The Pharaoh Attack Exodus 1:6-12 “And Joseph died…there arose a new king which knew not Joseph…they set over them taskmasters to afflict them.” The big question among Christians today is “Why does God allow the “Pharaohs” in our life to “Afflict us?” We first must know the difference between a “Satanic Attack” and a “Pharaoh Attack.” Phil.2:10 “At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow…” Luke 10:19 “I give you power over all the power of the enemy.” Therefore if you have “Rebuked it by the Word, pleaded the Blood by the Word, anointed yourself with oil by the Word, prayed the Word and read the Word,” then it is not a “Satanic Attack,” because it has to “bow the knee” and we “have power over the enemy.” Therefore it must be a “Pharaoh Attack.” If your read vs.12 “But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew.” God only moves in Multiplication, not addition. Sometimes God will send a “Pharaoh” in your life to get you to move out of your traditional rut. The Children of Israel had started to walk like the Egyptians, eat like an Egyptian and they were slowly becoming Egyptians. They were losing their identity as the People of God. If you will recall when the Children of Israel were in the Wilderness, they gathered up the gold that God gave them and “molded a golden calf” to worship instead of worshiping God. It just so happens that the Egyptians worshipped cows. The Children of Israel were not being afflicted because they were worthless, but because of their greatness. This Pharaoh didn’t want to kill them, he just wanted to afflict them. The devil leaves lazy people alone and they will destroy themselves with their own bad decisions. Often God’s direction is brought about by your own rejections. The Pharaohs in your life can bring out the best in you and you can learn more from your October 2016

Judas’ than from all the Peters in your life. Have you, as a Christian, been around the world so long that that no one recognizes the difference between you and the world? Have you, as a child of God, become an Egyptian? The former “Pharaohs” in your life could be an ex-spouse, ex-friend, ex-boss, ex-family member, sickness, debt, addictions and lack can all be a “Pharaoh.” I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank all the Pharaohs in my life. All my ex’s, everyone that has stabbed me in the back, all my former addictions, all the self-righteous people that talked about me, THANK YOU! Like “The Children of Israel, I have multiplied and grew.” If you have not learned from your former “Pharaohs” then you are destined to repeat it. Remember “you might be among them, but you’re not of them.” Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site At various sites along the Santa Fe Trail, you can find many interesting places. Among these is the trading fort opened in 1833, by Charles and William Bent. Located on the Arkansas River, then border between the U.S. and Mexico, and currently a quarter mile down the Santa Fe Trail from Hwy 194 E, in La Junta, Colorado, the fort was a prosperous trading empire until 1849. During this time, the fort was popular with Cheyenne, Arapaho, fur traders, settlers, and soldiers. In the Council Room chiefs would settle disputes, among clouds of tobacco and kinnik-kinnik smoke. Also, supplies, cooked meals, blacksmith services, wagon repair, well water, cooled with ice from the river, a doctor’s office, for Edward L. Hempstead, guest rooms for selected guests, bastions and watchtowers, and billiards and gambling room, were available. By 1849, the trade was deteriorating, buffalo herds were in decline, cottonwood trees were gone and Plains Indians were plagued by bands of settlers, gold seekers, and soldiers, during and after the Mexican-American War. Battles with the Indians became more frequent and cholera was an epidemic. William tried to sell the fort to the U.S. Army, but was not happy with their offer. As a result, it is believed that he set fire to the fort and moved 40 miles down the river to Big Timbers (near present day Lamar) and built Bent’s New Fort in 1853. Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site was established in 1960. Reconstruction of the fort was completed in 1976, based on original drawings, historical accounts, and archeological evidence. The restored fort is very accurate, primarily due to

8

detailed plans, measurements, and watercolors of the life in the fort, made by Lt. James Alpert, Corps of Engineers, while he recuperated from an illness. He also sketched plants and wildlife in the area. Some wildlife--cactus, came in handy to top walls, giving anyone climbing over a prickly surprise. Self-guided tours are available year-round, and period dressed guides are often available. Many of the fort’s activities are reenacted along the tour. Be sure to check for special events held during the year. A movie shows the fort’s history in the Welcome Center (which reminds me of an anecdote). Signs warn that the animals are not to be approached or touched; however, some can’t help themselves. While we attempted to watch the movie, an obnoxiously loud woman, in the next room, made it very difficult to hear. Uncontrolled, first one son and then the other walked into the viewing room, where we sat with two young ladies, and paused in front of the TV. Then seeing a very large cat sleeping in the row between us, he attempted to grab the cat. Next thing we knew, the cat’s claws were attached to the boy’s ear and Jr Ranger vest. None of us rushed to his aid, he didn’t say anything and eventually his mother entered and removed the cat. One of the young ladies said “good cat”. My only reply was “cat 1-kid 0”. Karma does occur. And I, not a cat lover, have a favorite cat!

THE RACE O

By Ed Monroe Photos by: Triple Nickel Designs This past June I had the unique opportunity to road trip with Mike Silvio of Cyclemos Speed Shop out of Red Boiling Springs, TN and Matt Walksler of Period Modified Hailing from Smoky Mountains, NC. The destination was the small beachfront town of Wildwood, NJ with a trailer of vintage race bikes in tow. For the past few years a special band of hot rodders and motorcycle enthusiast have taken to the beach to participate in a spectacle known as The Race of Gentlemen also affectionately known as TROG. Founders Bobby Green and Mel Stultz not only set up a race, they create an experience where participants and spectators can go back in time. TROG pays tribute to a bygone era where the participants not only compete but honor the past with every race. The rules are simple. The machines must be American made, pre-WWII, built to race, and above all be period correct. No modern modifications are allowed. If that’s not enough to peak your interest, throw in car and bike shows, multiple vendors, nightly parties, a beach bonfire, and a Wall of Death set up right next to the track.

12

Walking through the pits is an experience words and photos can only attempt to describe. First and foremost it’s right on the beach. Just like in days of old, it’s all about the racing and not amenities. An area roughly half the size of a football field is filled with the sound and smell produced by 90 plus vintage race machines all having final preparations made to tackle the 1/8 mi track just over the berm. The other amazing thing to watch are the riders and drivers. These men and women come from far and wide to compete. Most only see each other once a year at this reunion of speed and it shows. Handshakes and smiles are everywhere. Fingers point to modifications made over the last year which are usually met with sheepish grins and laughter. Being a newcomer, I was welcomed with open arms and left the beach with new friends I can’t wait to race next year. Racing starts Saturday morning. This is a day of test and tune with flat out grudge matches taking place all day. Motorcycles kicked it off this year on a track that was under several inches of tide water just an hour before. The flag girl checked left, checked right, and dropped the flag. Twin rooster tails of salty sand flew into the air as a combined 150 years of vintage race machine tore down the beach. Just

OF GENTLEMEN

behind the starting line stands Joe Oz, the official ringleader of TROG, directing racers to their spots. Beyond Joe lies the staging area. This is where those smiling faces mentioned before have a game day look now. Everyone now stares right down the track while studying the course and envisioning the line they will take. Getting a feel for the track is just as much part of test day as tuning. SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY Bracket racing begins! Everything leads up to this point. Brackets are made and as the day moves on, racers are eliminated. Admittedly, my coverage of the event began to zero in on the friends I came with. The fellas were actually competing on 3 purpose built motorcycles built by Mike over the last year. Each rode knuckleheads in the big twin class and Matt piloted the extra bike in the 45 class. While Matt proceeded to quickly make his way up the 45 bracket an amazing story was unfolding. Race after race it became clear the finals were going to be two friends facing off. Matt took his final race on the 45 to claim the class title and then it was battle of big twins. Mike took the win which at that point was the closest race of the weekend. At TROG the final motorcycle race is a David and Goliath of sorts. A race pitting the Fastest 45 against the Fastest Big Twin. Once again they lined up, shook hands, and took the starting line.

October 2016

The flagged dropped and when they crossed the finish no one on the start had a clue. In what turned out to be the closest race of the weekend, Matt on the 45 took the win. Everyone went nuts! Not an ounce of jealousy was present. The guys made their way back to the start which at that point was already flooded with people waiting to congratulate them. It was pure vintage chaos complete with mid track sand flinging donuts, banner presentations, and comradery. To say it was a story book ending to an epic adventure is an understatement. Fast forward to this month. Mike, Matt and the other racers are all prepping to tackle another beach on October 15-16. This time it’s a left coast TROG in Pismo, CA. If you’re like me and can’t drop everything to attend I encourage you to follow them on social media but you can bet the bank I will be in NJ next year with dates to be announced. If you would like to see some of these machines in person, they and many other classic bikes are on display in Mike’s shop. It has a unique number on it- take note because that is YOURS and ONLY YOURS. Once you get your card, you do not need to register again. The Ride Cards do NOT expire so hold on to it. THIS WILL BE A YEARLY CONTEST, so you’ll need it next season too! 2. Once you have your Ride Card go to any or all of the stops listed this month and show them your card! We will be adding more Registration/Ride Stops and Ride Stops across the State every month, so make sure to pick-up your copy each month of Thunder Roads® Tennessee to see that month’s Ride Stops and also to see if your Ride Card is listed as a winner!

A FEW FACTS • • •

• • • •

Winners are randomly picked from each Registration/Ride Stop and Ride Stop. The more places you check-in the greater your chances are of winning a prize from that stop or one of our sponsors prizes! If you spend $10 or more at any of the Registration/Ride Stops or Ride Stops your Ride Card number gets counted twice! Please note: The reason why this contest is FREE to you, the rider, is because of our sponsors and stops. So we want to encourage everyone to support them in return. That is why we count your Ride Card number twice if you spend $10 or more. You can check-in 1 time each week at each Registration/ Ride Stop & Ride Stop. Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in. Some prize drawings are specific to only check-ins for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from checkin’s season long. ALL CHECK-INS remain in the system for end of the season prizes!

October 2016

Thunder Roads® Tennessee will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Bike Nights may have special booth for Ride Card registrations. We will list these events each month on the Event Stops page in the magazine. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives to those checking in with their previously issued Ride Card at these stops. Thunder Roads® Tennessee will also be working with charities and various nonprofit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events. The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all Stops. Some Thunder Roads® Tennessee Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads® will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your TENNESSEE RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! This is not simply a “Chinese Fire Drill” or maddash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.

JUST GET OUT AND RIDE! We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. If your business would like to be a Stop or be a Sponsor, please email us at TennesseeThunderRun@gmail.com

LET’S RIDE! As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at TennesseeThunderRun@gmail.com

Tennessee State Museum Flag Poker Run

By: Rebel Ron Photos by: The Scorned Woman & Dawn Taylor The Roderick, Forrest’s War Horse Camp 2072 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans of Springhill and the Tennessee Mechanized Cavalry group held its 11th annual benefit on August 20th to raise much needed funds to conserve Tennessee Confederate battle flags in the State Museum’s huge collection. We have raised over $100,000 to conserve 5 flags so far and working on number 6. The unique flag we need $20,000 to save is the Second National Confederate flag that belonged to the 11th Tennessee Infantry. We had a pretty good turnout for the ride despite the 80% chance of rain that day and we did get rained on a couple times during the 80 mile ride through the backroads of Middle Tenn. We met at 10am at Maverick’s Bar & Grill on Hwy 431 in Rally Hill, Tenn. If you are out riding in the future stop by there for great food, cold beer, pool, live music and much more. We took off at noon during a break in the rain and headed for the first stop in Thompson’s Station to get a history lesson on the Battle of Thompson’s Station in May of 1863. We gathered around the memorial statue to a horse that was killed in the battle that we took our camp’s name from. Roderick was the favorite horse of Tenn. military genius and hero, Nathan Bedford Forrest of Chapel Hill. The horse is buried near the monument. Then we took off through the winding tree covered back roads to the cool little town of Fly, Tenn. where we visited the fun country bar, Buffalo’s Logger Saloon. The owner of the bar use to be a rodeo performer and Buffalo Bill impersonator who did gun, horse, and bull whip tricks for crowds all over the world. One that he’ll do for you at his bar is have someone who is either brave, or stupid enough to hold a 6 inch piece of styrofoam in their hand and even their mouth

20

while Bill cuts it off with the whip. (I’ve seen Bill do this many times over the years but this was the first time I ever saw him miss. SCV member Billy Joe had a numb thumb for the rest of the ride but he was OK.) Go check this place out, great ride to it no matter where you come from. Headed to Mule Town to visit the Neon Moon in Columbia for an adult beverage, lots of laughs before heading back to Mavericks to see who won the poker hand, bid on items in the silent auction, enjoy the homemade meal of BBQ with all the fixins provided by the bar owner, Maverick Madden’s family, and laugh about riding in the rain and Billy Joe’s thumb. Mechanized Cavalry member Jordan Bowman won the $200 prize and quickly donated it back to the flag fund. Then we were treated to a fantastic fire hoop performance by the great lady that fronts the fun Phoenix Rising band, Miss Amy Brown. Thanks to some very cool items in the auction, a great Lynryd Skynryd LP signed before the plane crash, Jason Aldean guitar, and much more we raised over $5,000 this rainy day despite the crappy riding weather that kept the crowd down. We’d like to thank Maverick’s Bar for hosting our event, S & G Custom Cycles for allowing me work on this while I am supposed to be working, Handy Hardware in Historic Franklin for its constant support, Thunder Roads Magazine of Tenn. for helping promote our event, the volunteers who helped us, and especially the riders who braved the wet weather to help in this worthy project. Some of whom came from East and West Tenn. to help out and enjoy the scenic history filled ride. If you’d like to learn more or make a tax deductible donation to our flag fund, please contact Ronny Mangrum at celticgranda2@ yahoo.com, text or call 931-374-8368, or look for Roderick Camp 2072 on Facebook for more info.

By: Rebel Ron Photos by: Scorned Woman We left Peytonsville about 10am during a break in the rain. With an 80% chance of rain we knew we were gonna get rained on but on to Lebanon we went because we were not gonna miss the Rumble. We were more worried about the ludicrous gas shortest that began Sept 16th, when a major gas line broke further South, than we were about the wet weather. We’ve ridden in the rain a lot over the years but you can’t go far without gas. We arrived at 11am in a misting rain but there seemed to be plenty of vendors and displays like always. I reckon if your old ride already has rust on it, rain is of little concern, unlike the show car people. Crowd seemed

22

down a bit but the rain was about to pass and there were many hours to go yet. The creativity seen here, the friendliness, cool cars, trucks, bikes, wagons, and more is worth the visit. You will see many things that bring back memories for any and all Baby Boomers from vintage advertisement items to a truck that reminds you of Grandpa’s. And it is family friendly too. Better yet much of it is for sale because there are dozens and dozens of people buying, selling, and trading anything old or cool. They had a bike show going on, live music, indoor vendors, food vendors, slick ass custom built cars to rust covered old trucks and much more. Lots of interesting people here too.

And to top all that off they had a demolition derby to round out the night. After the public left I was told that several vendors and others who camped for the weekend had some great parties going on later that night. Gonna have check that out next time. Organizer Scooter Williams wanted to announce the winner of the “Not Rod Challenge” that went to Chris Cox with his clever Dodge creation. He also wanted to thank the folks who showed up in the less than perfect weather. He also wanted to give a special thanks to the Both Barrels crew who made all this happen for us. If you like working on you own bike, car, or truck, have an imaginative mind that appreciates other people’s creations, admire the older truly made in American vehicles then you’ll enjoy the Redneck Rumble. There are two Rumbles now, so go check ‘em out next year. Keep up with all of Scooter’s events at bothbarrelsproductions. com.

THE OUTPOST BAR & GRILL by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley

Quote; “The Tennessee River Trail, the latest addition to “Discover Tennessee Trails & Byways,” follows a path through some of Tennessee’s richest river country. The eastern gate of the route departs Nashville on I-40 west to Highway 13 for a visit to Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills and then on to Waverly, a historic railroad town complete with a Civil War Fort.” I can tell you that this is a really great ride once you get on Highway 13 and turn South. After you go through Linden it just gets better. Out in the middle of the country you’ll find the Outpost Bar & Grill at 2049 Highway 13 North, Waynesboro, Tennessee 38485. Phone number is (931) 722-7358. You can find them on Facebook at The Outpost Bar & Grill, Waynesboro, TN. The Outpost is a log building with a totem pole out front and a carved bear by the Stix and Slitz bathrooms. It’s big and comfortable. When you walk in you feel like you just got home. Wally Dunn and his wife Marne keep this place spotless and fresh. There is a dance floor, pool room, big bar and some of the best food you can imagine. Wally makes everything special and you can wash it down with one of his 41 different brands of ice cold beer. Everything begins as fresh meat procured locally in Tennessee. Wally says his gourmet burgers are his best seller and “We’re a bar with a high quality problem.” The burgers are all hand patted. He smokes his own ‘Almost Famous Damn Near Perfect Pulled Pork.” The Bourbon burger is my favorite but the Classic, Country, Fireworks and Baconator burgers are awesome too. So is the loaded Nachos and Deluxe BLT. Folks come from as far away as northern Alabama, middle and western Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas. It’s just a “have to” stop in God’s country. There is entertainment every Saturday night through November and great recorded music all day long. They open every day at noon but may open a little early on Sunday depending on when the sports and games are on. They have free pool, karaoke and dancing on Friday nights. Several years ago this used to be a rough place but when Wally bought it a couple of years ago he ran off the 28

trouble makers and now it’s just a fun loving and peaceful place to have a high class meal and rehydrate with some great refreshment and friendly people. You can check out what’s happening on Facebook to see what bands are playing and if Wally has smoked up some of his mouth watering brisket. When you get there tell’em Bulldog sent you. If you are out riding to eat and see me please come up and tell me your favorite places to go when you’re hungry and thirsty. “Will Ride to Eat” will be an ongoing article in Thunder Roads Magazine of Tennessee and we want to put the spotlight on the great history and variety of Tennessee’s biker friendly establishments.

Bike of the Month

2013 Harley-Davidson Softail Deluxe Congratulations to Roel Reyes on winning our monthly Bike Contest on Facebook! Hidden in a little town in South Texas called Rio Grande City, in the County of Starr, you can find my 2013 Softail Deluxe nicknamed “La Kandy Kane” for obvious reasons. My Bike started as a brand new stock Deluxe in December 2012 when it was purchased. It has come a long ways since then. I added the Harley Davidson 16 inch Fat Ape kit with chrome switches and housings along with stainless steel braided cables. The bike has the Harley Davidson solo seat and 42” Samson Longtails. I also added the Screamin Eagle Race Tuner along with the Screamin Eagle Heavy Breather with Chrome Cap. The bike’s riding height can be adjusted on the fly via ShotGun Shocks thanks to Jessica Kennedy. I also added all the chrome pieces I could find to the motor and to the frame. When riding at night, I can see clearly via Daymaker Head and Driving lights and all the other lights were converted to LED lighting plus the whole bike is covered in white LEDs to make sure I am seen at night. The license plate was relocated below the tombstone tail light and I installed a 1.5” Cobra Highway Crash Bar. When a car gets in my way, I make sure they hear me coming with my Rivco Air Horns. Last but not least, the bike was lowered in the front 1” and fitted with a 21x3.5 DNA fat twisted spoke wheel in front and a 16x3.5 DNA fat twisted spoke wheel in back with gold nipples and matching chrome rotors and pulley, wrapped in Avon rubber. A special thanks to “el aijado” Joel Garza for all his hard work and dedication in making “La Kandy Kane” what it is today. If you have a cool custom bike you would like to have featured in our magazine, enter it in our monthly contest by submitting a pic of your bike to ThunderRoadsTn@gmail.com October 2016

Bullet Points

HOME DEFENSE BASICS By the time you read this article, autumn temperatures will be beginning to make riding more comfortable. As I write this month’s article, Labor Day weekend festivities are at hand. While we had a couple of nice days to start the Labor Day holiday, today will be another sweltering day. I for one, am ready for some cooler riding weather and some autumn scenery. This month’s Bullet Points’ topic is home defense. Home defense is often an afterthought for many 2nd Amendment supporters who give a lot of thought to handgun carry topics. However, many of the most effective things you can do to protect your family, and home, involve no firearms whatsoever. Make sure all of your windows are locked – especially those on the ground floor If you have sliding glass doors, use a heavy doll rod, cut to proper length, in the lower channel of the sliding glass door to prevent it from being forced open If you don’t already have them, install commercial grade deadbolt locks on all exterior doors (the deadbolt locks sold by big box hardware stores are not commercial grade) Install adequate security lighting around your home’s exterior – most bad guys prefer to work in the dark Invest in a canned-air horn, like what is used by pleasure boaters (a couple of quick blasts of one of these horns will probably scare a home intruder away) If you do not have a home alarm system, consider having one installed. Besides securing your home more completely, you may also save a fairly significant amount of cash on your homeowner’s insurance Once your home is secure, you need to consider your defense plan in the event a bad guy is inside. The most important thing is for your family to come together in one place. My house is a two story structure with all of the bedrooms on one level. The meeting place is the master bedroom. By having everyone assemble in one location, in the event of an emergency, a headcount can be quickly taken – insuring that everyone is accounted for. Once everyone is accounted for, barricade your family in the room. I have a dresser I can slide in front of the doors. Call

October 2016

9-1-1. Remember, there is no need to search out danger. Stay put and protect your family. Now that my children are adults, and are out of the house, I keep a pistol on my night stand beside my bed. There are other pistols in a small gun safe in my master bedroom closet. But is a pistol the best choice for protecting yourself, and your family, within your home? My suggestion is to consider having a shotgun close by. Once you’re barricaded in your family’s gathering area, there is nothing that will cause the bad guy to turn and run like the sound of a shotgun being cycled. If you have done your job, up to this point, when the shit bag is trying to get through your barricade, he may well have an epiphany when he hears you cycle a round into the chamber of your shotgun. At this point, he may just turn tail and run into the police, who you recently called. There has been a lot of debate about what type of load you should use in a shotgun for home defense. I prefer something with a lot of pellets for the first couple of rounds. #6 or #7.5 shot is a perfect choice. In the heat-of-the-moment, if you were to need to engage a bad guy, there is plenty of energy in this type of load to quickly stop an intruder and give them second thoughts about staying around. From close range it is quite lethal and the blast pattern is effective. But, in the event that this does not stop the bad guy, the last couple of shells in my shotgun are #00 buckshot. If it gets to this point, one of these rounds will stop the most strung out zombie in its tracks. And in the event that it is a zombie apocalypse, I still have my .45 ACP on my night side table and other pistols in my small gun safe in the closet. In summary, have a plan for your family. Make sure all of your family members know where the gathering place is in the event of a break in. Once all of your family members are sheltered together, call 9-1-1. Give a couple of blasts on your canned-air horn. Do not search out the bad guy – let him come to you. Practice your plan a couple of times each year so your family instinctively follows the plan. Keep the shiny side up until next month! Molon labe, Mike Noirot

Ratchet and his wife are watching t.v. when a Slim Fast commercial comes on and he being a natural born smartass says, “hey, why don’t we try washing your clothes in Slim Fast and see if that takes some pounds off”. Now, Lucy is nobody’s fool, so she did a little midnight magic. Next morning when Ratchet gets up, has coffee and grabs a fresh pair of underwear to put on after his shower, he notices as he pulls from drawer that all this white stuff is puffing up in the air. “Lucy, why in the hell did you put talcum powder in my damn underwear?”. Lucy casually screams out; “It’s not talcum powder, it’s Miracle Grow”. _______________________________________________

Isabella, a very attractive and keen golfer, who lived in a villa on the golf course, heard the noise and called out: “Are you okay, what’s your name?” “They just call me Rooster, and I’m okay thanks,” he replied as he pulled himself out of the twisted cart. “Rooster”, she said, (firm loose breasts undulating beneath her white silky robe) “forget your troubles. Come to my villa, rest a while and I’ll get my help to get your cart up later.” “That’s mighty nice of you,” Rooster answered, “but I don’t think my wife would like it.” “Oh, come on now”, Isabella insisted. She was so very pretty, truly very sexy and very persuasive. He was weak. “Well okay,” He finally agreed but thought to himself, “my wife won’t like this.” After a couple of restorative Bourbon and waters, he thanked Isabella. “Rooster confessed, “I feel a lot better now, but I know my wife is going to be really upset. So I’d best go now.” “Don’t be silly!” Isabella said with a smile, letting her silky robe fall open quite a bit. “She won’t know anything. By the way, where is she?” Rooster replied, “Still under the cart, I guess”.

Why is it that when I have the remote in my hand and I’m cruising the channels looking for something to watch that just about every channel I hit has someone on it talking about the inequities of life and how someone else or society should fix their problems. It’s either how unfair it is that a large number of one race is in jail or how unfair it is that some people can’t afford to go to college or that some people should be free to go into the bathroom of their choice and on and on. What about the thousands of organizations that have formed to help these poor downtrodden folks raise money, hire lawyers and assemble marketing campaigns to put forth their grievances and attempt to use the courts to force the world to correct whatever it is they feel has been so unfair to them? Well I have a grievance!!! I think it is overwhelmingly unfair that I should have to listen to all this sniveling and whining at every turn! Whatever happened to the America where you were free to go forth, work hard and get somewhere? When did it become okay to sit on your ass on a street corner waiving a sign telling the world it’s not taking good enough care of you and what your demands are to make things right? I’m sorry but when I was raised I was told in no uncertain terms that the world is not fair, that if I didn’t earn food I’d starve and that if I wanted anything during my life I’d have to work for it. I was also told that if I kept putting one foot in front of the other and sharpened my eye for opportunity that I could climb the ladder of society and go as far as I wanted to go. That is true now more than ever but it’s not the message that is being splattered all over the politically correct television channels. Political correctness says that if you can’t or don’t want to go out and work for what you want that society owes you and society must make the path easier or provide your needs for you. I dare you to go into a business and ask the owner how its working out finding good employees? What I find is they are quick to tell you how hard it is to find an employee who is willing to show up on time, give 100% and do the job in a competent and expeditious way. There seems to be no shortage of employees who spend the day talking about the latest cell phone

October 2016

games, texting their friends and come to work presenting a counter culture image that runs off customers. If I want a sex change, to marry my dog, get free college and never have to respond to a policeman after I rob a store? Is it reasonable that everyone else in the world should roll over and accept that as normal behavior? Are there no limits on what is acceptable in society? Does everyone have a right to demand anything they want just because they want it or don’t have it? When I was a kid I wanted to drink Kool-Aid and eat candy all day. My parents didn’t let me!! They gave me healthy meals and only allowed candy as a reward for good behavior. Am I due reparations because I didn’t get what I wanted? What makes it okay to bring 10,000 people to this country from a place that has a high number of extremist terrorists committed to killing those of us who live here? Do we who live here have no right to be secure and protected and does that not trump their wish to come here and turn America into a place like where they left? It certainly feels to me like we have become a frivolous, self-centered, victim based society and that those who get on with their life, work hard and achieve great things are required to take care of the whiners. Remember when people used to say, “If it was easy everyone would do it?” What if our sports were run like we’re pushed to make society run? Wouldn’t the NFL have to do something to solve the inequity of a 5’2” tight end who had every ball batted down that was thrown to him by a 6’ 4” defensive end? Shouldn’t we demand that this all stop? A better answer is to make Simone Biles the poster child for America. She’s a small black girl who persevered, worked hard and achieved excellence and won several gold medals in this summer’s Olympics by a large margin. She is the example and the message I should find when I pick up my remote. We really need to make America great again!!!! Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. 35th Annual Leslie W. Watson Memorial Toy Run & Benefit Party Bikers Who Care (BWC) is a biker organization dedicated to funding the Clarksville Dream Factory and other organizations assisting children, with special needs. They fully fund Camp Rainbow, a weeklong camp, for children with medical needs, Buddy Ball, a baseball league for special needs kids, Montgomery County Child Advocacy Center, and other charities, for sick kids. Besides funding Camp Rainbow, the members show up, on bikes, for a carnival day. The members fund and coach Buddy Ball, for kids, with mental and medical needs. During the year, BWC holds several fundraisers, including Bikers Who Scare, a Halloween house, and pokers runs. However, the Toy Run and Benefit Party is the biggest event. It would be hard to find a more caring (and fun loving) bunch of really great guys anywhere! The Toy Run and Benefit Party, September 16-18, was a held at Clarksville Speedway. For a $35 advance ticket, attendees enjoyed 13 bands, headlined by JACKYL and Hillbilly Casino on Friday, and American Floyd, on Saturday. JACKYL enjoyed a record crowd, for the party. Other bands performing were: Chuck Emery & Friends, Myth, The HELL You Say!, Brother Ryan, Brusharbor, Ballistic Pintos, Nightmasters, Corey Farlow, Guitar Rock-Ambush, and Low Volts. You couldn’t attend a single concert for $35! But wait, there was much more. Free Beer, donated by Budweiser Clarksville, bike show, tattoo contest, drag races, Miss Toy Run Bikini Contest, Music City Burlesque Review, field events, camping, vendors, as well as the state’s largest toy run. Appleton’s H-D showcased the new Milwaukee Eight, in the toy run.

DANGERS OF DISTRACTION

Riding from Jasper, AB, Canada on my way to Christina Lake, BC, Canada in early August this year, I visited Summerland, a lovely town in British Columbia tucked in the middle of two large lakes. A flowing river connected one lake to another and on this particular summer day, the river was dotted for miles with vibrant colored rafts floating along carrying people of all ages. Every so often at the side of the river bank, there would be entry and exit points for the floaters and these areas would be highly congested with people and vehicles. It was easy to get pulled-in to the fun by watching all the rafts as we rode along side the river. When riding a motorcycle, anything that distracts your attention from the road can be dangerous. On this particular day, the traffic was heavy and slow, and most of the motorists appeared to be watching the floaters and probably daydreaming about how much fun that could be. I’ll admit I had those very thoughts. It was a hot, sunny day and the river was very enticing. Here are some things to remember when you find yourself becoming distracted. The MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) recommends “using time and distance to your advantage”. At a minimum, you should have a 2-second following distance from the vehicle in front of you. This 2-second minimum applies when conditions are ideal and you are paying attention to the road. If your attention is being pulled somewhere else, like colorful floats and people entering and exiting the river, that lead-time should increase. So, think about a 4-second lead-time instead of 2-seconds. This will help you avoid running into the vehicle in front you. With good braking skills, stopping in the distance you can travel in 4-seconds is something you can do. But, you may need all that space. In the Basic RiderCourse offered by the MSF, students learn about Total Stopping Distance. Since we’re at the beginning of football season, think of the length of a football field. If your speed is 60 MPH, you are moving about 90 feet per second. On average, a person will take about 135 feet (over

October 2016

one-third) of the football field just to see a hazard and begin to react to it. By the time you begin to brake, you have already traveled the entire length of a football field, into the end zone and beyond.

MSF BASIC RIDERCOURSE Rider Handbook, pg. 23 As you are riding this fall, remember the dangers of distraction and give yourself the time and space to stop smoothly. Riding safely starts with you! (Want to find a motorcycle safety course near you? Check the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s website at msf-usa.org or stop by your local motorcycle dealership.) Donna, along with being an avid riding enthusiast, is a MSF motorcycle safety coach for the state of TN and a HarleyDavidson Riding Academy coach.

PROSECUTOR DROPS EFFORT TO SEIZE DEVILS DICIPLES TRADEMARK ‘COLORS’ As Motorcycle Clubs continue to fight to save their patch, federal prosecutors have dropped a controversial bid to seize the trademark owned by the Devils Diciples MC, though the move does not end trademark challenges involving club colors. In filings made on August 29, 2016 in federal court in Detroit, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan filed a notice dismissing the DDMC Trademark forfeiture, which states; “The government hereby provides notice that it is not seeking to forfeit the DDMC Trademark in this criminal proceeding and hereby dismisses it from the First Forfeiture Bill of Particulars.” Most law enforcement asset-forfeiture efforts target conventional property, but prosecutors began trying to seize the Devils Diciples’ trademark as a byproduct of a criminal case in which prosecutors in October 2014 itemized property they wanted to seize, from guns to slot machines, and at the end of the 32-page property listing prosecutors included the club’s trademark. “These trademark cases are important to the clubs, whose free association has been threatened by the attempts by (prosecutors) to enjoin use of their membership (marks) by non-indicted persons,” Devils Diciples attorney Fritz Clapp told the McClatchyDC news site, adding that such cases have established important precedents regarding forfeiture of collective membership marks and the implications of free speech and association. The prosecutor’s decision now to leave the Devils Diciples’ trademark alone does not put the brakes on other attempts to seize clubs’ colors as, most notably, the government is still taking aim at the Mongol Nation, whose intellectual property has been sought by federal prosecutors since 2008. A federal appellate court is now considering the Mongol Nation case. OREGON BIKER SCORES A WIN IN DISCRIMINATION CASE After 14 years of spotless service, Ron Godwin was fired from his job as an Oregon youth corrections officer because of his club patch. A Grants Pass, Oregon police officer saw Godwin on his bike, wearing his club patch, called his boss and said Godwin was a member of a “criminal gang.” After a brief, so-called investigation, Godwin’s boss fired him. Oregon’s AIM (Aid to Injured Motorcyclists) and COC (Confederation of Clubs) Attorney Sam Hochberg took up the case and filed suit in Federal Court in Medford, with assistance from lawyer Chris Bottoms. Depositions were taken, and with the help of 42

ACLU volunteer lawyer Sara K. Staggs, the case was thoroughly briefed. The trial court ruled that, based on statements in depositions, Godwin had no case under the law. The case never got to the jury, but the ruling was appealed to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and argued by ACLU volunteer lawyer Cody Hoesly. On August 10, 2016, a three-judge panel from the Ninth Circuit issued a 17-page Memorandum opinion, including one dissent, and reversed that decision, sending it back to District Court for trial. The panel analyzed cases about government employees’ rights of free speech and association, and found the State showed no legitimate interest that outweighed Ron Godwin’s First Amendment rights. As a Memorandum decision, the “unpublished” ruling can be cited in any Federal Court, so it’s useful nationwide. “This is an important decision for the free speech and free association rights of all bikers, and club members in particular,” says Hochberg, now “Of Counsel” to Christopher Slater, the new Oregon and Washington AIM and Oregon COC Attorney. The case of Ronald Godwin v. Rogue Valley Youth Correctional Facility, et al, now goes back to the trial court, absent further appeal or settlement. TRAFFIC STATISTICS SHOW RISE IN FATALITIES, FEDS ISSUE CALL TO ACTION Statistics compiled by the U. S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that 35,092 people died in traffic crashes in 2015, ending a five-decade trend of declining fatalities with a 7.2% increase in deaths, reflecting 2,348 more fatalities from motor vehicle crashes than in 2014. Fatalities increased from 2014 to 2015 in almost all segments of the population—passenger vehicle occupants (+6.6%), passenger cars (+5.7%), large trucks (+11%), SUV occupants (+10.1%), van occupants (+9.3%), pickup truck occupants (+4.7%), pedestrians (+9.5%), bicyclists (+12.2%), motorcyclists (+8.3%), alcohol-impaired driving fatalities (+3.2%), male (+7.0%) / female (+7.4%), daytime (+7.2%) / nighttime (+7.1%). The estimated number of police-reported crashes increased by 3.8%, from 6.0 to 6.3 million, and there were 105,000 more people injured in motor vehicle crashes. According to NHTSA, job growth and low fuel prices were two factors that led to increased driving, including increased leisure driving and driving by young people. More driving can contribute to higher fatality rates. In 2015, vehicle miles traveled (VMT) increased 3.5 percent over 2014, the largest increase since 1992, nearly 25 years ago, though the fatality rate per 100 million VMT increased to 1.12 from 1.08 in 2014 which was the lowest since NHTSA began collecting fatality data through the Fatality Analysis Reporting System in 1975. Upon releasing this new data, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) issued a Call to Action: “We are calling on data scientists, public health experts, students and researchers -- even if you have never thought about road safety before -- to dive in to these data and help answer these important questions, es-

GEORGIA EXTENDS HANDLEBAR HEIGHT Affective July 1, 2016 legislation in Georgia has modified the state’s handlebar height law to allow for taller bars. Signed into law by Governor Nathan Deal, House Bill 166, the “Motorcycle Mobility Safety Act” increased the maximum measured height of a motorcycle’s handlebars from 15 inches above the seat to 25 inches. Georgia is among 30 states that limit the height of handlebars. Without a federal standard, the regulation of handlebars on motorcycles rests with the states. Currently, 11 states limit the height of handlebars to 15 inches above the saddle. Five others require the handlebars to be below the height of the shoulder. Last summer, South Dakota, which hosts the annual Sturgis Rally became the most recent state to repeal its shoulder level statute, legalizing so-called “ape hangers” just in time for the 75th annual rally. Discriminatory in nature, handlebar height laws have no impact on rider safety, and most were adopted by states decades ago to provide police with an excuse to pull over bikers on choppers. VULNERABLE ROAD USERS COMPONENT ADDED TO ACT DRIVER’S LICENSE TESTS Young drivers in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) around Canberra, Australia’s capital city, will have to be able to prove they can share the road safely with cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians before they’ll be granted a license, the ACT government has announced. People applying for learner permits or provisional licenses must demonstrate they can drive around vulnerable road users or risk failing their test, the ACT’s Road safety Minister Shane Rattenbury told The Sydney Morning Herald. October 2016

“It’s really exciting that more and more Canberrans are choosing to walk and cycle around Canberra,” he said. “However, it’s important that we ensure that our road rules can accommodate all road users safely, and that all road users are aware of these rules.” Twenty extra questions will be added to the road rules knowledge test. Applicants must score 100% on this section to gain their learner’s license. During their practical driving test, learners going for their “Ps” (Provisional P1 license) must demonstrate they can navigate roads with bicycle lanes and move through areas of slow traffic where motorcyclists may be lane-filtering. Applicants will be tested in areas frequented by cyclists and pedestrians, including shared zones, town centers, group centers, aged-care facilities and school zones. DO YOU TRUST YOUR NEWS SOURCE? When Gallup pollsters recently asked the question: “How much trust and confidence do you have in the media?” respondents cited “Great Deal / Fair Amount” by only 32%, the lowest number on the subject in Gallup’s 34 year history. In contrast, the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) has been disseminating timely and accurate motorcycle news and information for over three decades, and the AIM/NCOM Motorcycle ENews Service now reaches over a million motorcyclists across the country and around the globe with each monthly edition of NCOM Biker Newsbytes, Calls-To-Action, and important news releases of interest to ALL motorcyclists in the riding community. Concerned clubs, organizations and riders’ rights activists are encouraged to subscribe to this free biker news service at www.ON-ABIKE.com or by calling AIM/NCOM at 1-(800) ON-A-BIKE.
