“The Conflict” We sometimes think the conflict is just between God & the devil, but the devil is not an equal power to God. The conflict is not between good & evil, the conflict is between your “spirit and your flesh.” We are a three part being: “spirit, soul, and body.” Your spirit is who you really are, your “soul” is where your mind, will, and emotions are and your “body” is just the house your “spirit & soul” reside in. 1. Your “spirit” must be “born again.” 2. Your “soul” must have “its mind renewed.” 3. Your “body’ must be brought into “subjection.” When you get “born again” the Holy Spirit comes to reside in your “spirit.” If you don’t get your “mind renewed,” your “body” will never come unto “subjection” to the Word of God. That’s why we have so many backsliding Christians that are saved by the “Spirit” but are led by the “flesh.” Point #1: 1 Thess.5:23 “our spirit may be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Point #2: Eph. 1:13 “Your spirit was sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise.” Eph.4:30 “Whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.” The whole purpose of sealing is to keep the impurities (sin) out. Point #3: Rom. 6:14 “for sin shall not have dominion over you.” Therefore I make this bold statement based of the Word of God: “If you are truly a born again Christian and you do sin, your spirit man does not participate in that sin!” Your flesh participates and you will “Reap what you sowed.” But your “spirit remains sealed” keeping the impurities (sin) out. You now make a freewill choice to sin because you are “free from sin. Sin shall have no September 2016

dominion over you.” If you don’t “renew your mind you’ll never bring your body under subjection.” An American Indian proverb; “You have a good dog and a bad dog inside of you, if they get onto a fight which one wins? The one you feed the most!” This is the battle between your “spirit and flesh.” Which one do you feed the most? It is your choice. Rom.5:20-6:2 “…But where sin abounded, Grace much more abound. What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that Grace may abound? “GOD FORBID!” The “Flesh” has turned some of our ministers into life coaches and entertainers and have stopped reading the Good Book and started reading selfhelp books. The “Flesh” always seeks its own Identity and purpose, its own way of thinking by encouraging in self-effort, which is apart from the “spirit.” Paul warns us in Gal. 3:1 “O foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, that you should not obey the Truth (Word of God).” Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

Niagara Falls State Park Located in Niagara NY, 20 miles from Buffalo, the 400 acre Niagara Falls State Park is the oldest state park in the US, established as the Niagara Reservation in 1885. Frederick Law Olmstead, designer on NY City’s Central Park, created a landscape of scenic trails through woods and along the river. Of course, the centerpieces of the park are the Falls themselves. Actually, there are three falls-American, Horseshoe, and Bridal Veil. 75,750 gallons flow over the American and Bridal Veil Falls, every second, hitting the base with 280 tons of force, while the 681,750 gallons per second falling over Horseshoe Falls hits the base with a staggering 2,500 tons of force. The erosion caused by this tremendous flow of water, whose sources are lakes Michigan, Superior, Huron, and Erie, has moved the falls back over 7 miles during the past 12,000 years. The flow over the American Falls was stopped once, in 1969, when an earthen dam allowed geologists six months to study the effects of erosion. Due to the cost of any remedy, they allowed nature to takes its course. The highlight activities at the park include the famous Maid of the Mist boat tour at the base of the falls. In addition, you can hop on/hop off the Discover Niagara Shuttle along the 14 mile route, with 12 destination sites. Also, you can take the Cave of the Winds Tour, ride the Scenic Trolley, and hike the Niagara Gorge. As Judy and I were short of time, as we had just photographed a wedding, in Quantico, and traveled the Northeast US, we opted for seeing the falls from the Canadian side. Actually, the best view of both the American and Canadian falls is from Canada, so after visiting the park, be sure to cross the border. At night, huge spotlights shine, from Canadian 8

buildings, creating a colorful, changing lightshow. Fireworks over the falls usually occur at 10PM on Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday, as well as, holidays. There is a website for the schedule, by month. We, also, took the Behind the Falls experience, where you travel tunnels, carved behind a portion of the falls-poncho required. A passport is not the only form of identification required to visit Canada, but it may as well be, as it is REQUIRED to get back in the US. Also, most handguns are either prohibited or restricted, as are magazine sizes, and any allowed firearm requires a $50 registration. Be sure and check the Canadian regulations and seek nearby places in the US to store weapons, as jail time may result from noncompliance, and I know most bikers carry a weapon. I have traveled a lot, but the power and beauty of Niagara Falls must be high on everyone’s bucket list. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper

Buffalo Valley AMA Pro Hillclimb by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley Photos: Cooper Chilton The AMA Pro Hillclimb Expert Singles Hillclimb Race at the Buffalo Valley Middle Tennessee Dragway took place on July 30, 2016. Although the day was a little warm the action was really hot. The chemists were mixing racing fuel, the riders were doing their best to walk up and check out the traction on the hill. As steep as it is that’s wasn’t easy. The hill had a couple of berms to jump and every racer had a little different variation on how to climb the hill. Some made it to the top and some didn’t. These are the results. If you haven’t taken in an AMA Hillclimb I highly recommend it. These folks will have you drop jawed at how to fly up the hill throwing mud and zookin’ all over the place. 1

September 2016

HOW TO GET STARTED

IT’S REALLY THAT SIMPLE!

1. Go to any Registration Stop listed on the map with a red star or on the Stops pages. The information that you provide when you sign-up for your FREE Ride Card only goes to us and will NOT be used for any other purpose than this contest, but may be shared with the dealership you get your card from. You will not have to provide any other personal information again after this. You will be handed your FREE Ride Card right then. It has a unique number on it- take note because that is YOURS and ONLY YOURS. Once you get your card, you do not need to register again. The Ride Cards do NOT expire so hold on to it. THIS WILL BE A YEARLY CONTEST, so you’ll need it next season too! 2. Once you have your Ride Card go to any or all of the stops listed this month and show them your card! Registration Stops are also Ride Stops. That stop will write your unique Ride Card number down. Let them know if you spend over $10 there because your Ride Card number will get counted twice! 3. Check the following months issue to see if your Ride Card number is listed as a winner. You must check this each month as Thunder Roads® staff will not contact you and let you know you won. If your Ride Card number is listed as a winner, email TennesseeThunderRun@gmail.com to claim your prize. In the email please provide your name, address, phone number and Ride Card number. Again, the information only goes to us at Thunder Roads®. Please note: You only have 45 days to claim your prize from the 1st month it is listed in the magazine.

1. Get your Tennessee Ride Card. 2. Get the list of Stops each month from your Thunder Roads® Tennessee Magazine, our website, or Facebook page. 3. Ride out to these Stops and show them your card. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH!

We will be adding more Registration/Ride Stops and Ride Stops across the State every month, so make sure to pick-up your copy each month of Thunder Roads® Tennessee to see that month’s Ride Stops and also to see if your Ride Card is listed as a winner!

A FEW FACTS • • •

• • • •

Winners are randomly picked from each Registration/Ride Stop and Ride Stop. The more places you check-in the greater your chances are of winning a prize from that stop or one of our sponsors prizes! If you spend $10 or more at any of the Registration/Ride Stops or Ride Stops your Ride Card number gets counted twice! Please note: The reason why this contest is FREE to you, the rider, is because of our sponsors and stops. So we want to encourage everyone to support them in return. That is why we count your Ride Card number twice if you spend $10 or more. You can check-in 1 time each week at each Registration/ Ride Stop & Ride Stop. Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in. Some prize drawings are specific to only check-ins for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from checkin’s season long. ALL CHECK-INS remain in the system for end of the season prizes!

September 2016

Thunder Roads® Tennessee will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Bike Nights may have special booth for Ride Card registrations. We will list these events each month on the Event Stops page in the magazine. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives to those checking in with their previously issued Ride Card at these stops. Thunder Roads® Tennessee will also be working with charities and various nonprofit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events. The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all Stops. Some Thunder Roads® Tennessee Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads® will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your TENNESSEE RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! This is not simply a “Chinese Fire Drill” or maddash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.

JUST GET OUT AND RIDE! We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. If your business would like to be a Stop or be a Sponsor, please email us at TennesseeThunderRun@gmail.com

LET’S RIDE! As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at TennesseeThunderRun@gmail.com

Lady Rider

Tammy Noble

47 years old and embracing adventure! I think I saw my first motorcycle when I was about 4 years old. My uncles and my father all had bikes and us kids would wait in a line at the driveway for OUR TURN! A thrilling zip around the block and back! Then as I got older our family moved out to the country and I became exposed to 4-wheelers and go carts and dirt bikes. Mostly the boys rode and the girls watched. Planting that early seed of doubt that boys are better and girls just can’t handle it. At age 22 I bought a Sea Doo wave runner and fell in love with “riding on the water” and even competed locally at Percy Priest Lake. I later at age 24 bought my first dirt bike, a used 1984 Honda 200 and I thought that was the coolest feeling ever. I even took a certification class in Scuba Diving at age 26! I put my adventurous side on hold to raise two little girls who are now 19 and 21. At age 44, I found myself at a cross roads, starting over. I remarried in 2014 to my soulmate. My husband came into our marriage with a Victory Kingpin and quickly traded that up to a 2014 Victory Cross Country. Riding all over the beautiful country side of Tennessee became our new passion. We took off to get lost on several trips and even slayed the Dragon together in east Tennessee. I felt my adventurous side coming back to life! I started wondering if I could handle a street bike? I started reading and paying attention to other women riders and with my loving husbands support and encouragement it seemed like a fabulous and exciting idea! I took the MSF beginners riding course on Mother’s Day 2016 and passed! I was on my way! My first bike was a Honda Shadow 600 VLX. (Pearl) and she took great care of me, keeping me safe and teaching me the fundamentals. Just last week my husband and I after reading and researching and window shopping, decided on a beautiful 2016 Victory Vegas! (Willow) I’m a new rider with lots to learn...but there is no denying that smile and thrill in my soul, a little girl who used to watch the boys and wonder....”can I do that”? Life is short but the roads are long! Here’s to Wind in your Hair and Knees in the Breeze! We would love to hear YOUR story! ALL ladies are welcome and encouraged to join and contribute to our monthly Lady Rider column. Please submit your story and photos to: ThunderRoadsTn@gmail.com

Music City HOG Turns

30

13 senior managers of Harley-Davidson purchased the company from AMF in 1980. At this time, the bikes had a reputation for unreliability and were furthermore under attack by the dumping of cheaper bikes from Japan. The new owners were committed to reviving The Motor Company as demonstrated by the 1981 introduction of the innovative and high quality Superglide II, with its rubber isolated, five speed powertrain, and its successful lobbying for the tariff on large imported bikes, granted in 1983. The same year, to promote customer loyalty and Harley riding as a lifestyle, the national Harley Owners Group was formed. According to Arnie Beaman, former Regional Manager, ”Willie G” came up with the name and logo on the back of a napkin, now kept in the Harley-Davidson Museum. Mr. Lannie Boswell already recognized the need for riding companions to keep the lifestyle and loyalty alive. He formed the Music City Riders in the mid 1960’s. We all know that usually if you don’t have someone to ride with, soon your bike ends up like that exercise equipment, covered by clothes in the corner. So in 1986, soon after Harley authorized local chapters, he formed Music City HOG #4938. The Music City Chapter members continues to be extremely active, with Tuesday night dinner rides, weekend rides, including several overnighters, monthly socials, and charity events. They know how to wear out those Harleys! Boswell’s continues to be one of the most supportive sponsors of its HOG Chapters, which now include the Nashville Chapter, the Ring of Fire Chapter, and the Upper Cumberland Chapter. In celebration of 30 years the HOG’s were treated to a steak dinner and dancing to the music of Vinyl Radio. In the “International Champion Weinee Bite”, Music City Director Dan Pesce and his wife Chris were crowned Champions. Congratulations to Bubba Boswell and the HOG members for keeping up the lifestyle! Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper

THE SHED SMOKEHOUSE & JUKE JOINT by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley Once upon a time when Lowe’s was getting started they had big stores with outside lumber yards. They also had ¼” bolts in the 3/8” bolt bin but we won’t talk about that. When they changed to putting everything in one “Big Box” they sold off the old layout properties. What do you do with a big store that is set up with an outside lumber yard?? Well, if you are looking to make a statement with the biggest and most dynamic Harley Davidson dealership in the state you jump on one of these buildings and turn it into motorcycle Shangri-La!! That’s what the folks at Smokey Mountain Harley Davidson did. They turned the store into a huge showroom and service center with a real Tennessee mountain retreat flair. The place is beautiful and feels like home. They even have folks there who don’t have a job other than to make you feel at home and make sure you find what you’re after or find a place to refresh and chill if you are out riding the mountains, Cherohala Skyway or running the Dragon. They even have Cracker Barrel rocking chairs out front if you just want to sit and watch the world roll by. If you are looking for action then you have to check out what took over the lumber yard – it’s The Shed Smokehouse & Juke Joint. It’s a wild combination of an outdoor concert hall with a roof, closed circuit TV set up and a big time sound system. The shed has outside bars when they have bands, huge fire pits and a ton of parking. This year the bands have included, Leon Russell, John Anderson, Ted Nugent and The Kentucky Headhunters. The place is big enough to handle 2000 people. Talk about a biker party!!! All of that action will have you working up a big appetite. That’s where the smokehouse comes in. They serve smoked chicken, pork, brisket and more. You can get a “Boss Hog” with a side of ribs, fresh pulled pork and brisket or pulled pork and chicken nachos and more. The Mad Max is their best seller. It’s a layer of sliced beef brisket, cheddar cheese topped with pulled pork and slaw. The Black & Blue burger has Cajun spices and blue chez crumbles. You really need to try the Pool Hall Slaw with a Fat Boy. That’s a burger topped with pulled pork and smoked Gouda cheese. You can also get a pork taco, chicken samich on Texas toast, wraps and a whole bunch more. They make their own BBQ sauces and they focus on good flavor, not burning out your taste buds. How about that?? BBQ sauce you can really taste. Too cool. What’s really cool is that you can wash all this down with your favorite brew, soft drink or sweet tea. They take great care to make sure you have a comfortable place to chill after your brews so you can uncross your eyeballs before you get back on the bike. Safety first you know!!! The ladies will appreciate the ultra-clean restrooms 28

and really classy decorations. If you haven’t been to Shangri-La then you have to put this on your bucket list and check it out. The Smokey Mountain Harley Davidson Dealership and The Shed Smokehouse & Juke Joint are located at 1820 W. Lamar Alexander Parkway, Maryville, Tennessee 37801. You can also find info at SMH-D.com or call them at (865) 977-1669. If you want to come for one of the big shows I highly recommend you get tickets early because they go fast. When you are transiting the Zen world at Smokey Mountain Harley Davidson tell them Bulldog sent you!!!! If you are out riding to eat and see me please come up and tell me your favorite places to go when you’re hungry and thirsty. “Will Ride to Eat” will be an ongoing article in Thunder Roads Magazine of Tennessee and we want to put the spotlight on the great history and variety of Tennessee’s biker friendly establishments.

Bullet Points

THE GREAT CALIBER DEBATE AND WHICH PISTOL IS RIGHT FOR YOU If you’re like me, you have put a lot of miles on your bike during the spring and summer. I, for one, never seem to find as much time as I would like to ride - even though I’ve put nearly 12,000 miles on my Road Glide so far this year. But one thing I know for sure – the shadows are getting longer earlier in the day – a sure sign that fall is right around the corner. When I hop on my bike for a ride, inevitably I’m carrying one of my pistols with me. It’s second nature. I have a gun safe full of pistols to choose from. And one thing is for certain, I am not as concerned with the caliber as I am my comfort level shooting the pistol in any type of bad situation I might find myself in. And you should feel the same way. Much has been written about what I term the “Great Caliber Debate.” If you were to ask ten different people at a gun show what their favorite caliber is, and why, you would most likely receive several different answers. What you may hear could go something like this, “I want to leave the biggest hole in the bad guy I can.” Don’t fall into this trap. With today’s modern personal protection ammunition, caliber, and the size of the entry hole, are becoming less important than hitting where you’re aiming. Your shot has to find center mass. But there are other considerations. An everyday carry (EDC) pistol is a very personal decision. I have large hands and fairly thick arms. I can absorb a lot of recoil. And because of my size, I can conceal a larger framed pistol without it printing too much through my clothing. If you’re of smaller stature, you should certainly consider a smaller framed pistol that will easily conceal in a belt holster or pocket holster. Avoid pistols which have sharp edges and can easily snag during your draw. If you’re of the fairer sex, and carry a purse, you may want to carry a medium sized pistol which will fit in a segregated area of your purse. You may also want to consider one of the purses which have a special compartment for your gun. These certainly offer some advantages over carrying concealed in a purse which is not designed for hiding a pistol. Now, let’s discuss caliber. The general rule of thumb is too shoot the largest caliber you can comfortably shoot. I own pistols in many calibers: .380, .38 special, .357 magnum, 9mm, .40 Smith & Wesson, .357 SIG, .45 ACP, 44

September 2016

magnum and 10mm. I can shoot them all comfortably on the range. However, I would not trust myself with the .44 magnum in a high stress situation like a strong-armed robbery. This caliber, while offering a significant amount of “knock down” power, has so much recoil that follow up shots would be tough to make quickly. I also avoid the so called “pocket guns.” I own a Ruger .380 which my hands tend to swallow. While it’s easy to conceal, the pistol is so snappy that I do not shoot as accurately with it. My recommendation is to carry the largest framed pistol you can easily conceal– in the largest caliber you can shoot accurately under pressure. And keep in mind that larger is heavier. You will tire carrying it all day. Now, let’s talk specifically about caliber. As I wrote earlier, today’s selfprotection ammunition offers a huge improvement over the hardball, full metal jacket and semi-wad cutter projectiles of the past. Full metal jacket projectiles tend to pass completely through the bad guy unless heavy bone structures are hit. The most important consideration of stopping power is the shock the wound channel creates. And with old full metal jacket ammo the wound channel is the size of the bullet - .451 inches if you’re shooting .45 ACP. With a wound channel that size it will take time for the bad guy to become incapacitated – which means he may well be on his feet and coming hard at you. Today’s personal protection ammunition is designed to quickly expand on impact making very large wound channels and dumping all of the energy of the cartridge (350+ foot pounds of energy in .45 ACP) in the bad guy. Besides the large wound channel, the energy transfer from the projectile creates a huge amount of tissue damage and shock. This is what will quickly incapacitate and eliminate the threat the bad guy poses. The same benefits are realized from personal protection ammo in smaller calibers like 9mm - and even .380 ACP. If you choose your pistol well, it fits your hands well and you can shoot it comfortably under stress, any of these calibers will be effective for personal protection. Keep the shiny side up until next month! Molon labe, Mike Noirot

WE’RE DIFFERENT IN THE SOUTH……and we like it that way and aint about to change. Aint is an actual word and essentially means “no way in hell”. A possum is a flat animal that sleeps in the middle of the road. There are 5,000 types of snakes and spiders and 4,998 of them live in the South. If it grows, it’ll stick ya. If it crawls, it’ll bite cha. Onced and Twiced are words. For is pronounced fer. It is not a shopping cart, it is a buggy! Jawl-P? Means, Did you all go to the bathroom? People actually grow, eat and like okra. Fixinto is one word. It means I’m going to do that. There is no such thing as lunch. There is only dinner and then there’s supper. Iced tea is appropriate for all meals and you start drinking it when you’re two. When a Southern woman says “well, bless your heart, sugar”, she either really means it or she’s literally telling you that you’re a dumb-ass twit. “There’s a story there” means someone has a really juicy past. The word jeet is actually a question meaning, ‘Did you eat?’ You don’t have to wear a watch, because it doesn’t matter what time it is, you work until you’re done or it’s too dark to see. We fly the American flag alongside the Southern flag with equal pride. You don’t Push buttons, you Mash em’. Ya’ll is singular. All ya’ll is plural. All the festivals across the state are named after a fruit, vegetable, grain, insect, or animal. You only own seven spices: salt, pepper, garlic powder, mustard, hot sauce and ketchup. The local papers cover national and international news on one page, but require 6 pages for local high school sports, the motor sports, and gossip. You believe that the first day of deer season is a national holiday. You know what a hissyfit is and if the young-uns throw one in a store, they’ll know the meaning of “wear the hide off your tail”. Fried catfish is the other white meat. We don’t need no dang Driver’s Ed. If our Mama says we can drive, we can drive! There’s unique names to designate town areas; “Screeching Cat’s Holler”, “Squirrel Tail Ridge”, “Dogs Humpin’ Ciff”, “Shotgun Waterin’ Hole” or “Bucksnort Hill”. Even if you aint from the South, when you visit us, you dang sure will be talkin’ like us by the time you 34

git on down the road back yonder to home. Bye Bye now; y’all come back real soon, ya’ hear? My dog sleeps about 20 hours a day. He has his food prepared for him. His meals are provided at no cost to him. He visits the Dr. once a year for his checkup and again during the year, if any medical needs arise. For this he pays nothing, and nothing is required of him. He lives in a nice neighborhood in a house that is much larger than he needs, but he is not required to do any upkeep. If he makes a mess, someone else cleans it up. He has his choice of luxurious places to sleep, He receives these accommodations absolutely free. He is living like a king and has absolutely no expenses whatsoever. All of his costs are picked up by others who earn a living. I was just thinking about all this, and suddenly it hit me like a ton of bricks ~ My dog is a damn Congressman! _______________________________________________ A circus owner runs an ad for a lion tamer and two people show up. One is a biker in his mid-forties, and the other is a gorgeous blond in her mid-twenties. The circus owner tells them, “I’m not going to sugar coat it. This is one ferocious lion. He ate my last tamer so you two had better be good or you’re history.” “Here’s your equipment --chair, whip and a gun.” “Who wants to try out first?” The girl says, “I’ll go first.” She walks past the chair, the whip and the gun and steps right into the lion’s cage. The lion starts to snarl and pant and begins to charge her. About halfway there, she throws open her coat revealing her beautiful naked body. The lion stops dead in his tracks, sheepishly crawls up to her and starts licking her feet and ankles. He continues to lick her entire body for several minutes and then rests his head at her feet. The circus owner’s jaw is on the floor. “I’ve never seen a display like that in my life.” - He turns to the biker and asks, “Can you top that?” The biker says, “Hell yeah; just get that lion outta’ there.” Yesterday afternoon I went to our local gun shop to get a small handgun for personal protection. When I was ready to pay for the pistol and ammo, the cashier said, “Strip down, facing me.” After the hysterical shrieking stopped, I realized that she was telling me how to place my credit card in the card reader. Simple case of miscommunication. Geez!

Darryl Worley & Friends at Bumpus Harley-Davidson® Darryl Worley, most known for his hit song, “Have You Forgotten”, is also a major benefactor for several Tennessee charities. His 15th Annual Tennessee River Run includes a scenic motorcycle ride from Pickwick Landing State Park on Oct. 8th followed by a concert in downtown Savannah. The proceeds go to the Darryl Worley Foundation, which serves the needs of people in Hardin and McNairy Counties and Northwestern Alabama and Northeastern Mississippi. It made the Darryl Worley Cancer Center possible and supports St. Jude’s Research Hospital, LeBonheur Children’s Hospital, and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. For more information on the River Run, go to tnriverrun.org. As a kick-off for the River Run, Bumpus Harley-Davidson, Murfreesboro and Jackson, hold Hitmakers and Harleys events at the dealerships. Judy and I attended the Murfreesboro event and Scott and Denise attended in Jackson. In Murfreesboro, Worley performed “1st Christian” for Jerry Bumpus, patriarch of the Bumpus Harley family. He, also, performed such hits as “I Miss My Friend”, “Sounds Like Life To Me”, “Second Wind”, “Beautiful Life”, and, of course, “Have You Forgotten”. He was joined by Phil O’Donnell, who sang his hit writings including “Back When I Knew it All”, and “She Won’t Be Lonely Long”. Casey Beathard performed his songs including “Rock On”, “Find Out Who Your Friends Are”, and “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem”. Rob Crosby’s songs included “A Good Hand”, “Concrete Angel”, “Hard Rain Don’t Last”, “Til The Last Shots Fired”, and “Rise Above It”. This all-star cast performed into “overtime” to the enjoyment of the attendees. More money was raised, for the Foundation, through a silent auction, Diamond Candles (each containing a stone), diamond earrings, commemorative Jack Daniels bottles, guitar signed by the performers, loaded gift basket from Penny’s Closet, 2-VIP Pit Passes to the Gulf Coast Jam, signed lyrics by each of the performers, fishing trip, including accommodations and professional guide, with Worley, signed George Strait blue jeans, a signed Jack Daniels whisky barrel and a day in Lynchburg, and a day long party, at Tom Bumpus’ Farm With No Chickens. In Jackson, Scott and Denise enjoyed a similar night with Worley, Wynn Varble (“A Little More Country Than That”, and “Waiting On A Woman”), Johnathan Singleton (cowrote songs including ”Don’t” , “Watching Airplanes”, and “Why Don’t We Just Dance”), and Andy Griggs (“You Won’t Ever Be Lonely”, “I’ll Go Crazy”, and “She’s More”). These are great events as is the River Run. Be sure to catch next year’s Bumpus events. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper

THE AIM/NCOM MOTORCYCLE E-NEWS SERVICE is brought to you by Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM), and is sponsored by the Law Offices of Richard M. Lester. If you’ve been involved in any kind of accident, call us at 1-(800) ON-A-BIKE or visit www. ON-A-BIKE.com. NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) H-D CEASES SALES OF PERFORMANCE DEVICES THAT ADD TO AIR POLLUTION Without conceding, Harley-Davidson will pay $15 million in fines and penalties to settle a federal lawsuit brought by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) accusing the American motorcycle-maker of selling illegal performance devices that increase pollution. Under terms of the settlement on Thursday, August 19, 2016 Harley is to stop selling its “Screamin’ Eagle” Pro Super Tuners by August 23, and to buy back and destroy all such tuners in stock at its dealerships. H-D must also deny warranty claims if owners continue to use the “illegal devices.” The consent decree resolves government allegations that Harley-Davidson sold roughly 340,000 “super tuners” since 2008 that, once installed, cause motorcycles to emit higher amounts of certain air pollutants than what the Milwaukee-based manufacturer certified to the EPA. According to the EPA, the modified settings increase power and performance, but also increase the motorcycles’ emissions of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides. Harley did not admit liability, and said in a statement it disagrees with the government’s position arguing that the devices were designed and sold to be used in “competition only.” The Motor Company said the settlement represents “a good faith compromise with the EPA on areas of law we interpret differently, particularly EPA’s assertion that it is illegal for anyone to modify a certified vehicle even if it will be used solely for off-road/closedcourse competition.” An EPA spokesman said that the vast majority of these tuners were used on public roads, and the sale of such “defeat devices” violates the federal Clean Air Act. Harley was also accused of selling more than 12,600 motorcycles that were not covered by an EPA certification that ensures a vehicle meets federal clean air standards. “Given Harley-Davidson’s prominence in the industry, this is a very significant step toward our goal of stopping the sale of illegal aftermarket defeat devices that cause harmful pollution on our roads and in our communities,” said John Cruden, head of the Justice Department’s environmental and natural resources division. 42

The EPA has been investigating after-market part emission issues for more than five years. In 2012, Suzuki Motor Corp paid an $885,000 fine to EPA for selling 25,458 ATVs and dirt bikes because they were built to allow for the installation of an aftermarket part that increased horsepower and emissions. CALIFORNIA LEGALIZES LANE SPLITTING, GOVERNOR SIGNS BILL INTO LAW California has become the first state to formally recognize lane splitting as a legal maneuver for motorcyclists, as Governor Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 51 into law on Friday, August 19, 2016. The legislation does not specify rules for lane splitting, but simply a) defines lane splitting as “driving a motorcycle, that has 2 wheels in contact with the ground, between rows of stopped or moving vehicles in the same lane, as specified”; and b) authorizes the California Highway Patrol (CHP), in consult with other agencies and organizations, to “develop educational guidelines relating to lane splitting in a manner that would ensure the safety of the motorcyclist, drivers and passengers.” Lane splitting has long existed in a legal gray area in California, without being expressly prohibited nor allowed, but permitted by law enforcement. The CHP published educational guidelines on lane-splitting in 2012, but regulators later ruled the agency had no authority to make public policy. The bipartisan bill, sponsored by Assembly members Bill Quirk (D-Hayward) and Tom Lackey (R-Palmdale), passed unanimously through the state Senate 38-0 and the Assembly 74-0 and essentially clarifies that the CHP does in fact have the authority and permission to devise guidelines for splitting lanes. Many studies have found proper lane splitting to be safe, and the practice of “filtering” through traffic to reduce congestion is legal in much of the world. RESTRICTING ETHANOL LIMITS IN AMERICA’S FUEL NCOM Board Member Dave “Animal” Reid (Touring Groups Liaison to the National Coalition of Motorcyclists) recently reported that; “I sent a letter to my congresswoman about the EPA’s desire to increase the ethanol content up from E-10 to E-15, and what it might do to all manner of small and air cooled motors. She responded, saying that a congressman from Texas had introduced a bill that would prohibit the EPA Administrator from introducing anything greater than 9.7% into the fuel supplies. Folks of both our Confederation of Clubs (COC) and ABATE inquired about the bill, and I’ve tracked it in the U.S. House of Representatives - it’s fresh and has quite a list of co-sponsors, so with other changes happening in the world, with the bipartisan support it seems to have, it may see some forward movement.”

That measure, House Resolution 5180, was introduced on May 10, 2016 by U.S. Representative Bill Flores (R-TX) “to alleviate the ethanol blend wall under the renewable fuel program,” and has been referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce. H.R. 5180 currently has 103 cosponsors from both sides of the aisle.

wait at a traffic light that is locked on red, as Governor Tom Wolf signed into law a bill sponsored by Rep. Stephen Bloom (R-Cumberland) that allows drivers of all vehicles the option to proceed with caution through an intersection when a traffic signal is unresponsive, only after exercising due care as provided by law.

The bill effectively circumvents the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) mandates for increasing levels of ethanol in our gasoline, capping the level at E-10, stating “the Administrator shall not determine any renewable fuel obligation for a calendar year that would result, directly or indirectly, in the introduction into commerce in the United States of a total volume of ethanol contained in transportation fuel that is greater than 9.70 percent of the total volume of gasoline projected to be sold or introduced into commerce in the United States for such calendar year.”

“If the vehicle detection system fails to recognize the vehicle and the driver has come to a complete stop, the driver must then make sure it is safe to continue, and only then would they be able to lawfully proceed with caution through the intersection,” Bloom explained to FOX43 News in Harrisburg, PA.

ILLINOIS OKAYS BLUE-DOT TAIL LIGHTS “Blue Dot” tail lights, so-called because a blue crystal mounted in the center of the red lens cover emits a violet hue when actuated, have become popular with motorcyclists for both customization and conspicuity, but most states’ traffic codes specify that a tail light must be red in color, and therefore they are illegal.

Deemed “Ride on Red,” Bloom added that the goal of the legislation is to solve practical problems while ensuring safety. “This law does not give drivers a free pass, but ensures a safe and legal option to avoid the danger and inconvenience of being trapped in perpetuity at a locked red light,” Bloom said. “This issue is more common than many people realize, especially on rural roads or during late hours when long periods often elapse before a heavier vehicle comes along to finally trip the unresponsive light.”

Supported by ABATE of Illinois, House Bill 4105 amends the Illinois Vehicle Code to “Provide that motorcycles may be equipped with a blue light or lights of up to one inch in diameter located on the rear of the motorcycle as a part of the motorcycle’s rear stop lamp or lamps,” and was signed into law by Governor Bruce Rauner on July 22, 2016, becoming effective January 1st. RIDERS AND DRIVERS NOW HAVE OPTION TO “RIDE ON RED” IN PENNSYLVANIA Motorcyclists and motorists in Pennsylvania will no longer have to September 2016

Originally intended only for motorcycles, which often fail to trigger traffic lights due to their smaller size, Senate Bill 1267 was expanded to apply to all vehicles.

Signed into law on July 20, 2016 as part of Act 101, the new law takes effect 60 days after the bill-signing, near the end of September.
