Spring is just around the corner and you’re probably getting a little Spring Fever about now and are ready to get out and ride! We sure are, so we took a short break today from getting the magazine ready to go to print since it was a beautiful sunny day and a balmy 67 degrees. We took a nice ride with great friends on some awesome curvy backroads and ended up in downtown Nashville where we had a nice lunch outside at a rooftop bar overlooking the river. Gotta take advantage of days like this when you get the chance, especially in February! Can you believe that 17 years ago this month the first issue of Thunder Roads Magazine of Tennessee was born!? In March of 1999 Thunder Roads Magazine started as a 36 page black and white newsprint magazine in Tennessee. Now, Thunder Roads is a network of 18 individual state wide free magazines, distributed in all or parts of 22 & 1/2 states. We could not be more proud to be a part of such an amazing network of publishers and are so glad that we decided 20 months ago to purchase and become the publishers of the Tennessee edition. Are you as excited as we are to kick off the 1st Annual Tennessee Thunder Run Ride n’ Win contest!? Well, it’s almost that time! You will be able to pick up your ride card and register for a chance to win prizes beginning April 1st. We know we talked about it last year but in the end we decided we just weren’t ready to tackle something this big after just a few months publishing the magazine, we’ve learned a lot over the last year and now we’re ready. Check out this issue for all the details and the April issue for a list of Registration and Ride Stops. Each issue throughout the season will be updated with new stops and winners in the contest so make sure to pick up a copy at one of our wonderful ADVERTSIERS establishment and “LIKE” our Facebook page to keep up with all that’s happening.

Hearing from God I believe that in these “Last Days” it is more important now more than ever that we “Hear from God.” With all these different denominations and religions, everybody has their own definition of the Holy Spirit, what the Holy Spirit is and what the Holy Spirit does. Instead of believing man made theology, why don’t we just believe the Word of God? When my children were young and Christmas came around, I would stay up all night assembling their toys. I, a former race car driver & engine builder, didn’t think I needed the “Instructions,” so if it looked right to me then that’s where the part would fit. Finally after all night and plenty of parts left over, I would pick up the “Instructions” and start all over. If your faith isn’t working, pick up the “Instructions” and start all over, it doesn’t matter if it seems right to you. If healing is not working, read the “Instructions,” if prosperity is not working, read the “Instructions,” if deliverance is not working, read the “Instructions, if you have no peace and joy, read the “Instructions.”

History of Motorcycles Part 13
At the close of the 90’s we had reached a point in our journey where Harley Davidson was still coming on strong, Japanese bikes were twisting the throttle and climbing the ranks, and Indian was creeping back onto the scene with some solid bikes. The 2000’s wouldn’t slow manufacturers down either. Harley Davidson brings the fuel injected V-Rod to the table in 2002. The V-Rod also combined overhead cams and liquid cooling and delivered an ass kicking 115 horsepower. The Sportster line of bikes received updates to its seating positions, frames, and engine mountings, as well as the addition of the XL Forty-Eight in 2010. The touring editions at Harley also had some work done; improving transmissions and creating a new frame that provided a longer wheelbase to improve seating position and maneuverability. 2006 brought us the all-new FLHX/I Street Glide to the touring family as well. The biggest change for Harley this decade was quite possibly the addition of the 2009 FLHTCUTG Tri Glide Ultra Classic. Harley’s first three-wheeler for public purchase. Harley Davidson wasn’t the only company hard at it during this time. After purchasing Indian Motorcycle Company

from a London based private equity firm (Stellican), Polaris Industries Inc. took over production and relocated from Kings Mountain, N.C. to our very own Spirit Lake, Iowa. While a modest number of Indian Chiefs had been produced in North Carolina, the resources of Polaris and the move to Iowa proved to be stellar for Indian. Indian not only began production again, but they introduced the powerful new Thunder Stroke 111 V –Twin in 2013 at Daytona Bike Week. In 2014 Indian unveiled the Indian Chief Classic, Indian Chief Vintage, and Indian Chieftain all equipped with the powerful Thunder Stroke engine as well. The Indian Roadmaster would soon follow, and then the Indian Scout, and the Chief Dark Horse. Indian came back with a vengeance…and with the mindblowing power behind these new bikes that has even the most expeditious riders shaking their heads. So the industry just keeps chugging along, perfecting the objects of our affection at every turn…and we all thank you for that, but what do these guys have up their sleeves for us in the future? Over the years concept bikes have emerged that look to the consumer to be straight out of the mind of H.G. Wells. But what ever happened to these bikes? Well,

just as in the early years, development stages didn’t always progress past the prototype stage. Many of these concepts proved to be nothing more than cool ideas… ideas that appear feasible on paper, but lack the ability to actually function on the road. Despite this fact, some of them are still worth a look.
availability…electric bikes can go from 0-100 mph in one gear if you want to. The choice will soon be yours to make.
The Nuclear Fusion Motorbike 2050 is a concept designed by Romain Herment. This concept bike uses nuclear energy as a power source. Herment calls it the Motorbike 2050 Version 2…..makes me wonder what kind of explosion Version 1 ended in. This futuristic bike uses two inexhaustible natural elements (deuterium and tritium) to allow for a sustainable ride should dark days come to the fuel industries. The Lamborbiker is a tribute to Nicolas Tesla and Ferrucio Lamborghini. This bike takes its name from invention and design…and with good reason. The Lamborbiker has hubless wheels and smooth clean lines, but is far from the prototype stage, as all design has been done via computer, and even the engine design has only gone as far as 3-D imaging thanks to specialized software.
From the infancy of the motorcycle to the possibilities of what the future may hold for our two-wheeled friends; the motorcycle has come a long way. Motorcycles vary considerably depending on the task for which they were designed, such as long distance travel, navigating urban traffic, cruising, sport and racing, or off road conditions. No longer must riders endure back breaking rides that can heat the nether regions upwards of 300 degrees. Not to mention, we can travel hundreds of miles before succumbing to the magnetism of a gas station. Today motorcycles are the most common type of motor vehicle in the world…200 million motorcycles (33 bikes per 1,000 people) to be exact. Not bad for the idea that stemmed from Roper’s twisted imagination and a shitty bicycle so many years ago. Bikes today are affordable, trustworthy, comfortable, and above all still the coolest thing since sliced bread. Melanie J Schwarte, Thunder Roads Magazine® Iowa
The Fallout is a concept bike that was conceived as a tribute to the classic chopper. The Fallout, sports a single sided swing arm that meshes with the Bimota sourced frame in order to create a completely unique “Hub-Centered” steering motorcycle. It has short bobber style handle bars, chopped exhaust, and a long tank to bring out chopper aesthetics that bikers know and love. Combined with a bit of futuristic body styling, this becomes old school biker meets hover craft. With all of these potential avenues for the motorcycle industry to take, how do we even know what is feasible, and what is imagination running rampant onto paper? Well we know this for sure…times are definitely changing, and those changes affect us all in one way or another. The most likely adaptation the motorcycle community will see in the near future is hybrid bikes. The concept of an electric bike may not be your cup of tea (or bottle of beer as it may be), but it is none the less, part of our future. As we look at hybrids today, many of the electric cars actually get better gas mileage than your two-wheeler. Pretty crazy to imagine, but true. There are positives and negatives to the idea of hybridization of motorcycles. The internal combustion engine has been around for more than 100 years, and we have done pretty much everything to perfect its original design. Bringing up the old adage, “If it ain’t broke…” Also, oil companies really don’t want everyone plugging in versus filling up…big oil doesn’t know how to be poor, nor do they want to be! Also, your bike makes noise….good noise…noise that makes the cage drivers pay attention when you’re out on the road. Hybrids are clean, therefore good for our planet that we are slowly destroying. Electric engines have total linear power March 2016

Nashville bike week’s
10 most asked questions • Is Nashville Bike Week actually going to happen? Yes, our lease is signed, we have booked bands, we have sold a massive amount of tickets, and at this rate will sell out in early 2017 with over 100,000 in attendance. We also have a 4 year renewal option with Loretta Lynn Ranch. Nashville Bike Week is here to stay!
• Why are you charging for tickets? It has been proven in Nashville that you can’t have a free event (Steel Horse Stampede). Nashville is too small of a town to pull the sponsorship needed to put on an event of this size at no charge to those who attend. NBW is a privately funded event, no tax dollars or tourism dollars are being used to put it on.
• How can you call it “Nashville Bike Week”? We call it Nashville Bike Week because Loretta Lynn Ranch is only 70 miles from downtown Nashville, the closest city. This has been done time and time again, some examples:
Nashville Super Speedway 50 miles away in Lebanon, TN Music City Raceway 20 miles away in Ridge Top, TN Cincinnati Airport which is in Hebron, KY
• Why are you having it at Loretta Lynn Ranch? First off, why not? LLR is a beautiful and spacious place with room for 100,000 bikers. It is also private property. We could not have bikers camping at the Nashville Fairgrounds for 10 days. That just flat out would not work. Not to mention by having it on private property, we play by a different set of rules.
• What about Nashville Bike Week 2016? There is an insane amount of planning and logistics that go into putting on an event of this magnitude. We don’t want 100k people showing up to a big ol’ cluster. We have set 2017 as our first year to make sure it is unforgettable. After 2017, it will be annual, so adjust your calendars for 2018 and so on...

Nashville bike week’s
10 most asked questions • So you charge for a ticket... What does that get me? Primitive camping is included with our tickets as are all the bands, events, comedians, and stunt shows. This is no flea market or swap meet. We will have the top part manfacturers and motorcycle companies with their big rig displays showing off the latest products and building/customizing bikes on the spot.
• Can I bring my RV? There are several RV parking options available. Water, electric, and sewage are available as well. These start at $500 and are good for the entire 10 days. 1 ticket per person also required on top of RV pass.
• What bands are playing? As of now we have about 50 bands that will be our opening acts. Some are biker bands, some are local country bands on the rise as well as rock bands from across the country. This is Nashville afterall!!!
• What is there to do? Why is it called an “experience”? Of course at the main event (Loretta Lynn Ranch) we will have our bands, stunt shows, comedy shows zip lines, biker games, fireworks shows, an air show, and more. We will also have a daily schedule that shows all the rides that day. They range from the Mississippi River to the Appalachians and back. It is truly a statewide event. There are more options than time, so you will be busy! NBW is designed with the TRUE rider in mind, ride and see things during the day, party with friends at the ranch at night.
• How do we get tickets? We currently have our Early Bird tickets on sale for only $150. That’s a $200 discount off the regular price of $350. We will announce our first headline band in April - at that time the 10 day tickets will go to $350. We will begin selling daily passes between $55-$85 depending on the band that day. You can purchase tickets from our website at: www.nashvillebikeweek.com

Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks
Zion National Park is located in Utah on UT 9, 163 miles north of Las Vegas. The park was named by the Mormons and is famous for its massive colorful sandstone cliffs in cream, pink, and red. If you are lucky, you can watch the expert climbers traversing the sheer cliff walls. One of the most visited areas of the park is The Narrows, where a stream only 22-30 feet wide runs between 1,000 feet cliffs. In addition, there are 69 species of animals, 208 of birds, 29 of reptiles, 6 of amphibians, and 9 of fish. Several species, including the peregrine falcon, California condor, and the Mexican spotted owl, are endangered. You may even spot mountain lions and desert bighorn sheep. The serene park has numerous hiking trails and is accessible by free shuttles, at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center and in Springdale, from March through October, if you want to park and ride. Parking fills quickly in the park, so parking in Springdale is the best bet. Bryce Canyon is located on UT 63 north of Zion, approximately 270 miles north of Las Vegas. It was named for the Mormon pioneer, Ebenezer Bryce. This is one of my favorite parks owing to the world’s largest collection of “hoodoos” A “hoodoo” is spectacular, many hued rock formation, eroded by the freezing and thawing of acid rain, forming a dozen limestone amphitheaters at least 1,000 feet high. The term “hoodoo” was coined by early geologists, who thought the formations would cast a spell on visitors. Maybe so, but the shape and varied coloration of each spire is spellbinding, to say the least. The extremely pure air allows a view of three states for 200 miles! Ask a ranger about a Ponderosa Pine at one of the numerous scenic pull-offs, where women and men smell different odors in the bark. Surprisingly, women smell vanilla and men smell chocolate. Simply put, this is one of the most magnificently beautiful places on earth. If you happen to be over 62, a senior lifetime pass to all National Parks, for two, costs only $10. One of the few advantages of getting older! Ride safe and Have Fun!! Cooper

Lady Rider Melissa “Missy” Brown Hello, Melissa “Missy” Brown here. Supposedly the fastest growing segment of new motorcycle riders in the last few years are women. I’m one of those women. After many years as a passenger I took the plunge at the very end of 2014 and became a licensed rider. My first step was the Tennessee Basic Rider Course, then many many miles of practice. My biggest challenge was height. At 4 feet 10 inches not many motorcycles fit my frame. My first bike was a little Yamaha Virago 250 to gain confidence and experience. It did just that. A little over a month later I had outgrown the 250 and moved on to a Shadow Phantom 750. A few months on the Honda I was ready for my dream bike and my current ride, a 2015 Indian Scout. In 2015 I put a little over 6,000 miles on two wheels. This last year I experienced riding down the streets of Sturgis and Daytona. The beauty of the South as well as South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming. The Metro Police Toy Ride through downtown Nashville was an awesome and memorable experience for me. The National Indian Ride to Lynchburg was a chance for me to show off my bike as well as my abilities to other Indian riders. I have been blessed to meet some incredible bikers and some inspirational women riders. I cannot begin to put into words the thrill of being able to ride next to my husband and experience the beauty of this country on two wheels with him. Riding my own bike has strengthened our bond as now I am more engaged in something we both love. Riding has brought us so many great friends into our life. So don’t be a stranger! We can often be found at bike shows, rallies, rides, or just enjoying the day on a curvy Tennessee back road. You can’t miss the Black Scout with the Female War Bonnet on the tank and “Melissa” on the rear fender. So be sure to say hi! We would love to hear YOUR story! ALL ladies are welcome and encouraged to join and contribute to our monthly Lady Rider column. Please submit your story and photos to: ThunderRoadsTn@gmail.com 14

Nashville Easyriders 2
O
n February 6, the Easyriders Bike Show Tour arrived at the Music City Center. Unlike local shows, the Easyriders event attracts builders from all over the U.S., as well as national vendors. From doors opening at 10 am until at least 12:30, the lines into the show were 15-20 minutes long, due to security, even with a ticket. The show was a huge success for having lots of great bikes, vendors, entertainment, and nationally known builders. For the ladies, Rusty Coones “Quinn” of “Sons of Anarchy” and the upcoming “American Made” posed for pictures. The guys preferred a picture surrounded by the “Purrfect Angelz”, of the Full Throttle Saloon. The Angelz even stopped by to pose at the Thunder Roads Magazine booth, as did the fabulous Geneva, who posed with the girls promoting the 2017 Nashville Bike
Week. Geneva later performed at the after party at Skully’s Saloon. Besides the Angelz’ energetic performance, the crowd was also entertained by the Fryed Brothers Band. Builders’ booths included Paul Yaffe’s Bagger Nation, John Shope’s Bagger Nation, Indian Larry Motorcycles, and Nashville’s Pan Head Phil’s Music City Motorcycles. Boswell’s was the local sponsor and well represented Harley, with a large mini-store, filled with bikes and motorclothes. One of the crowd’s favorites was the display of David Mann’s original art. Even after his death, his works are some of the best ever. Overall, for motorcycle lovers, this was a great event. This location was a cut above last year’s location in Hendersonville, although some did mention the pricy parking downtown. Let’s hope they choose to return to Nashville next year!

THUNDER ROADS® TENNESSEE is proud to announce a state-wide, summer long riding challenge hitting great destinations and events across the state..
The 2016 Tennessee Thunder Run Presented by Garza Law Firm It’s a riding contest unlike any you have ever seen, and features great prizes every month!
HOW IT WORKS
Each month, Thunder Roads® Tennessee will announce a list of Tennessee Thunder Run Presented by Garza Law Firm Ride Stops. These stops are selected based on recommendations of our readers, and confirmed by our editors. Some of the Ride Stops, will be designated Registration stops. Riders can stop by any registration stop and pick up a card, register it so we can contact winners and you are ready to go. You only have to give your contact info once when you register your card, then you can go to any ride stop location in the state and “check in” just by presenting your card at each location. Once a rider has “checked-in” at a stop – their card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads® Tennessee will also randomly select rider check-ins from across the state for special prizes and incentives. Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads® Tennessee and our sponsors and will include some very exciting prizes. They may include riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, and many others. This is a contest about riding. The beauty, and simplicity of 20
the program is that anyone can win, with any check-in, but your chances of winning increase the more you ride! The dedicated rider, crisscrossing the state has a greater chance of winning, but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the drawing for that Ride Stop, and also the state wide drawings each month. The more you ride, the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea, to encourage everyone to get out and ride!
STATE AND STOP PRIZES
Every month the Thunder Roads® Tennessee staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop, and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of April. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!

Bike of the Month
2015 CUSTOM INDIAN SCOUT
Congratulations to Melissa “Missy” Brown on winning our monthly Bike Contest on Facebook! Melissa “Missy” Brown here, a huge thank you hug to all of you who voted for my bike. “Tiger Lily” is my 2015 Indian Scout 1133. The name was suggested to me by my 8 year old niece and is a tribute to Disney’s only Indian Princess. I wanted a bike that obviously belonged to a woman but still looked beast. My Scout started out in black gloss. To make Tiger a little different I opted to have a female Indian Princess airbrushed on the tank instead of the normal Chief War Bonnet. Pamela Shanteau is a world renowned artist and she did an amazing job in my biased opinion. Mick Forrest contributed his skills by hand painting some of the Indian engine and fuel cap medallions in a fading pink scheme. The saddle was changed to a custom black leather Corbin with pink stitching. Custom machined fender trim was added to the rear fender. To clean the look, all of the factory turn signals were removed. Bar end Motogadget turn signals were added along with Mini X-Arc turn signals in the rear. Oddly enough a HarleyDavidson Daymaker LED headlight now sets in the bucket. FTD Customs in Hendersonville provided the wheels and the matching rotors. It was their first Scout but certainly not their last. Other custom touches are Jokers Pegs, Aeromach shifters and brake pegs, and a Motherwell rack. Giving me better control, this bike has Indian’s reduced reach bar and pedals as I am 4 foot 10 inches tall. For performance a Hacker Exhaust and a Power Commander V Module were added. To date this Scout has pegged a 94.6 max HP rating to the rear wheel while, according to corporate specs, weighs 538 pounds. Tiger has taken first place trophies in Bike Shows at Kentucky Bike, Hawg Valley, and Thunder Road Sturgis. I’m really proud of this bike and I love riding, talking, and showing Tiger Lily off. Special thanks to: Indian of Murfreesboro. Generation after generation of Sloan’s who completely understand customer service. If you have a cool custom bike you would like to have featured in our magazine, enter it in our monthly contest by submitting a pic of your bike to ThunderRoadsTn@gmail.com

LUCK OF THE IRISH HEARTY STEW
1-1/2 to 2 lbs. of Boneless Sirloin Steak Meat; cut into bite-size pieces 2 Tbls. of All Purpose Flour 2 -3 Tbls. butter or margarine 1 Large Yellow Onion; chopped in big chunks 1 Can of Beef Stock and 1 Carton or Box of Beef Stock 1 Can of Stewed Tomatoes; un-drained 1 Envelope of Good Seasons Garlic & Herb Dressing Mix 1 lb. of red potatoes, jackets left on, cut into 3/4 inch chunks 2 Handfuls of pre-packaged baby carrots 1 Cup of Frozen Peas 1 Cup of either Frozen Corn or Frozen Broccoli, or both 2 Tbls. Worcestershire Sauce 1/2 Palm-full of Thyme 2 Tbls. Pearl Barley (in spice aisle any grocery) 1 Heaping Tbls. of Parsley 1 Bay Leaf 4 Beef Boullion Cubes; dissolved in 1 cup hot water Melt 1/4 stick of butter or 2 tablespoons of margarine over medium heat. Dredge your meat chunks thoroughly through flour and then dredge again. Place into melted butter in a Dutch Oven and let brown up good on all sides. Remove to side plate. Now, on medium-high heat, sprinkle apprx. 3 heaping tablespoons of all-purpose flour into same pot. Keep working it around and around for about a minute or so to cook off the flour taste. Next, add your dissolved beef boullion cubes hot water mixture and again, let it all get mixed in well. Keep that wooden spoon moving! Next, add the (1) can of beef stock and keep an eye on it as it will thicken up quickly. Turn heat down to medium-low. Add the box of beef stock now. Add back in the beef chunks, potatoes, tomatoes, dressing mix, onion chunks, Worcestershire, thyme, barley, parsley and bay leaf. Cook covered for 45 minutes. The last 15 minutes, remove bay leaf and if needed, if stock too thick, add 1 cup of hot water. This will dilute the beef flavor so only add it if truly necessary. Now add in all your frozen veggies and a large pat of butter or 1 Tbl. of margarine, whichever. Take cover off and let go until frozen carrots are tender throughout. Serve in big soup bowls along with a cold apple/walnut & pear salad mixed in creamed mayonnaise and chopped Romaine lettuce. Serve hot crusty bread and take some room temp. margarine or butter and throw in a palm-full of basil and spread on thick slices of hot bread. Aye! Now this Irish Stew truly is magically delicious!

Bullet Points SHOTGUNS FOR HOME DEFENSE We’ve probably all heard at one time or another that a shotgun is “the best gun for home defense”. A shotgun IS a great home defense weapon, not necessarily your Grampa’s old rabbit gun, but a proper fighting shotgun. Combat Shotguns usually have barrels shorter than 20 inches and hold more than 5 rounds. There are also a lot of myths about shotguns. We will try to dispel two of the biggest myths. Myth 1. “All you have to do is rack the slide of a shotgun and the bad guys go running”. The first problem with this is if you are close enough for a bad guy to hear you rack the slide, you have already walked into a potentially bad situation with an unloaded gun. The next problem is, does the person that just invaded your house know what that sound is? When I was a kid, most people I knew had experienced a pump shotgun before we were finished with single digit birthdays. Nowadays, they aren’t as popular as they once were, especially with the nefarious crowd so the bad guy on the other side of your door may have never actually heard a pump shotgun cycled. The other problem is, if someone invaded your home to steal for drug money, they may hear it and know what it is, but in a chemically altered state, still not care. Myth 2. “You just point it down the hallway and pull the trigger, you don’t even have to aim it”. Nothing could be further from the truth, in fact, shotguns are actually one of the hardest types of guns to shoot accurately. Some of them don’t even have sights, so you aim (yes, you must aim a shotgun to hit what you are shooting at) by looking down the barrel. This takes a lot of practice to get good at. You also can’t hold a shotgun at your hip and shoot it accurately, even if Arnold Schwarzenegger can, you still can’t. Some think the shot spread will cover a wide enough area so they don’t have to aim, there are several studies on shot spread at 21 feet. Even with the best defensive rounds, the shot spread at 21 feet (about the length of a
March 2016
hallway) can usually be covered by your opened hand. Now with that out of the way, Shotguns are hard to shoot accurately, slow to load, don’t hold many rounds at all, and they kick hard making follow-up shots more difficult. But in spite of all of these shortcomings, if you are willing to train with them they are still great home defense weapons. If you plan to use a shotgun for home defense, you should practice a lot, and not just standing and shooting at paper targets, you should shoot them from every position you can think of under all kinds of circumstances just as you should with any home defense weapon. Also there are many add-ons for shotguns, they don’t have to look like a decorated Christmas tree, but there are a few that most consider essential. A recoil reducing stock or pad. This not only makes follow-up shots faster, but makes training more enjoyable. A shell carrier, as covered before, shotguns hold very few rounds from a defensive weapon standpoint, so having more ammunition readily available and practicing reloads is vital. A sling, a shotgun is a long gun, and a sling is a good idea on any defensive long gun. A sling is a way to carry the shotgun, if your hands are busy doing something else important you won’t have to put your shotgun down, it’s no good to you or could possibly be used against you if you don’t have it with you. Not to get into defensive tactics, but examples are if you need to move something heavy as a barricade, render medical aid, or carry a loved one to safety. Most also agree a white light should be attached to any home defense gun or kept next to it. A white light on a weapon is not for looking around, and all the reasons to not have a light (they can see me coming, it gives away my position, all great reasons on a battlefield) are outweighed by the single biggest reason to have one for a home defense situation, target identification. Always be sure what you are shooting, and what’s behind it. Make sure you are not aiming at the 16 year old neighbor kid who just discovered alcohol and wandered into the wrong house.

A car load of Irish Nuns is sitting at a traffic light in downtown Dublin, when a bunch of rowdy drunks pull up alongside of them. “Hey, show us yer tittiess, ya’ bloody penguins!” shouts one of the drunks. Quite shocked, Mother Superior turns to Sister Mary Immaculata and says, “I don’t think they know who we are; show them your cross.” Sister Mary Immaculata rolls own her window and shouts, “Piss off, ya’ fookin’ little wankers, before I come over there and rip yer balls off and shove em’ in yer fookin’ filthy mouth” Sister Mary Immaculata then rolls up her window, looks back at Mother Superior, quite innocently, and asks, “Did that sound cross enough? ________________________________________ George Phillips , an elderly man from Walled Lake, Michigan, was going up to bed, when his wife told him that he’d left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window. George opened the back door to go turn off the light, but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things. He phoned the police, who asked “Is someone in your house?” He said “No, but some people are breaking into my garden shed and stealing from me.” Then the police dispatcher said “All patrols are busy, you should lock your doors and an officer will be along when one is available”. George said, “Okay.” He hung up the phone and waited 3 minutes. Then he phoned the police again. “Hello, I just called you a few minutes ago because there were people stealing things from my shed. Well, you don’t have to worry about them now because I just shot and killed them both; the dogs are eating them right now,” and he hung up. Within five minutes, six Police Cars, a SWAT Team, a Helicopter, two Fire Trucks, a Paramedic and an

It’s not a rally, it’s an experience
by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: 2016 brings us the biggest shift in the POW/MIA world in the last 25 to 30 years. As I have reported over the past two and a half years that the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Senate conducted inquiries into the performance of the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) and the Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) and came to the conclusion that these two organizations were not getting the job done. Of course those of us who have been working the POW/MIA issue for a long time, some of us since the 1960’s, already knew this. The result of the investigations was the dismantling of JPAC and DPMO and the creation of a new organization titled the Defense Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Accounting Agency (DPAA). DOD began to bring the new organization into being last year and DPAA was declared fully operational as of January, 2016. Some of you know that I am National Co-Chairman of the Board of Honor-Release-Return, Inc. (HRR) which is a national think tank and POW/MIA activist organization. We have had the honor and privilege of being one of many players who have contributed to the structure, mission and focus of this new organization over the past two and a half years. DPAA was set in motion under Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and although Secretary Hagel has moved on, DPAA is moving forward with the spirit and vision set forth by Secretary Hagel. This past fall I and my fellow Co-Chairman of the Board for HRR, Jim “Moe” Moyer, had a long and productive meeting with the Director of DPAA, Retired Lieutenant General Michael Linnington, and several of his executive staff Arlington, Virginia The meeting was scheduled for one hour and ended up lasting almost four. We found the new leadership at DPAA very motivated and making many changes that will speed the recovery and identification of America’s missing in action service members. It was truly a breath of fresh air compared to the way JPAC and DPMO were run and the relationship those two organizations had with many of the families of the missing. DPAA is integrating the latest technologies into identifying
March 2016
remains, partnering with Universities for research and recovery efforts and contracting with non-governmental organizations to raise the number of recoveries from around the world. There are over 80,000 American service members still missing in action from as far back as World War II through today. While DPAA funding by the government is nowhere near what it needs to be, DPAA is doing what it can with the resources it has to bring imaginative and creative tactics into action to find, recover and identify our missing. They are also creating a more open and responsive relationship with the families. After World War II there were thousands of servicemen on the island of Guam awaiting permanent burial. After much pressure from Congress and veterans organizations and the help of land donated by Hawaii, Congress finally approved the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in a place created by a volcano and known today as the “Punchbowl.” There have been several hundred service members buried in the punchbowl who were not able to be identified at that time. DPAA cut through the politics and is disinterring unidentified USS Oklahoma service member remains from the “Punchbowl” and beginning the long overdue process of identification and return to their families. DPAA is working to improve the process of recovering remains from all wars; WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the Gulf Wars as well as other incidents where service members went missing. The previous organizations averaged 60 to 80 identifications per year since the end of Vietnam. The leadership at DPAA is committed to raising that average substantially beginning this year. You can go to https:// service.govdelivery.com/accounts/USDOD/subscriber/ new and sign up to receive emails about identified service members and their repatriation to their family. Your POW/ MIA patches and flags make a difference. Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. Bulldog * My monthly column reflects my personal point of view and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Publishers of this magazine, but they, like me, acknowledge the sacrifices made for the privilege of Freedom of Speech, therefore, they gratefully let me rant. Thank you for reading my rants. Hope my opinions don’t offend anyone, but, we all should be grateful for the right to have free opinions.

Skully’s Saloon: There is a treasure in Old Hickory across from the Dupont Plant called Skully’s Saloon. This great neighborhood bar started life as a dirt floor feed store in the 1920’s. Through the years it has gone through a lot of ups and downs. Many of those have been bars that included Pole Cats and DILIGAF’s. This long time establishment was finally resurrected as Skully’s Saloon a few years ago and has prospered as a biker friendly community gathering place that is open from 11am serving lunch and rocking into the evening. Amanda Anderson and Bobby Smith did extensive remodeling and construction to make this place home. One of the unique things they did was make a bar with thick clear coating that has many embedded personal treasures meaningful to who they are and their customers. Amanda’s heritage is Blackfoot Indian and there is a section to honor that heritage and her mother. Other sections speak to service in the military, youthful experimentation, personal memories and stuff you would expect to see imbedded in a bar. There is a great collection of money in the bar too. You’ll find a collection of American and foreign coins, a real confederate $100 bill and other paper money. Check out all the military and patriotic flags on the ceiling. I’m sure you’ll find something there you’ve never seen before. Skully’s is a meeting place for Music City CMT Abate, Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) and they support many charities. They are a food drop off spot for the Old Hickory Outreach Center’s Food Pantry. At Christmas they helped support 206 families have a great holiday and get enough to eat. Skully’s is all about helping with fundraising and supporting good charities. Success here is more about what they do to support the community than squeezing the last penny out of your pocket. The Skully regulars are quick to support a cause that is doing good for folks who need help.
will allow. Skully’s is all about making sure that customers don’t dance with the law just because they’ve had a good time. They will make sure you get a ride home and if you are on a bike and are worried about leaving it overnight, don’t. They have a fenced area and are happy to secure your bike until you come back for it. They really work overtime to make sure you have a good time and live to tell about it. On the third Thursday of the month they have an old school bike gathering and you never know what kind of really cool stuff you’ll see. The health scores here are as good as they get and you can tell by the food. Everything is fresh and shows attention to detail. My favorite is the Philly Cheese Steak – tender slices of steak with awesome flavorful Philly sauce. The bread is crisp on the outside and works great with the meat. They serve burgers, chicken, BBQ, bologna, patty melt grilled cheese and hot dog sandwiches and subs. They also have salads, pizza, nachos, quesadillas and Skully Skins. A great time and great food any day of the week. What more could you ask for. When you stop in tell Amanda that Bulldog sent you and ask for the special bar tour. Let’s Ride to Eat!!! Bulldog If you are out riding to eat and see me please come up and tell me your favorite places to go when you’re hungry and thirsty. “Will Ride to Eat” will be an ongoing new article in Thunder Roads® Magazine TN and we want to put the spotlight on the great history and variety of Tennessee’s biker friendly establishments.
When it comes to entertainment, events and activities Skully’s really keeps the ball rolling. There is something going on most days of the week. Monday is free pool all day and Lightning Rod Karaoke, Tuesday is Blues Day with a Blues Jam at 7 and pool tournament at 8. Wednesday is Hump Day Happy Hour and Bike Night in warm months. Thursday is Writer’s night at 7 and pool tournament at8. Friday celebrates TGIF with various entertainment, Saturday is live entertainment and Sunday is Bloody Mary Day with an open Jam at 7pm. They pride themselves on being a neighborhood gathering place for the locals and roll out the red carpet for everyone who rolls in, especially those who roll in on two wheels. Amanda insures that Skully’s is a safe and welcoming place for all. Respect for women is a top priority as is making sure the place is the cleanest in town. On occasion a customer will have more fun than the road 36

THE AIM/NCOM MOTORCYCLE E-NEWS SERVICE is brought to you by Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM), and is sponsored by the Law Offices of Richard M. Lester. If you’ve been involved in any kind of accident, call us at 1-(800) ON-A-BIKE or visit www.ON-A-BIKE.com. NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) RIDING “OFF THE GRID” -- HOW TO ESCAPE GPS TRACKING ON YOUR MOTORCYCLE
Freedom of the Road isn’t that free these days. “We often talk about what you can do to protect your privacy, but more often than not we accept the technology given to us by large corporations with government influence,” writes Gil Mellen, ABATE of California’s rep to the Southern California Confederation of Clubs (SCCOC), “And with that ease our phones store more than just our private information, they are a collection source for who we are, what we do and where we go 24/7.” Turning your phone off or on airplane mode doesn’t cut it either, he explains. In order to truly be undetectable to ANYONE you must use a first line of defense on your phone, such as Silent Pocket. By employing a Silent Pocket “Faraday cage” (conductive material surrounding a piece of equipment to exclude electrostatic and electromagnetic influences) you can block all wireless signals to and from your mobile device. Once placed inside the stylish leather case, your device is completely sealed -- No GPS tracking, NO cellular, NO wifi, NO Bluetooth, and NO RFID scanning or NFC in all frequencies. Additionally, Silent Pocket cases protect your financial information from credit card skimming and scanning. So if you’re heading to a large biker event and want no one to know your whereabouts, simply put your phone inside the case and wherever you go is OFF THE GRID. Once you remove your phone, any missed voicemails, data, or messages are downloaded. Your location is also known at that point. “Silent Pocket is in the privacy accessory market for the long haul.” stated Aaron Zar, Silent Pocket Co-Founder. “As the methods hackers use to compromise security continue to evolve, so will our products.” Silent Pocket is a proud supporter of SAVE THE PATCH and they offer an exclusive 15% off discount code for all BIKERS and ABATE MEMBERS at www.silent-pocket.com: patch16 or call 831-531-8199 or e-mail sales@silent-pocket.com for bulk order discounts. BIKER ATTIRE ALLOWED IN NEW MEXICO COURTROOMS Declaring “A great victory for our community,” Annette Torrez, chair of the New Mexico Motorcycle Rights Organization 40
(NMMRO) and National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) board of directors, announced that; We received the following message from Chief Justice Judge Nash concerning motorcycle vests in District Courthouse, “Please be informed that the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department will NOT be requiring members of your organization to turn their vests inside out upon entry into the Second Judicial District Courthouse and its’ Courtrooms in the future.” The NMMRO and the NNMCOC (Northern New Mexico Confederation of Clubs) sent Judge Nash a letter regarding an issue in which Bernalillo Sheriff Officers were asking the Guardians of the Children to remove their vests and turn them inside out so none of the patches were visible. “These vests and patches are what identify them to the abused children who they are there to support in court under difficult circumstance as these children have to face their perpetrators or have to sometimes testify,” explained Torrez. “While we can all benefit from this victory, it is the abused children from our community who will benefit most, as now members of motorcycle community can continue to support and accompany them in court. Your voices were heard as we united in support.” Nash’s message specifically denotes “members of your organization” which is why “it is so important we as motorcyclists join and support the NMMRO, an organization that stands and fights for your rights, freedoms and liberties,” said Torrez, adding; “Thank you to Judge Nash for doing the right thing as we believe our 1st Amendment was being violated. We must also remember that we must be respectful at all times in our courthouse, we must be on our best behavior so that we may continue to wear our patches and motorcycle related attire in the courthouse. I want to thank the Guardians of the Children for bringing this to our attention. Thank you to Double D from The Motorcycle Profiling Project and Attorney Dan Sorey for their support and advice in addressing this issue.” MANIFESTO ON THE MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY AND FREEDOM OF THE ROAD “I read your recent (NCOM Biker Newsbytes) report and the piece about the NCOM board requesting input on motorcycle issues to discuss at the upcoming NCOM Convention,” writes Keith “Bandit” Ball of Bikernet.com and former editor of Easyriders magazine. “I have a major bitch and a project that could save the custom motorcycle aftermarket and place freedom at the forefront of our nation once more.” WHEN YOU CAN’T GIVE UP, WRITE -- A Brief Manifesto; “Sounds ominous but it’s not, then again it is a tough alteration to current government thinking. And I believe our industry could be at the forefront. Why can’t we prove that Freedom always needs to be a consideration? Why can’t we prove that all the custom motorcycles in the country will never have any significant impact on the environment and agencies need to leave us alone?

If we were successful, this could place Freedom at the forefront in many applications from hot rods, to go carts, to speed boats.”
BILL IN WASHINGTON WOULD ALLOW MOTORCYCLES ON SHOULDERS IN TRAFFIC
As evidence of governmental regulation usurping personal rights, Ball (Bandit@Bikernet.com) submitted the following news release on behalf of SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) entitled “EPA Seeks to Prohibit Conversion of Vehicles into Racecars”:
Washington State might give motorcyclists preferential treatment on some highways during traffic jams under a bill that has the support of the state Senate. The measure would give motorcyclists permission to drive on the far left shoulders of divided highways when traffic is moving under 25 miles an hour.
“The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a regulation to prohibit conversion of vehicles originally designed for on-road use into racecars and make the sale of certain products for use on such vehicles illegal. The proposed regulation was contained within a non-related proposed regulation entitled ‘Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Fuel Efficiency Standards for Mediumand Heavy-Duty Engines and Vehicles - Phase 2’.
“It really is about relieving congestion,” said State Senator Tim Sheldon (D-Mason County), the bill’s sponsor. He tried passing a bill last year that would have allowed what’s known as “lane splitting,” allowing bikers to ride between cars stopped in traffic, but that bill failed.
The regulation would impact all vehicle types, including the sports cars, sedans and hatch-backs commonly converted strictly for use at the track. While the Clean Air Act prohibits certain modifications to motor vehicles, it is clear that vehicles built or modified for racing, and not used on the streets, are not the ‘motor vehicles’ that Congress intended to regulate. ‘This proposed regulation represents overreaching by the agency, runs contrary to the law and defies decades of racing activity where EPA has acknowledged and allowed conversion of vehicles,’ said SEMA President and CEO Chris Kersting. Working with other affected organizations, including those representing legions of professional and hobbyist racers and fans, SEMA will continue to oppose the regulation through the administrative process and will seek congressional support and judicial intervention as necessary. The EPA has indicated it expects to publish final regulations by July 2016.”
March 2016
Sen. Sheldon told CBS King5 News in Olympia that his proposal would alleviate traffic and make highways safer for motorcycle riders in heavy traffic. ”When congestion basically stops traffic, a motorcyclist… they’re vulnerable to over-heating as well as being rear-ended.” TEENAGER CAUTIONED AFTER SERIOUSLY INJURING MOTORCYCLIST A 14-year-old boy was recently “cautioned” by police after causing “life-changing injuries” to a motorcyclist by tying a rope between two trees on a woodland path. The 17-year-old rider was rushed to the hospital with serious neck and wind-pipe injuries after hitting the rope while riding in woods near St Neots, Cambridgeshire, UK, and he spent seven weeks in the hospital including two-and-a-half in an induced coma. The boy, who admitted responsibility under questioning by police, was issued a youth caution for causing grievous bodily harm without intent. He must also attend sessions with the Youth Offending Service.
