October was another crazy, busy, fun month for us but things are beginning to slow down just a bit since there aren’t as many events going on this month, but there are still plenty of things for us to do and be thankful for in the month of November. Here are some favorites to embrace during this month. Turkey Day, obviously. Thanksgiving, that day of the year where you get to give thanks with all of your friends/family and eat a whole bunch of turkey. What more could one ask for? How about the Leaves Changing Color, Football, Sweaters, No Shave November, Black Friday, Veteran’s Day, Cider, Pumpkin Everything, preparing for the Christmas Festivities, and let’s not forget the classic tradition of watching A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. With November being focused on Thanksgiving, it helps us all reflect on what and who we are thankful for this year. Just remember, there is always something to be thankful for no matter what the day or holiday is and we want you to know just how thankful we are for you, our readers and supporters, our correspondents, contributors and GDA, our friends and family, and our awesome advertisers. We are truly blessed to get up every day and work at a job that we are so passionate about and to get to meet so many wonderful people while we do what we love… thank you all for being a part of this amazing journey! It’s that time of year - temperatures are starting to come down and even though the riding may slow down some, I still love to get out on the bike and ride around just to look at all the beautiful colorful scenery, just have to wrap up a bit. We didn’t make it to Gatlinburg for our Anniversary to see the leaves changing colors because my back decided to go out on me. But before my back troubles started, we did get to spend some long overdue time with our daughter and son in-law in Canada, and finally got to hold that precious new grandbaby and we enjoyed every minute of it and can’t wait for them to come home for Christmas! Veterans Day, Nov. 11th is a day set aside to honor those who have served their country. This Veterans Day, all Veterans deserve our continued respect and our best wishes and we would like all Veterans to know that we deeply appreciate the sacrifices they have made in their lives to keep our country free. In case you haven’t heard the news… WE’RE GIVING AWAY VISA GIFT CARDS!!! All you have to do is tell us where you would like to pick up your FREE copy of Thunder Roads® Magazine Of Tennessee! If the place you recommend comes on-board with us as an advertiser, we will send you a VISA Gift Card as a “Thank You”! Just email us at thunderroadstn@gmail.com with the name and location of the business. Be sure to check out the Holiday Gift Buying Guide in this issue for some cool deals and giveaways and we’ll have some more for you in the December issue. As always, please support to our amazing advertisers that support us by shopping at their businesses when you’re in need of a product or service they provide. Here’s to another year of giving thanks for all our blessings. HAPPY THANKSGIVING from our family to yours! Ride Hard Live Free, Denise, Scott & Thunder Dawg

Pastor Ron Baptiste Founder of Covenant Confirmers Ministries Inc. www.covenantconfirmers.org Founder of Tennessee Biker Medical Clinic Inc. www.tennesseebikermedicalclinic.org Pastor Ron’s messages can now be downloaded off the website Leadership Skills can now be downloaded off the website
“STRANGE FIRE” Leviticus 10:1-11 “Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer thereon, and offered Strange Fire before the Lord, which He commanded them not. And there went out Fire from the Lord and devoured them, they died before the Lord.” To the modern day Christian this seems a little harsh. We must remember that God needed to bring structure to a nation, thus came laws, ordinances and penalties. God introduced the Tabernacle as a place to worship Him. This Tabernacle consisted of an Outer Court (daylight), Inner Court (candle light) and the Holy of Holies (Divine light), with very strict rules to enter. One basic rule was that the fire should come off of the Altar of sacrifice from the Inner Court, which is where the animals were burnt. This was the first time Nadab and Abihu were to enter the Holy of Holies. The Altar of sacrifice was a smelly place where flesh was burned. They didn’t want to go near it, so they decided to light their own fire. They presented before the Lord “Strange Fire” and the Divine fire of God devoured the human fire, along with these two priest. This is the same problem that the modern day Christian has today. We keep bringing God our “Strange Fire.” We must remember the parking lot of our churches represents the Outer Court, the lobby represents the Inner Court, and the sanctuary represents the Holy of Holies. When we enter into God’s House with anger, strife, jealously, gossip or lust, we are bringing to God our “Strange Fire.” When we drop our candy wrappers (trash) in the floor, place chewing gum under the seats, cut our fingernails leaving the waste on the floor, spill coffee and cokes, we are bringing to God our “Strange Fire.” The House of God is His Holy of Holies, not a movie theater. Under the Old Testament law, God would have killed us at the front door. Thank God we live under New Testament Grace. When we decide to go against God’s Word and institute our own ideas, we bring “Strange fire.” We don’t get to vote or have an opinion on what God really meant in His Word. He hasn’t changed His mind. We may not get devoured by fire today, but we are experiencing death to our country, Churches, marriages, families and communities. When we allow the world system to dictate to us how to operate the House of God, we are offing God “Strange Fire.” When God gives us instructions, He expects us to obey it, not debate it. It don’t matter how you feel, or how you think, He is God and we are not. The modern day Church has lost discipline and structure. Pastors have stopped Pastoring members and are November 2017
negotiating with them. The Church membership wonders why they’re not being healed, prospering, or delivered. It’s because God cannot bless disobedience. Lev.10:10 “And that ye may put difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean.” We have too many Christians that know the difference between right and wrong, but don’t know the difference between “holy and unholy, unclean and clean.” You can be saved but operate in unholy and unclean things. God said “I will be sanctified, I will be glorified.’ Either by obedience or judgement. It’s your choice. Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

Appleton H-D Motorcycle Mayhem
BUDDY AND GLEN MEMORIAL POKER RUN
By Scott High 65 years is a long time, but that’s how long the name Appleton has been on the sign in front of Clarksville’s Harley-Davidson Dealership. To celebrate their anniversary, every year they have the Buddy and Glen Memorial Poker Run to honor their founding fathers, but every 5 years they go all out and throw the Motorcycle Mayhem party. In 1952, Buddy and Glen Appleton opened their doors for business and as a testament to their legacy it is still family owned and several members of their family still work at the dealership today. Over the last 65 years a lot of people have been introduced to motorcycles and riding at Appleton Harley-Davidson and they have made a lot of motorcycle dreams come true. The 15th annual Buddy and Glen Memorial Poker Run is in memory of their founding fathers and to give back to and celebrate with their customers, with proceeds going to St Jude’s. After a great ride around the area this year’s winner won a $1,000 gift card. Prizes were also given to the youngest licensed rider in the crowd at 17, as well as the oldest who was 81, and the person with the oldest motorcycle purchased from Appleton was a 1955 Servi-Car which he had there that day, and the person in the crowd who had purchased the most motorcycles from Appleton had bought 13. There were live bands all day, speeches from the city official’s, vendors, food trucks, and over $12,000 in Giveaways including a new Harley Davidson

Motorcycle. Just to show how deep the Appleton family roots run through the shop, Owner Tia Suiter, granddaughter and great niece of the founders introduced Glen’s youngest daughter Glynnis who works in motorclothes to draw the lucky winning entry for the new motorcycle and his son Glen Jr, the sales manager, read the winners name. Walking around inside the shop they had several displays with old photos and memorabilia collected over 65 years, they lost some of it in 1999 when a tornado destroyed a lot of downtown Clarksville including Appleton’s old Kraft St Location but a lot of the history of the old shop is still there. They had a big turnout for their 65th anniversary and the party went into the night celebrating family, friends and their large riding community.

Bullet Points INDOOR GUN RANGE ETIQUETTE
E
very fall when the temperature starts to drop we start to do more things inside, and if you’ve been shooting outside at a controlled range, or at a safe place in the woods, you might want to go to an indoor range like the Bob Munden Indoor Range at Tennessee Gun Country to practice during the cold months. Every fall we like to bring up the subject of indoor shooting on our Bullet Points page and share some of the safety rules and etiquette that go along with it.
We’ll go over the basic rules that apply to most indoor ranges, but where ever you go to shoot, always know the rules specific to that range and abide by them. The rules are there to keep everyone safe and make range time fun for all. These are basic general safety rules that apply at most indoor ranges but if you’ve been shooting in the woods all summer, it’s a good idea to review. • Always keep your firearm pointed down range, even if it’s empty; if you bring your gun in a bag or case, turn the bag or case so that when you take the firearm out it’s pointing downrange. • If you rent a firearm, make sure the slide is locked back or the cylinder open when you return it to the counter so everyone can see at a glance that it’s unloaded and safe. Never leave your gun unattended. • Always keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot. These seem basic, but you may have developed bad habits if you haven’t been shooting inside or around other people. • Keep your firearm unloaded until you are ready to shoot, and wear eye and ear protection anytime you are in the range facility. • Keep your firearms unloaded and in a closed container or holster when entering or exiting the range facility. • Never load or handle your firearm if you aren’t in your shooting lane. Shoot in your assigned lane and only shoot at the target in your lane. • When you put your target on the hanger, hang it at eye level so you aren’t shooting up or down. Do not reach past the firing line for any reason. • If you drop your target or brass or anything at all, ask the range staff for help.
November 2017
• Never hand a loaded firearm to another person. Clear the gun, make it safe and set it on the counter to let the other person pick it up, load it, and begin shooting.
• Always check the policy at your range before shooting shotguns or rifles. Some allow rifles up to a certain caliber, and some allow shotguns with ammunition restrictions. Most ranges also have ammunition restrictions for all guns, steel core/green tip, incendiary, tracer, or armor piercing ammunition are usually not allowed. Most indoor ranges do not allow muzzleloader rifles of any kind. • Never bring food, drinks or tobacco of ANY kind on the range. This will lessen the chance of ingesting lead residue. • Always wash your hands immediately after shooting to remove any lead dust or primer residue. • Leave your booth clean and uncluttered, and sweep up all of your brass and dump it into the bucket for spent brass. • When leaving the range area for any reason, unload your firearm at the shooting position and case it. • The call “CEASE FIRE” means to stop shooting immediately. Any shooter can call “CEASE FIRE” if they witness an unsafe act or there is a problem requiring all shooters to stop firing. Never allow unattended children on the range. • Children must be supervised by an adult at all times. If you are unable to clear a malfunction, leave the firearm in the booth and notify the range personnel. • Never fire from the prone position. The angle will have you shooting at the baffles on the ceiling. Some ranges allow full auto firing with prior permission. As stated earlier, these are general rules, and each range has its own specific rules. Make sure you learn them before you enter the range. It makes shooting a safer and more enjoyable experience for all involved. Just because it’s getting colder doesn’t mean you have to stop practicing, so be safe and keep shooting.

TENNESSEE BIKE FEST
By Denise High Photos By Frank Pate Photography
For many years there was a motorcycle rally outside Tracy City TN on Monteagle Mountain. That one is gone, but the venue was just too good to not have a bike rally there. The TN Bike Fest grounds are several hundred acres of gently rolling fields separated by wooded areas with great secluded camping spots scattered all around, shade trees and a huge permanent covered stage with roads throughout the property. There are several hotels nearby, and it’s less than 10 minutes from 2 cities. Not to mention the great riding around the mountains and Sequatchie Valley, the organizers of TN Bike Fest found the perfect place for a motorcycle rally and this first year rally didn’t disappoint! It was an old school biker party with great food, great vendors, great music, great games, great rides and especially great people.

Saturday the music started early in the afternoon with the Dave Jennette Band, followed by the hard rocking Kimberly White Project and 4 miles gone. They saved the best for last, Saturday night the Ultimate Biker Band “Geneva” put on a fantastic show, there was a Miss Tennessee Bike Fest Pageant and AC/DC Tribute Band Big Gun rocked the house to close the show. Actor Lee Veroort from AMC’s hit show The Walking Dead was on hand all weekend for photos and autographs and
Katie Blaze showed off her amazing fire performance skills.. We have to give a mention to the incredible sound and light guys, the production was unbelievable and the great music could be heard clearly all over the mountain. The organizers did a spectacular job with their first year rally, they learned a lot and plans are already underway for the 2nd annual which promises to be even bigger and better! This one is sure to become a favorite so be sure to follow them on Facebook, TN Bike Fest or their website tnbikefest.com

TOP OF THE ROCK
M
ost of us think of Monteagle, Tennessee, (locally known as the Top of the Rock) as a place to fuel up or eat at the Smokehouse, on the way to Chattanooga or Nashville. However, the ten parks around Monteagle, making up South Cumberland State Park, contain some beautiful hidden gems. The 25,539 acre park is scattered over 100 square miles and 4 counties. While attending the Rendezvous, with Boswell’s combined HOG Chapters, we visited several of the parks. Full directions to the parks are available at tnstateparks.com, then South Cumberland State Park, then Directions, or at the Visitor Center, on US 41 in Monteagle. Sewanee Natural Bridge is a few miles west of Monteagle on Natural Bridge Rd., off TN 56. This sandstone bridge, carved out of the mountain, is easily accessible from the parking lot. It stands 50 feet high, with a 25 foot opening. There is a great view from the top and Lost Cave lies behind the base. While traveling to the bridge, be sure ride through the 13,000 acre, Univ. of the South, one of the most beautiful campuses, with its architecture more like London than Tennessee and even an equestrian center. Near Beersheba Springs off on TN 56, are Greeter Falls and then Great Stone Door. The Door is a crack that runs from the top of the cliff to the bottom and looks like a huge door, partially ajar, on an easy 1 mile trail. The view of the Savage Gulf below is spectacular. Off US 41 near Tracy City is Grundy Lakes. The 4 small lakes (116 acres) are accessible by vehicle. Along the road you will see 19th century coke ovens dug into the hillsides or you can walk the Lone Rock Loop Trail. The ovens converted coal, mined on the property, into coke for the iron mills.
November 2017
At Grundy Forest further south on US 41, near Tracy City, there is a fairly easy 2 mile scenic loop trail, which meanders beside a beautiful creek, featuring small falls, deep pools, and peace and quiet. Foster Falls, off US 41, between Tracy City and Jasper, has a short, easy trail to the overlook. The more adventuresome can hike to the base of the falls. The other parks feature serious hiking trails, with primitive camping in the woods. These are a bit much for the casual visitor. November is the perfect time to be a “leaf-peeper” and visit the “other mountains” in Tennessee. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper

FEATURED BIKE THUNDER ROADS® TENNESSEE FEATURED BIKE 1940 Indian Military Chief 340B
GENERAL EISENHOWER General Eisenhower as nicknamed by Ray Dey is a 1940 Indian Military Chief 340B. Ray is a very active 81 year old legend in the Nashville motorcycle community. Ray started his motorcycle repair shop at the age of 18 in 1954 and it is still operating today. Eisenhower is a mostly original and matching numbers bike. At 74 Cubic Inches and 1200CC the Military Chief was one of the largest motorcycles to be used by any military during World War 2. The US Army purchased 115 documented solo Military Chiefs and 900 side car equipped Chiefs during World War 2. Eisenhower is a documented 1 of 115 solo bikes making it one of the rarest motorcycles of World War 2. Eisenhower was restored from a basket case by renowned lifelong Indian Motorcycle enthusiast Robin Markey of Pennsylvania. As it was built in 1940 the bike retains its left grip throttle, right grip spark advance, foot clutch, and right side stick gear shift. Because of its size and displacement Eisenhower has no problem maintaining today’s highway speeds. After restoration Eisenhower spent several years in a military memorabilia museum until acquired by Kenneth and Melissa Brown of Gallatin, Tennessee. Due to mechanical neglect in the museum the bike was not running when acquired. With the help of Ray Dey the General runs and functions like new today and can often be seen on the streets and country roads of Middle Tennessee.

BIKE OF THE MONTH
2006 HARLEYDAVIDSON SOFTAIL DELUXE Congratulations to Jesse Hernandez on winning our monthly Bike Contest on Facebook!
I’m Jesse Hernandez from Phoenix, Arizona. Thank you for voting for Suavecito, my 2006 Softail Deluxe. When I first started this build, I knew I wanted to build a bike that was show worthy but most importantly I wanted to build a daily rider. I wanted to be able to ride the bike anywhere without fear of damaging my build. I also knew that I wanted to pay tribute to my culture with this build, so I decided I would go with a Lowrider style paint job. Suavecito has a custom patterned purple candy paint job that was designed and done by my friend Alex Lopez, aka “Modern Arte” from Glendale, AZ. The paint job includes a marble effect along with fingerprint patterns. The handlebars are 16” X 1.5” Carlini Gangster Apes. The slipons are 45” Batique style made by Steady Custom Cycles. Aside from the paint job, what attracts the most attention are the engraved pieces on the bike. The headlight and passing light trim, timing cover, breather cover, transmission cover, exhaust tips, derby cover, horn cover, coil cover, and the center dash are all engraved. The custom turn signals by Cuztom Kraft also attract plenty of attention. If you ever see me rolling down the street wave hi! Thanks again! If you have a cool custom bike you would like to have featured in our magazine, enter it in our monthly contest by submitting a pic of your bike to ThunderRoadsTn@gmail.com November 2017

LESLIE W. WATSON MEMORIAL
TOY RUN & BENEFIT PARTY
By Scott High Bikers Who Care is a group of caring, giving, big hearted, and fun loving bikers in Clarksville, but unlike most groups that form to put on an event, in their case an event formed this group. The story is familiar to some, in 1982 a group of friends organized a toy run to honor the memory of Clarksville Motorcycle Legend Leslie W. Watson who had recently passed away, besides naming the Toy Run after him, his 41 Knucklehead lead the way as it still does every year. After the toy run which drew about 100 bikes the first year they had a party to celebrate. Much to their surprise the party actually made a profit so they decided to use the proceeds to support the newly formed Dream Factory of Clarksville and through that Camp Rainbow. At some point they needed to open a bank account and because the bank needed a name for the account, Bikers Who Care was born. BWC works year round to raise money with poker runs, a Haunted House, TN Red White and Brewfest, they collect toys, and participate in camps, Baseball leagues, and many other things for special needs kids. Now BWC fully funds Camp

Rainbow and supports many other organizations and events. They have fun doing it all and everything they do is rewarding in its own way, but the Toy Run Party is their reward to themselves and they invite everyone to join them for their party. BWC has been organizing the Leslie W. Watson Memorial Toy Run for 36 years now and the crowd for the party was awesome but more than that the line of bikes for the toy run was the longest in years. There were reports that the first bikes were at the drop-off before the last ones had even left the speedway. Like every year the music was great, this year the headliners were American Floyd and Colt Ford on Friday, and Jasmine Cain and Blackfoot on Saturday. Besides the music there are 3 days of Vendors with camping on site. They also have a Bike Show, Motorcycle Drag Races, a Burlesque Show, Bikini and Tattoo Contests and even Free Beer donated by Budweiser of Clarksville. If you have never been it’s worth the trip, it won’t be your last, and it’s For The Kids! November 2017

Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: There seems to be a lot of stuff going on in our country concerning the American Flag and whether people should respect it and give it honor. Most of the disrespect I see is coming from actors, actresses, TV news entertainers, football/ sports athletes, communists, socialists and racists. They don’t like police doing their job, they don’t like enforcement of immigration laws, they are unhappy the new administration is acting to protect our country from nuclear attack by Iran and North Korea and are unhappy that the government isn’t giving them enough free stuff!!!! Thank God for bikers. They are patriotism rolling! I must say; all of the flag stuff makes perfect sense to me. Anyone who is not an American at heart would feel the way these people feel and work to erode traditional American thinking, respect and traditions. In their minds they are standing up for something righteous and fighting for what they think is right. So, what does that say about actors, actresses, TV news entertainers, sports athletes, communists, socialists and racists?? All they are doing is making it clear they hate where they live and all the things that allow them to make these public statements without being arrested, tortured and shot by some dictator’s secret police. Many of these people make very public statements that they are going to leave the country if something doesn’t go their way but they never do. They look around the world and there isn’t anywhere else they can go and do what they do here. They end up slinking into the shadows until the next election cycle and staying here to show the rest of us how squirrely they really are. Is it any wonder movie ticket sales are declining? Is it any wonder the NFL is losing money?? Is it any wonder that more Americans are seeing the biased propaganda nature of the nightly news and turning it off?? Real Americans vote with their dollars and those who are trashing America are starting to feel the pinch. Unfortunately, the government is pushing for everyone to go to college. Colleges now are invested in anti-American indoctrination, putting college students into long term debt which forces them to look to the government

for handouts and somehow admire the looney left. We really need to look at home schooling and turning off the television. We don’t really get that much useful information from TV and would multiply it dramatically if we’d read books instead. If a homeschooled high school graduate would go to a library every day for four years and read educational books they would likely be able to pass multiple graduate level exams? Think about it! Why do we send our children to public schools that continue to go up in cost and we continue to see lower education results? That’s what big government gets us - higher taxes and poorer results!! Why is it that American business lobbies for easy immigration for young college graduates and professionals from third world countries? It’s because they are still teaching in third world countries. American schools are focused on indoctrination and socialization. America’s world ranking has dropped in education. When was the last time you saw an American flag hanging in front of a church? There are a few but not many. Reverence for God and a pious American society was behind the founding of this country and the creation of our United States Constitution. Churches used to be a major part of the political landscape of our country until the government instituted a tax system in the early 1900’s. It gave churches tax exempt status and slowly turned up the heat to stop churches from political involvement. They threatened to make churches pay taxes if they got involved in politics. The politicians also began trying to dumb people down by telling them there is a separation between church and state. There is not a separation. The constitution only prohibits the government from establishing a national religion. Ask your pastor why there isn’t an American flag flying on a flag pole in front of your church. See what he or she says. You may find they don’t know the constitution and have been buffaloed by the IRS. Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)
FIRST TWIN PEAKS CASE GOES TO TRIAL IN WACO Following more than two years of examining trials, hearings, motions to recuse judges and to disqualify prosecutors, appeals court rulings and a host of speedy trial demands, the first case in the Twin Peaks melee has finally gone to trial in Waco, Texas. Jacob Carrizal, President of the Dallas chapter of the Bandidos, appears before Judge Matt Johnson of Waco’s 54th State District Court on charges of directing the activities of a criminal street gang and two counts of engaging in organized criminal activity. Carrizal is the first to stand trial of the 154 bikers indicted in the Twin Peaks shootout that left nine bikers dead and dozens injured while attending a Saturday, May 17, 2015 meeting of the Coalition of Clubs and Independents, an affiliation of motorcycle groups. Many questions will hopefully be answered, at long last, including how much of the bloodshed was due to a biker turf war and how much resulted from law enforcement actions. Authorities tightened security measures around the McLennan County Courthouse, including a metal fence around the 115-year old building, and black curtains over the windows, while attorneys have whittled down a jury pool from nearly 150 prospective jurists to 11 men and three women, with two serving as alternates. “LOWEST FIGURES ON RECORD” FOR U.K. MOTORCYCLE FATALITIES In a promising message for motorcyclists, statistics recently released by England’s Department for Transport (DfT) show that U.K. motorcycle deaths are down by 13%, the lowest figure since records began in 2006, despite an overall increase in motorcycle traffic last year and amidst the highest total of overall road deaths since 2011. In fact, statistics from the DfT’s “Reported road casualties in Great Britain: 2016 annual report” reveal that motorcyclists were the only road user to see a decrease in fatalities from 2015-16, even though they rode 2% more to cover 2.8 billion miles. AAA CLAIMS BABY BOOMERS AT HIGHER RISK ON A BIKE A new report from AAA claims that the baby boomer generation that made motorcycles cool are now more likely to sustain lifethreatening or fatal injuries in a crash than younger riders. The organization, analyzing federal crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), says older riders make up a disproportionate number of motorcycle fatalities. The mortality rate for riders who are 60 or older is more than four times the overall increase in motorcycle deaths for 2015-16, says AAA, with motorcycle fatalities rising 5.1% while deaths among older baby boomers increased 22%. Important to note, the increase in overall motorcycle fatalities is partially the byproduct of a corresponding rise in the number of motorcycles on the road, increasing to 8.6 million motorcycles in 2015 compared with 8.4 million in 2014, according to Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) data cited by the organization. 32
LIFE SENTENCES PROPOSED FOR KILLER DRIVERS U.K. drivers or riders convicted of causing death by dangerous driving could face life imprisonment if new Government proposals are adopted to increase maximum penalties. The move follows a public consultation in which 70% of respondents believed that the maximum penalty for causing death by dangerous driving should be increased to life -- the top penalty that British law offers. Under the same proposal, the crime of causing death by careless driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs will also be increased to life. Currently, both offenses carry a maximum term of 14 years imprisonment, while the average sentence imposed is four years. The Government also proposes the creation of a new offense of causing serious injury by careless driving, with a prison sentence up to five years, a measure supported by 90% of those surveyed. The punishment for cases that involve mobile phones, street racing or speeding would carry a sentence equivalent to manslaughter. THE FUTURE OF THE ENGINE IN QUESTION Some world governments are already acting to curtail or eliminate gasoline-powered engines, and now the Governor of California, Jerry Brown, has announced that he is also considering ways to ban the sale of vehicles with internal combustion engines. During a recent public meeting on U.S. Climate Alliance in New York, Brown stated; “We’re doing something in the face of inaction.” “Eventually, Washington will join with us, because you can’t deny science forever, you can’t deny reality. And the reality is climate change is occurring.” With a zero-emissions mandate currently in place, California is one of the U.S. states that is fully committed to carrying out the objectives of the Paris Agreement -- which is an ambitious project from the United Nations aiming to tackle the problems caused global climate change. Gov. Brown’s announcement follows a similar diktat from the British and French Governments, reflecting plans to move to electrically-powered vehicles within the next few decades SELF-DRIVING CARS CLOSER TO HOME The U.S. House of Representatives unanimously approved a bipartisan bill called the SELF-DRIVE act, the first of its kind to drive the unmanned market forward by putting federal regulators in charge and barring states from blocking autonomous vehicles or setting performance standards. This legislation would supersede state-by-state rules, making it possible for autonomous testing to proceed on a level playing field across the U.S. If it becomes law (which still requires it to pass the Senate), then it would make it possible for companies working on self-driving to field a lot more vehicles per year – as many as 100,000 autonomous test cars annually, in fact. The proposal would make it possible for car companies such as Ford, GM and others to bypass certain safety standards that

currently apply to human piloted cars, including equipment and controls. The Senate has also been working on its own self-driving bill, which may cover trucking as well. CALIFORNIA MEASURE WILL ENSURE TRAFFIC LIGHTS DETECT CYCLES Two-wheelers will be detected by all newly installed and replacement traffic signals throughout California, as recently passed Senate Bill 672 will “ensure that local transportation agencies will replace current traffic-actuated signals during the course of regular maintenance and upgrade cycles to adopt motorcycleand bicycle-sensitive signals.” Existing law due to sunset provides that, in due course of maintaining or replacing traffic control devices, local governments ensure that the systems are set at a level to that can detect cyclists and motorcycles, thus this bill indefinitely extends these provisions without a specific mandate from Sacramento. “Since I authored the original law ten years ago, this common sense measure has proven to be effective at making our roads safer,” said Senator Jean Fuller (R-Bakersfield). Signed by Governor Jerry Brown on October 3, 2017, SB 672 specifies that “Upon the first placement of a traffic-actuated signal or replacement of the loop detector of a traffic-actuated signal [responding to the presence of traffic detected by mechanical, visual, electrical, or other means], the traffic-actuated signal shall, to the extent feasible and in conformance with professional traffic engineering practice, be installed and maintained so as to detect lawful bicycle or motorcycle traffic on the roadway.” Advanced by ABATE of California, the motorcycle rights organization says of the legislation; “Thanks to Governor Brown for signing this permanent extension,” stated Chairman of the Board Glenn Phillips, adding that “With over a Million Motorcyclists in our state, this legislation is imperative to protect riders on California roads.” November 2017
HELP “LEMON LAW” PASS FOR RIDERS IN PENNSYLVANIA ABATE of Pennsylvania has issued a Legislative Call To Action regarding House Bill 74, a bill introduced by Representative Pam Snyder that would include motorcycles in the current PA Automobile Lemon Law. HB 74 was introduced and referred to the House Consumer Affairs Committee. On June 12 the House Consumer Affairs Committee approved HB 74, and the measure is now facing consideration by the full House. “Contact House of Representative members and ask them to support HB 74 to include motorcycles in the state’s “Automobile Lemon Law,” urges the state office of ABATE of PA. “You can call them, email them or visit them. But you have to do something if we are to have success in having HB 74 pass the House and be sent to the Senate for their consideration.” PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT SEEKS STRICT HELMET LAW ENFORCEMENT The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) in the Philippines is seeking to strengthen enforcement of the Mandatory Helmet Law (RA 10054) nationwide. In a Memorandum issued Sept 6 to all governors, mayors and others, the DILG directs local officials “to implement said (Helmet Law) Act, and ensure that the provisions are strictly complied with.” Congressman Cesar V. Sarmiento directly addressed DILG during the department’s budget hearing in Congress and said he observed that several motorbike riders and drivers forget to use their helmet resulting in road accidents and deaths. The Subject of the memo calls for the “Observance of the provisions of Republic Act No. 10054; an Act Mandating All Motorcycle Riders to Wear Standard Protective Motorcycle Helmets While Driving and Providing Penalties Therefor (sic).” QUOTABLE QUOTE: “A man wearing a helmet defending our country is more valuable than a man in a helmet defending a football.” ~ Seen on a T-Shirt

RIDER SAFETY
IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS
T
HIS SPRING, I was attracted to a beautiful touring bike. I always enjoy slowly strolling down the rows of bikes at a dealership watching the chrome sparkle from lights and reflect colors from people’s clothing as they walk by. It didn’t take much encouragement for me to test ride that beautiful, shiny bike. Several weeks later, I made it my own and the smile couldn’t be taken off my face as I rode it home. Since then, I have stopped counting the number of times men and women have made comments to me like “That’s a big bike for a lady.” Or, “Do you ride that by yourself?” And, “How many times have you dropped it?” For the record, it fits me fine, I do ride it all by myself and it has not been dropped once. For those whose find it encouraging, I let them know that I’ve been riding bikes a long time, I spent thousands of miles riding a smaller bike and I’ve learned to pay attention to the little things. I’ve learned a lot of these “little things” from my sweetie, some from coaching for Harley-Davidson Riding Academy and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, others from miles of riding and picked-up a few more from reading and research. As riders, the more miles we put on our bikes, we often take the little things for granted. As an experienced rider getting on a bigger bike, I knew I had to be even more attentive to little things because of the increase in weight. Here’s an example: Just last weekend I found myself in Birmingham, Alabama at the Barber Vintage Festival. As we pulled in, the parking area was packed and I was looking for a space to park two bikes that I would be comfortable getting out of all by myself. (Yes, I’m an independent kind of lady.) I knew if I pulled into the empty space, at the down-slope angle, I would not be able to back out by myself. Instead of parking the easy way and depending on my husband’s help to get me out of the spot, I asked him to park his bike first. Then we discussed how to use the slope of the parking lot to my advantage to back into the spot and give me an easy exit when we got ready to leave. While this took a little more time, it was a valuable learning experience for me. The next day, I watched a man on his touring bike need help from a friend to push him into his parking spot. Yes, I did grin a little bit.
• Practice low-speed maneuvers in tight spaces, like turns from a stop and U-turns. When the time comes for a U-turn, your skills will be sharp. • If you have a passenger, ask them to wait for your signal prior to getting on the motorcycle. And, have another signal for getting off. That way you are always prepared. Every time I get on my new bike, I’m constantly thinking about little things. My experience increases with each mile and so does my confidence. Yes, I’m still smiling and loving it. One of the best feelings for me is being able to encourage other women riders that are just beginning or thinking of getting a bigger motorcycle to follow their heart. When you get on your bike, try not to take the little things for granted. Remember that safe riding starts with you! Donna, along with being an avid riding enthusiast, is a MSF motorcycle safety coach for the state of Tennessee and a HarleyDavidson Riding Academy Coach. She is a member of the Motor Maids, H.O.G. and Ladies of Harley.
What are some of the “little things”? • Planning ahead when parking and using the “lay of the land” to help you. • If you do need to ask for help, always let the person helping know what you want them to do. Don’t assume they will know how to help you. • Pulling up to a stop sign or red light? Glance at the area where you will put your feet down when you come to a stop. A pothole, loose gravel, oil or other fluids can cause a foot to slip or one side to be lower. • Did you pack for a trip? Extra weight can alter your stopping distance. • Practice stopping, starting and parking. Things like a heavier bike or ABS make a difference in how your bike reacts and feels. • Do you have new gadgets? Sit on your bike and try to form “muscle memory” for using them without looking at them. Don’t let the new radio or GPS be a distraction to you. November 2017

A mechanic was removing a cylinder-head from the motor of a Harley motorcycle when he spotted a well-known cardiologist in his shop. The cardiologist was there waiting for the service manager to come take a look at his bike when the mechanic shouted across the garage “Hey Doc, want to take a look at this?” The cardiologist, a bit surprised, walked over to where the mechanic was working on the motorcycle. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and said, “So Doc, look at this engine. I open its heart, take the valves out, repair any damage, and then put them back in, and when I finish, it works just like new. So how come I make $39,675 a year, a pretty small salary and you get the really big bucks (500 mil a year + bonuses & perks) when you and I are doing basically the same work?” The cardiologist paused, smiled and leaned over, then whispered to the mechanic….. “Try doing it with the engine running.” -------------------------------------------------------------This bill collector had been calling Rhino for several months and he eventually had to block him. But one day he called from a different number and Rhino answered the phone and the collector said; “Do you know as of today your outstanding bill is one year old?” Rhino said, “Really? Tell it Happy Birthday!” and hung up. -----------------------------------------------------------How come we choose from just two people to run for President but over fifty for Miss America? -------------------------------------------------------------When I was young we used to go ‘skinny dipping.’ Now I just ‘chunky dunk.’ --------------------------------------------------------------WHY are they called apartments when they are all stuck together? --------------------------------------------------------------WHY if flying is supposedly so safe, do they call the airport the terminal? --------------------------------------------------------------WHY is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour? --------------------------------------------------------------Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool. --------------------------------------------------------------What’s blue and covered with feathers? A biker stops by the local Harley Shop to have his bike fixed. They couldn’t do it while he waited, so he said he didn’t live far and would just walk home. On the way home he stopped at the hardware store and bought a bucket and an anvil. He stopped by the feed store/livestock dealer and picked up a couple of chickens and a goose. However, struggling outside the store he now had a problem: how to carry all of his purchases home. While he is scratching his head he was approached by a little old lady who told him she was lost. She asked, “Can you tell me how to get to 1603 Mockingbird Lane?” The biker said, “Well, as a matter of fact, I live at 1616 Mockingbird Lane. I would walk you home but I can’t carry this lot.” The old lady suggested, “Why don’t you put the anvil in the bucket, carry the bucket in one hand, put a chicken under each arm and carry the goose in the other hand?” “Why thank you very much,” he said and proceeded to walk the old girl home. On the way he says, “Let’s take my shortcut and go down this alley. We’ll be there in no time.” The little old lady looked him over cautiously then said, “I am a lonely widow without a husband to defend me. How do I know that when we get in the alley you won’t hold me up against the wall, pull up my skirt, and ravish me?” The biker said, “Holy smokes lady! I am carrying a bucket, an anvil, two chickens and a goose. How in the world could I possibly hold you up against the wall and do that?” The lady replied, “Set the goose down, cover him with the bucket, put the anvil on top of the bucket and I’ll hold the chickens.” (Hey, old broads get horny too!) --------------------------------------------------------------Two turkeys are standing in their pen shootin’ the chit when one says “what’s up w/ Ed? I saw that Farmer guy chase him all around and then put him up under his arm and walk off with him. The other turkey says, “I think he’s going to the dentist. Heard Farmer say something about stuffing his cavity.” --------------------------------------------------------------A woman is feeling totally in her “Zen” state of mind and says; “I love you” Her husband says “is that the wine talking?” She seriously replies, “I was talking to my wine”. --------------------------------------------------------------A blonde and a brunette are in a car and the brunette mentions that Thanksgiving falls on a Friday next year.
