HE BEAUTIFUL DAYS of riding season and bike nights are here and there are so many bikes on the road right now, so please everyone be safe rubber side down. Did you know that Tuesday, June 19th is National Ride Your Motorcycle to Work Day? There are plenty of reasons to ride your bike to work. For one, it’s a great way to save gas and lower your carbon footprint, because most motorcycles get far better fuel economy than most cars. We consistently get 40 mpg or better out of our Harley, more if Scott is by himself instead of riding two-up with me. Motorcycles also use less pavement space, and less parking space than cars. They cost less to buy and insure than a car. Oh yeah, it’s fun, too! We are wrapping things up for this issue and getting ready to go to print. By the time you get your copy, we will have covered the Smoky Mountain Thunder Memorial Ride XVIII in Sevierville and we will be at the Great Smoky Mountain HOG Rally having a blast I’m sure! You can read about these two great events in the July issue and if you were at either of them, you might just see your pic. We would like to thank everyone that attend our 1st Rolling Bike Night at the Bent Wrench Roadhouse last month, we had a great turnout and great time and we hope to see you at the next one! We’ll be rolling into Murfreesboro June 23rd for Catalyst Cycles Bike Night at the Garage Bar, we’d love to see you there. You can also catch us at Covenant Confirmers Ministries 17th Annual Poker Run Saturday, June 9th, this is always a fun event for a great cause, benefitting the Tennessee Biker Medical Clinic.

“STRATEGIC OPPORTUNITIES” All of us Christians have experienced some trials and tribulations at one time or another. Some we brought upon ourselves and others we didn’t deserve. When we go through these valleys, we must remember God’s Word will see us through! As I look back at my own experiences, I now realize that God turned every one of them into a “Strategic Opportunity.” The key is to learn something from your valley experiences or you are doomed to repeat them! In my times of trials and tribulations I recall God’s Word; Gen. 50: 20 “ye thought EVIL against me, but God meant it unto GOOD” Rom. 8:28 “All things work together for the GOOD to them that love God” Jerm.29:11 “I know the thoughts I have towards you, thoughts of PEACE and not EVIL…to give you an expect end.” In the book of Ruth we read that Naomi had a husband and two sons but “there came a famine in the land,” that drove them into a foreign land, there her husband died. Her two sons had married women from that foreign land and then her two sons died. Naomi decided to go back to her own country. One daughterin-law, Ruth, decided to go with her. As they entered into Naomi’s home town the people recognized it was Naomi, whose name meant “JOY.” She told them not to call her Naomi anymore but call her “Mara” which meant “SORROW.” Sometimes we, like Naomi, let our circumstances change who we are. Have you changed your name, if so, to what? A drunk, an addict, broke busted and discussed, sick or depressed? We must remember who we are and Whose we are. Every trial and tribulation in our lives can be turned into a “Strategic Opportunity” if we’ll allow God to do so. Focus on God and not your circumstances. I now thank God for all my trails, tribulations and my enemies because they have only helped me to sharpen my skill set. We need to stop pulling and pushing God to go along with our purpose and find out what God’s purpose is for us. God will give June 2018
you a passion for your purpose and then you’ll find your provision and protection. Stop looking at your life through a microscope and start looking at it through a telescope. A microscope outlook will make you misidentify yourself. Understand that the trials & tribulations are just a chapter in your life and not the end of the book. Your life is not a book of short stories, it’s a novel. In Ruth 1:16-17 you’ll read about Ruth’s passion to go with Naomi. In Ruth 2:3 you’ll read about Ruth’s purpose. In Ruth 2:9 you’ll read about Ruth’s protection. In Ruth 2: 16 you’ll read about Ruth’s provision. Then in Ruth 4:13-17 you’ll read how Ruth married a wealthy man named Boaz and she then had a baby boy. When they placed the baby in the arms of the old woman Naomi, her breast filled with milk; “And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it.” And out of this bloodline comes the King of kings, the Lord Jesus Christ. Everything they went through was a strategic opportunity. Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

RIDER SAFETY
KNIGHTS IN SHINING ARMOR
We’ve probably all seen a movie with the heroic knight in shining armor riding into battle. The armor made the knight look intimidating and threatening. More importantly, it protected him (or her) from attack. Medieval helmets were worn to keep the knight’s head from injury. When coordinated with fashionable and comfortable body armor, there was a really good percentage the armor would save the knight’s life when he got hit. Ok, it probably wasn’t that comfortable. Fashionable, sort of! It reflected the knight’s status. The better the quality of the armor, the more important was the knight’s position. There were different kinds and pieces of armor to protect different body parts. You probably get where I’m going here…… motorcycle riders have armor of their own. If you have been a student of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s Basic RiderCourse, you know the importance of ATGATT. ALL THE GEAR ALL THE TIME. This includes over-the-ankle footwear, full-fingered gloves, long pants, long-sleeve jacket and a helmet manufactured to comply with the U.S. Department of Transportation standards. Commonly known as DOT. Let’s focus on the helmet. The helmet is the most important piece of safety equipment. The MSF states that head injury is the primary cause of death for riders. Helmet use can reduce your risk of brain injury by 67 percent. Federal government studies show that wearing your helmet can reduce your risk of dying in a crash by 37 percent. In a crash, it can protect your face, your brain and your life. The components of your helmet include the outer shell, the impact-absorbing liner, the comfort padding and the retention system. The outer shell is usually made from fiber-reinforced composites or a type of thermo plastics. It’s tough and compresses when it hits something hard, which in turn disperses energy to lessen the forces of the impact before this energy reaches your head. Inside the helmet is an impact-absorbing liner usually made of polystyrene that absorbs shock. This layer helps to cushion your head as the helmet makes an abrupt stop and your head wants to keep moving. Sitting next to your head is the comfort padding. You want your helmet to fit snugly and June 2018
this helps make it comfortable. Finally, the retention system, which we all call the “chin strap”. It keeps the helmet on your head in the event of a crash. So, fasten that strap securely.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, motorcycle helmet laws vary from state to state. There are currently 19 states and the District of Columbia with laws requiring motorcycle riders to wear a helmet. This is the universal helmet law. There are 28 states requiring only some riders to wear a helmet and Illinois, Iowa and New Hampshire have no helmet law. Take a look at this IIHS map found on IIHS.org for your state:
Riding a motorcycle increases your level of risk. Riding a motorcycle without a helmet elevates that risk. People have different reasons for not wanting to wear a helmet and this becomes your choice as you enter states with no law or partial law regarding helmet use. Take a few minutes to view the IIHS’s video on helmet laws. It can be found on the IIHS website: http://www.iihs.org/iihs/videos and focuses on a rider that survived an accident without wearing a helmet and the resulting brain injury. Think back to the knight in shining armor and why we as motorcyclists wear our own armor. There are many helmet manufacturers fitting all sizes and shapes of heads incorporating the latest technology. You spend a lot of money on your motorcycle; make the same investment on your armor to protect your head. And, as always, safe riding starts with you. Donna, along with being an avid riding enthusiast, is a MSF motorcycle safety coach for the state of TN and a HarleyDavidson Riding Academy coach. She is a member of Motor Maids, H.O.G and Ladies of Harley.

SUMMER CARRY AND KNOWING WHERE YOU CAN CONCEAL CARRY
G
reetings fellow bikers. Tracy and I just got back from our first long trip of 2018 last week. We rode with our local HOG Chapter to Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. Why Chambersburg? Simple. We went to take the Steel Toe Tour of the York, PA Harley-Davidson plant. This plant is where our 2017 CVO Ultra Limited was born last June. We also had a guided bus tour of Gettysburg National Military Park – a battlefield I have visited no less than a dozen times over the past 20 years. I would highly recommend both of these destinations. Pennsylvania was one of several longer trips we are doing this year including: Smoky Mountain Thunder, in Sevierville, Riley Children’s Hospital Miracle Ride, in Indianapolis, The Race of Gentlemen, in Wildwood, NJ, Laconia Motorcycle Week and Panama City Beach.
The first reason I bring these trips up is that I like to conceal carry a pistol year-round. And during the summer months, you need to be cognizant of how you carry. When you are dressed in lighter weight clothing, it is much easier to have your firearm “print” through your clothing. While I have noticed a lot of people open carry over the past year, this is just not for me, as I do not want to become a target for someone wanting to score a new firearm. Plus, I firmly believe, that surprise is the essence of self-defense. If you are open carrying, and you are unfortunate to be in the same place as a thug committing and armed robbery, you will be the first person the thug aims at. Now that I am a bit more - should I say, rotund - I typically carry outsidethe-waist band (OWB). While I own several great inside-the-waistband (IWB) holsters, most notably Crossbreed Super Tucks, most of my jeans are too tight now to comfortably wear IWB. Carrying OWB, inevitably leads to its own set of issues as doing so makes your sidearm more likely to print through your clothing – especially given the fact that I prefer full-sized or commander sized pistols. That being said, I always wear shirts that would be a bit on the large size for my frame when I am carrying OWB. This helps to conceal my pistol but because the shirt is a bit more flowy, it can make it more difficult to draw the pistol. If I decide to wear a shirt that is a bit tighter, I carry my compact SIG Sauer P938 (9 MM) in a small OWB holster. It certainly is easier to conceal than my larger frame semi-autos, but there is one drawback for a guy my size: my hand nearly swallows the little 9 MM up and makes shooting accurately more difficult. My suggestion for you is to carry the pistol you are most comfortable with, in a holster that makes it comfortable to wear. The optimum rig would be an IWB holster as they make concealing your firearm easier. A lot of people I know also use an ankle or pocket holster. There are certainly some quality rigs for both type of carry, but neither works well for me. I find
June 2018
ankle holsters uncomfortable and pocket holsters only work for compact pistols – which as I have said – are not my preferred firearm. You, however, may find one, or the other, a very viable solution. The second reason I mentioned our trips is that traveling outside your home state can present a dilemma if you prefer to leave your humble abode with your pistol. On our trip to Pennsylvania, we rode through Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland before we arrived in Chambersburg. All the states we traversed honor my Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit (HCP) with the exception of Maryland. I must admit, that I was very close to taking a pistol with me as the outbound trip would only require me to illegally possess my firearm for about 18 miles as we rode through the narrowest portion of Maryland. But knowing that the route home might require a longer ride through Maryland, I opted to keep my pistol at home, locked in my safe. (Note: This author never recommends illegally carrying a firearm in states which do not have reciprocal reciprocity with your state. Doing so can result in arrest, expensive legal fees and incarceration.) If you are planning a trip this summer, consider planning your ride to include only states you are legally allowed to carry in. Our trip to Pennsylvania could have been made by going through Kentucky, West Virginia and into the very western part of Pennsylvania before turning east towards York. But since we rode with a group, this was not an option on this occasion. Nor will it be an option for us when we leave in early June for Wildwood, NJ and The Race of Gentlemen. New Jersey has the some of the toughest gun laws in the U.S. and possessing a firearm there is a serious felony which inevitably would require time in their penal system. Something I am just not willing to risk. Below is a map highlighting states Tennessee have reciprocal concealed carry arrangements with. The states in green are good. The states in red are obviously very bad. If you are going to conceal carry, carry your pistol in a rig which is comfortable for you. If you are traveling this summer, you should consider only going to states you can legally carry in with routes that take you through states that honor your right to self-protection. Until next month, enjoy early summer and all the riding opportunities it provides. Molon Labe, Mike Noirot Note: CCW reciprocity map courtesy of the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA). Laws constantly change, so confirm reciprocity before traveling.

CONARD SHULTZ DAY AT BIKER RAGS By Bill Hall
Jeff and Pam Huggins, owners of Biker Rags, the go-to Knoxville biker accessory place met Conard Shultz, Knoxville TN native and vintage motorcycle guru, when they first opened Biker Rags back in 1994. They thought it would be cool to have a vintage Triumph in the store to display. When Conard invited them out to his shop and they saw his massive collection- they were hooked! Even today, over twenty years later, many of the bikes you’ll see in their vintage museum have been built, restored, brought back to life or somehow touched by Conard. Conard has been enjoying motorcycles longer than most of us have been alive. For over 65 years, Conard has been building, customizing, and restoring British motorcycles. Conard has been a mentor, mechanic and a true friend to many. This past year, Conard has been in a battle for his life. Despite weekly chemotherapy treatments and fighting a disastrous systemic infection, he has prevailed. He still shows up for Bike Nite at the Time Warp Tea Room and still orders parts for his customers. In 2014, Jeff and Pam honored Conard with the very first Conard Shultz Day at Biker Rags. They did it again in 2015 and 2016. Then in 2017, they had to put the celebration on hold because Conard wasn’t strong enough to get through the day. This past February Jeff asked Conard if he was up to another party and Conard gave them the thumbs up. So Saturday, April 21st, they once again celebrated Conard’s Day at Biker Rags. Friends and strangers alike gathered to celebrate to pay tribute to Conard Shultz and to admire vintage Honda’s, Triumph, BSA, Norton and other bikes. Among the crowd was Knox County Mayor, Tim Burchett, who shared numerous stories of Conard’s openness to help fellow bikers. Ken Knight, another close friend, spoke of cross country rides with Conard 60 years ago. Still kicking and still interested in life at age 84, Pam said “we think it’s his dogged determination to see that next vintage beauty (or bastardit’s all the same to Conard) run is what keeps him in the game”.

GETTYSBURG BATTLEFIELD
T
he battlefield is 1,020 acres of beautiful Pennsylvania rolling hills, monuments, and cannon positions. The Union troops who died here are buried in the nearby cemetery and the Confederate fallen were primarily buried in cemeteries in North and South Carolina. It is a peaceful place to visit, today. Such was not the case in June of 1863. After his victory at Chancellorsville, Confederate General Robert E. Lee marched his troops northward toward Maryland and Pennsylvania. Unknown to Lee, the Union troops of Major General Joseph Hooker were close behind. By accident, the two armies ran into each other at Gettysburg, surprising both. The Union’s soldiers outnumbered the Confederate’s estimated 85,000 to 75,000. Initially, on July 2nd, the Union army held its ground on McPherson Hill, but that afternoon they were driven back to Cemetery Hill. The Confederates dug in at Seminary Hill a mile away. Lee gained a temporary advantage after an attack on the Unions flanks, but on July 3rd, after a two hour cannon bombardment by both sides, Lee made a costly mistake. In Picket’s Charge, 12,000 Confederates crossed open ground, attacking the Union holding the higher ground. In 1 hour, Lee lost over 5,000 soldiers and the battle. In the end, over 7,000 soldiers died in a battle that wasn’t supposed to happen, and another 44,000 were wounded, captured or missing. This was the bloodiest and most pivotal battle of the Civil War. To begin your tour, I suggest that you see the movie and Cyclorama at the main visitor center, Gettysburg National Military Museum and Visitor Center. . Ignore the small visitor center on the main highway, as it only has restrooms and guides trying to get you to hire them. The charge for the movie and Cyclorama is $15 for adults, but is worth it for an overview of the battle. The movie, A New Birth of Freedom, narrated by Morgan Freeman, was sponsored by the History Channel. The Cyclorama is a 360 degree painting with landscaped foreground. It was first seen by the public in 1884 and restored in 2008. The 377 foot long, 42 foot high, 12.5 ton painting is well worth the admission. Light and sound brings the battle to life in extreme detail. To tour the battlefield, you can hire a private guide for $75, pay $35 for a bus tour, or pick up and drive a self-guided tour map at the visitor center for free. You can also visit the Gettysburg National Cemetery, site of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, and final resting place of many of the Union Soldiers and heroes from other wars. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! DODGING THE ROADKILL
I
ACCOUNTABILITY
By Hank Bonecutter
shared this image on Facebook recently and it’s been viewed from my account, 75,000 times. It obviously struck the same cord with you that it struck with me. It caused me to write this post. When I began this journey, I took it VERY seriously. Not only was it a financial decision, but it was a safety issue. I was 63 years old when I entered this lifestyle and there were questions. Could I still ride a motorcycle? Was I strong enough, were my reactions still sharp, did I have the stamina? I felt that I could answer “yes” to all of those concerns. Even though there are many factors that are completely out of my control, I knew that I wanted this, I NEEDED this and I was DEFINITELY going to do this and I KNEW it was dangerous. Death is a certainty. There’s no getting around it. I’m not consumed by it. I don’t live in fear. I’m saved. Now, trust me, I’m not ready to “check out” just yet, but I’m not consumed with it. I believe there’s a plan for my life and when the final chapter arrives, I hope it’s been a good, and I leave my mark. As I’ve said before, “If I could live forever, I would ride forever.” With all of that said, all bikers understand the risks, the dangers, the possibilities of what could happen. We just choose not be governed by fear. If we were, we would never leave the house, and the irony of THAT is, you could trip down a flight of stairs and break your neck. Having spent my career in the media business, I’ve been involved in every possible public safety campaign that you could imagine. “Don’t Drink and Drive” “Buckle Up” “Say No to Drugs” “Crack is Whack” “Don’t Text and Drive” I could go on and on. My personal opinion is that these campaigns are needed and necessary. The problem is, we don’t listen. We don’t seem to be affected by it because, “It’ll never happen to me!” When I saw this poster about paying attention and look for motorcycles, it hit me like a sucker punch. It is one of the most POWERFUL images I’ve seen about looking out for bikers. I
June 2018
stared at it for quite a while. I have children and grandkids. I can relate. We can all share stories of what NON bikers say when they learn we ride. Usually it’s a story about someone they know who’s been killed on a motorcycle. I’ve never been able to discern if that’s their way of expressing concern for me, or calling me out for being crazy. Maybe we are, but either way, I’ve made my decision and I’m sticking with it. NO FEAR! What bothers me are reactions like this: “Well Hell, you shouldn’t be out there if it’s that dangerous.” Or, “You oughta know better!” These types of reactions make me feel like it’s my fault if something happens. Kind of like an “I told you so” moment. Granted, a lot of motorcycle accidents ARE the fault of the operator. I get it. But, we have a REAL serious problem with distracted driving. The cell phone is what appears to be the greatest problem I think it’s the most dangerous thing that’s ever been put in our hands. And that INCLUDES guns. Everything we do, we’re accountable for. Whether it’s guns, planes, motorcycles, cars or our family. WE. ARE. ACCOUNTABLE! I would like to think that moving forward, people WOULD accept the fact that they are NOT paying attention when they’re on their cell phone. I don’t care what you think, YOU ARE NOT paying attention to driving! Just keep telling yourself you are. One day you’ll see, and sadly, so will a biker. But hey, it’ll never happen to me.

ON OR NEAR THE WATER DIP
1 Large Red Pepper; medium chop 1 Can of Sweet Corn; drained 1 Medium Sweet Onion; medium chop 1/2 Cup of Sliced Black Olives 1 Large Jalapeno, medium chopped (remove seeds) 1 Packet of dry Ranch Dressing Mix 2 Large Tubs of Whipped Philly Cream Cheese Just chop everything and put in in a really bright but plastic serving bowl, add the Whipped Philly, stir till well combined and serve up with Scoops or any fave chip. I always add several dashes of Sriracha hot sauce (in condiment aisle w/ other hot sauces) and I squeeze half a lime over all when done. This has the best burst of fresh flavor and a perfect dip for poolside or out on the water. So good and makes you thirsty for ice cold refreshment. *see last recipe. Oh, Yeah!
E-Zest LOBSTER TAILS
Preheat oven broiler. Lay your lobster tail flat on counter. Take a pair of kitchen serrated scissors and just cut straight down the front of tail all the way to the back of the fan-tail. Gently pull it open slightly and reach in and loosen lobster tail flesh while being sure not to pull fan-tail flesh loose. Sit the flesh right on top of where you just made the center cut and it now has the perfect position for broiling. Mix garlic powder in melted butter to taste, salt & pepper tails, then squeeze lemon or lime juice all over tails and let soak in and then brush the melted butter w/ garlic powder thoroughly over each tail. Broil no longer than 8 mins. each. Remove from broiler and brush w/ butter sauce again. Serve very hot w/ each person getting a small bowl of real butter; melted and a wedge of lemon or lime. I always do a timed 7 mins. for a medium tail as don’t like chewy at all. There’s literally 100’s of spices you can melt in your butter before brushing on and broiling. Get Creative!
SMOKEY CARIBBEAN COLESLAW
1 Medium Bag of Shredded Coleslaw Mix 1 Cup of Real Mayo 1/2 Cup of /12 & 1/2 Cream 1 Tbl. of Smoked Paprika Salt & Pepper to Taste 1/2 Cup of Sweet Relish 1 Medium Sweet Vidalia Onion; medium chop 1 Level Tbl. of Apple Cider Vinegar 1 Heaping Tbl. of Sugar Put your coleslaw mix in a bright serving bowl. Salt & Pepper cabbage mix thoroughly and add the relish and onion. In any glass jar you have add the other ingredients and shake it up, baby. When all smooth pour generously all over cabbage mix. Make sure all coated and cover w/ Press N’ Seal wrap and put in fridge until super cold. Serve with anything grilled, but great w/ lobster also. If needs more smoked paprika then add a couple dashes more. You want that smoky flavor.
BANGIN’ BLUEBERRY LEMONADE
1 Bottle of Lemon Vodka Mix up a pitcher full of Country Time Lemonade Mix 1 Small crate of Fresh Blueberries for garnish; wet them and sprinkle granulated sugar all over 1 6-Pack of Frostie (brand) Blue Cream Soda (get at larger WallyWorld) Use a glass or Lucite pitcher to show off the gorgeous color of this cocktail. Do a 1/2 lemonade, 1/2 Lemon Vodka & 1/2 Blue Cream Soda mixture. Pour over crushed ice and garnish w/ sugared blueberries. SO good! Go ahead and get 2 bottles of Lemon Vodka and tell everyone you’re just being efficient. :) SO refreshing!

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)
NCOM CONVENTION MOBILIZES BIKERS RIGHTS ACTIVISTS IN MOBILE The National Coalition of Motorcyclists was founded over three decades ago during the turbulent formation of the bikers’ rights movement to foster unity among diverse segments of the motorcycling community in order to advance a more cohesive political agenda. Unity and cooperation were the buzzwords at this year’s 33rd annual NCOM Convention in Mobile, Alabama as hundreds of representatives from Motorcyclists Rights Organizations (MROs), clubs and associations from across the country came to listen, learn and share information on a variety of issues important to today’s riders. “While not the largest attendance at an NCOM Convention, those who were there had a good time and the Convention was a success,” notes Convention Committee Chairman David “Animal” Reid, who says “Attendees at the various seminars and presentations were attentive, asked pertinent questions and left with current information on a wide range of subjects and issues.” Among the many meetings, seminars and breakout sessions conducted throughout Mother’s Day Weekend, May 10-13, 2018 at the Renaissance – Riverview Plaza Hotel, were seminars on civil rights, profiling, RICO, veterans affairs, motorcycle insurance, and featured a Mock Legislative Session presented by the NCOM Legislative Task Force. “The Mock Committee Hearing went over very well,” says NCOM-LTF Chairman Frank Ernst, adding that “Those in attendance gave our committee much positive feedback and they appreciated the information provided by the LTF,” including a new “Biker’s Guide to Making Law” free informational brochure on how to impact the legislative process. Spreading some good news finally, after more than three years in litigation, A.I.M. Attorney Bill Smith of Texas gave an update on the deadly Waco shootings and reported that most of the nearly two hundred bikers arrested and charged under RICO with murder have now had their cases dismissed, including longtime bikers rights activist Paul Landers, former NCOM-LTF Chairman who had to resign due to the miscarriage of justice that cost many innocent Freedom Fighters their jobs, homes, relationships and even children taken from them. During the Silver Spoke Awards Banquet on Saturday evening, several honorees were recognized for their contributions to “Improving The Image of Motorcycling”, including; GOVERNMENT: New Hampshire State Rep. Charlie St. Clair, Executive Director of Laconia Motorcycle Week; MEDIA: Vernon & Melanie Schwarte of Thunder Roads Magazine - Iowa; LEGAL: Michael DeKruif, AIM Attorney—California; ENTERTAINMENT: Stunt Rider Bubba Blackwell; and NCOM’s highest honor, the Ron Roloff Lifetime Achievement Award, was presented to Charlie Boone of CBA/ABATE of North Carolina, member of the NCOM Board of Directors. Next year’s 34th Annual NCOM Convention will be held May 9-12, 2019 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Orlando, Florida. For 30
TWIN PEAKS CASES UNRAVEL Three years ago on May 17, 2015, the bodies of nine dead bikers lay in the parking lot of the Twin Peaks restaurant in the infamous Waco shootout as the District Attorney had police round up and arrest everyone there to attend a Confederation of Clubs meeting. Many of the nearly two hundred bikers arrested that night would spend the next several weeks jailed on million-dollar bonds. It was a risky legal strategy, one that had never been tried on this scale: Throw a wide net around a complicated crime scene and charge everybody involved with engaging in organized criminal activity. Now, with the 3rd anniversary of the cases upon us, the failure of that audacious strategy has become clear as prosecutors dismiss most of the cases, the district attorney lost re-election by a landslide, and 130 bikers line up to sue over civil rights violations. The only case that has gone to trial ended in a hung jury and mistrial in November. “In the last three years, the 192 bikers arrested in the Twin Peaks shootout have lived under a cloud,” reports the Waco Tribune. “Some have languished in jail, lost jobs, lost vehicles or lost spouses. In some cases, ex-wives used their arrests to seek modifications in child custody or visitation orders. Most were under strict bond conditions that restricted their travel and freedom to associate with their friends.” The Twin Peaks debacle may also have ended a promising political career for D.A. Abel Reyna, who suffered an overwhelming defeat in the March primary in which his opponent accused him of corruption and prosecutorial overreach. Since the electoral loss, Reyna’s office has dismissed 124 cases en masse, and has re-indicted 24 remaining defendants on a variety of charges including riot, murder and tampering with evidence, superseding the original organized crime charges. “Meanwhile, the raft of civil lawsuits stemming from the Twin Peaks cases leaves the city and county in potential financial jeopardy,” according to the Waco newspaper, noting that the massive volume of cases had put a severe strain on court operations and on county resources already. CALIFORNIA MOTORCYCLE CLUB CLAIMS PROFILING AND POLICE HARASSMENT A video posted recently on YouTube shows members of the Jus Brothers Motorcycle Club “doing nothing wrong” when a Sonora, CA police sergeant started harassing them and photographed the license plates on their parked motorcycles. “They say police unlawfully profiled the club members as a motorcycle gang,” reported the Modesto Bee newspaper. Jus Brothers members from its Mother Lode and Stanislaus County chapters were waiting for a club event to begin at the nearby Intake Grill restaurant and sports bar, a monthly meeting geared toward sharing information about motorcycle legislation and is open to the public. “We get this kind of hassle from Sonora PD all the time,” a member told The Bee. “I think they’re just trying to keep us out of downtown. They come around taking pictures of our bikes,

were asked to modify their ratings, which they did.”
Club members in the video (www.youtube.com/ watch?v=pZN4fDjL17M) tell the sergeant that they plan on posting the video online with the department’s phone number, so callers can tell officials what they think of it: “That way America can see what it’s like to live in a police state!”
A ROAD TO ZERO MOTORCYCLES A recently released National Safety Council report entitled “A Road to Zero” is the federal government’s vision for achieving zero roadway deaths by 2050, but it fails to identify any significant procedures to reduce motorcycle fatalities except for helmet laws and hi-tech.
Another Jus Brothers member in the video asks the sergeant if police will do the same to the other vehicles parked along the street, and the sergeant seems to indicate they’re only doing this to “outlaw motorcycle gangs.”
Despite input from motorcycle organizations, the NSC relies heavily on automotive technologies such as driver assistance systems and autonomous vehicles to pave the way to a safer future, ignoring such rider safety issues as motorcycle awareness, rider training, impairment, distracted driving and proactive measures to prevent car-versus-motorcycle collisions.
The Sonora Police Department has responded to the allegations of profiling local bikers; “The police sergeant in the video was simply engaging in intelligence gathering on a public street,” according to the official police news release. In the video, the Jus Brothers members tell the police sergeant about Assembly Bill 2972, a bill to prohibit peace officers from engaging in “motorcycle profiling.” If passed, police would not be allowed to consider a person riding a motorcycle or wearing motorcycle or motorcycle club-related clothing as a factor in enforcement decisions. MOTORCYCLE CLUB RETALIATES WITH CYBER ATTACK Management at Marion Hotel in Winnipeg, Manitoba received a harsh dose of virtual reality as they suffered the wrath of the Manitoba Nomads, a chapter of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club. According to a news posting on www.rideapart.com, “It all started when members of the Nomads were refused access to the hotel for sporting their colors.” Unwilling to let the offense go unpunished, the chapter President invited his people to boycott the establishment. The members joined forces and on March 27 targeted their Facebook page by submitting a tsunami of one-star reviews. This lowered the hotel’s otherwise respectable rating of 4.5 to a mediocre 3 overnight, forcing the hotel to take down its page. “Hell hath no fury like a biker gang scorned, and the gang proceeded to do the same with the hotel restaurant’s page,” even turning to the Marion Street Eatery’s TripAdvisor page. Previously, the club expressed disagreement with what they considered discrimination against bikers by targeting Headingley Sport Ltd./Indian Motorcycle Winnipeg for forbidding colors from a riding event. “Once the shop withdrew from the event, the perpetrators June 2018
The report also endorses using insurance to price some high risk operators and vehicles off the road, opening the door to allow insurance companies to effectively achieve zero motorcycles. ZERO EMISSIONS, ZERO DEATHS, ZERO TOLERANCE Bandit and his Bikernet Crew at www.Bikernet.com posted on their blog about a California Air Resources Board meeting regarding new rule making for motorcycles. Every manufacturer of motorcycles was there, as CARB talked about embracing all aspects of the market before making their recommendations in 2020…that’s the good news. “They discussed anti-tampering, competition with the EU and Zero emissions,” writes Bandit. “They talked about moving California to zero emissions by rebates on electric bikes, and they want California riders to be riding 5 million electric bikes by 2025 by executive order from the nice California Governor.” Bandit et al go on to state their case: “Two points: One is that word Zero again. They use that word in two other regulatory segments, Zero deaths on the highways and Zero tolerance when it comes to drunk driving or drugs. Zero sounds good from one side of the coin, but the other is ultimate control or Zero Freedom. The other point I hope to make is that motorcycles represent such a small number in the emissions mix we should be left alone. One of the administrators mentioned two areas of emissions they walked away from and I hope to help make motorcycles a third or at least the aftermarket motorcycle industry.” QUOTABLE QUOTE: “A free society is a place where it’s safe to be unpopular.” ~ Adlai Stevenson (1900-1965) American lawyer, politician and diplomat

by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley
Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: I was going to write another expose’ on the communist insurgency at work in our country. However, I think you already know so I’ve decided to write about ME!! Writing about me really isn’t an exercise in narcissism. It’s more of a memoir. 1968 was the year I went to Vietnam which makes this the 50th anniversary of that notable venture into growth from boy to man and dealing with the seriousness of life and how important a sense of humor is to keeping perspective about the world around us. If you couldn’t laugh in those days you ended up as short wired as today’s liberal loonies. There were no laptops or cell phones so we actually talked to people and learned first hand!!! In June of 1968 I was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia, with a couple of hundred other young fellows who had all recently completed their individual training. We were being formed into aviation support detachments to take over army airfields in Vietnam and consolidate the control of those airfields under the 1st Aviation Brigade. We received equipment, organized it and packed it up in Conex containers for shipment by boat to Vietnam. By June most of the equipment was on it’s way and we were doing various menial jobs to keep us out of trouble until it was time for us to go. We were set to get a couple of weeks at home and fly by military aircraft to Vietnam in July. The Army certified me to drive a 5-ton tractor with a 60-foot trailer to haul the containers from the packing area to the shipping terminal at Fort Benning. I learned about maintenance checks, log books and proper washing of a big truck. In the evening it was time for laundry, drink a few beers with the buds, play cards and shoot pool. You could drink beer at 18 on base and two beer lunches were authorized. I believe I was making about $100 a month which didn’t leave much for wild spending. Playing poker was one way to take a chance on winning enough to do something special. As I remember it I won more than I lost but that could be my memory being kind in my advanced years. It was fun meeting so many different guys from around the country and learning about what they did and what their life had been like so far. I don’t remember any32
body cowering in their boots over going to war. The ones who did had peed their bed in basic training or ran away to Canada. Most of us were glad they were gone. One fella from Alabama was experienced in punch cards and sold chances for extra cash. Another fellow was Mexican from the Southeast with a really funny wit. He bought a Gerber Mark I commando knife and a barber’s strop. He sharpened it until he could lay it flat on his hand and slide into the side of an Army mattress. Another guy from Ohio used to be a gymnast and could squat down on one leg and touch his butt to his heal. We all had to try but ended up sprawled on the floor. Almost everyone had a special story or ability that was interesting. I spent a few weeks at a remote heliport with a PRC-10 FM radio controlling helicopters in and out. A lot of pilots were needed for Vietnam and there was always a helicopter flying. At night I wrote letters home and played poker. This was just a couple of months after the 1968 Tet offensive in Vietnam. Walter Cronkite and other’s in the media were telling us how bad it was and that we were losing the war. The anti-war protest movement was gaining steam. Racial tensions were high and there was general chaos across the country. Rock music was changing from bebop to acid rock and protest themes. The peace, love and drug movement was on the roll. Drag racing, formula and stock car racing was extremely dangerous. Drivers were crashing, burning and dying left and right. You could buy a WWII Harley Davidson still in packaged for shipment to war for less than $200 which sparked the hard tail chopper. With all of that going on I really don’t remember being afraid of going to Vietnam. I was 18 and pretty independent. I thought going to a war was doing my duty as an American. I grew up in the years after WWII and Korea. Going to Vietnam was just my turn. For me, life was fun and exciting. Besides, at 18 I was invincible. Weren’t you??? Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. Bulldog * My monthly column reflects my personal point of view and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Publishers of this magazine, but they, like me, acknowledge the sacrifices made for the privilege of Freedom of Speech, therefore, they gratefully let me rant. A police officer radioed the station house saying, “I have an interesting case here. An old lady shot her husband for stepping on the floor she just mopped.” Said he’s been doing this for 54 years and she just snapped. Chief says, “Well, have you arrested the woman?”. Officer comes back quick, “Not yet! The floor’s still wet.” -------------------------------------------------------------Bubba is asking Earl’s advice. “Ya’ know we all stayed out really late at the new topless bar and when I got home there on the handle of the microwave was balanced two apples with a banana in the middle sticking out and my best skinning knife stuck in the banana. What in the hell do you think is up with that?” Earl thinks a bit, tilts his head at Bubba and says, “Do you think she’s wanting you to eat more fruit?”. -------------------------------------------------------------Two guys, both around 60 years old, pulled in the same slot at Sonic as all the spots were full. The one old guy, Bert, is on a scooter and places his order and nods to Jax, who’s on his beloved Night Train, to then place his order. They’re both eating their grub and talking bikes when Bert pumps up his chest and says, “I get 80 miles per gallon, what you get?” Jax is chewing away and looks Bert right in the eyes; “I get laid.” -------------------------------------------------------------Have you ever just stood there listening to someone and you literally have to fight the urge to just start singing as loud as you can that great ole classic from The Wizard of Oz......If You Only Had A Brain? js -------------------------------------------------------------So “Boozer” gets home at 5am after being out partying all night and first thing he does is reach for his bottle of Jack Daniels in the freezer to make him a nightcap. As the freezer door is shutting he sees a note from his fiance on the door that reads: “This isn’t working. Goodbye.” Boozer opens it up again and thinks to himself, “what is wrong with that woman, the door works just fine.” js -------------------------------------------------------------Guys, when a woman is really super mad, just tell her she’s overreacting and she’ll look at you, realize your absolutely right and calm the puck down immediately. Lmao.....call me from the hospital. We need to discuss your lack of basic intuition but also I have a 1972 shovel w/ only 50 miles on it for sale. js 34
A nun walks into the Mother Superior’s office and plunks down into a chair. She lets out a sigh, heavy with frustration. “What troubles you, Sister?” asked Mother Superior. “I thought this was the day you spent with your family.” “It was,” sighed the Sister. “And I went to play golf with my brother. We try to play golf as often as we can. You know I was quite a talented golfer before I devoted my life to the Church.” “I seem to recall that,” Mother Superior agreed. “So I take it your day of recreation was not relaxing?” “Far from it,” snorted the Sister. “In fact, I used profane language today.” “Goodness, Sister!” gasped Mother Superior. “You must tell me all about it!” “Well, we were on the 5th tee — and this hole is a monster, Mother — 540 yard par 5, with a nasty dogleg right and a hidden green … and I hit the drive of my life. The sweetest swing I’ve ever made. And it’s flying straight and true, right along the line I wanted … and it hits a bird in mid-flight!” “Oh my.” commiserated Mother Superior. “How unfortunate. But surely that didn’t make you blaspheme, Sister.” “No, that wasn’t it,” admitted the Sister. “While I was still trying to fathom what had happened, this squirrel runs out of the woods, grabs my ball and runs off down the fairway.” “Oh, that would have made me blaspheme.” sympathized Mother Superior. “But I didn’t, Mother!” sobbed the Sister. “And I was so proud of myself! And while I was pondering whether this was a sign from above, this hawk swoops out of the sky and grabs the squirrel and flies off, with my ball still clutched in his paws.” “So that’s when you cursed,” said Mother Superior with an all-knowing smile. “Nope, that wasn’t it either,” cried the Sister, anguished, “because as the hawk started to fly out of sight, the squirrel started struggling, and the hawk dropped him right there on the green, and the ball popped out of his paws and rolled to about 18 inches from the cup.” Mother Superior sat back in her chair, folded her arms across her chest, fixed the Sister with a baleful stare and deadpanned… “You missed the f*#^ing putt, didn’t you?” --------------------------------------------------------------A bitter husband says to his wife; “On your gravestone, I’ll put the words: Cold As Ever.” The wife replies, “Fine by me. On yours’, I’ll just simply put: Stiff At Last.”
