History of Motorcycles Part 3

In the earliest days of motorcycle production the biggest players in the industry remained the bicycle manufacturers. They began adapting their designs to accommodate the up and coming internal combustion engine. As engines became more powerful and designs began to outgrow their bicycle origins, the number of motorcycle producers increased. With so many people trying to succeed in the motorcycle industry, many of the 19th century inventors inevitably moved from motorcycle development to automobiles. Survival of the fittest at its finest, and at the turn of the century the first major mass production firms were established. 1894 marked the year of the first production motorcycle in Germany. Hildebrand and Wolfmüller developed the “Motorrad”. They even patented the Motorrad engine, a revolutionary 1488 cc model, but only a few hundred bikes were ever completed. At the same time the term “motorcycle” was first used in the English language when it appeared in materials promoting machines developed by E J Pennington. Sadly, Pennington’s designs never progressed past the prototype stage. In 1896 The Excelsior Motor Company began selling motorcycles to the public in Coventry, England. (Excelsior would also operate a company in the U.S. from 1905 – 1931) 1898 presented us with a U.S. development in the industry, when the OrientAster was built by Charles Metz at his factory in Waltham, Massachusetts. At this point in the game, many names that have become household standards began to emerge. The first familiar name in motorcycles appeared out of the bicycle era in 1898…Triumph. Triumph extended its production focus to include the motorcycle, and by 1902 had successfully produced its first model for sale. The first Triumph was essentially a bicycle fitted with a Belgian built engine that boasted a whopping 2.2 HP, and a short year later Triumph had emerged as the largest producer of motorcycles boasting an annual production of over 500 units. Clearly not considered “mass production” by today’s standards, but in 1902?? Triumph was kicking some serious ass in the motorcycle revolution. By 1907 Triumph had perfected a new 450 cc 3.5 HP engine and was producing 1,000 units annually. 1901 was the birth year for the famed Indian Motorcycle Manufacturing Company. The love child of two former bicycle racers, Indian quickly became (and has remained) a beloved name in motorcycles. Their first design was the “diamond framed” Indian Single. Its engine was built by the Aurora Firm in Illinois per Indian’s specifications. The Single was made available in one color…Deep Blue. Indian also increased its production 4

to over 500 bikes by the close of 1902, making Indian a strong competitor for Triumph. Along the way, Indian pushed the evolution of the motorcycle in several ways…in 1902 Indian produced the first chain driven bike sold to the public, as well as released the first American V-Twin in 1906 (which remains the most popular motorcycle engine today). 1907 brought the first police unit to NYC (Indian bikes were chosen by all), and by 1914 Indian had created the “loop frame” positioned gas tank, swing arm and leaf spring suspension, and the world’s first electric lights and starter. No more need for a flashlight, or parking your bike at dusk…diehards could now ride all damn night! Indian would continue to rise in the production game as well, up to 32,000 units per year (its best ever) in 1913. 1901 also brought an eager young man by the name of William S. Harley into the biking world. At the age of 21 he completed his first blueprint of a bicycle engine. In 1903, William and his partner Arthur Davidson produced their first motorcycle in their meager 10 by 15 foot factory. Henry Meyer of Milwaukee bought the original 1903 model directly from the founders…Meyer obviously had no idea what a lucky bastard he was! In 1904 the first Harley dealership was opened in Chicago, Illinois by C. H. Lang, where one of the first production models was sold. In 1907, Harley becomes a corporation and builds a new, larger factory. In 1908, the first HD motorcycle is delivered to the Detroit Michigan PD for Detroit’s first motorcycle patrol unit. The following year, for the first time ever, spare parts for the HD V-twin were made available for sale…makes me wonder what the hell you did before that if your bike broke down?? By 1914 Harley had introduced the world to the renowned bar and shield logo, begun production of the “F-Head”, and brought us sidecars…the beginning of the tag-along rider (insert apology here). By this time, mass production was in full swing, and competition was in full force. Experimentation and innovation were taking over and being further driven by the growing sport of motorcycle racing. A powerful incentive to produce tougher, faster, more reliable machines was on the rise. While initiated for the racing world, these enhancements were to quickly infiltrate the public’s machines as well. Remember that mention of the U.S. Excelsior Motor Company? Well those cats can be thanked for being a huge driving force behind why that bad ass bike parked in your driveway does more for you than just take you from point A to point B. We will delve into our need for speed next time… Melanie Schwarte

“THE MAN THING”

The Male Gender is going through one of the worst crises today since the beginning of time. Television shows make fathers out to be idiots & fools. Movies make men out to be mad dog killers. So many of us males were raised by single mothers, abusive fathers, bad stepdads, many stepdads and some were raised by several women. We are so used to report cards at every level of our life and most are graded by women: mothers, sisters, girlfriends, and wives. I was raised by a single mom and she did the best she could, but God placed a male & a female in the home to raise the children, there are some things the best mom in the world is just not equipped with to teach the son. Males go through several changes in life that can be devastating without proper guidance. His 1st change is from an infant into a boy where he once drew mommy a picture to hang on the refrigerator, he then goes to school and gets beat up because he shows everybody the picture he drew his mommy and is made fun of. The 2nd change is when he goes from boyhood to the teen years where he learns about life from the bathroom walls and he wonders if he is enough. The 3rd change is from the teen years into a young man where he thinks he knows it all by now. The 4th change is from a young man into manhood where his major concerns are “Performance, Power, and Points.” His 5th change is from manhood into an older man where his concerns are now “am I still enough.” The one thing about any man, he does not like “Changes,” just change his sock drawer out and see. When men can’t handle changes, they first just shut up, then they shut down, lastly they just quit, that’s why men can love you and leave you at the same time. They’ll take the trash out and keep going. Gen.2:18 “And the Lord God said, it is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a help meet for him.” God intended for the woman to complete the man, not to compete with the man. When a man & woman become married they two become one, when he wins, she wins. The big problem with marriages today, there is too much competition between the man & wife. I know you women can “bring home the bacon and fry it up in the pan”, and woman I can hear you roar! All that sounds great when you’re 24, but it gets lonely at 44 when it’s just you and May 2015

your cat. The bible says that “one can put 1000 to flight but two can put 10,000 to flight”. When a husband & wife are in one accord, they are 10,000 times more powerful than before. Some Christian wives have a bad habit of trying to be their husbands “Holy Spirit,” by beating them up with the Bible. When women take over the job of the Holy Spirit it only creates bitterness, and without her knowing it she turns her concerns into self-righteousness, resentment, and discontentment. Because females are emotional, they think that communication is the same thing as confrontation. Communication can’t be in a monologue where one just vents on the other, that’s domination not communication. Sometimes women ask the big question that all men hate; “Can We Talk?” Men don’t want to talk because they think it will be a confrontational. A male’s first image of God will be his natural father, that’s why some men don’t trust God. Maybe some of us were not taught how to be a man, but we are without excuse when God’s Word is readily available to teach us what we missed at an early age. Real men have character and integrity. The Church is in need of “A Few Good Men.” Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

MAMA’S SPICY BUFFALO FRIED OYSTERS 1 Dozen Oysters - Fresh or the kind in tub at the grocery. But you MUST smell them and they should smell like the ocean and nothing else. If cooking for a party or even another couple, you’ll need more than a dozen. Double or triple recipe, accordingly. 1/2 Cup of Buttermilk 1/2 Cup of Cornmeal 1/2 Cup of All-Purpose Flour Pinch of Cayenne Canola or Peanut Oil for frying 1/4 Cup of your fave Hot Sauce (more if you want) 1/4 Stick of Real Butter; salted preferably 1/2 Cup of Crumbled Bleu’ Cheese (in a tub in most larger grocery stores; in refrigerated cheese section 2 Tbls. of Chopped Chives In a bowl big enough to accommodate the amount of oysters you’re making, submerge oysters totally and let soak for one hour, stirring gently a few times. Preheat your oil in a large pot until you put the end of a wooden spoon in and little bubbles pop up and surround the handle. It’s ready for frying! In a shallow pan, combine cornmeal, flour, cayenne and salt & pepper to taste. Remove oysters from buttermilk, dredge each oyster through the cornmeal mixture and keep flipping it to cover thoroughly. Coat them all at one time and place on a separate platter. With tongs or a slotted spoon, gently lower an oyster, one at a time into hot oil. Do not overload the pan. Fry until golden brown all the way around. Remove to paper towel lined platter. If you have more than one batch to fry, place in an oven set on 200 degrees to keep hot until done frying all oysters. In a medium glass or ceramic bowl, combine hot sauce and melted butter. Toss fried oysters in hot sauce mix & again, coat thoroughly. Remove back to rinsed off platter, top with crumbled Bleu’ cheese and chopped chives. Serve immediately while piping hot. I always make up extra hot sauce & melted butter as an extra dipping sauce. These babies rock the house! Whether you’re making a dozen or 3 dozen. * Tip Of The Month: When frying bacon, always cut your bacon in half; width wise, right in the middle. Easier to work with. And, lay out your back on a stone cold skillet and then place on the stove. This stops ends from curling and cooks more evenly.

8

MOTHER’S PROPER FRESH PEA SALAD 1 Bag of Fresh, Flash Frozen Peas; quality brand 1 Tub of Philadelphia Whipped Cream Cheese (not the old-fashioned block style. The new whipped kind is fabulous for cooking!) 1 Half a Pound of Bacon (sliced in half as in the * Tip of the Month), fry crisp and then chop up into chunky, medium pieces. 1 Medium sized sweet Vidalia onion; chop up into small chunks Pour your bag of fresh, frozen peas into a medium sized glass bowl. Fry up bacon crisp, let drain on paper towel. Pour off half the fat and the rest, saute’up the onions. Use a slotted spoon and just add those directly into bowl with peas, along with bacon and Whipped Philly. Salt & Pepper to taste and I always add Parsley to everything. This is such a totally fresh side dish! I make up a batch all the time and then just snack on it or spread it on buttery crackers. Fab! MOMMA HOW YA’ ROLL THEM FRIED ICE CREAM BALLS? I worked at Chi-Chi’s Mexican Restaurant in my early 20’s for several years and the 1st week there learned the secret to this famous recipe. 1 Gallon of Premium Vanilla Ice Cream 3 Cups of Crushed Frosted Flakes 1 Tbl. of Cinnamon 1/4 Cup of Sugar or Splenda 2 Egg Whites Canola Oil for Frying Whipped Cream, Chocolate Sauce &/or Honey On a parchment lined cookie sheet, scoop out big, full, rounded ice cream scoops. Place in the freezer to get good and hard for an hour. In a baking dish combine the cornflakes, sugar & cinnamon. In a separate dish, beat up egg whites until frothy. Roll each ice cream ball in egg white mix and then in cornflake mix; coating extremely thoroughly. Place back on cookie sheet and freeze for additional 2 hours. Get a medium-sized skillet and fill 3/4 inches full of Canola oil; apprx. 375 degrees. Place one ice cream ball at a time on slotted spoon or spider until golden brown. They fry up fast! Blot on paper towel and serve up with melted chocolate sauce & whipped cream, or drizzled honey & whip cream too! Oh, baby, these are SO addictive and totally hit the spot! HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY all you phenom Moms or fab “Stay At Home Mr. Mom’s”. God Bless!

Lady Rider

Kelly Yates

I started riding when I was ten years old when my Dad bought me a Honda 150 that had to be kick started. I stopped riding after buying my first car when I was sixteen, so my Dad sold the bike. Many years had passed, I got married and moved many times. It wasn’t until my husband and I moved to Florida in 2003 where we attended our first Bike Week event in Daytona Beach. Well that pretty much did it, we got the fever for a bike and began looking. I wanted a Fatboy and it wasn’t long after seeing one on the front cover of Cycle Trader that a call was made and a road trip down to Miami in hopes this would be our first bike we would ride together. It was a beauty sitting dead center in the middle of the owners’ garage looking stout and shinning. It was eye candy alright, but it wasn’t until the owner fired it up that we were sold. Wow, does it talk! Needless to say we took it home about a week later where it began its transformation of what was, to what is. It needed more chrome, a different seat and a few changes to suite my husband’s style. We rode together for three years until I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in January 2007. After months of surgeries, treatments and trips back and forth for doctor visits, we found ourselves watching a lot of TV programs and some of those were Bike shows pertaining to building your own bike. I said to my husband, “I would like to build my own bike.” That’s where the actual story begins. Christmas of 2007 my husband bought me a softail rolling chassis and a seat. It was a Christmas gift of all gifts and the build soon began, only we weren’t the builders as we had no tools, machines or knowledge of how to build a bike, but we knew who could and off to Scooters Performance it went. I began buying all the parts needed to start the build and I wanted Old School, a Bobber but stretched giving it an 10

elongated look with a fat rear tire and a real working kicker. My husband just shook his head on the kicker. He said, “I didn’t need one as my motor was too big and I wouldn’t be able to kick it myself without being sent to the moon.” Well, my response to that was, “if I don’t get a kicker I don’t want it.” I got the kicker! Other than that, no frills except for some chrome and a little personalization with gratitude, a thankful heart and honoring our Lord. You see, if it weren’t for our Lord healing me of cancer in the Fall of 2007 this bike would not have been finished and I can honestly say, I would not be here today to tell this story. It took almost two years to complete my build, many paychecks buying parts, and many visits overseeing and getting fitted, a couple of trips to Jacksonville Florida to have my tins painted along with a design I had added to the rear fender to honor our Lord. It was finally completed in October of 2009, just in time for Biketoberfest and its first bike show. It was beautiful! I took home my first trophy and was thrilled beyond belief. My bike had won a few more shows in Florida before we made the move to Tennessee in February 2013. I entered my first show in Columbia TN this last year and brought home another award. I must admit, I haven’t ridden it as much since our move due to the cold winters and not knowing how far I can go since I have a small tank and gas stations are needed often, but that’s where ol’ blue our Fatboy comes in. If I want to ride distance, I just hop on our Fatboy and take it all in. There’s nothing like riding your own bike and I thank God, my husband and my Dad. One got me started, one made a dream come true and the most important one of all is God. He gives me life to enjoy the ride wherever the road leads me.

Ladies of H-D Cool Springs Event Model Search Harley-Davidson of Cool Springs held their Rally in the Alley Bike Night a few weeks ago at Loser’s Most Wanted Bar and Grill in Franklin, but this wasn’t a normal bike night. Betsy, LaVonda, and the gang at HDCS throw a great bike night, but this bike night included the “Ladies of H-D Cool Springs Event Model Search”. That’s right, H-D of Cool Springs is looking for 6 lucky Ladies to represent the Dealership at events and in advertising. It all started with a Facebook post, to enter the contest, the ladies had to submit photos and a Bio to the event Facebook page. From the entries received there, 20 were chosen to move on to the next round. The 20 lucky contestants were notified to come to Rally in the Alley for round 2. The beautiful ladies got up on stage and strutted their stuff for the crowd, introduced themselves, and answered a few questions before a panel of four judges. The girls mingled with

12

the crowd, and some even showed their Hula-Hoop skills. There were vendors on hand to show their products and some gave away prizes, and speaking of HulaHoop Skillz, the music was provided by Phoenix Rising. Besides being a great band, if you’ve ever caught their show, you know Amy Brown, the groups lead singer, has some MADD HULA -HOOP SKILLZ, at one point during the evening, she was quite literally a “Girl on Fire”. After the judges made their decision, 10 Finalist were chosen, with one of them appearing in the ad on the back cover of this issue of Thunder Roads Tennessee. The 10 finalist will be back at Loser’s Most Wanted on Thursday May 7th for the Swimsuit Finale! That night, 6 lucky Ladies will receive the title “LADY OF H-D COOL SPRINGS”! We would like to thank our friend Tony Luna, for taking some amazing photos at this event!

Mule Day Event 2015!

By: Rebel Ron The city of Columbia, Tenn. has really grown the last couple of decades, mostly because of Saturn/GM auto factory built in nearby Springhill. Even though this small town of 40,000 people move forward in all aspects of life they still hold onto old traditions too. There is a 170 year old festival that takes place in the town for 4 days every April known as Mule Day and it turns the small town into a city of 200,000 people! Actually it was called Breeders Day from 1840 to 1934 when the city expanded the festival and added a parade through town and much more to honor the hard headed and hardworking mule.

April 11 was the date of the Mule Day parade this year and S & G Custom Cycles held its annual Customer Appreciation Day on the parade date which they have done for 35 years. The old skool bike shop served a “redneck breakfast” at 9:00am that consisted of a Pabst Blue Ribbon beer and a BBQ sandwich with fixings while listening to live music. Entertaining this year was “The Low Tech Rednecks” band that played some great tunes old and new. Also performing magic tricks and various illusions was Big Daddy Cool who also brought along a stunt lady, Crystal Starr, who performed belly dancing with a sword and a grinder routine where she used a grinder to shoots sparks from her metal bikini.

16

There were lots to see and fellow bikers to talk to around the huge 30,000 square foot bike shop that is filled with vintage bikes and much more. The S & G crew usually wind up their event at 1:00pm so we can all go take part in numerous other parties going on around town. We rode to Wayside Inn, Rebel Grill, Neon Moon, and Legends Steak House enjoying live music, food, and laughs at each place. It was a beautiful day and lots of people were taking advantage of the weather to get out on the bikes and have fun. Thousands of people enjoy the huge parade that moved through the town at 11:00am that has mule powered wagons, custom cars, pretty ladies, politicians, zombies, and more. Yards sales were everywhere, live music all around, lots of food, numerous competitions for the mules and much more were held at the city park. It’s a big deal and there is a lot to entertain you at this decades old event. Come check it out next year but learn how to get around the road blocks and don’t wear your good shoes because there is lots of evidence that hundreds of mules, horses, and donkeys had been there! :) So come to Mule Day and show your ass!!!!!! Y’all ride safe in 2015 and keep the rubber side down.

Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: There are some significant events this month associated with honoring service and sacrifice in defense of the freedom of our nation. These give us an opportunity to ride motorcycles with patriotic flags flying high. Armed Forced Day is Saturday, May 16, 2015. It is a day to pay tribute to men and women who serve in the United States armed forces. If you see or know someone who is in service please take a moment to thank them for serving. It is also a great day to fly the American flag and the service flag of your choice. My personal preference is the U.S. Army flag but I owe much of how I think, who I am and what I do to this great institution of higher learning. That’s just me. Those who serve or served in the Navy, Marines, Air Force or Coast Guard carry an inner pride in their service just as I and those who served in the Army do. I have to tell you, it is always touching when someone gives us a thank you for the sacrifices we have made. Memorial Day is Monday, May 25, 2015. Memorial Day is the day we honor and pay tribute to everyone who died fighting for our country. I have several good friends, many I knew and worked with and others I knew of that I pay special honors to on this most important day. They are the ones I ride for because they can’t. It is also a day that I thank God I’m an American and that many have been willing to put their lives on the line to preserve the freedoms we have in this country. Please don’t take that to mean we still have the freedoms we used to have because we don’t but we still have more freedoms that most countries and many men and women with courageous hearts went to battle with enemies who have tried to take those freedoms and enslave us. Many of them gave their life to preserve self-determination and the freedom to decide how you want to live your life. Those who enter service take an oath to protect our country from enemies both foreign and domestic. In a few years I will have lived seven decades as an American citizen. In my life I have never seen the threat to our way of life so large and clear as it is today. I don’t know if I will again be put in a position to participate in May 2015

protecting our country from our enemies but I fail to see how my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will not face that option at some point in their life. I only hope they will rise to the challenge when faced with the choice of fighting for liberty and accepting the risk of death. For those who value freedom, that day will come. We can lessen the chance if we come together as a nation and stop allowing so called leaders to pit us against each other with a “divide and conquer” strategy aimed at keeping them in power and us in check. Another event that will take place over the Memorial Day weekend is “Chrisapolooza.” This is a reunion event in Lafayette, Tennessee for soldiers of the 4th Brigade, 10th Mountain Division. The reunion honors Sgt. Christopher Scott Readling who served with distinction as a sniper in the unit. He was wounded in combat and returned home. He was rehabilitating when complications from his injuries took his life in January of this year. His mother, Dana Jones, told me the reunion is to give soldiers from 10th mountain a chance to be together away from the military and have some light hearted fun together. Christopher has been honored by the Army Sniper Association and the Wounded War Heroes organization. If you are in Lafayette over Memorial Day weekend and you see some of these guys please let them know how much you appreciate what they are doing and have done for our country. As we honor those who rest in known locations please also remember there are approximately 83,000 American service members who remain missing in action since World War II. That includes every major combat action and many small actions since that war. There are still live Americans being held captive and being used as bargaining chips by many of our enemies around the world. No matter what recognition our nation has granted a country, if they still hold a live American or are refusing to repatriate remains – they are still our enemy. Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those can’t. Bulldog * My monthly column reflects my personal point of view and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Publishers of this magazine, but they, like me, acknowledge the sacrifices made for the privilege of Freedom of Speech, therefore, they gratefully let me rant. Thank you for reading my rants. Hope my opinions don’t offend anyone, but, we all should be grateful for the right to have free opinions.

Daytona BIKE WEEK 2015 As told by The Iron Cowboy HIS SPRING brought the 74th installment of what is billed as the World’s Largest Motorcycle Event - Daytona Bike Week. While that may certainly be subject to debate, Daytona is unquestionably one of the most celebrated motorcycle events of the year world-wide. After record low temperatures and one of the worst winters in recent memory, Daytona Bike Week also represents a cure for cabin fever as much as anything to those of us in colder climates. Each of the “Big 3” historic rallies – Sturgis, Daytona, and Laconia represent something different. Sturgis is a celebration of riding, spanning at least 3 states and hundreds of miles. Laconia is about old school traditions. Daytona – well, it’s about speed and blending tradition with cutting edge. Traditionally, my first stop is at the Daytona Speedway. Being in the industry, this is where I end up talking to a lot of folks and seeing what’s new in terms of gear and bikes. You can find just about anything relating to motorcycles on display in the wide expanse surrounding the track. Virtually every major motorcycle manufacturer hosts demo rides from the Speedway, allowing enthusiasts to sample just about every modern motorcycle available in North America. A wide selection of vendors offer everything from helmets to leather, from insurance to motorized bicycles. All the big boys were out in force with plenty of toys. Harley had an incredible pavilion which certainly dominated the area. They had the entire line of bikes on display – including plenty of “custom” machines and seldom seen editions. They had a huge fleet of demo bikes on hand as well, allowing riders to capture some wind on the brand new 2015’s. Directly across from the Harley pavilion was the Indian set up, which although smaller – certainly had plenty of cool stuff going on there. We found demos running as well as some cool interactive displays that allowed for pictures to be taken of the new bikes. For those of you scoring at home, it also seemed the consensus was that the Indian pavilion had the sharpest looking staff – dressed in the same retro / pin-up style that we saw over the winter at the International Motorcycle Shows. Victory must have had the most exciting booth though, with several aggressive new bikes and a pair of talented riders putting a set of essentially stock Victory Gunners through the paces. The smell of burnt rubber filled the air as the bikes were pushed to the limits and crisscrossed on their back tires. Honda, Suzuki, Can-Am, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Kawasaki, and even the seldom seen at such events - Moto Guzzi had pavilions and demo areas where you jump on a bike and see the newest

models available. A new manufacturer and first time exhibitor at Daytona was MOTOPED. (motoped-choose-your-adventure.com) MOTOPED builds motorcycle / bicycle hybrids that offer the best of both worlds. They are lightweight, fuel efficient motorcycles that also allow the rider to pedal easily. There were several models on display, starting with the basic Cruzer. It looks more like an old school board-track racer than a bicycle, but can easily be pedaled. It has a cool rugged look accented by a brushed stainless steel tank, billet aluminum, brass accents, and genuine wood fenders. It weighs 128 lbs. and sports a 49cc engine that will allow you to cover as much as 150 miles on a single tank of gas! MOTOPED also had a completely over the top Black-Ops Edition Survival Bike on display. The Survival Bike included the following list of standard accessories: • A Lot of Knives • Lights All Over the Place • Super-Gnarly Hatchet • The Shovel you’ll inevitably need After Using Said Hatchet • Climbing Rope • Wicked-Mean Crossbow • Phone/GPS Mount • Multiple Karabiners That was the first time I’d ever seen a crossbow come standard on a motorcycle. The difficult thing was getting Cheyenne to put it back down after she posed with the bike. Our next stop was Destination Daytona. Located right off I95 at the US 1 Exit, it is a commercial celebration of riding wrapped around Bruce Rossmeyer’s Harley-Davidson. The dealership itself is a monster, resembling an airport terminal more than your average Harley shop. Adjacent to the dealership is J&P Cycles and a wide selection of shops including Coastal Moto, Ultimate Seats, and one of our favorites – Asylum Tattoo! Just down the street from Destination along US 1, is the party strip featuring The Iron Horse, Beaver Bar, and Broken Spoke. These are the big dog party destinations, each offering a full range of entertainment from mechanical bulls to touring national performers. Flanking these are an assortment of random smaller bars, vendor lots, and campgrounds. A lot of the names seem familiar as the folks from Main Street lay claim to these expanses in order to take another crack at the wallets of rally riders. The Iron Horse and Broken Spoke are world renown and aren’t to be missed. The Iron Horse with its multi-level decking and

continuous line-up of entertainment is a sight to see for sure. Just down the street, the Broken Spoke boasts an incredible stage amongst the trees – again, a sight to be seen. The Beaver Bar is a relative new-comer to the strip, but has already established itself as name to be reckoned with multiple locations – including a monster bar out in Sturgis. In Daytona they are known for $2 beers and a laid back, comfortable atmosphere. Main Street Daytona is home to the infamous Boot Hill Saloon across from the cemetery. Beyond that, the monster party bars all seem interchangeable. Froggy’s, Main Street Station, Dirty Harry’s, and the Full Moon Saloon all boast big stages, scantily clad bartenders, and non-stop craziness. Main Street itself is really the center of all the action, as a constant stream of motorcycles parade down the street. This year’s rally was undeniably smaller than years past, and it really first hit me on Main Street. While normally cars are restricted to only early morning– this year it seemed as though they were always there. The police only limit the cars when things get really crowded. Thus it was a constant reminder of it being slower, each time you saw a car come down the street during the party hours. The consensus amongst riders seemed to be that most were saving up for the trip to Sturgis for the 75th Anniversary Bash being held there later this year. Optimistic chamber officials pointed out that next year would be their 75th, so maybe some were waiting for next year. Even with numbers down, it was still an incredible party. It might have even been a little more enjoyable! On an upbeat note, I read reports that there were no major issues reported by the Daytona Beach Police – including no motorcyclist fatalities. Anytime you have hundreds of thousands of any group in an area, you’re bound to have some problems. Whether it’s bikers or quilters, things just happen. The fact that everyone seemed to make it through safely is a blessing not to be ignored. See you on the road! The Iron Cowboy! An attractive blonde from Cork, Ireland , arrived at the casino . She seemed a little intoxicated and bet twenty thousand dollars on a single roll of the dice. She said, “I hope you don’t mind, but I feel much luckier when I’m completely nude .” with that, she stripped from the neck down, rolled the dice and with an Irish brogue yelled, “Come on, baby, Mama needs new clothes!” As the dice came to a stop, she jumped up and down and squealed. “Yes! Yes! I won , I won !” She hugged each of the dealers, picked up her winnings and her clothes and quickly departed. The dealers stared at each other dumb-founded . Finally, one of them asked, “What did she roll?” The other answered, “I don’t know - I thought you were watching.” Moral of the Story: Not all Irish are drunks, not all blondes are dumb, but all men...are men! I recently spent $6,500 on a young registered Black Angus bull. I put him out with the herd but he just ate grass and wouldn’t even look at a cow. I was beginning to think I had paid more for that bull than he was worth. Anyhow, I had the Vet come and have a look at him. He said the bull was very healthy, but possibly just a little young, so he gave me some pills to feed him once per day. The bull started to service the cows within two days… all my cows! He even broke through the fence and bred with all of my neighbor’s cows! He’s like a mating machine! I don’t know what was in them pills the Vet gave him.......... but they kinda’ taste like peppermint. Was in the Texas Rose Road House bar last night after riding my bike all day. Just sitting there waiting for a beer, remembering all the good events of the day’s ride, when a butt-ugly, big ole’ drunk heifer came up behind me. She slapped me on the ass,....hard. She hollered out really loud for the whole bar to hear. “Hey cowboy, how bout’ givin’ me your number! I looked at her and yelled out, “Have you got a pen?” She said, “I surely do, sweet cheeks.” I yelled back, just as loud, “Well, you better get back into it before the Farmer notices you’re missing.” * (I guarded my manhood, but my dental surgery is on Friday.)

Four old Catholic men and a Catholic woman were having coffee in St. Peters Square. The first Catholic man tells his friends, “My son is a priest, when he walks into a room, everyone calls him ‘Father’.” The second Catholic man chirps, “My son is a Bishop. When he walks into a room people call him ‘Your Grace’.” The third Catholic gent says, “My son is a Cardinal. When he enters a room everyone bows their head and says ‘Your Eminence’.” The fourth Catholic man says very proudly, “My son is the Pope. When he walks into a room people call him ‘Your Holiness’.” Since the lone Catholic woman was sipping her coffee in silence, The four men give her a subtle, “Well....?” She proudly replies, I have a daughter, Slim & Tall Extra Long Legs that go all the way up to form perfectly round buttocks. 44 D Breasts 24” Waist and 34” Hips When she walks into a room, people always say,“ JEEESUS!!” Ever wonder what a man’s ultimate embarrassment might be? I’d have to say it would be running into a brick wall with a good stiff erection......and breaking his nose. And turn about is fair play... A woman’s would have to be standing on the scales and literally having to reach down and separate her sagging boobs, just so she can read the numbers. As they say.....It Is What It Is. A motorist was mailed a picture of his car speeding through an automated radar post in Portland, Oregon. A $40 speeding ticket was included. Being cute, he sent the police department a picture of $40. The police responded with another mailed photo of handcuffs. Police were at the door of a suspect under investigation for armed robbery. Police - Open up, Billy, we need to have a word with you. Billly - Do you have a warrant? Police - Like we said, this isn’t an official visit as yet. Billy - If it isn’t official, then what is it? Police - Look, Billy, we just want to talk to you. Billy - How many of you are out there? Police - There’s just two of us. Billy - Then talk to each other.

BIKE OF THE MONTH

2007 Honda Shadow GLX600 Congratulations to Joey Boron on winning our monthly Bike Contest!

NAME:___________________________________________________ ADDRESS:_______________________________________________ CITY:____________________________________________________ STATE:___________________________ ZIP:____________________ Make checks payable to: Thunder Roads Tennesse, 3030 Quail Court, Greenbrier, TN 37073 May 2015

Here’s Joey’s story about his bike… This journey started when a lady that works for my dad asked if I could try and get her 2007 Honda Shadow GLX600 running. It only had 750 original miles on it and it had been sitting in a barn for over 5 years after she had a minor accident in her driveway. I completely tore down the carburetor, rebuilt it (5 year old gas), got the bike cleaned up (mouse poop in air filter), and got it running and drivable. When I asked her if she was going to start riding again, she said, “No Way! My husband wants it gone.” After several years of riding and racing sport bikes, I decided to do something different. I bought the bike from her and immediately started planning the construction. I spent a lot of time on the internet and talking to my friends at the Honda store getting ideas for this bobber. Some of the modifications include: Blue Collar Bobbers seat, pan, turn signals, 34 Ford tail light and bracket, fenders, pipe wrap, and side panels. Cobra drag pipes and a carburetor jet kit. A halo headlamp, Kuryakyn pegs, “Z” shaped custom handlebars, whitewall tires, and of course a custom paint scheme. The handling and ride on this bike is awesome. Even my dad likes riding it (Goldwing guy). Of course, there was no room for my fiancé’ Ariel on this bike, so I have a 2005 Honda Shadow Sabre VT1100 too, with a double up seat. Thanks to all those who voted for my bike in Thunder Roads Magazines monthly contest. If you have a cool custom bike you would like to have featured in our magazine, enter it in our monthly contest by submitting a pic of it to ThunderRoadsTn@gmail.com

MICHIGAN GUN LAW EVOLVES A lot of discussion is happening around the bills that passed recently into law regarding firearms here in Michigan. The changes enacted through these bills will take effect on December 1, 2015, and are focused on the Concealed Pistol License (CPL) and the application process for obtaining one. With nearly 600,000 total CPL applications (including pending, approved, denied, revoked, etc.) across the state of Michigan, it’s no surprise that some restructuring has occurred. The truth is, the bills did a wonderful job in streamlining the application process, and stating in clear language all the details necessary for CPL holders to know. The largest change to the structure is that the bills eliminate the county gun boards. Instead, the applications will be processed strictly by the county clerks, with the state police doing all the background investigations. Some people, such as Wayne County residents, will see almost no change in how the application process works, as the Wayne County clerk has been processing those applications for years already. The other change that will be readily apparent is in the pricing structure. The current $105 fee will be dropped to a flat $100 fee for new applicants, and the renewal applicant fee will see a price raise to $115. All counties will be required to provide a laminated CPL card at no cost to the applicant, but may charge up to $10 for a hard plastic license, only if they also offer the free option. A change that most renewal applicants will appreciate is that, since your application is signed under oath, you will not be required to submit proof that you have trained, but your signature on the affidavit stating you have done so will be sufficient. Most CPL instructors will likely still offer the review option for students who want to stay updated on the most current legal changes, even though it will not be a requirement anymore. The county clerks will still be providing the compiled firearms laws to applicants when they apply, but

always be sure you stay informed on any legal changes. A few minor changes include some additions to the information required on the certificate issued by instructors, as well as some clearly stated consequences for violating any of the provisions contained within the amended laws. While the laws regarding what is required of CPL applicants and CPL holders has not changed, it is clearly stated, and more easily understood by most people. When one applies for their CPL, they give implied consent to submit to analysis of breath, blood, or urine, and the new phrasing gives clear direction on this. There are specific consequences for refusal to submit to such analysis, and they are outlined clearly in the new document. This is a section of the law that many people have missed over the years, and having a clearly devoted section on it is, in my opinion, a very positive improvement. If you would like to read the document in full, simply search online for, “Public act 3 of 2015,” or, “Senate Bill 34.” Michigan law can also be found online by searching the Michigan Compiled Law (MCL).

LESTER INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) and affiliated & supported groups and organizations, extend Congratulations to founder Richard M. Lester on his recent induction into the Freedom Fighters Hall of Fame. The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame has announced their 2015 inductees into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame and one into the Freedom Fighters Hall of Fame. Lester, a California attorney who founded AIM & NCOM three decades ago and numerous subsequent motorcycle outreach groups, is the first national bikers’ rights attorney to be inducted. “The Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame is designed to recognize individuals or groups who have made a long term positive impact on the motorcycle community,” said museum Executive Director Christine Paige Diers. “The Freedom Fighters Hall of Fame recognizes the commitment and sacrifices individuals across the nation, and world, have made to protect the rights of motorcyclists, and who have made a significant impact through their work in grassroots rights efforts.” Richard became an attorney at the ripe age of 45. While in law school he realized that motorcycle riders were an unrepresented group who didn’t have a voice. His love for the sport prompted him to focus on the need of a voice in the motorcycling community. In 1982 after passing the bar, his work for motorcycling began. It took him a couple of years to organize a team of attorneys who rode motorcycles, and who also had an understanding of what was needed in the motorcycle community and how to go about finding the voice that was needed. 36

Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (AIM) was founded in 1984, and is a legal protection program that is free for all motorcycle riders, providing free medical information and emergency contact of next-of-kin. To date, over 2 million cards have been distributed nationwide, with A.I.M. attorneys in every state providing legal services for riders and doing pro-bono (free) work within the motorcycle community. The following year, in 1985 Richard Lester founded the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) to provide a much-needed voice for the motorcycling community. Today NCOM is a national organization with over 2,400 motorcycle groups and organizations that have joined together as a whole to tackle the legal and legislative aspect of motorcycle riding. Today, more than 30 years later, Richard is still working hard for the motorcycling community. He has attorneys in every state, and has also founded three (3) additional organizations so that every motorcycle rider has a voice. One program is the Confederation of Clubs, which is comprised of motorcycle clubs, from 1%ers to family clubs. The Christian ministry sector came together in 2005 to form Christian Unity to improve networking with both secular and Christian bike groups. And the newest addition is the National Sports Bike Association, the sport bike division of NCOM to have a clear and unadulterated voice directly from the Sport Bike Community on issues that directly affect them. “Richard has dedicated his life to the lifestyle of motorcycling and has contributed so much of his time and effort, not to mention the financial investment he has donated to the cause,” reads his nomination for the Freedom Fighter Hall of Fame. “He is the only attorney who has always, and continues, to give back to the motorcycling community by creating five (5) FREE and useful national programs, and by hosting many conventions and seminars to educate and inform all motorcyclists of their right to ride.” Individuals chosen for induction into the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame and the Freedom Fighters Hall of Fame will be honored at the annual induction breakfast ceremony on Wednesday, August 5, 2015, at The Lodge at Deadwood during the 75th anniversary of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. This event is open to the public and tickets are available at www.sturgismuseum.com/hall-of-fame/freedom-fighters, or by calling (605) 347-2001. SOUTH DAKOTA RAISES SPEED LIMITS IN TIME FOR STURGIS South Dakota became the latest state to kick up the speed limit, as an amendment to Senate Bill 1 passed on March 24, 2015 changing the speed limit on the state’s two interstate highways. The new law took effect on April 1 (no joke), so you’ll legally be able to travel at 80 mph on the I-90 and I-29, meaning that motorists and bikers going to the 75th Anniversary Sturgis Rally will arrive a little bit faster. States across the country have been raising their speed limits as lawmakers argue that roads and cars are safer. Idaho, Wyoming and Utah have already raised their limits to 80 mph; on one toll road in Texas, it’s 85. CONGRESSIONAL MEASURE WOULD CREATE “AUTOCYCLE” VEHICLE CLASS With a growing number of 3-wheeled vehicles hitting the marketplace, Congress seeks to create a new classification of vehicles to be designated as “Autocycles”. Previously, these types of vehicles have been classified as motorcycles, so Senator David Vitter (R-LA) has introduced the Autocycle Safety Act, S. 685, to create their own new category and require the new class of three-wheeled enclosed vehicles to meet both motorcycle safety standards as well as certain passenger vehicle standards. 3-wheelers are currently exempt from many state and federal rules

NEW JERSEY BANS MOTORCYCLE-ONLY CHECKPOINTS On March 23, 2015 New Jersey Governor Christie signed into law a piece of legislation (A-2316/S-1614) prohibiting law enforcement agencies from conducting roadside checkpoints or systematic inspections that focus only on motorcycles. It will not prevent any other type of road block or checkpoint that is for a valid law enforcement purpose, but it must include vehicles of all types, not just motorcycles-only. This law goes into effect immediately. ABATE of the Garden State, worked with the legislators from District 1 (Cape May) and was successful in getting the bill introduced in February of 2014. In February 2015 it passed both houses of the legislature with unanimous votes from both chambers. Many NJ motorcycle riders wrote, called and emailed their legislators to ask for their support on this important legislation. “This new law will prohibit the unlawful practice of profiling a whole class of motorists simply because of their chosen, and legal mode of transportation”, says Jim Parker, Legislative Coordinator for ABATE of the Garden State. RED LIGHT LAW PASSED IN KENTUCKY Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear signed HB 370 on April 2nd that allows a motorcycle to proceed through a red light if it fails to operate after 2 minutes or 2 cycles of the light with no other oncoming traffic. The Kentucky Motorcycle Association pushed for the legislation, which it says is needed because the lower weight of motorcycles sometimes means that traffic light sensors embedded in roads don’t detect them, meaning lights do not change. House Bill 370, sponsored by Rep. Johnny Bell (D-Glasgow) and Rep. Wilson Stone (D-Scottsville) creates an affirmative defense against a traffic violation for entering or crossing an intersection against a steady red light for a person operating a motorcycle. An affirmative defense is “a defense in which the defendant introduces evidence, which, if found to be credible, will negate criminal or civil liability, even if it is proven that the defendant committed the alleged May 2015

acts,” which in this case applies if a motorcycle is brought11/1/11 to a complete 5:06 PM stop, the traffic control signal shows a steady red light for two minutes or if the traffic control signal completes two lighting cycles and if the traffic control signal appears to be malfunctioning or doesn’t detect the arrival of a motorcycle. Another condition of the defense is that no person or motor vehicle is approaching the intersection or that any approaching person or motor vehicle is so far from the intersection that it does not constitute an immediate hazard. Jay Huber, president of the Kentucky Motorcycle Association, said the longer motorcyclists remain at a light, the longer they are a target for inattentive drivers. “It becomes an issue of safety,” he said. BILL WOULD REQUIRE MOTORCYCLE LICENSE IN ALABAMA Legislators in Alabama, the only State in the Union that doesn’t require a motorcycle license or endorsement, are considering legislation to end that distinction. An oversight in the 1990s led to a gap in the law that allows anyone 16 and older with a regular driver’s license to also operate a motorcycle in the state. If enacted, the new law would require operators to pass a knowledge test to obtain a Class M endorsement, and the bill also authorizes police officers to write a ticket if you are riding a motorcycle without a license. 40 states require a skills test for a motorcycle license, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures, but that’s not likely to happen anytime soon in Alabama. Political insiders indicate the bill is likely to reach Governor Bentley’s desk, who is expected to sign it into law. TEXAS BIKE BILL REQUIRES 3-FOOT CLEARANCE FROM DRIVERS A new bill could mean new rules for Texas drivers. House Bill 2459 states that drivers would have to give pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists three feet when passing or turning. HB 2459 was heard in the Texas House Transportation Committee for “unprotected road users,” and if passed a violation would be a Class B Misdemeanor. “At this point, I’m excited with three feet, anything is better than zero feet. We’re just waiting to see whether or not Governor Greg Abbott ratifies that bill,” cyclist Les Akins told Newschannel 6, adding that he hopes HB 2459 will raise awareness. QUOTABLE QUOTE: “Liberty is always dangerous, but it is the safest thing we have.” Harry Emerson Fosdick (1878-1969), American pastor

Nashville to Represent at the

2015 Tennessee State H.O.G. Rally It’s no secret that Nashville, TN turns out some of the best musicians and songwriters in the world. One local band has become a permanent fixture on Nashville’s Hippie Radio 94.5 FM. Vinyl Radio, a professional 70’s tribute band whose tagline is Peace, Love, Vinyl has been tearing up the city’s music scene since the band’s inception in 2011. Playing happening venues such as 3rd & Lindsley and Puckett’s as well as private events, Vinyl Radio has become a favorite among the motorcycling community. If you were unable to catch this talented band at a Boswell’s Harley-Davidson’s private event in 2013 or 2014 or the 2014 Tennessee State H.O.G. Rally in Cookeville, TN, you’re in luck! Vinyl Radio will be rocking righteous 70’s tunes again this year at the 2015 Tennessee State H.O.G. Rally. Check out the VR boys at the rally on Thursday, May 28th at the Holiday Inn Express parking lot. An invigorating day of carving the Cumberland followed by a good ol’ parking lot party throw down is the cure for all that ails! As if that isn’t enough to get your motor running, Vinyl Radio is slated to open for the legendary Three Dog Night at the Putnam County Fairgrounds, closing out the rally on Saturday, May 30th. Peace, Love, Rock n’ Roll! www.facebook.com/vinylradio Nashville’sPremierRockin’SoulBand,TheConSoulerswillbegroovin’attherallyonWednesday, May 27th at the Holiday Inn parking lot. The ConSoulers render a refreshing concoction of soul and Motown classics with a twist of original hits. Second to none, this incredibly talented band has a loyal following of fans that would make the O’Jays jealous! www.theconsoulers.com Also performing at the 2015 Tennessee State H.O.G. Rally opening night, Tuesday, May 26th are The Kentucky Headhunters whose southern rock and country roots will have you singing and dancing to feel-good tunes we all know and love. TKH won a Grammy for their album ‘Pickin’ on Nashville’...now, if that ain’t country - (you know the rest!) Returning by popular demand, a true musical and Tennessee icon, Charlie Daniels. CDB will be rockin’ the Putnam County Fairgrounds on Friday, May 29th with all their hits. Charlie’s career now spans 50 years. He is an internationally known legend in southern rock and country music genres. There are folks in this world who seem genuinely anointed - in my book, Charlie Daniels is one! You won’t want to miss this exciting lineup of shows as musicians take the mic while riders park their bike and boogie ‘til the cows come home at the 2015 Tennessee State H.O.G. Rally! Enjoy the ride, Melissa Barrett “Miz B”
