices” by U.S. regulators after Volkswagen AG admitted to using illegal software to evade U.S. emissions standards in nearly 600,000 U.S. vehicles in September 2015. INDIA PULLS BACK ON PLAN TO ENFORCE APPROVED HELMETS Police in India have withdrawn a rule requiring motorcycle riders and passengers to wear ISI-approved helmets, after a week of seizing non-approved helmets and fining riders. Motor Vehicle Rules in Karnataka, a state in southwest India, require that helmets have the ISI mark (that certifies acceptable levels of quality and crash performance). Traffic police officials had set the deadline of February 1st for all riders and pillions (passengers) to switch to ISI branded helmets. Now though, this deadline has been withdrawn. In announcing this sudden change, the Commissioner of Police said in a statement; “Traffic policemen on duty cannot decide the standard of helmets by a mere physical inspection and hence it is unfair to penalizing bikers for wearing sub-standard helmets… Each and every helmet we confiscate would have to be sent to the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) office and we could not impose a fine until we got the results.” Many bikers who wear helmets branded with ECE and DOT marks, said to be better than ISI in terms of quality and crash performance, complained that the ISI-helmet rule was unfair. Now that the BIS has clarified that a helmet’s quality cannot be assessed by just looking at it, the traffic police department of Karnataka will no longer check for the ISI-mark on helmets worn by riders and pillions of two wheelers in India. A couple are sitting in their living room, sipping wine on St. Patty’s Day. Out of the blue, the wife says, “I love you so very, very much!” “Is that you or the wine talking?” jokes the husband. “It’s me,” says the wife, “Talking to the wine.” --------------------------------------------------------------“Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad,” gushed Sean, son No. 1. ‘Sorry I’m running late. I had an emergency at the hospital with a patient, you know how it is, and I didn’t have time to get you a gift.” “Not to worry,” said the father. “Important thing is we’re all together today.” Conor, Son No. 2 arrived. “You and Mom look great. Dad, I just flew in from Montreal between depositions and didn’t have time to shop for you.” “It’s nothing,” said the father. “We’re glad you were able to come.” Just then the daughter, Emma, arrived “Hello and happy anniversary! Sorry, but my boss is sending me out of town and I was really busy packing so I didn’t have time to get you two anything.” After they had finished dessert, the father said, “There’s something your mother and I have wanted to tell you for a long time. You see, we were really poor and very busy, but we managed to send each of you to college. Through the years your mother and I knew we loved each other very much, but we just never found the time to get married.” The three children gasped and said, “WHAT? You mean we’re bastards?” “Yup,” said the father, “Cheap-ass ones’ too”. --------------------------------------------------------------An Irish man and woman were married for many years. The old man would shout, “When I die, I will dig my way up and out of the grave and come back and haunt you for the rest of your life!” Neighbors feared him. The old man liked the fact that he was feared. Then one evening, he died when he was 89. After the burial, her neighbors, concerned for her safety, asked, “Aren’t you afraid that he may indeed be able to dig his way out of the grave and haunt you for the rest of your life?” The wife said, “Let him dig. I had him buried upside down, and I know for a fact he won’t ask for directions.” 32

Ya’ know, I consider myself to be a positive kind of person but swear there are days when people just irritate the hell out of me and it’s then that I come to the realization that some people couldn’t be nice even if a Unicorn shoved a Fairy Wand up their ass while Judy Garland stood there singing Somewhere Over The Rainbow. --------------------------------------------------------------Brenda O’Malley is home making dinner, as usual, When Tim Finnegan arrives at her door. “Brenda, may I come in?” he asks. “I’ve Somethin to tell ya”. “ Of course you can come in, you’re always welcome, Tim. But where’s my husband?” “ That’s what I’m here to be telling ya, Brenda.” There was an accident down at the Guinness brewery...” “Oh, God no!” cries Brenda. “Please don’t tell me.” “ I must, Brenda Your husband Shamus is dead And gone. I’m sorry.” Finally, she looked up at Tim.. “How did it happen, Tim?” “ It was terrible, Brenda. He fell into a vat Of Guinness Stout and drowned.” “Oh my dear Jesus! But you must tell me the truth, Tim. Did he at least go quickly?” “Well, Brenda.... No. In fact, he got out three times to pee.” ------------------------------------------------------------------What Leprechauns do for kicks: Step 1: Go to the Pet Shop Step 2: Buy Bird Seeds Step 3: Ask Cashier how long it will take for birds to grow? Step 4: Watch reaction --------------------------------------------------------------Just got a piece of Lucky Charms cereal stuck between my toes walking through the kitchen. Clearly my dog isn’t doing his part of the chores around here. --------------------------------------------------------------This year; in 2018, Easter and April Fool’s are on the same day. So, have yourself some fun while you sit back with a shot of Bailey’s in your coffee. Tell the kids to hunt all over the backyard for eggs you didn’t even hide! Hey now, times like this are magically delicious. --------------------------------------------------------------A drunk staggers into a Catholic Church, enters A confessional booth, sits down, but says nothing. The Priest coughs a few times to get his attention But the drunk continues to sit there. Finally, the Priest pounds three times on the wall. The drunk mumbles, “ain’t no use knockin, there’s no paper on this side either!”

We hope to reduce motorcycle accidents caused by inattentive drivers resulting in avoidable right of way collisions. Our Campaign Save A Life program is teaching new drivers in our High Schools awareness and defensive techniques to avoid these accidents. MAFT honors the survivors, the lost and the families of these accident victims at a Vigil each autumn. = Awareness, Respect and Education MAFTINFO@ AOL.COM 615-799-8600 MOTOR MAIDS, INC.
