I LOVE FALL RIDING… Fall is one of my favorite times of all to go riding, especially in the mountains! I love the crisp cool air, the smells are wonderful… smoke, leaves, moist grass and the beautiful colors of the leaves changing, it’s so peaceful, relaxing and a great way to reduce stress. Speaking of the mountains, Scott and I will be celebrating our 28th wedding anniversary on the 18th and we will be taking a welldeserved break and heading to Gatlinburg for a couple of days. Of course we will be working while we are there, but we will squeeze in some time for us too. There are so many things happening this month that I’m excited about… One is Halloween! I love decorating the porch, dressing up and passing out goodies to all the little trick-or-treaters. I already have my costume too. Since this month is also Fire Prevention Month and Scott is a Firefighter/Engineer, I found a sexy fire girl costume, woohoo! Be sure and change the batteries in those smoke detectors!! Our daughter lives in Canada and only gets to come home to visit about once a year and her, and her husband are coming home for a whole week at the end of the month. We cannot wait to see her, the last time we saw her was last November so we are so excited! Another happening this month is Breast Cancer Awareness… This is very near and dear to my heart as I lost my grandmother to breast cancer, my younger sister, a very dear cousin, and two special friends are battling the disease right now. I think we all know someone that has lost the battle, is fighting the battle, or won the battle. That’s why it’s so important that ladies get those yearly mammograms and we all should do something to help with the cause to find a cure for this cruel disease. We at THUNDER ROADS TENNESSEE are proud to say that we are joining in on the cause to find a cure by attending a Breast Cancer Awareness Ride that one of our local Harley dealerships is sponsoring. Everyone should do something to help, whether you attend a rally, a ride, or any event, you can show your support. OK, I said in the last issue I was going to tell you a little more about Scott and I, so since it’s our Anniversary month, I’ll tell you the story about how we met because everyone thinks it’s so sweet. At the end of my senior year of high school I was training to be the bookkeeper at an optical store in Nashville. One day while I was there training, Scott just happen to stop in to pick up his pay check because he was off on vacation, he was also home from college, in-between semesters. He sees me from across the store and starts asking everyone who the new girl was and they all told him, they also told him to leave me alone because I was dating someone, well, he didn’t listen. He went home that night and while eating dinner with his mom, she asked him what he had done all day, he replied, “I saw the girl that I’m going to marry today.” She replied, “WHAT?” and “what’s her name and where did you meet her?” He said, “I didn’t meet her, I just saw her from across the store and I know that I’m going to marry her one day!” Well the rest is history! He obviously won my heart, he is my soul mate and best friend, forever and always. Twenty eight years and still going strong! I know, a little too mushy for some :) Taz aka THUNDER DAWG is still enjoying his new role, although he is getting old and having a hard time getting around, but he is hanging in there! Well this has been one busy month! We have attended many events and bike nights, we have some new advertisers and our ever so amazing faithful ones. We are GRATEFUL for each and every one of you, ADVERTISERS, READERS, CORRESPONDENTS, TONI, BRIAN, and MERRY! Without you all, this magazine would not be possible!! Everyone please have a safe and happy Halloween and hopefully we will see you at one of the MANY AWESOME EVENTS happening this month!! Ride Hard Live Free, Denise & Scott

HARLEY-DAVIDSON®

LIVEWIRE

arley is touring its Project LiveWire concept, electric motorcycle, seeking rider input as to the concept and design. One of the stops was at Boswell’s Harley-Davidson, in Nashville, where I took the opportunity to take a test ride. Trust me; this is not a wimpy electric motorbike. Electrics are the new trend in motorcycles, including the Lightning LS-218 super bike sporting 200hp, 495 lbs. weight, and a top end of 218 mph. Yamaha, Suzuki, Zero, Bultaco and others are following the trend. While not in competition with the LS-218, the LiveWire is very quick and nimble. Its motor is rated at 74 hp (more than an 883), 0-60 in 4 seconds, and a top speed of 92 mph. From experience, I can vouch for the warning not to twist too fast on the throttle. The torque of this machine is remarkable (53 ft/lbs) and immediate. It will set you back in seat, with almost immediate acceleration from 40 to 70. Also, as the motor is direct drive, there is no shifting. When you first get on the bike, and light up the all computer monitor display and “start the engine” by flipping a switch, you know this is going to be an interesting ride. While I found the foot peg position awkward, as it is “sport bike”, while I am “cruiser”, it would just require a little getting used to. The sound isn’t “Harley-esk”, but rather sounds like a turbine. (Per Harley, the sound at 60 mph is louder than any stock exhaust Harley, so it isn’t quiet enough to sneak up on unsuspecting cars). Back off of the throttle and it slows rapidly, making brakes almost unnecessary. I say almost, as the brake light doesn’t come on when you back off, so unless you flash with the brake, your buddy behind you will get a real surprise. While the prototype’s range of 53 miles and recharge time of 3.5 hours, with the 240v adapter, would be sufficient for commutes to work or school, it is a long way from being a long-haul bike. I am confident that when Harley puts it into production, the range will be improved. Overall, this is a fun bike! The low profile makes cornering a dream; that combined with its light weight makes it easily handled by a small person; and its quickness makes it exciting. The current mirrors are unusable, but that’s an easy fix. Overall, I really like the LiveWire and I would love to see how a production model turns out. To see other demo sites, see HarleyDavidson.com. The latest issue of HOG Magazine has an article on a Route 66 on a LiveWire and hints at the addition of charging stations. Appleton Harley-Davidson® Stop

W

hen most people think of the Cannonball Run, they think the 1970’s scofflaw races started by Car and Driver Magazine’s Brock Yates, memorialized in his movie, starring Burt Reynolds. Actually, the race is named for Erwin “Cannonball” Baker. In 1914, “Cannonball” set a coast to coast record of 11 days on his Indian Motorcycle. Today, Lonnie Isam, Jr., owner of Jurassic Racing, of Sturgis SD, is holding the third Motorcycle Cannonball Run, limited to pre-1937 motorcycles. Unlike the movie, this is a timed endurance race, with planned overnight stops, and even a rest day. It averages 262 miles a day, shunning interstates.

and it was soon filled with bikes needing repairs. First of the still running 95 riders to arrive was #75 Dan Emerson, of Woodstock CT, on his 1936 Harley. He was originally entered on a 1925 Henderson, but he said he found the Harley, in a barn two months ago and had to give it a try. On his way from Chattanooga, his old leather saddlebag fell apart, scattering his tools down the road. However, #35 Hans Coertse, of South Africa, was holding onto his first ranking, on his 1924 Indian Scout. # 80 Shinya Kimura, of CA, has ridden his 1915 Indian Side Valve in all 3 Cannonball Runs. Ouch, his original seat is a narrow strip of metal with a thin leather cover. He required a quick welding job, in the shop, to continue. Danny Suiter pointed out some of the requiring repairs were # 26, Thomas Trapp, a Harley dealer from Stuttgart, Germany, a 1916 Harley, #33 Adnreas Kaindl, Germany, a 1924 Henderson Deluxe, and # 98 Cris Sommer Simmons, Hawaii, a 1934 Harley JE. To ride these antique bikes, you either have to be a mechanic or have a good buddy who is. One rider asked Mary Rose for chain oil. It’s not exactly a popular item these days, so she was hoping they had some.

The course of the 2014 Run was 3,938 miles, starting in Daytona FL and ending 17 days later in Tacoma WA. On September 8, the riders arrived at Appleton’s Harley-Davidson, in Clarksville TN, after a 237 mile run from Chattanooga. Isam said that the riders really appreciated the catfish and chicken dinner (catered by Southern Touch), music (provided by Kevin Walker and Jason Runyon), and hospitality (provided by Appleton’s and its guests), as a pleasant change of pace. The number of spectators attending the Appleton stop exceeded expectations, with some riding over 4 hours to see the international entrants. Appleton’s cleared the service area for the event

Other international entries came from France, UK, Canada, S. Africa, Poland, Spain, Ireland, Japan, and Italy. # 28 Kevin Waters of E. Norwich UK, riding a

1935 Sunbeam MG met #34 Pete Reeves of London UK, riding a 1929 Harley JD, met at an AMA event and live 160 miles apart, decided to enter the Cannonball. Their wives travel together in a chase vehicle. The earliest entry was # 56, Victor Boocock’s 1914 Harley. Two of the more unusual bikes were: #48, a 1936 Sokol 1000; and #110, a 1926 Rudge. Many thanks to Tia and Danny Suiter and Mary Rose for accepting the challenge of hosting this stop, giving us the opportunity see these remarkable machines. ur subject for this month is a native of Historic Franklin, Tenn. He is Ewell Thomas Perry, III & I have known & rode with Tom for years. What inspired me to do an article on Tom was a very cool photo he posted on Facebook recently of him back in 1971 on a chopped out mini bike. Tom began riding two wheelers just like his two big brothers, Phil & Bruce, in 1971 when he bought the chopped out Mini bike for $40. I love the curved front forks on bike. :) Soon Tom got a 1965 Honda 65 that was his first street bike & he did like many of us have done, traded up for bigger, better, & faster bikes. In 1999 he purchased his first Harley, a brand new Sportster. He liked the bike but it was soon destroyed when a police officer blew through a red light & took him out!!!! Used his insurance money to buy a cool 2000 Springer that he rode until he traded it in on the 2008 Electra Glide Classic he rides today.

Tommy’s mini chopper 1972

Tom is self-employed with his Perry Garage Door Service in Franklin. He is married to great lady who rides her own bike as well, Melissa Savage. They have ridden together for years & got married at Christmas in 2013. Tom was married before & had a son, Thomas Ryan Perry. The best part of having a child is the fantastic chance that they might soon bring you a grandchild. Tom has a little 7 year old grandson, Talan, who loves to ride as well. Talan has a pocket rocket that he flies up & down the driveway in. (Everyone knows that if we grandparents had known grandkids were so much fun we would have had them first.) Ride on Perrys & I›ll see y›all on the road soon. If you know anyone who has a few old photos of their early rides who would like to be featured in this article please let me know. You can reach me at 931374-8368 or celticgranda@yahoo.com. Ride safe & often people!!!!!

“Frustration” Frustration can simmer like a pot on a stove until it boils over into anger. Have you ever put all you had into somebody, some job, some church, some club or organization only to fined out that nobody really cared what you put in or what you accomplished? Given them your very best only to get nothing in return? In Numbers 20:1-13 we read the account of Moses’ frustration with the Children of Israel, but first let’s look at Moses’ past to get a better understanding: Moses was born a Jew and when he was born the Pharaoh of Egypt tried to kill him as an infant, his mother placed him in a basket and placed him in the river, there he was found by Pharaoh’s daughter, she kept him and raised him as her own in Pharaoh’s house. Moses was a Jew but he was raised as an Egyptian prince, well educated, had everything he could ever want, but Moses knew he was a Jew by birth. One day he saw an Egyptian beating a Jewish slave, Moses stepped in and killed the Egyptian, Moses now has to run into the wilderness for forty years to hide. After forty years God sends him back to Egypt where he is wanted for murder. Moses now leads all his people (Jews) out of Egypt into the wilderness. The first problem they run into was the Red Sea, and all the Jews turn on Moses with their murmuring and complaining. Some want to kill Moses, but God bails them out. As they run into more problems, the same thing keeps happening; they murmur, complain and want to kill Moses. Moses is getting very frustrated, he could have still been the prince of Egypt if he had minded his own business, or at the very least he could have stayed in the wilderness and let the Jews take care of their own problems.

October 2014

Now he is at the end of his rope and runs into the exact same problem. God gives him direction in vs. 8 “ Take the rod and gather the assembly together…and speak to the rock before their eyes and it shall bring forth water.” Moses does everything God told him to do but, because of his frustration, he makes a mistake. Vs. 10 “Moses gathers them together before the rock and he said unto them, here now ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock…and he smote the rock twice.” But God said to “speak to the rock,” Moses took it upon himself to “speak to the people… and hit the rock twice.” Moses was so frustrated that he misinterpreted God’s direction and God judged him; “Because ye believe me not… ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.” Sometimes we, out of frustration, will strike out at the very people we love when God said to “SPEAK TO THE ROCK.” Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

ALABAMA (“BAMA”) WHITE BBQ SAUCE This is SO delicious and can use on/in all kinds of ways then just on chicken. Cluckin’ A. 2 Cups of Quality Mayo (*or Miracle Whip) 3 Tbls. Horseradish; Fresh or Bottled 4 Tbls. Apple Cider Vinegar 2 Tbls. Lime Juice; Fresh or Bottled 1 tsp. Sugar or Splenda 1/2 tsp. Cayenne Spice 2 tsps. Salt (Kosher or Sea if want) 4 tsps. Ground Black Pepper Mix it all up, slather it all over your chicken, lay on a REALLY hot grill to get good grill marks, then move to the side to cook slowly. Slather more on before serving. SMOTHERED CHICKEN IN CAST IRON My Mom (my beloved Guardian Angel) used to make this once a week and I remember walking in, the smell filling up the entire house, and knowing that I was definitely staying home for supper. In A HUGE cast-iron skillet, med. high heat, add: Enough quality Olive Oil to just cover the bottom of pan. To this add 3 good size pats of butter or quality margarine 1 Green Pepper; cored and med-thin slices, then cut those in half 1 Red Pepper; same way 1 Yellow Pepper; same way 1 Huge Sweet Yellow Onion; medium chop 1 Box of Sliced Mushrooms; pat dry and add last 1/2 Lb. of Bacon; fried crisp, drained and put aside Saute’ up all your veggies. Use slotted spoon and remove to a side plate. Make up a spice mix of palmful of: cinnamon, basil, parsley, salt, pepper, coriander, celery salt, garlic powder, and whatever else you really like. Pat chix good & dry; rub spice mix all into chicken, really good. Let just rest while you’re sauteing veggies. After removing veggies, put your chicken in; skin side down, cook until deep golden brown, flip and turn heat down to low, add veggies back in so that they encircle chicken, not covering. Just let go like 40 minutes, slow and low, until bottom golden brown and then, at end, flip chix back over and 14

top each piece generously with rough-chop bacon and kinda’ press down. Next add your favorite cheese on top of bacon. My mom (and me) always used Monterey Jack but you can use Cheddar, Pepper Jack, Baby Swiss or Brie....whatever; you’re the Cook. Put a lid on it to let cheese melt and a good trick is to just add a like 3 Tbls. of water to mix and then cover and it creates this heavenly steam chamber. Let go 5 mins. Remove lid and slide skillet off of heat and just let it rest for 5 mins. * I didn’t say this in the beginning but use whatever pieces of chicken or even a whole chopped up bird. I only do wings as they have the most amazing flavor. But a couple breasts thrown in would be good also. This is freakin’ INCREDIBLE! All those veggies, this awesome flavored chicken so tender it literally falls off the bone, the skin is infused with sauce and spices, and then there’s this gravy that’s created that is a silky wonder. This is food that creates forevva’ memories. And that’s what cooking is all about. BALSAMIC PORTABELLO MUSHROOMS Portabello ‘shrooms are SO meaty, you could serve them as an entree. But I like as a side dish. Costco or Sam’s Club is your best bet to get BIG ‘shroom caps. Take a teaspoon and run it all along the inside to remove all that “fuzz” up under the inside lip. Now, take a damp cloth and rub them down good. Do Not Wash under water as you’ll end up with a limp shroom and nobody wants that. Fry up a tube of sausage, your fave brand, drain and put aside. Add shrooms, cap side down to drippings, add couple pats of butter and med. heat saute’ till golden brown both sides. Drain bottom down for 10 mins. on paper towels. Stuff with chopped purple onion and sausage mix. Place back in skillet and top with your favorite cheese. Do the lid trick again; couple Tbls. of water and tight lid it for 5 mins. Remove to serving dish, drizzle reduced down till thick, quality Balsamic Vinegar over top. This is flayva’! K.I.S.S. STRAWBERRIES & ANGEL CAKE BIG quart of big, totally ripe, delicious s-berries. Slice thick. Discard tops cut. Sprinkle sugar or Splenda all over the top in a flat, glass dish. Pour white corn syrup all over generously and let hang out in fridge for about 3 hours. Buy you a gorgeous Angel Food Cake, slice it up, pour your fabulously reduced down strawberries and tons of delish “sauce” over & top with real whip cream

URGENT:

Help reunite CWD Jjoe and Sgt. Hulsey!

When Sgt. Hulsey applied to be a handler for a contract working dog in Afghanistan in the fall of 2010, he didn’t realize how strong of a bond he’d form with his four-legged partner. But that all changed when he met CWD Jjoe. For the next seven months, the two became inseparable as they searched for and identified explosive devices in Marja, Afghanistan. But sadly the pair was forced to part ways in the fall of 2011, when Jjoe was sent back for another tour while Sgt. Hulsey was set to retire and come home to U.S. soil. Now, CWD Jjoe and Sgt. Hulsey have the opportunity to meet again in just a few days. With your help, we can make that happen! Please make a donation today so we can reunite Jjoe and Sgt. Hulsey in Dallas, TX where the heroic contract working dog can join his former handler in well-deserved retirement. These working dogs do so much to ensure the safety of not only our country, but the humans they serve with - it’s estimated that each dog saves the lives of between 150-200 soldiers through the detection of IEDs and weapons caches. It is our mission to ensure the safe return of every military and contract working dog after their selfless service to our nation is completed - but we can’t do it without you. Your generous gift, made today, will help bring these two heroes back together, and will also allow American Humane Association to continue all of our programs to protect our nation’s children and animals. Thank you for helping us reunite CWD Jjoe and Sgt. Hulsey, and for your support of American Humane Association! With gratitude, Robin R. Ganzert, PhD President and CEO

WEST TENNESSEE VALLEY RALLY August 2014 By Mechele MacDaniel for Thunder Roads Tennessee

A

dream that became a reality! Mike Owen had a dream years ago of putting together a bike rally that people would truly enjoy and look forward to year after year. One again, this year proved without a doubt that Mike’s dream is now a reality. When we arrived at the rally we were greeted by the WTVR staff and Mike and Barb. It was great to see them and the well-organized team they always have working the rally. The camping areas were full of bikes, tents, and campers of all shapes and sizes. We took a stroll through the vendors and saw everything from motorcycle parts to clothing to jewelry to food and drinks. All needs were provided for including ice, beer, water and firewood delivered to each camp site upon request. On Friday afternoon, Iron Warriors did bike games followed by The Band Benefield with an evening show by Stormgate. Bar games were announced all throughout the day. Never a dull moment at Mike’s rally! Then on Saturday Dixie Thunder Run held a Poker Run that included 23 bikes. Bar games all day again. Iron Warriors had bike games in the afternoon followed by the annual bike show that for 4 years I have had the honor and great pleasure of judging. This year the cojudge and a very nice gentleman,

Peeple. Thanks Pop’s! You are a great judge as well! The winners of each class were, Best MetricScott Payne, Best American- Tim Rorie, Best Original- Brandon Rorie, Best Paint- Jason Harrison and Best of Show- Robert Warren. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all who entered the show. Buschwackers Band played throughout the afternoon breaking for a very moving Salute to our soldiers that was followed by an evening performance by The Kimberlee Helton Band to wrap up the final night of the rally.

It’s hard to believe that it has been 4 years since the first WTVR. Hat’s off to Mike, Barb and their team for an amazing job of organizing and running a wonderful rally. One of the best I’ve ever attended and had the honor of being a big part of. In speaking to Mike after the rally, Mike Owen – Owner/Founder of WTVR he wants everyone to know how very grateful he is for your support and that without you the rally would not be possible. A special thanks to all the vendors and bands and to Dana Lynn for always being my right arm and helping with everything during the rally. And a great BIG thanks to Doc Rick for the beautiful accommodations and for providing the BEST after party! I’m sure next year will be even bigger and better. I’m certainly Co-Judge of Bike Show looking forward to it. Hope to see everyone there! You really cannot afford to miss was John “Pop’s” this one!

by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: Operation Stand Down Tennessee, Inc. (OSDTN), formerly Operation Stand Down Nashville, is a 501c3 corporation whose mission is to assist Veterans and their families so they can be self-sustaining and better connected to the community. As a private corporation OSDTN relies on grants, donations and fund raising to provide services to Tennessee veterans. You can learn more about this great veteran’s service organization at www.osdtn.org On October 25, OSDTN will hold its annual Boots Ride to help raise money for veteran support. The ride will start at Cool Springs Harley Davidson, 7128 S Springs Dr, Franklin, TN 37067, (615) 771-7775. Registration begins at 8:30am and kick stands up at 10am. From the dealer the ride will run to the Natchez Trace and roll about 90 minutes to the River Rat Grill in Hohenwald. Events at the River Rat include great food, a raffle and other activities. Some really great prizes have been donated by Cool Springs Harley, Cycle Gear, Boswell’s Harley, Bumpus Harley, Appleton’s Harley, Heroes vodka and more. Registration is $20 per bike and each entry receives a goody bag with ride patch, coupons and other great stuff. There will be coffee and snacks to eat before the ride. October 25th also marks the 31st anniversary of Operation Urgent Fury, the US led invasion on the island of Grenada in the Caribbean. My good friend Captain Keith Lucas became the first Night Stalker killed in action there. Grenada is one of many small combat operations that have taken place in Central America or the Caribbean over roughly the last 100 years. Others include the Dominican Republic in 1914, 1914-24, 1965, Costa Rica 1921, Cuba 1912,1917-22, 1933, 1961,1962 Mexico 1913, 1914-17, 191819, Haiti 1914, 1915-34, 1994-95, 2004, Nicaragua 1910, 1912-25, 1926-33, El Salvador 1981, Honduras 1911, 1912, 1919, 1924, 1925, 1983-89, Guatemala 1920 and Panama in 1912, 1918-20, 1921, 1925, 198990. Two more of my Night

Stalker buddies, Lt. John Hunter and CWO “Sonny” Owens died in the fight in Panama ousting General Noriega. When was the last time a community held a parade for any of these actions? The Beirut Barracks Bombings on October 23, 1983, in Beirut, Lebanon occurred when the Islamic Jihad attacked separate buildings housing United States and French military forces in Lebanon. 299 American and French servicemen died in the bombing. This took place just two days before the Grenada invasion. We commemorate all of the major combats that our service members have been involved in but commemorations for the small actions to protect Americans on foreign soil or to strike enemies of the United States before they can harm American’s are often overlooked. For those who participated and the families of those who were wounded and killed these events become the most important of all. Often unnoticed and forgotten by most of the country they are every bit as important to the defense of our nation as the major combat actions. We get the impression that our military only does big things but that is not true. We have service members deployed somewhere in the world on important missions every day of the year. Many are humanitarian in nature but all are dangerous and American service members go in harm’s way. Some are injured or killed and nobody ever knows except the family and those who were close. I guess for me Veterans Day is the catch all day that honors all of America’s veterans who have served in the past and those who serve today. Nashville will hold its regional Veterans Day Parade at 11am on November 11, 2014. I hope you’ll attend a veteran event or at least thank a veteran for their service on this important day and never forget we walk the street with heroes who have done amazing things in service and went back to a more normal life after. HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHO TO MARRY? (written by kids; who always tell it like it is) You got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like, if you like sports, she should like it that you like sports, and she should keep the chips and dip coming. Dennis, age 10 -No person really decides before they grow up who they’re going to marry. God decides it all way before, and you get to find out later who you’re stuck with. Terri, age 10 WHAT IS THE RIGHT AGE TO GET MARRIED? Twenty-three is the best age because you know the person FOREVER by then.. Beth, age 10 HOW CAN A STRANGER TELL IF TWO PEOPLE ARE MARRIED? You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be yelling at the same kids. Kelly, age 8 WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR MOM AND DAD HAVE IN COMMON? Both don’t want any more kids. Derek, age 8 WHAT DO MOST PEOPLE DO ON A DATE? Dates are for having fun, and people should use them to get to know each other. Even boys have something to say if you listen really long enough. Jody, age 8 (Precious) On the first date, they just tell each other lies and that usually gets them interested enough to go for a second date. Vernon, age 10 IS IT BETTER TO BE SINGLE OR MARRIED? It’s better for girls to be single but not for boys. Boys need someone to clean up after them. Lil’ Rhino, age 9 (Bless you child ) HOW WOULD THE WORLD BE DIFFERENT IF PEOPLE DIDN’T GET MARRIED? There sure would be a lot of kids to explain, wouldn’t there? Mike, age 8 (Good point) And the #1 Favorite is ....... HOW WOULD YOU MAKE A MARRIAGE WORK? Tell your wife that she looks pretty, even if she looks like a dump truck. Andrew age 10 If your husband tries to fib to you then maybe he should be run over by a dump truck. Renee, age 9 10. WHAT SHOULD YOU DO TO MAKE SURE YOUR MARRIAGE WILL ALWAYS BE HAPPY? Maybe take vacations....apart. Bob, age 10 You could always have a party but tell your husband that he can work late. I saw a Fortune Teller the other day. She told me I would come into some money. Last night I banged a girl named Penny. Is that spooky or what? Whoa, dude. Three vampires walk into a bar. The waitress comes up to them and asks them what they’ll have.? The first vampire says, (Transylvanian accent required) “I’ll have a glass of O Positive.” The second vampire says, “I’ll have a glass of O Negative.” The third vampire says, “I’m the designated driver. I’ll just have a glass of plasma.” The waitress turns toward the bartender and yells, “Gimme’ two bloods and one blood lite!” Myron Greenberg, a wealthy L.A. businessman received a letter of Audit from the IRS. It really upsets him and he called his Accountant, Saul Meyers. Myron (pleading): “Saul, what are they doing to me? Why are they doing this to me?” Saul (calming): “Myron, don’t worry about it. I’ve got all the receipts, the account is up to date, it’s no problem. But let me give you a bit of advice. When you go to the Audit, make a bad impression. Wear the crummiest, dirtiest clothes you’ve got. Have holes in your shoes, ripped pants and look shabby. I mean really look terrible, because if they have a little sympathy, they’ll go easy on you.” Then Myron called his Lawyer, Charlie Steinberg. His Lawyer said: “Myron, it’s no problem, I’m sure they got the receipts, I’m sure everything is up to date, you’ve got a great Accountant, don’t worry about it. Let me give you a tip. When you go to the Audit, it’s very important that you make a good impression. Wear your best suit, and your shirt with a silk tie and cuff links and shine your shoes, look like somebody. Because if you look like a “somebody”, they respect you, and will go easy on you.” And now he’s torn. And that night he bumped into his Rabbi at the Deli. And Myron told the Rabbi his dilemma. Rabbi: “Myron, it reminds me of sometimes when I perform a wedding. The bride’s father will tell his daughter that on her wedding night to wear a nightgown with a high collar and long sleeves and a full-length robe...cover up, you know, be a little demure. And the mother says, ‘Don’t be silly. Wear a low cut “negligee” with the cleavage sticking out -- look a little sexy’... and, Myron, I will say to you just like I say to the bride on her wedding night; it makes no difference what you wear, you’re gonna’ get f***ed.

Bullet Points Geared for Women Courtesy of Wolverine Shooting Sports, Inc. ~ Dani Sparks

In traditionally male dominated activities, like riding and shooting, women have often had to adapt to the more masculine styles and larger frames of motorcycles and guns. This has begun to change in some very exciting ways! Harley Davidson® is now creating styles of motorcycles designed specifically for the female rider, and gun manufacturers are producing guns and accessories that are more feminine in appearance. From the pink and purple framed Rugers, to the Muddygirl camouflage designs, and the EAA Witness Pavona with the frames that sparkle, feminine styles are coming out in a big way. Women like to ride and shoot, too, and the industries are taking notice

For a long time, the biggest complaint of women who carry concealed is that holsters are designed for men, and don’t adapt well to the female body or clothing styles. Many women have resorted to purse carry, and there are plenty of high quality purse holsters produced by manufacturers like Galco and Gunleather. That being said, not every woman carries a purse, and there are inherent dangers in carrying a purse holster, as purses tend to be the target of robberies. Within the last few years, more and more holsters have been produced specifically for female concealed carry, giving women everywhere the option to dress in feminine styles and carry a firearm on their person.

26

Many feminine holster designs have hit the market, but one of my favorites so far is the Uncle Mike’s Garter Belt thigh holster. Why is it my favorite, you may ask? This sleek little holster is designed for the micro pistols, and is one of the very few holsters which can be worn with a dress. This holster has elastic at the top, similar to many thigh high nylons, designed to grip the leg for better security while carrying. While the delicate lace design will require use of a sturdy garter belt (the elastic isn’t quite enough on its own), and some additional training is certainly required. This holster answers the question of, “How do I carry a gun on my person if I want to wear a dress?” I am still hoping for some sturdier designs to hit the market, enabling carry of guns a bit heavier than the micro .380’s, but this is definitely a positive step for female concealed carry.

LITTLE RED RYKER

Meet, Ryker… A firecracker of a redhead with loads of personality!

R

yker is 2 years old and was born with a rare disease called Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Also known as Brittle Bone Disease. This bone disease affects the collagen in your genetic makeup, so no amount of milk/ calcium will fix it. Ryker also has a rare severe recessive form of O.I. listed as Type 8. There are only 5 recorded type 8s in the USA. He was born with over 18 counted for in uterine fractures. During birth his neck and left tibia were fractured. Since then Ryker has broken over 40 bones, resulting in many physical setbacks and progressive bowing. Ryker can’t sit up, roll over, walk, crawl or stand. O.I. has also affected his muscles, severely. He just gained head control around 18 months and could hold his own bottle around 19 months. Ryker receives 5 therapies a week to build endurance, strength and work on speech. Ryker and his family travel anywhere from 45-100 miles a day for these appointments. Every 8 weeks, for 2 days Ryker receives an IV infusion of a bisphosphonate called Pamidronate. Bisphosphonates help strengthen the bone and reduce bone pain. Each of these infusions make an 8 hour day at the hospital. In December of 2013 Ryker had FD rods placed in his femurs at Childrens Hospital of Omaha Nebraska. They travel 15 hours one way there for a yearly clinic of O.I. specialists and all surgeries. Before Ryker’s femurs would break from practicing to sit. He never raised his legs because his bones couldn’t hold them. Two months after bilateral femoral 28

rodding, Ryker was touching his toes! Since September 2013, Ryker has fractured his humeri at least 20 times. They fracture from picking up his paci, touching his face, reaching for a toy, it doesn’t take much. September 10th 2014 Ryker and his mom and dad, traveled back to Omaha, NE for his yearly O.I. clinic and on September 16th 2014, Ryker had his humeri rodded. As awesome as insurance is, there are many things they don’t pay for. His family fundraises yearly to help with some of these expenses. Deductibles, copays, medical travel are just a few. Currently they are fundraising for a ramp for their

vehicle to get Ryker’s power chair in and out, a ramp to build onto the house, brakes for his manual chair, lateral support and backrest for his manual chair, medical travel for his next surgery (tibias). All in all, around $5000. The list could go on forever really. He’s constantly needing things adjusted or adapted for his size. With all this being said, Ryker is still just like any 2 year old. Crazy and strong willed. This may be a long road he travels but he will never travel it alone. On September 13th, The American Legion Post #75 in Portland TN and the Sons of the American Legion Post #75 hosted a 100 mile ride for Ryker. It was awesome, with over 60 bikes and even some cars showed up in support of the 1st Annual Poker Run for Ryker. Also, the American Legion Post #75 in Portland TN hosted a benefit for Ryker on September 20th with a silent auction, food, and live band. All proceeds went to Ryker for his upcoming surgeries. If you would like to help little Ryker roll, please go to www. gofundme.com/littleredryker and donate, every little bit helps and is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help and for spreading the word about Osteogenesis Imperfecta. On behalf of Tommy, Thera, and little Ryker we would like to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts… Thunder Roads Tennessee Sponsored by TNT Custom Paints (see ad)

THE AIM/NCOM MOTORCYCLE E-NEWS SERVICE is brought to you by Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM), and is sponsored by the Law Offices of Richard M. Lester. If you’ve been involved in any kind of accident, call us at 1-(800) ON-A-BIKE or visit www.ON-A-BIKE.com. NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) FLORIDA STATE FAIR SETTLES CIVIL RIGHTS LAWSUIT In a big win for motorcycle club members nationwide, the Florida State Fair and local law enforcement were dealt a stunning blow when they agreed to settle a Civil Rights lawsuit filed by Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) attorney Jerry Theophilopoulos (“Jerry T”) on behalf of the East Florida Confederation of Clubs. The Florida State Fair and Fair employees, along with two Hillsborough County Sheriffs agreed to pay three members of the West Florida Confederation of Clubs a total of $72,500 to settle the case after nearly a hundred club members were denied entry into the fair by off-duty sheriff’s deputies on Feb. 7, 2010 based on the fact they would not remove their colors. A posted policy banned “club colors” and the bikers were threatened with jail if they attempted to enter the front gate of the fair, and AIM lawyer Jerry T. captured the entire event on film with a videographer, which was a pivotal reason the federal lawsuit was settled out of court. “This settlement is a great day for all motorcycle club members, not only in the state of Florida, but across America,” said Jerry T., “We sent a message that our people will not be discriminated against in a public forum.” After the lawsuit, the no-club-colors signs were replace by a posted policy stating that the fair may turn away or eject people who are disruptive or who display behavior associated with “criminal gang membership.” That cleared the way for bikers to attend subsequent fairs. MORE MOTORCYCLES EQUALS SAFER ROADS According to the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA), an increased number of motorcycles on the road results in a lower rate of serious accidents. When 10% or more of vehicles on the road are motorcycles, mopeds or scooters, there is a proportionate reduction in rider fatalities, says Steve Kenward, CEO of the MCIA, a motorcycle trade association in England. Japan has 98 bikes per 1,000 vehicles (9.8%), and for every 1,000 bikes on the road, the country has 0.8 motorcyclist fatalities per year. In Europe the ratio of bikes to cars is lower, at 73 per 1,000 (7.3%), and the rate of motorcyclist fatalities is higher, at 1.52 per 1,000 bikes. In the USA, the ratio of bikes to cars is just 27 per thousand (2.7%) and the motorcyclist fatality rate is much higher, at 5.32 per thousand 30

bikes. Kenward told how “volume breeds safety” at the recent National Safer Roads Partnerships’ Conference, where police forces, local authorities, government officials and academics meet to discuss road safety. There is also a growing body of evidence that those who start their motoring career on motorcycles make better car drivers. With congestion on the rise, Kenward explained that getting more motorists on motorcycles would result in a “virtuous circle” leading to better road users. According to their research, an increase in motorcycle use has also been proven to keep traffic flowing. A study which models traffic for one of the busiest roads in Europe concluded that if just 10% of drivers swapped to powered two wheelers (PTWs), congestion would be reduced for all road users by 40%. Increase that number to 25% and congestion is eliminated entirely. SIKHS DENIED EXEMPTION FROM ONTARIO HELMET LAW Motorcycle-riding Sikhs in Ontario, Canada will not be exempted from the helmet law, Premier Kathleen Wynne has ruled. The Canadian Sikh Association received a letter from Wynne stating the Liberal government, for safety reasons, will not allow Sikh motorcycle riders to wear only turbans as two other Canadian Provinces currently allow. The Ontario Highway Traffic Act requires all motorcyclists to wear a helmet. This poses a problem for those of the Sikh faith, whose turbans don’t fit under most helmets. “After careful deliberation, we have determined that we will not grant this type of exemption as it would pose a road safety risk,” Wynne said in her letter dated Aug. 14. Wynne said safety trumps religious freedoms in this case. “As you know, the issue of balance between religious accommodation and public safety has been considered by the courts in Ontario which, on this issue, have found that Ontario’s mandatory helmet law does not infringe on the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, nor the Ontario Human Rights Code,” she said. In 2008, an Ontario judge ruled against a human rights challenge launched by a devout Sikh who was fined $110 in 2005 for not wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle. NDP MPP Jagmeet Singh (Bramalea-Gore-Malton) said he was “deeply disappointed by Premier Wynne’s decision not to grant an exemption to motorcycle helmet laws for turbaned Sikhs. Similar exemptions already exist in the United Kingdom, Manitoba and British Columbia, and here in Ontario the idea is supported by members from all three caucuses.” MSF MOTORCYCLE SAFETY STUDY TO IMPROVE COUNTERMEASURES The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) has announced that the data-acquisition phase of the MSF 100 Motorcyclists Naturalistic Study is now completed, and preliminary results

The MSF partnered with the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute on this world’s first, large-scale, naturalistic motorcycle riding study. The 3.5-year study began by collecting data from instruments installed on motorcycles owned by study participants as the bikes were ridden in normal day-to-day use. Sensors and video cameras recorded all motorcycle operator inputs such as steering, acceleration, braking and lean, as well as recording all motions of the motorcycle, current riding conditions and the actions of surrounding traffic. The motorcycle instrumentation was designed to be as inconspicuous as possible, so that participant-riders would forget their rides were being monitored. “The MSF 100 study is being conducted to support motorcycle safety research, with particular emphasis on results that offer ongoing guidance in rider training,” said MSF’s Director of Quality Assurance and Research, Dr. Sherry Williams. “The study utilizes a naturalistic methodology that provided researchers with information captured by instruments installed on one-hundred motorcycles ridden for a combined nine-thousand-plus hours by real riders in real riding conditions.” The MSF 100 Study, which tracked participants in Virginia, California, Florida and Arizona, is expected to be a rich source of insight for years to come on a wide range of questions and points of interest for an international array of safety professionals generally, but riders and rider safety professionals specifically. All 100 riders on their equipped motorcycles have completed the data acquisition phase of the study, and the analysis phase is now yielding preliminary results. 2014 RUSHMORE ULTRA LIMITED REVIEW And how I ended up on an Ultra

S

By Scott

everal years ago Denise had to have big time back surgery. A couple of years before I’d gotten a 2000 Road King Classic, I loved that bike. The first warm Sunday of spring after her surgery, we went riding with some good friends to eat lunch, we didn’t ride far, but when we got home, she looked at me and said “I can’t do this.” I said “what?” She said “ride this bike, the backrest hurts my back.” My idea factory went into overdrive, I started mumbling something about a leather tour pack, but she cut me off and said “just go buy an Ultra classic.” There it was, she said it. Now unlike some people, this wasn’t something I wanted to hear. I didn’t want one, didn’t like the idea of the fairing or the radio or any of the other features. Riding a motorcycle with the wind in your face listening to the motor is raw, exciting and, well you know what I mean. I had a dashboard in my truck, I didn’t want one on my bike. So naturally I started looking. I ordered a 06 Ultra Classic, I didn’t want it, didn’t want to like it, but I ordered it. I even kept the Road King for a while after I got it. I went to pick it up and they came out to show me all the buttons and do dads, but all I wanted to know was how to turn them off. I rode it home, took the lowers off, and said “let’s go get something to eat.” We got on and she said “turn the radio on.” Now this is my motorcycle, I am the captain of this ship whether I like it or not, I want to listen to the motor not the radio...so of course I turned it on. What happened next, and how it happened is a little fuzzy, but shortly after that I found myself cruising through the mountains, stereo blaring, cruise control set, lowers on, and leaning back against a backrest with my feet on highway pegs, my girl on the back, her feet stretched out on her own highway pegs and fully packed for a week long ride in pure luxury. I, no, WE were hooked! Fast forward to 2014, it’s time for a new bike. Now you know I just can’t ride without my creature comforts, all that wind in your face and no cruise control or stereo just listening to the motor drone on and on seems pretty barbaric, so we went and checked out a 2014 Ultra limited. They have added a bunch of new features, some I wanted, some I didn’t. I decided the good outweighed the bad for me so we bought it. By the time you read this, the Rushmore bikes will be a year old and the 2015’s will be out, and I’ll have put a lot of miles on this bike, so here is what I think of the 2014 Rushmore Ultra Limited for what it’s worth. We went to pick the new bike up, the guy came out to show me all of the gadgets, I was already linking my smart phone to the Bluetooth while he was going over the buttons and switches and how they were different. The buttons on the new touring bikes are totally different and there are more of them, but before I got home I was pushing and clicking without looking down at the controls. I was a little worried that the Boom Infotainment center would be distracting, I just knew I would be staring at 32

this T.V. screen in front of me all the time, I really don’t. There is no need, the nice lady in the box tells you everything you need to know. The windshield is smaller but the vent in the front of the fairing works, the windshield doesn’t flex like the old bikes did when speeds get up close to the ton, (which this bike does much easier) and the head buffeting is noticeably less. The stereo is a lot better than the old unit, it sounds clearer with more base response, the speakers are larger and the rear speakers are vented to the tourpack so it sounds like it has a little base kicker in it. The usb/iPod connection is a nice touch, hidden in the compartment next to the screen which by the way will hold an iPod and a garage door opener. The navigation is pretty good too, it will get you from place to place but I’ve heard from people that are serious GPS users it’s not great for planning multi day, multi stop trips, but besides just going from place to place, I mostly to use it to get home after I get lost on purpose. It’s also nice to be able to see who’s calling you so you can decide if you need to pull over and return the call or not. Sometimes when I’m going to be out all day I even plug the headset into the intercom system and talk on the phone while I’m riding, I’m on the road a lot so I see it as a tool to keep me out of the cage. The handling is, for me, the biggest improvement, especially above parking lot speeds, it was a little sketchy at first because it’s so different but once you get used to it, it’s GREAT. The neck bearings are bigger, and the triple tree is redesigned. The fork legs actually clamp at the top now instead of the old way the fork legs slid in with a cap screwed down on them. The biggest change as far as I’m concerned is the 49mm fork legs compared to the old 43mm, there is a lot less flex in them. I’m sure it’s a combination of all the changes they made, but it just works. There is a curve I hit often. It’s getting off the interstate onto a parkway and it’s a high speed sweeper with a bump where the pavement turns to concrete bridge. On my 06 the bump would start a headshake at 50 and the bike would wallow all the way through the turn. I don’t know how different this bike is from the 09-13 frame, but from my 06 the difference is huge. The first time I hit “the curve” I covered the brake and got ready to back off the gas and went in at about 65, halfway through I was doing

70 and grinning. For me, that makes the whole thing worth it. This thing is a blast in the twistys for a big bike and makes my last bike seem like a wallowing pig. Now from Denise’s perspective, they didn’t just spend all of their time making the bike better for the rider, they actually put some serious thought in to the back seat also. She says there is a lot more room, and loves how the backrest is leaned back more and actually supports her lower back instead of just ending. When we first got it she leaned up and said “I can’t tell if I’m in the middle of the seat,” on our old bike both speakers touched her hips and my backrest touched her legs. On this bike she seems way back there and I could even move the tourpack back another inch if she wanted. Her calves touched the saddle bag guards on the old bike, one of the Rushmore improvements was changing them so they are out of her way. She can still change the radio station but I can turn her controls off. Overall she’s very happy with the changes, she hasn’t found one negative about it. Now for the part I didn’t want. Big twin Harleys have air cooled engines, full stop, end of story! There is no coolant, no water jackets around the exhaust ports, and most of all no radiators. I looked at the new Rushmore Limited and I have to admit, they’re well hidden. This bike makes more power and runs cooler stock than any Harley I’ve ever owned. I had gotten in the lazy habit of leaving my lowers on year round anyway, occasionally I would take them off and it felt like my feet were going to be blown off the floorboards. They were able to bump the compression up in the Twin Cooled motors and it’s noticeable. Stock, this 103 is almost as strong as my built 95” 5 speed. 5th gear pulls are impressive, 6th is too but not as much because it’s an overdrive. I did lug the crap out of the motor from stopped a few times until I got used to the higher first gear but if you are riding a 6 speed now it shouldn’t be a problem. I’ll know as soon as I get a chance to park it for a few days this fall and winter but they say this motor really wakes up with just an intake, pipes, slip-ons and a tuner. I’ll probably go a little further than that but we’ll see.

All in all, I like the new bike. It’s a big improvement over the previous touring bikes and makes my seven year old bike seem like a dinosaur. The one thing I just can’t seem to get used to is the new latches on the saddlebags. How many thousands of times have I reached down and flipped the hinge/latch up and grabbed the lid with both hands to flip it over. Don’t get me wrong, I love the new latches on the saddlebags and the tourpack and the one handed opening is great. Still, almost every time I try to open it, I reach down and grab a hinge that doesn’t move, then I casually look around to make sure nobody saw me, and grab the commode handle and open it up.
