PRING IS IN FULL SWING and around the country, motorcyclists are returning to the road. But with a sudden spike in the number of motorcycles on the road, it’s a good time to remind all motorists, whether on two wheels or four, to keep a special lookout for motorcyclists. That’s why May is recognized as National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, a time for drivers to be reminded to share the road with motorcycles, and riders to be reminded to make themselves more visible to others. It’s important for motorcyclists to take an active role in their safety. Please keep these suggestions in mind when you’re on the road: Be visible. Dress for safety. Think safety while riding. Know your bike. May is looking to be a busy and fun month for us with all the events coming up! Take a look at the events page and find some fun events to attend. We will be set up at a few of them starting with the Buffalo Valley Amateur Hillclimb on the 6th, then on the 19th we kick off our 1st Rolling Bike Night at the Bent Wrench Roadhouse, we hope you’ll come out and enjoy the night with us. Memorial Day weekend we are heading to Sevierville to ride in the Smoky Mountain Thunder Memorial Ride on the 28th to pay tribute to all Fallen Military. Then we’ll come home for a couple of days to get the June issue out to you guys before we head back to East TN for the Great Smoky Mountain HOG Rally. We will also be dropping in at a lot of other events throughout the month so I’m sure we’ll run into you somewhere.

With all that’s going on this month we are somehow squeezing in a short trip to Canada to see our precious grandbaby, Malcolm. We last saw him at the end of February and in 3 short months he has grown and changed so much. He is 8 months old now and is crawling, cutting teeth, jabbering nonstop and so much more active than he was 3 months ago. We can’t wait to spend a few days with him and his Mom and Dad are looking forward to our trip too so they can celebrate their 5 year anniversary while we are there! We have a new column that we are really excited about written by Hank Bonecutter. Hank discovered the motorcycle late in life. After a struggle with depression, he began riding. The motorcycle saved his life. The new column, Dodging the Roadkill is about his journey and the people he meets and the places he visits. We hope you enjoy reading his monthly column! Follow Hank on Facebook at Dodging the Roadkill to keep up with his continuing journey. I can’t believe that it’s been 6 months since our beloved Taz, aka Thunder Dawg passed away. I miss that little guy every day and wish he was still here with us. He gave us 15 years of the greatest friendship and companionship. To love a dog is to truly know the meaning of unconditional love. Speaking of unconditional love, this month we will be celebrating Mother’s Day. For those of us who are fortunate enough to still have our mom around, we must honor and respect her by making attempts to give her our time, and our efforts as much as we possibly can. We are so busy with our daily lives, we often forget not only are we getting older, but so is she. Be helpful, and make yourself as useful as possible to her and do something extra special for your mom on Mother’s Day. Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful Mom’s out there… Wishing you all the love and happiness you so richly deserve! Ride Hard Live Free, Denise & Scott

“LOST AND FOUND” Luke 2:41-52 we read where the earthly family of Jesus travel to Jerusalem every year for the Feast of the Passover, there were festivities, ceremonies, and customs. This was what we might call a “family vacation” with all the relatives of Mary & Joseph, along with their friends and their relatives as well. They all went every year without incident, but this time Jesus had turned twelve years old. “After the days had been fulfilled, they all started the journey home, but “Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem, and His mother knew not of it. But they supposing Him to have been in the company, they went a day’s journey; they sought Him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.” Here’s the big question; HOW DO YOU LOSE YOUR CHILD FOR A WHOLE DAY? I can be in Florida in a day. When my family goes on vacation, we might leave a toothbrush behind, but never our child. I have heard of parents forgetting their child in the back seat of a hot car or forgetting to pick them up after school, but to travel a whole day and then realize your child is gone! Joseph and Mary were good responsible parents, after all God had entrusted them to raise the Messiah! This tells me, we all can miss it from time to time. But they lost Jesus at the feast! 1. Mary and Joesph lost Him 2. The Jewish nation has lost Him 3. The modern day Church has lost Jesus at the feast. When it comes to the holidays, we got the feast down pat and we are more concerned with coloring the eggs, hiding the eggs, cooking the Easter dinner. Our focus is on a bunny rabbit more than the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. At Christmas we are more concerned at the gifts under a tree, Santa Clause, Rudolf and Frosty the snowman. We have forgotten the birth of Christ is the reason for the season. Give yourself and your children an honest test, and ask the question: “what does Easter and Christmas mean to you? You May 2018
might be shocked at the answers! Today, we don’t want to offend anyone so we have stopped saying “Merry Christmas” and say “Happy holidays.” We have stopped playing the old Christmas carols, Hark the Herold Angels sing, or Oh Holy Night. Now it’s a Rock & Roll Christmas with you. It’s no longer Christmas, its X-mas. Have you lost Jesus at the feast? When you suppose Jesus to be where you last left him, you’ve lost Him. If anybody ought to be the caretaker of twelve year old Jesus, it should be the parents. If anybody ought to be the caretaker of Jesus today, it should be the Church! “They turned back again seeking Him…after three days they found Him in the temple” It took one day to lose Him and three days to find Him. Jesus was right where they left Him…… in the Church. Jesus is right where you left Him…… He’s still in the Church. Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

Bickard 1 Year Old Male – This wiggly puppy is full of joy and kisses, and once he’s had a good romp, he loves to cuddle. A good buttscratch will send him into his happy-dance! Just beginning to focus enough to take direction, he’s very proud of his new skills -- in addition to “sit,” he’s learning to fetch (to burn some energy), and will even “give” for a treat. He really seems to enjoy being able to interact through this game. He walks well on leash, gets along with other dogs, and isn’t jumpy, though sometimes a bit over-excited. He loves running the ramp and the hoop. Freeman 6 Year Old Male – I was brought to McKamey from a not so great situation. I love soft treats and cuddling. My favorite thing is going for walks but many things scare me. I need a loving family or person to teach me that not everything is bad. Gnocchi 1 Year Old Female – Very gentle, polite young lady. ALWAYS happy to see you in the morning! She adores stretching and rolling on the grass. Her ideal home would be a happy, outdoorsy, active family that would be willing to include her in all their exploits. She knows she is beautiful, she wants to flaunt it! Ollie 2 Year Old Male – I’m very trainable and food motivated. At the end of the day I just want some loving! I have a lot of energy to spend, so I will need a big back yard or someone to take me on regular walks. I like to ride in the car, especially when I can put my head out the window to feel the cool breeze!
Staple 2 Year Old Female – I’ve never had any toys before, so I just stand there looking when you throw a ball. But I do enjoy sniffing around the yard, and will occasionally pick up a stick. Sometimes new situations make me cringe, but my default is LOVE, so I wiggle all over and clamor to be petted. I love to run with you or run to you when you call, but then I get over-excited and jump on you, not realizing how big and strong I am. I’ve already learned how to do all the agility equipment here at McKamey! Wesson 1 Year Old Male – Hi! I’m Wesson! I’m a very playful little guy that loves attention! I’m still young so I need someone that’s willing to teach me manners when I get excited! I get along great with other dogs too, so if you have a friend for me at home I’m sure we’ll get along great! I’m very good and calm on car rides. I’m a little goofy on walks cause I get super distracted so I’m a little all over the place. I like to meet new people and jump up to give hugs to complete strangers. One time on a walk, I saw a guy with a guitar and I didn’t know what to think so I tried to talk back to it! Yin 2 Year Old Male – Yin loves the outdoors, exploring all the delightful nature scents, which makes for a very relaxing pace for walks with him. Yin is the kind of calm dog who likes his space and will give you yours. But every now and then he gets a gleam in his eye and wants to play! This quiet, self-possessed, curious dog would be a great choice for someone who wants an easygoing, gentle-paced walking partner and an undemanding companion to hang out with. The adoption fee includes: Spay or neuter, Age appropriate vaccinations, Medical examination, Behavior assessment, Microchip (ID for a lifetime), Flea preventative, De-worming, FeLV test (cats), Heartworm test (dogs), Heartworm Preventative for first month (dogs), 30 days of free pet insurance coverage (includes all animals between 8 weeks-11 years old)
MCKAMEY ANIMAL CENTER Springen 1 Year Old Male – I’m really playful and love being pet almost as much as I love my squeaky toys!

RIDER SAFETY
MSF BASIC RIDERCOURSE, IT’S FOR EVERYONE!
T
starting, shifting, making turns, swerving and braking. As class progresses, students proceed to emergency braking, negotiating turns, emergency stops and lane changes. To graduate from the course, each student must complete all of the exercises; pass the written test and the skills test.
here is a misconception that the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic RiderCourse (MSF BRC) is specifically for people that have never ridden a motorcycle. Although this is true, the BRC is so much more than that. It is also for riders of all skill levels.
Since being a Rider Coach, I have encountered students ages 16 to 78. Some with absolutely no riding experience, many who have always been a passenger and others who have been riding nearly half a century. Regardless of the age or the reason, the BRC is designed to help all of these students learn motorcycle safety and graduate from the course. There will be students that do not pass the first time and others will realize that riding a motorcycle may not be for him or her and this is perfectly fine. It is far better to come to this realization on a controlled course with a certified coach close by than on the street filled with traffic. What do you learn at the Basic RiderCourse? The course is offered with a classroom element and a hands-on range element. The range is a controlled environment where the student will be on the motorcycle. In the classroom, students will learn about different types of motorcycles, operation of the controls, how to become a safe and responsible rider and how to identify and minimize risk. On the range, students begin by learning friction control (smooth operation of the clutch), skills like stopping and
AREP graduates
For seasoned motorcycle riders, this may sound like the proverbial “walk in the park”. But, to quote one of those seasoned riders after the completion of the course, “I’ve been riding for years, this course challenged me and I learned a lot!” Students will find they use muscles they may not have exercised in a while and the mental fatigue experienced during the course is surprising to them. As a coach, I particularly enjoy watching confidence build with the students. Often, the timid students bloom into those with huge smiles on their faces. Students will learn the basics of riding a motorcycle in the BRC course. But, there are more benefits. Each graduate receives a certificate to present to the DMV and in return has the ”M” (motorcycle) endorsement added to his or her license. Sometimes, an eye test will be administered by the DMV. They also receive a MSF card that assists in receiving a discount from their motorcycle insurance company. What I hear most often, stated by a graduate of the BRC: “The course made me a better driver in my car.” And, from a rider who self-taught himself: “This course taught me things I didn’t know - things that I should know.” As coaches, we see students proudly come back to visit us after graduating, riding their own motorcycles and sharing their own stories that can only be made riding on 2 wheels. Where can you find a Basic RiderCourse? Check with your local Harley-Davidson dealership to see if the HarleyDavidson Riding Academy is offered at their location. You can also visit the MSF website at https://www.msf-usa.org, put in your zip code, and the MSF sites closest to you will be displayed providing location and registration information. You don’t have to be a H-D enthusiast to attend BRC at H-D Riding Academy. Whatever motorcycle brand you love, you are welcome at any BRC location. In East Tennessee, where this coach resides, Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson in Maryville and Appalachian Rider Education Program in Kingsport offer the MSF Basic RiderCourse. Be aware that many states will not accept certifications from other states. If you live in Tennessee, take the BRC at a Tennessee location. What else can the MSF BRC be? It can be fun!

OPINION: TAKING ADVANTAGE OF A TRAGEDY Happy Spring, fellow bikers! I am so pleased that spring has finally sprung! It seemed to take forever, but we can now ride without donning five layers of gear. In fact, this past Friday, we were able to ride without any jacket whatsoever. I even ended up getting a bit too much sun – which has been a precious commodity over the past several weeks. Speaking of the past several weeks, the events which unfolded on February 14 are still being talked about on the 24-hour cable news networks. As I am sure you have heard, on St. Valentine’s Day, a deranged young psychopath walked into Parkland High School, in south Florida, and killed nearly 20 children and teachers. To me, it seems that every couple of months we have another tragedy which the mainstream media (MSM), and liberal legislators, never fail to use as a reason to try to trample on our Second Amendment rights. While the senseless loss of life is abhorrent, and greatly saddens me, I am nearly as disgusted with the aftermath. For the past several weeks, the MSM have used the children of Parkland High School as puppets to promote their gun grabbing agenda. Legislators and activists appeared on television saying, “Just do something.” And while I believe the MSM does truly care that innocent people were killed, they almost seem to rejoice in having the tragedy to promote how terrible AR-15 rifles are. They never blame the shooter, who will remain nameless in this article, but instead they blame the scary black machine-of-war AR-15 – like it can jump to life on its own and start firing automatically into a crowd of people. Give me a break. When you listen to what is being said by the talking heads on cable, you quickly realize they know nothing about firearms. This shooting is terrible on so many levels: #1: The timing is terrible. The National Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act had recently passed in the U.S. House of Representatives and was due to be brought to the U.S. Senate for vote. Because of Parkland, this will not happen anytime in the near future. #2: State legislators are pushing “common sense” gun reform laws across the country. Immediately in the aftermath of Parkland, Florida passed a law which will allow trained teachers and administrators to conceal carry in the classroom. This is good in my opinion. However, there are a myriad of restrictions which were included in the same bill. This is not good. The legislation was promptly signed by governor Rick Scott, who has always been a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. Talk about a knee jerk reaction! California enacted legislation requiring background checks when purchasing ammunition – which includes limits on how many rounds they can buy. This will significantly raise the cost of ammunition for residents of California who will also be committing a crime if they buy ammunition across state lines.
May 2018
Vermont, one of the most gun friendly states in the country, enacted sweeping gun restrictions, with the Republican governor being heckled by the crowd gathered on the steps of the capitol. These new laws allow for removing guns from people authorities believe may be dangerous to themselves, or others. While demented people should not have guns, the law does not provide due process before the person’s firearms are confiscated. Additional restrictions in the bill expand background checks, places limits on magazine capacities and ban bump stocks. Deerfield, Illinois enacted local legislation to ban “assault rifles” and high capacity magazines within their city limits. No provision is included for grandfathering owners of these firearms. The law takes effect on June 13, at which time the owner will be fined from $250 to $1,000 per day until they either remove the guns from the municipality, move or turn them in to authorities. And while Illinois has preeminence with regards to firearms laws, it is doubtful this historically liberal state will sue Deerfield over the new law. #3: The gun grabbers are no longer saying they don’t want to take your guns. In the aftermath of Parkland, the usual suspects, such as Everytown For Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action, are getting more brazen in their demands. Both organizations have supported March for Our Lives, paying to bring in paid protesters and children. Moms Demand Action claims there have been nearly 300 school shootings in America since 2013. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (WTF!!) Where do these numbers come from? Anyone with any amount of sense knows better than this. Even the notoriously liberal USA Today has come out against the numbers Moms Demand Action espouse. This is pure bullshit designed to scare people and garner more support. And lastly, in late March, retired U.S. Supreme Court associate justice John Paul Stevens came out and suggested it was high time to repeal the Second Amendment altogether, claiming the amendment was a relic of the 18th Century and could be easily repealed. Fortunately, for Second Amendment supporters, it is not easy to repeal a constitutional amendment. The time for action is now. Make sure you are voting for candidates who support the second amendment. They must be strict constitutionalists. Join the National Rifle Association, Gun Owners of America and the Second Amendment Foundation. The NRA and GOA lobby on your behalf. SAF sues state and local governments when they enact laws that violate your constitutional rights. Until next month, ride often and keep the shiny side up! Molon Labe, Mike Noirot

UST OUTSIDE of Charlotte NC, the Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport (formally Tinker Air Force Base) is the home of the annual Warbirds Over Monroe Air Show. Taking place over the second weekend in November, it is one of the largest air shows in the U.S. Visitors can get up-close and personal with some of the world famous aircraft and watch them actually fly. Included in the show are Tinker Bell, the world’s only flying C-46 and Whisky 7, a C47 that participated in D-Day and liberated a French village. The finale of the show is Tora, Tora, Tora, a reenactment of the attack on Pearl Harbor with 6 Japanese Zeros performing fiery low level bombing raids. One of the most entertaining moments is brought by The Alabama Boys comedy show featuring a “drunk student pilot” who takes off without his instructor and performs some extremely difficult maneuvers, ending with his landing on a platform attached to a moving pickup truck. This 1940’s vintage D-3 Piper Cub put on quite a show. A Pitts Biplane, with a small 360 cu in engine, performed such aerobatic maneuvers as whip stalls, ½ Cuban 8’s, outside loops and hammerhead turns. Also, a Greg Koontz Airshows high wing flew Lumpty Lumps, rolls, inside/outside loops and even flew sideways to salute the veterans. Other unusual aircraft included: “Wooden Wonder”, an all wood British Mosquito; an L-29 Albatross, a short range jet; P-51’s, T-6 Trainers; Huey Cobras, a Russian Yak, and a P-40 Flying Tiger. Many other aircraft were available to the public. Some even sold tickets for rides. While in the area, for the show, it is a great opportunity to visit the NASCAR Museum in Charlotte and the Charlotte Air Museum (located at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Airport). In addition to the other aircraft, the museum has the “Miracle on the Hudson” US Airways Flight 1549 aircraft, as recovered, after Captain “Sully” Sullenberger made his famous landing in the Hudson River. Charlotte is an interesting town and, what the heck, it’s a nice ride over! Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper!!

DODGING THE ROADKILL
IT’S A JOURNEY NOT A DESTINATION Y By: Hank Bonecutter
OU SEE THIS “meme” all over social media. “Being a biker is a journey, NOT a destination.” Or, “It’s about the ride, not the destination.”
Have you ever wondered just WHAT this journey is? Does it matter? In my short time as a biker, I’ve discovered that this one theme is the common thread that connects us. To me, it speaks volumes about how we don’t ever want the “journey” to end. We want to ride forever. We don’t want there to be a “destination” because that implies that the journey is over. Too deep? One of the beautiful things about the people I meet on MY journey, is that they each have their own reasons for being connected to this world through their motorcycle. Their bike is a sculpture of their personality. It represents many aspects of their life in many ways. From the type of bike they ride, to the accessories, the pipes, the motor, the color. It all represents something unique to that person, and in life, I think there are few things that we hold exclusive to ourselves. Each brother and sister I meet has a different story, and their willingness to share that story with me connects us. It’s the bike! From bad relationships to addiction. From military service to business success. Whatever the story, bikers connect each other with their life THROUGH this motorcycle. That’s why I always say, “I love the people I meet on this bike.” Because I do. I would have NEVER met the people I meet had it not been for this motorcycle. I don’t care what you ride, or for how long. If I had just kept rolling along, waiting to die, what would I have experienced? I just LOVE this connection that exists between us. It’s the bike! For me, I’m not running from anything. I have nothing to hide. I speak to groups all the time about battling depression and how I fought my way through it. It’s the bike! I meet people online who thank me for speaking out about it. There’s a lot of pain in this world, but through this magical machine, the motorcycle, everything becomes good and right in the world. Even if it’s just for a few hours. Families are failing, children are growing up with one parent and being bullied in school. Work is more stressful. The news is always bad. There’s NEVER enough money, but for a few magical hours, on the back of your machine, the world is ok. Your life is good. Your problems don’t overwhelm you. I inadvertently fell into this lifestyle. It TRULY was quite by accident. But, I believe that God has a plan for all of us. Our purpose is defined by our ability to connect with his will in our life, and become fulfilled. For me, it happened late in life, but I couldn’t be more grateful. So I just straddle my beast and press one down and five up and wherever I go and whomever I meet, I count it as a blessing and you are ALL part of MY journey. The destination has already been decided! May 2018
About Hank Hank Bonecutter retired from a fortyyear broadcasting career in 2012. By the time he retired, he had seen it all, and been a willing participant. Rock stars, record companies, groupies, drugs, late nights and near death experiences, came to an end when his first child was born. It was then he realized that there were more important things in life besides him. 18 years as a station owner and talk show host provided financial stability and supported his family. After retirement, the kids were grown and gone, there was no business to run, nor a time sheet to fill out. Depression overcame him, leaving Hank wondering what was missing from his life. Family and friends didn’t have a clue he was depressed. Healthy, financially stable and with so much to live for and be excited about, there were days he simply couldn’t get out of bed. What was happening? Why did he feel so bad? There was NO explanation. A chance meeting with a friend at the local Harley Davidson dealership introduced him to motorcycles. Hank discovered that not only did this friend own a motorcycle, but many of Hank’s friends were seasoned bikers, as well. Now curious about what he had been missing all these years, Hank began to research. It had been over thirty years since he was on a motorcycle: Could he still ride one? Could he afford one? Was he too old? After graduating from the Harley-Davidson Riding Academy, it was obvious that: he could, he could, and he wasn’t! Hank bought a 2016 Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special and suddenly he had a new passion–the open road. It has been a lifechanging experience. He logged over 31,000 miles during his first year of ownership, traveling the country and blogging about the people and places he meets. For the first time in his life he had passion. There was a purpose in his life. There were places to go and people to see, but more importantly, there was a message. In 2017, he traded his Street Glide for the new Ultra Limited, and was now set to do some serious traveling. As a writer, Hank now combines his passion for riding and telling the stories of the people he meets along the way. “Dodging the Roadkill” is Hank’s journey.

Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: When I began writing for Thunder Roads I focused on veteran issues related to the war in Iraq/Afghanistan and motorcycle related topics. My world has changed. I am an American warrior committed to the United States Constitution as written and preserving liberty and freedom. It’s sad but we are under open attack by well-funded and entrenched anti-American movements. These movements are more out in the open today but they started a long time ago by masters of secrecy with much foreign funding and are energized by many celebrities. Our history has always contained the struggle of oppression versus freedom and it’s been quite the roller coaster. We threw off the yoke of oppression by the King of England and birthed the nation. We repelled attack by England, France and Spain. Gaining freedom meant battles in Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and the Atlantic. The results of these confrontations have generally been agreements mutually beneficial both economically and militarily. The mutual agreements led to our involvement is wars involving Southeast Asia, China, the Philippines, Russia, the Middle East and Africa to insure freedom. The fact our constitutional freedoms for individuals, capitalist system and freedom of religion have made us a world super power has also made us the target of countries based in dictatorship, communism, socialism and crime. Almost all of these countries have a disarmed dominated population. After World War II the Russians began funneling money to reporters and Hollywood with the goal of influencing American opinion to be more open to socialism and communism. Over the years this effort has been adopted by many countries and entities that benefit from diminishing the United States as a world leader. Over the years our political system has been coopted and moved away from our constitution as written. Crime cartels have influenced our politicians to leave our borders open to intrusion. Our manufacturing has been run out of the country by paid political influence. Many of our politicians are willing to make any deal and sell out our nation as long as it benefits them personally or gives them more May 2018
power. Today we have a well-funded media and entertainment war on a duly elected President with the goal of keeping communist and socialist ideals at work in our government. Some states have even gone to the point of defying federal law to use illegal alien population as a basis for political seats, federal funding and illegal voters paid in the form of services and benefits funded with American tax dollars. Our public schools have become indoctrination centers that are re-writing true American history in the name of political correctness and are complicit in molding young minds to become disarmed and compliant to government domination as adults. Political correctness in itself is becoming social law that undermines the 1st Amendment of the constitution. Laws are already on the books to put people in jail for openly speaking truth. Our founding fathers would be appalled. Millions of dollars are being funneled into our country through lobbyists from every entity that might benefit from destroying our system and constitution. Open borders are all about open transport of drugs, terrorists and criminals into our country with the media coverage making it look like its all about hungry oppressed peasants. Hollywood promotes anti-religion messages, works to desensitize the public to violence, broken families, drug addiction and targets anyone who would attempt to stop the slide towards a third-class communist society. Our universities are in harmony with all of this and have gotten government to provide the funding to instill communist and socialist ideals in a majority of young adults. I believe a very large number of Americans sense this is happening but have been neutered by years of emersion in the liberal message of political correctness. American’s must start thinking again and find the courage to speak truth or it’s just a matter of time until we are a subjugated mass of sheep. Question of the month: Why is George Soros not designated as an enemy of the United States and an international terrorist?? Think about it!!! Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those who can’t. CONGRESSIONAL ETHANOL BILL WOULD LIMIT E-15 FUEL A measure to limit proliferation of E-15 fuel (gasoline containing 15% ethanol) has been introduced in the U.S. Congress. The "Growing Renewable Energy through Existing and New Environmentally Responsible Fuels Act" has been introduced in the U.S. House (H.R. 5212) by U.S. Rep. Peter Welch (D-VT) and in the Senate (S. 2519) by Senator Tom Udall (D-NM). This proposed legislation intends to cap mandated ethanol content in the nation's fuel supply at 9.7% and would stop the federal government from forcing E15 fuel into the market. Capping the ethanol mandate would ensure continued availability of fuels deemed safe for motorcycles, such as E-10, since E-15 fuel is not approved for use in motorcycles and can damage fuel systems and void manufacturers' warranties. HARLEY GETS REPRIEVE AS EUROPE EXEMPTED FROM TRUMP TARIFFS Harley-Davidson is breathing a sigh of relief at news that the European Union will be temporarily exempted from America's new tariffs on imported steel and aluminum. European ministers had specifically named the Motor Company, along with Levi's jeans and Jack Daniels whiskey, as a target for punitive European import duties in retaliation against President Trump's announced 25% tariff on imported steel and 10% tariff on foreign aluminum. At least for now, the EU, along with Argentina, Brazil, Australia and South Korea, has been temporarily exempted from the U.S. tariffs, giving those countries time to try to negotiate permanent exemptions. For other countries including Russia and Japan, the tariffs are set to go into effect. Despite the exemptions, prices may still be driven up by the additional costs that Harley, and other American manufacturers, will encounter due to the new American import tariffs. APPEALS COURT STRIKES DOWN GAG ORDER IN WACO CASE A Texas appeals court has struck down a gag order issued in a case arising from the 2015 shootout involving motorcycle clubs and police outside a Waco restaurant that left nine bikers dead and dozens more injured. In a six-page opinion issued Wednesday, March 21, a three-judge panel of the 10th Texas Court of Appeals ruled that the McLennan County District Attorney's Office had failed to make a case for the order. State District Judge Doug Shaver of Houston had issued the order at District Attorney Abel Reyna's request in the case of Matthew Clendennen, one of 154 motorcyclists indicted after the shootout. The order prevented prosecutors, attorneys and investigators from commenting publicly on the case. Clendennen's attorney appealed, supported by media groups that included The Associated Press, arguing the order was overly broad and unconstitutional. 30
DEADWOOD CASINOS TO IMPLEMENT 'NO COLORS' DURING STURGIS RALLY Following a February 16 request from law enforcement for the South Dakota Commission on Gaming to ban colors in casinos during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the commission put the onus on the city of Deadwood and the individual gaming properties in coming up with a solution, tasking them with “taking the lead” to implement policies to monitor potential increased bike gang presence during Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Deadwood Gaming Association (DGA) Executive Director Mike Rodman briefed the commission on the industry’s response plan at the April 3 gaming commission meeting in Deadwood. “We believe that the best path forward to keep Deadwood safe is for each individual property to have their security and management teams work with the city of Deadwood and its safety officials on proper safety planning that takes their unique properties into consideration. We do not believe there is a ‘one solution fits all’ approach that would be effective overall,” said Rodman in a letter to South Dakota Commission on Gaming Executive Director Larry Eliason. The letter was drafted in response to correspondence from Eliason requesting proposals from the city and the industry as to how they would proceed to comply with the commission’s directive. The commission asked for a list of DGA member casinos that will and won’t allow colors during the Rally. OREGON GOVERNOR KATE BROWN SIGNS DRIVER ACCOUNTABILITY LAW Oregon Governor Kate Brown formally signed House Bill 2598, the Driver Accountability bill, into law on February 28, 2018, providing some relief for riders who are victims of reckless drivers. “HB 2598 makes it a crime for a driver who recklessly injures a motorcyclist,” explains the Oregon Confederation of Clubs website, www.oregoncoc.com. “This law also covers the passenger on a motorcycle. If convicted, the reckless driver can be charged with vehicular assault and will have a Class A Misdemeanor on their record. The punishment can be doing time up to one year in prison with a maximum fine up to $6,250.” Great thanks to Oregon Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (AIM) attorney Christopher Slater, “who took a brilliantly simple idea and seeing that concept to its very end and conclusion.” This will be a powerful tool to punish those who violate a biker’s right of way or otherwise injures a rider due to a driver’s recklessness. “Too often drivers have crashed into a motorcyclist getting away without even a ticket. With this law, there will finally be some teeth in ensuring that reckless drivers who injure riders or their passengers will be convicted of a crime,” wrote Mike of the Oregon COC on their website. Much thanks to BikePac and ABATE of Oregon for their skillful efforts of organizing the hearing testimony, and great appreciation for the riders that testified. SIKHS IN ALBERTA EXEMPTED FROM HELMET LAW Turban-wearing Sikhs in Alberta, Canada will be allowed to ride motorcycles without a helmet starting April 12, joining the Provinces of Manitoba and British Columbia in granting the exemption. For decades, the Sikh community in North America has been fighting to pass a legal exemption that would allow members of the religion to legally ride a motorcycle while wearing a turban, and not a helmet. The exemption to the vehicle equipment regulation in the Traffic Safety Act was amended by an order from Transportation Minister Brian Mason, the provincial government announced March 29th. Mason told CBC News that the province's Sikh community has requested the exemption for the past 30 years, which applies to drivers and passengers over the age of 18 who are practicing members of the Sikh religion. Mason said the exemption was granted at the request of the Sikh community as recognition of their civil and religious rights. The Sikh Motorcycle Club of Edmonton says the law change is a "milestone and memorable day" in Alberta history, adding "This change will bring some new opportunities/businesses to bike repair shops/aftermarket accessories shops and Motorcycle Dealerships etc." Back in 2014 this issue came up in Ontario, Canada where lawmakers, after careful and calculated consideration, denied the request to allow the exemption.

THREE-WHEEL 'AUTOCYCLES' DON'T REQUIRE MOTORCYCLE LICENSE More and more states are adjusting their regulations towards three-wheelers that aren’t quite cars and aren’t quite motorcycles; like the Polaris Slingshot. The latest state to do so is Mississippi, where all you need to drive a Slingshot is a regular driver’s license with no motorcycle endorsement necessary. The new vehicle classification means residents of the Magnolia State can now legally drive “autocycles” sans motorcycle endorsement, thanks to three-wheelers that have traditionally been classified as motorcycles being re-designated as "autocycles." This makes Mississippi the 43rd U.S. state where driving an autocycle only necessitates a class C license, but you do need to follow the state’s motorcycle helmet laws if you want to drive a Slingshot. APPEALS COURT SIDES WITH COPS USING BIKER PHOTOS TO LOBBY Fighting a bill that would have allowed Floridians to openly carry guns, two Orange County sheriff’s deputies in 2011 moved forward with a plan to give lawmakers a glimpse of some people who might be able to pack heat publicly; such as outlaw bikers. The deputies pulled together booking or driver’s license photos of “one percenters” -- members of outlaw motorcycle clubs -- who might be able to openly carry guns, and provided the photos to the Senate Judiciary Committee in opposition to the measure. In the end, lawmakers did not approve a broad open-carry proposal for people with concealed-weapons licenses, but their use of the photos led to a lawsuit that resulted in a federal appeals court rejecting arguments by three members of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club that the officers had violated a privacy law in using the photos without their knowledge or permission. The civil case focused heavily on whether the officers violated a federal law known as the Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, but the ruling by a three-judge panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided with the officers, upholding a lower-court ruling that an exception to the federal privacy law covered lobbying, and additionally that the officers were entitled to "qualified immunity". 2018 Hawgs N Hillbillies
Crawfish Boil By Bob “Bulldog” Ousley
On a day in the wet and cool spring of 2018 the sky parted, the sunshine came in, the temperature climbed to a very comfortable level and the crawfish started coming out of the pot. What a great day. Hawgs N Hillbillies is not your standard concrete block bar with a brick front and huge sign at the street. It’s in an old clapboard covered building with a covered wood front porch and an old Harley on a pole to tell you it’s a biker friendly place. They have a couple of out buildings. One of those looks like it used to be a small gas stop and has an extended roof. This is where the magic happened. The boil celebrated the 6th anniversary of new ownership by Randy and Denise Leger. It’s an annual event and gets a little bigger and better every year. This year was fantastic. The crawfish were big, seasoned to perfection and served with an ear of corn and a boiled potato. If you were lucky you also got a boiled garlic clove. The beer flowed just right, the company was friendly, talkative and very fun. The motorcycles were magnificent and if it was up to me I would have given a prize to “Frank” for his got everything on it Rat Bike. You had to be there to really appreciate its unique qualities. If you couldn’t get there this year you might just put it on your bucket list and calendar for next year.

Bubba walked into his local watering hole with a purple and black shiner and Earl, his best friend asked, “what have you got into now?” and Bubba replied, “all I know is I was in an elevator. This woman steps in with triple D’s and I couldn’t help from staring at them of course, and then she said, “Would you please press one?” and so I did”. “I don’t remember much after that.” -------------------------------------------------------------The bad news is I accidentally took the wrong medication today. The good news is I’m now protected from heartworms and fleas for the next three months. -------------------------------------------------------------Walter took his wife Ethel to the State Fair every year, and every time he would say to her, “Ethel, you know that I’d love to go for a ride in that helicopter.” But Ethel would always reply, “I know that Walter, but that helicopter ride is 50 dollars and 50 dollars is 50 dollars.” Finally, they went to the Fair, and Walter said to Ethel, “Ethel, you know I’m 87 years old now. If I don’t ride that helicopter this year, I may never get another chance.” Once again Ethel replied, “Walter, you know that helicopter is 50 dollars and 50 dollars is 50 dollars.” This time the helicopter pilot overheard the couple’s conversation and said, “Listen folks, I’ll make a deal with you. I’ll take both of you for a ride; if you can both stay quiet for the entire ride and not say a word I won’t charge you! But if you say just one word, it’s 50 dollars.” Walter and Ethel agreed and up they went in the helicopter. The pilot performed all kinds of fancy moves and tricks, but not a word was said by either Walter or Ethel. The pilot did his death-defying tricks over and over again, but still there wasn’t so much as one word said. When they finally landed, the pilot yelled back to Walter and said, “Wow! I’ve got to hand it to you. I did everything I could to get you to scream or shout out, but you didn’t. I’m really impressed!” Walter replied, “Well to be honest I almost said something when Ethel fell out, but you know, 50 dollars is 50 dollars!” -------------------------------------------------------------Earl and Bubba are sitting in their same favorite watering hole and Bubba asks “If you’re going to make a parachute jump how high you reckon you should be?” Earl lazily replies, “I’d say about 3 days of steady drinking should bout’ do it”. 34
A cowboy named Bud was overseeing his herd in a remote mountainous pasture in Montana when suddenly a brand-new 2015 BMW advanced toward him out of a cloud of dust. The driver, a young man named Cliff in a Brioni® suit, Gucci® shoes, RayBan® sunglasses and YSL® tie, leaned out the window and asked the cowboy, “If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, will you give me a calf?” Bud looks at the man, who obviously is a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answers, “Sure, why not?” The yuppie parks his car, whips out his Dell® notebook computer, connects it to his Apple iPhone, and surfs to a NASA page on the Internet, where he calls up a GPS satellite to get an exact fix on his location which he then feeds to another NASA satellite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo. The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop® and exports it to an image processing facility in Hamburg, Germany. Within seconds, he receives an email on his Apple iPad® that the image has been processed and the data stored. He then accesses an MS-SQL® database through an ODBC connected Excel® spreadsheet with email on his Galaxy S5® and, after a few minutes, receives a response. Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hi-tech, miniaturized HP LaserJet® printer, turns to the cowboy and says, “You have exactly 1,586 cows and calves.” “That’s right. Well, I guess you can take one of my calves,” says Bud. He watches the young man select one of the animals and looks on with amusement as the young man stuffs it into the trunk of his car. Then Bud says to the young man, “Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my calf?” The young man thinks about it for a second and then says, “Okay, why not?” “You’re a United States Congressman”, says Bud. “Wow! That’s correct,” says the yuppie, “but how did you guess that?” “No guessing required.” answered the cowboy. “You showed up here even though nobody called you; you want to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked. You used millions of dollars worth of equipment trying to show me how much smarter than me you are; and you don’t know jack-chit about how working people make a living or about cows, for that matter. This is a herd of sheep. Now give me back my dang dog, ya’ fool.”
