“THE INCIDENTALS” The modern day Christians have gotten too focused on “The Incidentals” of our Christian faith, some have lost sight of “The Big Picture,” the divine purpose. When Jesus walked the earth He did many miraculous miracles, but they were all “The Incidentals” of His ministry, His divine purpose was to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind that was “The Big Picture.” Yes He healed the sick, the blind saw, the lame walked, the devils were cast out, and the dead were raised, He even paid the disciple’s taxes with money found in the mouth of a fish. The people of that day are no different than people of today, we still seek Jesus for “The Incidentals.” We all want to be healed, delivered and prosper, but are we more interested in the “Promises” or the “Promiser?” Matt.16:21-23 “From that time forth began Jesus to show unto His disciples, how He must go and suffer many things of the elders, and chief priest and scribes, and be killed. Then Peter took him and began to rebuke Him saying, be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. But He turned and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me Satan.” Peter had good intentions but he like the other disciples were only interested in “The Incidentals” that was available to them at that time, they had become a distraction from God’s divine purpose, “The Big Picture.” They wanted to reduce Jesus down to the preliminary things He was doing because it benefited them at that time in their own lives. Sometimes we today are guilty of the same thing, we get so concern about “The Incidentals,” the healings, the protection, the deliverance from addictions, the prosperity, the publicity, and the respect, that we completely forget about our own divine purpose that God has called us to. All these “Incidentals” were just to prove His authority and that He was the Son of God that came to redeem us back to Him. NOVEMBER 2016
But because we are so caught up in “The Incidentals” we are easily lead astray by religious pimps and spiritual con-arts. Too many religions, ministers and church members get caught up in “The Incidentals” of our faith. Don’t misunderstand me, God wants us to have these “Incidentals,” He just doesn’t want them to have us! If all we ever focus on is “what can God do for us,” then we have missed “The Big Picture,” our divine purpose. Remember what Jesus said in Matt.26:39 “Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me (the crucifixion): nevertheless not as I will, but thy will be done.” God is not our sugar daddy nor is He our bondsman to bail us out of the trouble we get ourselves into. Remember that everything you have ever gone through, good or bad has really been “preparation for your divine purpose,” and God “will supply all your needs.” Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

NOVEMBER 2016
Death Valley National Park Death Valley National Park is located on the southeastern border of California, with a small portion in Nevada. As it covers 5,310 square miles and is 6 to 60 miles wide and 140 miles north to south, twice the size of Delaware, it cannot be seen in one day. If you go on a motorcycle during the summer, you may want to rent a jeep, available in the park, as when we were there, the high temperature was 126 degrees. Also, there are over 800 miles of off-roads available. Be advised that gasoline stations are very limited and charge a large premium. Death Valley got its name from pioneers who were impatient and left Capt. Jefferson Hunt’s wagon train and took a short cut near Enterprise, Utah. After wandering through the desert, for two months, they sent 2 young boys for help. 26 days later they returned empty handed. The group decided to leave their belongings, burn their wagons to cook some of their oxen and travel on foot. They finally found Sierra Mountains, then Walker’s Pass, and eventually civilization. As in-park lodging is difficult to book, we chose to stay in Lone Pine, the nearest town on the western side of the park. Still, it was 90 miles from the park. Lone Pine is adjacent to the Inyo National Forest, home to the oldest living trees, Bristlecone Pines, some of which exceed 5,000 years in age.
of the drive is Artist’s Pallet, where rock deposits are green, yellow, blue and pink. The Devil’s Golf Course consists of the remnants of the last large lake in the area, which dried up around 2,000 years ago. The ground looks like a coral reef, with white salt piles standing up. Racetrack Playa is a weird place, where boulders move and leave tracks in the flat mud. Scientists disagree as to the cause of the movement. In September, some idiot drove a vehicle in this area, leaving deep tracks. A suspect is being sought and will find themselves in a deep pile of something other than mud or salt!
While we didn’t see all of the park, we did hit the high points. One must visit is the lowest point in North America, Badwater Basin. This Basin is 282 feet below sea level (as pointed out by a sea level marking on the canyon wall. Thousands of years ago, this was a 30 foot deep lake, whereas today it shrinks to a small pond, four times saltier than the ocean.
The Harmony Borax Works was in production from 18831888. The factory and one of the 20 mule team wagons are on display. It took the mule teams 30 days, round trip, to haul the borax 165 miles to the railroad in Mojave.
Near Badwater Basin is Artist’s Drive, a nine mile one way loop through ravines and colorful rock formations. The highlight

Bullet Points
YOUR 2ND AMENDMENT RIGHTS ARE IN JEOPARDY Good morning, friends. Today, as I write this Bullet Points article, the general election is heading into its final stretch. We have all heard the political rhetoric being thrown around by Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. In my 52 years, I’ve witnessed plenty of mudslinging during presidential elections, but this may be the worst. Revelations of lewd comments, fainting spells, personal email servers and failures of the FBI director are driving me a bit crazy. But the choices are clear. The differences between our two presidential candidates are as stark as black and white. One candidate, Donald J. Trump, received the earliest presidential endorsement from the National Rifle Association in modern history. The other candidate, Hillary Clinton, has vowed to use her pen to restrict our 2nd Amendment rights if she could not get “common sense” gun reform laws passed by congress. Let’s take a look at what each candidates’ positions are on the 2nd Amendment: Hillary Rodham Clinton (taken from her campaign website): 1. 2.
3.
Expand Background Checks to more gun sales – including closing the gun show and internet sales loopholes – and strengthen the background check system by getting rid of the so called “Charleston Loophole.” Take on the gun lobby by removing the industry’s sweeping legal protection for illegal and irresponsible actions (which makes it almost impossible for people to hold them accountable), and revoking licenses from dealers who break the law. Keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers, other violent criminals, and the severely mentally ill by supporting laws that stop domestic abusers from buying and owning guns, making it a Federal crime for someone to intentionally buy a gun for a person prohibited from owning one, and closing the loopholes that allow people suffering from severe mental illness to purchase and own guns. She will also support work to keep military-style assault weapons off our streets.
Donald J. Trump (taken from his campaign website): 4. Defend the Second Amendment of our Constitution. The right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed upon. Period. 5. Nominate United States Supreme Court justices that will abide by the rule of the law and the Constitution of the United States that includes upholding the Second Amendment. 6. Enforce the laws on the books. We need to get serious about prosecuting violent criminals. 7. Expand and bring back programs like Project Exile and get gang members and drug dealers off the street. 8. Empower law-abiding gun owners to protect themselves. 9. Fix our broken mental health system. 10. Defend the rights of law-abiding gun owners: 11. Military bases and recruiting centers – to have a strong military, we need to allow them to defend themselves. 12. National right to carry – should be legal in all 50 states 13. Background checks – we need to fix the system we have and make it
NOVEMBER 2016
work as intended. What we don’t need to do is expand a broken system. 14. Guns and magazine bans – the government has no business dictating what types of firearms are good, honest people are allowed to own (Sic) What Hillary is not telling us: 15. There are no gun show and internet sale loopholes. Firearms purchased online, and at gun shows, are sold through a FFL and go through the same background check system which sales at gun dealers go through (NICS). 16. She will appoint United States Supreme Court justices that believe the U.S. Constitution is a “living, breathing document,” and open to interpretation – that the 2nd Amendment only applies to the militia. 17. Take on the gun lobby – this is Hillary Speak for silencing the National Rifle Association. The NRA has never provided aid to prevent criminals from being prosecuted and advocated for violent people having access to firearms. The NRA has tirelessly worked on behalf of law abiding citizens – protecting our rights to keep and bear arms. 18. As for keeping guns out of the hands of domestic abusers, violent criminals and the mentally ill, the laws are already on the books. States are required to provide mental commitments to the Federal background check system today (many don’t), and those convicted of violent crimes are already identified in the NICS background check system – preventing them from passing the background check. 19. Closing the Charleston Loophole – This is a play on your emotions. There is no “Charleston Loophole.” What she is referring to IS the law. If the NICS system does not come back with a “Proceed” or “Denied” response, within three business days, the FFL can transfer the gun to the purchaser. This is what happened in Charleston. While there may have been a clerical error at the FBI, Dylan Roof was legally able to purchase a firearm after waiting three business days. And it should be worth noting, that over the past eight years, under Barack Obama, the prosecution rate of people caught in straw purchase crimes, lying on background check forms and violent criminals trying to purchase guns are at their lowest point since the Brady Bill was passed during Bill Clinton’s term. Donald Trump is correct: Enforce the laws on the books. Four years, or eight years, of a Donald Trump presidency will protect your 2nd Amendment rights. Four years, or eight years, of a Hillary Clinton presidency will erode the rights our Founding Fathers provided us with the passage of the Bill of Rights. Hilary has promised that “common sense” gun reforms she cannot get through congress, will be enact via the pen (A.K.A. as executive orders). Is this what you want? Get out and vote. Don’t let the likes of CNN, MSNBC and CBS news let you believe that Hillary can’t be beat. She can be. But only if likeminded individuals, like us, turn out at the polls. Until next month, ride as much as you can, and keep the shiny side up! 2017 H-D Milwaukee Eight Test Ride
Thunder Roads Tennessee Since 1903 and for 113 model years the Harley-Davidson Motor Company has only produced 8 “Big Twin” engines, (not counting scouts, sportsters, XR’s, and V-Rods) so when the 9th new engine was unveiled on the 114th model year touring bikes it was kind of a big deal. The Milwaukee Eight may have been the worst kept secret in Motor Company History. There was a lot of talk about it and some “leaked” photos floating around before the official unveiling at the annual H-D dealers meeting in Boston this year. We received several invitations to come and ride the new bikes for this evaluation, but Jason Altenburg at Appleton Harley-Davidson in Clarksville called us while he was still in Boston to invite us up to take a test ride, so we went with the first invite. Jason said he would wait until I could get up there to ride one so we would both be trying the 17’s for the first time. Even though we couldn’t get together until early October, he kept his word and fought the temptation and waited. We started out with me on a Street Glide and him on a Road Glide (we won’t get into the batwing vs sharknose argument here) and swapped bikes halfway through. I currently ride a 14 Ultra Limited, so I’m used to all of the improvements that Project Rushmore brought to the touring line in 14, so the only real differences from my bike to the 17’s are the new motor, and redesigned transmission, primary and new suspension. The new motor is a 107 (114 in the CVO’s) cubic inch single cam with 4 valves per cylinder. There are a lot of noticeable differences from the moment you hit the start button, first, it starts quicker and without any slowdowns or kickbacks thanks to a new 1.6 kw starter, and when it lights off the most prominent sound is the exhaust note. There is very little mechanical noise from the engine, gone is most of the rocker box rattle and clatter of pushrods, rockers, and valves, and because the engine is so much quieter they were able to make the exhaust louder and still keep the EPA sound police happy. When it settles down 12
to idle I noticed it was idling at a lot lower rpm, like back in the shovel and evo days when I would set my idle so low my lights would dim when I stopped but it sounded soooo cool. A new stator with a 50% increase in power keeps all of the electronics happy while the new engine idles at about 850 rpm. Throttle response is a little quicker, but I suspect this is more of an EFI mapping thing because that’s easily done on the Twin Cams with the help of a tuner. The next thing I noticed was it’s much smoother, because the motor is rubber mounted AND counterbalanced there is a claimed 75% reduction in vibration. Now I may be a bit of a Luddite, but that’s one thing I’m not sure if I like about the new motors, I like a little shake at idle but what do I know, I also said I’d never have a windshield or a radio and I’d never get used to starting a bike without pulling out the choke either. When you pick it up off the kickstand, out of habit you put your left leg out further than your right and assume the awkward Harley stance, but wait, now you can tuck you left leg up as tight as your right because the huge domed primary cover has all but disappeared, it makes the bike seem thinner to the point that my knees were bent a little more and I noticed how wide the nose of the seat is. The thinner primary and slipper, AKA “slip and assist” clutch first appeared on the “Low” line

of touring bikes a couple of years ago, but it’s the first time I’d ridden one with it. Then came the biggest shock, I pulled the clutch in and dropped it into first…or did I, I think I did, so I let out the clutch and feel that it’s in gear but I didn’t hear the familiar clunk, so I put it in neutral and did it again, yep, the clunk is gone. If you are paying attention you can feel it go into gear with your foot but that’s about it. It’s not silent, but it’s so much quieter that you don’t notice the sound. The clutch has a little different feel at the lever but it’s a good different. Not sure exactly what it is but it was different enough that I mentioned it before we left. We took a ride and the motor feels great, it pulls hard from anywhere (even from less than 1500 RPM’s) and it feels stronger than my twin cooled 103 with pipes, an air cleaner and a tune. Put it in 6th gear at 50mph, (I never put my bike in 6th until I’m over 65) and it pulls right out of it without lugging or complaining at all. I can’t recommend riding it that way, but
NOVEMBER 2016
I had to try. We headed down Hwy. 12 for the fast sweepers and hills because while the motor is the big news, I wanted to try the suspension. On my last few bikes I’ve spent a lot of money on aftermarket suspension, I think those days are over. You heard it here first, Harley Davidson has finally put good suspension on their touring bikes! In the rear there are coil-over emulsion style shocks with really good damping and the best part is they have a hydraulic preload adjuster, which means you just turn a knob to adjust preload if you change from solo to 2 up or load up for a trip or you can leave it alone and never have to adjust it again and if you think you have them on your bike now because you have H-D premium shocks you don’t. These are new shocks with better damping and 30% more preload adjustment. They feel as good if not better than the $900 aftermarket shocks on my bike. The front forks have Showa’s new Dual Bending Valve technology, it’s not a new idea, in fact it’s a cartridge emulator but by building the fork’s entire damping system around it and not adding it to what’s already there, it feels better than any emulator I’ve ever used and as good as some cartridge forks. Overall I came away impressed, I really liked the Rushmore improvements in 14, and the new motor and suspension have made a great bike even better. What you should take away from this review is yes, they are better, and different enough that even if you have a 14-16 touring bike you should at least go ride one and see for yourself.

BOSWELL’S GRILL by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley
Did you know that in the whole United States there are only two grills inside Harley Davidson dealerships? One of those was inspired by Betsey Boswell of Boswell’s Harley Davidson, 401Fessler’s Lane, Nashville, TN 37210, Ph# 615-2426067 x3005. Boswell’s Harley Davidson was established in 1950 and has been a mainstay dealer in Tennessee. It’s not surprising that this family founded dealership would lead the way and establish a high quality grill inside to go the extra mile in building a family oriented and full service customer experience. The grill was founded in 1998 and is sneaking up on its 20 year anniversary. Maybe they’ll come out with a pin for burgers eaten to keep up with the Harley miles ridden program. We can only hope!! Grill manager Diane Rutherford is the dynamo who keeps the grill spotless and the food very high quality. Diane grew up on a farm and has been cooking since she was big enough to stand on a chair at the stove. Like many of America’s greatest cooks she learned her cooking skills by watching her mother and grandmother. While she has had other lines of work, cooking has always been her special gift. She came to work for Boswells in sales but Kyle Boswell leaned about her expertise in cooking and kept asking her for tips and how she would do things in the grill. It didn’t take long for the Boswells to woo her into taking over the grill. She’s been there a little over two years and the grill has become known for food made from fresh ingredients that are handmade. Just about everything is made from scratch with Diane’s special touch for great flavor and quality. What else would you expect from a Harley dealer? The menu item names are all related to Harley’s and motorcycle terms. They have great burgers, kielbasa, chicken, catfish, club sandwiches, Philly cheesesteak, chili and soups. I love the homemade onion rings with a Sportster Custom ½ lbs burger with all the fixins. All of the plates are a real meal. You won’t leave hungry. One thing most folks don’t know is that the grill opens at 8am and serves breakfast until 10am when it starts lunch and serves until 2:30 in the afternoon. It’s great to bring your bike in for an oil change and eat breakfast while you wait. If you call ahead Diane will make you chocolate gravy for your biscuits. Now that’s down home. Everyone in the grill is friendly and quick to take care of you. 24
Say hello to Sparkle, one of the special people who have been with the grill for the past 17 years. The grill is decorated in Boswell’s and Harley antiques and memorabilia. It’s a great experience. First time guests get a free dish of homemade banana pudding. The grill makes the food for all of Boswell’s special events and parties and is available for parties and anniversaries. If you want a unique Harley oriented or family event, the Boswell’s grill is the place. Dripping special sauce on your shirt is a great excuse to stop in the clothing store on your way out for a new Harley shirt. You can also pet Misty, the store’s Border collie mascot. Skip the fast food and hit the grill. Tell them Bulldog sent you. If you are out riding to eat and see me please come up and tell me your favorite places to go when you’re hungry and thirsty. “Will Ride to Eat” is an ongoing article in Thunder Roads® Magazine of Tennessee and we want to put the spotlight on the great history and variety of Tennessee’s biker friendly establishments.

CHAMPAGNE BASTED...... ORANGE, LEMON & PARSLEY TURKEY
I prepared this recipe a couple years ago, using a large turkey breast only, instead of the entire bird, but it was simple & scrumptious. The secret is to baste baby baste......4 times per hour! 1 Turkey; thawed - (14 to 16 lbs.) 1 Stick Real Butter; softened 1 tsp. Celery Salt Salt & Pepper to Taste 2 Large Whole Oranges; zested & Cut In Fourths 2 Large Whole Lemons; zested & Cut In Half 1 Spice Jar of Orange Peel Seasoning 2 Cups of Ballatore’ Sparking Wine (very inexpensive) 2 Medium Onions; chopped 1 Bunch of Fresh Parsley; Minced 1 Cup of Beef Stock 1/2 tsp. Dried Thyme 1/2 tsp. Produce Seasoning 1/2 tsp. Dried Marjoram Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Get a large, high-sided roasting pan. Spray w/ non-stick butter spray heavily and all up sides and coat bottom well. Next, clean out cavity of bird and pat dry w/ paper towels really good. Take real, softened butter, celery salt, salt & pepper and orange and lemon zest (save some zest for basting sauce) from fruits and form a paste and rub all over entire bird generously and inside cavity also. Place bird in roasting pan. Place cut oranges & lemons inside the cavity, squeezing a bit of juice out of them into cavity as you do. Next, rub bird down all over the outside with Orange Peel spice; cover that bird up with orange spice! Place breast side up in pan and bake for 3 to 3-1/2 hours tented with foil. In large bowl combine the Ballatore’, onions, parsley, beef stock, zests, thyme and marjoram; pour half into roasting pan and keep half for basting. Bake for 3 hours longer; remember to baste 4 times per hour while tented and the last hour of cooking, when you remove the tent. Be sure and tuck wings down under turkey as these burn easily. Remember.....Baste! Baste! Baste! Remove bird from pan and let sit for 20 mins. after removing from oven so that all juices go back into meat. For authentic turkey gravy, mix a good brand bottle of turkey gravy with pan drippings, in the same roasting pan and then pour into gravy boat. Now, you‘ve got a phenomenal bird & gravy you’ll be proud to serve your Family and it’s totally unique fruity flavor compliments the turkey flavor superbly.

Bike of the Month
2008 Harley-Davidson Softail Deluxe Congratulations to Mark Gates on winning our monthly Bike Contest on Facebook!
Hi!! My name is Mark Gates, and I am the proud owner of “Lux”, a 2008 Harley Davidson Softail Deluxe. I purchased it stock about 2 1/2 years, with the exception of some motor work. Since owning it, I have made it my own by combining “old school” and “new school”. Believe it or not, it is actually the stock, factory paint job. The paint scheme is called Golden Glow/Black Glow, and was only produced in April and May of 2008. Only a handful of Deluxes’ received this paint. In certain angles you can see brown and green flake when the sun hits it just right. The list of mods I have done to this bike are as follows. 21” 80 spoke front wheel. Shotgun Shock Air Suspension in the rear. Burly Beach Bars. Lowered 2” in the front. A LOT of chrome add-ons. 103” motor kit. 255 Screamin’ Eagle cams, and a Cobra FI2000R fuel programmer. Lux has been in quite a few motorcycle shows and has done very well in them. Our highlight was winning the SHOWDOG award, where we participated in the International Motorcycle Show in Chicago this past year. I really do enjoy riding this bike every chance I get, despite people saying it’s a “trailer queen”. If you are ever at a local bike night in Northwest Indiana, you just might see us there!! And yes, I do plan on keeping this bike forever! If you have a cool custom bike you would like to have featured in our magazine, enter it in our monthly contest by submitting a pic of your bike to ThunderRoadsTn@gmail.com NOVEMBER 2016

One day a father gets out of work and on his way home he suddenly remembers that it’s his daughter’s birthday. He pulls over to a Toy Shop and asks the sales person, ‘How much for one of those Barbie’s in the display window?’ The salesperson answers, ‘Which one do you mean, sir? We have: Work Out Barbie for $19.95, Shopping Barbie for $19.95, Beach Barbie for $19.95, Disco Barbie for $19.95, Ballerina Barbie for $19.95, Astronaut Barbie for $19.95, Skater Barbie for $19.95, and the most popular; Divorced Barbie for $299.95’. The amazed father yells: ‘It’s how much?! Why is the Divorced Barbie $299.95 and the others only $19.95?’ The annoyed salesperson rolls her eyes, sighs, and answers: ‘Sir..., Divorced Barbie comes with: Ken’s Audi A-8, Ken’s Malibu Beach house, Ken’s Danzi Z33 Race Boat, Ken’s Designer Furniture, Ken’s Screamin’-Meanie Platinum Computer, one of Ken’s Best-Looking Friends, and a custom key chain made with Ken’s Balls. --------------------------------------------------------------------So I finally landed a job as a Smart-Mart greeter, which is a good find for many retirees, unfortunately I lasted less than a day. About two hours into my first day on the job a very loud, unattractive, mean-acting woman walked into the store with her two kids, yelling obscenities at them all the way through the entrance. Per my greeter training manual I said pleasantly, “Good morning and welcome to Smart-Mart.” “Nice children you have there. Are they twins?” The hateful woman stopped yelling long enough to say, “Hell no, they aint twins. The oldest one is 9, and the other one is 7. Why the hell would you think they’re twins? Do you need glasses, or are you just plain stupid?” So I replied, “I’m neither in need of glasses nor stupid, madam. I just literally could not believe someone actually slept with you twice. Have a good day and thank you for shopping at SmartMart.” My Supervisor said I probably wasn’t cut out for this line of work. --------------------------------------------------------------Letter to a Men’s Helpline... Hi Bob: I really need your advice on a serious problem: I have suspected for some time now that my wife has been cheating on me. The usual signs: if the phone rings and I answer, the caller hangs up; she goes out with the girls a lot. I try to stay awake to look out for her when she comes home but I usually fall asleep. Anyways, last night about midnight I hid in the shed next to my Harley. When she came home she got out of someone’s car buttoning her blouse, then she took her panties out of her purse and slipped them on. It was at that moment crouched behind the Harley that I noticed a hairline crack in the swing arm. Is that something I can weld or do I need to replace the whole swing arm? 28
Two bikers; Buster and Bodie rode into a gas station in Kentucky for a fill-up because they heard about a contest being offered by the station to patrons who purchased a full tank of gas. When they went inside to pay, the guys asked the attendant about the contest. “If you win, you’re entitled to free sex” said the attendant. “How do we enter?” asked Buster. “Well, I’m thinking of a number between 1 and 10, if you guess right, you win free sex.” “OK. I guess 7,” said Bodie. “Sorry, I was thinking of 8,” replied the attendant. The next week, the two buddies go back to the same station to get gas. When they went inside to pay, Buster asked the attendant if the contest was still going on. “Sure,” replied the attendant. “I’m thinking of a number between 1 and 10, if you guess right you win free sex.” “2” said Buster. “Sorry, I was thinking of 3,” replied the attendant. “Y’all come back soon and try again.” As they walked back to their bikes, Bodie said to Buster, “You know, I’m beginning to think this contest is rigged.” “No way,” replied Buster. “My wife won three times last week.” --------------------------------------------------------------A biker’s greatest achievement was his brood of six kids. He was so proud that he continually called his wife: “Mother of Six”, which pissed her off to no end. But he kept referring to her as “Mother of Six” no matter where they went. At end of a poker run, he shouted across the bar, “Hey, “Mother of Six”, you ready to go home?” His irritated wife screamed back: “Anytime you’re ready, “Father of Four”!” --------------------------------------------------------------I will never hear church bells ringing again without smiling. Upon hearing that her elderly grandfather had just passed away, Katie went straight to her grandparent’s house to visit with her 95-year-old grandmother and comfort her. When she asked how her grandfather had passed away, her grandmother replied in her sweet, soft voice, “He had a heart attack while we were making love on Sunday morning, dear”. Horrified, Katie told her grandmother that 2 people nearly 100 years old having sex would surely be asking for trouble. “Oh, no, my dear”, replied granny. Many years ago, realizing our advanced age, we figured out the best time to make love was when the church bells would start to ring. It was the perfect rhythm. Nice and slow and even. Nothing too strenuous.... simply in on the ding and out on the dong. She paused to wipe away a tear and looked up at Katie, “He’d still be alive if that f***ing ice cream truck hadn’t come along!”.

by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley As I continue to work for our government to account for the 83,000 service members listed as missing in action since World War II I am continuously asked if there are still American service members who were taken Prisoner of War (POW) who are still alive. Let me assure you there are still live Americans being held against their will by countries we have been at war with in the past. Did you know that from 1954 to 1976, after France paid Vietnam an unspecified amount of money to” maintain French Cemeteries” that the Communists released 1000 to 1500 Legionnaires—alive—sending them home in small groups at irregular times over a 22 year period. In April 1973, Laotian Communist forces declared they were holding more than 100 American POWs. Nine days later the U.S. Government responded by declaring all POWs Dead without even talking to the Laotians! On 25 June 1981, DIA Director Eugene Tighe testified before the House Sub-committee on Asian/Pacific Affairs that live American POWs remain in Southeast Asia. 7 December 1984, the Washington Times reported that POW Bobby Garwood, released by Vietnam in 1979, saw up to 70 live captive Americans long after the Vietnam War ended. 28 June 1985, Washington Times reported DIA Director testified Hanoi is still holding 50 to 60 live American POWs. 15 October 1985, The Wall Street Journal reported that National Security Advisor Robert McFarlane says live American POWs remain in S.E. Asia. 19 August 1986, the Wall Street Journal reported the White House knew in 1981 Vietnam wanted to sell 57 live POWs for $4 billion and ignored it. 30 September 1986, the New York Times reported a Pentagon panel estimates up to 100 live American POWs are held in Vietnam alone. 7 October 1986, CIA Director William Casey said: “Look, the nation knows they (the POWs) are there—everybody knows they are there but there’s no groundswell of support for getting them out. Certainly you are not suggesting we pay for them, surely not saying we could do anything like that with no public support,”
NOVEMBER 2016
January 1988, a cable from the Joint Casualty Resolution Center in Thailand stated that during General Vessey’s visit to Hanoi, “The Vietnamese people were prepared to turn over 7 or 8 live American POWs if Vessey told them what they wanted to hear. The prospective returnees were allegedly held in a location on the Lao side of the border.” From then until today there continue to be live sighting reports, evidence of American POWs still being held captive, government investigations and a dismal failure by our government to take any steps to bring back a single live prisoner of war. Our government abandoned about 23,000 American POWs that Russia kept at the end of WWII as insurance the allies would not invade Russia after the fall of Germany. They never came home. North Korea kept about 8,000 American POWs after the cease fire was agreed to in 1954. They have never come home. There are live sightings of American POWs that continue to come out of North Korea from foreign workers and defectors who escape to freedom. There are rumors that as many as 300 prisoners from the Vietnam War were transferred to North Korea in the mid 1990’s to allow John McCain and John Kerry to establish economic relations with Vietnam. CIA Director William Casey in his 1986 moment of honesty truly stated our governments unspoken policy towards American service members held captive by foreign governments. Without a groundswell of public support the government won’t lift a finger to bring back a live POW. This is the result of a purposelydumbed down population and a government made up of professional politicians who are only interested in getting re-elected and holding on to power. It’s not just those who put their lives on the line to defend our nation and freedoms who suffer, it is all of us. Our nation was founded on liberty, justice and freedom based on the public holding power over government. Today our government holds power over us and it’s getting worse. We need a change. Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. Nashville Bike Week
12 Month Countdown Party Thunder Roads Tennessee
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably already heard a little about Nashville Bike Week 2017. The newest 10 day motorcycle rally in the country and it’s going to be right in our backyard. Next September at Loretta Lynn Ranch, thousands of bikers will be coming to Tennessee from all over the country and the world to ride our great roads, visit our stores and establishments and listen to our music, lots and lots of music. At the ranch, the vendors will be set

up, and there will be several stages with music from noon until late at night. Rally goers will be able to go on led rides, self-guided mapped rides, or just go ride. At the Ranch they will camp, be able to fish, rent tubes or canoes to float in the creek, tour all of Loretta’s museums and shops, take a ride in a jet boat or a helicopter or a hot air balloon. There will be flat track racing, dirt drags, stunt shows, bike shows and all kinds of excitement with something for everyone. So to kick off the one year countdown, the promoters decided to throw a huge free 2 day party to give everyone a small taste

of what’s to come. The promoters told us the stage brought in for the countdown party was about like the “B” stage that will be at the ranch, the “B” Stage is where you will hear up and coming acts throughout the day but the main “A” stage will be a massive one with 2 huge screens so everyone can see. The countdown party was free to anyone that wanted to come but the promotors spared no expense. First they brought in vendors and had displays, even the NHRA Nitro Harley that is sponsored by Nashville Bike Week was there. The Tennessee Titans Cheerleaders were there with T-Rac, Gibson Guitars sent 2 of their tour busses and there were a couple of live radio remotes as well. They also brought in Jack Schit to emcee, Jack is a very funny guy and he’s hosted bike rallies all over the country, but he had help, Tayla Lynn, Granddaughter of Loretta, and a great singer herself was hosting as well, just as they both will be at the Ranch next year. Friday opened with Mudbone followed by Kyle Wilson and was headlined by The Davisson Brothers Band. The Davisson Brothers are a great up and coming super high energy band from West Virginia and they performed some covers along with their original songs. Saturday the rains came, but the show went on, several bikes left out at 8am to go on a led ride and several others used provided maps to ride themselves. The music kicked off again at noon with Mudbone, and Kyle Wilson starting it off, then Charlie Bonnett III and the Rebel Ways Band, and Dallas Moore played until 6pm, then as the rain finally stopped they gave away lots of prizes including guitars signed by Loretta Lynn herself and a Harley Davidson Motorcycle, there was also a bikini contest and the winner got $1000. Saturday night Thee Rock and Roll Residency brought the house down, then a fire performance by Torch lit things up and The Moonshine Bandits closed the show with full pyrotechnics and a 15 minute fireworks show. The production was great, the hosts were hilarious, the bands were incredible and the show was huge. As Jack Schit said many times, “I’ve been to a whole lot of biker events and this was a first class no expense spared show”. If that was the free countdown party we can’t wait until the real rally happens next year, it’s going to be unbelievable!

Another traditional feature is also missing: a control panel. Instead, helmetless riders will wear a visor that acts as a smart display, although such information would not be needed all the time because the vehicle is equipped with self-driving technology and can sense the road ahead and react so that it theoretically can’t get into accidents.

The futuristic motorcycle is also “zero emissions,” because BMW said it believes the future of transportation is electric.
Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) ROAD TO ZERO MOTORCYCLES For decades, motorcycle rights advocates have warned the riding community that advances in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and the advent of autonomous (self-driving) vehicles could signal the end of motorcycles on public roadways. Indeed, “Vision Zero” has been under development primarily in Europe to remove human interaction from the operation of vehicles in public transit, therefore eliminating human error that results in traffic accidents…and since motorcycles require human operation they do not fit into the Vision Zero scenario. Now, the U.S. Department of Transportation has unveiled plans for a new initiative called “Road to Zero” in concert with other federal agencies and the National Safety Council with the lofty goal of eliminating all traffic-related fatalities by the year 2030, and although bicyclists and pedestrians are taken into account, their plan makes no specific mention of motorcycles. Citing increases in traffic deaths nationwide, accounting for more than 35,000 lives lost mostly due to human error and behaviors such as distracted and drowsy driving and driving under the influence, Road to Zero will focus on proactive vehicle safety, advances in automotive technology and cultivating human behavior. But the new federal safety initiative, announced October 5, 2016 completely ignores a significant portion of America’s road users, as Road to Zero apparently makes no accommodation for millions of motorcyclists vying to survive in an increasingly automated traffic mix. FUTURE MOTORCYCLES WON’T REQUIRE HELMETS BMW claims that motorcycles in the future will be so smart, it could eliminate the need for protective gear. To mark its 100th birthday, BMW recently unveiled a Motorrad Vision Next 100 concept motorcycle so advanced that the German auto and cycle-maker says riders won’t require a helmet because its selfbalancing system keeps the bike upright both in motion and even at a standstill. BMW touted the motorbike’s futuristic features, saying it would allow for riders of all skill levels to “enjoy the sensation of absolute freedom.” Since the Vision Next 100 will liberate riders from the need to wear a helmet and protective clothing, BMW says the rider can be in touch with his/her surroundings, which will mean ‘perfect synthesis between human and machine’. 34
The Vision Vehicle celebrated its world premiere in Los Angeles on October 11 at the “Iconic Impulses: The BMW Group Future Experience” exhibition, and the bike was developed to address mobility issues some three decades down the road: “A time when mobility is yet more diverse and interconnected; a time when digitalization takes on a shape which we today perceive to be surreal; a time when motorcycling becomes an analogue and at the same time extraordinarily emotional experience.” A HELMET THAT CALLS FOR HELP We’ve previously reported that BMW is planning to introduce an automatic system to call emergency services installed on some of its motorcycles next year (an “SOS” button), but now a Thai innovation is looking to achieve similar results from a newlydesigned helmet. While still under development, the HELPMET concept is to automatically call medics only if it’s subjected to impacts hard enough to result in unconsciousness. It incorporates the basics of a smartphone, including a SIM card, GPS, and a connection to the phone network, as well as impact sensors and a rechargeable battery. The system is only set off after impacts of 95g or higher, so accidental knocks or even a light crash shouldn’t have ambulances appearing, but they will come looking if you’re lying unconscious in a ditch and they’ll have the precise coordinates to find you. Another element is that users of the system will be registered to a website where they can input various personal details, so not only will the HELPMET call emergency services, it will also be able to provide information about the rider’s name and address. It can also warn of allergies or pre-existing medical issues, the sort of information that could be the difference between life and death for an unconscious rider. NEW LAW IN FRANCE MANDATES RIDING GLOVES French law now requires that motorcycle riders wear gloves, and according to the website motofire.com, “Riders caught without hand protection will face a fine of $76 and have a point added to their license.” France already requires motorcyclists to carry a hi-viz reflective jacket or vest in case of a roadside emergency, and wear a helmet that displays “at least 18 square cm of reflective material,” a violation that carries a $152 fine. According to the report, France also requires riders to carry spare bulbs and an alcohol breath-testing kit, a rule widely ig-

nored since a violation carries no fine. Of course some riders have taken offense at the perceived violation of their civil liberties, and the FFMC, “Fédération Française des Motards en Colère (“French Federation of Angry Bikers”) has released this statement: “It’s not that we are against the gloves, the problem is that we’re forced to wear them under the threat of fines and losing points. There’s no lives at stake here, and if we don’t wear gloves then we aren’t threatening other people’s integrity.” May we have a show of hands on this matter? HISTORIC MOTORCYCLES MAY SOON REPOSE AT THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Historically significant motorcycles could soon be documented and have their details preserved for posterity in the Library of Congress. The National Historic Vehicle Register Act was introduced on September 22, 2016 by longtime motorcyclist U.S. Senator Gary Peters (D-MI), and is intended to help preserve the legacy of American cars and motorcycles and the vital role they play in American culture and history. If passed, the Act would authorize the U.S. Department of Interior to establish a federal register of historic vehicles to document and preserve records of American automotive and motorcycle history. The Historic Vehicle Association has been working with the Interior Department on the registry proposal since 2013, and the project would create a permanent archive of significant historic vehicles within the Library of Congress. The Library of Congress is the research library that officially serves the United States Congress and is considered the de facto national library of the United States. This method of documenting notable motorcycles in history was inspired by what’s been happening for nearly every other part of American society. Since the 1930s, the Department of the Interior has been working to document historic buildings and other historic sites throughout the United States. These efforts were bolstered by NOVEMBER 2016
the National Historic Preservation Act in 1966, and since then the National Register of Historic Places has grown to include a multitude of buildings, landmarks, ships, aircraft, etc. Although the National Historic Preservation Act made it possible for automobiles to be included in this database, none have yet been documented. The National Historic Vehicle Register will help document historic vehicles as they exist now, preserving their information for future generations. There are standards and qualifiers for a motorcycle to be registered. Vehicles must be connected to a significant person or event in American history, or have a unique design or rarity, to be eligible for the register. GERMANY WANTS TO BAN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES Germany’s top legislative body, the Bundesrat, has voted to ban all internal combustion engines by the year 2030. According to Der Spiegel news magazine in Hamburg, the legislation calls on the European Commission to “evaluate the recent tax and contribution practices of Member States on their effectiveness in promoting zero-emission mobility,” effectively asking for a ban on the lower level of tax on diesel fuel within the EU. It also calls on European vehicle manufacturers to “review the current practices of taxation and dues with regard to a stimulation of emission-free mobility.” “If the Paris agreement to curb climate-warming emissions is to be taken seriously, no new combustion engine cars should be allowed on roads after 2030,” said Greens party lawmaker Oliver Krischer. BMW Motorrad’s head of development Karl Viktor Schaller told Britain’s Motorcycle News publication, “It may be 10 or 15 years away, but urban traffic will be electric in the future. Maybe eventually electric vehicles will reach a range of 200km.” While the resolution is non-binding, it may not come to fruition, but the statement of intent carries strength, especially given that German regulations have historically shaped many EU regulations.

WATCHING FOR FALLEN ROCKS When I was a little girl my grandfather (I called him papaw) would tell me stories about Indian warriors, teepees, mountain men, mountain medicine and the different clans of the Eastern Tribe of the Cherokee Indians. As I got older, he told me about the Trail of Tears. I took every story to heart. Whether the story was true to the best of his memory or was a tall tale he spun to his granddaughter, I enjoyed them all and remember many of them. Papaw’s ancestry was Cherokee. With his brilliant white shiny hair, beaming dark brown eyes and always-tan skin, he brought life the stories as he told them to me. During those same years, my parents took me camping, a lot. I saw the same sign everywhere we traveled. The sign said: “Watch for Fallen Rocks”. My dad told me that sign indicated that a great chief named “Fallen Rocks” had traveled on this very road. Chief Fallen Rocks traveled all over the United States to gather knowledge to share with his tribe. A sign was placed beside the road to let everyone know he had traveled past that spot. Yes, I believed every word. Earlier this October, I was riding on some wonderful roads between Paint Bank, VA and the Shenandoah National Park. I was frequently reminded by signs to “Watch for Fallen Rocks”. I always smile to myself at these signs and you can probably imagine they remind me of my papaw and my dad. What I also saw were the many leaves on the road, walnuts, apples, deer, chipmunks, squirrels, snakes and I even saw a coyote. All of these things are hazards to a motorcycle rider. You probably will not see any signs warning you to watch for them like the “Watch for Fallen Rocks” sign. When you see things like leaves, walnuts or other obstacles
in the road, it is best to slow down before you reach them. Recent rain will make leaves more slippery and they will remain slippery even when the road appears dry. If you notice gravel, sand and/or dirt have collected on paved roads, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation recommends avoiding sudden changes in speed or direction. Should there be hazards in a curve, apply both brakes with extreme caution. Other tips recommended by the MSF include stopping before reaching large animals that are on or near the roadway. Do not kick at smaller animals, like a dog for example, as this can upset your balance on your motorcycle. If you’ve taken the Basic RiderCourse by MSF, you’ll remember the importance of SEE. To Search, Evaluate and Execute. nn Search – always looking as far ahead as possible and side-to-side, try to have 360 degree awareness nn Evaluate – keep a margin of safety and think about what could happen nn Execute – use smooth actions and adjust speed and position Always expect hazards to be on the road when you are traveling. Put a little extra thought and consideration into road conditions as you ride. Watch out for fallen rocks and all the other hazards that may accumulate on the roadways this fall. Riding safely starts with you! (Want to find a motorcycle safety course near you? Check the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s website at msf-usa.org or stop by your local motorcycle dealership.) Donna, along with being an avid riding enthusiast, is a MSF motorcycle safety coach for the state of TN, a HarleyDavidson Riding Academy coach, Motor Maid and member of HOG & Ladies of Hog.
