October 2015

Hello Fall… I’m so glad you’re here and can’t wait for some of the BEST and most beautiful riding weather all year!! I’m also excited about Halloween, we are going to take the Nashville Haunted Bar Tour this year, I’ve never done it, but I hear it’s a blast! It’s also our anniversary month, 29 years and looking forward to 29 more! We usually go to Gatlinburg every year for our anniversary, but this year I think we are going to Canada to visit our daughter and son-in-law. They usually come home every year for either Thanksgiving or Christmas, but work and moving into a new house is keeping them from coming home this year, so since we have never been to Canada and they can’t come visit us, we are going to visit them this time. I am VERY nervous about it because I have never flown! Yes, I’m in my forties and I’ve never been on an airplane and was hoping I would never have any reason to, but I’ll do anything for my kids, I’ll just have to make a stop at the airport bar before boarding, LOL! Wow, what a fun and busy month September was! As I’m writing this letter, we just returned from a weekend at the Clarksville speedway. It was the 34th Annual Leslie W. Watson Memorial Toy Run and Party sponsored by Bikers Who Care and it was a huge success again this year and so much fun for such a worthy cause! If you have never been, you don’t know what you’re missing! BWC knows how to throw one heck of a party, so plan ahead and make sure that you don’t miss it next year and look for an article and pics in the November issue all about this year’s event. Now that we have our 1st year behind us, we have been listening to feedback from our readers and will be making some small changes at the first of the year that we hope you will enjoy, like more articles about some of the great places to ride in Tennessee, things to see and do, etc., product and bike reviews, and we may start a tech tips column too. Also, as of this issue we are doing our own Bullet Points page… we would like to rename it and would love to hear any ideas you have about a new title name for the page. We will keep it as is for now, Bullet Points, until we come up with something better. I suggested Hammer Time, LOL, but Scott didn’t like that so much :) Maybe Tennessee Gun Talk would be good, but let us hear your ideas. Maybe we will have a Facebook contest and whoever comes up with the best name wins a prize, and who doesn’t like to win freebies!? This month is Breast Cancer Awareness month, so ladies, don’t forget to schedule your yearly exam and mammogram if you haven’t already and everyone can do something to support Breast Cancer awareness and research. You can attend one of many Breast Cancer events that a lot of our local H-D dealerships in the State are having this month. Check their website and Facebook pages to find one near you! We have recently signed on a couple of new contributors and are still looking for someone in the Knoxville and Chattanooga area, so if you think you have what it takes to be a part of Team Thunder and would like to earn a little extra cash having fun then give Scott a call at 615-389-1149. Sunday November 1st is the end of Daylight Savings Time, so don’t forget to turn your clocks back an hour before you go to bed and get out and enjoy this beautiful riding weather and put some miles on your bike before cold weather gets here! As always, please patronize our advertisers, tell them you saw their ad in Thunder Roads, and please like us on Facebook so you can keep up with all our advertisers’ specials and events!

Have a Safe and Spooktacular Halloween!! Ride Hard Live Free, Denise, Scott & Thunder Dawg

“Jonah” Most of the time we look at the book of Jonah as a children’s tale and fail to see the revelation that is there. First thing to notice is that God’s Hand is on Jonah. God has called him and God has sent him. The Bible says that “To whom much is given, much is required.” One that is called & sent cannot get by with some things that the average believer gets by with. When the human will interferes with God’s will, it creates chaos. God told Jonah, “go to Nineveh and cry out against it. But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish.” The Jews had a great hatred for the people of Nineveh. Even though Jonah heard from God very clearly, he still decided he would do what he wanted to do instead of what God has told him to do. Sounds like some of us. “But the Lord sent out a great wind into the sea…so that the ship was like to be broken.” The men on the ship began to throw all their belongings overboard to lighten the ship. When you hang around backsliding Christians, you can lose all your stuff as well. Sometimes we can get in God’s way of dealing with His people and it ends up costing us everything. Parents are praying for God to straighten up their children and keep getting in God’s way by bailing them out all the time. We call it love but God calls it lazy parenting. If you keep bailing somebody out and never see any productive fruit, then you’re doing it out of your flesh (emotions) and not hearing from God! When God tells you to help, you’ll always see positive fruit as a result. If you’re “giving” to people in need and it’s breaking you financially, then you’ll know you’ve been getting in God’s way. If you’re getting in God’s way, He’ll break you until you can’t get in His way any longer. “As soon as they cast Jonah into the sea, the sea ceased from raging.” We know the rest of the story where the whale swallowed Jonah, Jonah repented, the whale threw him up on dry land and it just happen to be “Nineveh,” right where God wanted him in the first place. Now Jonah does what God told him to do. God will have His way with us. We may place ourselves in our own belly of a whale, our own hell on earth, but repentance will restore us back to where we should have been all along. Jonah preached “You got 40 days and God is going to wipe you all out! And the leaders of Nineveh believed God and called for a fast of all the people and all the animals. “And God saw their works that they turned from October 2015

their evil way; God said that He would not destroy them.” T hen we see Jonah get angry with God; “It displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.” Now isn’t this the same backsliding preacher that ended up in the belly of the whale and ask God to forgive him? I am amazed how we Christians can forgive someone who made a mistake several years ago, but when it was yesterday, we’re not so forgiving. Jonah even got in God’s case; “was this not my saying, when I was yet in my own country? Therefore I fled unto Tarshish.” Now Jonah is blaming God for his own rebellion. Then Jonah ask for God to kill him, “Therefore O Lord, take my life from me; it is better for me to die than to live.” Jonah felt this way because of an Old Testament law that stated “If a prophet prophesied and it does not come to pass, he must be stoned to death. ” Sometimes even the strongest Christian can let their emotions get the best of them and say the dumbest things. So God replied “Doest thou well to be angry?” In other words “How’s that working for you?” God’s asking the same question of us today when we let our fleshly emotions dictate to us instead of God’s Word. Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

Lady Rider

Carrie Martin Vance & Amanda Martin Vance If you want proof of a quality machine, ride 12,572 miles without a breakdown. If you want proof of love of riding a motorcycle, try doing it 50 consecutive days. If you want proof age is a just a number, take a trip of a lifetime the year you turn 50. The summer of 2014 was proof that two ladies on two Harley’s could take an epic ride across the U.S. and have the best adventure of their lives. ‘How’d you get to Hawaii?’ is the #1 question people ask. Other questions, ‘What was your favorite state?’ Or… ‘Did you see anything?’ The questions they ask gives insight into what they are thinking when they hear about the adventure. The excuses they are processing for themselves for why they ‘can’t do it’, or the inspiration they feel as they wonder if they ‘could’ do it. I’m here to tell you, if you want to do it, you can. Money, time, physical capability can all be mitigated. The limitation is mental. Overcome that and you are on your way. The plan was to have ‘no plan’. The only exception were the flights arranged for Hawaii and Alaska to rent and ride 48 hours of volcanos and surfers then 17 hours of glaciers and moose. It would be 4 days of jetlag, mind-cramp and time-warp. What better place to warp your brain than Las Vegas? So, two weeks into the trip, we had a fixed date reservation for the bikes major service in Vegas while we were jet-setting. The idea was to ride from Harley shop to Harley shop in each state. It turned out each Harley stop was what I imagine the days of the Wild West was like, going from stage coach stop to stage coach stop. Rest and safety for a weary traveler. There is nothing like pulling out a paper map, tracing with a gloved finger from where you are now to where you want to go. It pulls people to you. Helpful suggestions, curious questions and lots of recommendations. July 1st, North Carolina mountain dawn to a sunset Florida Beach, 506 miles was the longest mileage day of the entire 50 day trip. Miles burned over the next 3 days added to the 100+ degree heat of the coastal backroads, crossing bridges, swamps and bayous to spend 8

July 4th in Dallas with family. Then Riding north and a bit backwards to pick up Route 66 at the corner of Kansas and east to Missouri in a wrongway Feldman style loop, it proved there would be nothing straight forward about this trip. Strong winds blowing against my back down the long westward track of I-40 past enormous white windmills, a colorful Stonehenge of Cadillac’s and dozens of Route 66 monuments, museums and markers. Electrified air lifted the hair on my arms as we pulled over to watch the lightning storm from a mountain top in New Mexico. Weather was a constant companion for the journey and for the most part, Mother Nature was kind. We traded the nostril stinging heat of the Pueblos of New Mexico for the humidity and pine tree scent of Colorado. There were soul stirring moments like riding my steelhorse through Monument Valley and silly experiences like laying on my back like a star-fish in the desert at the Four

Corners Monument. Unexpected, unplanned moments of visual symmetry of the same glowing light of sunset at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon as sunrise in Death Valley. Hwy 101 from Northern California to the top of Oregon was an Alice in Wonderland experience. One moment, miniature in giant world rolling under the multi-story high branches of Redwood trees. To having a giants perspective from the height of Cliffside views and tiny people on the beach below. From the mouth of the sea we followed the reverse of path of Lewis and Clark, taking the Columbia River along the southern border of Washington. The summer wildfires were to the west of our ride, but we smelled smoke in the air and ash covered our bikes as the haze followed us along Hwy 12 into and through Idaho. Gravel ‘highways’ in Montana tested our riding skills and in Sturgis two days before the Rally our parking skills were tested. The Badlands were a ‘blink’ and then it’s gone experience in a fairytale sandcastle landscape of pinks and greys. The wide open spaces of the west made me greedy for miles and I couldn’t wait to get to the H.D. Museum in Milwaukee. We were at the door as they opened and gone before the café was serving coffee, the same day we had lunch in Chicago and dinner in Michigan City. Taking the bridge into Canada (because the tunnel doesn’t allow motorcycles) our route through Ontario afforded us a bucket list view of rainbows over the Horseshoe Falls at Niagara. Ferry’s and bridges took

us over lake after lake after lake from New York to Maine. Munching lobster rolls and crab cakes, we Light-house hopped and toured history through New England before turning west again. Travelling West Virginia were the best winding roads of the trip. It was a metaphor for the winding down of our journey. We followed the Ohio River west, then headed south through Kentucky’s red river gorge before a last stop at Mammoth Caves to video our contribution to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. It was all the rage on the internet at that time. We crossed into Tennessee the morning of August 19th. Nashville marked our 50th state and 50th day. Greeted with the smiles and hugs from friends and family who’d followed us virtually on our trip, they’d travelled from other states to be with us in reality when we arrived from the journey of a lifetime. If you want proof there is no place like home? Travel 50 days to arrive home to the arms of your family and friends with 50 states of experiences to share.

We would love to hear your story!

History of Motorcycles Part 8

F

ollowing the Second Great War, things in the motorcycle world were changing faster than Katy Perry’s hair color. Across the pond, the BSA group purchased Triumph in 1951 and quickly became the world’s largest motorcycle producer. The German NSU was the largest manufacturer from 1955 to 1959, only to be beat out of first place by Honda in 1960. Norton had its own developments, with the manufacturing of the twin cylinder Dominator with a featherbed frame – lightweight and strong this café racer was the ride of choice by numerous world champion racers. Back home in the states, Indian ceased all operations and production in 1950. Five years later, Brockhouse Engineering purchased the rights to the Indian Motorcycle name and sold imported Royal Enfield models branded as Indian models until 1960. While others struggled, Harley-Davidson kept on keepin’ on and in 1952 released the side valve K model. This model featured an integrated engine and transmission to compete with sportier motorcycles coming out of Great Britain. In 1957 Harley delegated the K model the “Sportster”…it boasted a 55 cubic inch overhead valve engine, and within 1 year of its debut had become known as the first of the “superbikes”. The following year Harley introduced the first hydraulic rear brake and new rear suspension on Big Twin models, and the all new Duo-Glide. Post war background aside…what were our Veterans doing now that the war was over and they were back on American soil? Well they did what any one would do when out of sorts…they found a replacement for the comradery they had found 12

during the war. That replacement came in the form of motorcycle riders grouped loosely into organized clubs…unbeknownst to them; these veterans had just changed history in the United States. The “biker” came into being, a new social institution had been forever introduced into American society… and we thank you for that. Last month I mentioned the overwhelming amount of surplus bikes that remained after the war…cheap and plentiful, people started snatching them up. Now, these groups that were gathering together (bikers if you will) must have had some time on their hands, because they weren’t content with just changing social history once… Oh no my friends...these guys wanted far more. Now, having ridden European bikes during the war, they realized that Harley-Davison made some dependable machines, but they just couldn’t compete speed wise with what they had ridden during the war. So, naturally, they took these surplus bikes home and decided to modify them. These bikes were stripped down…ammunition racks, windshields, and scabbards discarded. Fenders were shortened or in some cases removed. Some left the paint alone, some chose to alter the standard olive green. What resulted in the end was the start of a new era, one that would change the world of motorcycles for generations to come. And so history was made again…probably in some dude’s garage…the bobber is born. While the bobber will reign for most of the decade, there is yet another change on the horizon…the bobber’s flashy cousin… the chopper comes to visit near the end of the fifties. You may be asking, what exactly is a bobber? Is it the same as a chopper? Well, the answer is No…While a chopper could indeed also be a bobber; they are not one in the same. Webster’s time is upon us…A bobber is defined as a stripped, stock ThunderRoadsTennessee.com

Occtober 2015

motorcycle with a “bobbed” or shortened fender and only essential motorcycle parts remaining. It is minimalistic and has had as much weight shed as possible to increase speed and performance. On the other end of the spectrum lies the chopper…The chopper has also had non-essential items removed, but it has a major difference…the frame is not stock, it has been “chopped” and modified from its original factory state and the rake of the front fork has also been modified in order to move the front tire further from the bike.

next month looking at all that is chopper, and the extremes the chopper culture went to in the 1960’s. Melanie Schwarte Melanie@thunderroadsiowa.com

Now while the bobber maintained its minimalistic approach and focus on function and speed, the chopper presents riders with the option of being fast, as well as eye catching. When building choppers first became a “thing” most people didn’t really know exactly what they were doing. Bikers would gather in garages and/ or shops, enlisting the help of friends in order to modify their frames and lighten their bikes. Gas tanks, headlights, and blinkers were made smaller. Some bikers removed their batteries and replaced them with magnetos to further reduce weight. Standard front tires were replaced with narrower tires, and handlebars were modified to be taller to compensate for the rake of the front fork (ape hangers). Bikers noticed immediately how much different it was to ride a motorcycle with these modifications, but did that stop anyone from pushing the envelope and creating bigger and better choppers in the future? Of course not…I’ve never met a biker who would back down from a challenge, and this was no different. I affectionately referred to the chopper as the “flashy cousin” of the bobber…. but let’s be honest here. The Chopper is more like an attention whore, and being in the limelight seems only fitting for such a diva. Choppers are unique, they are individualistic, and they deserve their own article. The chopper era took the Unites States by storm, and produced some pretty amazing names in the biker world. So, although I have been told that I shouldn’t encourage egocentrism…I am going to give in, just this once and spend October 2015

by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: Where were you 150 years ago? I guess you were probably the same as me – just a gleam in your greatgreat grandfather’s eye. 2011 to 2015 has been the 150th commemoration of the Civil War. Actually, my great-great grandfather was a Union cavalry soldier from Missouri in the civil war. He was part of the action around Vicksburg, Mississippi, when he came down with small pox and died. Luckily for me he took enough time to make my great grandfather before he left for the war. Lots of soldiers around Vicksburg died of small pox. So many that they put the bodies on river boats, floated them to the middle of the Mississippi river and burned them to limit the spread. Approximately 640,000 service members died during the war. Two-thirds of those who died did not die from war wounds. They died from disease. On the 18th of September this year the National Park Service held a commemorative funeral service for 13,000 of those who died. They were part of the 45,000 prisoners of war held in the Andersonville Confederate prison camp during its 14 months of operation. Those who died mostly succumbed to poor sanitation, malnutrition, overcrowding and exposure to the elements. The Andersonville POW camp story is well documented and todays military uses what happened there as instruction for officers and noncommissioned officers to teach them about ethics and the treatment of prisoners during war time. On April 27, 1865, the Sultana riverboat exploded in the greatest maritime disaster in United States history. An estimated 1,800 of her 2,427 passengers died when three of the four boilers exploded and she burned to the waterline and sank near Memphis, Tennessee. Most who died were released prisoners from Andersonville. No lottery winners there. Dying of malnutrition, exposure and poor sanitation isn’t limited to history books on the civil war. The state of our economy, slow economic growth and the stresses of war have made for thousands of homeless veterans. One of the organizations that help homeless veterans and veterans in transition is Operation Stand

October 2015

Down Tennessee, Inc. (OSDTN). This private 501c3 corporation is a 365 day a year veteran service center with offices in Nashville and Clarksville to provide assist to all veterans. OSDTN has an employment department to help veterans find good full time positions, a transitional housing department to help veterans who have slipped off the path of life, a couple of programs to assist homeless veterans get into long term housing, computer assistance, veteran counseling and provides referrals to other veteran service organizations. OSDTN was started in 1993 and since that time has helped thousands of veterans make the transition to civilian life and helped those with needs get through rough times in their lives and get back on track. You can learn more about this hard working organization that serves veterans at www.osdtn.org . On Sunday, October 25th OSDTN will hold its annual Boots Ride. The sign up begins at 8:30am at Cool Springs Harley Davidson with kick stands up at 10am. The ride will go down the Natchez Trace to the River Rat Grill in Hohenwald, TN. Each entrant will receive a bag of goodies and there will be an auction and other fund raising activities at the River Rat. If you haven’t eaten at the River Rat you are in for a real treat. They have awesome burgers, catfish, chicken and all the fix’ns you’d expect. The fall leaves should be changing and the speed limits on the trace let you ride with the turkey and deer without mishap. This is a great way to help America’s veterans and have a great fall ride. OSDTN relies on support from the community and donations to do what it does. I hope to see you there. You can pre-register at walkamile@osdtn.org or call Rick at 615-248-1981. October 25th will also be the 32nd anniversary of the invasion of Grenada. This military operation is often overlooked but was a very intense first blood for several of our modern Special Operations units. Remember my good friend, Cpt. Keith Lucas, who died that day piloting a special operations helicopter on a fierce mission. NSDQ Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. Bulldog * My monthly column reflects my personal point of view and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Publishers of this magazine, but they, like me, acknowledge the sacrifices made for the privilege of Freedom of Speech, therefore, they gratefully let me rant. Thank you for reading my rants. Hope my opinions don’t offend anyone, but, we all should be grateful for the right to have free opinions.

Darryl Worley’s Hitmakers and Harleys Again this year, Darryl Worley and Bumpus Harley-Davidson have teamed up to raise money for The Darryl Worley Foundation. This foundation helps those in need in Harden and McNairy Counties in Tennessee. A major beneficiary is the Darryl Worley Cancer Treatment Center, which allows cancer patients in this area to receive care, without long distance travel to large cities. In addition, individuals and charities, including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Ayres Children’s Medical Center, La Bonheur Children’s Medical Center, and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, benefit from funding from the foundation. The emphasis of this event centers on helping children. Scott Bumpus became friends with Worley, due to his child having Cystic Fibrosis. On July 21, at the Murfreesboro dealership, Darryl brought Andy Griggs, Mark Nesler, and Wynn Varble, his fellow songwriters, to sing their hits for a full-house crowd. Worley sang several songs, including his new song “Redneck”, “Second Wind”, and “Sounds Like Life to Me”, Of course, he brought the house to its feet with “Have You Forgotten”. Griggs songs included Martina McBride’s “This Ain’t No

Practice Life”, “You Won’t Ever Be Lonely”, “Amen”, and “On His Mind”. Nesler’s songs included “If I Fall Can You Let Me Down Easy”, George Strait’s hit, “Living and Living Well”, “Just to See You Smile” ( #1 for 6 weeks), and Worley’s first #1 song, “I Miss My Friend”. Varble contributions included “A little More Country Than That”, “A Little Too Country For Me”, “Beer Drinker”, “I’m the Only Honky in This Honky Tonk”, and “I Had a Country Song To Sing”, The guys put on a great show, alternating songs among the group, and often, backed up by the others. As a special addition, songwriter, Wade Hayes performed “Go Live Your Life”. Wade survived Stage 4 colon cancer and is cancer free. The survival rate is 12%, so we are grateful for his recovery. This is an intimate show, nothing like the venues where we often pay big money to see the artists as fly specks on the far away stage. The My Roots Catering catered the event. Tickets started at a mere $75. Judy and I were privileged to sit at a table with Pam Williams, the widow of George Williams of Visual Edge Pinstriping. She is a great lady and he is deeply missed for his great art

book Turn Around (Blindside), a Brighton Purse, and Diamond Candles. Ticket sales and auction items brought the total raised to over $35,000. A like event was held at the Bumpus Jackson dealership on July 28. Great support to a worthy cause, as well as a one-of-a-kind opportunity to hear the guys who wrote the hits. To participate in next year’s Hitmakers and Harleys, contact your Bumpus dealership, and get on the list. The major foundation event is the Tennessee River Run, held on October 2-4. This is a fun packed event, started in 2002, by Worley, held at the Pickwick Landing State Park. There are several events in the Fall from motorcycle and boat poker runs, to concerts, a 5k run, a golf tournament, and a bass tournament. For information on this event, go to: facebook.com/TennesseeRiverRun#!/ or tnriverrun.org. Thanks to the Bumpus group for hosting the Hitmakers and Harleys fundraisers, for this good cause. Every year, in late summer, Appleton Harley-Davidson invites anyone with a Hot Rod or a Motorcycle that wants to show them off, to come out to their annual Hot Rods and Harleys event. This year there were lots of cars and motorcycles, probably because the weather was perfect, and that made the judging even more difficult. The cars ranged from the very old to the very new. Lots of antique cars and trucks, one old Dodge Brothers truck got lots of attention, and there were a few newer cars including a new supercharged Z06 Stingray, the American Supercar. There was a touching tribute motorcycle, a Softail with custom rear fender, that the owner had painted every member of his Army unit who had paid the ultimate price for our Country. The large crowd was treated to live music, and good Bar-B-Que and cold beverages. Josh Lemon, owner of “Paint by Lemon was on hand showing off some of his incredible paint, and pin striping on the spot. The new 2016 Harley-Davidsons were on display, and the A-Team made sure everyone had a great time as always.

Two guys left the bar after a long night of drinking, jumped in the car and started it up. After a couple of minutes, an old man appeared in the passenger window and tapped lightly. The passenger screamed, “Look at he window. There’s an old ghost’s face there!” The driver sped up, but the old man’s face stayed in the window. The passenger rolled his window down part way and, scared out of his wits, said, “What do you want?” The old man softly replied, “You got any tobacco?” The passenger handed the old man a cigarette and yelled, “Step on it,” to the driver, rolling up the window in terror. A few minutes later they calmed down and started laughing again. The driver said, “I don’t know what happened, but don’t worry; the speedometer says we’re doing 80 now. ”All of a sudden there was a light tapping on the window and the old man reappeared. “There he is again,” the passenger yelled. He rolled down the window and shakily said, “Yes?” “Do you have a light?” the old man quietly asked. The passenger threw a lighter out the window saying, “Step on it!”They were driving about 100 miles an hour, trying to forget what they had just seen and heard, when all of a sudden there came some more tapping. “Oh my God! He’s back!” The passenger rolled down the window and screamed in stark terror, “WHAT NOW?” The old man gently replied, “You guys want some help getting out of the mud?” This Halloween I met a genuine Fairy that said she would grant me one wish. “I want to live forever,” I said. “Sorry,” said the Fairy, “I’m not allowed to grant wishes like that!” “Fine,” I said, “then I want to die after Congress gets their heads out of their asses!” “You crafty bastard,” said the Fairy. On the night of a Halloween costume party a couple were arguing, having trouble picking suitable outfits. After a while the wife got mad and stormed out of the room. Fifteen minutes later she came back completely naked except for a lemon between her legs. The husband looked at her for a moment and then stormed out of the room himself. Twenty minutes passed and then he stomped back in, completely naked, with a potato around his penis. The wife gave him a weird look, and the husband quickly replied; “If you’re going as a Sour-Puss, I’m going as a Dictator”. 22

A couple, both age 78, went to a sex therapist’s office. The doctor asked, “What can I do for you?” The man said, “Will you watch us have sex?” The doctor looked puzzled, but agreed. When the couple finished, the doctor said, “There’s nothing wrong with the way you have sex,” and charged them $50. This happened several weeks in a row. The couple would make an appointment, have sex with no problems, pay the doctor, then leave. Finally, the doctor asked, “Just exactly what are you trying to find out?” “We’re not trying to find out anything,” the man replied. “She’s married and we can’t go to her house. I’m married and we can’t go to my house. The Holiday Inn charges $90. The Hilton charges $108. We do it here for $50...and I get $43 back from Medicare. One dark night Bubba & Buck were walking home after a party and decided to take a shortcut through the cemetery, just for laughs. Right in the middle of the cemetery they were startled by a tap-tap-tapping noise coming from the misty shadows.Trembling with fear, they found an old man with a hammer and chisel, chipping away at one of the headstones.“Holy cow, Mister,” Bubba said, after catching his breath, “You scared the crap outa’ us, we thought you was a real-time, ghost! What the hell are you doing working here so late at night?” “Those idiots!” the old man grumbled. “They misspelled my damn name!” Three vampires walk into a bar. The waitress comes up to them and asks them what they’ll have. ? The first vampire says, (Transylvanian accent inferred) “I’ll have a glass of O Positive.” The second vampire says, “I’ll have a glass of O Negative.” The third vampire says, “I’m the designated driver. I’ll just have a glass of plasma.” The waitress turns toward the bartender and yells, “Gimme’ two bloods and one blood lite!” Q: Why did the vampire need mouthwash? A: She had bat breath. Q: Why wasn’t the vampire working? A: He was on his coffin break. Q: Why did the vampire’s lunch give her heartburn? A: It was a stake sandwich.

BIKE OF THE MONTH

1969 Triumph 650 Tiger

Congratulations to Chad Venable on winning our monthly Bike Contest on Facebook!

I built this bike in 2013 with help from my brother Bo Venable. Bo lives in Alabama and he did all of the paint. After he painted it, we loaded up all the parts in the back of my Ford Explorer and I headed back to Nashville from Valley Head Alabama. I got home around 8:00pm and my wife Angela and I unloaded all the parts and brought them straight to the kitchen where she left the operation to me and went to take a shower and off to bed. Somewhere around midnight that night she woke up to get a drink and to her surprise there was a complete motorcycle in her kitchen. That’s when I asked her the big question, I said with all the tenderness I have in me, “do you mind helping me get the bike out the back door and down the steps before going back to bed?” Well obviously she did, she didn’t want it sitting in her kitchen any longer than it had to and here it is today. I have since given the bike to my 11 year

old nephew Skylar Venable, the son of my brother Bo. Skylar thinks it’s the coolest bike ever and the color of the bike is his school colors! I was in Waterloo for the Trail of Tears Motorcycle Ride with no phone service all weekend so he knew before I did that the bike had won. My mother said his eyes lit up and it’s all he has talked about since seeing the post on Facebook that the bike won. Now he can’t wait to show all his friends at school that his motorcycle won and is in Thunder Roads TN Magazine. Thanks to everyone that voted and for bringing joy to my nephew who can’t wait until he is old enough to ride it! If you have a cool custom bike you would like to have featured in our magazine, enter it in our monthly contest by submitting a pic of your bike to ThunderRoadsTn@gmail.com

STURGIS 2015... THE 75TH ANNUAL STORY AND PHOTOS BY “T” COLLIER

As I traveled over 900 miles to Sturgis 75th Anniversary Rally from Oklahoma, I began to think how I loved riding with no mapped route except north and west to Sturgis. I found myself thinking how many others have made a similar trek for the past 75 years. The numbers were mind boggling as I thought 1.5 million predicted in 2015, half that, quarter this, three times that, goes into this, STOP!!! Just ride! Stop thinking about numbers, bills, deadlines and just ride north or west! Enjoy the view. Smell the smells. Feel the cool glimpse of relief of the seldom overhanging roadside treelines. Relax my furrowed 26

brow as I turn north again away from the setting sun on the horizon. Muffled laughter fills my full face helmet as a colt chases a cat across the field. My eyes spread wide as the crop duster clears the highway just ahead dumping a spray onto a nearby crop that causes me to sneeze. My, hidden by helmet, smile widens as a young, bright eyed child in a passing car bumps his forehead on glass as he points his tiny finger at me mouthing “mot-or-cy-cle”. I turn back West to see the sky painted in brilliant purple, pink and orange hues against the blue skies of South Dakota. I’m almost there after ThunderRoadsTennessee.com

this long high mileage day on the super highway of life! Yep! I’m headed home for two weeks. Home, that is, to my vagabond family of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally goers. Something happens to me when I get on my bike, Thor, for the long road North. I feel like I want to stay on that bike forever. Long journeys put my mind at ease. While my family and friends fret and worry with daily chores and worldly problems, not to mention that I’m miles away without accountability, I am riding free of worries other than where my next fuel stop may be and what snack I’ll be eating with Occtober 2015

my cold water and occasional Dr Pepper. This is only a part of the description I give when people ask me, why I like going to Sturgis every year. But, what about when I arrive? It’s wonderful and the excitement builds with every passing bike. This year, our group stayed at the home of a wonderful couple in Spearfish. They rent rooms to riders who want a comfortable place to stay while enjoying the rally. Many people in the areas surrounding Sturgis do this as there are not enough rooms available otherwise. After unpacking the bike, one of the first things I did, was go to Main Street Sturgis where I helped Design Wraps set up the store for sales. Sarah, myself and a couple other lady riders took shifts throughout the first week. It was my first experience vending in Sturgis and I must say, it’s exhausting. Week two, was time to cover the rally and out to the Buffalo Chip we went and picked up

coolness happening. The Broken Spoke Saloon and Campground also hosted us to bands, bikes games, a giant swimming pool party daily, book signing by Jessi Combs and Kayla Koeune, art displays and the induction of Billy Lane into the IMBBA Hall of Fame. I enjoyed a morning in Deadwood at the Biker Belles event where the highlight for this year was a celebration of Gloria Struck’s 90th Birthday Party. She’s an original Motor Maid and has ridden to Sturgis for decades, including this year. Another afternoon in Deadwood, took me to the Legends Ride. These two events were hosted by The Buffalo Chip. I took a few days hosting the Scootin’ America group once they made it to town. We were able to meet up with friends from Altus, OK who they had met riding through Oklahoma. We took a long afternoon ride through Spearfish Canyon, Deadwood and back in to Sturgis to a favorite little

our Media Passes so we could get the best shots of their many attractions. This is the world’s largest motorcycle campground and it is rocking every single day and night! It’s amazing the things that happen in one week. We got to experience the breaking of Evil Kneivel’s 22 car jump record; a 1,000 bike and human art creation; concerts of top names; Rat Holes Bike Show and the list goes on! And this isn’t the only place that has great amounts of

main street dive. To that point in their journey, they’d made it nearly halfway through all the Harley-Davidson Dealerships and have raised over $110,000 for American Legion Legacy Scholarship Project. They plan to complete the journey in 2016. I finally took time to attend the Gypsy Pine Hill Climb. This was the 75th year for the hill climb and as you may deduct, it’s been around as long as the rally. Actually, the rally came along with the Hill Climb. I was so excited the morning of the hill climb, I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. Actually that didn’t happen until I packed the cameras on, hiked my way up the 45 to 90 degree hillside, ducked out of the way of flinging rocks and captured the action. It was hard to stand upright on the hill, let alone the bikes speeding from the bottom to the top in 8 seconds! The times these guys were turning on these bikes were amazing and I loved it. The last day was filled with riding, fun, a Def Leppard concert and packing up to leave. While many were ready to race away from Sturgis as fast as they could, I was happy that we didn’t pull out of town until mid afternoon, muscles aching, exhaustion setting in, a head full of memories and a big smile! As I rolled East, I was already making plans as to where I will stay next year, who all I saw this year and if I got their contact info….here I go again…Thinking! Just hush up, smile, kick back and RIDE! Ride back to Oklahoma and encourage others to experience life on the long road. 28

MONGOLS MC PATCH FORFEITURE CASE DISMISSED In a long-awaited decision with ramifications that could affect all patch-wearing clubs, on September 16, 2015 Federal District Judge David O. Carter issued a dismissal of the government’s most recent attempt to seize the Mongols Motorcycle Club’s name and patch. In the case titled United States of America versus Mongols Nation, Judge Carter saw the key legal question in the case as the “distinctness” between a “person” and “an ‘enterprise’ that is not simply the same ‘person’ referred to by a different name.” In layman’s terms, the good news is that the government’s indictment is hereby dismissed pending appeal, which appears unlikely. “We won,” said Richard Lester, a California-based attorney who has rallied support for defense of the patch forfeiture case through various Confederations of Clubs around the country and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists, organizations he helped to establish. “We didn’t win the day on key legal points, and the court’s decision didn’t make the statement we wanted to make in defending the patch, but we won.” The protracted litigation against the Mongols MC on racketeering charges began October 21, 2013 when the indictment against the club was unsealed. Although the club won its first trial, the judge’s ruling was poorly written and welcomed the charges to be properly re-filed. While the constitutionality of seizing the Mongols insignia -or the insignia of any motorcycle club -- remains unresolved under the dismissal, Judge Carter did rule that the government cannot indict a club as an “enterprise” for racketeering without also indicting a group who can be actually punished; noting that the indictment makes “no meaningful distinction between the association Mongol Nation and the enterprise of the Mongols Gang,” which is good news for all motorcycle clubs. The prosecution, and subsequent persecution, of the club as a whole was designed to bankrupt the Mongols with mounting legal fees, but money has been raised by both the Mongols club and through the “Save the Patch” effort launched by the COCs and NCOM, and the Trademark Defense Fund I will continue to accept donations until the enormous debt is retired or if needed for a governmental appeal. 30

CONGRESSIONAL MEASURE ADDRESSES MOTORCYCLIST SAFETY A Congressional sub-committee has approved two motorcycle safety measures for inclusion in the federal highway bill; one to de-fund motorcycle-only checkpoints, and another to prohibit the DOT from lobbying on any pending legislation. On September 10, the Subcommittee on Research and Technology of the U.S. House Science, Space and Technology Committee passed the two amendments to the “Surface Transportation Research and Development Act of 2015” to be incorporated in the House version of the surface transportation authorization bill. Amendment No. 036 directs a study to be conducted to determine the most effective methods of preventing motorcycle crashes, and further bars federal funding to states to conduct motorcycle-only checkpoints until the research is completed. Amendment No. Transportation from or local legislation. prevents the federal

037 prohibits the Department of lobbying on any pending federal, state The current “NHTSA Lobby Ban” only DOT from lobbying at the state level.

The U.S. Senate’s version of the highway funding bill already contains language to prohibit federal funding of motorcycleonly checkpoints. PAINTED MESSAGES AT ACCIDENT SCENES TO SPARK AWARENESS Coroners in six counties in North Carolina will soon use a stencil to spray paint on the road a cross and message that says; “Look Twice Save A Life” at the scene of all deadly motorcycle accidents. Anderson County Deputy Coroner Don McCown said he hopes this warning message prominently displayed at fatal accident sites will increase awareness and decrease the number of accidents involving motorcycles. “We’re hoping it will remind the public that someone died at this location, and more than likely they died of distracted driving or someone not being aware of their surroundings,” explained McCown, adding that the number one reason given for most deadly motorcycle accidents is that the driver never saw the rider. “There are a lot of motorcycle riders out this time of year and we have to share the road.” ALLSTATE DONATES WARNING SIGNS AT DANGEROUS INTERSECTIONS Allstate insurance company and its engineering partners are

working closely with local traffic authorities to review available crash data and to identify intersections with a high number of multi-vehicle crashes involving motorcycles. Allstate then donates warning signs to be installed at the site with the intent of elevating awareness of motorcycle incidents that would not be readily apparent to a driver.

Australian Standards. In other words, as far as Victoria Police were concerned, it’s as if the rider wasn’t wearing an Australian Standards-approved helmet at all. In all Australian states and territories, motorcycle riders must wear a helmet approved by Australian Standards while riding.

The warning signs used in the campaign are yellow diamond warning signs that read “Watch For Motorcycles.” Allstate worked in conjunction with the Federal Highway Administration to design the current sign to ensure compliance with section 2A.06 paragraph 13 of the M.U.T.C.D.

As a landmark ruling by a Victorian court, the decision effectively bans motorcycle riders in that state from wearing helmets with cameras attached, but meanwhile police in other states enforce the laws much differently.

The NHTSA (National Highway Safety Administration), in their Fatality Analysis Reporting System, supports the Hurt Report’s findings, showing 46% of all multi-vehicle motorcycle crash fatalities (8,107 out of 17,470 fatalities from 2006-2012) occurred at intersections. This data shows that, on average, three motorcyclists are killed every day from multi-vehicle crashes at intersections in the US. MOTORCYCLE HELMET CAMERAS “ILLEGAL” DOWN UNDER A motorcycle rider “down under” unsuccessfully challenged a citation for using a camera attached to his helmet, setting an important legal precedent for riders in the Australian state of Victoria. Victorian police cited a technicality within the rules to argue the camera was an “unauthorised alteration” to an otherwise Australian Standards-approved helmet. Items that protrude more than 5mm from the helmet surface are deemed illegal attachments, the police argue, and therefore render the helmet non-compliant with the October 2015

So while riders in Victoria are now fair game and have even reportedly been fined for attaching tinted visors to their helmets, and New South Wales police have already been targeting riders for wearing cameras, police in Western Australia and Queensland wear helmet cameras themselves -- the very act that has seen motorcyclists fined in NSW and, now, Victoria. “Riders tell us they wear helmet cameras to improve their safety while on the roads and that drivers and other road users show more care when there is a camera in use,” said the rider’s lawyer, who is considering an appeal. “Riders should not be penalized for trying to improve the safety of their riding,” he said, adding that cameras are also ideal for capturing evidence during a collision. 8 Thin Cut Pork Chops, but with a 1/8th inch band of fat around entire chop (ask Butcher to cut special if need be) In a large non-stick skillet, add a large pat of butter a medium drizzle of Olive Oil over medium high heat. Wait till butter gets a tad light brown and add chops. Work them so they all fit in the pan. Now just let them sit. Don’t be playing w/ them or lifting them. Meat will always let you know when it’s ready as it will release from pan very easily. Once you flip them they will be a gorgeous caramelized brown. Sprinkle Cinnamon over each one after they’ve cooked on other side for apprx. 90 seconds. Then take a quality syrup and drizzle just a few motions across each chop. Remove from pan to a dish to rest and add 1/2 cup of water to pan to deglaze pan and use rubber spatula to push up any stuck to meat pieces. This makes a fabulous sauce. Pour generously all over chops. Serve hot. These are incredible! If you want to offset the sweet then add a pinch of Cayenne Pepper to each chop. Perfect!

PARMESAN CRISP BAKED APPLES

1 Can of Sliced Apple Pie Filling 1/4 Cup Grated Parmesan Cheese 3 Tbls. Quick-Cooking Oats 2 Tbls. All-Purpose Flour 2 Tbls. Brown Sugar Dash of Nutmeg & Dash of Salt 1 Lg. Tbls. Butter; melted Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a small glass baking dish rub or spray bottom w/ butter. In a small bowl mix cheese, oats, flour, brown sugar and nutmeg. Stir in melted butter until crumbly. Gently spread entire mix over top of apples. Bake uncovered for 12-15 mins; until bubbly and golden brown. Remove and grate more Parmesan cheese all over top. Fabulous.

SUPER SIMPLE PUMPKIN SOUP

2 Cans of Pumpkin Pie Filling 1 Cup of Half & Half 1/4 Stick of Butter 2 Tbls. of Cinnamon 1/2 tsp. of Nutmeg 1/4 Cup of Quality Syrup In a medium-large quality pot on top of stove, add all ingredients and mix by hand gently or use one of those battery operated liquid mixers. Let it get good and hot but do not burn. Pour into (4) soup style bowls or mugs w/ handles and top with thin slices of peeled apples sprinkled with cinnamon and baked in oven for several minutes. Simply Delicious!

E-Z MINI CARAMEL APPLE CHEESECAKES

Base: 1 Cup of Graham Cracker Crumbs 2 Tbls. Sugar 1/4 tsp. Ground Cinnamon 3 Tbls. Melted Butter Cheesecake: 2 Cartons of Whipped Philly Cream Cheese 1/2 Cup Sugar, 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract, 2 Large Eggs; lightly beaten. Topping: 1 Large apple; peeled and finely chopped 1 Tbls. Butter, 1 Tbls. Sugar, 1/4 tsp. cinnamon & a dash of ground cloves, 1 Cup of Butterscotch Caramel Ice-Cream Topping Preheat oven to 350. Line 12 muffin cups with white paper liners. In small bowl, mix cracker crumbs, sugar & cinnamon. Stir in melted butter. Spoon 1 rounded Tbls. of crumb mixture into each muffin cup and press down with a narrow bottom glass; like a shot glass to get it firm. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese & sugar until smooth. Beat in Vanilla. Add eggs, beat on low speed just until blended. Pour over muffin pan crusts. Bake 15-18 mins. until the centers are set. Cool in a high sided pan; just add water half way up of muffin pan. In a small ceramic bowl, nuke apple with butter, sugar and cinnamon for only 2 minutes and piping hot. Remove and stir in Caramel Topping. Remove mini cheesecakes and place 2 on each plate and put the Caramel sauce out for people to drizzle as much as they want over their mini cheesecakes. These are SO yummy and once you’ve made a couple times will only take you a flash to make.

Bullet Points

MYTH VS FACTS ABOUT SUPPRESSORS (NOT SILENCERS) necessary in order to preserve your hearing is the greatest benefit. Using suppressors to teach young children to shoot making the day a much more enjoyable. Being able to talk and not yell at one another is a great instruction tool.

Wikipedia defines a Suppressor as: A suppressor, sound suppressor, sound moderator, or silencer is a device attached to or part of the barrel of a firearm or air gun, which reduces the amount of noise and visible muzzle flash generated by firing. Suppressors are typically constructed of a metal cylinder with internal mechanisms to reduce the sound of firing by slowing the escaping propellant gas and can also slightly increase the speed of the bullet.[1][2] Can I legally own a Suppressor? Yes, while the process is not a fast one, you can legally own a suppressor. If you live in one of the 39 states in which you can legally own a suppressor, please exercise your rights and do so. I recommend doing the research and talking to your local gun stores, and figure out what will work best for you. Research is easily accessible on the Internet on the subject (Google suppressor and a variety of websites are dedicated to the subject), as Suppressors have become very popular in the last few years. Websites such as SilencerCo.com or Advanced Armaments website http://www.aaccanu.com have current laws and regulations on who and how to purchase, including the Federal laws associated with the purchase of these tools used with firearms. The first step in buying a suppressor is finding a gun shop that carries the brand that you like and is compatible with your rifle or pistol. When you find your local dealer, you begin the long process of purchasing your suppressor. Does a suppressor make my rifle silent? This is a myth that many believe to be true, that is perpetuated by movies. You can put a suppressor on your pistol or rifle, but it will never be silent. They do make specialized ammunition that is designed to be fired through a suppressor and it is much quieter, but still not silent. Suppressors are used by the military and law enforcement in order to lesson or deaden the sound coming from a firearm. It is difficult to pin point where the shooter of a suppressed rifle is, which can be a great benefit to a sniper trying to stay concealed and shoot his rifle. A Suppressor has the added benefit of reducing the muzzle flash (or fire that leaves the barrel) after you fire a weapon. This is a benefit for those who fire their firearms in ranges or close proximity to others. Using your suppressor on the range makes your experience that day a pleasant one. Not having to wear oversized ear protection or something uncomfortable but

Can law Enforcement come into my house at anytime if I own a suppressor? No the Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms agency or Law Enforcement agency in your area cannot enter your home simply for owning what is considered a class IV firearm, or suppressor. If you are using a suppressor on a range and you attract attention from either law enforcement or curious onlookers, it is always wise to have your completed paperwork (tax stamp) with you. If I travel out of state with a suppressor do I have to inform the ATF? If you need to travel out of your home state for any reason with your suppressor, you do not need to inform the ATF. However, any other NFA (National Firearms Act Machine Gun, or Short Barreled Rifle SBR) registered firearm that is moved between states, form 5320.20 will have to be filled out and sent to the ATF. Can my local Law Enforcement deny my purchase of a NFA item or suppressor? Your local law enforcement agency does have a signature line on the Form 4 when filling out paperwork for an individual from the ATF. If your area is suppressor unfriendly, you can start what is called a gun trust. The benefit of having a gun trust is family members can use the suppressor, You can pass the item down in your will if the family member is able to own an NFA item, the process of purchasing a NFA item is stream lined for people who have a gun trust, and the time spent waiting has been reported to be significantly shorter with those filing for an NFA item when using a Gun Trust. I would recommend finding a lawyer in your area that has experience in creating a gun trust and getting the facts from the expert on that subject. It is best to do your research and speak to those who have gone through the process before undertaking the arduous task of a class IV purchase. It is your constitutional right to own firearms please do so! Education is the key to navigating the system of dealing with buying a suppressor. I am by no means an expert on the subject so please check your local laws and have a strong understanding of them to protect yourself.
