FROM THE PUBLISHER Spring is upon us! Although it’s still snowing in the final days of March as I write this. And of course, Spring brings the prospect of being able to ride more regularly and hopefully being able to feel your fingers when you’re done! (Speaking of which, check out our article this month on Gloves & Heated Grips- Pg. 44) The last few weeks have been a hectic one as we prepare for the 2019 riding season here in Ohio and the countless runs, rides, bike nights, bike shows, rallies and other motorcycle events that we are hosting or supporting here in the magazine. Everyone is planning out their year and we make effort to be as many places as possible as we cover the local riding community – across the state! As you go through this month’s magazine, I’d really urge you to consider expanding your “riding envelope” and try some new things in 2019. That might be a new bike show or rally – or maybe showing your bike for the first time at a show. You might consider checking out a flat track race and witness firsthand the excitement of bikes sliding around the gravel strewn turns. (Our friends out at the Ohio Flat Track Center / Triangle Motorcycle Club have a FULL schedule of events on page 45.) You might also consider riding with some new folks as well. If you aren’t involved in a riding organization – a club, an association like HOG or ABATE, or maybe helping with a local charitable event – you’re missing out on a great opportunity to connect with fellow riders and others that might just have a similar outlook on life. As cool as our bikes are – they are a lot more fun when you’re riding with others. Even if you’re already involved in something, I’d really encourage you to expand your horizons and try something new in 2019. For years I rode the same bike – never even sat on another. My Softail Heritage FLSTN was an extension of me and we prowled the roads all over Ohio and the East Coast. Then I made the “motorcycle community” my life and started working with the magazine. I got out more and more and discovered so many new aspects of the 2 wheeled life, and contrary to what many may think – you can have more than one bike in your life! Instead of just being a “cruiser guy” – I ride cross country on a sport touring bike, take an old KLR 650 through the trails, and I hit the vintage bike nights on a 69’ CB650 Café. And on each of these rides I’ve met some amazing folks – kindred spirits with a passion for riding, although not always the same style as I’ve been used to. And that’s kinda cool! It’s made me a better all-around rider and probably person as well. Even my Heritage has taken on a new persona – now reborn as an open belt, custom “bobber”?

The Motorcycle Industry is Struggling? (And in turn the Motorcycle Community is suffering) For some that seems like an obvious statement, as dealerships struggle to sell new bikes and bemoan the arrivals of millennials that would seem to have not bought into the buying trends of their parents in years past. Harley is shuttering a factory and laying off employees, while local dealerships apparently “struggle” to stay open. But then along comes a report from the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) in January that includes some astounding statistics. More households have motorcycles than ever before! (An increase of more than 1.5 million homes since 2014.) Motorcycle ownership is at a record high! (An increase of more than 2 million since 2014, full 1 million more people than the previous record in 2009.) Percentage of women motorcycle owners is almost DOUBLE what it was ten years ago! (19% in 2018 vs. 10% in 2009 – according to the MIC) But how can these statistics be true, when new motorcycle sales are roughly half what they were ten years ago? (472k in 2017 vs 1 million in 2007, Motorcycle Industry Council) The answer might lie in the very same report – “Modern motorcycles are high-quality machines, enabling the pre-owned market to be a key part of the overall growth in the motorcycle and rider population,” said Jim Woodruff, secretary/treasurer of the MIC Board of Directors and COO of National Powersport Auctions. “The annual pre-owned market is actually three times larger than the new market. Used bikes appeal to many riders because there are so many options in terms of price and style.” (Motorcycle Industry Council 1/23/2019, www.MIC.org) So “high quality machines” is a euphemism for EXPENSIVE in this context, and basically the MIC would appear to be saying that the industry has priced themselves out of the market. It only takes visiting a few motorcycle events to validate this. The “hottest” motorcycle events in town? The retro-custom, home build shows – hands down. Garage Brewed, Fuel, and our own TRO Bike Show Series are packing them in and growing exponentially – while the industry / dealer shows get smaller and smaller every year. Then to compound things, many of the factory dealerships have pulled back from supporting many of the grass roots motorcycle events in their own community in favor of “social media marketing” and bicycle stunt shows or chili cook-offs at the dealerships. The end result is the factory dealerships 8

focusing on their own existing (and potentially dwindling) customer base and turning their backs on the opportunity to connect with the very NEW riders that they so desperately need. We proudly publish the largest regional motorcycle magazine in the country and have a print and digital readership base of more than 250,000. How did we accomplish this? We went out and embraced the motorcycle community. If you attend bike shows, bike nights, rallies, or rides in Ohio – chances are that you’ve seen our trailers or tents set up. And we don’t simply show up for a beer and to take some pictures – we help promote and sometimes even host the events. And why do we do this? Because we know that it’s the grassroots events – the rides, bike nights, bike shows, and various charity events – that inspire riders and breathe life into the riding community. The answer isn’t 50 new models in 2 years – or cranking out $1215k factory versions of the $2k garage builds that really get all the attention at the shows these days. It’s to RE-CONNECT with the RIDERS and embrace the motorcycle community – like the dealerships did 10, 20 years ago. The factories are making some AMAZING bikes, so that’s not the issue. The issue is that they are locked away at the dealerships and NOT at the local events that everyone is participating in. The dealerships need to get out and participate in the local events. That’s the answer – not more google ads. Please note that NOT ALL dealerships are suffering from this shortterm, myopic outlook. There are a number of dealerships that STILL actively support the local riding community – and those are the dealerships that we all need to support as well! As always, we greatly appreciate your support as we look to serve the riding community. Thank you!

Most notably, Ohio Bike Week will once again kick off the scheduled concerts in Toledo with Queensryche at Toledo H-D on Friday, May 24th. “There were a lot of reasons that we had to cut things back last year – but with the support of Lake Erie Islands and Shores, Mad River H-D, Budweiser, and our presenting sponsor Progressive, we are able to once again bring a full 10 days of Riding and Rockin’!” stated Brad Stofcheck with Ohio Bike Week. Ohio Bike Week will be kicking things off Memorial Weekend with several nationally recognized performers at Toledo H-D and Mad River Harley-Davidson. These are great “low-dough” concerts with General Admission just $15 – and the up-front VIP Tickets just $40. Then the next weekend, the focus shifts to downtown Sandusky and the World Famous BLOCK PARTY. There the concerts are all FREE to attend, but those wanting to get up front can also get VIP tickets.

Motorcycle Ohio hosts Workshop for 300 Instructors! Recognizes Thunder Roads Ohio and Ridin’ On for supporting their programs. Motorcycle Ohio is the state program charged with coordinating the various motorcycle training programs offered across the state, rider safety programs, and generally promoting motorcycle awareness throughout Ohio. It’s a great organization that offers Basic Rider Safety Courses for just $50. That’s right – it’s just $50 and that includes the use of their motorcycles. Additionally, once you pass the course – you get a certificate that you can present in lieu of taking the motorcycle riding exam at the licensing station. How cool is that?!

Thunder Roads Ohio makes Coloring Book and Bike Show Donations Thanks to the support of our readers and a number of business partners, Thunder Roads Ohio was able to make donations to several local charities and charitable events with funds raised by the TRO Coloring Books and the TRO Championship Bike Show Events. Over 500 of the TRO Coloring Books were sold in 2018 – with 100% of the $2 requested donation for each being donated to Christian Children’s Home of Ohio in Wooster and Special Olympics. Additional donations of cash and services were provided to over 40 other local charitable organizations as part of our Warrior Fund Campaign – supporting those fighting to make a difference in our local communities. The TRO Championship Bike Shows are the primary source of donations for these efforts.

Hi Friends,

This is the first month that we should be able to ride and not feel like we are in great north country. Since this is the first of the riding season, we all need to keep 100% of our minds on what we are doing. Many of you have heard me say that the first chance you get you need to get some parking lot practice in. Just to tune things up a little, start with some figure eights, starting large and working your way down to small. Next try a slow ride and then pull off some good hard stops. Remember not to go too fast and use both front and rear brakes. The first time out on the road, remember to look ahead and scan left and right, close to you and far down the road. If you start out practicing good habits, they will become second nature and you may just see that crash before you get there. Always ride defensively. You are out there to have a good time and it’s not any fun to get in a crash. May is Motorcycle Awareness Month and on Saturday May 4th, ABATE of Ohio, Inc. will be hosting an Awareness Ride from AD Farrow’s in Sunbury to the Ohio State House to show everyone that we are back on the roads in Ohio. For 30 years we have been doing this Awareness Ride the first weekend of May. Let’s make this year a big one. The gates will open at 9am at AD Farrow Harley Davidson, 7754 St. Route 36/37 E., Sunbury Ohio at the I-71, Exit 131. As at any good run, there will be coffee and donuts (thanks to AD Farrow) and a few things to do before we leave. The escorted parade will leave at noon sharp for the Ohio State House. At the State House we will read Proclamations and hear a few short speeches about Motorcycle Awareness. Then down the street about 6 blocks to Victory’s, 543 S. High St, for a little brotherhood, food and beverages.

What would make this year one of the greatest would be to have not just one large group of bikes come into AD Farrow but many groups. Let’s get some more of the M/ Cs, R/Cs and organizations to come to Columbus and show everyone that it is Motorcycle Awareness Month, we are riding, and we will keep riding. If you have not taken a riding course, please do. It will make you a better rider because you’re never too old to learn something. And if you don’t have a Look Twice – Save a Life sign in your yard, get one. Also, every car could use a Look Out for Motorcycles magnet on their bumper. Thanks for your support! We are so close…

In just a few days we will be pulling out the bikes, if we haven’t already, and hitting the road to freedom once again! I’ve seen a few brave souls out there in the chilly air and each time I do, I say a prayer for them, as I do for you as the season approaches. The point is, we have the confidence that as we get closer to the riding season, we will get our boots and jackets, get out our bikes and hit the road running! Confidence. The feeling or belief that one can rely on someone or something; firm trust. Wouldn’t it be cool if we could have the same confidence in other things or people? If you ride at all, you know that there are times when the machine you’re riding doesn’t respond to you the way you want it to. The battery might be dead, the gas low, the tires worn down to the no thread, just about dead level. Regardless of the issue, the bike won’t go, and you are disappointed or absolutely crushed because it’s a perfect day for a ride! Now you have lost a bit of confidence in the machine, a bit of peace in yourself and the day you were looking forward to spending going for a ride has turned into working on your ride…bummer. It just goes to show you that you can’t rely on machines to bring you total happiness. Now, I am the type of person that names everything. My bike is Rosie, my car is Coco and my husband is, well, Rex, and other sweet names, but you get the picture. Anything that is endearing to me gets a special name. That name connects me to the person or thing and gives me a sense of confidence in them. An assurance that they are mine and I am theirs. I know, it’s weird, but give me a second and I will bring it around to you again. The level of confidence that I have in Rosie or Coco isn’t the same as the confidence I have in Rex. It’s machine versus man. The same confidence I have in Rex, isn’t the same confidence I have in Jesus. That is man versus God. I trust Rex however, I trust God more because He isn’t going to fail me. The machines most likely will at some point, Rex might, even though he doesn’t set out to, but God will never fail me. Sometimes, our circumstances look like God isn’t even around, like when the bike doesn’t start or when you are on a trip with friends and someone says, “hey, your tire doesn’t look right” and you need to find a shop right then to get a new one. Another example would be when on a long trip, the motor dies out and you look back and see that there was a bad accident on the route you would have been on had your battery not been dead….it’s then that you realize that God was with you all along and the confident faith you had in Him just got stronger. Do you have that confidence in someone you cannot see or feel? Can you confidently say on your next ride that you are assured of your arrival to the destination because you are confident in the journey? Only nerds are Christians, right? “It’s not cool to be a Christian.” That’s what I was told twenty years ago while I was in high school and that’s how countless others are made to feel today. And you know what… it’s true. From the moment a person acknowledges that they have placed their faith in Jesus Christ they have become an enemy of the world and are therefore uncool. They are marked as different, odd, outcasts and freaks. Why? Because we live in a world which glorifies evil and demonizes righteousness. Personally I don’t think it’s cool to betray your marriage vows because you’re in a different area code. I don’t think it’s cool to get high on drugs. I don’t think it’s cool to lie, cheat or steal. I don’t think it’s cool to murder cops because you feel slighted in some way. I don’t think it’s cool to kill someone because you don’t agree with their religious or political beliefs. If those beliefs make me an uncool nerd, then I’m comfortable with that. See, being a Christian means you must live for a life after death, not just this present world we physically inhabit. Being a Christian is a lot like belonging to a counter culture, as in you don’t go with the flow. Jesus was a rebel and He bucked the system and He was crucified because of it. 2000 years ago, the disciples were persecuted because of it as well… as a matter of fact, Jesus warned all followers of this when He said “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.” (John 15:18-19) I am unashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ for I know that it is the power of God and He brings salvation to all those who believe. (Romans 1:16) When I became a Christian I obligated myself to share this message and live in a certain manner. I haven’t always been perfect, but His grace is sufficient in my moments of weakness, and as long as I remain strong in my faith… I’m covered by that grace. Ohio’s “Families 4 Vets” campaign has launched! Families4Vets is a veteran’s suicide prevention initiative of Ohio’s Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) and Department of Veterans Affairs. The goal is to empower family members and close friends to “step up” for active-duty military personnel, returning veterans, Ohio National Guard members and other servicemen and women. We know that military families often struggle with issues related to deployments, service and the transition back to civilian life, such as re-integration challenges, PTSD, depression or withdrawal. Close friends, parents/caregivers, grandparents, siblings, adult children or other relatives of veterans facing the challenges of re-integration after military service, have an important role to play. And we’re here to help! Those who love and care about our service members and veterans can access the campaign Website and social media pages for know-how, answers, resources and support. They can also get linked up to local, state and federal resources, including crisis response, both for themselves and for the veterans in their lives. This campaign builds knowledge and skills, and connects people so that we can all help weave a strong “circle of care” around military personnel and their families. Hello wind brothers and sisters! After a few months off, I’m gearing up along with our TRO readers for an amazing riding season! The clock has sprung forward and the sunlight wants to fall upon our shoulders on the open roads. In addition to my love of riding, I have certainly enjoyed expanding my wardrobe when it comes to riding apparel. I admit, I enjoy shopping, but when I first started riding in 2017, I didn’t have a stitch of riding apparel. Most of what I wore was geared toward my tour business, so it wasn’t suitable to wear for riding. When I found “the style” that suited my interests, it didn’t take long to acquire “the look.” The feel and smell of leather vests, chaps, jackets and gloves soon took on an appeal. The next step was to add my personal expressions on my vest in the form of patches. What fun! The 2019 calendar is filling up with exciting ride destinations both near and far. As I traveled from coast to coast last year, all I could imagine was returning again soon to some awesome locations and spending more time exploring our beautiful country. Recently, I visited a couple of our own local businesses in Medina and Wayne County that have a lot to offer the biker enthusiast.

TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES Over the last several years, Thunder Roads Ohio has worked to develop local and regional Bike Shows as a means of showcasing both the rides that our readers have and the amazing works of rolling art that local shops and builders have been producing. Along the way, we discovered that many local riders had never participated in a Bike Show – never considering that their bikes were “show worthy”. It turns out, though, that most riders have an appreciation – even a love of motorcycles that goes beyond the amount of chrome on a bike or if there are water spots and dust on them. We’ve hosted Bike Shows at indoor venues showcasing bikes with less than a dozen miles on them – and we’ve hosted Bike Shows at outdoor venues ranging from dealership parking lots to grass fields with countless entries still hot from riding in from across the state! Throughout we’ve discovered that it’s not always the most polished that gets the attention, but it’s the love and work that goes into the bike that everyone appreciates. Even if you’ve never participated in a Bike Show before, we encourage everyone to participate and have fun with the shows! Chances are that you’ll discover a greater appreciation for what makes your bike unique and meet some other folks with a similar passion. And we’re certain you’ll have a blast!

The TRO Bike Show Series features local, regional, and nationally recognized shows that all builders and bike owners are welcome to participate in. Vintage, metric, v-twin, customs, restored antiques, *resto-mods*, trikes, and radicals * they are all welcome to the show. These shows are RIDE-IN shows, meaning that the bikes are expected to be ridden and a little bit of road dust is fine. We don’t split hairs over trailering in bikes, but we do require that all bikes must be functioning. They must start and be able to be safely ridden on the road. Most of the shows include voting by event attendees and weighted judges scores. We use this approach to make certain we include both the “popular opinion” and an objective review of the bikes.

One of the really exciting aspects of our ride program is that the Buckeye Thunder Run can evolve with new stops, special prizes, and other updates throughout the year! We will be adding and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, we’ll investigate them, and if we agree that it’s a suitable stop – they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops may only run a few months – and possibly not consecutive. A cool winery in Geneva might be a stop early in the season, and then we bring them back during the harvest season! We can also modify the run if it turns out that something just isn’t working. We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again, this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. The Thunder Roads team has spent a lot of time collecting nominations and researching stops for the Run; but there are undoubtedly plenty more stops out there. Riding with Ian – Preparing for Cuba! by: Ian Abrams,TRO Contributor In a few days I’m traveling to Cuba for a guided, 12-day motorcycle trip, on a BMW F700GS. Normally I travel on my own – but being Cuba, I opted for a guided ride to help with the language and local custom / requirements. I’ve never been to Cuba before, but I’ve heard a lot of amazing stories. I have to admit that I’m totally stoked for this trip. I thought that I’d lead off with a little on what I’m taking with me. I always like to be self-contained – even if I’m traveling with a group and escorts such as on this trip. From what I understand, the F700GS’s that we are taking will have panniers which allow a fair bit of storage. Still, it’s a 12-day trip which means that space will be a serious consideration. So, here’s what I’ve decided to take – in no particular order: -While off the bike, and walking, a sun hat is mandatory for my bald head along with sun glasses…one pair has bifocals to read maps… -ORTLIEB makes a TOTALLY waterproof

tex is so great and squishes to nothing (Cabala’s rain pants are perfect--big side boot zippers) - Micro fabric underwear, bathing/walking shorts and hiking socks to keep my feet dry. Smart phone VS Dedicated GPS for Navigation Smart phone limitations 1. The touch screen is not designed to work with leather gloves. You either have to wear special gloves or treat fingertips with Nanotips solution every few weeks. 2. Phone apps often have tiny text, icons and buttons that are difficult to impossible to operate with gloves on. This distracts from riding.

People ask me all the time: “Why bother with a dedicated GPS on my bike when I’ve already got a good smart phone? It has a GPS app built in that works just fine.” For years I have used a dedicated GPS for running my route files. It’s located on the left handlebar just above the clutch perch. A RAM X-mount on the right handlebar holds my smart phone, running the Waze GPS app that does basic routing and displays traffic info, location of police etc. I’ve been running the phone and GPS side by side for over 70K miles. Smart phones and apps have improved in the past few years. Are they ready to replace a dedicated GPS?

3. Since having the display on full brightness and on all the time will drain the phone battery in an hour or two, you need power from the bike to run it. That’s no problem unless it rains. Then the power connector gets wet and triggers a charging error message that blocks the S5 display. It takes 4-8 hours to dry out in the hotel room before the message clears and it will charge again. 4. The touch screen display is not designed to work in the rain. Water droplets striking it are like random button presses and it becomes uncontrollable. Checking route instructions and weather radar is important during a rainstorm, but that’s exactly when you can’t access it on your phone. 5. There are vinyl waterproof pouches with a clear plastic window to mount the phone on your bike. The extra layer of plastic over the display makes it harder to use with gloves and more difficult to see detail on a sunny day.

Smart phone advantages My Samsung S5 phone has a brighter display and is more water resistant than most, so physically it is one of the better phones to use on the bike. Searching for addresses, gas, hotels, places to eat is easier and much better on the phone because you use the interface all the time and the information is more up to date. Street level maps normally require a cell phone data signal to be available, but you can get around that by downloading Google maps for the region where you are riding. The only downside is that they expire after 30 days and have to be downloaded again to stay current. An alternative is Open Street Maps (OSM) which are compiled by volunteers and are generally free. The OSM maps for Europe are excellent but the USA maps are not as good as Google or Garmin.

6. Phone apps are less stable than a dedicated GPS. Waze crashes or freezes several times per day, often when passing the same location. Not reliable enough to be the sole GPS on my bike. Dedicated motorcycle GPS advantages 1. My GPS is MUCH more reliable than a phone. Crashes only happen about once in a 20K mile year. 2. Completely waterproof. 3. Rugged touch screen technology designed to work with gloves and not bothered by rain. 4. Glove-friendly icons, buttons etc. Text is larger, easily readable 20” away from the handlebar.

Most phone GPS apps only support auto routing- you put in your destination and the GPS figures out the shortest or fastest route from your current location. If you want to use complex routes with multiple waypoints to force the route to use specific roads, you are out of luck unless you use a specialty app. Scenic is my recommendation for a fully capable app available for both iPhone and Android. The basic version is free but there are in-app purchases you will probably want to make. A one-year unlimited subscription is about $11.

2. Live traffic, including delays ahead, estimated time delays, alternate routes, even live traffic cameras

About GPS Routes Routes consist of waypoints and via points. The simplest routes have only one waypoint- the destination. When you load the destination, the GPS figures out the details of the route from your current location to the destination using information in the unit’s map database. (Auto routing) You can choose fastest route, shortest distance or curvy roads (on some units). Most GPS units are limited to this kind of “here to destination” routing and if that’s all you need, nearly any phone or dedicated GPS will do. Sport touring riders are usually interested in riding specific roads, so they need routes with additional via points between the start and finish waypoints to force the route to take specific roads. Complex routes can have 20-30 via points. Scenic for phones and all the Garmin zumo motorcycle GPS units support complex routes. When running a route, the GPS will inform you of distance to the next turn, direction of the turn, name of the upcoming road, etc. This information comes from the map database. Scenic and the zumos support voice prompts to notify you whenever a turn or feature is coming up. I find this to be essential, as I get involved with the back roads I am riding. The sound of the voice reminds you to look at the display when it’s important to pay attention. Important tips 1. If you want to follow a complex route accurately, you need to turn recalculation OFF in the device settings. Otherwise, missing a turn will cause the GPS to automatically recalculate the route mid-course and that usually messes it up.

3. Live weather along your route including radar on the GPS route map 4. Search for locations etc, just like Waze and other apps on your phone and send to the zumo.

2. Since routes depend on the map database of the individual GPS, they don’t calculate the same on all units. If you want to be sure you are following the route master’s intended path, you should consider using tracks, which are like a breadcrumb trail of geographic location points. Track files usually contain several thousand points and can be displayed as a colored line on the GPS display that’s independent of the map database.

Disadvantages: 1. The search function on the zumo is inferior to the phone for specific addresses and named places. 2. Maps are slightly less up-to-date than the phone 3. It’s a dedicated device that costs $350-700. Best practiceHave both phone and dedicated motorcycle GPS on your bike, powered and easily accessible. 1. You have a backup in case one device fails. 2. If you want to go off-route for gas, food, etc, you can program that on the other device without disturbing a complex route. 3. I like to run the main GPS in North up mode to clarify what direction I’m going and where I am relative to other things. 4. I run the other GPS in track up mode to make it easier to orient at turns.

“Should I buy heated grips or heated gloves?”

I got a text from a buddy the other day, “Should I buy heated grips or heated gloves?” I thought about it for a moment and replied, “Well… it depends…” While not quite as hotly debated as the best oil or tires for your bike, there are certainly folks with strong opinions on this matter; I’m certainly not innocent. Since Old Man Winter has felt it necessary to hang around so long this year, I figured it was worth diving into the details on how to keep your paws warm when the mercury dips below 50°F. Every motorcycle I’ve owned has had heated grips installed. I also own a pair of heated gloves, so I feel comfortable making an argument for purchasing either one, or both for that matter. Like so many things in motorcycling, it’s really about what machine you’re riding, and how you like to ride it

Heated Grips

The fever of “ride all the time” started to set in not long after bringing home

Installation means removing the factory grips, pushing on the new set, mounting the “controller”, managing some wire routing, and connecting to either the battery or a factory accessory plug. There is a myriad of options available, including non-permanent models that actually go over your factory grips (so you can remove them during the summer); prices range from as cheap as $50, to upwards of $300 for OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) grips. I’ve spent just under $100 each for the last two sets I’ve bought, and in the end, they’re comparable in price to premium winter riding gloves.

Heated Gloves my Triumph Speedmaster. I too, asked around to my riding friends what I should buy to keep my hands from freezing, no different than what was recently asked of me. For Christmas that year, my brotherin-law gifted me a set of aftermarket heated grips. I was riding about half an hour to work at the time, needless to say, it was a pretty life-changing experience. Those heated grips retailed for about fifty bucks and having now installed heated grips on three different bikes, I feel safe saying, the install is mostly painless (wiring under the tank can be a pain sometimes), and that the “bang for buck” factor is pretty high. For those that don’t know, most heated grips replace your factory grips, and include small heating elements that run off the battery. 44

A set of heated grips made the morning commute more comfortable, until the

point where the temperature started hovering at or below freezing. At that point, the backs of my hands were still really cold, and after almost half an hour in the air, the tips of my fingers were getting numb. I bit the bullet and spent $200 on a set of name brand heated gloves. Again, for folks that don’t know,

heated gloves are not all that different than heated grips; the gloves, however, have heating elements on the backside of the hands and fingers. You run the connecting cables through your jacket to a controller that you can put in your pocket and again plug into the battery or accessory terminal. The price of entry was pretty high, but after rolling into work on twenty-something-degree mornings with grips and gloves running, my hands were again warm and toasty.

How do you choose?

Each system has its advantages, and while I adopted heated gear in a progressive fashion, there’s logic to purchasing gloves before or in lieu of grips. Having bought three sets, it’s obvious I have a bit of a preference toward heated grips. I personally find that heated grips offer more flexibility than heated gloves, and the cost of entry is usually lower. Installation, however, may be a bit intimidating for the less kinesthetically inclined among us. However, if you’re comfortable managing the wire routing and so on, the grips are now on the bike all year long and you don’t have to fuss with wires and plugs every time you get on the bike. What I find I like most about heated grips is when that first cold evening hits every fall, I can keep wearing my summer gloves, and just bump the grips up to level 2 and enjoy the ride without needing to stop and put on thicker gloves. On the flip side, if you have multiple bikes, having heated gloves means that you don’t need to install multiple sets of grips, and you can put the same gear on every morning and take whichever bike strikes your fancy. You can also make an argument that your hands are “warmer” since the heated gear forms a barrier between the cold air blast and your skin; most importantly, it’s the side of the glove that’s actually in contact with the wind, unlike grips. I have a set of traditional heated gloves that “plug in” so that I have unlimited energy to keep the gloves warm, however in recent years battery operated heated gloves have become a thing. My argument about fussing with cables and so on is a moot point when you can just grab your gloves and go; these new gloves are invaluable for the daily commuter. That said, if you forget to charge those gloves, or decide to go on an all-day adventure, that convenience can rapidly become a liability depending on the weather.

The Trifecta

A little over a year ago I was in the hunt for riding the motorcycle every day for a full year. As fall settled in and I was staring down the impending winter months, I was again searching for a way to keep my hands warm. Grips and

gloves were obviously great, but when things dipped into the teens, they were still not enough to keep warm for any extended rides. I had buddies tell me I needed a set of “Hippo Hands”. I had fabricated and purchased “brush guards” for both of my bikes in the past, but those only bought me about an extra two degrees of comfort. If I was going to make a successful run on winter riding in January, I knew it was time to open my wallet and make an investment. I admit, I really wanted a set of brand name “Hippo Hands”, but I wasn’t in a position to pull the trigger on a set at the time, fortunately there were other, more affordable, hand mitt suppliers out there (while not as extensive as gloves, hand mitts can also be found in varying degrees of price, features, and quality). With a giant set of over-the-handlebar “mittens”, I charged into winter last year, again, asking myself why I didn’t try them

sooner. In late December I was logging my daily mileage with my heated grips on, yet wearing summer gloves and still warm and toasty despite below-freezing temperatures. Those mitts made riding in single-digits possible in January but were a real life saver later in March when I left Dayton bound March Moto Madness in Tellico Plains, Tennessee. Two hours in, I had been riding well below freezing with my heated grips, vest, and gloves all on full blast when I stopped in Kentucky for gas. If not for those hand mitts, it would have taken all day to get to Tellico Plains, if at all. Debating heated grips versus heated gloves is like arguing about using a GPS, cell phone, or paper map to navigate; it’s simply a matter a taste and function. I can’t say it enough, once you’ve dropped the money on either (or all three) of these options, you’ll immediately ask yourself why you didn’t spend the money sooner. I find I’m often among the thriftiest in my riding circle, but when the difference between riding in comfort, or not riding at all is about $100, I’m going to spend the money, and squeeze a few extra days into the riding season. All the extra “clutter” isn’t for everyone, but for those interested, you might be surprised by the difference it makes.

A little maintenance today will help ensure that your bike is ready to go.

The snow is melting, the temperature is starting to rise and you are itching to get back on two wheels. It’s been a long winter for you and your motorcycle. Before you jump on your bike on the first nice day, take some time now to get your machine ready for all those rides you have planned. A little maintenance today will help ensure that your bike is ready to go.

1. Drain and Replace Fuel

If your bike sat all winter, the gas in the tank is most likely stale and will need to be drained and replaced with fresh gas. The easiest way to do this is to use a siphon pump and pump it out into a container to dispose of safely. If you don’t have a siphon, you can follow the fuel line from the bottom of the tank down to the carb and disconnect it at the filter to let the fuel drain out. A lot of folks think they can top off the tank with some Premium or add a fuel treatment and then just run it through with some riding. That may have worked years ago, but these days with fuel injectors, digital fuel / ignition management, and of course ethanol – you don’t want that junk going through your systems! It’s a lot easier to get the gunk out while it’s in the tank than later when its been run through your bike.

The fuel is set and the battery is ready to go; now let’s get into a little engine work. Even if you had your bike serviced toward the end of the season last year, it’s not a bad idea to replace the oil and filter to start off the season on the right foot. It takes about 15 minutes to perform an oil change, and that can make a world of difference in your bike’s lifespan. This is something that you need to make part of your maintenance routine in order to avoid bigger problems, and it’s a lot easier to simply do it in the Spring then wait til you have the sudden inspiration to do it later.

There are just a couple more things to do before you’re ready to ride. A quick inspection of your tires is always a great idea. Look for balding tires that have cords showing or any sort of sidewall bubbles or other damage that could cause a serious safety issue. If you notice any of these signs, get your tires replaced right away. A new set is always a great way to ensure your bike is safe and ready for trips around town or across the state for the rest of the season.

4. Belt or Chain

A broken belt or chain can strand you at the side of the road. Take a few minutes to inspect them for wear and weak spots; replace the belt or chain if you find any damage. It doesn’t hurt to check the tension, either, and make sure it’s up to the manufacturer’s specs.

5. Spark Plugs

Prevent problems down the road by checking your motorcycle’s spark plugs. If any are dirty or show signs of damage, replace them before you are left stranded on the side of the road. If you’ve neglected them for a while, you might also be amazed by how much better your bike runs with clean plugs!

With fresh fuel in the tank, the next thing you’ll want to tackle is the battery. While some people put their battery on a trickle charge over the winter to keep it charged, many forget – and come springtime, they find that they have a dead battery. If you have one, you can charge it back up. If it’s more than a couple seasons old, however, it may be a better idea to replace it with a new battery. Again, with all the new power demands of new bikes and accessories – batteries don’t last like they used to.

Even if they are in good condition, make sure you check the air pressure. After sitting in storage all winter, your tires may have lost air. Using an air pressure gauge, check the air pressure to ensure that both tires at the correct level. You can check your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s recommended setting.

7. Check Other Fluids

The last thing you should check is the other fluids that make your bike go. Things like brake fluid and coolant can leak during the offseason, and levels could be low. Sometimes it’s as simple as topping them off, but if not, a fresh fill is always a great thing to do before you hit the road. Spring can be an exciting time for motorcycle owners. Getting out there on your bike and feeling the wind in your face lets you know that winter is gone for good and it’s time to have fun again. Before you head out, complete this small checklist to make sure you and your bike are safe and sound for the rest of the season.

To Eat Their Own

Yes, I meant EAT. Have you noticed how some clubs are constantly punishing or throwing their club brothers out the door? Isn’t that crazy? I mean here we are in a volunteer organization, that’s supposed to be fun, and yet the ego of some people in MCs is just astounding. Especially since in their general life, they probably don’t command a canoe up a creek. Yet they get into these volunteer organizations and power trip.

I’ve recently been a witness to a couple of clubs who threw out leaders for nothing more than rumor and speculation. One club in particular has a steady habit of eating their own. When I see new patches join that organization, I often wonder if they are blind to it, just don’t know about it, or think they can make a difference and somehow change it. I’ve seen this club do the same thing over and over for decades, they ain’t gonna change. I’ve witnessed a leader in a club fall ill, and the political clamber to step on his neck to climb above him was absurd and it was before he was even out on medical! That was one of my first experiences I saw after joining the club life, and it was probably my first indicator in multiple other nations. I am that they feel they are in control, that this life ain’t always what it aware of an “alleged” situation so they punk their own brothers. appears from the outside looking where a guy in a club was beaten in. BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT It’s Never Been Easier for Women to Start Shooting Now is an ideal time for women to become gun owners. The firearms industry has changed in recent years due to greater numbers of women realizing that the market has adapted to suit their needs. Ladies who wish to master the art of shooting should be aware of the unique advantages now available to them. 1.It’s now easy to find shooting lessons geared towards women. Unlike in former years, it’s simple to find shooting and gun-safety lessons for women almost anywhere. Despite geographical differences and variations in teaching styles, all courses teach women to harness their unique physique and femininity as strengths when using a weapon. For women who prefer the insights of female instructors, there are plenty of female teachers available. Women unfamiliar with guns don’t have to worry about facing sneers or getting grunted at by swaggering male experts—although, to be fair, there are many knowledgeable, gun-wielding gentlemen who are keen to teach beginners and treat women with respect. 2.The firearm industry has adapted to make guns more accessible to women.Glock, Walther, Sturm Ruger, and Colt have adopted new product designs to suit the growing female market. The weapons of choice for today’s women are no longer small or “lightweight” versions of heavier guns, narrow to grip and full of recoil. Many women prefer 9-mm calibers; Colt, known for its .45-caliber handguns, now offers a wider variety of 9 mm choices perfectly suitable for women customers. There is also a wealth of information available to women to assist them in choosing their perfect weapon. The Well-Armed Woman, founded in 2012, has 400 chapters across the United States along with a user-friendly website devoted to training women to take charge of finding the right products and information about shooting, gun safety and firearms. 3.Shopping for the right firearm couldn’t be simpler for ladies of today—there are now specialized stores tailored for women to pick and choose the right weapons. Gone are the times when women interested in guns were compelled to walk into musty, armory-like sporting goods stores or dingy dealer shops as bewildered or patronizing male gun pros looked on. Nowadays, women can buy guns from specialized boutiques. For women who like weapons and shooting, shopping has never been more fun. 4.Specialized shooting gear now exists that is tailored just for women. Forget about grappling with clunky holsters or trying to strap on a heavy, ugly-looking belt—if you’re a gun-toting girl, why not carry your concealed piece in a corset or a thigh holster? That might sound antiquated, but these products are far from frivolous—the innovative company Dene Adams, founded in 2013, has a wide selection of convenient concealed holsters well-suited to the modern gun-carrying woman. Yoga pants with a built-in waistband holster, compression shorts with a hidden thigh holster, 52 52

and comfortable bra holsters all offer ideal options for toting weapons for protection. Women of all ages and walks of life who enjoy shooting and promoting responsible

gun ownership meet in groups all across the nation to share their knowledge and socialize. According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, retailers estimate that women formed 23 percent of the retail firearms market in 2016—up seven points since 2010. The Crime Prevention Research Center reports that the number of concealed-carry permits increased nationally since 2017, with the biggest increases among women and minorities. According to Reuters, more and more gun and ammunition manufacturers are now sponsoring competitive women shooters. With a rise in the amount of specialty shops, female-oriented gear and support groups, women have become the fastest growing group of gun owners in the United States. 80 year-old deli owner evens the odds when two men try to rob him at gunpoint by Chad D. Baus WJW (Fox Cleveland) reported recently that an 80 year-old deli owner was forced to defend his own life when two masked men attempted to rob his store at gunpoint. From the article: Cleveland police are searching for two men who attempted to rob Clark Deli on W. 73rd Street Sunday morning. Mike Makkal, the owner of Clark Deli, told FOX 8 two men concealing their faces wearing hooded sweatshirts entered his deli around 10 a.m. “When he tried to force his way behind the counter to the cash register I saw a gun in his hand,” he said. Makkal said one of the would-be robbers tried to get him to open the cash register. That’s when the owner said he pulled out his gun and shot at the men. The suspects ran from the store. “I shot one shot then he got down and ran,” Makkal is quoted as saying, “Then the other robber went to the end of the store and asked me not to shoot him, but I put my gun in his face.” He told FOX 8 he was shaking and scared for his life when the two men tried to rob him, but even at 80-years-old he refused to back down. On June 7, 2014, Shannon Watts, the founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, went on CNN’s “New Day Saturday” to discuss persons exercising their right to open carry in Texas. Show host Victor Blackwell asked “Where [has] a bad guy with a gun ...

Not only has it happened - Fox 8 reports it has happened TWICE in Makkal’s store in TWO weeks! Makkal described what happened during the last harrowing armed robbery attempt. “I found a stainless steel gun to my head,” he said. Then, the gunman chased him around the store. “Until he found my gun in his face,” Makkal said. That gunman also ran from his store. Makkal says he has owned his deli for 40 years and isn’t going anywhere. Police are still looking for the suspects.

These incidents come less than a month after Cincinnati prosecutor Joe Deters announced he would not press charges against a store owner who shot and killed an armed robber in Cincinnati. Before he began his attack, the armed robber walked right past a sign on the counter featuring a large sign which says “WARNING - This is a victim free zone” (Photo by WXIX Fox 19) After he was shot by the store owner who made good on her word and refused to be a victim, the would-be robber stumbled back past the sign before collapsing and dying in the doorway. RECIPES

This is an OLD family recipe my kids and hubby LOVE. It looks fancy but it is really easy to make! AND it can be made with just about any fish!

Crab and Shrimp Stuffed Fish Serve 4 (or 2 hungry bikers) This is what a summer sun set tastes like to me lol

8 fish fillets, thawed (any white fish will do) ½ tsp paprika

Sunset Grilled Chicken Serve 5-6 (or 3 hungry bikers)

¼ tsp dill 3 tbsp melted butter 1 tsp Old Bay seasoning

1 large onion, diced 1 tbs garlic, minced 2 cups pineapple, diced 1 cup frozen orange juice 1 cup orange slices 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved 1/2 tsp cayenne powder 1/2 tsp black pepper 2 tsp soy sauce 4 chicken breasts, cut into long strips salt and pepper to taste

In a large pot lightly caramelize the onions, then add in the garlic and cook another few minutes, but dont let your garlic burn it will make everything bitter Add in the pineapple, frozen OJ, orange slices, cherry tomatoes, cayenne powder, black pepper and soy sauce, mix well and lower heat to a simmer Mean while, season chicken strips lightly with salt and pepper then grill them over high heat turning once to be sure you get great grill mark.

Stuffing 1 can salad shrimp 1 cup imitation crab, chopped (or 1 can lump crab meat) 1 cup seasoned breadcrumbs 1 clove garlic, minced ¼ celery, minced ¼ cup onion, minced 3 tbsp butter, melted ½ cup mayo 1 tbsp lemon juice 2 tbsp Pinch dill Salt and pepper to taste Mix together all filling ingredients, roughly divide into four parts In a foil lined cookie sheet, lay out 4 filets and lay one part of stuffing on each filet forming it to the shape of the filets, keeping it ¼ inch from the edge all the way around

Remove from heat and allow to cool enough to handle.

Place another filet on top of the stuffing, forming it to meet the bottom filet

Dice into large chunks and add to the simmering pineapple mix

Brush fish with melted butter, old bay and dill on top of fish.

Allow to simmer another 10 minutes then serve hot as is or over rice with a pinch of parsley for a garnish

Bake at 350 degrees for 12 minutes or until the fish flakes apart.

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND

A biker was riding along a California beach when suddenly the sky clouded above his head and in a booming voice the Lord said “Because you have TRIED to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish.” The biker pulled over and said, “Build a bridge to Hawaii so I can ride over anytime I want.” The Lord said, “Your request is materialistic. Think of the enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking. The supports required to reach the bottom of the Pacific! The concrete and steel it would take! It will nearly exhaust several natural resources. I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things. Take a little more time and think of something that would honor and glorify me.” The biker thought about it for some time. Finally he said, “Lord, I wish that I could understand my wife. I want to know how she feels inside, what she’s thinking when she gives me the silent treatment, why she cries, what she means when she says nothing is wrong, and how I can make a woman truly happy!” The Lord replied, “You want two lanes or four on that bridge?”

Old ranch owner John farmed a small ranch in Montana. The Montana Wage and Hour Department claimed he was not paying proper wages to his workers and sent an agent out to interview him. ‘I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them,’ demanded the agent. ‘Well,’ replied old John, ‘There’s my ranch hand who’s been with me for 3 years. I pay him $600 a week plus free room and board. The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $500 a week plus free room and board. Then there’s the half-wit who works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of all the work around here. He makes about $10 per week, pays his own room and board and I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night.’ ‘That’s the guy I want to talk to, the halfwit,’ says the agent. ‘That would be me,’ replied old rancher John. Our manager at the restaurant where I worked was a much beloved, jovial man. But there was one subject you didn’t dare discuss in front of him — his height. Or, should I say, his lack of it. One day, he stormed through the door and announced angrily, “Someone just picked my pocket!” Most of my fellow waitresses and I were speechless, except for the one who blurted out, “How could anyone stoop so low?”

My younger brother, I explained to a friend, had quite a temper as a boy. Our parents had tried extra love, attention and patience on him, with little success.
