Just How Many Mags From The Wannabe’s Actually Stay In Tennessee When They Sell To So Many Regional Areas?

Well Spring is definitely here, the sun’s hanging around longer, and we know you’re itching to get riding! There are so many events happening around our great state that you won’t have a problem finding something to do, not to mention the Tennessee Thunder Run will keep you busy riding from ride stop to ride stop. If you haven’t gotten your Ride card at one of the Registration/Ride Stops yet, now’s a good time to do so and ride to win some great prizes! Look in this issue for all the details and a list of April’s winning numbers or on our new website. If you go to our website and click on one of the stars on the ride stop map, you can actually download a virtual map to your phone or you can scan the QR code in this issue and do the same thing. Speaking of events, if you didn’t make it out to the Buffalo Valley AMA Amateur Hillclimb last month, you don’t know what you missed. But, you will have another chance to see it on September 17th and I highly recommend making the trip to see it, it was so much fun to watch! You can read all about it in this issue. Also, the Buffalo Valley AMA Pro Hillclimb will take place on July 30th and I know it will be a blast too! We hope to see a lot of folks at both of these events and if you stop by our booth while you’re there with your ride card, you will get a bonus check-in for the Tennessee Thunder Run contest. Also, you don’t want to miss the Smoky Mountain Thunder Memorial Ride XVI, May 29th in Sevierville, TN or the 2016 Tennessee State HOG Rally, May 31st – June 4th in Memphis, TN! See the events page for all the details and we hope to see you at both of these events too. Make sure you check out all the Mother’s Day events and specials on the events page, your favorite rider will appreciate it, but here’s a bonus idea ... Make her day special. Start out with brunch, then enjoy a ride together. Take the time to write a thoughtful card telling her just what she means to you. That’s always the best gift of all! Chocolate and flowers are nice, but choosing something specifically related to motorcycles, from great new riding gear to cool biker jewelry would be a fun and unique way to honor her on this special day.

Chaplain’s Corner Pastor Ron Baptiste Founder of Covenant Confirmers Ministries Inc. www.covenantconfirmers.org Founder of Tennessee Biker Medical Clinic Inc. www.tennesseebikermedicalclinic.org TN.COC State Chaplain www.tenncoc.homestead.com Member of NCOM Christian Unity Council www.facebook.com/NCOM.Christian.Unity Pastor Ron’s messages can now be downloaded off the website Leadership Skills can now be downloaded off the website

“Lunatic” Mat.17:1-26 Jesus had three years to teach His disciples all the leadership skills that they were going to need to start the New Testament Church and He spent seven days a week, twentyfour hours a day instructing them. Jesus had His 1st string and 2nd string ministry teams. On this occasion Jesus took the 1st string team up to the “Mt. of Transfiguration” and sent the 2nd string team to the bottom of the mountain into the city to minister. Both teams were sent by God but in different lanes. The 1st string team saw a glorious miracle when they saw “Moses & Elias appear with Jesus and God spoke to them, Jesus Himself was transformed.” The first thing they did was to let their human emotions appear. Peter wanted to stay on the mountain top and build three churches then they became fearful and fell on their faces, “Jesus touched them and said, Arise and be not afraid. They lifted up their eyes, they saw NO MAN SAVE JESUS.” The problem today, too many Christians have their eyes on the superstars of Faith (TV preachers), or their Religions and denominations. So the 1st string ministry team let their human emotions get the best of them. Now when they came down from the mountain they ran into another problem from the 2nd string ministry team: There came a man running to Jesus with a complaint, “ lord have mercy on my son for he is a lunatic and sore vexed, for he keeps falling into the fire and often into the water.” Just like some of us, we keep making the same mistakes in our relationships, jobs, finances, marriages, and churches. Some just “Keep falling into the fire?” If you keep making the same bad choices but expecting different results, you’re a Lunatic! This man got to Jesus before his disciples did so he could tell his side of the story first; “I brought him to thy disciples and they could not cure him.” I went to your church and nothing happened, I heard your preacher on Sunday morning and nothing happened, I gave my tithe and nothing happened. Hurting people always want to blame God for all their failures and problems. “The disciples came to Jesus apart and ask, why couldn’t we cast him out?” Just like some of us, why can’t my marriage work, why can’t I be healed, why can’t I May 2016

prosper, why can’t I be happy? Jesus said “O faithless and perverse generations…it’s because of your unbelief!” The same problem that existed then is even worse today, the problem is our environment. We are so consumed with worldly TV, movies, music, politicians, and even our school systems are corrupt. “We wrestle not with flesh & blood but with principalities.” In these last days the devil has released more demonic beings than ever before, that’s why we see so much violence in society and across the world today. We battle with Regional spirits, Generational spirits and Familiar spirits and this is why Jesus called it a “faithless & perverse generation.” But our God is still on the throne! It doesn’t matter what the devil releases, if we stand on the Word of God we will have victory. We must know the Word in order to stand on it and this is why Jesus said “This kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.” Now we see the 2nd string ministry team fail through doubt & unbelief. Jesus didn’t test either team to see what they would do, He is God. He knows what they would do, and it was for them to know what they would do. The devils, trials, and tribulations in your life are for your “Exercise,” to strengthen you. You’ll never learn how to fight until you’ve been in one and this is where you learn how to duck. Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

Petrified Forest National Park The Petrified Forest National Park is located near Holbrook AZ. The park road (the only remnant of Route 66 in a National Park) runs between Exit 311 on I-40 and Highway 180. To return to I-40, drive 18 miles north to Holbrook. Here Route 66 runs along I-40. Be careful as many GPS readings are way off in this area. If you are expecting to see a standing forest of petrified trees, not gonna happen. These, over 200 million year old trees, had fallen and washed down the then existent river to form log jams and then volcanic ash turned the wood into silica-quartz. The rainbow colors were caused by traces of iron, manganese, and copper. Some of these trees were originally up to 200 feet tall. The hardness, with talc at 1 and diamonds at 10, of petrified wood is a 7-8. Its hardness and coloration makes it popular for jewelry and items like furniture and bookends. Yes, Judy added to her jewelry collection. Just don’t get any ideas about picking up any souvenirs! Shops around the park sell non-park pieces and many will give you a free half-pound. If you buy any rock before entering the park, be sure to have a ranger mark it at the Visitors Center. We saw a couple, with their kids, sitting on the curb, as a ranger weighed the kid’s collection. The weight determines the fine and theirs was estimated at between $1,500 and $2,000. As it weighs 160-200 pounds per cubic foot, it doesn’t take much to add up. Visitors are urged to “rat out” the “collectors” because otherwise there won’t be any left for future visitors to see. Be sure to stop at the Visitors Center to pick up a map of the numerous trails. In addition to the petrified wood, the park has a 100 room Puerco Pueblo village complete with views of petroglyphs. Spotting scopes offer views of Newspaper Rock, with 100’s of petroglyphs, fossils, and views of the Painted Desert. A part of the Painted Desert is in the Petrified Forest National Park. The Desert is a badlands running 200 miles southeast from the Grand Canyon, on the northeastern bank of the Little Colorado River, covering 7,500 square miles. Its colorful sands result from the exposure of red, lavender, and yellow

12

sediment, and bentonite clay. Besides being viewed, at a distance, hikes can be made in the wilderness areas of park. If you find yourself in this area of Arizona, the Petrified Forest is a must see. Be sure to take water and keep an eye out for dangerous thunderstorms. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper

Lady Rider Kimberly Martin Hi there! My name is Kimberly Kasey Courtney Martin! I’m 51 years old and I live in Knoxville, Tennessee and I’m just one more woman in the ever-growing populous of Lady Riders! One year, three motorcycles, several charity rides, and thousands of miles later - I’m now carving out my journey on the road with my absolute favorite motorcycle, my 2015 Indian Scout, Otekah! (It’s Navajo for sun maiden). If someone had told me I would be doing this a year ago, even I would say, no way! You see, in 2009 I had back surgery that went extremely wrong and left me with 100% nerve damage on my right side, leaving me with no feeling in my leg from the knee down and nerve pain in my right foot and toes. It took me almost three years to learn to drive, walk, or even wear shoes again! I know there are worse things that happen but at the time it was pretty devastating to me. With a lot of hard work, determination, and support I was able to overcome, in spite of my disability, and learned to ride a motorcycle. I was so determined to make that happen there was absolutely nothing that was going to stand in my way and I did it! I just want all women to know the freedom you feel when riding a motorcycle. Whatever your situation may be, the mind is a very powerful tool, face your adversity head on and overcome it. That doesn’t just apply to riding a motorcycle but every struggle you encounter. It’s never too late to live your dreams. I got my motorcycle endorsement after taking a three day riding course locally. My first motorcycle was a 2001 Harley-Davidson Softail Deuce which I could barely ride because of the front controls, so I got a 2015 Harley-Davidson Street 750 and then I was introduced to the Indian Scout! As soon as I threw my leg over the seat and sat on it, I knew this was the motorcycle for me! I was skeptical at first because of the front controls, but with the reduced reach seat offered by Indian, I had no problem at all riding this motorcycle...I totally fell in love with it! For me, there is no better therapy than to be out on my motorcycle riding with my husband, friends, and fellow Knoxville Indian Motorcycle Riders Group members on some of the most beautiful and challenging roads in East Tennessee and surrounding states! I’m so very excited and looking forward to some upcoming customization on my Scout and I look forward to seeing and meeting a lot of you out there on the road! Don’t hesitate to say hello if you see me out riding. I love being a part of the motorcycle family- I don’t care what you ride as long as you ride! Ride safely, Kimberly We would love to hear YOUR story! ALL ladies are welcome and encouraged to join and contribute to our monthly Lady Rider column. Please submit your story and photos to: ThunderRoadsTn@gmail.com 14

HOW TO GET STARTED

IT’S REALLY THAT SIMPLE!

1. Go to any Registration Stop listed on the map with a red star or on the Stops pages. The information that you provide when you sign-up for your FREE Ride Card only goes to us and will NOT be used for any other purpose than this contest, but may be shared with the dealership you get your card from. You will not have to provide any other personal information again after this. You will be handed your FREE Ride Card right then. It has a unique number on it- take note because that is YOURS and ONLY YOURS. Once you get your card, you do not need to register again. The Ride Cards do NOT expire so hold on to it. THIS WILL BE A YEARLY CONTEST, so you’ll need it next season too! 2. Once you have your Ride Card go to any or all of the stops listed this month and show them your card! Registration Stops are also Ride Stops. That stop will write your unique Ride Card number down. Let them know if you spend over $10 there because your Ride Card number will get counted twice! 3. Check the following months issue to see if your Ride Card number is listed as a winner. You must check this each month as Thunder Roads® staff will not contact you and let you know you won. If your Ride Card number is listed as a winner, email TennesseeThunderRun@gmail.com to claim your prize. In the email please provide your name, address, phone number and Ride Card number. Again, the information only goes to us at Thunder Roads®. Please note: You only have 45 days to claim your prize from the 1st month it is listed in the magazine.

1. Get your Tennessee Ride Card. 2. Get the list of Stops each month from your Thunder Roads® Tennessee Magazine, our website, or Facebook page. 3. Ride out to these Stops and show them your card. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH!

We will be adding more Registration/Ride Stops and Ride Stops across the State every month, so make sure to pick-up your copy each month of Thunder Roads® Tennessee to see that month’s Ride Stops and also to see if your Ride Card is listed as a winner!

A FEW FACTS • • •

• • • •

Winners are randomly picked from each Registration/Ride Stop and Ride Stop. The more places you check-in the greater your chances are of winning a prize from that stop or one of our sponsors prizes! If you spend $10 or more at any of the Registration/Ride Stops or Ride Stops your Ride Card number gets counted twice! Please note: The reason why this contest is FREE to you, the rider, is because of our sponsors and stops. So we want to encourage everyone to support them in return. That is why we count your Ride Card number twice if you spend $10 or more. You can check-in 1 time each week at each Registration/ Ride Stop & Ride Stop. Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in. Some prize drawings are specific to only check-ins for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from checkin’s season long. ALL CHECK-INS remain in the system for end of the season prizes!

May 2016

Thunder Roads® Tennessee will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Bike Nights may have special booth for Ride Card registrations. We will list these events each month on the Event Stops page in the magazine. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives to those checking in with their previously issued Ride Card at these stops. Thunder Roads® Tennessee will also be working with charities and various nonprofit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events. The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all Stops. Some Thunder Roads® Tennessee Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads® will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your TENNESSEE RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! This is not simply a “Chinese Fire Drill” or maddash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.

JUST GET OUT AND RIDE! We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. If your business would like to be a Stop or be a Sponsor, please email us at TennesseeThunderRun@gmail.com

LET’S RIDE! As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at TennesseeThunderRun@gmail.com

BUFFALO VALLEY AMA AMATEUR HILLCLIMB By Scott High

Photos Cooper Chilton In 2015 as part of the TN State HOG rally, Gary Bagwell convinced the AMA to bring their Pro Hillclimb Series further south than they had ever been before. The First ever AMA Pro Hillclimb in Tennessee was a huge success, so much so that they named Gary AMA Pro Hillclimb Promoter of the Year. This year Middle Tennessee Dragway owners Gary and Theresa Huddleston opened their facility to AMA Hillclimb again, and there are 3 races scheduled for 2016. The first Buffalo Valley AMA Amateur Hillclimb presented by Thunder Roads Tennessee and Boswell’s Country Roads H-D was April 9th and it brought racers from all over as well as a few locals to compete for the beautiful Buffalo Head Trophies. There were lots of spectators on hand to watch the first race on the hill this year. The racing started with a little fella with training wheels on his bike, he made it 4 feet up the hill before his training wheels lifted his back wheel off the dirt stopping his forward progress, but he won his class! Next up, slightly bigger guys on slightly bigger bikes the 50cc class. I was amazed when these kids, some of them seasoned competitors at 7-8 years old, made it all the way up the hill and competed for lowest time. After that the 65cc bikes, some of the same kids were competing in several classes just like the grownups. As the day went on, the bikes and the riders got bigger. AMA Pro racer Craig DeHart brought a couple of his nitromethane bikes down to do some exhibition runs between some of the classes. The Amateurs will be back in September, and the AMA Pro Hillclimb will be at Middle Tennessee Dragway on July 30th, so

if you’ve never seen a Hillclimb come on out. After the Pro race, there will be a Verticross race, like an uphill motocross race and it looks pretty fun! Bike of the Month

1996 H-D Softail Custom

Congratulations to Jonathan Jackson on winning our monthly Bike Contest on Facebook! Hey Y’all, First I would like to thank all the ones that voted for my bike in the contest. I am Jonathan Jackson and this is my 1996 Harley-Davidson Softail Custom nick named Margaret after a very special lady in my life. I bought the bike at Appleton HarleyDavidson back in February of 2015 so I am fairly new to the whole riding, being that this is my first bike I have owned. I had been wanting a bike for years but couldn’t decide on what type of bike to get. I had help and advice from family and friends on deciding what kind of bike to get so I took the plunge and got one. When I bought the bike it had a lot of stuff already done to it but I started looking online and in magazines and started seeing more that I could do to it. The bike right now has Vance and Hines exhaust hyper charger air intake and a lot of chrome accents and pieces on it but there is a lot more I could do to the bike and later down the road I hope to add those pieces to it. In the little over the year I have had the bike, I have met a lot of people that I call family and come to realize that the biker community to me is more of a family. So with that being said, I hope to see and meet more people in the future on the road. And again thank you to all that voted for the bike. If you have a cool custom bike you would like to have featured in our magazine, enter it in our monthly contest by submitting a pic of your bike to ThunderRoadsTn@gmail.com May 2016

Mule Day Soiree in Columbia, TN By: Rebel Ron Photos by Dawn Taylor

ladies that was quickly followed by more music from the cool band from Dickson, TN, CDB III.

The first weekend in April has long been the date of the decades long Mule Day event that transforms this sleepy little town of 40,000 into a bustling city of 200,000 that week!!! People come from all over the US and the world to take part in this celebration of the hard headed hard working animal we call the mule. S & G Custom Cycles has held a customer appreciation party on the Saturday of the 5 day event which is also the day of the huge parade through town. We begin our 34 year old event early that day and end it early too because there is so much to see and do around town. At 9am we serve a Redneck Breakfast of a cup of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer and a BBQ sandwich with some fixings. Then at 10am we had the fantastic rock band, Charlie Bonnett III & The Rebel Ways band take the stage to entertain us. Personally I enjoy hearing music I’ve never heard before and, like everyone else, I also enjoy the classics too. Both rock and country. Charlie and his boys have the perfect answer for this, they play a rock or country classic that we all know then they play one of their great original songs. Perfect! Watch for this band and support them, they have it going on. At 11:30 the band takes a break and we give away dozens of door prizes, make announcements, and more. But the best part is the performance by Nashville’s Big Daddy Cool & his Voo Doo Vixens. He did some illusions and tricks for the crowd that had reluctantly left the warm sun outside and packed the building anticipating the stunt ladies show. And what a show it was this year! Vixen Crystal did an aerial acrobat set to music and then repeated her famous grinding set as well. A surprise for us all was the exciting fire hoola hooping set to music by the lovely front lady of the great Phoenix Rising band, Amy Brown. Fantastic set by the stunt

32

Sam Goodman, owner of S & G Cycles, wanted to thank Drag Specialties, Hardline Motorcycle Products, and Bikers Choice for door prizes along with all the riders who braved the chilly weather to have fun with us that day. I wanted to thank the many friends and family who helped us put on the show. I especially want to point out an organization we all need to support or even join. It is the biker group that defends the most defenseless in society, children. BACA (Bikers Against Child Abuse) does some great work for children and it is sad that they are needed so much. Look them up and support what they do with your time and money. After we closed down S & G Cycles we made the rounds to the local honky tonks for more food, live music, beer, laughter, and lots of brotherhood fun. It turned into a beautiful day and riders were all over the city. Our group stopped at Wayside Inn, Hooligans, the EBGB MC clubhouse, Rebel Bar & Grill, and the always fun Neon Moon. Enough of my words, enjoy the photos!!!! Y’all ride safe and often this year. Be sure to come to Columbia and check out all we have to offer in 2016.

14th Annual

Spring Thaw Motorcycle

Show

& Swap Meet

By: Rebel Ron Never mind what the Yankee ground hog says about Winter coming to an end. When we see that Scooter Williams’ Spring bike show is coming we know that is the only sign we can rely on that the new riding season is upon us once again. Time to get the bike ready, consider custom additions, new riding gear, or just look at what others have to share with us. The always anticipated event was moved to Nashville this year where we hope it will remain and grow too. And there was much more than just two wheelers to fest your eyes on because there was hot rods, rat trucks, old parts, riding gear, and lots of other items sold by numerous vendors. This is just one of many events that Both Barrels Productions put on every year and I highly recommend that you check out their long running Redneck Rumble events now held twice a year. Lots of fun and hundreds of cool bikes, cars, trucks and much much more. One of the more amazing group of bikers I met at the show this year were members of the BACA organization. Bikers Against Child Abuse have a very honorable task to protect abused children in many ways up to and including standing between the child and the abuser if required. Check them out and help them. wwwbacaworld.org or call 866-71-abuse. Let’s ride! And be careful out there. The blind cage drivers and the distracted drivers are a danger to those of us who enjoy the freedom of two wheel transportation.

BLACKENED SPICY GARLIC

SALMON 1-1/2 lbs. Wild Salmon (4, 6 oz. fillets, skinless) 1/2 tsp. Creole Seasoning 1/2 tsp. Dried Dill 2 Tbls. Pre-Chopped Garlic (in grocery’s chilled veggie section) or use real garlic; peeled & finely chopped 3 Tbls. Butter - sliced into 6 thin pats 1 Juice of fresh Lime; juice & zest both Salt & Pepper to taste Preheat oven to Broil. Adjust oven rack to the top of the oven. Season both sides of the Salmon w/ salt & black pepper, creole seasoning & dried dill. Place on a non-stick baking sheet. Toss garlic evenly over the salmon and top with butter pats; 2 pats for every piece of salmon. Place in the oven and broil for 7-10 minutes, making sure not to over-cook. Remove, cut lime in half and juice all pieces and then zest the lime over all pieces. This is such a great, light dish for Spring and the Creole seasoning and that blackened taste combined with the lime just makes it pop! Delish!

PASTA & FRESH PEAS SALAD

Box of Corkscrew Pasta Tbls. Quality Margarine Reg. Size Bag of Frozen Peas (thawed) Large Red Pepper cut up and roasted in oven @ 350 degrees for 10 mins. 1 Bottle of Alfredo Sauce (in grocery aisle along with spaghetti sauce) Cook your pasta until still a little bite left in it; do not cook until mushy. After draining pasta, add to a glass or ceramic bowl and add your heated all the way through Alfredo sauce

38

and the roasted red peppers. Salt & pepper to your desired taste and add the thawed peas last and gently stir so as not to squish the peas. This is a really good side dish to have with your Blackened Salmon as the creaminess of the Alfredo sauce truly compliments one another.

FEATHER-LIGHT SPRING COOKIES

1 Box of White Cake Mix 1 8 oz. Tub of Cool Whip 1 Egg Powdered Sugar (Confection) Mix all ingredients together to be dropped onto cookie sheet. Drop tablespoonful’s into a small bowl of Powdered Sugar to coat thoroughly to go on sheet. Bake at pre-heated 350 degrees for 12 minutes Cool before removing gently with a spatula. These are so light and not too sweet; just right. I’ve also done with other types of Cake Mix; red velvet, fudge chocolate, spice. The white ones’ just look airy and fluffy for Spring. Garnish w/ the zest of a tangerine over top for a little kick. Yummers!

CAMPFIRE STRAWBERRIES 1 Container of Big Sized Strawberries (it’s peak time now so be choosey) Farm Stands are good because often if you tell them they’re for a special recipe they’ll let you create your own selection box. 1 Bottle of premium Marshmallow Crème’; pour it out into a small glass or ceramic bowl. Wash your strawberries gently under cool water and dry with a paper towel very gently and then let rest on double paper towels to dry complete. Soak kabob wooden spears in water so they don’t burn and stick them into top of strawberry and then dip the bottom in the marshmallow crème’ and gently toast over fire until bottom golden brown. Can do over open flame gas stove too. These are so simple. Great to do w/ your kids. Enjoy!

Wash-Zilla My motorcycle washing habits have changed over my life. Years ago I washed and waxed my bikes so often you could probably see through the paint when I sold them. Then over the years the washings became less and less frequent to the point that for the last 10 or so years when people comment on my dirty bike I tell them “I didn’t buy it to wash, I bought it to ride.” Recently I took my bike in for a recall that was supposed to take about 30 minutes to finish. Over an hour passed so I walked back to the service guy to ask what was taking so long, he looked a little embarrassed and said “we’re washing your bike because…well because you’re not going to.” Since then I’ve been trying to do better and at least knock most of the bug guts off the front, so when Brad Lewis of Lewis Country Store told me he and his wife Renee and their partner Gary Tinch were putting warm air dryers in both of their Wash-Zilla Car Washes that are great for drying motorcycles I thought maybe this could help me keep my bike clean. I rode out to Wash-Zilla’s Hendersonville location and put my quarters in the slot and started washing. I put bugoff on the fairing and used the foamy brush to scrub them off, and washed the rest of the bike. Then I rinsed with mostly low pressure spray but used the high pressure where it wouldn’t hurt anything. The dryer, called the Air Shammee was next so I pushed the button on the panel. There is a trigger you have to pull on the Air Shammee so the hose won’t flop out of control if you drop it, it blows warm air hard enough to move the water off and dries what’s left so a few minutes later I was standing there looking at a spotlessly clean and dry bike. It was so quick and easy that if you see my bike dirty now it’s just because I haven’t ridden past a Wash-Zilla in a few days. Now I just need to take my truck through their wash tunnel. Check out their ad in this issue for locations and try them out for yourself!

Bullet Points

FIRST FREEDOMS BY RICK WYATT In case you haven’t noticed we are entering a period of time that comes around every four years which has been aptly named the political “silly season.” We will be subjected to a relentless onslaught of media ads, bill boards, mass mailings, and telephone calls making pie in the sky promises, pointing accusatory fingers, and voicing outlandish claims as candidates woo and schmooze us for our vote. I would never presume to tell anybody how to vote and I am not really preoccupied with “R’s” or “D’s” or pachyderms or jackasses; but I do pay attention to ideological viewpoints and the perceived role of government in the everyday lives of citizens. Many of you are probably wondering what any of this has to do with “Bullet Points,” and my simple answer is that without an accurate historical perspective many people will gladly exchange their freedom (and ours) for the bondage of governmental dependence. There is a reason we have a Bill of Rights in our constitution, our founders lived under the tyranny of an abusive and distant government where all power and authority was reserved to the crown. Public meetings, including church, were closely monitored by agents of the government and speaking out or publishing anything that could be viewed critical of the king or his representatives would result in summary beatings, imprisonment, or execution without trial or appeal. Most people don’t know that the original drafts of the Constitution did not contain a Bill of Rights, instead they embraced Federalism with all authority once again resting with a central government then emanating to the states. If it had not been for George Mason and the Virginia delegation to the Continental Congress threatening to walk out of the proceedings we would probably be living under a very different form of government than we do. Mason believed that the power of government must come from the people and the rights of the people and the limits of government must be clearly defined. Once adopted these principals, our First Freedoms, have made the United States unique among the nations for the last 225 years, and the teeth behind these principals is the Second Amendment; our right to “keep and bear arms.” Some founders viewed the Second Amendment as more an obligation than a right, George Wash-

May 2016

ington wrote “A free people ought not only be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government.” To that I would add ---AMEN! Back to silly season and ideologies; there are more than 19,000 gun control laws on the books coast to coast already, most resulting as a knee jerk reaction to tragic, but isolated incidents such as the recent shootings in Kalamazoo. The loudest screams always follow mass shooting incidents and are accompanied by claims that we lead the world in such mayhem. Remember that old saying “figures don’t lie, but liars figure,” truth is we don’t make the top ten for mass shootings among modern industrialize nations and barely rank in the top one hundred among all the nations of the world. Another claim is that “more guns will result in more crime,” but according to Sheriff David Clark of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin expanded concealed carry laws actually drive crime statistics down and he actively encourages the citizens of his county to get licensed and carry. And then the third big lie is the need to close the “gun show loophole.” This claim has got to be the product of to many overactive imaginations on a proverbial witch hunt because sales at gun shows are governed by the same rules and laws as firearms sales anywhere else and any dealer caught outside the law is ejected by the show promoters (who have the most to lose). Those who muse that it would be impossible to disarm America apparently haven’t bought ammunition the last couple of years. When the EPA has closed the last lead foundry and is in the process of closing all the brass works around the United States, requiring the importation of these materials to make ammunition, you begin to realize they don’t have to take the guns. These are the same people who tell you what to eat, what to drive, how much soda you can drink, how warm/cool your house can be, nanny rule after nanny rule, regulate, regulate, control, control, etc., etc., etc. Another old saying to keep in mind “power corrupts, absolute power (control) corrupts absolutely,” and many in the political class believe they are best qualified to run each and every one of our lives. All that stands in their way is the Second Amendment and the people’s ability to take their government back!

The IRS decides to audit Grandpa, and summons him to the IRS office. The IRS auditor was not surprised when Grandpa showed up with his attorney. The auditor said, ‘Well, sir, you have an extravagant lifestyle and no full-time employment, Which you explain by saying that you win money gambling.. I’m not sure the IRS finds that believable.’ I’m a great gambler, and I can prove it,’ says Grandpa. ‘How about a demonstration?’ The auditor thinks for a moment and said, ‘Okay. Go ahead.’ Grandpa says, ‘I’ll bet you a thousand dollars that I can bite my own eye.’ The auditor thinks a moment and says, ‘It’s a bet.’ Grandpa removes his glass eye and bites it. The auditor’s jaw drops. Grandpa says, ‘Now, I’ll bet you two thousand dollars that I can bite my other eye.’ Now the auditor can tell Grandpa isn’t blind, so he takes the bet. Grandpa removes his dentures and bites his good eye. The stunned auditor now realizes he has wagered and lost three grand, with Grandpa’s attorney as a witness. He starts to get nervous. ‘Want to go double or nothing?’ Grandpa asks ‘I’ll bet you six thousand dollars that I can stand on one side of your desk, and pee into that wastebasket on the other side, and never get a drop anywhere in between.’ The auditor, twice burned, is cautious now, but he looks carefully and decides there’s no way this old guy could possibly manage that stunt, so he agrees again. Grandpa stands beside the desk and unzips his pants, but although he strains mightily, he can’t make the stream reach the wastebasket on the other side, so he pretty much urinates all over the auditor’s desk. The auditor leaps with joy, realizing that he has just turned a major loss into a huge win. But Grandpa’s own attorney moans and puts his head in his hands.

42

‘Are you okay?’ the auditor asks. ‘Not really,’ says the attorney. ‘This morning, when Grandpa told me he’d been summoned for an audit, he bet me twentyfive thousand dollars that he could come in here and piss all over your desk and that you’d literally be happy about it!’ Guts-Is arriving home late, after a night out with the lads, being met by your wife with a broom, & having the “Guts” to ask: “Are you still cleaning, or are you flying somewhere?” Balls-Is coming home late after a night out with the lads, reeking of perfume w/lipstick on your collar, slapping your wife on the bum and having the “Balls” to say: ‘You’re next, Chubby.’ Both have same result. Sudden death. _________________________________________________ One morning, before he goes out to the fields, the farmer says to his sweet, albeit ditzy blonde young wife, “The Artificial Insemination man is coming to impregnate one of our cows today. I drove a nail into the two-by-four above the cow’s stall so you can show him where it is, okay?” The Artificial Insemination man arrives. Suzy takes him down the long row of cows until she sees the nail, and tells him, “This is the one. This one right here!” “How did you know this is the cow to be bred?” the A.I. guys asks curiously to the ditzy cute blonde. “By the nail over her stall,” Suzy says proudly. Then the man asks, “What’s the nail for?” Well, duh, I reckon’ it’s to hang your pants on.” _________________________________________________ When little Tony Soprano returned home from elementary school, in his youth, he told his Dad he got an F in math. “Why?” asks the father? “The teacher asked ‘How much is 2x3’, I said “6’”, replies Tony. “But that’s right!” says his dad. “Yeah, but then she asked me “How much is 3x2?’” “What’s the f***ing difference?” screams the father. “That’s exactly what I said!”, little Tony yells.

by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: May is the month of Memorial Day. Some of you may remember when Memorial Day was called Decoration Day. Its purpose is to honor those who have died in the service of the United States of America. While Americans who have died in service of the United States go back to the beginning of our country, Decoration Day began shortly after the Civil War and was designated a federal holiday in 1971. The Civil War was a nationwide and very bloody war and not many families escaped the loss of a family member or someone close to them. The desire to honor those who died was almost universal. It was only natural that a national day to remember, honor and place flowers would be established. Tennessee also established June 3, after Memorial Day, to honor confederate war dead. There was a time in our country that you were either an American or you were not. There were no hyphenated qualifications to being an American. Hyphenations came later when the government found it easier to dominate the citizens if they could pit groups against each other by race, religion or ethnic origin. At one time you had to swear allegiance to the United States, learn English and study the history of the country to qualify for citizenship. Today you apparently qualify to be a citizen if you can sneak into the country. You can even get government benefits, preferential treatment for education and in some places you can vote. The intent of having a unified population with basic common beliefs, ideals and ways of interacting and health standards are being thrown out the window. I’m not saying it was a perfect world before but it was a widely held belief that granting citizenship to people who wanted to create enclaves for only people of their ethnicity, race or religion would fracture the fabric of our country. Today it seems accepted to be fractured and to encourage people to segregate, separate, operate outside the law and not accept American traditions. Of course we all like to associate with people like us. When we make a major purchase the salesmen try to find commonality and identify with us because they know that people are more likely to buy from someone who is like

May 2016

they are. We tend to hang with people who go to the same church we go to, who have the same interests we have, live in the same neighborhood or drive the same car or bike we have. Historically those who came to America legally worked hard to assimilate into society. They wanted to do what Americans did and to change to become more American. Today many who come to our country don’t bother. The government has assisted by mandating multi language print and allowing non conformity to traditional American standards. People now come here to create what they had where they came from. Now you don’t have to be an American to be considered an American. If things were so good where these people came from why did they leave? Why do they insist on remaining aligned with where they came from? So you ask, what is my point with this dissertation on Memorial Day, the fracturing of our society and illegal immigration? My point is that many Americans over the past couple of hundred years have raised their right hand and sworn allegiance to the United States of America. They put on a military uniform and swore to protect and defend our nation against all enemies foreign and domestic. With more and more people entering our country and not being required to become legal citizens, become educated in what it means to be an American and benefit from being able to communicate and assimilate into mainstream American society, we have a growing segment of our population that has no respect or honor for those who died protecting the country. Who are the people in positions of authority who think open borders and foreign enclaves in our country is going to end well. When you eat your hot dog on May 30 be an American. Please honor America’s defenders who have died. They went to war so you would have that hot dog, be able to cook it as you like and eat it without oppression. Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. Bulldog * My monthly column reflects my personal point of view and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Publishers of this magazine, but they, like me, acknowledge the sacrifices made for the privilege of Freedom of Speech, therefore, they gratefully let me rant. Thank you for reading my rants. Hope my opinions don’t offend anyone, but, we all should be grateful for the right to have free opinions.

THE ORIGINAL ROADSIDE BAR & GRILL: In Old Hickory on the border with Hermitage on the outskirts of Nashville there is a building that was a gas station and BBQ in the 1950’s. Through the years it has changed hands a few times but drifted towards being a bar that bikers were drawn to. In the 1990’s and the first few years after 2000 it began to look a little worn out and rough. Lucky for Tennessee bikers and anyone who likes a bar and grill where the customers are friendly and treat you like you are part of the family a group of good friends came together and resurrected the place. Now it is a treasure with great food, cold drinks, live music and good times named the “Original Roadside Bar & Grill.” The guys who came together to do this were all good friends who generally liked to ride but thought it would be a good idea if they could bring in a little extra money to help pay for their love of riding. Gary Spruill, Craig “Craiginator” Haynes, Jere Maggart, John “John Boy” Harrington and his brother Mark “Chief” Harrington decided to open a bar. None of the guys were previous bar owners and discovered opening a place of their own was like going back to school but figured if they could make it someplace they liked to go that others would like to go there too. A group coming together to start something can be a good thing or not. In this case it was good. A couple of the guys were focused on the bar and a couple were focused on food. In the end they arrived at a combination and agreed that if they were going to do it they would make it different and really good. The building needed some remodeling and they landscaped the backyard to make a courtyard where you could have outside music, sitting and privacy from traffic on Old Hickory Boulevard. Some biker and other cool memorabilia, a few eye catching signs and they were off to victory. Shortly after opening in October of 2011Gary Spruill was killed in a motorcycle accident. Gary’s passing brought a new level of dedication to the success of the Roadside to honor his memory and contribution. The Roadside is a smoke free place that prides itself on steamed, smoked and grilled food, oysters, shrimp and of course great specialty pizza. They are in the process of adding buffalo chicken, fettuccini and BBQ to the pizza options. They also make a great burger on pretzel buns and serve wings. One of my favorites is when they do their crawfish boil and dump it out on a table for an awesome feast. 46

Tuesday is acoustic night with a variety of singers and songwriters. Wednesday night is bike night and you can normally find Brent Meece laying it down. Another couple of regulars are Tim McDonald and Stacy Mitchhart. Stacey is an amazing blues guitarist and renowned around Nashville as are the other artists. The Roadside is hosting a benefit fundraiser poker run on June 11, 2016, with all proceeds going to the family of Shawn Lewis who was recently killed in a motorcycle accident. This heartfelt fundraiser will include a catfish fry and music from Kenneth Wright and the Hostile Witness band. Normal hours for the Roadside are 11 to midnight Sunday thru Thursday and 11 to 1am on Friday and Saturday. Sunday is always considered funday at the Roadside and is a place you can relax, party and get ready to go back to work on Monday. It’s also a great place to go instead of the 19th hole at the golf course. This is a wonderful place where everyone is welcome and guaranteed to leave with a tight belt and a smile on their face. When you get to the Roadside tell’em Bulldog sent you!!! If you are out riding to eat and see me please come up and tell me your favorite places to go when you’re hungry and thirsty. “Will Ride to Eat” will be an ongoing article in Thunder Roads Magazine of Tennessee and we want to put the spotlight on the great history and variety of Tennessee’s biker friendly establishments.

ANTI-PROFILING MEASURE APPROVED BY MARYLAND LEGISLATURE Maryland is set to become the second state in the country behind Washington to pass a law restricting police from profiling motorcyclists. Companion bills HB 785 (passed 136-0) and SB 233 (passed 47-0) call for a statement condemning motorcycle profiling to be included in police policies and require training of officers on “motorcycle profiling,” defined in the legislation as “The arbitrary use of the fact that an individual rides a motorcycle or wears motorcycle-related clothing or paraphernalia as a factor in deciding to stop, question, take enforcement action, arrest, or search the individual.” The motorcycle anti-profiling legislation passed unanimously 50

PROMOTE USE OF E15 GAS

Despite controversy over the proliferation of E15 fuel, which is not approved for use by any motorcycle manufacturer and can invalidate warranties, Congress will consider a bill to expand existing infrastructure utilized in the “process of dispensing fuel containing covered renewable or alternative energy.” HR 4673, the “Renewable Fuel Utilization, Expansion, and Leadership Act” (REFUEL Act) would provide federal grant money to subsidize the installation of blender pumps and equipment necessary to expand the availability of E15 gasoline, a fuel blend containing 15% ethanol. The measure directly conflicts with earlier Congressional action taken in the FARM bill to prohibit funding for ethanol blender pumps, in an effort to restrict E15 expansion in the U.S. marketplace.

A bill in Georgia modifies their existing handlebar height law to allow for taller bars. House Bill 166, the “Motorcycle Mobility Safety Act,” passed the state Senate by a vote of 45-4 after clearing the House unanimously 166-0, and is headed to Governor Nathan Deal for signature. The new law increases the maximum measured height of a motorcycle’s handlebars from 15 inches above the seat to 25 inches. Discriminatory in nature, handlebar height laws were never about rider safety, and most were adopted by states in the sixties to give law enforcement a tool for pulling over bikers on choppers.

CALIFORNIA CONSIDERS TRAFFIC SCHOOL FOR MOTORCYCLISTS

Traffic violators in California have long enjoyed the option of completing an authorized “Traffic Violator School” in lieu of adjudicating certain minor vehicle code infractions, thereby avoiding “points” against their driving record and dismissing the citation. These traffic schools originated in California, where violators have a choice of approved defensive driving courses, everything from comedy to singles and even online courses, but nothing for motorcycle riders even if their ticket was on a bike. Now, Assembly Bill 1932 would “authorize a person who is ordered or permitted to complete a course of instruction at a licensed traffic violator school as a result of an offense committed while operating a motorcycle to instead complete an advanced-level motorcyclist safety training course.” The bill authorizes the Commissioner of the California Highway Patrol to adopt standards for course content, contact hours, curriculum, instructor training and testing, and instructional quality control for the advanced-level motorcyclist safety training course. FEDS RESUME CONTROVERSIAL ASSET SEIZURE PROGRAM Bikers have become all too familiar with the law enforcement tactic of asset seizure, with club patches and trademarks coming under fire in recent years, and now the Justice Department has just announced that it is resuming the controversial practice that allows local police departments to funnel a large portion of assets seized from citizens into their own coffers under federal law. Asset forfeiture is a contentious practice that lets police seize and keep cash and property from people who are never convicted - and in many cases, never charged - with wrongdoing. The “equitable-sharing” program gives police the option of prosecuting asset forfeiture cases under federal instead of state law. Federal forfeiture policies are more permissive than many state policies, allowing police to keep up to 80% of assets they seize. The Justice Department had suspended payments under this program back in December due to budget cuts included in last year’s spending bill, raising hopes the department was reining in the practice, but law enforcement groups recently rallied members of Congress to call on the Justice Department to restore the payments. Reports have found that the use of the practice has exploded in recent years, prompting concern that police may be motivated more by profit and less by justice. In 2014, federal authorities seized over $5 billion in assets. QUOTABLE QUOTE: “News is the first rough draft of history.” ~ Philip L. Graham (1915-63), journalist & newspaper publisher
