How HOT is it? It’s so hot that the catfish are already fried when you catch them! We have had a pretty mild Summer up until this week, but now it’s so hot and humid, that as much as I love riding, it’s just too dang hot for me! Welcome to Tennessee where the forecast is ALWAYS subject to change! And speaking of change… Can I just say that this last month, as the new Owners/ Publishers of THUNDER ROADS TENNESSEE magazine, has been so stressful and crazy, but also fun and rewarding. There has been a lot of tears, but also a lot of laughs! We have attended some great events and bike nights where we met some awesome people, people that really love THUNDER ROADS TENNESSEE. We have also met a lot of our faithful ADVERTISERS and some of our new ADVERTISERS and we are still making the rounds to meet ALL of them. We would like to thank each and every one of you, whether you are a fan, supporter, or ADVERTISER, we sincerely appreciate ALL of you! We hope that everyone likes our first issue of THUNDER ROADS TENNESSEE, and all we can say is, a lot of work, time, lost sleep, and effort went in to this issue. We have learned a lot, but still have so much more to learn, and we PROMISE that it will only get better from here, just be a little patient, as this is all new to us! We want EVERY issue to be full of good articles, so if you have an article or a good idea, let us hear it! We need and are open to all suggestions that you may have. We want this to be a GOOD read, not just OK, but are striving for GREAT! Also, if you have an event that you would like for us to attend, please let us know and we will try and make it work with our schedules and be there, but PLEASE remember that support is a two-way street. Just a little info about us… Scott is a Career Firefighter/Engineer and he works really hard at his job and has for the last 26 years. I have had several jobs over the years, but what I enjoyed the most was bookkeeping, now I get to do that again with THUNDER ROADS TN, as office/bookkeeping skills are a part of owning the magazine. We have 2 grown children that we couldn’t be more proud of. Our daughter, Amber is married and lives in Canada with her husband, they are newlyweds and met in Scotland while attending the University of Edinburgh. Our son, Chad lives in Murfreesboro and is attending MTSU, finishing his degree in Computer Science. Our baby is our Yorkie, Taz aka “Thunder Dawg”! He is very excited about his new role as “Thunder Dawg” and all the other dogs on the block are now envious of him and he is getting a big head, LOL! More to come about us in October, as it will be our 28th Anniversary!! few Saturdays ago we rode up to Clarksville to see our friends at Appleton Harley-Davidson®, for their Hot Rods and Harleys event. As always, the staff at Appleton HD did a great job. There was a good turnout for the car and bike show on a warm afternoon with everything from rat rods, to resto rods, and restored muscle cars, to modern customs. The bikes and all classes of cars were judged, then the crowd voted on people’s choice and overall. They also had a drawing for a $5000 gift card for 75 people that had bought new motorcycles that month, it was won by Lt. Jacob Thomson. They had live music and good food, and they even played some games in the parking lot. Denise won a t-shirt, I don’t think they knew what they were getting into when they asked her to play, she’s a little competitive. Speaking of the Appleton gang, they entered a photo contest for the show Biker Battleground and won. Now that’s a cool picture.

9th Annual Confederate Flag Benefit By: Rebel Ron On August 9 the tiny village of Peytonsville, just outside of Historic Franklin, Tenn. welcomed history buffs & party animals from all over Middle Tenn. & several other states for a benefit for the Tennessee State Museum. The event was hosted by the Roderick, Forrest War Horse camp 2072 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans from Springhill & was held at the Mangrum Family’s antebellum home that was built in 1832. This event is planned to be a little bit different than most outdoor events. We have live music from bluegrass to Southern rock with special guests along with stunt ladies.

The VooDoo Vixens wowed the crowd with their beauty & various performances with fire, hoola hoops, & more. The MC this year, Big Daddy Cool, also added to the show with colorful announcements, a tattoo competition, & very cool magic tricks. There was a silent auction with signed items from Big Smo of Unionville, Tenn. & the great Johnny Winters of Texas and so much more. There were various vendors such as Bettie’s Parkway Grill of Columbia, Mule Threaders Embroidery of Franklin, & more. The free caricature artist was a big hit as always. And if all that was not enough you could go shoot an authentic Confederate cannon too! It is literally a blast!

Despite the threat of rain the show went on, it never rained, & the crowd was down a bit but that did not stop us from having a great time. Don’t know why so many grown ups are afraid of a little afternoon rain anyway. It is not going to hurt you & cools off the hot summer days. Besides there is a reason why we print the event shirts on white tees. :) The show was fantastic, the people enjoyed themselves, & we raised almost $10,000 to conserve the 18th Tenn. Infantry›s huge silk battle flag. (This is the 5th flag we have saved in the Museum›s huge collection. There are dozen more that need help.) Let us know if you›d like to help & be sure to attend the 10th Annual event in August of 2015. Gonna be a good one! To help raise funds or to learn more about what we do look for “Confederate Flag Benefit/Ronnaroo” on FaceBook. This fun unique event would not be possible without the help of many friends such as Donna Smithson, Melissa Savage, Dawn Perry, Jenny Jewell, Ronnie Anderson, Chappy Burdick, Roger Leonard, John Minter, my favorite sister Doris Bruce, Baxter’s Tenn. Light Artillery, & many others. We’d like to thank our sponsors for their support of this worthy cause as well. Grumpy Bail Bonds, Handy Hardware, Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, S & G Custom Cycles, & the original Pucketts Grocery in Leipers Fork. September 2014

“The D.N.A. TEST” We have all seen the reality shows that feature a D.N.A. test to prove “Who’s the daddy” or the crime shows on TV that determines guilt or innocence. But did you know that all Christians take a D.N.A. Test every day and sometimes they can get intense. So my question to all Christians is simply this; “Who’s your Daddy?” In John 13:34-35 “A New Commandment I give unto you, that you LOVE one another…by this shall all men know that you are my disciples.” This is “The D.N.A. Test” for all Christians; the problem is that the modern day Christian does not understand the difference between “Love and Lust.” Lust & Love are all most twins except for the fruit, we associate lust with sex but lust is really all about selfishness, having it your way, your personal feelings, what can you do for me, it’s all about self. Lust takes, love gives. Too many people wear the Christian Patch but in truth it’s all about themselves, what can God do for me, heal me, prosper me, deliver me, joy, peace, and save my soul from hell, yes it is true that God can do all these things but with most Christians it’s all about lust and not love, what can you do for God? If you take off that Christian Patch, will anyone know that you a Christian? Will you pass “The D.N.A. Test?” Eph. 3: 16-17 “…to be strengthen with might by His Spirit in the Inner man… to be rooted and grounded in LOVE.” We spend to much time & money on the “Outer man,” just think of all the money spent on making ourselves look good on the outside: makeup, designer clothes, plastic surgery, diets, and don’t forget all that exercise equipment stuffed in the closet, while we invest nothing on the “Inner man.” If you September 2014

start out “rooted & grounded in love” it will end up in love. Whatever your root starts out with “love or lust” is how the Fruit will end up. Even Jesus had to pass “The D.N.A. Test.” Right after He was baptized, the Heavens opened up, God spoke audibly, and the Holy Spirit descended on Him like a dove. Most ministers today would immediately go on a world tour, but in Mat. 4:1-11 “The Holy Spirit immediately led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.” The D.N.A. Test included The Provision Test, The Protection Test, and The Power Test. Would He “turn the stone into bread, would He cast Himself off the Temple to see if the Angels would catch him, would He fall down and worship the devil for all the kingdoms of the earth?” Jesus would not Provide for Himself, would not Protect Himself, and would not compromise His Power. He did it all for us, because He had real love for all mankind, “For God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son.” Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

K.I.S.S. page composed & edited by: Toni McCoy Shearon aka “MaMa Thunder” of Thunder Roads National Founders’ Office.

This Month’s K.I.S.S. is dedicated to the: BIKES, BLUES, & BBQ RALLY IN FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS - SEPT. 24th - 27th Owner/Promoter: Joe Giles & Phenomenal Staff Since there IS a rally that’s all about the “Q”, these are just a few fave recipes of side-dishes you must have to accompany a great ‘Q”. Eat Up! CRISPY, CRUNCHY, CREAMY BACON COLESLAW * Prepare in a chilled ceramic or glass bowl. 1 Large Bag of Pre-Shredded Coleslaw 3/4 Jar of Cubed Dill Pickle (I use Dill for tartness, if you prefer Sweet Dill, then have at it) 1 Lb. of Hickory-Smoked Bacon; fried crisp, drained and rough chopped 1 Medium Purple Onion; small, precise chop In a Large Mason Jar, fill it with: 1 tsp. of Apple Cider Vinegar (more for more twang) 1 Cup of Real Mayo 1 Cup of Miracle Whip 1 Cup of Half & Half 1 Tbls. of Lime Juice 1 Tbls. of Lemon Pepper dry spice 1 Heaping Tbls. of Sugar 1 tsp. of Smoked Paprika Put top on Mason jar and shake it up baby! Shake until all mayo is fully incorporated and no lumps. Kinda’ frothy. Throw your Dill picles on top of shredded coleslaw, toss your hard chop bacon in, salt & pepper to taste, now pour your creamy mixture all over and around and with super clean hands; just get on in there and toss it around gently until everything is well mixed and well coated. Take a forkful and taste-test. Decide for yourself what else is needed. Maybe a little more sugar, maybe more cider vinegar. You’re your best critic, your call. Cover immediately and very tightly with Press N’ Seal. Note* I prepare this 1/2 hour prior to serving as your coleslaw mix is already cold, along with your chilled bowl and mayo. You want the mix to be fresh & crunchy, including the bacon to still have freshness and nothing to be mushy. I have made this the same way since I was 15 y.o. and always get raves on. It’s a guaranteed winner! Next month I’ll give you my Award Winning Tuna Salad recipe. I have literally perfected it since age 13 and baby, MaMa Thunder got that chit down. Next month.....Promise. K.I.S.S. Tip: Unless you’re a cook who prepares fresh dishes almost every day, it’s o.k. to use bottled juices or dry spices. No shame. When you use dry spices though, be sure and dump them in your palm and rub your palms together over the bowl or skillet. Kinda’ perks them up and brings back the original flayva. 14

BAKED BEANS & SPICY ITALIAN SAUSAGE

2 Large Cans of your favorite BUSH’s Baked Beans (I’ve lived all over this great U.S.A. and have never found a major grocery store without the Bush’s brand) (I like the Country-Style, but to each their own) 1 Pack of Spicy Italian Sausage (usually 6 to a pkg) 2 Small Cans of Green Chilies Pour your favorite brand of 2 cans of Bush’s Beans into a glass or ceramic baking dish. Add your 2 cans of Green Chilies and stir up good. Fry up your Italian Sausage links until they’re really golden brown and caramelized on all sides around. Move to a plate so that all the juices aren’t absorbed up in a paper towel. Let cool to the touch and then slice up in 1/4 inch pieces. Sprinkle all over your beans, add salt & pepper, garlic, smoked paprika and stir until completely incorporated. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Serve hot! Super Taste!

MACCARONI & CHEESE & CHORIZO

(Spicy Hot Mexican Sausage) Get the Family Size box of Kraft Maccaroni & Cheese and follow the same recipe above as far as prep and baking goes.Delete chilies if want as Chorizo itself is hot & spicy. Make up your Mac n’ Cheese; be sure and add 2 heaping Tbls. of quality margarine in a big bowl & a dash of milk. Pour into glass baking dish with sliced Chorizo. Sprinkle Panko bread crumbs all over the top, press down, then spray w/ a canned butter spray all over. Bake as above until golden.

CINNAMON COUNTRY FRIED APPLES

2 Cans of Apple Pie Filling - Do Not Buy cans of sliced apples in canned fruit aisle. Get Pie Filling from Baking aisle. If you’re not a big apples fan, then get Peach Pie Filling. Fried Peaches and “Q” are good together also. Take a large, non-stick, quality skillet and add 2 big dollops of real butter to the skillet, on medium heat and let it melt down and get what’s called “brown butter”. Add your 2 cans of pie filling and sprinkle your cinnamon all over generously. Let them just sit for a bit and get a good caramelization on them. Then, take a fork and flip individually and stir around gently, sprinkle with cinnamon again, stir around gently as you don’t want the thick filling to get gummy or too sticky. Once they’re carmelized on the other side then just remove to a warmed platter from the oven if not going to serve them right away then keep platter in the oven, set on 250 degrees. These are so easy to make and taste like you took all day peeling and coring apples. Hey, it’s called K.I.S.S. for a reason. Why do all that fuss and muss when there’s plenty of ways to keep it simple but still come out with that fantastic taste of down home cooking. BIKERS, ENJOY BIKES, BLUES & BBQ RALLY! If camping out, whip up some sides. Blessings.

THUNDER ROADS® AMA PRO HARLEY-DAVIDSON® RIDER RYAN KERR FACES A SETBACK AS HE CONTINUES TO FOCUS ON HIS UPCOMING RACE With only three weeks until the AMA Pro Road Racing Event at New Jersey Motorsports Park, in Millville, New Jersey, on September 13 – 14, #28 Ryan Kerr continues to remain positive. Kerr was involved in an incident while bike testing on July 18th which resulted in the young rider breaking his foot. Two days following the incident, the Thunder Roads sponsored rider pushed through the pain and raced at the AMA Pro Road Racing event at Mid Ohio Sports Car course and accomplished a strong 6th place finish. Kerr explains, “I was not going to allow this setback to keep me off of the track but I must admit, the pain took over on lap 4 and I barely had the strength to continue to shift my Thunder Roads XR 1200 HarleyDavidson machine. I remained focused throughout the race and my never give up attitude allowed me to take the checkered flag in 6th place. I am taking the time that I need to recover and I am hopeful that I will be back on the track in New Jersey for the last racing event of the season.” Become a member of the Ryan Kerr Fan Club by checking out his website at www.Flyinryankerr.com. COLBOCH HARLEY-DAVIDSON®

50TH / 55TH ANNIVERSARY

written by: Sandy Giddis as told by Smokey Colboch Kenneth “Smokey” Colboch has had a passion for motorcycles and the proud owner of three Whizzer motorbikes, Dyna Cycle, Indian Chief and three Harley- Davidson’s by the time he was 16 years old. In 1955, Smokey and two friends, Jimmy Rines and Jimmy’s cousin; Ernest Rines decided to ride down to Daytona Bike Week. Smokey, at the age of 16, rode his 1950 HarleyDavidson FL74. Being a part of Daytona Bike Week and all of the excitement, Jimmy and Ernest decided to open up their own Harley-Davidson dealership. Rines Harley-Davidson was established in 1955. Although in a small building on Buffalo Trail, it consisted of only of Jimmy, Ernest and a mechanic they hired. Smokey was not an employee of Rines Harley-

Davidson, he would stop in for a chat now and then with his friends and helped out here and there. Later Jimmy decided to sell his half of the business to his cousin Ernest, making him full owner of the dealership in which he then relocated the dealership to East Main Street. The year now 1959, and Smokey and Ernest were once again on their way to Daytona Bike Week. Even though Daytona streets were covered with bikes, the economy was slow and times were hard in Morristown, Ernest told Smokey he would be giving up the dealership. Smokey asked Ernest if he would accept an offer for him to get the chance to turn the business around and make money. Smokey would first incur all debts to creditors and Harley-Davidson Motor Company. Once the debts were paid, Smokey would pay Ernest the amount

which he had invested into the dealership with interest. Smokey agreed he would pay himself $40.00 per week while operating the dealership. If Smokey wasn’t able to live up to his part of the deal, which was getting the dealership to make a profit, he would turn everything back over to Ernest. They made their VERBAL agreement and the deal was final. Smokey and Ernest informed Harley-Davidson Motor Company of their plans, but never made the deal formal with all of the paperwork. From then on, Rines Harley-Davidson became a one man operation with Smokey Colboch at the helm. Smokey did it all from selling bikes, servicing bikes, selling parts and cleaning up the shop located on East Main. After settling debts, Smokey began making payments to Ernest. There was not a specific amount due and when he made a payment, he would grab an old sales receipt and write amount paid on the back, and then he would toss it up on a shelf where the pile of papers would lay for the next 5 years. The business was finally running and Smokey was able to hire part time help during riding season. Smokey kept the business at the East Main Street location for the next 3 years, and then moved a little further up the road on East Main Street to a building that was four times bigger than the previous shop. He then spent three more years at this location; the year being 1964 Harley-Davidson District Manager came to town and told Smokey it was time to make the ownership official and legal. Rines Harley-Davidson then became Colboch Harley-Davidson. Smokey made his last payment in 1966 to Ernest and then moved the business to a building twice the size of the current building where he stayed for 25 years and continued to grow. Smokey decided to meet the demand of his business he would build a building twice the size of the building he was currently in and moved to the property on North Davy Crockett Parkway, and opened January 2, 1991. This is the location Colboch Harley-Davidson still remains today. Smokey has since remodeled and made the building larger to meet the increasing demand of his ever growing motorcycle business. Smokey remains the same with his passion and love of motorcycles that will never change. This story was told by Smokey Colboch himself and his new chapter continues on. September 2014

Judy and I joined the Hot Rod Conspiracy/Carpenter Racing Castrol Rocket Team for testing at the Bonneville Salt Flats on July 23th and 24th. This team will attempt to break the current AMA and FIM motorcycle land speed record of 376.156 mph, set in 2010 by Rocky Robinson and the Ack Attack. After bad weather and a small fire thwarted their efforts, in August 2013, the team is back to try again. Winds of over 3 mph prove dangerous to the runs and hampered testing. The second test run, without side (training) wheels, of 140 mph, was followed, the next day, by a run of 214 mph, utilizing only 30% of the twin turbo Rocket III engines’ power. The Rocket is expected to exceed 400 mph when dialed up, raising the bar for future attempts. The current Bonneville track is approximately 13 miles long and 80 feet wide. The Salt surface is extremely slick and is treacherously thin outside of the track. I can attest to the slippery surface by experience. On the track, we planned to reach 150-160mph in my car, but besides breaking loose both rear tires, with any strong acceleration, the 5 mph winds, combined with the surface, caused the car to skate at 110 and

18

I prudently backed off. The night before, an unwary family, in an SUV, traveled off the track, broke through the salt surface, and was helplessly stuck up to the frame. I don’t know the total removal cost, but was told that the phone call to the wrecker started the clock at $400! The salt is also sticky and cakes on everything. This is the surface on which Jason DiSalvo will attempt a 400mph run. This attempt will follow Triumph’s previous world record bikes: Devil’s Arrow, Texas Cee-gar, Dudek/Johnson, and Gyronaut X1, which, except for a 33 day period, held the World’s Speed Record, from 1955 to 1970. The 25’l X 2’w X 3’h Carbon Kevlar monocoque Rocket is powered by twin, methanol fueled, 1,485 cc Turbo Rocket III engines, built by Bob Carpenter, of Carpenter Racing, expected to produce a combined 1,200hp, at 9,000 rpm, and in excess of 500lb torque. Matt Markstaller, aerodynamic engineer, with Daimier Trucks, joined Dave Jeffers, of Hot Rod Conspiracy, in the design of the carbon fiber vehicle. Triumph is represented by Maurice Turgaeu (Triumph) and Paul Runion (Triumph/Latus Motor Racing). James

Whisler (MoTeC), Eddie Wallinski (Carpenter Racing), Ian and Greg Markstaller (Hot Rod Conspiracy), and Stacey Becker (BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials), round out the team. Talking with Jason DiSalvo, you could see the pure joy of being the pilot of the Rocket. When Judy asked if it wasn’t dangerous, DiSalvo replied “Yes” with a broad smile and a twinkle in his eyes. DiSalvo is no stranger to speed and danger. He is a Daytona 200 winner and international champion rider. Beginning his racing career at 4, he was National 125cc Dirt Track Champion at 13. Currently racing with Latus Motor Racing Triumph, he consistently exceeds 200mph. To him, 200mph seems fast on his race bike, but slow in the Rocket. He also operates the DiSalvo Speed Academy, which teaches safe, fast motorcycling at various venues, in the US. He is already an AMA and FIM class speed record holder on a Triumph Rocket III motorcycle. The Rocket was designed as a tight fit for the 5’3”, 137 pounder. Installing him in the Rocket is a lengthy process, requiring a leaf blower to keep him

September 2014

cool. DiSalvo has the ability to discuss each run, second by second, assisting the team in tweaking the machine. At the end of the run, DiSalvo deploys a high speed chute, then a low speed speed chute, to bring the beast to rest on two tiny side wheels, which look like pizza cutters on steroids. At speeds below 30mph, the centrifugal force of the massive wheels and tires isn’t strong enough to keep the Rocket upright, without the side wheels. The chutes must apply less than .36 g’s on the Rocket or it will break loose on the salt. For the same reason, the speed is eased up with 7 gears to keep traction. He noted that at lower speeds, wind makes the Rocket wobble, above 200mph, the bike turns. This team is open and welcoming to all. Tourists were invited to look over the machine and talk to the team members. Not like an unnamed auto team that had guards, with dogs, patrolling their area of the Flats to keep people, including the Rocket team, far away. Good Luck to the Rocket! Ride Safe and Have Fun!! 3-D HEAD CUSTOM PAINT® KNOXVILLE, TN 865-621-9836 Ask for KENNY or TONY

BIG BEAR JOHNSON is on his deathbed and knows the end is near. His nurse, his wife, his daughter and 2 sons, are with him in the hospital room. He asks for 2 witnesses to be present and a camcorder be in place to record his last wishes, and when all is ready he begins to speak: My son, “Bernie, I want you to take the Mayfair houses.”” My daughter “Sybil, you take the apartments over in the east end.”” My son, “Jamie, I want you to take the offices over in the City Centre.”... “Sarah, my beloved wife, please take all the residential buildings on the banks of the river.” The nurse and witnesses are blown away as they did not realize his extensive holdings, and as Big Bear slips away, the nurse says, “Mrs. Smith, your husband must have been such a hard-working man to have accumulated all this property”. Sarah replies, “Property ? .....the A-hole had a paper route!” A man said to his wife one day, ‘I don’t know how you can be so stupid and beautiful all at the same time. ‘The wife responded, ‘Allow me to explain. God made me (beautiful) so you would be attracted to me; ( and then ) God in his infinite wisdom, made me (stupid as you put it) so I would be attracted to the likes of you! A couple rode their bike down a country road for several miles, not saying a word. An earlier discussion had led to an argument and neither of them wanted to concede their position. As they passed a barnyard of jackasses, goats, and pigs, the husband asked in a blatantly dry sarcastic manner, ‘Relatives of yours?” ‘Yep,’ the wife replied, without skipping a beat, ‘That would be my In-Laws”. I went fishing this morning, but after a short time I ran out of worms. Then I saw a Cottonmouth with a frog in his mouth. Frogs are good bass bait. Knowing the snake couldn’t bite me with the frog in his mouth, I grabbed him right behind the head, took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket. Now the dilemma was how to release the snake without getting bit. So, I grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniels and poured a little whiskey in its mouth. His eyes rolled back, and he went totally limp. I released him back into the lake, safe and sound and carried on with my fishing. A little later, I felt a thump on the side of the boat. There was that same damn snake with two frogs in his big mouth! 22

Things That Make You Go WTF? WHY? do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front? WHY do people order double, bacon cheeseburgers, large fries, and a Diet Coke? WHY do banks leave mammoth vault doors wide open and then chain the pens to the counters? WHY do we always take a dump, then stand up and turn around and scope it out? WHY do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and put our useless junk in the garage? WHY do we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight? WHY do they have drive-up ATM machines with Braille lettering for the driver? WHY the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin? WHY can’t most women put on mascara with their mouth closed? WHY don’t you ever see the headline; ‘Psychic Wins Lottery’? WHY is ‘abbreviated’ such a long word? WHY is it that doctors call what they do ‘practice’? WHY is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dishwashing liquid made with real lemons? WHY is the man who invests all your money called a broker? WHY is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour? WHY isn’t there mouse-flavored cat food? WHY didn’t Noah swat those damn, last two mosquitoes? WHY do they sterilize the needle and the arm for lethal injections? You know that indestructible black box that is used on airpla nes? WHY don’t they make the whole plane out of that stuff? WHY don’t sheep shrink when it rains? WHY are they called apartments when they are all stuck together? WHY if con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress? WHY if flying is supposedly so safe, do they call the airport “the Terminal”? WHY in a 3,000 sq. ft. home, if there’s one fly in the entire house, it’s buzzing around you throughout the entire day? WHY don’t men just comprehend if they simply say, “you’re right babe, no problem”....the quality of their life would literally improve by 99.9%? And the world would be a more tranquil place for us all.

KENTUCKY BIKE RALLY 2014

This year’s Rally was different than any year we’ve been in the past (15) years’, as the Rally fell on the 3rd weekend of July instead of the 2nd weekend, that it has in past years. That meant that I had to stay home, as it fell smack-dab in the middle of “crunch week” for laying out the August issue. And, our one son, Joey, who standardly covers “The Jungle” in the back for us, was finishing a construction project in Brentwood and was under a strict timeline. So, Brian covered it all by his lonesome, but still managed with HUGE assistance from Ed Spicuzza, who was our National Videographer, and is now the Official Rally Photographer/Videographer for Carlene & Bill Thomas, Owners/Promoters for Kentucky Bike Rally. Thank You, Ed, for pitching in and lending a hand and getting some great shots. Ed is going to be posting a phenomenal, full-length video of the entire Rally on You Tube, Kentucky Bike Rally’s website and many other biker related sites, including Thunder Roads T.V.’s website. Be sure and check it out wherever you choose to view it. Brian said this year’s Rally was actually one of the highest attendance, but also one of the best weather years’ due to really low humidity, so they ended up with perfect weather. The Rally Gods smiled down. All the bands were spot on but we’re partial to GENEVA, so, they

26

totally rocked the Rally! Go G.!!!

The Field Events in the Arena were tons of fun, as always and everybody laughed their asses off as they always do as there’s so many antics and just good ole’ fun. Plus the Arena is as cold as a meat locker so it’s a great place to hang out. The Bike Show was held in the Arena this year so there again, way better than when the other Owners had it and held it out on the hot-ass pavement for hours and everyone had to stand around and form their own puddle of sweat. Yay! Carlene, Bill & Jessica for getting it totally right! If you’ve never been to this HUGE attendance Rally in this little, clean as a whistle, sleepy hollows town, you just can’t call yourself a bonafide Biker until you dare to attend and enter………”The Jungle”. We’ll see you there with “Thunder Pete” Promo Rig as even though we won’t be doing the TN edition any longer, this is one Rally we will continue to attend, just for FUN, till we’re too old to climb out of the Rig. Be sure and check out the video footage that Ed Spicuzza from E.L.M.S. PRODUCTIONS shot. It’s a total hoot! and y’all will be busting a gut laughing and that’s one of our favorite things to do. We love ya’ bikers. Ride safe out there!

by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley Over the past ten months I’ve mentioned my bike build in a couple of articles. My ’03 Heritage Classic had 121,000 miles on it, no trade-in value and needed work so I decided to keep it, rebuild it and make it mine for the long haul. I started my research into what I wanted to do with it in early 2013. I can’t count the hours I spent on the internet, talking to mechanics, machine shops and researching parts. I am a Vietnam Veteran and very involved in work to find and identify America’s Prisoners of War and those still missing in Action. My bike needed to send the appropriate veteran message. To me, nothing sends that message like Asian Tiger Stripe camouflage. It was the pattern worn by Green Berets and many South Vietnamese units during the Vietnam War. I started the tear down in October of 2013. My goal was 100 horse power and 105 foot pounds of torque. I sent the lower case to Wisconsin for crank truing, Timken bearing, improved rods, removal of the Harley internal balancers and actual balancing of the flywheels. The heads went to California to be ported, polished and flowed with bigger valves and new springs. I went with an S&S 97 cubic inch kit, Andrews 37 gear drive cam, Fueling cam plate, lifters and oil pump. I put everything new in the primary and rebuilt the transmission. It got new EFI sensors but I retained the stock throttle body and added a bigger air cleaner. I replaced the shocks and struts with gas charged units. For the camouflage body parts I started looking at doing a wrap. Don’t go there! Harley’s scare the crap out of wrap installers. I ended up doing a hydro dip. The parts were sand blasted, primed and dunked through camouflage film floating on water. After they dried a thick coat of high quality clear was sprayed. When the parts dried I sanded and polished them to a high luster. Thanks to Dave at BAM Customs in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, for the fantastic camo job. I got the bike put back together around the first of May, 2014. This was my first rebuild and naturally I had my share of

September 2014

issues to learn about and overcome. I got a lot of advice from tech reps, Harley mechanics, machinists, U-Tube videos, DVDs and folks who have built bikes before. My thanks to one and all! I couldn’t have done it without you. My bike dyno’d at 98 HP and 104 foot pounds of torque at 1,500 miles. It’s stronger now that it is fully broken in. I’m approaching 7,000 miles on the rebuild and just got back from Sturgis. It ran like a scalded dog all the way there and back without a hitch. I want to thank the new team of Scott and Denise High who are the new Owner/Publishers of the Tennessee edition of Thunder Roads magazine for putting my veteran tribute on the September cover. This month I’ll be riding to Americus and Andersonville, Georgia, for “The Ride Home 2014.” This is America’s premier event to honor America’s former prisoners of war and the families of those still missing in action. I know the bike will be a hit. You can learn more about the event at www.theridehome.com . It is absolutely the best thing I do every year. It takes place over the weekend of POW/MIA Recognition Day from September 18 to the 20th. We’ll break bread and remember with prisoners of war from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, The Cold War, Desert Storm and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. These very special people endured unbelievable hardship, torture and starvation and came home silently to resume their life. They are all scarred by their ordeal but have learned how to live in spite of their trials. We can all learn much from them. They have turned pain into triumph and chosen to live when death would have been an easy choice. If you are thinking about rebuilding your bike and know something about tools – why not give it a try. Maybe you’ll end up learning as much as I did and have a bullet proof bike to ride in honor of America’s heroes. Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those can’t. Bulldog * My monthly column reflects my personal point of view and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Publishers of this magazine, but they, like me, acknowledge the sacrifices made for the privilege of Freedom of Speech, therefore, they gratefully let me rant. Thank you for reading my rants. Hope my opinions don’t offend anyone, but, we all should be grateful for the right to have free opinions.

STURGIS:

Rides, Friends, Music and Memories By: Your Riding Writer, “T” Collier Thunder Roads Magazine® Oklahoma As the sun sank behind the Spearfish Canyon wall, so did my heart knowing this was my last beautiful, scenic run of Sturgis 2014. I’ll never quite be able to describe the magic of Sturgis to anyone that hasn’t been there during the rally. The many facets that make it difficult to describe range from the gorgeous rides that twist and weave through the mountains and National monuments; to the music at the various camps, amphitheaters, bars and roadside stops; to the smiles on the faces of the riders; to the people watching; to the variations of quality motorcycles from unknown builders competing alongside world famous builders; to the people I meet from all over the world; to developing friendships that last a lifetime even though I only see them in August of every year; to the crisp clean air and ridiculous rain storms. And the list goes on and on. Sturgis 2014 was filled with everything it’s been in the past and more. It seemed that every venue and camp had new events and entertainment added. Many vendors commented that the crowd was a bit lighter than normal, contributing it to the fact that many people are waiting to go to the 75th Annual Rally in 2015. However, those of us in attendance, enjoyed everything that keeps bringing us back. My journey began Saturday morning as I met up in Oklahoma with a group of nine women riders from Women in the Wind MC, Twisted Sisters Chapter. To ride with this group of respected lady riders was a real honor. We broke the trip up into two days, but made our first Sturgis stop at Crazy Horse as we entered from the South. Our timing was spectacular as we got to see Lakota Indian dancers perform in the foreground of the Crazy Horse monument. The crowd was wide eyed as the narrator told us they were 5th and 6th generation grandsons to Sitting Bull. What a treat to see them perform. A lot of my time was spent at the Buffalo Chip this year where I enjoyed the Legends Ride, a fundraiser for Black Hills Special Olympics and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame. Funds are raised through the rider’s entries and auction items which included an autographed guitar, a painting by David Uhl and a custom bike built by the students of Sturgis High School. This year, a total of $54,800 was raised. Riders included Bean’re, the Chip’s mayor of fun; The Ness Family including Cory, Zach and Max; The American Pickers; Gunne; Builder John Shope of Dirty Bird Customs; 32

Kristy Swanson; David Uhl; Jessi Combs and many more. The Biker Belles Ride, hosted by the Chip, was Tuesday in Deadwood with a host of wonderful women riders who, again, contributed to two charities, Helping with Horsepower and Sturgis Motorcycle Museum. A symposium featured six women riders who covered topics relating from seasoned riders to new riders and their experiences. Unfortunately, the pouring rain refused to stop and the group ride was cancelled for safety reasons. I helped a fellow lady rider, the talented Jessi Combs, famed fabricator and tv personality, by lending her my chaps to ride back from Deadwood to Sturgis in the pouring rain as she’d ridden in without saddlebags nor rain gear. Despite the rain, many of the ladies proceeded on to the auction and reception at the Buffalo Chip followed by a rocking concert by Alice Cooper and Motley Crue. Wednesday, I took advantage of the tremendous racing at the Sturgis Dragway. It’s hard to beat a good day at the track. This year, WMDRA filled the race schedule with numerous drivers from all over the United States. While the races at the Dragstrip lasted all day, there was more racing around town including a flat track AMA race and a TORC (The Off Road Championship) Race at the Buffalo Chip. I was fortunate to catch the ribbon cutting of the new TORC track at Buffalo Chip on Monday morning. These cars/trucks, sporting 500 to 800 hp, ran on a hillside track causing tight turns and high flying jumps for the racers. Owner, Rod Woodruff, stated that he was anxiously awaiting how the races would be accepted by their guests. He said that he’s not a racer so this track was a new experience for him. Wednesday evening, I enjoyed a Chip Concert with Florida Georgia Line and ZZ Top! Prior to the music, five builders pulled their custom baggers on stage and Dirty Bird Customs took home a win. What a great line up and a beautiful chilled night ride back to my cabin, just enough for a cozy hoodie. The Rat Hole Bike Show was up for grabs on Thursday again at the Buffalo Chip. I was thrilled to see the numbers of quality, great looking bikes rolling in to compete for the famous Rat Trophy featuring the Fat Bellied Rat’s Hole Rat. From the bike show, I took a quick ride down through Nemo and the National Forest area. I’d not been able to ride much since arriving, so I took a quick break circling back up to Rapid City to the Black Hills Harley-Davidson where a large alternate venue was hopping. There are several vendors who choose to set up at this venue which has become very popular for great prices, National Vendors and yummy food! My grazing was interrupted by a call that one of the builders I knew won the dresser/touring category at the Rat Hole show and he was able to do a photo shoot with me out by gorgeous Bear Butte and Bear Butte Lake. This was a perfect way to watch the sun go down in Sturgis at the Butte. Back into town, I met up with my riding buddies and we spent a night prowling Main Street. (Details are spared…what happens in Sturgis, stays!) Friday gave me a pouty face knowing it was my last day, but not for long as I pulled the trigger on a new set of HeliBar Handlebars. I’d been eyeing a change in handlebars for my Street Glide as the ride up with my short arms, caused a pain in my neck and shoulder blades. They brought my bars right back to my hands in a relaxed position that I’d only dreamed of in all my years of riding. New bars on, I made a quick trip out to say bye to all my friends I’d made at Full September 2014

Throttle Saloon, The Chip, through the breathtaking Spearfish Canyon and back to town as we all bought our souvenirs to return home. Back at our cabin, packing our belongings was interrupted by some hunky fellas from Iceland. Not fitting the profile, per say, I did some googling…in more ways than one…and found one of them was previously named the first billionaire in Iceland. Hmmm….lucky guy! He was riding this awesome Indian, customized by Roland Sands. It was beautiful and well crafted. While you may think this is the end of the story, it is not by any means. On Saturday morning, our new rowdy neighbors woke the group early. While the group I rode up with were

taking a two day journey home, I made a wacky decision to run it all in one day! Off I went….847 miles in 16 hours and 20 minutes. Alone. Me, my bike and the highway through four states! Bam! My Sturgis 2014 trip got a cherry on top by upping my one day, long distance ride mileage record. Next time, I’m gunning for that iron butt award! CONGRESS EXTENDS HIGHWAY TRUST FUND Acting hours before the government was set to cut payments to states for highway and mass-transit projects, Congress engineered a $10.8 billion short-term funding patch to keep the Highway Trust Fund solvent through next May. Following several delays, the Senate approved a Housedrafted highway bill just ahead of a midnight August 1st deadline to keep federal money flowing even though the HTF has nearly exhausted its reserves because fuel taxes haven’t kept up with spending. The federal gas tax of 18.4 cents a gallon, which helps finance the trust fund, has remained unchanged since 1993, and drivers have increasingly turned to more fuel-efficient cars and higher-mileage motorcycles. But the issue is far from resolved, as lawmakers failed to reach a long-term solution to pay for federally funded transportation projects and gives President Barack Obama occasion to promote his ideal transportation measure; the “GROW AMERICA Act”; a $302 billion four-year surface transportation reauthorization proposal which happens to include a push for mandatory motorcycle helmet laws nationwide: “Title IV — Highway And Motor Vehicle Safety,” SEC. 4004: Amendment to Motorcyclist Safety Grant Criteria, the GROW AMERICA Act would amend Section 405(f) of title 23, United States Code by inserting the following: “SUPPORT ACTIVITY — The (Transportation) Secretary or the Secretary’s designee may engage in activities with States and State legislators to consider proposals related to motorcycle helmet use laws.” While the temporary fix will kick the debate into next year, after the November elections and the swearing in of a new Congress, don’t wait to contact your Senators and Representatives to let them know where you stand! SELF-DRIVING CARS JUST AROUND THE CORNER Cars that drive themselves are almost here. They’ll be for sale in 2020, if not earlier. “Prototypes have shown that the technology works,” according to The Kiplinger Letter, a business bulletin passed along to NCOM by A.I.M. Attorney Ralph C. Buss, “and major automakers are racing to commercialize it.” The shift to “autonomy” has already begun. Cameras, radar sensors and tiny computers let a growing number of new models park themselves, brake automatically, or take the wheel when drivers stray from their lanes. Think of it as cruise control that navigates, and never gets tired or distracted. Automakers are just getting started…advances likely in the next few years: brighter headlights that’ll double as sensors to gauge following distances and detect obstacles ahead; software with artificial intelligence to control the car and anticipate other drivers’ actions; new cameras capable of “seeing” lane dividers through snow or fog. 36

Though fatalities are on the decline, 30,000 people still die in accidents each year, mostly caused by human error. While not foolproof, safety advocates believe electronics and software can slash accident rates, and fewer accidents and less damage will lead to lower insurance premiums. Traffic experts also predict an economic boon, as autopilot software lifts productivity by allowing workers to do more while commuting, can keep older workers on the job longer, and lets more people work farther away by making long commutes less tedious as the car does most of the driving and coordinates with other self-driving cars to avoid traffic jams even in congested environments. Lest motorcyclists feel left out of the mix, Google recently requested permission in California to test riderless motorcycles on public roads. A prototype motorcycle that balances and steers without a rider has already been built by Google engineers. SPLITTING CONTROVERSY California is the only state in the nation that does not outlaw the practice of lane-splitting, in which motorcyclists use the space between lanes when traffic is slow or has stopped. Though not “legal,” neither is the practice illegal, and until now the California Department of Motor Vehicles and the California Highway Patrol were encouraging riders to do it safely and recently even published online guidelines for safe tactics to minimize the risk of accident. But now the CHP has come under fire from a state employee who charged the police agency had exceeded its authority by recommending lane splitting. The Office of Administrative Law agreed, and told the CHP to take down the guidelines, now removed since July 7th. Since the CHP’s decision to remove the guidelines, motorcycle safety experts and motorcycling organizations have stepped up to voice their concerns about the future of lane-splitting, which supporters contend decreases traffic and helps motorcyclists’ avoid overheating, and increases rider safety by reducing the number of accidents involving motorcycles hit from behind while stuck in traffic jams. AUSTRALIAN “BIKIES” SCORE TAXPAYER-FUNDED WAR CHEST Queensland ‘bikies’ will have nearly $180,000 in taxpayer money to fight the state’s tough criminal motorcycle gang laws after a landmark High Court decision ordering the South Australian government to pay the Mongols MC $178,000 in legal costs after losing a high-profile court battle four years ago to banish gangs from its borders. Bikie sources told the Gold Coast Bulletin that the money would be tipped straight into the bid to challenge the Vicious and Lawless Association Disestablishment laws pushed through by the Newman Gov’t. After covering legal bills, any remainder would go into a “fighting fund” to challenge similar laws being used in Queensland and NSW.

InAIM-2622-F-Ad 2010, SA’sforso-called “bikie gangs” -- including the Finks, Tennessee.indd 1 who later became the Mongols -- formed a united front to challenge the state’s anti-association laws in the High Court. The High Court ruled the laws obliged the state’s courts to impose control orders on bikies at the request of the Attorney-General and police, without any evidence. It dubbed the legislation “constitutionally repugnant” and said it undermined the independence of judges and forced them to find guilt “based on assumptions.” STURGIS HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2014 The Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame is designed to recognize individuals or groups who have made a long term positive impact on the motorcycle community, and The Freedom Fighters Hall of Fame recognizes the commitment and sacrifices individuals across the nation, and world, have made to protect the rights of motorcyclists. For 2014, Deb “Tiger” Chandler was recently inducted into the Freedom Fighters HoF in ceremonies held August 6th at The Lodge in Deadwood during Sturgis Bike Week: “In partnership with the Colorado Confederation of Clubs (CCOC), she assumed the role of Colorado Commander of the Coalition of Independent Riders – a registration of independent riders. Tiger has worked tirelessly through the state legislature to address issues of importance to motorcyclists in Colorado including funding for beginning rider training and alcohol interlocking devices for motorcycles. She has also been instrumental in implementing a Biker Day at the Capital in Colorado as a means of opening dialog between bikers and legislators.” In addition, six others were named to the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame: Clyde Fessler of Harley-Davidson, Jesse Jurrens of Legend Suspensions, daredevil Jay “Lightnin’” Bentley, bike-builder Keith Terry of Baggster LLC, drag racer Bonnie Truett of Truett and Osborn, and custom builder Paul Yaffe of Bagger Nation. WEIRD NEWS: TEEN FAKES ROBBERY TO BUY MOTORCYCLE The desire to own a motorcycle drove a minor to stage an armed robbery and even inflict wounds on himself to make September 2014

it look convincing. The Pune Cantonment police in 5:06 India 11/1/11 PM detained a 17-year-old boy for stealing Rs 1.27 lakh from his employer and later staging an armed robbery. Investigations revealed that the minor staged the robbery as he wanted to buy a motorcycle. A police inspector said the boy was working in Sankla’s travel agency. “On Saturday morning, Sankla gave the boy Rs 1.27 lakh and told him to deposit the money in the bank. However, the boy returned after some time with torn clothes and cuts on his wrists. He told (owner) Sankla that some unidentified persons stopped him while he was on his way to the bank, attacked him and snatched the cash from him before fleeing.” The proprietor rushed to the police station with the boy, where the inspector later noted: “I became suspicious as the cuts on the boy’s wrists looked self-inflicted. Moreover, he was unable to give proper description of the robbers. We then detained the boy and during sustained interrogation, he admitted that he had staged the robbery because the boy said he wanted to buy a motorcycle and, therefore, hatched the plot.” THE TALIBAN ENDORSES HONDA Taliban-published Azan magazine is quick to condemn America, but loves the Honda CG125. They say there’s no such thing as bad publicity, but Honda can’t be too pleased with the rave review it received from “Azan,” a quarterly magazine published by the Taliban. An English-language publication, “Azan” is radical propaganda intended to recruit disillusioned Muslims. The cover story for its third issue dealt with how to leave your life behind to join in the Jihad against the West, but buried in the pages of the issue was a full page spread titled “Steeds of War” that highlights the virtues of Honda’s CG125 as a vehicle of choice for the Mujahideen. “All Praise is due to Allah Who has made the Crusaders flee with a humilating defeat at the hands of the Mujahideen who have so little resources compared to them. We, the Mujahidin, have won the war with HONDA 125s valued at around $700,” the magazine boasts.
